  • Ghana ranks second in Africa for mobile money services growth – Report

Ghana has secured the second position in Africa for the growth of mobile money services, following Côte d’Ivoire, as revealed in the 2023 Oxford Economics Africa’s Report titled “The Africa Risk-Reward Index.”

This noteworthy achievement is highlighted in the report, despite the presence of the Electronic Transfer Levy.

The report further indicates that the value of mobile money transactions in Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal exceeds 100% of their respective Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“Specifically, mobile money services have made more inroads in Africa than in any other region, with West African countries – namely Senegal, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire – leading the way”.

“The uptake of mobile money services – indicative of the need (and desire) to leapfrog traditional financial infrastructure. The value of mobile money transactions in South Africa equates to under 1% of GDP, while the corresponding figures for Senegal and Ghana are well above 100% of GDP”, it added.

When it comes to mobile money accounts per 1,000 adults, Ghana secured the second position, with Côte d’Ivoire taking the lead.

In the category of mobile money agents per 1,000, Ghana achieved the second rank, while Senegal claimed the top spot.

The report highlighted an interesting observation regarding the relationship between a country’s financial sector maturity and the adoption of mobile money services. It suggests an inverse correlation, indicating a strong inclination to leapfrog traditional financial infrastructure in favor of mobile money solutions.

In the first eight months of 2023, total mobile money transactions in Ghana reached an impressive milestone of 1.190 trillion cedis. The Bank of Ghana reported that there were 21.6 million active mobile money accounts as of August this year, accompanied by 556,000 active agents.

The 2023 Oxford Economics Africa’s Report delved into the benefits and challenges associated with polarization in African countries, African-led security interventions, and the financing strategies employed by African nations to prepare for the future.

  • Arsenal’s Arteta praises Vieira after win at Oxford

Arsenal’s Arteta praises Vieira after win at Oxford

Following Arsenal’s 3-0 FA Cup victory over Oxford United, Mikel Arteta allayed fears regarding Bukayo Saka’s injury and predicted more incisive performances from Fabio Vieira.

On Monday, a victory at the Kassam Stadium led to a match at Manchester City for the fourth round, but Saka was taken off in the second half.

The image of Saka staggering off was concerning for the leaders as Arsenal will play fierce rivals Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.

But ahead of this weekend’s quick journey to face Spurs, Gunners manager Arteta said the England winger is “OK.”

After a lackluster first half, Arsenal overwhelmed League One team Oxford, with goals from Mohamed Elneny and Eddie Nketiah, who was in fine form, who added a swift double.

One of Arteta’s seven lineup adjustments saw Vieira start. He then assisted Nketiah in scoring the second goal by sending in a superb free kick that Elneny headed in to break the tie.

Due to injuries, the midfielder has had a difficult start to his Arsenal career, but Arteta is certain that he will turn out to be a wise acquisition.

Arteta told ITV Sport: “He has the quality. He is a really creative player, and he can decide games in the final third. He made a difference.”

Nketiah has scored four goals in as many games since the World Cup in the absence of the injured Gabriel Jesus, taking his tally for the season to seven.

Arteta said of the striker’s form: “It is what we want from every player. I am delighted. You have to be scoring goals, and he is doing it.”

He added: “We have only one [striker]. And to cope for that many months until Gabby’s back is not easy. We have to make the most out of the players we’ve got.”

  • Pennington on target as Shrewsbury hit back for a point against Oxford

Matt Pennington’s third goal of the season earned Shrewsbury a point as they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Oxford United.

Cameron Brannagan had put the visitors ahead in the first half with his sixth league goal of the campaign but Pennington’s header was enough to haul Steve Cotterill’s men into the top 10 in Sky Bet League One.

The full-blooded encounter also saw Oxford’s on-loan Swansea striker Kyle Joseph taken off on a stretcher in the first half.

Karl Robinson’s men were ahead on 15 minutes when Chey Dunkley rebuffed Brannagan’s first effort, but the midfielder’s second cannoned off a U’s defender and beyond goalkeeper Marko Marosi.

Simon Eastwood had to be at his best to deny Rob Street before the Oxford goalkeeper sprawled to his right to deny Luke Leahy what appeared to be a tap-in with 25 minutes left.

But from the resulting corner, Leahy headed Tom Bayliss’ corner back across goal and former Everton defender Pennington was on hand to head home and secure a deserved point for the Shropshire side.
