  • No NDC demonstrator was injured by our officers during ‘Enough is Enough’ demo – Police

No NDC demonstrator was injured by our officers during ‘Enough is Enough’ demo – Police

The Ghana Police Service has refuted claims that its officers injured any demonstrators during the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) nationwide ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration.

In a statement issued, the police firmly denied reports of a shooting incident at the Kumasi office of the Electoral Commission (EC), clarifying that no protestor had sustained injuries.

“There has been no shooting incident at the Kumasi office of the Electoral Commission and no demonstrator has been injured by the Police,” the statement emphasized. The police explained that while some demonstrators attempted to breach an agreed-upon arrangement by forcibly entering the EC’s Kumasi office compound, officers took necessary actions to restrain them. The police also urged the media to report responsibly and avoid spreading false information that could mislead the public.

The NDC’s ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration, which has been unfolding across the country, saw tensions rise in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region. Protestors clashed with police officers, leading to the arrest of one individual. Protestors reportedly forced their way into the Electoral Commission office in Kumasi, damaging property, including the destruction of some doors.

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, who was part of the protest, claimed to have been slapped by a police officer during the scuffle. However, the police have yet to address this allegation directly.

Ahead of the demonstration, the Ghana Police Service had issued clear guidelines for the protestors, urging them to adhere to designated routes and timelines to ensure a peaceful demonstration. The police assured the public of their commitment to maintaining law and order during the nationwide protest.

To this end, law enforcement officers have taken up strategic positions across the country, particularly in high-traffic areas such as Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, where a human barricade has been set up to control the crowds and ensure public safety.

The ongoing protest by the NDC is part of the party’s demand for a forensic audit of the 2024 voters’ register. The opposition party insists that such an audit is necessary to ensure transparency and fairness in the upcoming general elections. As the protest continues, the party’s leadership, including Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande, has urged demonstrators to conduct themselves responsibly. “The NDC will not tolerate any disruptive behavior during the protests,” Gbande warned.

The ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration has sparked widespread activity across the country, with protestors calling for reforms within the electoral system, particularly with regards to the voters’ register.

  • Police arrest fan for vandalism at Baba Yara Stadium in Ghana vs Angola game

Police arrest fan for vandalism at Baba Yara Stadium in Ghana vs Angola game

Chaos erupted at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Thursday evening after Ghana’s 1-0 loss to Angola in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group F qualifier.

A section of angry Ghanaian fans stormed the pitch following Angola’s dramatic 93rd-minute winner, hurling plastic bottles and other objects onto the field.

In the wake of the defeat, the frustrated crowd turned destructive, kicking over almost all the pitch panels installed at the stadium. The situation spiraled out of control before police intervened, managing to arrest one fan in connection with the vandalism. However, by the time the arrest was made, the damage to the stadium had already been done.

This latest incident of fan misconduct is expected to bring a heavy sanction from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), adding to the series of penalties Ghana has faced for similar disturbances during high-profile matches.

In January 2024, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) was slapped with a $15,000 fine by CAF after fans breached security protocol during an AFCON group stage match against Cape Verde. In an earlier case from November 2019, Ghana was fined $10,000 following a pitch invasion during an AFCON 2021 qualifier against South Africa at Cape Coast Stadium.

With Thursday’s events, Ghana risks further sanctions, potentially impacting future games at the Baba Yara Stadium. The GFA has yet to comment on the incident or any potential steps to address the behavior of fans at the stadium.

Ghana’s defeat to Angola has left the Black Stars with much work to do in their quest for AFCON qualification, but the focus now shifts to potential repercussions from the violence that marred the end of the match.

  • Ghana Police Service’s communication style not illegal – IGP defends

Ghana Police Service’s communication style not illegal – IGP defends

Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has firmly defended the current centralized communication strategy adopted by the police, dismissing appeals for its reversal.

The centralized approach has faced criticism from various stakeholders in the media, who argue that it hinders the timely and effective dissemination of information.

During his address at JoyNews’ event focused on media protection and freedom on August 30, Dr. Dampare emphasized that the Police Service’s communication practices are fully compliant with the law. He acknowledged the concerns raised but reiterated that the centralized system is not in violation of any legal provisions.

“At least no one has said the police has breached any law. We are within the law in all our actions,” Dr. Dampare stated. He further noted the importance of addressing the issue in a constructive manner, saying, “All these concerns are appeals, and with appeals, how they are made is how we receive them.”

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has been vocal in its opposition to the centralized communication mechanism. In a 2022 statement signed by its President, Albert Dwumfour, the GJA urged the Police Administration to reconsider its stance, citing potential risks such as speculation, misinformation, and disinformation.

Dwumfour reiterated these concerns at the event, expressing disappointment that despite previous assurances, the Police have not revisited their decision.

“We raised the issue again and received assurances that the matter would be considered. To date, we have received no positive response. We are once again urging the Ghana Police to decentralize information, thereby facilitating easier access to it,” Dwumfour asserted.

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure also weighed in on the matter, warning that the slow dissemination of information under the centralized system could lead to the spread of fake news.

“If we have to go to the Police headquarters to get that information, the fake news would spread, and by the time the national headquarters comes out with the truth, nobody may really remember what happened,” Azure cautioned.

Addressing earlier discussions on the subject, Dr. Dampare explained that the previous decentralized communication approach had become problematic for the service. He highlighted issues such as the release of incomplete or inaccurate information, which, in his view, was damaging the service’s reputation and creating public disaffection.

The decision to centralize communication was therefore taken after extensive consultations with regional commanders and Public Relations officers across the service.

  • Police arrest 2 students for lynching spiritualist at  Twifo Praso

Police arrest 2 students for lynching spiritualist at  Twifo Praso

Two students from Twifo Praso Senior High School have been arrested by the police for allegedly mobilizing their colleagues to lynch a spiritualist, identified as Abdul Latif.

The violent incident occurred on the evening of Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Twifo Praso in the Central Region, after Latif accused one of the students of stealing a mobile phone.

According to reports, a junior student’s phone had gone missing, prompting the students to seek the help of Abdul Latif, a local spiritualist, to identify the culprit.

After performing his spiritual investigations, Latif accused one of the senior students of being responsible for the theft.

Enraged by the accusation, the student reportedly rallied a group of around 10 of his colleagues to ambush Abdul Latif. They severely beat him until he died. After the attack, the group dragged Latif’s body into a nearby bush and attempted to conceal it by covering it with weeds.

The police, upon discovering the body, retrieved it and transported it to the Twifo Praso Government Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting autopsy. The two students suspected of leading the mob attack are now in police custody, facing charges related to the lynching.

Graphic Online’s Central Regional correspondent, Shirley Asiedu Addo, is said to have reported that the incident has sparked outrage among some youth in Twifo Praso, who planned to storm the school in retaliation for Latif’s death.

However, swift intervention by the police averted further violence. Reinforcement teams from the Central North Regional Police Command were deployed to the area to maintain order and ensure peace.

The father of the deceased, Yaw Nkrumah, disclosed that this was not the first time his son had been targeted by students from the school. He revealed that Latif had been attacked twice before by students following the initial phone incident but had managed to escape without harm. Sadly, the third attack resulted in his death.

There is no militia training happening at Bawku – Police

The Ghana Police Service has entreated the public to disregard reports suggesting that some militiamen are being trained at Bawku in the Upper East Region.

In a post on its Facebook platform, the Service noted that its outfit carried out an investigation after receiving reports of such alleged actions.

Following its probe, the Police indicated that “our investigation has found no evidence of such training in the area or its environs.”

The Police are presently on a manhunt for the individual(s) responsible for the misinformation that caused a section of the general public unrest.

“The Police are working to bring the perpetrators to book and the public should be assured that we will get them,” its statement noted.

According to the Service, this is the second of such false publications within a week by some unpatriotic individuals intended to create unnecessary alarm and panic among the public.

Earlier this month, a joint inter-security agencies patrol initiative was launched in Bawku to help restore lasting peace and security in the area.

This followed clashes involving personnel of the various security services in Bawku, Paga and Kulungugu and some residents.

The incident, which occurred around 3:00 am on Sunday, has left the community shaken.

When Ahadzi reached the estate gate, a disagreement reportedly broke out over the fare charged by Gyekyi. The argument escalated, and Gyekyi allegedly drew his firearm and shot Ahadzi multiple times without provocation.

Crime scene investigators responded to the distress call and found Ahadzi lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds, his body covered in blood. His remains were subsequently transported to the Police Hospital morgue, where an autopsy will be conducted.

How a young man was beaten, robbed by police officers at Jubilee House

A young man named Emmanuel has come forward with shocking allegations against police officers, claiming he was beaten and robbed near Jubilee House in Accra.

“I was on an okada moving from Accra when I got to Flagstaff House and was stopped by some police officers on new motorcycles,” Emmanuel recounted. He disembarked from the motorcycle when the driver sped off, prompting the officers to chase the rider unsuccessfully.

The officers then turned their attention to Emmanuel, arresting him despite his protests of being only a passenger. “They told me to keep quiet, and out of nowhere, one of the officers slapped me. After that, they cuffed my hands,” he said.

Emmanuel detailed a harrowing experience, stating that the officers took him to an undisclosed location where they beat him severely and even shocked him with an electric device. They then demanded his mobile money code, threatening his life in the process.

“They took the money I had on me, GHC120. They kept threatening me, and I gave them the code. They transferred GHC3,750 from my phone.”

The situation escalated when one officer suggested they shoot him after obtaining the money.

“The one with the gun is an Ewe man, so I started engaging him in our dialect. He convinced the other officer to let me go, and they abandoned me in an unfamiliar area,” Emmanuel revealed.

After finding his way home, Emmanuel decided to lodge a formal complaint at the Adenta Police Station but was directed to the Cantonment Police Station instead.

There, he was informed that the mobile money account used for the transfer was linked to a police officer. However, the officers refused to let him see the suspect’s face.

Emmanuel expressed frustration, noting that it has been three weeks since the incident and no arrests have been made despite the ongoing investigation.

Lawyer sues Police, AG over Akufo-Addo’s Deputy IGP appointment

A private lawyer has challenged the Attorney General (AG) and the Ghana Police Service (GPS) regarding the appointment of a Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Mr Justice Abdulai argues that the selection of COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno is unconstitutional.

3 individuals in police grips over theft of persons a week-old baby

The Kasoa Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service has apprehended three individuals accused of abducting a baby less than a week old.

The suspects—Magdalene Nana Adwoa Boafo, 28; Faustina Binney, 32; and Eunice Koomson, 36, a teacher—reportedly took the baby from its mother, Ms. Abigail Addison, 29, under the false claim that the infant had an infection requiring specialist treatment.

Ms. Addison recounted that Adwoa Boafo, the primary suspect, approached her when she was eight months pregnant, offering financial assistance.

Boafo later introduced Binney and Koomson as her helpers, and they moved Ms. Addison from Ofaakor-Jei River to a rented apartment in Lamptey, a suburb of Adam Nana in Kasoa, where they continued their support until she gave birth at the Kasoa Polyclinic on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.

Following the birth, the suspects, alleging that the baby had an infection, presented another woman as a medical professional from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, who supposedly took the baby for treatment at the facility.

A few days later, the suspects told Ms. Addison that her baby had died; however, she disputed this claim and reported the situation to the police.

Police greenlight Minority’s second demo against BoG leadership

The Ghana Police Service has approved the Minority caucus in Parliament’s second protest, scheduled for July 30, aimed at demanding the removal of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, and his two deputies from office.

The approval follows productive discussions between the police and Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga. In a letter dated Wednesday, July 17, the police urged the organizers to ensure that the protest does not disturb public peace.

The NDC MPs argue that the governor, who they claim oversaw significant mismanagement at the Central Bank, should be replaced with a more competent individual. They point to a GH¢60.81 billion loss recorded by the Bank in the 2022 fiscal year and the allocation of over $250 million for constructing a new headquarters as evidence of poor management.

On October 3, 2023, members of the caucus organized a protest calling for the resignation of the governor and his deputies.

The protesters gathered at the Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and marched through several key locations, including Adabraka, Ridge Roundabout, and the High Court Complex Traffic Light, before ending at Independence Square. However, their attempt to present a petition to the governor was thwarted when he did not meet them personally, sending his head of security instead.

The initial protest was deemed unsuccessful, prompting the Minority caucus to plan a new protest date, which took nearly a year to finalize.

During this period, Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga filed a Right to Information Act (RTI) request to the BoG, seeking detailed information on the combined losses of approximately GH¢70 billion reported in BoG’s financial statements for 2022 and 2023, as well as the over GH¢250 million spent on the new head office and a clinic under construction.

The central bank stated that this information was available to the public.

Nahinso Chief determined to complete unauthorized road works amid arrest

The Chief of Nahinso, Nana Addo Boaman, was arrested by officials of the Asokwa Municipal Assembly for initiating road works without official permission.

The arrest, which occurred over the weekend, followed Nana Boaman’s attempts to address long-standing road issues in the area, which have caused significant flooding despite numerous appeals from residents and motorists.

Nana Boaman took it upon himself to fill pits and repair the road to alleviate the difficulties faced by the community. Residents of Nahinso, which borders the Bosomtwi District and Oforikrom Municipality, have for years decried the poor road conditions exacerbated by abandoned construction works after drains were built.

These pits, allegedly resulting from sand-winning activities, frequently cause flooding, making movement difficult and impacting nearby homes.

In an interview, Nana Boaman expressed his frustration with the authorities’ inaction.

His initiative to repair the road came after failed attempts to get authorities to address the problem.

However, the Asokwa Municipal Assembly officials halted the chief’s efforts, citing the lack of official permission. Nana Boaman was subsequently arrested by the Asokwa District Command police but was granted bail over the weekend.

The Assembly maintains that the chief did not follow the proper procedures before commencing the road works.

Despite his arrest and the threats he faces, Nana Boaman remains resolute.

  • More Ghanaians losing trust in Courts, Police, EC – Afrobarometer Reports

More Ghanaians losing trust in Courts, Police, EC – Afrobarometer Reports

The latest Afrobarometer survey has unveiled a stark decline in public trust in Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), courts, and police, painting a troubling picture for these pivotal institutions.

The data, spanning from 1999 to 2022, reveals a dramatic erosion of confidence that poses significant concerns for the country’s democratic process and rule of law.

Once a beacon of trust, the Electoral Commission has witnessed a precipitous drop in public confidence. In 1999, the EC enjoyed a commendable trust rating of 63%.

This figure surged to an impressive 75% in 2005. However, the latest data from 2022 shows that only 33% of Ghanaians now have faith in the EC. This sharp decline reflects growing public skepticism about the commission’s ability to conduct free and fair elections.

The courts have not been immune to this trend. In 1999, 58% of respondents expressed confidence in the judiciary, and this number rose slightly to 62% by 2005. Yet, by 2022, trust in the judicial system had plummeted to a mere 36%. This significant decline indicates a deepening distrust in the courts’ ability to deliver justice impartially and effectively.

The police force, often the most visible arm of law enforcement, has also experienced a severe drop in public trust. In 1999, trust in the police stood at 49%, climbing to 64% in 2005.

However, by 2022, only 28% of Ghanaians expressed confidence in the police. This decline persists despite the efforts of IGP George Akufo Dampare to enhance the police’s image and effectiveness.

    Historical Trust Levels

    • Electoral Commission (EC)
    • 1999: 63%
    • 2005: 75%
    • 2022: 33%

    The Courts

    • 1999: 58%
    • 2005: 62%
    • 2022: 36%

    The Police

    • 1999: 49%
    • 2005: 64%
    • 2022: 28%

The Afrobarometer data underscores an urgent need for reforms across these institutions. Restoring public trust will require significant efforts to increase transparency, accountability, and performance.

For the EC, ensuring transparent electoral processes and addressing public concerns head-on will be crucial. The judiciary must work towards greater impartiality and efficiency, while the police need to rebuild their relationship with the public through consistent and fair law enforcement.

Police in Western Region arrests 6 for burning 60-year-old to death

The Ahanta West Municipal Police Command in the Western Region has apprehended six individuals on suspicion of murdering 60-year-old Isaac Ansah.

Reports indicate that the victim was allegedly set on fire in Achonwa, a community where he had resided for more than two years.

The arrests came after a disturbing incident on Thursday, June 27, 2024, when a mob acted based on allegations made by a local fetish priest.

According to the priest, Ansah had purportedly provided the names of 14 community members for sacrificial killing.

Mr. Frank Eshun, Ansah’s nephew, informed the media that the suspects include prominent community figures such as Nana Ojandi, the Caretaker Chief, Godfred Cudjoe, the Assemblyman, the Fetish Priest, the Chief Fisherman, and two others.

Violence erupted following an unsuccessful meeting between Ansah and the village elders. Enraged youth from the community seized Ansah, bound him, pelted him with stones, and ultimately burned him alive using car tires and gasoline.

Eshun expressed the family’s devastation over the loss and called for justice.

He shared that the sight of animals scavenging on his uncle’s remains has deeply disturbed him.

Isaac Ansah’s body has been transferred to the morgue for an autopsy.

Despite their grief, the family hopes for a peaceful final resting place for their beloved relative.

Family alleges foul play in teen’s death in police custody

The family of 18-year-old Jagiri Mborilen suspects foul play in his death while in police custody in Chamba, within the Nanumba North Municipality of the Northern Region.

Jagiri’s elder brother, Ganiw Abass, shared that he visited Jagiri around 8 o’clock in the morning and assured him that the family was working on his bail. Later, he was shocked to receive a call informing him that his brother had committed suicide.

“It is strange that in just a matter of hours, someone who was okay had passed. I was called this afternoon after visiting my brother earlier this morning, only to be told he had committed suicide. I asked how he got the rope in the cells to commit suicide. He was sitting on the ground with the rope hanging around his neck,” Mr. Abass said.

When asked to convey the body, Mr. Abass informed the police that he was not the family head and could not make such a decision without consulting the family elders.

“I told them I am not the head of the family and cannot take any decision unless I inform the elders and the assemblyman, which I later did,” he explained.

The body was subsequently moved to Bimbilla for examination and then handed over to the family for burial. Mr. Abass insisted, “They sent the body to Bimbilla and later gave it to the family for burial, but I won’t agree. This matter has to be investigated.”

    Background

Jagiri Mborilen was accused of theft by a woman who allegedly consulted a soothsayer, who named Jagiri as the thief. Jagiri’s elder brother, Ganiw, was asked to bring him to the soothsayer’s shrine, which he did.

When the soothsayer accused Jagiri of the theft, he denied it, but the soothsayer insisted on his guilt.

The matter was then taken to the police station, where Jagiri was detained. The police later claimed that Jagiri had admitted to the theft, and the family was told they would need to repay the stolen money.

Mr. Abass stated that he had discussed repayment arrangements with the woman who accused Jagiri, suspecting that his brother might have been coerced into confessing at the police station. “We suspect they did something to him at the police station to force him to admit he stole the money, but we even agreed to pay the money,” he added.

After discussing bail arrangements with his brother, Mr. Abass was devastated to learn of Jagiri’s death. The body is currently with the family after being brought from Bimbilla by the police.

Two police inspectors slapped with a 5-year prison term over secessionist activities

Accra High Court has sentenced two Police Inspectors to a combined total of nine years in prison for their involvement with the Western Togo Restoration Front (WTRF), a secessionist and banned organization in Ghana.

Billy Akuaku, who financially supported another group called the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF), received a five-year prison sentence and a GH¢6,000 fine. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional five months in prison for Akuaku.

Gabriel Dorduno, also a financial contributor to the HSGF, was sentenced to four years in prison and fined GH¢3,600. If Dorduno did not pay the fine, he would serve an extra three months in prison.

His sentence was given in absentia.

These sentences were issued after Judge Mary Yanzuh found both men guilty at the conclusion of their trial. The charges included membership in banned organizations, namely the WTRF and HSGF, and making contributions to these groups.

Akuaku faced an additional charge for accepting financial contributions from members of the Homeland Study Group Foundation’s Jasikan Branch.

The court justified the harsh sentences, stating that as members of the security service, the defendants should have protected the Ghana Police Service and the country rather than leaking information.

The prosecution argued that based on intelligence gathered by the National Security Council, an operation was conducted to identify and arrest WTRF members.

These members had blocked the highway in Juapong and Sogakope and set fire to two STC vehicles on September 25, 2022.

The prosecution said that during investigations into the activities of the banned organization, the investigation team discovered a WhatsApp group platform with the “SEC ADMI”, a group created by high-ranking members of the organization to discuss security-related issues. .

In addition, the prosecution told the court that further investigation revealed that some members of the group were security personnel, including those charged here.

The prosecution said the now-convicted accused were also found to be members of the two WhatsApp platforms of the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF), namely “Psalm 21” and “HSGF”.

According to the prosecution, Akuaku was arrested on March 7, 2021, and taken to his residence in Adzogekope. During the search of his room, the investigation team discovered eight WTRF membership cards, one of which was issued in his name.

Additionally, they found a notebook containing financial records of members from the Jasikan branch of WTRF, along with a list of executive members titled “Upper Lake-Oti Provincial Executive Committee”.

On the same day, the investigation team proceeded to Dordonu’s residence, where they found a WTRF membership card, a notebook labeled “Funeral Contribution”, and a mobile phone.

Subsequently, the station officer informed Dordonu to appear before the Director of the Intelligence Unit at the CID headquarters. Dordonu complied on April 8, 2021, and was subsequently arrested.

During interrogation, Akuaku admitted to being a member of HSGF. In Dordonu’s case, he acknowledged ownership of the notebook found in his room but denied possession of the WTRF membership card.

The prosecution detailed that according to the notebook labeled “HSGF JAS BRANCH” found in Akuaku’s room, he had made monthly contributions of GH¢10 each for September and October to HSGF.

Furthermore, it was revealed that Akuaku had contributed GH¢150, while Dordonu had contributed GH¢100 to HSGF.

She then heard gunshots and had no idea of the whereabouts of the robber who nearly choked her to death. Mrs Amissah-Arthur noted that her first attempt to reach the Police was unsuccessful.

“I crawled, took my phone and called the police emergency number and there was no reply,” she said.

However, moments later she was able to reach the Tesano Police after reaching her doctor who ordered that she be taken to a health facility after those close to her realised her face and throat got swollen.

“He was wailing. Apparently, my face was one big mess. So he is seeing my face and screaming,” she said.

According to the widow, her doctor decides to call a few scan health facilities before they set off. She revealed that none of the health facilities that were contacted were ready to attend to her since their opening time was 8 a.m., despite it being about 4 a.m.

“So he calls a few hospitals and the response is ‘well, we won’t open the scan’s place until 8 a.m.. And this was around 4 a.m. So he says there is somebody who is dying. They said we work at 8 a.m.,” she said.

Fortunately, her doctor managed to secure a private health institution, and upon arrival, everyone kept staring at her due to how her face was disfigured.

The encounter between Matilda Amissah-Arthur and the robber

She explained how she complied with the intruder’s demands, yet still faced brutal violence.

Mrs. Amissah-Arthur revealed that the incident occurred while she was holding money intended for renovations at her mother’s house. “We were renovating our mother’s house so my siblings brought money, and the money was with me,” she recounted.

When the intruder demanded money, she quickly handed over $2,200 and 50 euros. “Quickly, I took the $2,200 dollars and gave him, and I had 50 euros of my own and I gave him,” she said. She also gave him all the cedis in her purse.

However, the robber was not satisfied with the amount. “Then he counted the money and said, ‘This small money.’”

“He got angry. He turned my room upside down, and of course, he didn’t find money or any jewelry. And then he said, ‘You wasted my time, so I will kill you. But I have to call my boss.’ By this time, he had dragged me from the bed and was hitting my head on the ground,” she continued.

In a chilling twist, the attacker spoke on the phone and received instructions to kill her.

“He spoke on the phone for a couple of minutes and said, ‘My boss says I should shoot you, but I won’t shoot you. I will strangle you so that you’ll die a slow death and next time you come, you’ll have money.’ So, he started strangling me.”

Amidst the ordeal, Mrs. Amissah-Arthur asked for water. In a bizarre act, the attacker fetched water from her fridge and allowed her to drink before resuming his attack.

“I got thirsty at some point, and I said, ‘I am thirsty.’ He stopped strangling me, went to my fridge for water, opened it, and put it in my mouth. Just when I started drinking, he snapped it, closed it, and continued strangling me.”

Hawa Koomson walked away free but you detained a woman whose name you misspelt – Mahama slams Police

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for what he characterized as acts of inequality and selective justice.

He pointed out the incident involving the current Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, who discharged a firearm at a voter registration center without facing any consequences, while Naa Koryoo was detained for legally possessing a firearm.

He accused the police of politically motivated and unfair selective enforcement of their discretionary arrest powers.

“The inequality and selective justice of this government are gullying, otherwise, how could Hawa Koomson, who fired a weapon at a registration centre and boasted about it, walk away free and a parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East is detained partly because the very police that issued her with a firearm’s license misspelt her name?” the former president said in a live broadcast on Sunday, June 9.

Despite these intimidation tactics, Mr. Mahama expressed confidence in Madam Okunor’s victory in the parliamentary race.

He claimed that the police have effectively secured the Awutu Senya East parliamentary seat for the party’s candidate, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, by arresting and detaining her in a bid to intimidate her.

“If the government was seeking to break the spirit of Naa Koryoo with that politically organised arrest, they have rather handed over the Awutu Senya East parliamentary seat to the young woman, who by all standards towers over and above the incumbent,” he said.

Police deny Asiedu Nketia’s claims of higher authority involvement in Ofaakor firearms arrests

The Ghana Police Service has refuted claims made by Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), suggesting that the arrest of three individuals for possession of firearms at Ofaakor in the Awutu Senya East Constituency was due to an “order from above.”

In a video circulating online, Mr. Asiedu Nketia alleged that the Accra Regional Police Commander, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), and the Inspector-General of Police had informed him that the arrests were directed by higher authorities.

The Police Service has categorically denied these assertions, stating that they are false and without any basis. According to the police, none of the officers mentioned in the video has ever made such a pronouncement.

The incident in question involved the discovery of a Pump Action gun with four rounds of ammunition in a vehicle at the Electoral Commission’s offices in Ofaakor.

The individuals involved were Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the NDC parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, along with Abdulai Aziz and Mustapha Mohammed. Naa Koryoo was cautioned for the unauthorized transfer of firearms, while Aziz and Mohammed were cautioned for possessing firearms without authority. All three have since been granted bail.

Naa Koryoo’s detention on June 7, 2024, sparked significant unrest among NDC supporters, who gathered at the Cantonments Police Station demanding her release.

The incident drew widespread condemnation, including from former President John Dramani Mahama and other NDC officials, who labeled the detention as politically motivated.

In addition to the firearms charges, Usman Haruna was arrested and remanded into custody in connection with the stabbing of the son of Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, during the disturbances at the Electoral Commission’s office. Haruna is scheduled to reappear in court on June 19, 2024.

The Police Service has emphasized that the arrests were a result of standard procedures and ongoing investigations, which are being conducted without external influence. The case docket has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney-General for review and advice, as part of the ongoing legal process.

The police have reiterated their commitment to impartiality and due process as they continue their investigations.

  • You have no reasonable cause to be detaining Naa Koryoo – Sammy Gyamfi to police

You have no reasonable cause to be detaining Naa Koryoo – Sammy Gyamfi to police

The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi has accused the Ghana Police Service and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of colluding to unlawfully determine their party’s parliamentary candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor.

She was re-arrested for a firearm found in her vehicle.

In a statement shared on social media on Saturday, June 8, 2024, the NDC communication officer alleged that Naa Koryoo is now detained due to a supposed inconsistency in her gun registration license.

“Comrades, it is very clear that the NPP-controlled Police Service has no reasonable or justifiable cause to be detaining the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

“The claim of a discrepancy in her first name is totally false,” Sammy Gyamfi wrote on X.

He refuted claims of a discrepancy in her first name and accused the NPP-controlled Police Service of unjustified detention.

“What then is Naa Koryoo’s crime? Is it now a crime to procure and register/license a gun in your name for personal protection? A gun she has not fired at anybody? What did the NPP-controlled police do in the case of Hawa Koomson, who actually fired a gun at a voter registration center?” he quizzed.

He added, “This same Hawa Koomson has threatened Naa Koryoo at gunpoint on four (4) different occasions, according to her lawyers. This is why she was compelled to buy and register a gun in her name for her protection.”
