The Ghana Police Service has declared an active pursuit of two individuals involved in the assault on Maxwell Konadu, the head coach of Nsoatreman, who was subjected to a brutal attack.

According to a police statement, the authorities have identified two individuals as suspects and are currently conducting a manhunt to apprehend them.

Despite Nsoatreman securing a goalless draw, placing second on the league table, some disgruntled fans expressed their displeasure with the results.

Following the final whistle, these fans assaulted Referee Robert Musey and his assistants before mercilessly beating Maxwell Konadu.

In response to the incident, the Ghana Football Association has swiftly imposed a temporary ban on Bofoakwa Tano FC, preventing them from using the Sunyani Coronation Park as their home venue.

On Thursday, November 16, 2023, a Kia Rhino truck crashed into the Suame Divisional Police Headquarters in the Ashanti Region, resulting in the death of an unidentified woman in her mid-40s.

The victim, who reportedly lost both legs in the fatal accident, was pronounced dead at the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

According to eyewitness Kwadwo Asirifii, the driver lost control of the vehicle due to a brake pad malfunction, leading to the tragic incident.

“The truck was heading towards Offinso from Accra when it veered off the road in a reversed manner, the woman who had just stepped out of a commercial bus was crushed by the car immediately after the commercial bus left the scene”.

“The truck subsequently crushed into a gutter and later into the police Headquarters’ fence wall before it eventually clashed with three cars parked on the station’s compound,” he said.

  • Kenya intends to increase police salaries by 40% over next three years

Kenya intends to increase police salaries by 40% over next three years

Kenya’s police and prison officers are going to get a 40% raise in their pay over the next three years. This is based on a review of the security sector, said President William Ruto.

The pay raise is meant to make people feel better and make them feel more secure.

A group that studied how to make policing better in the country suggested it.

Kenyan police are known for being violent and taking bribes, but people are also worried about their well-being.

They don’t get much money and some have turned to crime. In the past few years, some police officers have died by suicide and it’s been acknowledged that many of them are having a hard time with their mental health.

In the past, there were attempts to increase their salary, but it did not make Kenyans think of them differently.

“We will look at the rules for our military to make them happier and improve our safety. ”

He said the suggestion to increase pay by 40% over three years was “carefully thought out. We will now wait for the Salaries and Remuneration Commission to make the needed changes so we can carry out the decision.

The president promised to be tough on corruption in the police and acknowledged that it is a big problem.

He said that the raise in pay and other changes they want to make will solve the problems the task force found – not enough money, bad leadership, problems with the structure and organization, and corruption.

The group, led by David Maraga, was created in December after Mr. Ruto became president.

We were asked to find ways to make the working and living conditions better for police, prison, and NYS officers, and also to suggest other changes.

The task force suggested that people should be at least 21 years old to join the police force, not 18. It was also recommended to require a C-minus grade for admission to secondary school and to spend more time on training. Currently, the minimum grade for admission is a D-plus.

The task force also wants to improve medical and housing benefits, decrease overcrowding in prisons, and grow the NYS program, which teaches young people important life and work skills.

Mr Ruto said the government will do all the things that were suggested, but it might take some time because they have to change some laws and policies.

  • Transit trade heavily affected by the numerous police checkpoints – GSA

Transit trade heavily affected by the numerous police checkpoints – GSA

The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) has urged the Police to support the growth of the nation’s transit trade sector without disrupting its flow.

Addressing a workshop organized by the Authority for Police officers to enhance the nation’s trade routes, Head of the Freight and Logistics Department at GSA, Fred Asiedu Dartey, acknowledged the loss of transit business to neighboring landlocked countries due to excessive Police checks on highways.

Mr Dartey noted that 80% of road-related harassment was attributed to the Police, causing delays and extortion at checkpoints, which deterred international traders. As a result, traders have been redirecting their activities to ports in Togo, Ivory Coast, and other more favorable destinations within the sub-region.

Emphasizing the economic significance of transit trade, Dartey highlighted its substantial annual contribution to the national economy, stressing the need to sustain this sector.

He highlighted the substantial number of checkpoints, citing 63 from the port of Tema to Hamele and a total of 53 from Tema to Paga, suggesting that while the structure of Police checkpoints is justified, it should not impede the smooth flow of trade.

“We need to do something. Drivers spend 1 to 3 hours at checkpoints over petty issues, and extortion is affecting the patronage of Ghana’s ports. The police should not sell the birthright of the nation for a pittance on the corridors,” Mr. Dartey stated.

The challenges affecting transit corridors were further discussed, involving taxes on services, interference from middlemen, and delays at border crossings.

Additional hurdles such as language barriers, demurrage charges, and banking complexities were identified during the discussion.

Officers were reminded of the complexities of international trade and encouraged to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure proper protocols are followed in managing diverse situations.

“Trade facilitation is very crucial and transit trade is key. We should not impede the development of transit trade because it will affect the prospects for the development of the nation’s ports,” Mr Dartey said.

CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Ms. Benonita Bismarck, highlighted in her speech that transit trade facilitation is in harmony with the goals of the AfCFTA and emphasized the Authority’s commitment to championing it.

“Contrary to the widely held perception that Ghana does not derive any benefits from the transit trade through its corridors, the outcome of a study in 2015 showed that tangible financial benefits accrued to operators along the transit value chain,” she said.

In a bid to enhance the sector, the Shippers Authority initiated an MoU with landlocked countries to strengthen essential collaboration.

Additionally, land has been procured in Ghana’s Central Region for erecting a freight park and a one-stop complex. These structures are expected to be replicated along major corridors.

The Chief Executive expressed optimism that these initiatives would positively impact the growth of transit trade, highlighting the need for all stakeholders to contribute to its enhancement.

Police releases 23 people arrested for attacking palace over sale of land in Kweiman

Court-Connected ADR has led to a request for the court to release the accused individuals.

The accused individuals, namely Gideon Amartey (aka Kitinki), Richard Amartey Mensah, Eziel Adjetey Adjei, Nii Anang Mameley, Mensah Ago, Michael Adjei, Amarh Amartey Kwei, Ebenezer Laryea, Joseph Nii Mensah Anang, Emmanuel Ago Doko, Reuben Tetteh, Samuel Armah Amartey, Isaac Mensah Lumor, Isaac Armah, Felix Adjei, Ernest Addo, Wisdom Tawiah, Amos Adjei, Isaac Afotey, Mershark Amartey, and Jospeh Amartey Lartea Perry, were charged with conspiracy to commit the crimes of assault and causing damage. They pleaded not guilty and were granted bail.

The accused persons’ lawyer requested that, given that their families lived in the same vicinity, they would prefer to resolve the matter through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). The court granted the defense counsel’s request.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, Nii Amartey Kwei III, is the Chief of Kweiman in Accra. In May 2023, the Chief granted a parcel of land in Kweiman to a developer, which was met with opposition from the youth.

On July 6, 2023, the grantee and the Chief began working on the land, but the accused individuals, reportedly armed with offensive weapons, arrived at the site and prevented the developer from proceeding.

The prosecution stated that the accused individuals also went to the Palace and attacked four elders with cutlasses, wood, and metallic objects.

During this altercation, they allegedly destroyed 12 plastic chairs and a table valued at GHC800. A police report was filed, and the accused individuals were subsequently arrested. Medical forms were issued to four complainants— Ibrahim Anum, Benjamin Amartey, Joshua Odai, and Francis Mensah—to seek medical attention. Upon reviewing the medical reports, it was confirmed that the complainants had been assaulted.

  • Oganisers of #OccupyJulorbiHouse demo to drag Police to court over human right abuses

Oganisers of #OccupyJulorbiHouse demo to drag Police to court over human right abuses

Democracy Hub has decided to pursue legal action against the Ghana Police Service in response to alleged incidents of brutality against protesters during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest that took place on September 21, 2023.

This decision comes after the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, stated that the organizers had not substantiated their claims of assault by the police.

During a year-end dialogue session with various stakeholders, Dr. Dampare said “after months of completing that demonstration to today, not a shred of evidence has been brought up to indicate that the police have brutalised them.”

In a statement shared by #FixTheCountry on behalf of Democracy Hub on October 31, the group noted that the IGP received direct accounts of the brutality meted out to the protestors as well as the manner in which citizens devices were confiscated to prevent the filming of abuses.

“This can be confirmed by several independent persons who were in that meeting. Also, several videos and images in the public domain confirm the brutalities meted out to protestors including journalists and lawyers present on that day,” the statement added.

According to the group, the deem the IGP’s statement as “reckless” and one that reflects “a worrying institutional trend of disregarding proper procedure and standards.”

“We are also disappointed by the failure of the IGP to exhibit the critical leadership expected of his office as well as a commitment to standards reflective of the Ghana Police Service’s pivotal role in maintaining law and order,” the group further noted.

In view of this, the group has resolved to initiate immediate legal action against the Ghana Police Service “in connection with the violation of our constitutional rights to assembly, freedom from torture and inhumane treatment.”

    Background

The first day of the 3-day protest which ended on September 23, was marked by police arrests, with the protest being labeled an “unlawful assembly and violation of the Public Order Act.”

Numerous individuals, including journalists, protesters, and bystanders, recounted incidents of police brutality during the arrests.

A female reporter from Metro TV, Bridget Otoo, shared her experience of being manhandled by multiple police officers when she attempted to film the assault of a man who had been pulled from the entrance of the Accra Regional Police Command onto the premises.

She reported that some officers tugged at her shirt collar, while one officer attempted to seize her cell phone, with which she had captured the footage, from between her thighs as she tried to protect it from them.

In a separate account, Barker Vormawor, the protestor’s convenor, stated that he and other demonstrators were confined to a room at the Accra Regional Police Command, where 17 individuals, purportedly intelligence officers, were allowed into the room to physically assault them.

The second and third days of the protest were relatively peaceful, with no reports of abuse or assault against any protestor by the police.

Police grab two Ghanaians for swindling foreigner of $1,250,000

Two individuals have made an appearance before an Accra Circuit Court, facing charges of defrauding an American of $1,205,000 by falsely claiming to provide the victim with seven 20-foot containers filled with money.

The accused, Dzam Abotsi, a car dealer, and Nana Kwame Yanka, a businessman, have been charged with conspiracy to commit fraud and defrauding under false pretenses.

Abotsi reportedly charged the complainant, Gary Bernsten, $100,500, along with an additional $200,000 for container rent and security services. The exact amount taken by other individuals involved in the scheme remains unclear.

Both Abotsi and Yanka have pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court, presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah, granted bail to the accused persons in the amount of GHC1 million cedis, with three sureties, one of which must be justified. An accomplice, identified as Alhaji Tanko, who is also facing similar charges, is currently at large.

The case has been adjourned to November 23, 2023.

According to the prosecution led by Superintendent of Police Augustus Yirenkyi, the complainant, Gary Bernsten, is an American Asset Recovery Officer. Bernsten was led to a warehouse in Sowutuom, where he inspected seven containers supposedly filled with United States dollars.

The prosecution informed the court that a forensic examination of the dollars in the containers confirmed their authenticity.

Abotsi purportedly charged Bernsten $100,500, in addition to $200,000 for container rent and security services, with the funds being transferred through cryptocurrency and wire transfers.

Bernsten engaged the services of Skynet Logistics to transport the seven containers filled with money to Tema, Community 12, based on Abotsi’s recommendation.

However, a few days later, when Bernsten returned to move the containers to Tema Harbour, he discovered the warehouse was empty.

A report was filed with the police, leading to the arrest of Abotsi and Yanka. The prosecution stated that efforts were underway to apprehend Alhaji Tanko and other individuals who remain at large.

He was accompanied by a police van with officers, including one senior officer in the front seat and two others in the back. While marching, he held a Ghanaian flag and a megaphone, while the police van’s siren blared.

Court to decide how to distribute GHS5 million from NAM 1 – Police

The police have stated that the court will be responsible for deciding the disbursement of the GH¢5 million provided to the service by Nana Appiah Mensah, also known as NAM1, the CEO of the now-defunct Menzgold.

The police further explained that this sum has been placed in the police exhibit account at the Bank of Ghana, specifically earmarked for court proceedings. According to a press statement reported by GhanaWeb Business, the police mentioned that, “the amount is part of investigations into petitions received from some customers of MenzGold Ghana Company Limited and Brew Marketing Consult Limited, currently before the Accra High Court against suspect Nana Appiah Mensah, popularly known as Nam 1.”

“We would like to state that the decision on the disbursement of the money would be determined by the court,” the police added.

Menzgold, in an official statement regarding the transfer of funds to the police, stated that this action is intended to expedite the disbursement of funds to clients who have undergone the verification process in the settlement.

In 2018, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) directed Menzgold to cease its gold trading activities with the general public.

The SEC’s rationale for this decision was that Menzgold had engaged in the acquisition and deposit of gold collectibles from the public and issued contracts with promised returns to clients without possessing a valid license from the Commission.

This was in contravention of “section 109 of Act 929 with consequences under section 2016 (I) of the same Act,” according to the SEC.

  • Divinity and science: Why Kantanka did not receive government support up until now

Divinity and science: Why Kantanka did not receive government support up until now

Former President John Dramani Mahama has provided insights into why Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, the founder of the Great Kosa Company, faced challenges in securing essential support for his automotive firm from successive governments.

During a discussion about why the automotive company struggled to secure capital investment, the former president noted that governments, including the one led by the late Jerry John Rawlings, faced difficulties in comprehending the precise nature of Apostle Kantanka’s work.

Mahama explained that although the government expressed a desire to assist, Apostle Kantanka didn’t adequately demonstrate that his work was rooted in science. This lack of clarity hindered efforts to attract investors.

“When you say God gave you a vision and you took an ant hill and built an engine, I mean no bank would give you money, you get my point. To build a car, you must build the car. You need metals, (sic), you must make the engine… if it is an electric car, you must do the circuiting and all that.

“It is all science-based. I was in the first government of Rawlings and that was when a delegation was sent to see how he can be helped but he told us it is divine… If it is divine, then God would give that capital to do it – you get my point,” he said.

Mahama, who also serves as the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2024 election, emphasized that Kwadwo Safo Kantanka Jnr, Apostle Kantanka’s son who now leads the company, has effectively articulated the company’s activities.

“So, we could not get proof of what really to help him with but his son has taken over the business and his son says it is an assembling plant – we are importing the components and we are building the vehicle. And so now the government has started to buy Kantanka cars, I have seen the police using some of them and so on,” he said.

Currently, the Ghana Police Service utilitises some vehicles made by Kantanka.

Police detain two in connection with murder of 27-year-old in Ashanti Region

Two individuals have been apprehended by the Ashanti Region police in connection with the demise of a 27-year-old man who was reportedly stabbed by unknown assailants in Tafo-Pankrono, Ashanti Region.

Owusu Banahene lost his life on October 18, upon reaching the hospital after he was discovered near a public restroom in the vicinity.

While the police are conducting an investigation into the precise cause of his demise, the deceased’s family suspects that the incident may be linked to a long-standing conflict between rival youth from Adabraka and Pankrono.

The passing of the 27-year-old, who had intended to travel abroad on Friday, has incited outrage within the Pankrono community.

The deceased’s brother, Anokye Clinton, has urged the police to expedite their inquiry and ensure the apprehension of the culprits.

However, there has been a substantial police presence, along with intensified patrols, in order to prevent potential retaliatory actions.

“It’s the youth who have been having problems with Pankrono. They always come here, either to steal or fight. If something happens, they don’t know how to resolve their issue. They always come and fight, and it has been going on for centuries, when they come, and we call the police, they come to arrest the person, and the next day the person is walking freely.

“We will not let it slide unless one of them dies too, the deceased was set to travel today to Canada, and every documentation was ready. And the next day, you guys just stabbed him. I was called that someone has stabbed him to death over area fight,” he narrated.

He added, “I expect the police to arrest anyone involved or else actions that do not concern the police will take place. We will not sit down and allow our brother to be murdered just like that, if they don’t arrest all of them, action will be taken”.

  • 10 policemen to be probed in connection with rapist Met cop David Carrick case

10 policemen to be probed in connection with rapist Met cop David Carrick case

A group that monitors and investigates the police is looking into 12 police officers, who are currently or previously employed, to see how they dealt with past claims against a bad police officer named David Carrick.

The police officer who was a serial rapist was sent to prison for the rest of his life for misusing his position and taking terrible advantage of 12 vulnerable victims for a period of 20 years. This happened earlier this year.

Carrick, who is 48 years old, was called a terrible person by one victim, and another victim said she had experienced something very bad when he attacked her.

The court in Southwark heard that a police officer named ‘Bastard Dave’ committed many violent and brutal sexual assaults from 2003 to 2020.

The Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, said that the crimes committed by this person are a disgrace to our police force. She also emphasized the importance of finding out how he managed to be a police officer for such a long time.

Today, the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), announced that they are looking into the actions of 10 current and former police officers for very serious wrongdoing, and one other officer and staff member for less serious wrongdoing.

Five Metropolitan Police officers, including a detective constable, detective sergeant, detective inspector, and two chief inspectors, are being investigated for serious wrongdoing.

In July, the IOPC said it will investigate the MPS for not properly looking into accusations against Carrick in 2002, 2016, 2019, and 2021. They don’t often do this kind of investigation.

The investigations have been moving forward and this month, the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) informed five of its officers that they are being investigated for serious misconduct. These officers include a detective constable, detective sergeant, detective inspector, and two chief inspectors.
A person who used to work for MPS, now works at the City of London Police force. Two other people, who used to be a police constable and a superintendent in MPS, are also being investigated for serious wrongdoing.

A worker in the MPS and a police constable have been told they are being looked into for bad behavior.

People have received notices because the IOPC found signs that they might have broken the rules of how police are supposed to behave.

Some people believe that they may not have done a good job of looking into accusations against David Carrick when he was a police officer.

This doesn’t always mean that there will be consequences for bad behavior.

As investigators gathered evidence, they looked at important papers and studied the laws, policies, and instructions that were in effect at that time.

IOPC regional director Mel Palmer mentioned that we are thinking of all the women who were harmed by David Carrick and came forward to report it.

After we looked into how the police handled complaints against Carrick earlier this year, we decided to investigate several instances where police officers and staff may have made mistakes when dealing with these complaints.

If these problems had been handled properly, Carrick might have faced serious punishment and been kicked out of the police force a long time ago, instead of being arrested later on.

We told some officers that they are being investigated, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they will be punished right away. After we finish looking into a situation, we will decide if anyone should be punished for their actions.

“We have found some things that individual forces can learn from, as well as national recommendations that we are currently working on. ”

The IOPC said that two officers have been given notices of investigation because they are looking into concerns that the Wiltshire Police did not properly investigate a report made against Carrick in 2016.

A police officer from Wiltshire and another officer, who is now a higher-ranking inspector, have received notices accusing them of serious wrongdoing.

This investigation started because Wiltshire Police told us about something in July 2023.

Ejura robbery: They are not armed robbers, release them – Police told

The Assembly Member for the Sarki Kura Electoral Area in the Ejura Sekyedumase Municipality, Adam Alhassan, is calling for the release of two suspects apprehended by the police in Ejura, Ashanti Region, in connection with an alleged foiled robbery.

He asserted that the police statement is filled with falsehoods and urged the Inspector General of Police to reevaluate the activities of the Police Investigative Department, which he believes is contributing to issues in the nation.

“These two are men of integrity and are not armed robbers,” Alhassan said.

A police officer, General Sergeant Ahmed Kamal, met his untimely death after armed robbers opened fire on him and his colleagues at Ejura in the Ashanti Region.

The robbers who were said to be preparing to rob a mobile money vendor on Monday, October 9, opened fire on the policemen who attempted to counter their move.

The Police in a press statement noted that two of its officers sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the hospital where one was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Fortunately, the Police managed to capture two out of the three suspects, Alhaji Wahab Suleiman and Ibrahim Abubakari.
The two in police custody also sustained gunshot wounds.

The third robber is currently on the run but the Police say they are on a manhunt for the suspect.

But according to Alhassan, “Alhaji in particular is an informant of the police in the municipality.”

“The police also said that two suspects were arrested with one on the run, which is a total fabrication of facts.

“The three suspects reported to the Ejura police voluntarily and were told to go to the Mampong police for their statements to be taken, and they were subsequently detained and later charged with conspiracy to commit murder and murder, and not robbery as was alleged in the police statement.

“We the family want to use this medium to tell the IGP to monitor and review the operations of the Police Investigative Department since their operations are causing a lot of problems in the police service because any Ghanaian that will meet them will mistake them for armed robbers and we urge the government to free our brothers,” he added.

After the shootout, the police managed to retrieve 2 SB shotguns, a pump-action gun, 6 live BB cartridges and a used BB cartridge.

Meanwhile, the Police have commiserated with the bereaved family of General Sergeant Ahmed Kamal.

  • The Police can’t do anything to me, it is the State that can – COP Alex Mensah (Rtd)

The Police can’t do anything to me, it is the State that can – COP Alex Mensah (Rtd)

Retired Commissioner of Police, COP George Alex Mensah, has asserted that the Ghana Police Service lacks the authority to penalize him for his alleged involvement in a plot to have the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, removed from office.

He contends that even if the committee investigating the matter finds him guilty of any wrongdoing, it is the responsibility of the state to prosecute him and establish its case against him.

COP George Alex Mensah, who had been on leave prior to his official retirement on September 18, 2023, after 31 years of service, was recorded in a leaked conversation expressing criticism of Dr. Dampare’s administration. He also suggested that he would not support the governing party if Dr. Dampare remained in office until the 2024 elections. He was accompanied by another senior police officer, Superintendent George Asare, and former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bugri Naabu, who admitted to recording the conversation.

COP Alex Mensah (Retired) has already appeared before a parliamentary committee tasked with investigating the contents of the leaked tape. During his testimony, he made further critical comments about the IGP, characterizing him as the worst IGP the service has ever had. The parliamentary committee is yet to submit its report after conducting hearings involving the concerned parties, including the IGP.

Despite the ongoing investigation, the retired COP Alex Mensah appears unruffled by the incident and has stated that even his colleague, Superintendent George Asare, who is still in the service, has not committed any offense warranting punishment.

“The committee is doing a perfect job because they are looking for the truth and they’ve gotten all the truth to assist them to come out with their report.

“Unfortunately for them, I am no more a police man. But what has he [Supt. George Asare] done? Because he went to see a politician and spoke to him he should be charged? For what? If you go into the Police Service’s rules and regulations, it says that, if you do anything that will bring about political uproar, then you can be charged. And the one who brought the uproar is the one who brought this [The recording] into the media. There was nothing like a plot” he reiterated.

“The Police Service cannot do anything to me. If the committee comes out that I have committed a crime, then the state can do something to me. I have nothing to do with the Police Service as I speak.

Asked whether he retired with all his benefits he responded “Yes, nothing can be in jeopardy. If there’s a crime, even that one has to go to court for the court to prove that indeed I have committed a crime.”

The prospective New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Bekwai Constituency in the Ashanti Region has asserted that the entire matter has been blown out of proportion. He firmly maintains that there was no genuine plot to oust the IGP, contrary to the suggestions made.

He emphasized that the recorded conversation was of a private nature, and the primary concern should be the individual responsible for leaking the conversation, rather than focusing on the participants who were engaged in routine discussions.

The former police commissioner has previously informed the parliamentary committee that the tape was tampered with to serve a particular malicious agenda.

“I did not say anything wrong in the tape. I was not planning a coup, neither was I planning to go and sell cocaine or steal. All that I said on the tape is the truth. And as I said before the committee, if you give me the chance, I will say it here and say it anywhere else.”

What offence have we committed? Having a conversation with somebody privately is it an offence? Then we should look for the person who recorded and brought it out. He’s the one who has caused the problem. He’s the person who should be charged. People are just misinterpreting everything. Private conversations are private conversations and if you illegally record them and take it to court it will be thrown away.”

‘Fake doctor’ on the run detained by South Africa’s police

A fugitive accused of posing as a doctor, has reportedly been re-arrested, according to South African police.

As we previously reported, the police claimed to have started a manhunt for the defendant who escaped from custody the previous week.

They called him a “Facebook con artist” who preyed on female users.

He was allegedly detained once more early on Monday in Vosloorus, a town close to Johannesburg, as a result of a tip from a media outlet.

“[The] police in Gauteng appreciates the role played by the media in particular and the community in general in the fight against crime,” a police statement said.

The suspect, whose birthplace has not yet been made public by the police, was supposed to appear in court in Pretoria on Tuesday but managed to flee.

He was already charged with several offenses, but now he also faces the allegation of evading arrest.

He is said to have posted on Facebook that he was looking for investors before defrauding health professionals in two separate instances.

Chele hasn’t responded to the charges yet.

Police in South Africa looking for phoney doctor who fled custody

Police in South Africa are searching for a suspect who ran away from custody. The suspect is accused of pretending to be a doctor.

Kingsley Leeto Chele is someone who pretended to be a doctor or pharmacist on Facebook and tricked women into giving him their money, according to the police.

He is also known as Dr Kingsley Chele or Dr KJ Ncube.

Chele is being accused of lying to healthcare workers on Facebook about wanting to find investors. He then took their money without actually having any projects to invest in.

He got caught by the police on October 2nd because people reported he was doing fraudulent things in June.

A court in Pretoria said he couldn’t be released from jail and he had to stay there until his next court date, which was set for this Tuesday.

He got away on the day before yesterday, while the police were arranging his things at his home, and he has been running away ever since, says the police.

The police want anyone who knows where he is to contact them.

The man, Dr. Matthew Lani, recently appeared on the app TikTok. He was seen wearing medical clothing called scrubs and giving advice on health matters at a public hospital.

  • German migrant car crashes resulted in seven fatalities

German migrant car crashes resulted in seven fatalities

German police say that seven people have died when a crowded minivan, driven by someone suspected of smuggling people, flipped over.

Over 20 people who were trying to migrate, including children, are believed to have been in the van.

The driver tried to escape from the police at a road check, but then crashed near Ampfing in Bavaria, according to authorities.

The accident occurred during an increase in the act of smuggling people. Because of this increase, several countries in Central and Eastern Europe have started checking their borders.

The police tried to stop a Mercedes Vito van at about 03:00 (01:00 GMT) on Friday.

The driver of the car with an Austrian license plate sped up and then crashed multiple times at a junction on the A94 motorway, between Austria and Munich.

There have been a few accidents with people-smugglers in European countries lately.

On Thursday in Hungary, a car with French license plates that was believed to be secretly transporting migrants crashed, causing the death of two people and injuring six others.

A car crashed in the town of Burghausen, near the German-Austrian border. Four people got hurt. This happened about 50km away from the place where the accident occurred on Friday.

Some countries in the EU, like Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic, have started checking their borders again because there has been more smuggling happening.

The increased checks done by Polish authorities have helped to decrease the number of migrants crossing the borders.

The A94 motorway in south-eastern Germany is a common path for people-smugglers who illegally cross the border from Austria.

The Interior Minister of Bavaria, Joachim Herrmann, said that the sad accident showed that border controls in Germany should be improved to prevent smugglers from coming in.

The number of people asking for asylum for the first time in Germany increased by 78% in the first seven months of 2023. The police say that about one-fourth of the immigrants who come to Germany are helped by people who smuggle them into the country.

Baltimore/Washington Airport closed as police look into ‘bomb threat’

Traffic going to Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) was stopped on Wednesday because police were looking into a bomb threat involving a vehicle.

The roads going to and from the international airport in Maryland were shut down for a serious police investigation at around 3. 00pm

The airport said that traffic going to the airport is not allowed right now. People in the terminal should stay where they are for now.

CNN was informed by sources that someone had threatened to explode a bomb inside a car parked near the airport curb.

At around 4. 20pm, the airport reported that the police confirmed that the vehicle in question was safe, and they would gradually start opening the roads again.

They are still looking into what happened.

Alleged plot to oust IGP: Parliamentary Committee suspends sitting indefinitely

The ad hoc Committee responsible for investigating the leaked tape revealing a plot to oust Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from his position has suspended its sittings indefinitely.

Chairman of the Committee, Samuel Atta Akyea, confirmed the information during an interview on JoyNews on Wednesday.

The in-camera hearing was slated to end on October 14, but the sitting has been suspended indefinitely.

On whether the in-camera hearing will be protracted again, Mr Atta Akyea said, “It is not going to be protracted because right now we need to look at the evidence and most probably, start writing our report.”

“Unless there are residual matters, if there are residual matters that we later discover after reading the evidence in cold print,” he added.

According to Mr Atta Akyea, the members of the committee will listen to the audio in the committee’s possession on Thursday.

“We are going to listen to audio tomorrow. All the members of the Committee have been summoned here to listen to the audio attentively. Now we will begin to internalize all that was said ,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chief Daniel Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated that the private hearing conducted by the committee investigating the leaked tape concerning the plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has affirmed his stance that the audio recording was not manipulated.

He asserts that both Superintendent Eric Gyebi and Superintendent George Asare have acknowledged the authenticity of their voices and the content of the conversation during the presentation of a new tape at the private hearing.

Both Police officers, contrary to their earlier position during the public hearing, according to Bugri Naabu, conceded to the full details of their engagement with the politician as captured on the tape.

Speaking to the media after Tuesday’s hearing, Bugri Naabu said “You were all there when they told the committee in public that I’m a liar but now before the committee they have all, including Gyebi, admitted their voices on the tape.

“I want to tell you all that as a chief I don’t tell lies I was in my office and then these people came to say the things they said. I felt it was important for the state security and for the NPP government to know what they were doing in there so I taped them and went to give the tape to the president,” he said.

He stressed “Now they have all admitted that it is their voice so I want to clear my name that I am not a liar. And if they come out to challenge anything now, we will play what happened in there for all Ghanaians to hear.”

Kenyan court temporarily halts deployment of police officers to Haiti

A Kenyan high court has issued an interim order blocking the government’s plans to deploy police officers to Haiti or any other country while awaiting the hearing of a petition.

The judge has considered the issues raised in the application as being of national importance and public interest.

One of the petitioners, former presidential candidate Ekuru Aukot, argued that the proposed deployment was unconstitutional.

Questions were raised regarding whether regular police officers could be deployed for international assignments.

Mr. Aukot also emphasized that the country could not afford to send 1,000 officers abroad while facing ongoing security challenges at home, including recent ethnic clashes in western Kenya that resulted in seven fatalities.

The coastal region of Lamu has also experienced attacks from the Somalia-based al-Shabab militant group, leading to the imposition of a curfew.

The Interior Minister assured that the deployment would not compromise the nation’s safety and security. Further directions from the court on this matter are expected at the end of October.

Ugandan police apprehends 40 individuals in a crackdown on Bobi Wine supporters

Uganda’s police are touting their operation as a “success” in thwarting supporters of opposition leader Bobi Wine from welcoming him back to the country.

On Thursday, his followers had planned to receive him at Entebbe International Airport and accompany him on a sizable 50 km (30-mile) march to his residence. However, the police deemed this march illegal.

The security forces reported that, as part of their operation, they detained 40 suspects, including a Member of Parliament, on charges of “inciting violence.”

The police issued a statement, stating, “Joint deployments, including both overt and covert officers, were strategically positioned, and snap checkpoints were established on all roads leading to Entebbe… Various items intended for use in processions, such as red berets, handheld megaphone speakers, and white and red [party] T-shirts… were recovered and exhibited.”

On Thursday, Bobi Wine claimed he was forcibly taken by “goons” and placed under house arrest upon his return from South Africa. However, the police refuted the arrest claims, asserting that the 41-year-old singer-turned-politician was merely “escorted” to his home.

  • Police seek suspect in activist’s killing in New York City

The police are looking for someone they don’t know who killed a person fighting for fairness. The victim was stabbed many times while walking home from a wedding in New York.

Ryan Carson, who was 32 years old, was killed close to a bus station in a neighborhood called Crown Heights in Brooklyn on the 2nd of October.

The person being accused, who is not known by their name, was behaving in a restless or irritated way before the sudden attack happened without any reason.

Mayor Eric Adams promised that the police will keep working until someone is arrested.

The video from a surveillance camera shows the person suspected of a crime wearing dark clothes. Carson and another woman, who is not known, were seen sitting on a bench near a bus stop around 4:00 in the morning.

Officials say that Mr. Carson and his friend started to leave when they saw the suspect knocking over scooters. But then the suspect came up to them and started yelling rude words.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said that Mr. Carson quickly positioned himself between the man and his female friend to keep her safe. Kenny also mentioned that Carson was trying to make the situation less intense.

Shortly after, the person being accused stabbed Mr. Carson three times. One of the stabs hit Mr. Carson’s chest and went into his heart, which caused his death.

Mr Carson was laying on the sidewalk, close to death. A man with a knife kicked him in the chest. He also threatened to stab the woman with him and spat in her face, said Mr Kenny.

A woman who we don’t know arrived shortly after and said sorry. She is believed to be the suspect’s girlfriend.

On Wednesday, the police shared a picture of the person they suspect and his girlfriend. They asked the public to help find them.

Local news sources report that the police are not revealing the name of the person they suspect of committing a crime. The suspect is 18 years old and has a past of behaving in a disruptive manner. The police will only make an arrest if they gather enough evidence that strongly suggests the suspect’s guilt.

MrCarson had been living in New York for 13 years. He spent ten years helping to plan campaigns for the New York Public Interest Research Group, a group that focuses on waste policy.

MrCarson also helped make a campaign called “No OD NY” to help more people know about overdose prevention centers.

According to a news source called Gothamist, in 2021, he walked more than 150 miles from New York City to Albany to make people more aware of harm reduction methods and centers.

“He always spoke up and supported others, and his generous nature brought happiness to everyone,” wrote New York Mayor Eric Adams on X (previously called Twitter). “We cannot even imagine someone killing him, and the police will keep working until we make sure the person responsible is punished. ”

Senator Chuck Schumer said that Mr. Carson is a talented and exceptional activist, after they both worked together at a town hall meeting about inflation.

“May we be inspired by his memory and accomplishments,” the Senator wrote on X.

  • Burkina Faso’s junta leader dismisses country’s chief police

The interim leader of Burkina Faso has made changes to the leadership of the country’s paramilitary police, just over a week after the ruling junta claimed to have foiled a coup attempt.

Ibrahim Traoré, on Wednesday, appointed Lt Col Kouagri Natama to replace Lt Col Evrard Somda, who had been in charge of the national gendarmerie since the previous year.

Additionally, Mr. Traoré has also made alterations to the personnel responsible for logistics and equipment management within both the Burkinabe army and the gendarmerie.

In the preceding week, the junta in Burkina Faso detained four police officers on suspicion of involvement in a “plot against state security.”

According to the French-language news outlet Jeune Afrique, two of the detained police officers served under the national gendarmerie and had close ties to Mr. Somda.

Natama, the new appointee, previously held the position of police chief in the northern Kaya region, where Mr. Traore’s unit was stationed.

  • Manhunt launched after five bullets fired at university in Maryland

The police are on a manhunt to find a person who they think shot and hurt five people at a university in Maryland.

A shooting happened during a celebration at Morgan State University in Baltimore and caused people to run away from each other.

Four guys and one girl, who were between 18 and 22 years old, got hurt. The police don’t know how many people were shooting.

According to Gun Violence Archive data, there have been 531 instances of mass shootings this year.

The shooting on Tuesday night at the historically black university caused a disruption to the school’s homecoming events. Homecoming is an important tradition at historically black colleges and it is usually one of the biggest events of the year.

A group of students wearing fancy clothes were going to a dance at their school. Suddenly, they heard gunshots and started running into buildings nearby.

Police officers went to the location after people reported gunshots at around 9:25 PM Eastern Standard Time (1:35 AM British Summer Time).

Baltimore’s police commissioner, Richard Worley, explained that the police at the campus heard gunshots and saw dorm windows broken. This made them think that someone with a gun was causing harm.

A rule was made that people had to stay inside their homes while police officers searched the area. Students sat or stayed in one place for a long time until they were allowed to leave around 12:30 AM Eastern Standard Time.

According to Baltimore police commissioner Richard Worley, the people injured in the shooting were taken to the hospital, but their injuries are not life-threatening.

Mr Worley said that the investigators don’t know how many people were shooting. The president of Morgan State University, Dr. David Kwabena Wilson, decided to cancel classes on Wednesday.

Dr Wilson said that the violence that happened in our community was pointless and didn’t make sense. It happened after a happy evening where we were celebrating and enjoying the students’ pageantry and beauty.

But Morgan is a close-knit family and we will continue with strong determination to keep progressing forward.

Parents of university students hurried to the place on Tuesday night after hearing about what happened.

Glenmore Blackwood came to the campus when his son, who is in his final year at the university, informed him about a shooting that took place.

“It’s really unfortunate. ” They were trying to do something positive by organizing an event to promote positivity. But then negative things happened, Mr. Blackwood told the Associated Press.

US government departments, such as the FBI and ATF, mentioned that they were helping with the aftermath of the shooting.

Morgan State University was established in 1867. It is a public school and has about 9,000 students.

  • Police’s swift action foils attack against suspects in murdered businesswoman case

The prompt action of police officers prevented the family members of the 35-year-old businesswoman allegedly killed by her house help in Sokoban, Kumasi, from physically attacking the prime suspect and accomplice.

The enraged family members, clearly upset, attempted to assault the suspects physically after their court appearance as they were being escorted out of the premises. Some family members even threw stones at the police vehicle carrying the suspects, chasing the vehicle in an attempt to attack them.

The 22-year-old prime suspect, Allister John, confessed to the alleged murder during his initial appearance before the Asokore Mampong District Court on Monday, September 18, 2023.

Another suspect believed to be an accomplice is also in custody.

The court proceedings revealed that the gruesome act involved a conspiracy among five individuals, including the two current suspects. Three additional suspects – Collins, Biggie, and Christian Obu – are currently at large, with the police actively pursuing their apprehension.

During their second appearance before the Asokore Mampong district court on Tuesday, October 3rd, the prosecution presented an autopsy report indicating that the victim’s death was unnatural, suggesting that she had been killed by someone else.

The prosecution requested the court to remand the suspects for the second time to allow for further investigations, a request granted by the court. The suspects are scheduled to reappear before the court on October 17, 2023.

  • Crisis in Russia leaves police exhausted, dissatisfied, and demoralized

In the early morning hours of January 14, 2020, horrifying screams echoed through an apartment complex in the southern Russian region of Krasnodar.

A concerned resident, alarmed and fearful, dialed the police, suspecting a possible assault on a woman.

Regrettably, no law enforcement response ensued.

The harrowing screams persisted, accompanied by loud disturbances and desperate pleas for assistance. Seven distress calls were placed to emergency services, yet police officers failed to arrive.

Fearing the worst, neighbors decided to take matters into their own hands, forcibly entering the apartment by breaking down the door.

    However, their intervention proved futile.

The agonizing screams had fallen silent, and tragically, the woman had lost her life.

    Police fail to answer calls

Vera Pekhteleva had been stabbed multiple times, beaten and strangled with an iron cord by her ex-boyfriend in an attack that lasted three-and-a-half hours.

    Vera Pekhteleva
Image caption,Vera Pekhteleva was tortured before being murdered by her ex-boyfriend – and police failed to show up

At the time, police said there were no officers or patrol cars in the area to attend. But later, five officers were found guilty of causing death by negligence and were sentenced to 18 months in jail, suspended for two years.

The court said the sentences, which were seen by many as lenient, were appropriate because officer shortages were a problem for “the whole force”.

Russia has one of the largest police forces in the world, employing over 900,000 officers to serve a population of 146 million, according to the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. It has nearly 630 officers per 100,000 people – more than double the US or the UK.

But in August, Interior Ministry Chief Vladimir Kolokoltsev said the country had a “critical” shortage of police officers, which could affect crime rates.

How can that be the case, given the sheer number of officers?

    Poor wages, stress and corruption

Russia’s sprawling geography and a lack of back-office support staff are partly to blame. But recent problems stem from a massive drop in police numbers – and many of those leaving are experienced officers.

Many former Russian police officers have told the BBC they are leaving the force and opting for less stressful jobs which are better paid.

“They haven’t adjusted the salary at all,” a former officer from Rostov, in southwest Russia, said. “After inflation and the new prices, it’s not enough.” He quit to become a taxi driver.

His friend, who was also a police officer, is now a courier.

Both of them earn twice as much as they did as police officers.

“I reached the rank of major (the equivalent to a sergeant in the UK). But still a person working at a supermarket earned more than me – hardly dangerous work. Only an idiot would join the police now,” the former officer from Rostov said.

The BBC has found that overstretched police forces are now refusing to open cases, even after a statement has been provided.

“Everyone gets 10 days to examine statements, whether there are five or 50, so obviously, the quality of work deteriorates,” argues one detective from the Siberian region of Russia.

“If there’s a string of 10 or so things they must do – call on neighbours, cross-examine witnesses, visit the crime-scene – they’ll just do one or two, and write down that it ‘wasn’t possible’ to complete the others.

“Then they refuse to open charges – so there will be no investigation,” he says.

Image caption,Many former Russian police officers told the BBC they are quitting for less stressful jobs that are better paid

As the number of officers drops, the pressures on those who remain increase.

Former officers have told the BBC this is leading to corruption.

“Officers are beating confessions out of people, inflating arrest quotas, we’re seeing this all the time,” says a police major from the Russian city of Tomsk.

“It’s only going to get worse. There will be falsification of evidence, targeted beatings, there just isn’t going to be time to investigate anything properly.

“You’ve got a lead and you need to chase it? Much simpler to drag the first suspect back to the station and beat him up, so he takes the blame.”

Some officers are getting locked up for their actions – further thinning the force.

This happened to Sergei, a former police officer of six years, jailed for beating a drug dealer. Sergei says he felt pressure to arrest the dealer and only hit him when he was about to eat his drugs to conceal the evidence.

He also tells the BBC that police resources were so thin he had to pay for work essentials himself. “I was using my own car, I bought my own paper, cartridges and printer; my own computer, my desk, my chair, my petrol… I laid my own floor tiles [in the office], repaired everything.”

A former officer from central Russia says that vacant positions have gone unfilled for a long time. “There’s been a shortage for ages. I started in 2015, and only two people have joined our team in the last eight years, while 15 have left.”

And according to several BBC sources, including two sergeants and one major, the Interior Ministry carried out a purge of officers who were linked to the opposition politician, Alexei Navalny, who has been held in a remote penal colony since 2021.

Long-serving, experienced officers were fired in this purge. One source said the Moscow Federal Security Service compiled a list of Navalny supporters based on a hacked database of email addresses.

The impact of the war in Ukraine

The number of police officers in Russia was declining before the start of the war in Ukraine.

Initially, the war convinced some officers to stay in the force. Russian police officers are exempt from being called up for military duty, so some officers who were on the verge of resigning when Russia invaded Ukraine told us they kept their jobs to avoid fighting.

“Either you sat tight, or you left and got drafted,” explains one officer from Moscow. “I know there were managers who made a list of everyone who’d threatened to quit and passed it straight to the [army] recruiters. Everyone was pretty scared.”

But as the war rumbles on, police numbers are dwindling. The force cannot fill existing gaps – let alone recruit the 40,000 extra personnel that the Interior Ministry says is needed in Donetsk and Luhansk, areas of Ukraine that Russia partly occupies.

Putin claimed a win after holding so-called referendums in the Russian-held regions of Ukraine in September 2022. But the polls were denounced as a sham by Ukraine’s government and its allies.

Russian police next to a police car
Image caption,Russian police officers are not allowed to have an opinion about the war

Russia predicts it will need another 42,000 officers by 2026 if it occupies further territories.

For serving police officers, having an opinion about the war is simply not allowed. They are not even allowed to call it a war.

“Officers must keep their mouths shut,” one detective says. “We can’t have personal views about the ‘special military operation’ – or they’ll fire us.”

The BBC has also been told officers are burning out because of extra paperwork brought on by the war.

Interior Ministry officials from the three Russian cities of Tomsk, Yekaterinburg and Yaroslavl claim they now spend most of their time investigating and revising “endless charges against people discrediting the army”.

“People are always looking for an excuse to denounce someone,” a former major from Tomsk says.

“There’s nobody around… Everyone’s gone to check on some grandma who saw a curtain that looked like the Ukrainian flag.

“I see where we’re heading,” he says. “There’s already an emphasis on crimes against the state. Going forward, more cases will fall into this category,” he predicts.

“As for real problems affecting ordinary people? Kidnap, robbery, rape, murder… there won’t be time to investigate.”

  • Pakistan: Mastung blast leaves at least 50 dead and several injured

Police say at least 50 people were killed and more than 50 injured in a suicide bombing in Pakistan.

The explosion occurred on Friday near a mosque in the country’s southwestern province of Balochistan, as people gathered to celebrate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.

The Balochistan government has declared a state of emergency. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Meanwhile, another explosion occurred at a mosque near the city of Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Footage from the scene in Baloch town of Mastung showed injured people being rescued by rescue workers and residents.

“The bodies were lying on top of each other,” said Saifullah, a local journalist in his 40s.

“The crowd was waiting for the [celebratory] procession to start. I was nearby when the bomb exploded,” he said, adding that 10 to 12 of his relatives were killed.

Haibullah, 22, was injured in the attack. Speaking to the BBC from his hospital bed in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, he said:
“Everything was ready on stage, the bomb exploded just two minutes after I arrived.

“Everyone was shocked. I broke my leg.”

Sarfaraz Ahmed Sasoli, in his 20s, was a security member of the procession. He said the bomber approached the area as religious leaders were gathering. “My older and younger brothers were all injured, as were my friends. Everyone in our area had an injured brother, father or son,” he said.

Local hospitals were overwhelmed by the number of victims, and local authorities called for blood donations on social media.

Balochistan Police Chief Abdul Khaliq Sheikh confirmed that it was a suicide blast. He said a senior police officer was killed while trying to arrest the attacker. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti said the blast was a “very heinous act” and condemned what he called “terrorist attacks” in both areas.
Separately, a Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police spokesman said two suicide bombers and a vehicle packed with explosives were stopped. He said one of the suicide bombers was “neutralized at the gate” while trying to enter the mosque, located within the police precinct in Hangu town.

The number of casualties at the Hangu mosque is unknown, but police said some people may be trapped under rubble after the roof collapsed.

Bordering Afghanistan and Iran, Balochistan is Pakistan’s largest province and is frequently attacked by armed militants, including the Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), or Pakistani Taliban, and the Islamic State group. Earlier this month, at least 11 people – including a prominent Muslim leader – were injured in an explosion in the same neighborhood.

However, the TTP denied any involvement in Friday’s blast, saying in a statement that such an attack was against its policy. The group also “vehemently condemned” the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa attack, saying “mosques, schools and public gatherings do not belong together”. among our goals.”

Pakistan’s Acting Information Minister, Murtaza Solangi, wrote about having “nothing to do with any religion”. ideology and ethics.

The State of Pakistan celebrates the birth of Prophet Muhammad on the 12th day of the third month of the Islamic calendar.

There was a public holiday, which began with gun salutes in Islamabad and provincial capitals, and public spaces were decorated with colorful lights. Scholars from almost all schools of thought agree on commemorating this day. Processions take place, many of them organized by the Barelvi Sunni school of thought to which the majority in Pakistan adhere.

However, some religious movements disagree with the organization of the procession, saying there is no evidence

  • Sweden gangs: Army to assist police following spike in homicides

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that the Swedish army is stepping in to support police in the fight against a recent surge of gang killings.

He said starting next week, the military will begin providing analytical and logistical support, as well as explosives disposal and forensic work.

Mr Kristersson added that Swedish law also needed to be updated to allow for greater military involvement.

So far this month, 12 people have died in gang violence in the country.

This is the highest number since December 2019, according to Dagens Nyheter newspaper. On Wednesday night alone, two young men were shot dead in Stockholm and a woman – who police said had no links to organized crime – was killed in an explosion at her home about 10 miles from the capital. 50 miles north.

The 24-year-old woman, named by local media as Soha Saad, was a newly qualified teacher and believed to be a neighbor of the blast target.

Kristersson made the announcement after crisis talks on Friday with Swedish army chief Micael Biden, police chief Anders Thornberg and Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer.

He added that the government would ask the military to support the police “in case the specialized skills of the armed forces could be useful”.

“It could be a few things:
explosives and helicopter logistics support, analytical skills… Computer forensic analysis.

The Prime Minister added that the country’s current laws need to be changed to deal with “gray zone situations where it is unclear what type of threat Sweden faces”.
Swedish media have linked the recent increase in deaths to a conflict involving a gang known as the Foxtrot network, which has been rocked by infighting and split into two rival factions. enemy.

On Thursday, Kristersson said Sweden had never seen anything like it before and “no other country in Europe” had encountered this situation.

Children and innocent bystanders are increasingly becoming victims of this violence, he emphasized.

Last year, more than 60 people died in shootings in Sweden – the highest number ever recorded – and this year the toll looks set to be even greater, if not worse. An official government report released in 2021 indicated that 4 people per million die in shootings in Sweden each year, compared with 1.6 people per million in Europe.

Police say the violence is linked to poor integration of immigrants, the growing gap between rich and poor and drug use.

Mr. Kristersson’s centre-right minority government, which came to power last year with the support of the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, has so far failed to stop the violence.

He pledged to move towards stricter surveillance, tougher penalties for breaches of gun laws, stronger deportation powers and stop and search zones – with an emphasis on the fact that ” Everything has been considered.”

Some critics argue that these measures do not address underlying social problems such as child poverty and underfunding of community services.

  • Group to protest against police over #OccupyJulorbiHouse demo assault on Oct 15

The Anchoring Democracy Advocacy Movement Ghana (ADAM-GH) has officially informed the Ghana Police Service and the Minister of Interior of its intention to conduct a peaceful protest against the law enforcement agency on October 15, 2023.

The objective of this protest is to bring attention to the arrests and detentions of citizens during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration, which has been widely criticized as unlawful.

The group emphasized that citizens are only required to notify the police, who, in turn, should provide necessary protection. However, they contend that the police failed to fulfill this obligation.

ADAM-GH stressed citizens’ continuous right to demonstrate without needing permission from the Police or any other state institution.

Furthermore, the demonstration seeks to raise awareness about eight innocent Ghanaians who lost their lives during the 2020 general elections, with no action taken to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Additionally, the protest aims to shed light on allegations made by Assin Central Member of Parliament and New Patriotic Party flagbearer aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong, suggesting that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is aware of the killers of undercover Journalist Ahmed Suale.

It also aims to address concerns about selective justice within the police force.

ADAM-GH shared the proposed route and activities for the day, which include starting at Obra Spot at Circle, moving through the Sankara interchange to the Ministry of Interior to submit a petition, proceeding to Police headquarters to submit another petition to the Inspector General of Police, and addressing the media in the police inner court.

  • Your silence is ‘unfortunate’ – CHRAJ to Kan Dapaah, others on assault against #OccupyJulorbiHouse protestors

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has criticised the ministers responsible for the country’s security for their silence regarding the alleged brutality inflicted on protesters during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration.

Joseph Whittal, the Commissioner of CHRAJ, pointed out that the Ministers of Defence, National Security, and the Interior have not issued any statements regarding the events of the protest.

He emphasized that this lack of communication does not foster public trust and consensus.

During the past week, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Accra for a three-day anti-government protest, expressing their concerns about the current economic difficulties and alleging corruption within the government. The protesters, who were unarmed, were met with excessive police force on Thursday, September 21, resulting in the arrest of nearly 50 protesters, including journalists.

The incident generated outrage among some Ghanaians who accused the police of using disproportionate force against unarmed civilians.

Mr Whittal therefore said in an interview that the police misconducted themselves, stating that “the security agencies [must] get to know that the power to protect the citizens has been given by the citizens. Communicating with them on matters of even national security is even possible; there is nothing wrong with it.”

“But for the Minister for the Interior, Minister of Defence, and Minister of National Security, we have not heard from them in respect of what has gone on. It is a bit unfortunate,” he stated.

The Police Management Board (POMAB) has summoned the Accra Regional Police Commander, COP Sayibu Gariba, to provide explanations regarding the police’s use of force during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration, where protesters were brutalized.

Sources within the Police Service have indicated that the Police Service is treating the matter seriously and has initiated an inquiry into the incident. A comprehensive investigation will be conducted.

The Police Service has also issued an apology to the public for any inconvenience caused during the three-day protests.

  • Police and army chiefs called in by Sweden’s prime minister

Sweden’s State leader Ulf Kristersson said he will meet the public armed force and police bosses on Friday to battle a flood in pack viciousness, as the nation staggers from record shooting passings this month.

“Tomorrow I will meet the public police boss and the president to perceive how the guard power can help the police in their neutralize the groups of thugs,” Kristersson said in a location to the country on Thursday.

“I trust all gatherings in the Swedish parliament can meet up on the side of major areas of strength for those example breaking moves that should be made.”

The Scandinavian country has been shaken by a record number of shootings this month, in the midst of a spread of group viciousness from bigger metropolitan regions to more modest towns, Reuters revealed.

There were 11 firearm killings in September, making it the deadliest month since December 2019. Police said around 30,000 individuals in Sweden are straightforwardly associated with or have connections to posse wrongdoing, as per the news office.

On Wednesday, three individuals – two men and a lady – were killed in only 12 hours in occurrences connected with group brutality close to the Swedish capital, Stockholm, Swedish police told CNN.

Kids and blameless individuals are impacted by the serious viciousness, Kristersson added.

“I can’t stress enough the way that serious the circumstance is. Sweden has seen nothing like it, no other country in Europe is encountering anything like this,” the Swedish head of the state said.

“We will chase the groups, and we will overcome the packs. We will prosecute them. On the off chance that they’re Swedish residents they will be secured for quite a while in jail and on the off chance that they are unfamiliar residents, they will likewise be removed.”

  • Police manhunt 2 accused of killing woman said to be a witch

The Police have initiated a manhunt for two siblings who are alleged to have murdered a 60-year-old woman in Janga, located in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.

The victim, Musah Azaratu Poanaa, was fatally shot by the suspects, who accused her of practicing witchcraft and being responsible for misfortunes within the community.

The two individuals, identified as Sumani Abila and Fataw Sumani, purportedly attributed their father’s illness in the community to the deceased after consulting a traditional healer.

Consequently, they forcibly entered her residence, pulled her from her room, and shot her with a single-barrel gun, according to information obtained by Graphic Online.

After the attack, she was promptly taken to the Walewale Municipal Hospital, but upon her arrival, medical professionals pronounced her deceased.

According to findings from Graphic Online, the North East Regional Police Command has initiated a manhunt for the suspects, who are presently evading capture.

Musah Asana, the daughter of the deceased, recounted the incident, stating that she was inside the room with her siblings on Sunday morning when the two siblings forcibly entered their residence and began firing warning shots.

She added that “they dragged my mother out of the room and shot her after accusing her of trying to kill their father”.

The North East Regional Minister, Yidana Zakaria, has strongly denounced the incident and has called for a prompt investigation to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

He characterized the incident as barbaric and a violation of human rights, urging individuals in the region to refrain from such acts.

  • Brutal police statement of British man’s death by stabbing in Portugal

The police in Portugal said that a British engineer stabbed and killed another person at a festival. After being arrested, the engineer did something disrespectful to the person’s body.

A 27-year-old man named Josh James Menkens was sent to prison yesterday after being asked about the death of a 37-year-old British man. The British man died after a music event organized by Menkens at a distant community in Portugal.

The detectives did not say anything about the investigation after other British people told them about the very horrible crime.

However, in a very detailed statement last night, they explained how Menkens, who is from Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire, is accused of hiding his victim’s body after brutally attacking him in a forest near the location of the four-day festival known as the Mad Hatters’ Tea Party.

At first, it was believed that the person died while playing a dangerous game called Blue Whale. However, the investigators later confirmed that this was not the cause of death.

The alarm was raised on Sunday morning when some people from England went to a police station in a town called Figueiró dos Vinhos in Portugal.

The police say that they have arrested a man in the town of Soalheira. He is accused of killing someone and disrespecting a dead body. The police had help from the Pedrogao Grande police force.

The person who was accused of a crime is from another country and they planned a party on a remote piece of land. They took the person who was harmed to a forest area that was far away from other people. They had a knife and used it to harm the person with very strong force, stabbing them in many different areas of the body, which led to their death.

After the suspect killed someone, they hid the body by using branches from trees and clothes.
Here is a simplified version of the text: The story goes on: ‘The person who was harmed was a man from another country who was 37 years old. He had come to Portugal to take part in the activity and it seems that he didn’t know the person being accused personally.

We don’t know why the crimes were committed yet, but it doesn’t seem like they have anything to do with games or online challenges.

The person who is 27 years old was at his first meeting with the judge where they decided to keep him in jail while they investigate.

The place where the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party happened is owned by Xavier Hancock, who went to public school, and his partner Arantxa Atauri from Spain.

There is no evidence that the couple had anything to do with the stabbing that happened early Sunday morning.

Earlier this week, Mr. Hancock mentioned that since this investigation is still ongoing, he will only respond to questions from the authorities whom we are working closely with.

‘If they show the proof, I might share the story. ’

A promotional advertisement for the festival said it would be a fun event with good music and friendly people. It asked people to be nice to themselves, each other, and the environment.

Tickets cost €50 (£43) and included four nights of camping at the event. However, guests were also given the choice to upgrade their accommodation to luxurious camping options called ‘glamping’, which could cost up to £120.

Investigators found a knife next to the dead body of the 37-year-old person. The body and the knife were left in a small open area in the forest.

There might have been an examination done on Monday in the city of Coimbra, but the findings have not been shared with the public.

A person who knew Menkens talked about how surprised he was when Menkens got arrested.

The person who owns a nature-based vacation place where the British person stayed to relax from their busy job said: “He stayed here for a week and afterwards we had a casual business relationship, where we tried to help each other find small independent work opportunities. ”

‘We were aware that he was from the UK and had a very hectic schedule, working 50 to 60 hours a week. He needed to take some time off and unwind. ‘

He said, “When I met him three years ago, I thought he was a really good guy in his mid-twenties. ”

We got along well, he liked our daughter and the animals on the farm, and he had a great time here.

‘He was a little man with a large smile, and he didn’t give off any signs of aggression. ‘
Josh’s dad, Troy, talked to Mail Online yesterday and said: ‘I got a surprise call from him late Sunday night. ‘

My son was speaking very fast and confusingly, talking nonstop and saying things to me. I was trying to stay relaxed and figure out where he was being kept and how I could go there.

The businessman from Australia said, “When I received a call, I was surprised and gathered my thoughts. I asked, ‘Where are you. Which police station. ‘” Then, I booked a flight and took a taxi there the following morning.

I didn’t know a lot about the festival. I knew he was coming for a festival but didn’t know any specific information about it. I wasn’t worried because he has never done anything to make me worried.

  • Your response against protesters has been disproportionate, leaves much to be desired – CHRAJ to Police

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has called upon the police and other law enforcement authorities to prioritize the establishment of a positive relationship with protesters.

Commissioner Joseph Whittal emphasized that by doing so, these agencies would be better equipped to understand and respect the rights of demonstrators, rather than viewing them as instigators of trouble, ultimately leading to smoother and more peaceful protest events.

According to the Commission, the “police’s response over the years against protesters has been disproportionate and leaves much to be desired.”

In a press release issued on Wednesday, September 27, the Commissioner, among others, also recommended that “law enforcement agencies in all their considerations must facilitate the realisation of the freedom of assembly and other protected rights unless restrictions are reasonably necessary in a democratic society.”

This comes after Organisers of the #OccupyJulorBiHouse protest, Democracy Hub, led by Oliver Barker-Vormawor on Thursday, September 21, 2023 began a three-day protest aimed at compelling the government to address the current economic hardships Ghanaians are facing.

On Day 1 of the demonstration, protestors were not able to do much as 49 individuals within the vicinity of the Jubilee House and the 37 Military Hospital area were arrested by the police for unlawful assembly, which the police said violated the Public Order Act.

This action followed an application filed by the police at the court on the eve of the protest to halt the demonstration.

Following the arrest, reports of assault against the protestors, including Ghanaian journalist Bridget Otoo, emerged on social media, with many citizens calling for calm and condemning the police.

24 hours later, there were reports that some protestors who were detained had been released. Media reports were not able to provide the specific number of protestors released.

Adding its voice to condemning the actions of the police, CHRAJ reminded the police that the Constitution grants citizens the freedom to assemble.

Following the protest, the Police Management Board (POMAB) has summoned COP Sayibu Gariba, the Accra Regional Police Commander, to provide explanations regarding the use of excessive force against participants in the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

Again, the police has expressed gratitude to members of the public, especially those in Accra, for their support and understanding while we worked within our mandate to maintain law and order during the demonstration.

The Service has also apologized to members of the public who were inconvenienced in one way or the other, especially those who were caught up in the vehicular holdups during the demonstration.

Meanwhile, the police has announced plans to meet with the organizers of the protest for a debriefing session with the aim of fostering a more fruitful engagement in the future.

The police still has our items – Protester who was arrested and released claims

A male protestor who has been released following his arrest by the police on Day 1 of the #OccupyJulorBiHouse protest has accused the police of confiscating his mobile phones despite gaining his freedom.

He then quickly added, “It is still with the police. It has not been returned yet. I still have my shirt with them. I have my cap with them and my two phones.”

According to him, he had been assured by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare that he would receive his items upon his arrival at the police’s central command, however, that was not the case.

“When I met the IGP, he said when I’m free I can go there for it. I got there (Central Command) and I was told that unless the regional command is present, they won’t give my items to me. I think apart from me and one other guy, everyone has gotten their devices,” he added.

He further narrated the maltreatment he and his comrades faced when they were detained by the Police.

“When we got to the regional command, we were instructed to sit on the floor, which we said we won’t because we don’t know why they hassled us to the bus.

“These Policemen without uniforms started attacking us. So they forcefully took our phones from us, pushed us into an office and started assaulting us. Dela Goldheart was slapped on the hand with a metal bar. It was a slub of metal.

One of our protestors was also slapped by a police officer inside the office and we couldn’t record any of this because we didn’t have our phones with us. They went as far as seizing my bank card, Ghana card,” he narrated.

Darko noted that he would be able to identify the officers if given the opportunity.

Police in Florida were surprised when they pulled over a car on a big road, only to find out that the person driving the car was a 10-year-old boy.

The boy and his 11-year-old sister were found in Alachua, which was far away from where their mother said they went missing earlier in the week.

The police said that the two people tried to run away after she took away their electronic devices.

“They were very surprised when they saw a 10-year-old boy driving a car and getting out with his sister,” the deputies reported.

The Alachua County Sheriff’s office said the traffic stop was dangerous and happened very late at night, at 03:50 local time (07:50 GMT) on Thursday.

The white car that the two people were traveling in was reported as missing by their mother in a city called North Port, Florida. North Port is more than 200 miles away from Alachua.

The police found out that both kids were mad at their mom because she took away their electronic devices. She did this because they were not using them correctly.

The police said that they didn’t think they were being treated badly at home.

The kids’ mom drove for three hours in the direction of Alachua to pick up her children.

The police talked to the mother for a long time. She was trying her best to take care of her two kids. She listened to the advice the police gave her about getting help.
