N/R: Gunmen open fire in Kukpalgu, kill pregnant woman

A tragic shooting in Kukpalgu, located in the Tatale-Sanguli District of the Northern Region, has left a pregnant woman dead and two others injured.

The victims were reportedly returning from a prayer meeting when unknown gunmen ambushed and opened fire on them.

Reports that the pregnant woman was hit in the stomach and died instantly. The other two victims sustained serious injuries—one was shot in the hand, while the other suffered a gunshot wound that pierced through her back and exited her chest.

They were initially treated at a herbal facility in Gbande before being transferred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for further care.

While the motive for the attack remains unclear, suspicions among residents point to recent political tensions. Some believe the shooting may be tied to the appointment of a non-Dagomba as District Chief Executive (DCE), a decision that has sparked frustration among locals who had hoped for a native appointee.

The publication of the latest list of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) has already stirred unrest in parts of the region, with Zabzugu emerging as one of the flashpoints. This recent violence has deepened fears in the community, already shaken by past incidents.

Just three months ago, on February 20, 2025, a deadly clash between hunters and farmers in the area claimed one life and injured several others. Despite efforts by community leaders and mediators to restore calm, the latest attack has reignited anxieties.

In response, residents are calling on the District Security Committee (DISEC) and the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to launch a thorough investigation and take concrete steps to address the root causes of the recurring violence.

Many are now pleading for a long-term solution to prevent the region from sliding further into instability.

  • Pregnant protester arrest claims are untrue – Police

Pregnant protester arrest claims are untrue – Police

The Ghana Police Service has issued a clarification regarding Gloria Vera Louise, who was among those arrested during the Democracy Hub demonstration.

Contrary to earlier reports claiming she was four months pregnant at the time of her arrest and subsequent two-week remand, the police have confirmed that she is not pregnant.

In a statement, the police stated that medical examinations conducted at independent health facilities verified Gloria’s non-pregnant status.

Additionally, they mentioned that no visible signs of pregnancy were observed during her arrest.

“In the case of the alleged pregnant woman, Gloria Vera Louise, We would like to clarify that at the time of the arrest, there was no visible indication that she was pregnant. Additionally, at no point during the arrest or subsequent interactions did the said suspect inform the Police of a pregnancy. Again, there was no communication to the court of any such condition, either by herself or through her lawyers.

“In order to establish the veracity or otherwise of the claim in the public domain of the alleged pregnancy, the Police took the initiative and sent her to the Police Hospital and an independent health facility for a thorough medical examination. Both medical results came out negative, suggesting that Gloria Vera Louise, is not pregnant as claimed.”

The Office of the Attorney General previously voiced disappointment over Gloria’s lawyers for not disclosing her alleged pregnancy during the bail hearing.

In related news, the police have also filed charges against Grace Asantewaa, who is accused of endangering a child during a recent demonstration.

“The Ghana Police Service has charged Grace Asantewaa with the offence of exposing a child to danger, by bringing her to the demonstration grounds, contrary to section 71 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

“We would like to use this opportunity to advise members of the public to be mindful of involving our beloved children in activities that have the potential to expose them to danger.”

Between September 21 and 23, the police detained 54 protesters on various charges.

According to a JoyNews report, the victim, whose identity remains protected, was ambushed by the armed men alongside her husband. The attackers subjected her to a horrific ordeal, taking turns raping her and leaving her severely traumatized.

In addition to the assault on the woman, her husband was also brutally beaten by the assailants, who then stole their mobile phones and motorbike.

The couple had been returning from a hospital check-up in Nalerigu when the attack occurred on the Gambaga-Dagbireboare Road.

Speaking to JoyNews, the victim’s grandfather confirmed the incident, revealing that his granddaughter was so traumatized she had to be rushed back to the hospital for immediate treatment.

  • Pregnant woman decides to sell unborn son

Pregnant woman decides to sell unborn son

A pregnant Ghanaian woman has revealed her intentions to exchange her unborn baby for money.

In an interview with Crime Check Tv, the woman, identified as Godsway, explained that she has decided to sell the baby for 1.5 million Ghana cedis to meet the financial needs of the child and her existing four children, as she is a single mother.

Godsway’s heartless decision stems from her concerns about her inability to support the baby before and after birth.

After confiding in someone about her predicament, she was advised to visit Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where doctors could recommend her to individuals interested in buying babies.

“Facing financial hardship, I considered selling my unborn son to ensure his well-being. At Korle Bu, I encountered individuals who were willing to refer me to a doctor and provide financial assistance after childbirth. Advised to speak with a doctor about my situation, I declined the offer of free delivery and was directed to another department.

“In this department, a doctor offered to pay me 1.5 billion Ghana cedis, but I expressed dissatisfaction, understanding that the usual payment for a boy is 4 or 5 billion, and for a girl, it’s 2.5 billion cedis. Despite the financial strain and my initial willingness, my firstborn threatened to disown me if I proceeded with such a decision.

“Being the sole caregiver for my children, this pregnancy has hindered my ability to work as before. The fear of being unable to provide for my baby and his four siblings weighs heavily on me, especially considering my husband’s neglectful role as a father dealing in PoP.”

Despite being offered free delivery by a female doctor at the hospital, Godsway declined, stating that she wouldn’t be able to care for the baby after birth,” She added.

She was then referred to another doctor who agreed to accept her offer but demanded 1.5 billion Ghana cedis.

The desperate woman reluctantly agreed to the amount, even though she wasn’t satisfied, revealing that individuals purchasing babies typically do not pay less than 5 billion Ghana cedis.

  • More than 50% of Ghanaian pregnant women suffering from Anaemia – GSS

More than 50% of Ghanaian pregnant women suffering from Anaemia – GSS

A recent study undertaken by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has indicated that more than half of pregnant women in the country suffer from anaemia, contrasting with 40 percent of non-pregnant women.

The findings, outlined in the 2022 Demographic and Health Survey, highlight the prevalence of anaemia among children aged 6-59 months in households, with the highest rates observed in the Northern region at 69 percent and Ahafo at 35 percent.

Notably, the survey reflects a decline in anaemia prevalence among children since 2008 when it peaked at 78 percent.

Anaemia among adults, known for its adverse health effects like fatigue and lethargy, remains a significant concern, particularly among pregnant women, as it can contribute to heightened maternal mortality and unfavorable birth outcomes.

The report also sheds light on the frequency of caesarean operations, revealing that urban areas exhibit a higher incidence (27 percent) compared to rural areas (15 percent). Approximately 21 percent of live births in the two years preceding the survey were delivered through caesarean operations.

In terms of HIV knowledge, the survey uncovered that two percent of women aged 15–49 engaged in sexual activity with multiple partners in the year leading up to the survey.

Of this group, only 12 percent reported using condoms during their last sexual encounter. Similarly, 15 percent of men aged 15–49 acknowledged having multiple sexual partners, with 18 percent of them using condoms during their last sexual activity.

Dr. Chris Opoku Fofie, Deputy Director in Charge of Reproductive and Child Health at the Ghana Health Service, emphasized the significance of the survey in providing timely information for authorities to develop comprehensive policies addressing identified issues. Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, Director-General of the Ghana Aids Commission, called for the creation of an enabling legal policy to tackle the HIV/AIDS challenge.

The survey, the seventh of its kind conducted in Ghana since 1988, aimed to furnish data for monitoring population and health dynamics. It involved a nationally representative sample of 15,014 women aged 15–49 in 17,933 households and 7,044 men aged 15–49 in half of the selected households, achieving a remarkable response rate of 98 percent among women and 97 percent among men.

Funding for the survey was provided by various organizations, including USAID, UNICEF, UNFPA, the World Bank, the Global Fund, KOICA, the World Health Organization, and the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.

  • Reasons women’s nose grows bigger during pregnancy

Reasons women’s nose grows bigger during pregnancy

A common belief is that a woman’s nose grows bigger during pregnancy, but this notion is mostly a misconception. While some changes do occur during pregnancy, they don’t typically result in a larger nose. Here’s what might be happening:

    1. Nasal Congestion: Many pregnant women experience nasal congestion or stuffiness, often referred to as “pregnancy rhinitis.” Hormonal changes can cause the blood vessels in the nasal passages to swell, leading to congestion. This can make the nose feel stuffier and potentially give the illusion of a slightly larger nose.
    2. Increased Blood Volume: During pregnancy, a woman’s blood volume increases significantly to support the growing fetus. This can lead to increased blood flow throughout the body, including the nose. The nasal tissues may become more engorged, contributing to the feeling of nasal congestion.
    3. Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy hormones, particularly estrogen, can affect the body in various ways. While they don’t directly cause the nose to grow larger, they can lead to changes in the skin and connective tissues. Some women might notice their skin becoming more sensitive or experiencing changes in skin texture, but this is not exclusive to the nose.
    4. Gestational Rhinitis: Some women may develop a condition called “gestational rhinitis,” which is characterized by nasal congestion and a runny or stuffy nose during pregnancy. It’s a temporary condition that usually resolves after childbirth.

It’s essential to note that any apparent changes in the size or appearance of the nose during pregnancy are generally subtle and temporary. They are related to fluid retention, increased blood flow, and hormonal fluctuations, rather than actual growth of the nose.

If you experience discomfort due to nasal congestion during pregnancy, you can try saline nasal sprays or humidifiers to alleviate symptoms. However, if you have concerns about unusual changes or symptoms during pregnancy, it’s advisable to consult your healthcare provider for a proper evaluation and guidance.

GHS attributes rise in teenage pregnancy in Ahafo Ano to high cost of sanitary pads

The Health Director at the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region, Dr. Rubben Bedzra, has attributed rise in teenage pregnancy in Ahafo Ano to high cost of sanitary pads.

According to him, some teenagers in the district got pregnant for chasing over a Gh¢20.00 money for sanitary pad.

According to him, most of the teenagers who reported to health facilities in the district after interrogations disclosed that, they succumbed to proposals from men in order to get money for sanitary pads during their Menstrual period.

Dr. Bedzra disclosed this on the Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM’s morning show Nyansapo, on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 hosted by Captain Koda.

“While the causes of teenage pregnancies in the area are many, one of the problems which runs through almost all victims was poverty, most of the teenagers who confided in us said they were forced into bed after the men provided them with sanitary pads for a period of time,” he stated.

  • Connecticut woman gives birth on flight, here’s what was listed as baby’s place of birth

A pregnant Connecticut woman who was six weeks due unexpectedly gave birth to her son during a September flight to the Dominican Republic. In an interview with WFSB, Kendria Rhoden said she was sleeping on the flight when her son decided it was time to be welcomed into the world.

“Everything just happened so fast, it just happened so quick,” Rhoden recalled. “While I was asleep I felt someone kick me in my stomach and then my water broke.”

Rhoden was eventually helped by nurses who were on the flight. But her delivery did not take that long. “They were like ‘oh don’t push, don’t push because we don’t see any head,’” Rhoden recalled. “I’m like ‘the babies [sic] coming!’”

Rhoden decided to name her son Skylen to represent his unexpected place of birth. Following his birth, the mother and son ended up remaining in the Dominican Republic for a few weeks. But they experienced some setbacks. They eventually returned to the United States where little Skylen was evaluated at a hospital.

“I feel good now because I’m home and he’s safe, he’s where he needs to be right now,” said Rhoden. “So, I would say I’m happier than I was in the Dominican Republic.”

Skylen’s place of birth on his passport was listed as “in the air.”

  • For women: 5 things you should know before getting pregnant

Preparing for pregnancy means getting yourself as healthy as possible physically and mentally.

Experts say that planning for a successful pregnancy should involve a health check. There are things you can do now before you try for a baby that will affect your fertility and the health of your baby.

The best way to have kids who grow up to be stable adults is to lay the plan even before they are conceived.

You really need to consider different factors before you get pregnant so you know whether you’re truly ready to bring a child into this world or not.

There is a long list of factors to think about, but here are a few to help you get started.

    • Your weight matters

Many people like to argue about beauty standards when it comes to weight but it goes far deeper than just looks if you want to have kids.

The fact is that being underweight can cause complications for you and your baby, and the case is the same if you’re obese.

A healthy weight can vary depending on your body and that is why you should confirm what a healthy weight is for you beforehand.

    • You need a general check-up

Many of us look healthy on the outside but have conditions we aren’t fully aware of on the inside. Very few people manage to go for checkups often then when you get pregnant and go for one, you realize that there is an issue going on.

Make sure you visit your gynaecologist and your general practitioner before getting pregnant. This is to make sure you’re ready, and for peace of mind as well.

Some people have made the mistake of assuming that their mental health problems will disappear once a baby comes. A baby can make you happier, but they are not a solution for an already existing problem.

Poor mental health won’t allow you to raise your child the right way. This can also affect your child’s life, which is totally unfair.

Therefore, go for counselling if you have any concerns you’ve never dealt with first before making this life-changing decision.

    • You must be financially ready

Getting caught up in baby-making season is a real thing. You never know when it might strike and when you’re in that state, you might not be thinking realistically about your financial situation and whether you can support a child for the next 18 years or possibly more.

The financial struggle has been one of the biggest challenges for parents and part of that is caused by poor financial planning. Do your research properly to get a realistic perspective of how much it costs to raise a child first so that you don’t cause unnecessary struggle in your child’s life and yours.

    • Your relationship should be stable enough

It’s also common for couples to get kids when they’re not in a healthy place. And that dysfunctional foundation is probably the root reason why so many adults struggle with all sorts of mental health problems.

The structure that has been healthy for generations is having kids when you’re married. And even when you are married, make sure you’ve addressed any issues to avoid stress during and after your pregnancy.

  • Residents of Boayini to boycott 2024 elections if their road is not fixed

Chief, community elders, and youth of Boayini, a farming community in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region are demanding immediate action from the government to fix their deplorable road network in the area.

The community which has over 3,000 inhabitants says they cannot access the West Mamprusi Municipal capital, Walewale, without passing through Langbinsi in the East Mamprusi Municipality due to the inaccessibility nature of the road linking Walewale.

The residents who organized communal labor to fix some dangerous potholes on the road are lamenting the negligence of the government to get the road fixed over the past years.

The residents reiterated that pregnant women and people with other health complications are bearing the brunt of the unmemorable state of the road whenever they want to access quality healthcare in any of the hospitals in the region.

In an interview during the communal labor organized by the residents, the spokesman for the Chief of the community, Mba Kadri Kofi declared that they will boycott the upcoming 2024 national elections if the road is not constructed.

“I will like to be on my knees to appeal to the government to come to our rescue. We have been neglected. They promised to provide us with electricity but they have failed. Look at the poles erected there. The abandoned footbridge is about washing away. We will like to declare our intention to boycott the 2024 elections unless our road is fixed. So we will not vote again unless our demands are materialized,” he lamented.

The recent rains have eroded the road making it difficult for road users to use unless they apply wisdom. The residents say the situation has been an opportunity for armed robbers to be attacking them.

The Assemblyman for the Mimima electoral area, Hon Aziz Adingana says the MCE and MP promised to fix it but have failed them.

“I met with the MCE and the MP as of 2021 December, if you check into our executive committee meeting it was a recommendation that Boayini road should be worked on but when we met this year, I consulted and they said there are no funds so we decided to organize a communal labor,” he said.

The women were helping their husbands to fill the potholes by carrying head pans after fueling a tractor to dig the gravel for them.

  • 200 pregnant women undergo free scan, receive medication

More than 200 pregnant women in the Anyaa Sowutoum Constituency yesterday benefited from a free pregnancy scan organised by the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Dr Dickson Adomako-Kissi.

In addition, the women also received free blood supplements and education on caesarian section from some specialists of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Speaking in interview with the Ghanaian Times, the MP said the exercise formed part of his initiative to offer the women opportunity to seek medical attention on any bordering health issues.

He said women’s health was paramount with regards to the Sustainable Development Goal Three which was targeted at reducing one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being.

“It is in line with this, that today, I decided to use the holiday for free pregnancy scan so that we can pick up some of the issues and diagnose them for proper treatment,” he added.

Dr Adomako-Kisi said some pregnant women often times were faced with pregnancy challenges such as pains, ectopic, abnormalities in the baby head size, shape, missing a limp among others which most of them could not afford in diagnosing and so was important they went through routine exercises such as that.

He advised the pregnant women to desist from patronising prayer houses and visiting their hometowns for delivery to avoid complications.

Dr Adomako-Kissi decried the increasing cases of pregnant women who patronised prayer houses and faith-based centres to assist them during deliveries saying that it made their work difficult.

“I have advised them on the spiritual aspect because pastors and reverends are stakeholders in this work and sometimes make our work difficult because they do not encourage the women to take medical advice but only the spiritual advice. However, we can work hand in hand to ensure that there is no premature mortality,” he stated.

He stressed the need for pregnant women to register at approved hospitals for ante-natal care to ensure safe delivery.

Dr Adomako-Kissi promised to impact his community positively on health related issues and assured of establishing a district hospital to cater for the health needs of the constituents.

Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the MP saying it was timely due to some health challenges they were unable to access the health centres due to financial crisis.

“I am very happy for the gesture because some of us might have not had the opportunity or money to go through all these he has done for free. We appreciate it and say God richly bless him for thinking about pregnant women,” Mrs Deladem, a businesswoman said.

  • Seek regular antenatal care to prevent complications – Pregnant women urged

A midwife at the Sunyani Municipal Hospital (SMH), Ms. Vincentia Amponsah Nyarko has advised pregnant women to seek regular antenatal care from the early stages of their pregnancies to the delivery period to avoid complications.

She stressed that regular antenatal care would help to detect and prevent early complications that may occur during pregnancy and delivery hours.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani, Ms. Nyarko reminded pregnant women and nursing mothers to ensure proper personal hygiene in order not to contract the COVID-19 disease and prevent its spread.

She asked pregnant women to frequently eat the right proportion of balanced diet to boost their immune systems to enhance the health of their unborn babies.

She said the SMH between the midnight of Thursday, December 24 and 0600 hours of Saturday, December 26 of the Christmas festive season recorded 10 deliveries of which four were males and six were female.

Ms. Nyarko explained the delivery of a set of twins (male and female), and four other male babies were through caesarean sessions.

The remaining babies were through normal deliveries. The ages of their mothers were between 16 and 40 and the babies were in good health.

At the Sunyani Regional Hospital, a staff on duty told the GNA that six males and four females were delivered within the same period.

Six of them were through CS while four were born through deliveries. The ages of their mothers were between 19 and 35.

  • Pregnant teen dies after falling from US-Mexico border wall

A pregnant 19-year-old migrant from Guatemala died after trying to climb over a border fence in Texas, authorities said on Thursday. Doctors were not able to save her child.

United States media, quoting a statement from Guatemala’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reported that the woman, Miriam Estefany Giron Luna, fell on her back from the top of an 18-foot-high (5.5-metre) span of steel mesh fencing while trying to cross with the child’s father. Giron Luna, who was 30 weeks pregnant, died from her injuries on Tuesday.

Tekandi Paniagua, a Guatemalan consular official based in the state of Texas, told the Washington Post that new restrictions imposed by US President Donald Trump have been causing asylum seekers to take more risks and that since October, at least five other Guatemalans have suffered broken bones and other serious injuries after falling from the border wall.

“This is a very worrisome trend,” he told the Washington Post. “People are taking more and more risks, and they’re losing their lives.”

Trump, who has made a crackdown on immigration a central focus of his presidency and his re-election campaign, has put in place measures that have made it increasingly more difficult for migrants to apply for asylum in the US. At least 60,000 asylum seekers have been sent back to Mexico to wait while their cases are processed in the US under the Trump administration’s “Remain in Mexico” programme.

Meanwhile, during the 2019 fiscal year, US authorities took into custody more than 470,000 migrants who arrived amid a record influx of Central Americans who are fleeing violence, poverty and political persecution in their countries.

Those measures have led to a 75 percent drop in border detentions since May, US authorities say, even as the latest figures show a slight uptick in the number of single Mexican adults and unaccompanied minors attempting to cross.

With the addition of taller and more formidable barriers along the border, including more than 135 miles (217km) of new 30-foot-tall (nine-metre) border fencing the Trump administration has installed, smuggling organisations have been using improvised ladders to take migrants over the top.

The tactic requires migrants to cling to the top of the structure, then climb a ladder down the other side or slide down by wrapping their arms and legs around the steel.

According to the Washington Post report, Giron Luna was a social worker and a beauty pageant winner in her hometown in her country’s Quetzaltenango department. She reportedly slipped while trying to descend from the top of the barrier, landing on her back. The woman’s partner, Dilver Israel Diaz Garcia, 26, carried her away from the scene to seek help and encountered US Border Patrol agents, who radioed for an ambulance.

According to the newspaper, doctors in El Paso tried to deliver the child via Caesarean section, and Giron Luna underwent multiple surgeries before dying. Her partner, Diaz Garcia, remains in US Border Patrol custody, where he faces deportation.
