Booker helps Suns win on Thomas’ history-making night

Despite Cam Thomas scoring over 40 points for the third game in a row, the Phoenix Suns defeated the Brooklyn Nets 116-112 thanks to Devin Booker’s comeback from a month and a half absence.

Booker played on Tuesday for the first time since sustaining a groin injury in a loss to the Denver Nuggets in late December. During his 21-game absence, the Suns had a mixed record, including a stretch of six straight losses.

But against the Nets, Booker was back on track, scoring 19 points on 6-of-15 shooting and adding six assists in just 26 minutes to guide the Suns to yet another victory.

Booker was delighted to be back, telling reporters after the game: “That’s all I want right there, man.

“Just competition, being back out there with the band, feeling that energy, feeling that presence. The team has it rolling right now, so just inserting myself in a way that wasn’t disruptive and try to keep the flow that they have.”

Suns coach Monty Williams feels Booker’s desperation to win is the key to the positive effect he has on his team-mates, saying: “Devin’s attitude is always he just wants to eat. Kill and eat. That’s how he operates. And he’s a winner. And he wants to do everything he can to win the game.

“I thought the guys got a great deal of energy from him tonight just being on the floor. Everybody’s excited that he’s back.”

Another outstanding performance from Thomas, who at 21 years old became the youngest player to ever score 40 points in three straight games, nearly wrecked Booker’s successful return to the floor.

Prior to his 43-point performance in the loss to Booker’s Suns, the guard scored a career-high 44 points against the Washington Wizards on Saturday, followed by a second career-high 47 points against the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday.

While he was frustrated two of those games ended in defeats, Thomas is enjoying the historic form he finds himself in, stating: “It’s real surreal. I’m just glad to have my name in the history books, being this young.

“Obviously, I’d rather have the win because it sounds better when you have these 40-point games with the two [games] that we lost.

“But it’s just good to have my name in history, I’m just going to embrace it. Just be proud of all the hard work you put in.”

  • Herro scores career-high 41 points in close Heat win

Tyler Herro had to have a career game on Thursday for the Miami Heat to avoid becoming the Houston Rockets’ third high-profile victim in a row.

Herro led his team to a 111-108 victory with a game- and career-high 41 points on 13 of 20 shooting, including 10-of-15 from three-point range.

Jimmy Butler, an All-Star teammate of his, played an excellent supporting role, with 20 points (on 7 of 13 shooting), 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals, and 3 blocks.

Jalen Green led the Rockets, who were coming off victories over the Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns, in scoring once more with 22 points (eight of 21), while Kevin Porter Jr. was more productive with 21 points (10 of 17), five assists, and four steals.

The Heat have won three straight games to level their record at 15-15, and when they play the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday to wrap out their four-game road trip, they will have a great chance to move above.500.

    Morant dominates the Bucks

The Memphis Grizzlies led by 46 points after three quarters of their blowout win against the Milwaukee Bucks, allowing the starters to ride the bench down the stretch on the way to a 142-101 final score.

Last year’s Most Improved Player, Ja Morant, was at the center of the Grizzlies’ success with 25 points (nine-of-21), 10 rebounds and 10 assists, while eight Memphis players reached double-figures.

With the win, the Grizzlies improved their record to 19-9 and now sit alone atop the Western Conference.

Jazz fight off the Pelicans in overtime

The Utah Jazz continue to win at home, defeating the New Orleans Pelicans 132-129 to improve their record at Vivint Arena to 11-5 this season.

It is the second game in a row the Jazz have defeated the Pelicans after Tuesday’s 121-100 triumph, with Jordan Clarkson proving the hero this time around.

Clarkson scored a season-high 39 points on 15-of-26 shooting, adding eight rebounds and two steals, including the first four points of overtime after Pelicans youngster Trey Murphy III forced the extra period with a three-pointer in the dying seconds of regulation.

  • Paul urges Suns to be consistent after win over Clippers

Chris Paul has urged the Phoenix Suns to “keep this train moving” after they defeated the Los Angeles Clippers to snap a five-game losing streak.

On Thursday, the Suns defeated the undermanned Clippers 111-95 to put an end to their road trip.

Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, Norman Powell, Reggie Jackson, and Ivica Zubac were absent from Los Angeles because they were attacked in their own backyard.

Mikal Bridges led the way with 27 points, while Paul chipped in with 15 and added 13 assists in the victory that improved their record to 17-12.

Phoenix are now in fourth place in the Western Conference, and point guard Paul is eager to start winning.

“I’m happy we finally got a win out of this road trip, and we’re going to try to keep this train moving,” he said.

Bridges received accolades from Suns head coach Monty Williams for how he handled having a bad game against the Houston Rockets.

“He’s a prideful player,” Williams said. “He needed a forklift to get his lip off the ground the other night, he was so down about his performance.

“When he’s shooting the ball like (tonight), we’re a pretty good team.”

The Clippers are 17-14 and occupy eighth spot in the Western Conference.

  • Phoenix Suns and Mercury Owner Robert Sarver says he’s selling Franchises following investigation

Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury owner Robert Sarver has said that he will be selling both of the franchises, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

“As a man of faith, I believe in atonement and the path to forgiveness. I expected that the commissioner’s one-year suspension would provide the time for me to focus, make amends and remove my personal controversy from the teams that I and so many fans love,” Sarver said via a statement, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday. “But in our current unforgiving climate, it has become painfully clear that that is no longer possible – that whatever good I have done, or could still do, is outweighed by things I have said in the past. For those reasons, I am beginning the process of seeking buyers for the Suns and Mercury.”

The news comes on the heels of the NBA conducting an independent investigation into workplace misconduct, which concluded that “Sarver, on at least five occasions during his tenure with the Suns/Mercury organization, repeated the N-word when recounting the statements of others.”

The investigation also found that “Sarver engaged in instances of inequitable conduct toward female employees, made many sex-related comments in the workplace, made inappropriate comments about the physical appearance of female employees and other women, and on several occasions engaged in inappropriate physical conduct toward male employees.”

Sarver was ultimately handed down a $10 million fine and was suspended from the Suns and Mercury organization for one year.
