Police officer caught by chief smoking ‘weed’

A uniformed police officer has been caught in the act of smoking ‘weed’ in a community in Akim Etwereso, in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The unidentified police officer was caught by the chief of the community, only referred to as Daasebre in the video.

In a video credited to Angel TV, the police officer is initially seen and heard pleading with the chief and some men he appeared on the scene with.

But in a very quick turn of events, the police officer switched moods after he had been confronted with the facts of having been caught red-handed.

This also follows an attempt by the policeman to deny having been smoking ‘weed’ when he was caught.

“That what? What kind of big offense are you talking about? So will you arrest me, or add this one to me? What are you telling me? I don’t go that way? Do you know where I’m from and the work I came to do here? Or do you think I’m only at the barrier? And you are telling me that you’ll arrest me?

“Are you done arresting the folks in this village?” the visibly angry policeman burst out.

Expressing shock at his reaction, the chief, in a very calm way, addressed the questions of the policeman by asking him if he was aware of the directives he (the chief) had issued in his town.

“Hear me; the people I am walking with are with the National Security… the statement you made that ‘have we finished arresting the people of this community’ is very unfortunate. Do you know the instructions I have issued in this community?” he quizzed the policeman.

The policeman then pleaded for mercy, acknowledging to the chief that he was at fault, while apologising for the way he spoke earlier.

The chief of the community has since vowed to ensure that he reports the behaviour of the policeman to the Inspector General of Police, COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

Cause of fire that killed police officer, family revealed

A faulty air-condition is suspected to have caused the inferno that killed the late Sergeant Owusu Asante Baafi at Apromase near Kumasi on Monday dawn.

The deceased security officer, said to be 35 years old, was unfortunately burnt beyond recognition together with his wife, Yaa Achiaa, and their three months old child.

The IGP and the other security chiefs in the country rushed to the disaster scene on Monday to inspect the extent of damage but they did not readily state the cause of the fire.

But addressing section of the media in Kumasi on Tuesday afternoon, head of the Ashanti Regional REGSEC, Simon Osei Mensah, said an air-condition may have started the fire.

“Preliminary investigations are alluding to an air-condition that he (Asante) fixed in the room recently that caught fire and led to the unfortunate situation on Monday dawn,” he said.

Osei Mensah, who doubles as the Ashanti Regional Minister, visited the disaster scene. He, however, said the investigators were yet to come out with their final findings.

According to him, Sergeant Asante Baafi tried his best to open the door to his room and save himself, his wife and their child but all his efforts proved futile in the end.

“His charred body was found right behind the door, the key was also broken in the door. He made every effort to open the door and save his wife and baby but to no avail.

“It is suspected that the China door expanded when it caught the fire and that made it impossible for him to open it and flee with his family from harm’s path,” he said.

Expressing his condolences to the bereaved family and the police service, he advised the public to always consider their security and safety, in their homes to avert deaths and injuries.

The motorist and his friend were seen in the video dragging the police officer to the ground and severely hitting him.

A situational report following the incident indicates that on Monday, December 12, 2022, the police officer was directing traffic at the University of Cape Coast main gate, and the driver and his mate were on board a Mercedes Benz Trotro (commercial vehicle) from Elmina, heading towards Accra.

According to the report, on reaching the UCC gate, they were arrested by the officer for a motor traffic offence and were asked to drive the vehicle to the police headquarters at Pedu in the Central Region.

  • Police Officer granted GHS100,000 bail for defrauding by false pretense

A Police Officer, who allegedly impersonated the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare and Director-General of CID, COP Ken Yeboah, has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court.

General Corporal Akonor Opoku was charged on two counts of attempt to commit crime and defrauding by false pretense.

He pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The Court, presided over by Mrs Adelaide Abui Keddey, admitted the accused person to bail in the sum of GHS100,000.00 with two sureties.

The bail was granted when the Court found out that the accused person was not fright risk and had a fixed place of abode as prayed by his Counsel, Mr Kofi Agyena Agyemang.

The Court ordered the prosecution to file and serve all disclosures and witness statement within 21 days.

The case has been adjourned to August 31, 2022, for Case Management Conference between the parties.

Police Chief Inspector Richard Amoah, prosecuting, told the Court that the complainant was a Lebanese and a resident of Tema Community 11, whilst the accused person was a Police Officer stationed at National Patrols Department of the Ghana Police Headquarters-Accra.

The prosecution said on October 11, 2021, the complainant petitioned the Director General of CID to investigate and arrest one Nalia for stealing USD40,000.00 from his room on August 18, 2021.

On August 19, 2021, the complainant received text messages and phone calls on his Vodafone and MTN contact numbers from an unknown Airtel Tigo number posing as the IGP and the Director-General of CID.

Chief Inspector Amoah told the Court that the callers told the complainant that they knew where the suspect Nalia was hiding and that he should pay GHS10,000.00 for her arrest.

The prosecution said the complainant pleaded and sent GHS150.00 to the accused person through MoMo and promised to pay the remaining amount upon the arrest of the suspect.

Chief Inspector Amoah said the callers kept on calling the complainant and sending him text messages to demand for the balance.

The prosecution said the complainant, upon realising that the callers, whom he used to communicate with were neither IGP nor Director-General of CID, reported the incident to the Police.

Investigations revealed that a Bontel phone with two SIM slots with their relative IME’s used by two Airtel Tigo numbers to contact the complainant as the IGP and Director-General of CID was found to have been used in 198 times between the period of August 23,2021 and September 27, 2021, by the accused person with his personal phone number.

Further investigations revealed that the accused person registered the Airtel Tigo numbers from mobile money vendors, who were witnesses in the case, under the pretext of registering them for his superiors at the Police Headquarters-Accra.

  • Top DR Congo police officer found guilty of killing activist

A military court in the Democratic Republic of Congo has sentenced to death a high-ranking police officer for his role in the murder of top human rights activists Floribert Chebeya and his driver.

Christian Ngoy Kenga Kenga was pronounced guilty of murder, desertion and the misappropriation of weapons and ammunition, the court said on Wednesday.

Jacques Migabo, another police officer, was sentenced to 12 years, while Paul Mwilambwe who had been a key witness in the trial was acquitted, UN-sponsored Radio Okapi says.

In 2011, four policeman were sentenced to death for the murder – but it was thought that there were other more high-ranking officials behind the killing.

DR Congo has not carried out the death penalty for many years.

Chebeya led the Congolese charity The Voice of the Voiceless, and was a critic of the government. He had received regular threats to his life during his career of more than 20 years.

His body was found tied up in the back of his car on a roadside in the capital, Kinshasa, in June 2010. The discovery came on the day that he had gone to police general headquarters to meet the then head of national police, Gen John Numbi.

His driver Fidèle Bazana went missing on the same day and later the authorities pronounced him dead.

  • Two jailed 11 years for selling man to undercover police officer

Two persons who lured a 20-year old Beninois to Ghana to be sold for $160,000 to a police decoy have been sentenced to a total jail term of 11-years, by an Accra Circuit Court.

Ibrahim Keita, a 33-year old unemployed, would serve six years, while his accomplice, Baba Issah, a 31-year-old barber and a driver, would serve five years.

This was after the court, presided over by Mrs Christina Cann, had found them guilty on the charge of conspiracy to commit human trafficking.

Keita was additionally found guilty of human trafficking.

The Prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Agartha Asantewaa, told the court that both Keita, a Malian, and Issah resided at Agona Nyakrom in the Central Region.

The Prosecution said in April last year, the Swedru Police Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had intelligence that the two of them were looking for someone who would buy a young man.

Consequently, a police officer, in an undercover operation, began engaging them over the phone.

They initially asked for $150,000, but later increased it to $160,000, claiming that the cedi had depreciated.

The Prosecution said Keita, assured of a deal, lured the victim and sent him money for his transportation from Benin to Swedru.

When he arrived in Ghana on June 26, this year, he called Keita, who asked him to wait at a lorry station for him.

The Prosecution said Keita and Issah then arranged with their prospective buyer to complete the transaction.

In the process, they were arrested, while the police officer revealed his identity and rescued the victim.

The matter was duly referred to the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit at the CID Headquarters.

Chief Inspector Asantewaa said further investigations revealed that Keita had earlier travelled to Benin, where he and met the victim, who was assisting his aunt to operate a restaurant.

He discussed with him his desire to have his money doubled, but the young man could not assist Keita.

In September 2019, however, Chief Inspector Asantewaa said, Keita arrived at Agona Nyakrom and lodged with Issah.

Prosecution said Keita discussed with Issah his desire to have his money doubled, therefore, the two of them travelled to Wa in the Upper West and Assin Fosu, in the Central regions, but Keita could not find any helper.

Chief Inspector Asantewaa said Keita then asked Issah to find someone who would buy a human being for him.

The Prosecution said Keita thereafter called the victim and informed him that he had secured a job for him as a cleaner in Ghana.

They were, subsequently, arrested during the transaction at a spot in the Bawjiase Lorry Station at Agona Swedru.

Corporal Ghasty Yahaya Seidu, 37, with service number 43255 and attached to the Akuse District Police, has been sentenced to a total of 40 years in prison for robbery by a Circuit Court in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital.

The Presiding Judge, Mercy Addai Kotei, found him guilty of two counts of conspiracy to commit a crime, to wit robbery and robbery.

He is to serve 20 years for each count which runs concurrently for his involvement in a robbery operation at a fuel station during which the security officer at the location suffered injuries.

Corporal Seidu was arrested for his practical involvement in a robbery incident which occurred at Okwenya Shell Fuel Station on March 26, 2018.

He was picked up at Akosombo on April 26, 2018 following police intelligence.

Prosecuting, Assistant State Attorney Dickson Donkor told the court during the trial that a search conducted in the room of the policeman led to the retrieval of a pistol with two magazines and three 1.8mm ammunition, an axe, a knife, three paper spray cans, 10 wristwatches, a pair of handcuff and a bayonet.

The prosecutor noted that during the robbery operation, the suspect inflicted injuries on one Kudjo Akakpo, 42, a security man on duty at the fuel station.

The accused person pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and robbery.

At the end of the trial, the presiding judge held that the prosecution was able to prove its case against the police officer and convicted him accordingly.
