  • 15 armed policemen storm court as convict refuses to move to jail

    The premises of the Koforidua High Court was thrown into a state of disturbances by a convict who launched a profane tirade in courtroom after he was slapped with a total of 25 years imprisonment with hard labour on Friday, September 27.

    The convict, Yaw Antwi, 31, a farmer refused to be taken away by the few police personnel on duty at the Court to begin his prison sentence creating confusion at the Courtroom. It took the intervention of about 15 armed Police Officers dispatched from the Eastern Regional Police Headquarters to forcibly move him into a waiting vehicle to the Koforidua Prison.

    Yaw Antwi, an ex-convict notorious in Akyem New Tafo for death threats and causing harm was convicted by the Koforidua Circuit Court “B” presided over by Her Honour Mercy Adei Kotei on three different cases Prosecuted by Inspector Owusu Ababio.

    He was found guilty on varied counts of death threats, causing harm and disturbing public peace.

    The convict -Yaw Antwi was sentenced 10 years for attempting to kill his father, Boakye Boateng, at Akyem New Tafo. The convict haven threatened life of the father many times in November last year, attempted to slash the father with a cutlass. Again, he was sentenced eight (8) years for attempting to hack a Police Officer Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Yaro stationed at the Akyem New Tafo District Police Headquarters.

    According to the Prosecutor, Inspector Ababio on February 3, 2019, at about 6:30pm, the convict pulled a cutlass to hack the hand of the Police officer while in taxi had the driver not sped off, sensing danger.

    Lastly, the Court jailed Yaw Antwi to seven(7) years imprisonment on charges of disturbing Public Peace, threat of death and assault for storming a drinking spot with cutlass and brandishing same in fearful manner.

    The convict on February 2, 2019 at about 7:00pm went on rampage In Akyem Tafo township Wielding cutlass and in the dreadful melee invaded EDIMA drinking spot in Akyem New Tafo township and forcefully demanded he was served alcohol for free but was denied.

    This angered the convict who brandished cutlass amidst threats of killing the customers causing many to flee the spot.

    He hit him several times with the side of the cutlass and threatened to kill.

    After committing the act, the convict went into hiding but on March 25,2019 he resurfaced at Tafo Zongo to inflict cutlass wound on fingers of one of the youth having bitten him. This infuriated the youth who overpowered and handed him over to the Police.

    Before delivering the Judgement, the Prosecutor told the Judge that the suspect is notorious even after serving a five-year jail term in 2012 on the same offenses.

    Therefore the sentence will serve as a deterrent and also inure to his safety from the hands of angry community members.

  • Police find dead body in River Oti

    A decomposing body of an unidentified man has been found floating on River Oti at Monkratey in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region.

    It is not clear whether the deceased got drowned accidentally or was killed and thrown into the River.

    A joint team of the Police and the Municipal Environmental Health Officials, however, retrieved the body at shore of Monkratey and buried it.

    Police Superintendent Samuel Aboagye of Dambai District police command, told Ghana News Agency (GNA), that the body decomposed beyond identification and therefore could not be sent to mortuary for autopsy.

    Mr Aboagye said the Police had commenced investigations to unravel the cause of his death.

    He urged the public to assist the Police and promptly report any missing person to them.

  • 18 suspected criminals arrested in Tamale

    A joint military and police team has rounded up 18 suspected criminals in a swoop conducted in the Tamale Metropolis.

    The swoop took place on Wednesday, September 11. Substances suspected to be narcotics were seized.

    The team also impounded eight motorbikes belonging to some suspects who absconded.

    In a statement signed by the Northern Region Police Public Relations Officer DSP Yussif Tanko, the swoop was conducted in well-known criminal areas in the Tamale Metropolis including T Poly, Kaladan and Geshunayili.

    It further mentioned that the exercise is to ensure regular security operations at locations where criminals gather and plan their activities.

    “The exercise will continue at other places outside and within the metropolis to clean the region and ensure that law abiding citizens are not threatened and attacked by criminals,” it stated and called on the citizens to provide the police with the necessary information on hideouts of criminals.

    Meanwhile, the Tamale Magistrate Court presided over by His Worship Amadu Seidu has remanded 14 of the suspects into Prison custody.

    The remaining four were granted bail.

    The suspects were charged with meeting on premises for unlawful purposes contrary to section 155(1) of the criminal offences Act 29/50.

    They are to reappear on September 20.

  • Akufo-Addo warns police officers against acts of indiscipline

    The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has charged the personnel of the Ghana Police Service to eschew indiscipline in the discharge of their duties.

    He said without discipline and effective supervision, winning public support, winning public confidence and support to fight crime will remain an unattainable objective.

    He said government is committed to addressing the needs of the Service to consolidate effectively peace and security in the country but the police also have a role to play in ensuring that the desired results are achieved.

    “While government does its utmost to resource and retool the police service, it is important that discipline prevails throughout the service. This is a charge I give the acting Inspector General of police and the entire police administration.

    “The prevention of crime is a shared responsibility between the police and the public and without mutual respect, confidence and support, it will be extremely difficult to prevent and detect crime,” he added.

    He also charged the police force to help in the fight against corruption by staying away from corrupt acts that have over the years given the police a rather low public image.

    “The Police Service continues to suffer from low public image due to the involvement of some police officers in corrupt practices.

    “I urge you to join the fight against corruption in the service. It can no longer be the status quo. The citizenry can only have confidence in the police service when you are seen to be honest and prepared to enforce the law without fear or favour.”

    President Akufo-Addo said he has confidence in the current leadership of the police service to buck this trend and the newly graduating class should assist in this direction.

    “You should maintain a healthy relationship with the civilian population in line with the tenets of national integration and cohesion,” he said.

    CID to get Digital Forensic Laboratory

    The President also disclosed at the ceremony that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service will get a new Digital Forensic Laboratory by the end of 2019.

    President Akufo-Addo hopes the new lab will boost the work of the police investigators in the fight against crime.

    “The Criminal Investigations Department will by the end of the year be equipped with a Digital Forensic Laboratory.”

    He also disclosed that “for the first time in the history of the department, crime officers are giving a monthly allowance to support their investigations.”

    The CID Forensic Science Laboratory is also being retooled, the President indicated, adding that government is seeing to the continuous training of officers of the Department.

    “Government has given approval for the recruitment of 4,000 personnel to augment the strength of the police service. 961 of these recruits passed out between 22 and 31 July this year in various police training schools throughout the country.

    “The second batch of 1,000 recruits are also due to graduate by the end of this month. Another batch made up of 2000 men and women are scheduled to report for training by the end of this month. These are some of the measures put in place by the government to reform the police Service and make it fit for purpose,” he added.
