Police arrest NDC’s Awutu Senya East PC after order from above

Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency in the Central Region, has been apprehended by the Police based on an order from above, according to sources.

The detention of Madam Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor was initially brought to light by the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi.

Mr. Gyamfi stated that the police have not provided any reason for her arrest and subsequent detention. In a social media post, he characterized the situation as an effort to silence the NDC.

Sammy Gyamfi explained, “Her offence is simply that a weapon (gun) was found in her car. The said weapon is registered in her name. All the necessary registration documents have been submitted to the Police.

“Unlike, Hawa Koomson who in 2020 actually fired a gun at a registration center, Naa Koryoo has not fired any gun or weapon. Yet, the …Police service is hell-bent on detaining her.”

Grassroot supporters of the NDC thronged the Cantonments Police Station in Accra where Naa Koryoo Okunor has been detained.

On Sunday, June 2, 2024, the Ghana Police Service announced that three individuals were arrested at Ofaakor for possessing a firearm without lawful authority. The suspects, including Ms. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, Mustapha Mohammed, and Abdul Aziz Musah, were apprehended while traveling in a Honda CRV with registration number GX-2044-19 near the Electoral Commission Office at Ofaakor. During the arrest, a pump-action gun with four rounds of ammunition was seized from the vehicle.

In an interview on Wednesday, June 5, Ms. Okunor clarified that she was invited by the police rather than formally arrested. She stressed that the firearm found in her car was legally licensed and explained that she obtained it for self-protection against the incumbent NPP MP and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson. Ms. Okunor claimed that the police had failed to protect her during previous altercations, where the MP allegedly attacked her and even fired gunshots.

“I have never been arrested. Yes, I was invited to the police station. I was not arrested. I was there because I had to go there.

“My driver was arrested, and my security guard was arrested because a licensed gun was found in my car…It was far away from the registration centre,” she said.

Prior to the arrest related to firearm possession, a clash between NDC and NPP supporters occurred at the EC’s office in Ofaakor during the ongoing votes transfer exercise.

This altercation resulted in the stabbing of Ato Koomson, son of the incumbent MP and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson, who was subsequently hospitalized. The suspect involved in the stabbing has also been arrested and detained.

It remains unclear whether the subsequent arrest of the NDC Parliamentary Candidate is connected to the stabbing incident or solely pertains to the firearm possession charge.

‘Can this Gen Z’s take advise?’- Kanayo O. Kanayo reacts to ‘murder’ of Ghanaian lady, friend

Veteran Nigerian actor and lawyer Anayo Modestus Onyekwere, known as Kanayo O. Kanayo, has responded to the alleged murder of a Ghanaian woman and her Nigerian friend in Abia State, Nigeria.

The victims, Celine Chidinma Ndidum and Ghanaian Afibah Tandoh, were in Aba, the capital of Abia State, to meet with a business partner. They were last seen in April, with reports indicating they were killed by the man they went to visit.

Andrew Amaechi Ochekwo, the alleged kidnapper, was shot and killed by police after attempting to escape while being transported to Abuja.

In a social media video, Kanayo O. Kanayo expressed concern over how easily young people today form friendships and travel to meet people they connect with online.

“With a heavy heart, I address the sad news from Aba. Can you really advise the Gen Z generation on friendships?” he questioned. He highlighted the positive aspects of social media but stressed the dangers of online friendships, recalling a similar case of a woman named Cynthia who vanished after traveling from Abuja to Lagos to meet her boyfriend.

“Now we have Celine and Afibah from Ghana. This is tragic. I don’t know what they call runs or hookups,” he stated, emphasizing that economic struggles cannot justify risking one’s life.

Kanayo, offering his perspective as a father and elder, advised young women to consider the risks of traveling to meet strangers. “Hard work is essential. The truth is bitter, but it must be acknowledged. Young girls doing small businesses deserve appreciation.”

He also warned those who prey on others, stating, “The law will catch up with you.”

Businessman accused of kidnapping two women shot dead by unknown individuals during transport

Businessman Andrew Amaechi Ochekwo accused of kidnapping two women, Celine Ndudim and Afiba Tandoh, in Nigeria, has reportedly been killed.

The incident occurred while he was being transported from Abuja by the police, and investigations are ongoing.

According to reports, Andrew was shot dead during an alleged escape attempt while in police custody.

Harrison, who has been monitoring developments at the police station, mentioned that the businessman had not disclosed the whereabouts of the missing women, adding complexity to the case.

“I traveled from Delta to Abuja with the victim and received threats. I learned that Andrew, the accused kidnapper, has been confirmed dead. He lived comfortably in police custody in Aba until a petition for case transfer to the IGP’s office was granted. Police from Abuja retrieved the case file and the suspect, but on their way back to Abuja, an incident occurred. The man tried to flee and was shot and killed by unidentified individuals. Now, we have lost the opportunity to gather information from him regarding Celine and Afiba’s current location,” Harrison stated in a post by Instablg9ja on X.

ACP for Volta North died in a hotel room while on official duty an not form pleasure – Report shows

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Antiri-Addo Nicholas Aletso, who was serving as the Volta North Regional Police Commander, tragically passed away in a hotel room where he was staying for official duties.

According to a report by the Chronicle Newspaper, investigations have dispelled social media rumors suggesting ACP Aletso was at the hotel for personal pleasure. Instead, he was there due to his official responsibilities.

At 58 years old, ACP Aletso had recently relocated to Hohoe to take on his new role as the Deputy Regional Police Commander for the newly established Volta North Region.

The region, created on December 1, 2022, faced a shortage of permanent accommodation for high-ranking officials.

As a result, the police administration arranged for ACP Aletso to stay in a local hotel temporarily, a common practice until suitable permanent housing can be found.

The circumstances of ACP Aletso’s death unfolded when his family, unable to reach him by phone, alerted the authorities.

On the morning of March 27, 2024, a police team led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Simon Yevu was dispatched to the hotel to investigate.

They found ACP Aletso’s room unlocked and discovered his lifeless body inside.

His body was taken to the Government Hospital in Hohoe, where medical personnel confirmed his death.

An autopsy was subsequently performed at the Police Hospital in Accra to determine the cause of death.

Before his transfer to Hohoe, ACP Aletso had served as the Divisional Commander of Police in Akropong in the Eastern Region.

He had been on leave to visit his family in the United Kingdom and had returned to Ghana, reporting for duty in Hohoe on March 25, 2024.

I am being forced by the Police to apologise to Serwaa – Henry Fitz alleges

Henry Fitz, who has garnered significant attention due to his romantic involvement with media personality Serwaa Amihere, has recently made serious allegations against the Ghana Police Service.

In a social media post, Henry claimed that both the Police and Serwaa are pressuring him to sign an apology statement, an agreement, and a withdrawal of factual statements he made regarding the lawsuit involving a leaked amorous video.

Earlier reports indicated that Serwaa Amihere’s pursuit of justice over her leaked private video encountered a setback when the Dansoman Circuit dismissed the case, citing a lack of jurisdiction to hear such matters.

With the court’s decision, the case involving Henry Fitz and other accused individuals is no longer under the jurisdiction of the Dansoman Circuit.

The Ghana Police must now take the case to a High Court, with the Attorney General’s Office responsible for the prosecution.

Henry stated that he is being forced to admit to falsehoods and is unwilling to comply.

He has threatened to release chats and recordings as evidence of the coercion by the police and Serwaa Amihere. Henry insists that he wants to be left alone.

Henry Fitz, who has been the talk of the town over his romantic relationship with media personality, Serwaa Amihere, has recently made stark allegations against the Ghana Police Service.

According to Henry in a post on social media, he is being coerced by the Police and Serwaa to append his signature to an apology statement, a statement of agreement and a withdrawal of factual writeups he made with regards to the lawsuit involving the leaked amorous video.

It was earlier reported that Serwaa Amihere‘s quest for justice over her leaked private video faced a setback as the Dansoman Circuit dismissed the case, citing lack of authority to hear such a case.

The court’s decision means that the accused individuals, including Henry Fitz, are not to be tried there.

The responsibility now shifts to the Ghana Police to pursue the case in a High Court, with the Attorney General’s Office handling prosecution.

And according to Henry, he is being compelled to admit things he knows are not true. He says he is unwilling to do so and has threatened to release chats and recordings that prove that he is being coerced by the police and Serwaa Amihere.

Nigerian Police arrest one amid search for missing Ghanaian and friend

Following a month-long search for missing Ghanaian women Afiba Abigail Tandoh and her friend Celine Chidinma Ndidum, significant developments have emerged pointing to suspect Andrew Amechi Otchipo, a 52-year-old British Nigerian with deep ties to Nigeria.

Otchipo, a reputedly notorious figure wanted by security agencies, was apprehended by Interpol in Nigeria to aid in investigations related to the disappearance of the two women.

Close Circuit Camera (CCTV) footage from the hotel where the trio last met revealed crucial evidence linking Otchipo to the missing women, including personal belongings such as handbags and ATM cards found in his residence.

Despite this breakthrough, authorities face challenges extracting information from Otchipo regarding the whereabouts of Afiba and Celine.

The Ghanaian government, deeply concerned about the welfare of its citizens, has instructed its consulate in Nigeria to intensify efforts to locate the missing individuals.

Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on the Nigerian Police Force to expedite the search for Afiba and Celine, whose sudden disappearance has raised alarms in both countries.

Police withdraw injunction application against #DumsorMustStop vigil

An Accra High Court has deemed moot an application for an injunction aimed at preventing the organizers of the #DumsorMustStop vigil from gathering at the Revolution Square, opposite the Jubilee House.

This decision followed information that the organizers had already changed their gathering point and route for the vigil, which was one of the reasons the police, in a motion filed on May 20, requested the court to halt the event entirely.

Earlier, the conveners had disagreed with the Greater Accra Regional Police Command on the starting point for their protest.

During a meeting at the Regional Police Headquarters on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, the Accra Regional Police Command expressed concerns to the organisers regarding the proposed venue, Revolution Square, due to its proximity to the Jubilee House, the seat of government, which is designated as a security zone.

The Command recommended relocating the protest to Independence Square and also expressed concerns about the proposed timing for the conclusion of the protest, set for midnight.

In court on Friday, May 24, the case was withdrawn to accommodate the new amendment to the venue, which is yet to be made public.

One of the conveners of the vigil, Selorm Dramani Dzramado, told the media that they have decided to amend the venue for the vigil in accordance with the Public Order Act.

He added that the court has yet to give the green light for the vigil and that “there is going to be a meeting with the police, so this thing [processes for the vigil] is going to start afresh.”

“We told the public why we chose the Revolution Square because it holds a certain historical significance and its proximity to the Presidency so the police insistence on us changing the venue, we complied with Article 41(i) of the Constitution which says that the citizens of Ghana must always cooperate with the lawful agencies in the maintenance of law and order to write a letter to the police to announce the change of venue and date,” he added.

VIDEO: “I am talking to my lawyer, what is this?” Hopeson Adorye clashes with a police officer

A video has surfaced showing Hopeson Adorye, a prominent figure in the Movement for Change and a former leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), arguing with a police officer as he was being prepared for transport from the Ministries’ Police Station on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

In the video, the police officer was attempting to get Adorye into a vehicle while he was speaking with his lawyer, Ken Korankye. Mr Adorye became increasingly frustrated with the officer’s persistence and snapped at him.

“I’m talking to my lawyer, please. I’m talking to my lawyer. What is this? I’m talking to my lawyer, and you are interrupting me. Please, let me speak with my lawyer. What is the meaning of this? Are you the only police officer?” a visibly angry Adorye shouted.

Despite his anger, Hopeson eventually entered the vehicle with the police officer, who was in plain clothes, as he continued to express his frustration.

Adorye, who was detained for his remarks about detonating dynamite to intimidate non-Ghanaians from voting in the Volta Region during the 2016 election, has been granted bail of GH₵20,000 with two sureties.

Court grants Hopeson Adorye GHC20K bail, charged with publication of false news

A member of the Movement for Change, Hopeson Adorye, has been granted bail following his arrest for admitting to detonating dynamite in the Volta Region during the 2016 elections to favor the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Dansoman District Court set Mr. Adorye’s bail at GH¢20,000 with two sureties, one of which must be justified.

Mr. Adorye was charged by the police with the publication of false news. Nana Ohene Ntow, a key member of the Movement for Change, provided this update in an interview with the media.

According to him, Mr. Adorye has been taken to the Ministries Police Station to complete the necessary procedures for his release from custody.

“He was put before the Dansoman District Court this [Thursday] morning and was charged with publication of false news. He has been granted bail and has been taken to the Ministries Police Station with our lawyers to secure his release,” Mr Ntow said.

The case has been adjourned to June 26, 2024. Hopeson Adorye was apprehended following his appearance on Accra FM on May 10, where he confessed to being part of a plot that detonated dynamite in the Volta Region to scare voters in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stronghold, thereby favoring the NPP.

“Prior to the elections, we blasted dynamite in parts of the Volta Region, and that scared a number of people. When I finished casting my ballot in Tema, I drove to the Volta Region, and when I asked for the number of people who had voted and the expected number of voters, it turned out people did not come out to vote.”

Meanwhile, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a former Member of Parliament for Adentan who has parted ways with the NPP and is now a member of the Movement for Change, has claimed that the arrest is politically motivated.

Following a visit by presidential aspirant and leader of the movement, Alan Kyerematen, Mr. Buaben Asamoa stated that the allegations against Hopeson Adorye are false and unjust.

“Hopeson Adorye is not about to run away from Ghana or his home because the police intend to charge him with the publication of false information. So to go to the extent of keeping him all day in the police station and bringing him over to the Ministries to detain him, you point fingers backwards at yourself that there is something political at play and it is not fair,” he said.

Kabale district police arrest 2 officers for alleged murder of local resident

The Kigezi regional police spokesperson, Mr. Elly Maate, has confirmed the arrests of Sgt. John Tumwesigye, in charge of Nyanja police post, and his subordinate, PC James Owomuhangi.

Preliminary investigations by the police suggest that the two officers, during an early morning patrol on Tuesday, shot and killed Chris Twinomujuni, a resident of Rujongoma village in Kaharo sub-county, Kabale District.

“While on an early morning patrol on Tuesday at Nyanja trading centre at around 3AM, the accused police officers encountered a group of individuals drinking alcohol and smoking bangi. A scuffle broke out, and Sgt Tumwesigye fired shots to disperse the crowd. A stray bullet hit Twinomujuni in the leg, causing him to bleed to death. The police apprehended three suspects, while others escaped,” Mr Maate said.

He clarified that the police officers and the suspected criminals were arrested to assist in investigating the case.

Ms Anah Twebaze and Jonan Kamuntu, both relatives to the deceased, asked the government to incur all burial expenses and later take care of the financial needs of the deceased’s family members.

“The deceased has been the sole breadwinner for his family and now that his life has been terminated by a government worker, the government should take care of all the financial needs of his wife and his two children,” they said.

The former LCIII chairman for Kaharo Sub County in Kabale District, Mr. Dustan Muhereza, described the deceased as a humble and hardworking resident who earned a respectable income from farming.

“I was surprised to learn that a police officer shot and killed the suspect yet he had other alternative means of handling the matter other than taking the law in his hands. It is my prayer that the accused police officer gets the punishment he deserves for the offence he committed,” he said.

Police arrest 2 Togolese for attempting to register at Buem voter registration centre

Two Togolese nationals are currently in the custody of the Jasikan Municipal Police Command for attempting to participate in Ghana’s ongoing voter registration exercise.

The arrests were made by National Security officers on Sunday, May 19, and the suspects were subsequently handed over to the police for further processing in court.

According to National Security officers, leaders of a political party in the area allegedly brought the suspects to the Jasikan Municipal Registration Centre. They further alleged that political leaders in the Buem Constituency attempted to secure bail for the two suspects at the police station but were unsuccessful.

This incident follows a similar arrest last week at Asokore Mampong in the Ashanti Region, where two Nigeriens were apprehended. These individuals were unable to convince Electoral Commission officers and the police of their eligibility to register as they were not Ghanaians.

In response, the Electoral Commission (EC) has issued a warning to political parties to discourage their regional and constituency executives from transporting minors and foreigners to registration centres.

Police break up pro-Palestinian camp at Chicago’s DePaul University

In Chicago, police initiated the removal of a pro-Palestinian camp from DePaul University on Thursday morning, in response to a directive from the school’s president that students would face arrest if they did not leave.

Police and workers wearing yellow vests removed tents and camping gear from the student camp, and there were yellow squares of dead or dying grass left behind. Front-loading machines were used to take out the camping gear.

Just opposite to where the camp was set up on the grassy area at DePaul’s campus called “The Quad,” a small group of protesters stood on the sidewalk in front of a gas station. They clapped their hands together while a leader spoke to them through a bullhorn.

Jon Hein, head of patrol for Chicago Police Department, said that all the protesters at the camp left the area on their own when the police came early Thursday.

“There were no fights and no one tried to stop us,” he said during a press conference. As we got closer, everyone chose to leave the place on their own.

Hein said that two young people, a man and a woman, were arrested outside the camp for blocking traffic.

The decision to empty the campus happened just a few days after the president of the school said that the safety of the public was in danger.

The university said on Saturday that they could not agree with the protestors, so it’s not clear what will happen to their camp on the Chicago campus. Most of DePaul’s graduation events will take place on the weekend of June 15-16.

DePaul’s President and Provost said they think students wanted to protest peacefully, but the way the protests were handled created safety problems for the community.

Manuel said in a statement sent on Thursday that they couldn’t resolve their differences with DePaul Divestment Coalition after 17 days of trying.

“Our public safety office and Chicago Police are now taking down the camp,” he said. “Everyone in the camp can leave without getting in trouble. ”

He said that since the camp started, the situation has been getting worse with fights and people who are not from our group making threats of violence.

Many college students across different campuses built camps to ask their schools to not be connected to Israel and the businesses that support it. They did this to show their opposition to Israel’s actions in the war with Hamas. The protests started as the schools were finishing their spring classes and are now having graduation ceremonies.

Some students and teachers were held by the police on Wednesday after they removed a camp and protesters supporting Palestine briefly took control of a lecture hall at the University of California, Irvine. The police came when protesters blocked the entrance to the building with a barrier and demanded the university stop investing in Israel. The police said that people were not allowed to gather, so they made them leave the building and arrested some of them.

There was a lot of tension at DePaul last weekend when people who disagreed with a protest showed up on campus in Lincoln Park. The police had to get involved.

The DePaul Divestment Coalition, made up of students, want the university to stop investing in Israel. They started camping out on April 30. The group said that university officials left the discussion and tried to make students sign an agreement. This was reported in a statement by a student on Saturday.

Henna Ayesh, a Palestinian student at DePaul and part of the Coalition, said she doesn’t want her tuition money to support her family’s pain.

DePaul is located in the northern part of the city. Police cleared out a camp at the University of Chicago last week.

The Associated Press found that there have been at least 77 times since April 18 when people were arrested at protests on college campuses across the US. A total of 2,900 people have been arrested at 58 different colleges and universities. The numbers are from information given by AP, universities, and law enforcement.

Protect PWDs participating in voter registration exercise – EC, Police told

The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) and the Ghana Police Service to prioritize the safety of persons with disabilities (PwDs) during the ongoing voter registration exercise.

The call comes in response to reported incidents of violence at some registration centers, particularly in Kukuom (Ahafo region), Cape Coast (Central region), and Adugyama (Ashanti region).

While acknowledging that the exercise has been generally peaceful nationwide, the GFD expressed concern that such incidents could intimidate PwDs and deter them from participating in the registration process.

“The news as reported by some media outlets, falls short of informing the public about the safety measures to assure persons with disabilities to participate in the process,” said the federation.

“The GFD wishes to call on the security agencies and the Electoral Commission to prioritise the safety of vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities at all times during the registration process,” the federation said in a statement signed and issued by its national president, Joseph Atsu Hormadzi.

“Persons with disabilities are deemed to be greatly affected in situations of emergencies and violence. The current atmosphere of violence at registration centres is a crucial factor that can lead to the disenfranchisement of persons with disabilities and other marginalised groups, thereby jeopardising their right to participate in the upcoming 2024 general election,” it said.

The federation said: “Ghana as a state party to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), particularly under Article 29, must guarantee the safety and equal rights of persons with disabilities to access political opportunities devoid of obstacles.”

“It needs to be emphasised that inclusion is not just a fundamental human right, but also essential for the sustainable development of Ghana under the principle of “Leaving No One Behind,” it stressed.

The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) strongly condemned the recent violence reported at several voter registration centers, expressing deep concern about its impact on persons with disabilities (PwDs) who have consistently faced barriers to their political participation.

The GFD emphasized that political violence has been a significant deterrent for PwDs, hindering their ability to exercise their right to vote. The federation highlighted the urgent need for intervention to ensure that PwDs are not excluded from the electoral process, as this would violate their fundamental human rights.

Calling on all stakeholders, including political party leaders, the GFD urged for immediate action to create a safe and secure environment for PwDs at registration centers. The federation emphasized that political promises of inclusion are meaningless without tangible efforts to protect PwDs’ lives and ensure their full participation.

The GFD reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights and inclusion of PwDs in all aspects of society, urging collaborative efforts from all stakeholders to uphold the rights of every citizen, including persons with disabilities.

”We no go sit down” for disgruntled police officers to get rid of Dampare – Owula Mangortey warns

Social commentator, Owula Ayittey Mangotey, has affirmed his readiness to oppose by certain individuals in the police Service who are working effortlessly to oust the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare.

In a written letter to some leaders of the security cluster regarding issues to do with promotions in the Ghana Police Service, Mr. Owula Ayittey Mangotey stated that “The people of the Upper East Region, for example, feel the heat of cross-border criminal activities, armed robbery, and chieftaincy/land conflicts. We need to encourage the IGP and our Regional Commander, ACP Adofiem, to continue to protect us with their good policing methods. If a few disgruntled Police Officers want to get rid of the IGP, they must know that “we no go sit down for that to happen. Walahi!!”

    Read his full writeup below:

Where is it written in the Police Service Regulation, 2012 C.I. 76 that a Police Officer gets an automatic promotion to the next rank after serving four years or more?

(1). What at all is wrong with some senior Police officers? Is the Ghana Police Service gradually turning into a labyrinth of danger to National Stability and Security?

(2). Some senior Police Officers are fighting their own shadows and their IGP over promotions, and they are shamelessly and shamefully exposing their ignorance, wickedness, and chicanery for public consumption. Is it now a reckless stage of ALL-DIE-BE-DIE in the Ghana Police Service?

(3). Did you read the article from a Police Human Rights Lawyer? Did you note the stated litany of grievances of some senior Police Officers over their promotions in the Ghana Police Service?

(4). The Human Rights Lawyer’s wrote an article titled, “THE ISSUES OF THOSE WHO ARE DUE FOR PROMOTIONS AND SPECIAL RECOMMENDATION OF SENIOR OFFICERS MATTER CHOP HOT AFTER TWO(2) TIMES SITTING OF THE POLICE COUNCIL. WHAT EVERY POLICE OFFICER MUST KNOW.”

(5). The Police Service Human Rights Advocate sought to educate senior Police Officers and the general public on the methodology for promotions in the Police Service by quoting from Police Service Regulations, 2012 (C.I. 76) and Service Instructions (S.1.) to buttress his point that IGP Akufo-Dampare has been acting capriciously to fast-track promotions for some Officers and stopping the promotion of others, because he has problems with them.

(6). The Police Human Rights Lawyer exposed his intentions when he opined that, “IGP Dr. Dampare continues to destroy the Ghana Police and it is about time he is given the marching orders…”

(7). Over to you President Akufo Addo, who is the appointing authority of the IGP as stated in section 7(1) of the Police Service Regulation, 2012 (C.I.76): “In accordance with article 202(3) of the 1992 Constitution, the power to appoint a person to hold or act in the Service shall vest in the President acting in accordance with advice of the Council.”

(8). Is the Police Human Rights Lawyer publicly making a political campaign statement that President Akufo-Addo acted on bad advice from Dr Bawumia’s Police Council to appoint Dr. Dampare who is destroying the Police Service? Is the Police Human Rights Lawyer publicly making a political campaign statement that Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and NPP 2024 Flagbearer is chairman of a Police Council superintending the work of the IGP, who destroying the Ghana Police?

(9). Is the Police Human Rights Lawyer publicly sticking his political fingers into the eyes of President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Bawumia, Ministers Kan Dapaah, and Henry Quartey to give the IGP the marching orders, in the same manner that partisan politicians are telling the electorate to give the AkufoAddo/Bawumia NPP government the marching orders on December 7, 2024?

    Saaa?!

(10). It is good to note how the alleged grievances of some senior Police Officers have been craftily manipulated by a Police Human Rights Lawyer into a fantastic, powerful political statement!

WE WILL SURELY CAMPAIGN WITH THIS POWERFUL POLITICAL STATEMENT FROM THE SENIOR POLICE OFFICERS!!

(11). I have read Regulation 37 of the Police Service Regulation, 2012 (C.I.76), and I wish the Police Human Rights Lawyer will point out where it is written that A POLICE OFFICER UPON SERVING THE AVERAGE OF 4 YEARS OR MORE IS ENTITLED TO AUTOMATIC PROMOTION TO THE NEXT RANK.

(12). I challenge the aggrieved senior Police Officers to point out how their argument over promotions is born out of C.I. 76.

(13). Are the senior Police Officers stating publicly that IGP Akufo-Dampare and the Police Management Board do not adhere to the mode of selections and recommendations for promotions in the Service as established by Regulation 31 (1), which reads: “For the purpose of promotions, there is established Assessment Committees at the national and regional levels to make appropriate recommendations for the consideration of the Police Appointments and Promotions Board and the Police Council.”

(14). Is it not shameful to note that senior Police Officers don’t know how to get their internal grievances settled?! Did they put their grievances in the public domain and expecting the court of public opinion to sway President Akufo-Addo to promote wholesale the aggrieved senior Police Officers?

(15). Is it not a shame that senior Police officers could state publicly that they are powerless against IGP AKUFO-DAMPARE?! The senior Police Officers do not know how to send a petition for redress to the Vice President and Chairman of the Police Council, Hon. Ken Agyepong’s Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior, CHRAJ, etc.?

(16). Look! Dr. Dampare is our IGP! He is a very good IGP for those of us living and working in the Northern Axis. I am a Bawku-based security correspondent for Ghananewsonline.com. From November 2021 to December 2023, I witnessed, monitored, and reported on the extraordinary efforts put in by IGP AKUFO-DAMPARE and his Commanders to maintain order and stability in the Bawku general area.

(17). Additionally, I monitored and reported on policing in some communities in the Upper East, Upper West, Savannah, North East, Northern, Ashanti South, and Central East Regions.

(18). As a citizen, I am through this article exercising my right to clap back and push back at those in the Police Service who are moving hell to get the IGP AKUFO-DAMPARE sacked to satisfy their parochial interests.

(19). Some senior Police Officers may love to hate or hate to love IGP AKUFO-DAMPARE. They must know that there are decerning citizens willing to stand by IGP AKUFO-DAMPARE till the resurrection, because they experience his good policing methods in Bawku and other communities, especially in the 5 regions of the Northern Axis.

(20). The people of the Upper East Region, for example, feel the heat of cross-border criminal activities, armed robbery, and chieftaincy/land conflicts. We need to encourage the IGP and our Regional Commander, ACP Adofiem, to continue to protect us with their good policing methods. If a few disgruntled Police Officers want to get rid of the IGP, they must know that “we no go sit down for that to happen. Walahi!!”

(21). Will our senior Police Officers allow IGP AKUFO-DAMPARE to serve his term and wait for their turn after the IGP’s Constitutional discharge from office or resignation?

    I shall return.

  • Court remands 5 for alleged murder of 2 police officers at East Trasacco

Court remands 5 for alleged murder of 2 police officers at East Trasacco

The Achimota District Court has remanded five suspects arrested by police for their alleged involvement in the murder of two off-duty police officers at Block Factory, a suburb of East Trasacco in Accra.

The deceased police officers, Lance Corporal Tasiga Ngapun aka Isaac and Constable Benjamin Tindam, were sitting in front of their home when the tragic incident occurred.

The accused are Mohammed Alhassan, a 46-year-old public servant, Ginkor Abdulai Alhassan, a 54-year-old foreman, Alex Apoh, a 36-year-old gardener, Bright Nana Kwame Owusu, a 27-year-old factory worker, and Ganu Iddirsu, a 25-year-old footballer. They have been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, namely murder, and two counts of murder.

Presided over by Mr. Prince Osei Owusu, the court did not take their pleas. The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Margaret Ofori Boadi, requested that they be remanded in lawful custody to prevent interference with police investigations. The prosecution argued that due to the seriousness of the crime and potential punishment, the accused might not appear for trial if granted bail.

Noble Adedawonu, the defence counsel, requested bail for his clients, stating that the charge sheet did not accurately reflect the facts. He assured the court that his clients were prepared to stand trial and prove their innocence if granted bail.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the court adjourned the matter to May 20, 2024. The prosecution alleged that on May 2, 2024, the accused conspired with others to murder the two officers at their private residence. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

  • Lady was set up to assassinate her Boston police officer boyfriend – Attorneys

Lady was set up to assassinate her Boston police officer boyfriend – Attorneys

Last week in Massachusetts, a trial started for a woman who is accused of hitting her Boston police officer boyfriend with her car and leaving him in a snowbank to die.

John O’Keefe passed away in Canton, a town near Boston, on January. The date is February 29, 2022.

The case is getting a lot of attention across the country because the defence says that police and authorities wrongly accused Karen Read and let the true killer go.

For the last few days, Read’s lawyers have been talking a lot about how the police are connected to the family who owned the house in Canton, Boston where O’Keefe’s body was found. They are saying that these relationships made the investigation unfair and made it hard for the police to consider the idea that someone else might have killed O’Keefe.

The lawyers first questioned Katie McLaughlin, a firefighter who came to the place and was friends with Caitlin Albert’s family member. Albert’s father, who was a police officer in Boston, owned the house at that time.

McLaughlin said on Friday that she and Caitlin Albert went to the same high school, were friends on social media, and took a picture together at a beach ten years ago. She said they were just people she knew a little, and she didn’t know it was Albert’s house when she went there. She also said she hadn’t spoken to Albert in a long time.

Alan Jackson, the lawyer for Read, kept trying to prove that Read and McLaughlin were closer than McLaughlin wanted to say, by showing other beach pictures of them together.

By Monday, he and other lawyers were strongly emphasizing that connection.

Before the group of people making decisions arrived, the lawyers told Judge Beverly Cannone that they had gotten a lot more pictures over the weekend of McLaughlin and Caitlin Albert together, including at a party for a soon-to-be baby. They also found out that both of them were on the running team in high school. Cannone said she will deal with the problem later.

The lawyers defending the case also asked questions to Canton Police Lieutenant. Paul Gallagher was the first person to speak on Monday. He was asked why he didn’t look for any physical evidence in the family home. They saw pieces of a broken glass outside the house and think they might find more inside if they search.

Jackson asked Gallagher if the police didn’t search the house because it belonged to a police officer from Boston.

Gallagher said that the police did not have enough evidence to do a search.

Jackson asked Gallagher if Chief Berkowitz stepped back from the investigation because of the connection between the Albert family and the Canton police department.

Gallagher said no because Brian Albert’s brother works in the Canton police’s investigative unit.

On Tuesday, the defense talked about the connection between Canton Police Lt. Michael Lank was friends with Christopher Albert, who is the brother of Brian Albert, and they were classmates in high school.

Lank said he was drinking when Christopher Albert came to him for help because he had gotten into a fight and was threatened.

Lank’s lawyers said he helped Albert because they’re good friends, but he said that’s not true.

“I helped a scared person, Chris Albert, and his family on that night,” he said in court.

The charges: A tumultuous relationship turns deadly

Police said that Read and O’Keefe went to two bars on the night the officer died, and then they were on their way to a party in nearby Canton. Read didn’t feel good and chose not to go, they said. When they were at home, O’Keefe got out of Read’s car. While she was turning the car around, she hit him and then drove off. according to prosecutors.

Read got very worried when she couldn’t contact O’Keefe. She went back to the party and, with two friends, found his body under the snow, according to the prosecutors.

Up to now, they are focusing on what Read said at the scene, including what first responders remember her saying loudly and many times, that she “hit him,” but she never mentioned using her SUV. They also have brought people to court who said the couple didn’t get along well.

However, a person who was at a bar with the couple on the night O’Keefe died, said that he did not see any signs of them fighting or arguing that night.

“I actually saw the opposite,” said Nicholas Kolokithas, who lives in Canton and is a lawyer, to the court. “They were very loving and affectionate with each other. My wife even noticed and asked why we couldn’t be like that. “

  • 33 people arrested at D.C. campus as police clear pro-Palestinian protest camp

33 people arrested at D.C. campus as police clear pro-Palestinian protest camp

The police used pepper spray to remove a camp of people supporting Palestine at George Washington University. They also arrested many protesters on Wednesday. This happened just as city officials were going to talk to Congress about how they handled the protest.

The hearing by the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability was canceled after the crackdown. The chairman and other Republicans were happy with the police action. House Speaker Mike Johnson said that we shouldn’t have to threaten to drag DC’s mayor before Congress in order to keep Jewish students at George Washington University safe.

Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, said she and Police Chief Pamela Smith decided to remove the camp because they received new information about more dangers. “The mayor said that we always consider public safety and act responsibly in response to protests. ”

Smith said the protest was getting more dangerous and less steady. He said that protesters had made weapons and were looking at university buildings to possibly take them over. This was said by Jeffery Carroll, who works for the police department. Bowser and Smith were asked to speak to the panel in the afternoon, but then the hearing was canceled.

Tensions have increased at protests against the Israel-Hamas war at universities in the United States and Europe. Some colleges acted quickly and strictly. Others have accepted the protests. Some people are getting impatient and asking the police to help with problems that are making campus life and safety difficult.

On Tuesday night, the police went to the University of Massachusetts to end a camp that was set up there. A video showed police in Amherst spending hours taking down tents and arresting protesters. The surgery went on until Wednesday morning.

The police arrested around 130 people on Tuesday night because they didn’t listen when they were told to leave.

The police in DC said they broke up the protest at George Washington because it was getting more and more intense. They arrested 33 people, some for attacking a police officer and for entering unlawfully. They admitted to using pepper spray on protesters outside the camp who were trying to get past the police.

George Washington said that if the camp on University Yard keeps going, there might be suspensions. People holding signs that said “Free Palestine” and “Hands off Rafah” walked to the home of the school President Ellen Granberg on Tuesday night.

The school said that they support students’ rights to express themselves freely, but the camp had become illegal and broke many rules.

Since April 18, more than 2,600 people have been arrested at 50 different colleges. This information is based on reports from the Associated Press and statements from the universities and police after a protest against war started at Columbia University in New York.

Police in riot gear removed a tent camp supporting Palestine at the University of Chicago after the school decided the protesters were causing safety issues. Many protesters had come together for eight days, but on Friday the administrators warned them to leave or be removed.

Chicago police officers then took a barrier that was put up to keep protesters away from the main area and moved it closer to the protesters. Some of the protesters were chanting “Up, up with liberation. ” “End the occupation. ” shouted the protesters and police were trying to control the situation by pushing back and forth at the barricade.

“The university is a place where people can share different opinions, but we can’t let one group overpower and disrupt the community for everyone else,” said Paul Alivisatos, the president of University of Chicago.

Other schools are allowing protestors to have gatherings and set up their camps how they want.

The president of Wesleyan University, a school in Connecticut, supports the on-campus protest, which includes a tent camp supporting Palestine, as a way for students to express their political opinions. The camp has more than 100 tents now, which is a lot more than the 20 tents it had a week ago.

“The protesters are bringing attention to the killing of innocent people, which is an important cause,” said university President Michael Roth to the campus community. “We will let them keep doing that, as long as it doesn’t cause problems on campus. ”

The president of the Rhode Island School of Design, Crystal Williams, talked with protesters for over five hours about their requests after students began occupying a building on Monday.

On Tuesday, the school said it will move classes to a different place because the building had posters saying “Free Palestine” and “Let Gaza Live. ”

Some colleges have used different approaches, from trying to make peace to threatening students with punishment, in order to have their graduation ceremonies.

In Amherst, UMass police arrested 109 people and are still deciding on charges for about 25 others. School Chancellor Javier Reyes said he ordered the cleaning because they couldn’t agree to take down the encampment and talk things out.

A week ago, the George Washington encampment had a visit from some Republican members of the House oversight panel. They were upset about the protests and didn’t like that Bowser didn’t send in police.

Bowser said on Monday that the city and police department said no to the university’s request for help. “We didn’t have any violence on the GW campus to stop,” she said at that time.

However, early Wednesday morning, many police officers from the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene, as reported by The GW Hatchet, which is the newspaper for the university’s students.

At least two police officers used pepper spray on protesters. The protesters then made a makeshift medical area at a market near the campus. The event planners quickly went to a store to get water to wash their eyes.

  • 64 individuals detained by Ontario Provincial Police over child sex abuse

64 individuals detained by Ontario Provincial Police over child sex abuse

The police in Ontario have caught 64 people who are accused of hurting children. They have a total of 348 charges against them. The investigations covered the whole province.

The police announced the arrests at a press conference in Scarborough on Wednesday morning. They were sharing more information about a major investigation called Project Aquatic.

The police started the case in February 2024. It involved 129 different investigations from all over Ontario about online sexual abuse material.

Det.-Sgt. Tim Brown said on Wednesday that 34 children were found as part of the investigation. The police said that because of Project Aquatic, 30 more children were kept safe. Brown explained that means taking children out of a dangerous situation where they could be harmed.

The police took more than 600 electronic devices as part of their investigation.

“People of all ages, from teenagers to old people, were arrested,” said Brown. “We find people who break the law in the whole province, from all different backgrounds and ages. ”

The police say that in one instance, a person arranged to meet with undercover investigators because they wanted to meet a child for a sexual reason. The police said another person had about 21 terabytes of data with pictures and videos of children being abused.

Toronto police said to CP24 that 13 people were arrested in the city and together they are facing 69 criminal charges.

Most of the investigation was done when investigators responded to complaints from electronic service providers, Brown said.

“We are working very hard to keep putting pressure on anyone who tries to hurt our children,” Brown said to the media. These dangers are not only found in hidden parts of the internet. Predators follow children.

Signy Arnason, who works at the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, said that Cybertip. ca, the tipline for reporting online child sexual abuse and exploitation in Canada, gets 2,000 to 3,000 tips every month.

“In our work, we have seen more and more adults who are interested in children in a bad way. ” “These online groups share and promote sexually abusive content involving children, and they even give each other advice on how to do it,” she said.

“They make it seem like it’s okay to sexually abuse and use children. ” In these communities, some people are very focused on certain victims, they try to find them and even follow them when they grow up. The dark web and AI generated images make the problem worse.

Arnason said that in Canada, there has been a huge increase in the number of reports about images made by artificial intelligence in recent years.

“That equation has two sides. ” Some people are trying to use technology to make fake images of child sexual abuse. She said it’s a nightmare for the victims to see new abusive images of themselves.

Young people are using AI generators to create nude images of kids at school and think it’s funny. That problem has become very big and now schools all over the country are facing it suddenly. We know it’s very upsetting and harmful to young people especially.

She said that the government needs to do more to handle the situation, like making new rules.

“We know that the police in Canada are overwhelmed and do not have enough resources. ” Many phone lines in different countries. “We are getting a lot of reports about child sexual abuse and online sexual violence towards young people,” she said.

This problem needs many different groups to work together, like police, governments, websites, teachers, parents, and organizations like ours. We all need to work together to fight it. It’s not enough yet.

She said that tech companies need to do more to keep children safe.

We need to protect children online the same way we protect them in real life. “Companies that make technology have too much power and only care about making money, even if it hurts kids. We can’t rely on them to keep kids safe on their own anymore,” she said.

“Stopping people from uploading bad pictures, quickly removing them, and making sure people are trained to do the right thing are all very important in protecting kids from being hurt on the internet. “

25,000 police officers must be recruited if 24-hour economy policy is implemented – Former CID Boss

Former Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr. Bright Oduro (rtd), has noted that the Police will need to recruit 25,000 personnel to effectively manage the proposed 24-hour economy in Ghana.

The idea for the 24-hour economy has been put forward by former President John Dramani Mahama, who sees it as a potential solution to various challenges in the country, including the issue of unemployment, which has become increasingly concerning.

Mr. Oduro emphasized the importance of enhancing the Police force’s staff strength to accommodate the demands of such a policy if it is implemented.

“It will require massive recruitment effort that will potentially bring the police population ratio which is now about one policeman to 800 citizens to 1 to 500 citizens or even better. An additional massive recruitment of 25,000 will be needed to top up the present police strength of about 42,000 and to make up the UN minimum ratio of 1 to 500,” he said.

A truck driver is accused of causing the death of a police officer during a traffic stop on a Utah highway on Sunday. He allegedly hit the officer with his truck.

A police officer and a highway patrol officer stopped a big truck at 6:30 am because someone called 911 to say they saw a person standing on the back of the truck as it was driving north on Interstate 15.

The police in Spanish Fork said that a man drove away while they were trying to stop him. Then he turned the big truck around and drove the wrong way on the highway. The big truck hit two police cars and the Santaquin officer died at the scene.

The police found out that the truck driver’s name is Michael Aaron Jayne and he is 41 years old. Police said that he has not been put into jail yet and he does not have a lawyer to speak for him.

The name of the officer who died has not been made public by the authorities.

“Our whole team is injured. ” “The officer’s family is upset because of a pointless act by one person,” said Spanish Fork police Lt Cory Slaymaker at a news conference.

The stop happened on the I-15 in Santaquin, a town with around 14,000 people, 65 miles (105 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City.

Officials say that Jayne ran away and took cars, including a pickup truck. He was caught by the police on Sunday after a brief chase in the Vernal area, about 160 miles east of Santaquin.

Slaymaker said they were still investigating who was riding on the back of the semitrailer and why.

  • Student slain by police outside Wisconsin school

Student slain by police outside Wisconsin school

The police in Wisconsin shot and killed a student outside a middle school because they got a report that someone had a weapon. The state’s attorney general gave the first law enforcement briefing on the gunshots, which made children run away and caused local schools to be locked down for hours.

Officials in Mount Horeb had said earlier that a person with a gun was stopped outside the school and did not get inside. The State Attorney General, Josh Kaul, said in a meeting on Wednesday night that no one else was hurt and that they are still looking into the situation.

“This happened outside. ” He never got inside, he said.

Officials at the meeting said the student is a young boy, but they didn’t say how old he is or which school in Mount Horeb he goes to.

Kaul didn’t answer some questions about what happened after the police came, like if the student had a gun, what kind of gun it was, and if he tried to get into the school.

The police in Mount Horeb said that several officers fired their guns, but they didn’t say how many officers did. The officers were wearing body cameras.

The police stayed at the place where the incident happened for a long time. Students were kept inside the buildings for a while and then slowly allowed to go home to their families.

The scared children and their parents were very scared during the first event and while waiting to be together again. Parents said their kids were hiding in closets, scared to use their phones, and a middle schooler said his class ran out of the gym on roller skates.

The district used Facebook posts all day to give updates. The first update was at 11:30 am and said that all district schools were on lockdown. Officials in Mount Horeb said that someone who is accused of attacking someone else was hurt, and people saw and heard a lot of kids running away. They did not say how it happened.

School buses were still waiting outside the middle school for more than four hours. The middle school, the nearby high school, and the playing fields between them were surrounded by police tape.

“A search of the middle school didn’t find any more people who might be involved,” a message posted around noon stated. “Most importantly, no one was hurt except for the person who is accused of attacking others. ”

Before, the district said “the danger has been stopped outside the building” but didn’t explain what had happened at the school in Mount Horeb, which is 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of the state capital of Madison.

Jeanne Keller said she heard five gunshots while in her shop The Quilting Jeanne, which is close to the middle school campus.

“It sounded like pow-pow-pow-pow,” Keller said on the phone with The Associated Press. “I thought I heard fireworks. ” I went outside and saw the kids running around. I think I saw about 200 kids.

A student in middle school said that his class was in the gym practicing in-line skating when they heard gunshots.

Max Kelly, who is 12 years old, said that his teacher told the whole class to leave the school. He said they skated to a street, left their skates and ran to a nearby store and gas station and hid in a bathroom.

Kelly met his parents and sat on a hill with them on Wednesday afternoon. They were waiting for Kelly’s younger siblings to come out of their schools. He had socks on, but no shoes.

“I don’t think there’s anywhere that is safe anymore,” said his mother, 32-year-old Alison Kelly.

Mount Horeb police said they couldn’t give information right away after the incident. The Dane County Sheriff’s office told journalists to go to a specific area, but didn’t give any new information.

Worried parents waited at the bus station for their children for a long time. Kaul said police were worried about the possibility of a ongoing danger, but he didn’t give more information. He said that the investigators wanted to talk to the students as soon as they were with their parents. They didn’t want to wait for several days to have these conversations.

Shannon Hurd, 44, and her ex-husband, Nathian Hurd, 39, were in a car waiting for their 13-year-old son, Noah, who was still at the middle school which was on lockdown.

Shannon Hurd said she found out what happened when Noah texted her that he loved her. She said she almost tripped on the stairs at her job while rushing to get to the school.

“I only want my child,” she said. “They should be protected at school. ”

Stacy Smith, who is 42 years old, was at the bank on Wednesday when she saw police cars drive by. Then she got a text from the school district warning about a shooter.

At first, she couldn’t find her two kids – Abbi in junior high and Cole in seventh grade. At last, she got through to Abbi on the phone. Abbi said in a quiet voice that she was hiding in a closet and couldn’t talk. In the end, she found the children and learned that they were fine.

“She said she can’t believe it, but it’s not here. ” “You hear it all over, but not here. ”

Schools across the country are trying to find ways to stop mass shootings from happening inside their buildings. They are doing this by using things like better security, practicing what to do if there is a shooter, and using technology like digital maps to help keep students safe. Many people also depend on teachers and school leaders to find problems with students’ mental health early.

The school district’s leader, Steve Salerno, said that if the security upgrades hadn’t been made, the situation could have been much worse. He also mentioned that students told staff about seeing someone outside the building, but didn’t give any more details.

“It’s something you just have to go through. “

  • Ejisu By-Election: Police to initiate criminal investigation into ‘white envelope’ bribery allegation – EC

Ejisu By-Election: Police to initiate criminal investigation into ‘white envelope’ bribery allegation – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has initiated preliminary discussions with the Police Service and requested the commencement of criminal investigations into the alleged bribery attempt of election officials during Tuesday’s by-election in Ejisu, Ashanti region.

A video surfaced on Tuesday afternoon showing the New Patriotic Party MP for Kwadaso, Prof Kingsley Nyarko, offering two election officers a white envelope, which he claims contained cash as a gesture of goodwill.

The video has sparked widespread speculation and accusations of attempted bribery, although Prof Kingsley Nyarko has refuted the allegations, stating that he could not have engaged in bribery openly.

In an update, the EC statement identified the two electoral officers stationed at the Fumesua Pentecost Church Polling Station with Polling Station Code F311503 as “Temporary Election Officials of the Electoral Commission recruited to conduct the Ejisu By-Election. They are Regina Serwaa, Ballot Issuer and George Sasu, Presiding Officer.”

  • Numerous deaths in US show dangers of giving sedative injections to those police arrest

Numerous deaths in US show dangers of giving sedative injections to those police arrest

Demetrio Jackson really needed medical help and the paramedics came to assist him.

The 43-year-old man was caught by the police and arrested for trespassing in a parking lot in Wisconsin. The police used a Taser on him and held him down while he begged for help because he couldn’t breathe. Now he sat on the ground with his hands tied behind his back and breathed in air through a mask.

Next, the police moved Jackson onto his side so that a medic could give him a strong drug to make him fall asleep.

“A police officer told Jackson that it will help him relax. ” In just a few minutes, Jackson’s heart stopped beating. He never woke up and died two weeks after.

Jackson died in 2021 because of something not many people know about – sometimes, instead of shooting, the police use a medical syringe to cause harm.

For the past 15 years, police have been giving calming drugs to people they detain. The drugs are based on uncertain science and are supported by experts who are aligned with the police. This is happening all over the country. The investigation looked at lots of police and medical records and videos of many incidents. It found that a plan to stop violence and save lives has led to some deaths that could have been prevented.

Between 2012 and 2021, at least 94 people died after being given medicine to make them sleepy and held down by police. This information was found by the AP working with FRONTLINE (PBS) and the Howard Centers for Investigative Journalism. This is almost 10% of the over 1,000 deaths found during the investigation of people controlled by police in ways that are not supposed to cause death. Almost half of the 94 people who died were Black, including Jackson.

Racial inequality is tied to a debated medical condition called excited delirium, which led to an increase in sedation outside of hospitals. Critics say the symptoms of “superhuman strength” and high pain tolerance play into racist ideas about Black people. This can lead to unfair decisions about who needs sedation.

In half of these cases, the use of sedatives was not mentioned in reports. Reports usually pay more attention to what the police did, not what the medics did. Elijah McClain died in Aurora, Colorado in 2019. Two paramedics were found guilty of giving him too much ketamine, the same drug that was given to Jackson. One person was sent to jail for five years last month, and the other person will find out their punishment on Friday.

It was difficult to figure out how much sedatives might have affected the 94 deaths. Many of these deaths involved using other harmful force on people who had taken drugs or drank alcohol. Doctors said to the AP that the vaccines might not make much of a difference for people who were already very sick. They could make things worse for people who were already in bad shape, or if they were given in the wrong way.

Sedatives were listed as a cause of death in twelve cases, but officials didn’t check if the injections were necessary. Doctors usually think these treatments are not harmful. Now, some people believe that they might be doing a more important job than we thought before and need to be looked at more closely.

Repeatedly, the AP discovered that upset people who were being restrained by the police facedown, sometimes with handcuffs and officers pushing on their backs, had trouble breathing and tried to escape. The paramedics gave medicine to calm down the aggressive person, which made them breathe even slower. Many times, the heart and breathing stopped within a few minutes.

Paramedics gave medication to some people who weren’t a danger to themselves or others, which goes against the rules for treating them. Doctors sometimes do not know if other drugs or alcohol are in people’s bodies, but mixing them can cause serious problems.

Sometimes police officers wrongly told paramedics to give shots to people they arrested.

Sometimes the people helping would make jokes about how strong the medicine was in making their patients fall asleep. Videos from California, Tennessee, and Florida show people saying “night, night” before they die.

Claire Zagorski, who works as a paramedic and does research on addiction at the University of Texas at Austin, said that emergency medical workers can end up acting like the police if they are not careful.

Fans of sedatives say that they help quickly treat drug-related behavior emergencies and psychotic episodes. They also help protect first responders from violence. Sedatives are given safely to thousands of people each year to get them to the hospital for life-threatening conditions. Critics say giving people drugs to make them sleepy should be allowed only in very few cases or not allowed at all. They argue that giving these drugs to people without their agreement is too dangerous when the police are involved.

Ohio State University teacher Dr. Mark DeBard thought that sedation could help calm down really upset people in emergency situations. He believed it could be useful for police officers dealing with these kinds of situations. Today, he said he’s upset that police officers are still using too much force instead of treating those situations like medical emergencies. He is also shocked that paramedics have given unnecessary injections by overdiagnosing excited delirium.

Some people believe that the idea was wrong because using sedatives and police restraint together can be very dangerous. The deaths have made many people sad all across the country.

“I saw people giving strong medicines on the streets that could kill someone,” said Honey Gutzalenko, a nurse. Her husband died after getting a shot of midazolam in 2021 while being held down by police near San Francisco.

Please, I’m asking you to stop.

Jackson was on a truck near a radio station between two small cities in Wisconsin. A worker called emergency services early in the morning on October 8, 2021, because they wanted the police to help remove a stranger who seemed strange but not dangerous.

The police video and many documents from law enforcement and medical reports explain how the situation got worse.

An Altoona cop saw Jackson in the parking lot. Jackson seemed worried and anxious, he kept looking around and speaking quietly. He had used methamphetamine to help himself deal with his schizophrenia, as a psychiatrist explained. He had been going to jail and living on the streets. He went to the emergency room often to find a place to sleep.

The police officer, along with another officer and a deputy, said he could go if he told them his name. Jackson said no.

The police found out who he was by looking at his tattoos, and found out that he was on probation for having meth. They saw that the truck was slightly damaged and chose to take him into custody.

Trotro, Taxi drivers charging unapproved fares to be arrested

The Ministry of Transport has instructed the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to watch for any commercial driver who is charging new transport fares that exceed the current rates, which is putting undue strain on passengers.

In a statement released in Accra on Sunday, April 14, 2024, and signed by its Public Relations Unit, the Ministry stated that negotiations for new public transport fares are still ongoing with the Road Transport Operators following the recent increase in fuel prices and other related operational costs.

The Ministry urged commercial drivers to continue charging the current public transport fares as directed by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).

It warned that those who fail to comply with this directive will face legal consequences.

“The Ministry is urging the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to be on the lookout for any driver who goes contrary to the directive issued by the GPRTU and the GRTCC”, the statement in part read.

On Thursday, April 11, 2024, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) issued a joint statement in Accra, urging commuters not to pay any extra transport fares beyond the current rates.

The unions labeled the reported fare hikes by some commercial drivers as illegal and emphasized that discussions with the Ministry of Transport regarding new charges were still ongoing.

“We are currently engaging stakeholders to consider the various cost components and agree on the way forward. As has been the practice, the leadership met with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday 10th April, 2024, to present our demands. Once consensus is reached, the general public will be duly informed”, the statement in part read.

Two transport operating groups, the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana (C-DAG) and the Transport Operators of Ghana, announced a 15% increase in transport fares effective Saturday, April 13, 2024.

The decision was attributed to the recent increment in fuel prices, the government’s perceived indifference to reducing petrol prices, and the rising costs of vehicle spare parts and lubricants.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has reported that individuals suspected of being involved in the alleged theft of five Biometric Verification Devices (BVD) have been handed over to the police.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services at the EC, stated that this action was taken to ensure that those responsible, if found guilty, are held accountable for stealing state property.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on April 13, Dr. Quaicoe mentioned that the police commenced their investigation approximately a month ago when the EC officially discovered that the BVDs were missing.

“That is why we said that we have lost this [BVDs] and these are the suspects. So investigate and let them go through the legal regime, whatever has to be done, should be done.

“So they have been interdicted and they are now going through the security investigation. I am told that they will be arraigned before court soon. If they are found guilty, the law should deal with them,” he said.

The Director of Electoral Services clarified that there is no cause for alarm regarding the missing Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) as they have not been activated.

However, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), argued on the same show that the BVD had been missing for more than a month. He credited NDC legislators for bringing attention to the issue, suggesting that without their efforts, the missing BVDs might not have gained public attention.

On March 20, the Minority in Parliament urged the police to take urgent action following the alleged disappearance of seven biometric devices. They expressed concern about the potential impact on the upcoming December elections.

In a recent development, the Ghana Police Service is said to have arrested a Ghanaian man for allegedly misleading attendees at the convention.

It is reported that he deceived the church and attendees by pretending to be blind and then falsely claiming to have regained his sight during the service.

The incident has sparked a debate about the authenticity of miracles and the need for caution in verifying such claims.

The Church of Pentecost has not commented on the arrest or the incident, but sources indicate that they had promised to provide housing and support to the man who had genuinely been blind, as he and his family were reportedly homeless.
