Wontumi released; meets GHS25m bail conditions, spends 3 night in police custody

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has been released from police custody after spending three nights in detention.

His release followed the fulfillment of bail requirements totaling GHS25 million, imposed in connection with two separate illegal mining cases currently before the court.

On October 7, he was unable to meet the bail conditions set by the Criminal Division of the High Court in Accra.

In one of the cases, the court granted him GHS15 million bail with two sureties, while in the other, an additional GHS10 million bail was set, also with two sureties—one of whom must justify with landed property.

The court further directed Wontumi to report to investigators once every week for the first month and prohibited him from traveling outside the country without explicit approval.

The NPP regional chairman is facing several mining-related charges, including engaging in illegal mining activities and aiding environmental degradation within the Tano Nimire Forest Reserve.

A bail of GHS1 million with two sureties has been granted to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

This development comes after Chairman Wontumi appeared before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, over alleged involvement of Akonta Mining in illegal mining (galamsey) activities.

A week ago, Chairman Wontumi, who is said to be the owner of Akonta Mining, appeared at the CID with his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, following an order from the Attorney General (A-G), Dr. Dominic Ayine.

Speaking to the media, Wontumi’s legal counsel, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, revealed that his client had been charged with mining-related offences.

“The charges are related to mining. Wontumi has been charged with mining without a license and other related offenses,” he disclosed.

On Friday, October 3, Dr. Ayine had threatened to arrest him if he failed to surrender to the CID. According to the Attorney General, little progress had been made in investigating the allegations as key documents were withheld by some officials of the previous administration.

In April, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, revoked Akonta Mining’s license for illegally mining within the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Western North Region.

The Minister noted that the company had extended its illegal activities to both the Aboi and Tano Nimiri Forest Reserves, despite possessing a valid license to operate outside forest reserves.

In response, the company refuted the claims, stating in a press release: “We are not responsible for the activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve. That responsibility lies solely with the Forestry Commission and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.”

The company added that the accusations were “a deliberate attempt by the Minister to tarnish the reputation of the company. The decision by the Minister to publicly accuse us and call for the revocation of our license without any investigation or hearing is not just unfair, it is a clear breach of natural justice and a politically motivated act.”

Chairman Wontumi’s expected reappearance comes amid mounting pressure on the Mahama-led administration to end illegal mining activities in the country. The menace continues to threaten Ghana’s water bodies, food crops, forest reserves, and energy infrastructure.

In a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on Friday, October 3, President John Dramani Mahama noted that he can only declare a state of emergency over the issue when his government’s advisors approve it.

According to him, the advisors believe the country can overcome galamsey by adopting best practices in small-scale mining, including technologies that help neutralize or remove harmful chemicals from water bodies.

President Mahama added that the country could eradicate the long-term problem if it deployed more troops and invested more resources in the fight. “While we are fighting the menace, I am also saying we should uptake technology in order to protect the environment. So yes, let’s fight illegal mining, but at the same time, let’s bring the new technology that will help us protect our environment.

“Now with the elephant in the room, state of emergency, yes, I have the power to do it, but the president acts on the advice of the National Security Council. As of now, this moment, the National Security Council believes that we can win the fight against galamsey. Declaring a state of emergency… I want to assure you that the day they advise me otherwise, that boss, now we need a state of emergency, I won’t hesitate,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy has issued a stern warning about the potential future repercussions of galamsey if the country fails to find a lasting solution. During a visit to the Anwomaso Thermal Power Station in Kumasi on Wednesday, October 1, Deputy Ranking Member Collins Adomako-Mensah revealed how Ghana’s power installations are being tampered with by illegal miners.

According to him, electricity generation authorities—including the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), the Bui Power Authority (BPA), WAPCO Gas Pipeline, and the Volta River Authority—risk shutting down due to attacks on their infrastructure.

“When we were engaging the other participants, two things came up—one has to do with galamsey, and it is having a heavy, heavy toll on the energy sector, not just about water. GRIDCo complained about galamsey.

“Their pylons, people are digging where they have a lot of their pylons. Yesterday we were at Bui, and the Bui water situation is deteriorating because of the galamsey situation surrounding their water bodies,” he said.

In September, GRIDCo expressed grave concern over the encroachment on its transmission tower sites by galamsey operators, who are digging dangerously close to the foundations.

Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Engineering and Operations Frank Otchere stated that maintenance teams now face attacks when attempting to access certain areas.

“Unfortunately, there are some areas that even when our maintenance teams go there, they get shot at. And some of them have had to run away,” he disclosed, adding that the situation has made it impossible for GRIDCo to operate in certain locations without security support.

He added that galamseyers are weakening the towers, which are carefully engineered to withstand immense weight and pressure, and appealed for urgent assistance from national security agencies to protect transmission corridors and avert potential collapses.

“This engagement aims to provide a platform for frank and constructive dialogue between the Government and civil society on the menace of illegal mining, with a view to harnessing collective expertise, perspectives, and solutions to address this national challenge,” the letter stated.

Ongoing research by a forensic histopathologist and former Head of Pathology at KNUST and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Prof. Dr. Paul Poku Sampene Ossei, has revealed alarming trends in rising cases of spontaneous abortions among pregnant women in Ghana.

Approximately 500 cases have been recorded, linked to severe contamination of placentas and the presence of heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, resulting from galamsey activities.A spontaneous abortion is the unintentional expulsion of an embryo or fetus from the uterus before it is viable.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, September 27, Prof. Sampene warned that galamsey is poisoning unborn babies and endangering mothers. “I have about 500 cases where women go to the hospital and abort their babies because of the concentration of these heavy metals in their placenta,” he disclosed.

According to him, his research involved over 4,000 placentas examined from different regions across Ghana. The results showed dangerous levels of heavy metal contamination on both the maternal and fetal sides. “The placentas are all contaminated, polluted with heavy metals,” he said.

The dangers extend beyond pregnancy losses. Another effect of galamsey is the excessive use of alum to address the increasing turbidity of water. Ghana Water Company Limited, the nation’s largest water supplier, has resorted to using higher concentrations of alum. Prof. Sampene cautioned that high levels of aluminium hydroxide pose serious health risks.

“One of the consequences of excessive alum use is kidney disease, which is already on the rise. Of course, people are talking about turbidity, and then the Water Company is saying that they are using more alum.

“Alum is aluminium hydroxide. When taken at higher concentrations over a long period, it can cause kidney problems, irritate the respiratory tract, and lead to neurological defects. All these things have been proven, and we have to be very careful about them now. This goes apart from the effects we are seeing around,” he explained.

Among recent measures to protect water bodies from illegal miners is the deployment of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).

The Secretariat includes the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Immigration Service, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), the Narcotics Control Commission, and the National Security Secretariat.

Addressing the security forces, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, directed the team to ruthlessly counter galamsey operators as they are enemies of the state.

“Any recalcitrant entering into these zones is not merely a trespasser. They are an enemy of the state. You are to be firm. You are to be resolute. You are to be ruthless. And please, take it from me, you will take no obstructionist instruction from any big man. Remember, the biggest man in Ghana is the President of the Republic, and he’s the one who has sent you,” Mr. Kofi-Buah ch

NPP PC for Twifo Atti-Morkwa remanded on alleged fraud charges

The Assin Kyekyewere District Court has remanded the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary candidate for Twifo Atti-Morkwa constituency, Ebenezer Dwamena, into police custody.

Dwamena is charged with conspiracy to defraud by false pretence under section 131 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act 1960, Act 29.

According to the constituency communication officer, Dwamena referred friends to a car dealer after he successfully purchased a vehicle from the same dealer.

However, the dealer failed to deliver the vehicle after receiving payment, prompting the buyers to take the matter to court, which led to Dwamena’s remand.

Her Ladyship Sophia Priscila Yeboa Esq., the presiding judge, remanded Dwamena into police custody and forwarded the case to the Attorney General’s Office for further advice.

NPP Twifo Praso communication officer, Paa Amoako, stated that Dwamena was not directly involved in the fraudulent activities.

He recounted that Dwamena had guided his friends to the car dealer after purchasing a car himself. Despite making payments, the buyers never received the vehicle, causing Dwamena to have the dealer arrested.

However, due to the significant amount of money involved, the Praso Magistrate Court transferred the case to Fosu.

The judge decided to remand Dwamena and the two buyers for two weeks to allow for further investigation before proceeding with the hearing.

The communication officer for NPP in Twifi Praso, Paa Amoako told the media that “Ebenezer Obeng Dwamena is not involved in the case. The situation unfolded when Ebenezer Obeng Dwamena purchased a car for his personal use. Two of his friends expressed interest in a similar car, and Ebenezer Obeng Dwamena guided them to the place where he bought his. After negotiating the price of the car, they arranged to make some payments through the bank in installments. However, obtaining the car became problematic as the seller consistently asked them to return at a later time. This worried Ebenezer Obeng Dwamena because he was the one who had introduced them to the seller.”

“Consequently, Ebenezer Obeng Dwamena had the car seller arrested, and he was subsequently remanded, but the buyers never received the car. Due to the large sum of money involved, the Praso Magistrate Court transferred the case to Fosu. The court convened to hear the case yesterday. Upon their arrival, the judge did not allow their lawyers to speak. He stated that due to the large amount of money involved, all three individuals, namely Ebenezer Obeng Dwamena and the two other car buyers, should be remanded for two weeks for investigations to be conducted before the case is heard.”

Furious Keta residents urge IGP to probe demise of neighbour in police custody

A family, supported by fellow residents and a youth association in Keta in the Volta Region, is urging the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the passing of a community member, Jerry Kpesenu.

Jerry Kpesenu reportedly passed away while in the custody of the Keta police following his arrest.

The collective asserts that the deceased was mistreated and unlawfully killed due to his refusal to comply with police directives.

During a press briefing on Monday, June 10, spokesperson for the youth group, Forceman Doe William, stated, “Our immediate plea is for the IGP to promptly, as an urgent measure, suspend, I reiterate and emphasize, suspend the officers involved.

“Set up a five-member committee to include an appointed member from the deceased’s family and another from the Keta youth, and we request an independent autopsy in a highly professional pathology centre in Ghana at the cost of the police,” he said.

Mr. William contended that had the authorities summoned the deceased to the police station in a respectful manner, he would still be alive today.

As reported by the Daily Graphic on June 6, the individual in question prevented their tenant from installing an air conditioner in their rented space, asserting that the tenant required their consent to proceed.

This resulted in a heated confrontation between them, prompting the tenant to report the incident to law enforcement.

The family spokesperson recounted that two law enforcement officers, one in uniform and the other in plain clothes, arrived at his residence and commenced assaulting him before escorting him to the Keta Divisional Police Command, where he purportedly succumbed to the inflicted mistreatment.

Nevertheless, law enforcement authorities maintain that the 45-year-old individual fell ill while under detention and was swiftly transported to the Keta Municipal Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased upon arrival.

  • 6 in police custody for death of family head

6 in police custody for death of family head

Six individuals have been remanded in police custody by the Tema District Court in connection with the death of Charles Martey Odam in Adjumador, a town near Afienya in the Ningo-Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region.

The accused individuals, as reported by The Chronicles newspaper on May 18, 2023, are George Martey (67), a farmer; Nelson Anum Martey (59), a mechanic; Nii Marteye Martey Nathaniel (39), a businessman; Michael Martey Morrison (35), a businessman; Thomas Martey (34), a freelance writer; and Daniel Martey (35), a welder. All of them are residents of Adjumador.

During the court proceedings presided over by Her Ladyship Siran Mahama, the prosecutor presented a brief summary of the case. The complainant, Martey Samuel Mensah, is a building contractor, while the deceased, aged 70, was a pensioner who resided in an eight-bedroom self-contained house in Adjumador.

According to the report, the complainant, the accused individuals, and the deceased are all relatives of the Changha Martey Family in Adjumador, with the deceased serving as the family head. The report further stated that George Martey, one of the deceased’s brothers, had expressed dissatisfaction with his leadership of the family.

As a result, the accused individuals allegedly subjected the deceased to unfounded abuse and threats. The deceased shared a room with his 27-year-old daughter, Judith Merley Martey, who works as a pharmacy assistant.

The newspaper went on to narrate that on November 1, 2022, during the day, all the accused people, aside from Daniel Martey and the witnesses Elizabeth Tetteh and Samuel Narh, appeared before the Tema Community 8 Police regarding a plot of land that was the subject of an investigation involving the accused people and the witnesses.

At the time of investigation by the police of the Community 8 station, George Martey announced himself as the family head of the Changha Martey Family of Adjumador.

Elizabeth Tetteh, who is the witness in the case, disclosed that the deceased was rather the family head and not George Martey. This led to exchanges between them.

The police scheduled them for another meeting on November 4, 2022, for George to produce his family head, Charles Martey Odam, who is now deceased.

The newspaper chronicled the series of events that transpired leading to the killing and subsequent arrest of the six persons below:

On November 1, 2022, Michael Martey Morrison, in the afternoon, contacted the complainant on the phone and registered his displeasure about the family headship and demanded to have a meeting with the complainant and the deceased.

On November 2, 2022, at 1:00 am, the witness, Judith Martey, was awakened by a sound from a gunshot but did not know the actual direction from which the gun was fired.

She woke up around 4:00 am, the usual time she began her daily chores and prepared to take her son to school and continued to Afienya, her workplace.

On the same day, at about 11:00 am, Judith received a phone call from her uncle, Quarshie Isaac Martey, to the effect that masons working for her father (deceased) had gone to the house to work but were unable to find her father.

Both Judith and Isaac rushed home, opened the deceased’s door, and found his lifeless body by the side of his bed in a pool of blood.

A complaint was lodged, and investigations were initiated. Two spent cartridges were retrieved behind the deceased’s bedroom window.

Police preliminary investigation disclosed that the death of the deceased was a result of the dispute over who becomes the rightful person to be the head of the family.

Crime Scene experts who visited the scene picked fingerprints and other evidence which are yet to be matched with those of the suspects.

Man dies in police custody in Ashanti Region

A 30-year-old man is claimed to have passed away while being held by the police in Jachie Pramso, in the Ashanti Region, after he was denied bail.

Police detained Ernest Acheampong on Saturday after learning that he may have stolen a cell phone.

The police allege that the suspect killed himself while still in detention by hanging, but his family has angrily denied the allegations.

According to the family of the deceased, Ernest Acheampong was arrested by two police officers for phone theft while on his way to work on Saturday.

The suspect is said to have resisted arrest, resulting in a cut in the face of one of the officers.

Ernest was later arrested by the police.

Brother of the deceased, Kofi Owusu, says efforts to get the suspect released were unsuccessful.

“Our Uncle had gone to the station on Saturday to seek bail for him but was unsuccessful. They told us it was a weekend so they can’t admit him on bail. We were there on Sunday as well. The police again refused us bail on Monday 6th March since it was a holiday,” he said.

The family was called on Tuesday to the police station to the news of the demise of their relative.

The family says the police claim that their relative committed suicide is untenable.

Kofi Owusu added, “My uncle went to the police cells to meet his lifeless body hanged dead. He had cuts on his chest but we don’t believe it was suicide. They said he used a bed sheet in the cells to commit the suicide.”

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue.

  • National Security operative accused of robbing gold dealer remanded

A National Security operative accused of robbing a gold company director of 5kg of gold worth GHS2.7 million has been remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit court.

Kelvin Prince Boakye, aka Don King, has been charged with conspiracy to commit crime to wit robbery, robbery, and possession of unregistered Burni pistol loaded with three rounds of 9 mm ammunitions without authority.

Boakye, 48, has denied the various charges and expected to reappear on December 13, 2022, before the court presided over by Mrs Evelyn Asamoah.

The prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Maxwell Oppong, narrated that the complainant, name withheld, was the manageress of Wahid Gold Company Limited, Tesano.

It said the company dealt in gold and that the Managing Director, Mohammed Ko Chan Tha, was domiciled in Dubai.

It said the accused claimed to be a national security personnel and residing at Sowutuom, Accra.

The prosecution told the court that on November 5, this year, the complainant and other workers, who were witnesses in the case, went to buy 5kg of gold from the accused person’s accomplices at the cost of GHS2.731,138.

It said the gold was taken to SSL Refinery at Kotoka International Airport Terminal two for testing.

The prosecution held that after the testing, it was confirmed to be pure gold.

It said the accused person’s accomplices who were yet to be arrested lured the complainant to escort them to Accra Mall with the money.
