Ghanaian player in police grips after allegedly murdering two policemen

Ghanaian footballer, Ganiu Iddrisu, has been placed in police custody for his alleged involvement in the shooting deaths of two police officers at East Trasacco on May 2, 2024.

Alongside Iddrisu, four other suspects, including a gardener, a public servant, and an Arabic translator, were also apprehended.

During the court proceedings on May 8, 2024, Chief Inspector Margaret Ofori Boadi presented the case’s details, stating that the accused individuals, along with others still at large, conspired to commit the murders of the two off-duty police officers.

The suspects were identified as Mohammed Alhassan Damba, Chinkor Abdullah Alhassan, Alex Appoh, Bright Nana Kwame Owusu, and Ganiu Iddrisu.

The incident allegedly occurred around 6:30 pm on May 2, near the Hakska Block Factory at East Trasacco, East Legon, Accra.

Chief Inspector Boadi requested the court remand the accused individuals while investigations continued.

In response, the counsel for the accused argued for bail, highlighting jurisdictional issues and claiming wrongful arrest.

However, the trial magistrate, Prince Osei Owusu, declined bail due to jurisdictional constraints and advised the defence counsel to seek bail through appropriate channels.

The case was adjourned to May 20, 2024, for further proceedings.

  • I have lost 6 policemen, 8 soldiers, 15 bodyguards who used to work for me – Obinim

I have lost 6 policemen, 8 soldiers, 15 bodyguards who used to work for me – Obinim

Head pastor of the International God’s Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim, expressed his nostalgia for the privileges he once enjoyed as a pastor.

He shared that in the past, his security detail included six (6) policemen, eight (8) soldiers, and fifteen (15) bodyguards who accompanied him everywhere to ensure his protection.

However, he noted that the current situation is different, and he now either travels with a fellow pastor or walks alone during his trips.

In a TikTok live session monitored by GhanaWeb, Bishop Daniel Obinim advised the public to be cautious with their lives, especially when experiencing success and financial prosperity.

“People are saying they like the current Obinim. Brother, what I have gone through in life, that I am not in the limelight anymore, is a lot. Right now, when I am walking, no one follows me. There is no soldier or bodyguard apart from my driver, Pastor Raymond.

“Previously, I was followed by 6 policemen, 8 soldiers, national security, Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) officials, and 15 bodyguards, but today, where are they? No more. I walk alone or with my pastor,” he said.

Obinim is not as vocal in the public sphere as he once was, though it is unknown why he would make such assertions.

  • 80 Prison officers failed to show up for work on the day terror suspect Daniel Khalife escaped

80 Prison officers failed to show up for work on the day terror suspect Daniel Khalife escaped

On the day Daniel Khalife escaped from HMP Wandsworth, 80 prison officers did not come to work.

Khalife, who is 21 years old, was kept in jail at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

He got away from Wandsworth Prison on September 6 by tying himself to the bottom of a food delivery truck.

Khalife got arrested and taken off a bike last Saturday on a path near a canal in West London. This happened because a police officer who was not wearing a uniform saw him.

The number of people who were not at work on September 6 is 39% of all the workers, as reported by justice minister Damian Hinds.

Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, the Member of Parliament for Tooting from the Labour Party, inquired about the number of shift slots and the percentage of unfilled slots at Wandsworth Prison on a specific date.

Mr Hinds said that on September 6, 2023, there were 1,594 prisoners being kept at HMP Wandsworth.

Band 3 Prison No. 125 On that day, jail officers showed up for their shift. This equals 61% of the workers who are expected to attend.

‘On that day, 80 officers failed to show up for their scheduled duty at the prison.’

According to the Conservative MP for East Hampshire, staffing levels at the jail were still over the bare minimum necessary, and on the day in issue, every employee in the gatehouse and kitchen was on duty.

He continued, “The staffing level was not found to be a contributing factor” in the preliminary examination into Khalife’s escape.

  • Six officers suspended after shooting a teenager in Manila

Six officers suspended after shooting a teenager in Manila

Six police officers in the Philippine capital are under criminal investigation for shooting and killing a boy they believed to be a murder suspect.

Jerhode Baltazar, who had been shot in the head, drowned in a fishing town outside of Manila.

As officers tried to take him into custody, he panicked and dove into the ocean.

Authorities acknowledged that the policemen‘s decision to kill the unarmed 17-year-old was a “lapse in judgement” given the circumstances.

They are unable to use self-defense. According to local news, Navotas city police commander Col. Allan Umipig, “They were unable to demonstrate that the victim resisted arrest.”

What made police think the adolescent was the individual they were looking for was not immediately clear. They were assigned to apprehend a suspect in a different shooting that had also occurred in Navotas.

The six officers have been suspended from duty and are being held while authorities look into the possibility that they could be charged with homicide, a crime that in the Philippines carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail.

Local news organisations have prominently covered the shooting.

The victim’s father, Jesse Baltazar, was shown on social media footage hugging his son’s body after it had been pulled from the ocean.

Mr. Balazar questioned why, despite the police officers’ claims that they had only fired warning shots, his son had been shot in the head.

Through a video chat, the victim’s mother, who works in Qatar, saw her son’s coffin. She admitted to local media that she never expected her son’s funeral would be the subject of her subsequent payment.

Jeraldine Tolentino, the victim’s sister, also revealed to the local media that she turned down a 50,000 peso ($1,000; £698) bribe to stop the family from pursuing the case.

Authorities in the Philippines have recently refuted claims that suspects in crimes, notably those connected to illegal drugs, have been killed extrajudicially. They’ve refuted any misconduct.

During the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte, whose term expired in mid-2022, reports of summary executions of suspected criminals who allegedly resisted arrest rose. The International Criminal Court, which he has refused to recognise, is looking into him. Currently retired, Mr. Duterte resides in Davao City.

His opponents claim that his zealous approach to combating crime has encouraged police wrongdoing. However, he has defended his most well-known programme as essential for protecting Filipinos from street violence.

Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Duterte’s successor, has scaled back his anti-drug crusade. State actors have been charged with taking part in high-profile homicides, including the murder of journalist Percival Mabasa in November 2022.

The Police suspected that these young men could be part of the people who attacked the Chief’s Palace and therefore decided to stop them but they defied the Police and sped off.

The Police gave them a wild chase and captured them some 200 meteres close to the Terchire Police station and handcuffed them. A few minutes after they were arrested and handcuffed, thirteen young men came to the scene and demanded the release of the two arrested young men but the Police stood their ground and insisted they will not release the arrested suspects.

A scuffle ensued between the Police and the thirteen men and unfortunately, Police Corporal Philip Sion discharged his firearm on one of the men. He was attacked by the thirteen men. The Police officer was hit on the back of his neck with a club and fell and he was pounced on whiles Constable Bernard Amoah struggled with others over the release of the two handcuffed men.

Sensing danger, the Police ran for cover to the Terchire Health Center where they received treatment.

Meanwhile, when a reinforcement team arrived from the District Command, it combed through health facilities in the area where they met one of the suspects called Bilari Fuseini receiving treatment while Mutakiro Fuseini had been pronounced dead.

Police are currently on a manhunt for the remaining suspects.
