Plymouth beat Luton Town by 3 goals

Plymouth Argyle secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Luton Town in a tense Championship clash at Home Park, with Ibrahim Cissoko scoring twice to lead the charge.

The hosts took an early lead when Rami Al Hajj netted his first goal for Argyle just eight minutes into his first start, curling a stunning shot into the top corner from the edge of the box following some excellent interplay. Plymouth continued to press, creating more chances, but were unable to extend their lead before halftime. Luton Town’s Elijah Adebayo missed a critical opportunity to level the match.

Cissoko, a second-half substitute, extended Argyle’s lead with 20 minutes remaining, only for Victor Moses to pull a goal back for Luton just two minutes later. The Hatters ramped up the pressure as the match approached its conclusion, but they could not find an equalizer. Cissoko secured the win with a third goal in stoppage time, marking Plymouth’s second consecutive home victory under manager Wayne Rooney.

Luton entered the match after securing back-to-back league wins for the first time since last December, but it was Plymouth that struck first. Al Hajj’s well-controlled strike gave the hosts an early advantage after Ryan Hardie deftly laid off a pass from Michael Obafemi.

Three minutes later, Argyle could have doubled their lead, but an unmarked Obafemi missed a close-range chance, sending Morgan Whittaker’s cutback wide from 12 yards. The hosts nearly found a second goal midway through the first half when Bali Mumba’s scuffed shot fell to Al Hajj, but Luton’s goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski made a crucial save.

As the first half progressed, Luton began to assert themselves, with Tahith Chong having a close-range shot blocked and Adebayo heading a free kick over the bar. Five minutes before halftime, Plymouth squandered another opportunity when Joe Edwards fired straight at Kaminski after good work from Mumba.

Early in the second half, Adebayo missed a golden chance, heading Reece Burke’s cross over from six yards. Moments later, Plymouth thought they had sealed the victory when Cissoko scored after a brilliant run by Darko Gyabi. However, just as Argyle fans were celebrating a two-goal lead, Moses leveled the match for Luton, controlling Alfie Doughty’s cross and firing a low left-footed effort past Daniel Grimshaw for his first goal since joining the club.

Despite continued pressure from Luton, Plymouth’s defense held firm, and Adam Randell came close to scoring with a powerful effort that crashed off the Luton bar in the 86th minute. In stoppage time, Cissoko sealed the win by cutting in from the left, capitalizing on a blocked shot to score and secure Argyle’s second league win of the season.

Plymouth head coach Wayne Rooney shared his thoughts after the match: “I thought it was a good performance for different reasons. I thought first half we were good at times, controlled the tempo of the game and Luton tried to press us, and I think when we showed composure and played through the press we caused them problems. Second half we were a little bit sloppy with the ball and gave it away in dangerous areas at times, but I thought defensively our back four, and in particular the two centre-backs, were excellent. Luton are very good at set-pieces and I thought we were brilliant defending them and showed great character and desire to go and head the ball, and then the attacking players get all the praise when they score the goals.”

Luton Town manager Rob Edwards also reflected on the match: “Credit to the opposition, at both ends of the pitch they were better – they were more ruthless at one end and defended better at the other. I think we got into their final third 40-odd times, twice as often as they did, but we didn’t make their goalkeeper work enough. We weren’t clinical enough at one end then didn’t defend well enough at the other – it’s not a good recipe to win a football match. It’s really frustrating to come away losing a game talking about both ends of the pitch.”

Rooney given Plymouth Argyle head coach role

Plymouth Argyle, a Championship side, has appointed former England captain Wayne Rooney as their new head coach.

The 38-year-old takes over from Ian Foster, who was sacked on 1 April following a string of poor results.

Rooney’s appointment comes after his recent stint at Birmingham City, where he was dismissed on 2 January after a brief and disappointing tenure of less than three months, losing nine out of 15 games. Birmingham, previously in the Championship play-off places when Rooney assumed the role, was relegated to League One earlier this month.

This marks Rooney’s fourth head coach role, following his time as Derby County boss amidst the club’s financial struggles. He managed to secure Championship survival in May 2021 but left a year later after Derby’s relegation due to a points deduction for financial issues.

Rooney also spent 15 months as the boss of DC United in the United States but departed last October without achieving the MLS play-offs. His coaching staff at Plymouth will include first-team coaches Kevin Nancekivell and Simon Ireland, along with goalkeeping coach Darryl Flahavan, with more additions expected.

Rooney has already encountered Home Park and the club’s ‘Green Army’ fanbase during Plymouth’s 3-3 draw with Birmingham in December, the team’s first game following former boss Steven Schumacher’s departure for Stoke City.

“Taking this role at Plymouth Argyle feels like the perfect next step in my career – and I would like to thank the chairman and board for the faith they have shown in me,” Rooney said.

“This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting project. I look forward to helping to build a squad of players to play expansive football – and to entertain the Green Army.

“I have experienced first-hand how talented the existing group of players is here – and also the incredible atmosphere at Home Park.

“The club is on an exciting long-term journey, with a progressive plan in place. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of it.”

Argyle chairman Simon Hallett said Rooney approached the club when they began the process of recruiting their next head coach having ensured survival on the final day of the season.

“Throughout the interview process, Wayne showed himself to be a passionate, intelligent, and knowledgeable candidate with an appetite to prove himself and develop his managerial career,” added Hallett.

“So much so, that he reached out to the board when we started this process and was attracted by the project at hand and showed a real plan on how to lead the football club forward.

“His ambitions and aims match ours perfectly and we feel he is the perfect candidate to provide the exciting and attacking brand of football that we all like to see and help us achieve the club’s mission.”

Rooney likely to get Plymouth job

Wayne Rooney is poised to be officially announced as the head coach of Championship side Plymouth Argyle on Saturday following discussions regarding the vacant position.

At 38 years old, Rooney is eager to rebuild his coaching reputation after a challenging stint at Birmingham last season, where he suffered nine losses out of 15 matches.

Plymouth Argyle has been in search of a new manager since the departure of Ian Foster towards the end of the previous season. Director of football Neil Dewsnip and coach Kevin Nancekivell assumed interim roles for the remainder of the campaign, successfully steering Plymouth to safety, ironically at the expense of Birmingham.

Dewsnip’s familiarity with Rooney from their time together at Everton‘s academy likely played a role in the decision-making process.

Rooney boasts an extensive playing career, amassing 763 appearances for clubs such as Everton, Manchester United, MLS side DC United, and Derby County.

Transitioning into coaching, Rooney took on a player-coach role at Derby in November 2020, eventually assuming the permanent managerial position. However, he announced his retirement just two months later.

During his tenure at Derby, Rooney oversaw 85 matches before returning to the United States to manage his former club, DC United. Subsequently, he took the helm at Birmingham in October 2023 but was dismissed less than three months later.

    Relegation-threatened Plymouth beat Leicester

Leicester missed an opportunity to pull ahead at the top of the Championship table as they suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Plymouth, courtesy of Mustapha Bundu’s 21st-minute winner.

Ipswich, in second place, remain level on points with Leicester, while Leeds are one point behind, with all three clubs having four matches left.

Despite being managerless, Plymouth climbed to 16th place after securing their first home win in seven matches, under the caretaker management team of director of football Neil Dewsnip and first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell. They now sit five points clear of the relegation zone.

Leicester tested Plymouth goalkeeper Michael Cooper early in the match, with Abdul Fatawu and Ricardo Pereira forcing saves in the opening minutes. Stephy Mavididi also went close with a curling shot.

However, Plymouth took the lead against the run of play in the 21st minute when Mustapha Bundu scored a fierce angled drive after being released by Adam Forshaw.

Leicester continued to push for an equalizer, with Harry Winks and Dan Scarr going close, and Patson Daka and Jamie Vardy also had chances, but Plymouth held on for a vital victory.

A woman who was “loved by many” has received tributes following her weekend death in Plymouth.

Police were summoned to a home in Ilbert Street at around 4.15 p.m. on Saturday after receiving complaints of worries for the safety of a woman, and Hazel Huggins, 53, was discovered inside.

Emergency first aid was administered after officers forcibly entered the residence, but Hazel was pronounced dead on the scene.

On July 31, Bradley Huggins, 24, of Ilbert Street, Plymouth, is scheduled to appear before Plymouth Magistrates’ Court on a charge of murder.

It is assumed that they knew one another.

“Hazel was a bright shining light and loved by many,” claimed Hazel’s family. The family requests privacy at this time as they are grieving their loss.

  • Plymouth 4-2 Exeter: Supersub Hardie earns leaders victory

Ryan Hardie came off the bench to score twice and send Plymouth four points clear at the top of League One following a thrilling 4-2 comeback win over Devon rivals Exeter at a rain-soaked Home Park.

Hardie fired into the roof of the net on the turn in the 70th minute after collecting Morgan Whittaker’s incisive pass into the penalty area.

And the Scottish striker latched onto another through ball from Whittaker to slot home a killer fourth after 84 minutes to clinch Argyle’s ninth successive home league win.

Exeter opened the scoring when Jay Stansfield shrugged off Bali Mumba’s challenge on the left flank to tee up Archie Collins for a far-post tap-in after 26 minutes.

Argyle hit back immediately as Whittaker spun on Adam Randell’s inch-perfect ball into the box to fire past goalkeeper Jamal Blackman.

Stansfield again split the Argyle defence to put Sam Nombe in on goal and he rounded Michael Cooper to put the Grecians 2-1 ahead in the 52nd minute.

City celebrations were again short-lived, though, as Mumba met a clearance from a corner with a thumping 25-yard strike off the slick surface and into the corner, with Hardie going on to steal the show.
