Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there is a lot of work to do to support workers and progressive values in Canada and the United States during his trip to Philadelphia on Tuesday.
I was invited to speak at a convention for a big union and ended up meeting with important people like vice-president Kamala Harris and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.
It was his first trip to a country below the United States since starting a new sales strategy called “Team Canada”. This strategy began during Donald Trump’s first term as president, when trade decisions made the relationship between the US and Canada unsure.
The approach involved having meetings with people from the US Congress, state governments, city leaders, and business executives, to make sure they knew and agreed that having good relationships with Canada is helpful for both countries.
The approach didn’t completely disappear, but it lost momentum after President Joe Biden won. This gave the Liberals a US government that is more supportive of their values and policies.
On Tuesday, Trudeau and Harris both gave speeches to the SEIU where they talked about making medicine cheaper, protecting abortion rights, and raising wages. Their speeches were very similar.
Trudeau said he was not giving his support to Biden by being there – he says he is not choosing sides in another country’s election.
Trudeau and Canada’s ambassador in Washington, Kirsten Hillman, say Canada would do the same thing whether Trump is running for president in November or not.
Trudeau told reporters that this message is important all the time.
Trudeau avoided answering questions about how worried he is about a Trump becoming president again. He said that what worked in the past should work again.
Trudeau said that during Mr. Trump’s time as president, we noticed that a good reason to not impose tariffs or protectionist measures on Canada was because it would also harm American jobs.
“That’s why I mentioned today that Pennsylvania exports more to Canada than to the next four foreign countries combined. ”
Canada says that 7.8 million people in the United States like something. Many people in the US have jobs because of trade with Canada, and many people in Canada have jobs because of trade with the US.
He seemed to make a new friend in Shapiro, who was elected governor for the first time just two years ago. Shapiro is seen as an important member of the Democratic party in the US and may run for president in 2028.
The two met for a short meeting before going on stage together at an event in Canada for business leaders, artists, and academics from Philadelphia.
Shapiro told Trudeau that he wants Pennsylvania to be the best state for renewable energy in the US, following Canada’s good example.
He repeated one of Trudeau’s favorite sayings about how diversity makes us stronger.
Both leaders said it’s important to protect freedom and democracy from increased false information, attacks on institutions, and citizens’ lack of trust in their leaders.
Trudeau talked to lots of union members at the SEIU convention and told them about how his government helps unions. He also talked about why it’s important for the US and Canada to have a good relationship.
“During this tough time for the world, Canada and the United States are there for each other,” Trudeau said.
“Today, it’s important to remember how special our partnership is. ”
The upcoming presidential election in America will be very important for the country.
Donald Trump may come back to the White House. This makes us think of the tough relationship with other countries when he was president before.
If he wins again, he has promised to add a 10% tax on all items brought into the country from other countries.
Trudeau and Hillman said Canada is safe from the threat because the renegotiated North American free trade agreement, which happened during Trump’s presidency, will protect Canada.
Canada is the most important country that buys things from the US. They buy almost one-fifth of all the things that the US sells to other countries. Mexico makes up about 1/6 and China makes up less than 1/10.
The US buys the most Canadian exports, making up 77% of all exports in 2023, which is almost $600 billion.

Trudeau pitches “Team Canada” while in Philadelphia
The prime minister, Justin Trudeau, is visiting Philadelphia today. This is his first trip south of the border since his government launched a new “Team Canada” charm offensive in the US.
He is now in Pennsylvania because he accepted an invitation to speak at the Service Employees International Union convention.
However, five months ago, Trudeau sent his industry and international trade ministers to work with American business leaders, labour unions, and state and municipal governments to create a new trade strategy.
The plan is happening as Americans are getting ready for a very important presidential election in both countries.
Donald Trump may come back to the White House, which makes us remember the challenging relationship between the US and other countries when he was in office before.
He said he will put a 10 per cent tax on imported goods if he is elected again.
In January, Trudeau said that Canada doesn’t want President Trump to be re-elected for a second term.
“He said in Montreal that it was hard the first time and it will be hard again if there’s a second time. ”
In the same speech, he said he met with a lot of US state governors during Trump’s time as president to tell them how important Canada is to them.
One week later, he introduced the updated “Team Canada strategy for dealing with the United States. ”
Trudeau is going to Philadelphia for one day. He will meet with Pennsylvania Gov Josh Shapiro, who is a popular member of the Democratic Party and may run for president in 2028.
It’s like what Canada did during the time Trump was president. They didn’t want to argue with him directly, so they talked to businesses and state governments instead.
During President Joe Biden’s time in office, the relationship between two countries has been more friendly, but still had some problems.
Canada and the US are working closely together to develop new technology for clean energy, like electric cars and their parts.
At first, Biden planned to give a big tax credit for electric cars made in America. Canada tried really hard and convinced the US to include cars made in North America before they finished the deal.
Canada is the largest player in the US economy, making up almost one-fifth of all things that the US sells to other countries. Mexico makes up about one out of every six of something, while China makes up less than one out of every ten.
The US is a very important market for Canadian exports. In 2023, 77 percent of all Canadian exports, which is almost $600 billion, went to the US.
China is in second place with $30 billion, which is four percent of all exports.
Canada spent $30 billion on electric cars in the last two years and is becoming a major place for making electric car batteries in North America. But a lot of those batteries are going to be used in electric cars that will be finished and sold in the US.
The US wants to get minerals from Canada for making clean technology like renewable energy and batteries.
Any changes to the taxes on imports could have a really bad impact on that plan.
Trudeau will also meet with important political and business people during his short visit. -

8 teenagers hurt in bus shooting in Philadelphia
Eight students from a Philadelphia high school were shot while waiting for a city bus after school. The shooters came out of a car and started shooting at them. This is the fourth shooting on the transit system in the past four days.
The last three shootings each resulted in someone being killed. At the bus stop, a 16-year-old student was seriously injured and got shot nine times, as mentioned by the city’s police commissioner, Kevin Bethel, during a news conference. The others were feeling okay.
Bethel said that the high school students at Northeast High School, who were 15 to 17 years old, were waiting for the bus at about 3 in the afternoon. Three people got out of the car and shot more than 30 times. The car was waiting at the scene.
The police got many calls about a lot of shooting on the highway near Dunkin’ Donuts in northeast Philadelphia.
The injured teenagers were brought to Einstein Medical Center and Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, as told by John Golden, who speaks for SEPTA. Two buses, a Route 18 bus and a Route 67 bus, were shot at, but no one on the bus got hurt.
Northeast High School is the biggest public high school in the city. It has over 3,000 students and is over a mile away from where the shooting happened.
Monique Braxton, who is in charge of talking to the public for the Philadelphia school district, said there was a shooting near Crossan Elementary. The school was letting students go home when it happened, but then they brought them back inside and made sure the school was secure. The police said everything was okay later.
Mayor Cherelle Parker, who was at the location with the city’s police commissioner, prosecutor, and school superintendent, said she wants everyone to know that they will do whatever it takes within the law to keep the people of the city safe and healthy.
Tony Watlington Sr. is the school principal. Officials are really sad and mad that innocent kids walking home from school were hurt by guns. They agree with the mayor that it’s enough and it needs to stop.
The area where the shooting happened was closed off with yellow police tape. There were lots of little flags on the wet ground marking evidence.
Jessica Healy, who lives in the neighborhood with her two-year-old daughter, said that the area has become more dangerous lately. She also mentioned that some of her neighbors are already planning to move because of things that have happened in the past.
“I feel really upset and worried that I don’t want to walk my daughter outside,” Healy said.
“I don’t want to stay here. ” I want to go somewhere else. “But my boyfriend has a good job here, so that’s why we’re staying,” she said.
Another person who has lived here for a long time, Brenda Keith, said she doesn’t do anything special to stay safe, except for being careful and paying attention to what’s around her in case she needs to leave quickly to avoid trouble. She knows some people might feel scared in the city or worry about taking SEPTA, but she won’t let shootings make her stop living her life.
“But other cities are going through this too. I’ve been here for a long time and things have gotten worse, but that’s just how life is,” Keith said.
On Wednesday, there was another shooting. In the past three days, there were also shootings where someone was killed while getting on, off, or riding a SEPTA bus.
The shooting happened on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m there was an argument, and then a fight started. One person got out of the car, then shot and hit a man with a 9 mm gun. He died soon after at a hospital.
The person who shot the gun, and was not allowed to wear a certain type of mask on the transit system, ran away. Officials were looking into why it happened, and there were no other people hurt.
Charles Lawson, who is in charge of SEPTA’s transit police, said that someone shot at the person while the driver was right behind them.
On Monday, a 17-year-old student died and four other people were hurt when someone started shooting at a bus stop. Two women were on a bus and they were hurt.
On Sunday, at about 11:30 p. m, a 27-year-old man was killed by another person soon after they both got off a bus. Witnesses saw the two people fighting, but the reason is still being looked into by the police.
No one has been arrested for any of the shootings, according to Frank Vanore, deputy commissioner of the Philadelphia police department, speaking on Wednesday.
There is less serious crime on the transportation system, but there is a new problem of people carrying illegal weapons and shooting others during arguments. He promised that officials will work hard and without any apologies to stop crime and use all the possible legal ways to catch people with illegal guns.
“We are going to focus on people who are hiding their identity. ” We will focus on catching people who don’t pay for their train or bus tickets. “We will focus on stopping people from using drugs in public,” Lawson said. “We will focus on enforcing all the laws for criminals. ”
Officials are going to keep a closer eye on security cameras and finding ways for employees to report problems without anyone knowing. -

The woman, who is 66 years old, had a piece of cloth in her mouth when the investigators found her, according to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.
Investigators said that they found a sock in her mouth, according to WPVI.
The woman was declared dead right where it happened. We don’t know who she is and we don’t know why she died.
Officials have said that the woman had a job at American Airlines.
The police informed KYW-TV that the lady is from Las Vegas.

Man breaks into truck, steals roughly $200,000 in dimes
An investigation is underway after someone broke into a truck trailer and made off with as much as $200,000 in dimes.
Per a report from KYW-TV in Philadelphia, the seemingly cumbersome theft in question was discovered early Thursday. Local police say the unattended trailer was broken into, allegedly with bolt cutters, while it was stationed overnight in a Walmart parking lot.
While initial reports saw police estimating that roughly $100,000 in dimes had been taken from the parked tractor trailer, that estimate—per a separate report from regional outlet WPVI-TV—was later altered to be as high as $200,000 in dimes, i.e. as much as two million individual coins.
“That’s a lot of labor involved too, moving that amount of weight,” Captain John Ryan of the Philadelphia Police Department told reporters.
The truck in question had made a stop to pick up the coins in the Old City area earlier this week, with the driver leaving the trailer in the Walmart parking lot while he slept ahead of the continuation of his trek down to Florida. At the time of this writing, police had not publicly indicated any updates regarding a suspect. The investigation is believed to remain in progress.
“There’s been a lot of cargo thefts here and there in northeast Philly and south Philadelphia over the ensuing months where we’ve had lamb, chicken, TVS, refrigerators, etc. taken,” Ryan told reporters, adding that alcohol has also been targeted in such thefts.
Complex has reached out to the Philadelphia Police Department for additional comment. This story may be updated.

Harden leads 76ers’ late run as Mavs suffer playoffs blow
The Dallas Mavericks‘ playoff hopes suffered another setback after James Harden inspired the Philadelphia 76ers’ fourth-quarter charge on Wednesday.
The Mavs, who had lost seven of their previous 10 games coming into the contest, led 91-89 at three-quarter time at Wells Fargo Center before the home side rallied to triumph 116-108, clinching their 50th win of the season.
Harden provided the assists for all of Philadelphia’s points during a 10-0 run that flipped the contest, condemning the Mavs to a 37-40 record and leaving them in danger of missing the playoffs and play-in tournament in the Western Conference. Dallas failed to score in the final 3:18 of the game.
Joel Embiid returned from a one-game, calf-injury-enforced absence to boost his MVP aspirations with 25 points and nine rebounds, while Harden had 15 points and 12 assists.
Harden’s partnership with Embiid was on full show, with the pair holding the NBA’s best single-season record over the past 25 years for assists by one player to another, averaging 4.8 per game, ahead of Sacramento Kings duo Rajon Rondo and DeMarcus Cousins (4.0 in the 2015-16 season).
For the Mavs, Luka Doncic had 24 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, while Kyrie Irving added 23 points.
Philadelphia’s 50th win from their 76th game of the campaign marks the fewest amount of games required to reach that mark in franchise history since 2001.
The 50-26 76ers are third in the East, behind the Milwaukee Bucks (55-21) and the Boston Celtics (52-24).
The Bucks routed the Indiana Pacers 149-136 led by Jrue Holiday’s career-high 51 points and a Giannis Antetokounmpo triple-double.
Kings end NBA’s longest playoff drought
Sacramento ended their 17-year playoffs wait, the longest drought in NBA history, thanks to a 120-80 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Kings pulled away with a lopsided 70-34 second half, led by Domantas Sabonis (15 points and 12 rebounds) and De’Aaron Fox (18 points and six assists), while Keegan Murray passed Donovan Mitchell for the most threes made by a rookie (188) in his 13 points.
Sacramento clinching their playoff spot came amid a chaotic night in the West, with Jalen Williams’ buzzer-beating tip-in earning the 10th-placed Oklahoma City Thunder a 107-106 win over the Detroit Pistons. OKC occupy the final play-in spot.
Russell Westbrook scored 36 points as the fifth-placed Los Angeles Clippers ended the second-placed Memphis Grizzlies’ seven-game winning streak with a 141-132 victory, while the taunts continued as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Chicago Bulls 121-110.
Durant returns as Suns firm up fourth seed
Kevin Durant made his long-awaited home debut as he returned from a 10-game absence due to a sprained ankle, but he was rusty as the Phoenix Suns overcame the Minnesota Timberwolves 107-100.
Durant shot five-of-18 from the field for 16 points with eight rebounds and four assists. Devin Booker top-scored for the Suns with 29 points on eight-of-18 shooting from the field.
The 2014 MVP Durant shot two-of-four from three-point range, both in the fourth quarter, holding off the Timberwolves who drew level in the final period, with the win helping the Suns improve to 41-35 to sit fourth in the West.
