Manchester City, aiming for an unprecedented fourth consecutivePremier League title, will kick off their campaign with an away match against Burnley, managed by their former captain Vincent Kompany.
On the evening of August 11, the Treble-winning City side will visit Turf Moor to face Kompany’s newly-promoted team, marking the beginning of the 2023-24 season.
This encounter will be the second time Kompany, who led City to four title victories as captain, will face his former club as a manager. In their previous meeting during the FA Cup quarter-final in March, City emerged as dominant 6-0 victors at the Etihad Stadium.
Earlier this week Latics were served a winding-up petition by His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs over unpaid tax bills but, as a result of the takeover, all players and staff will be paid immediately, along with other creditors.
“I am delighted to become involved in Wigan Athletic Football Club. I was born in Wigan, I grew up locally and the community of the town is close to my heart,” said Danson.
“I want to recognise that the club has a hugely-important part to play in the local community, not just for players, but for fans, employees and all its suppliers, business partners and numerous community groups.
“We have worked hard to provide the EFL with a realistic financial plan to stabilise operations.
“We look forward to a fresh start for the club and planning for the upcoming season.”

Premier League debutants Luton will play their first top-flight fixture since 1992 away to Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton on August 12, having to wait until the following weekend for their first home game when Kenilworth Road will become the smallest ground to host a fixture in the competition for the visit of Burnley.
Fellow newcomers Sheffield United kick off their season with a home game against Crystal Palace.
The outstanding fixture of Matchday 1 will be at Stamford Bridge where Mauricio Pochettino begins life as Chelsea manager against Liverpool on Sunday, August 13, with both sides looking to bounce back after disappointing campaigns.
Arsenal, following an anticlimactic conclusion to last season’s title challenge, open at home to Nottingham Forest in Saturday’s lunchtime game, with fellow Champions League qualifiers Newcastle hosting Aston Villa that evening and Manchester United beginning against Wolves at Old Trafford on Monday, August 14.
Ange Postecoglou’s first game in charge of Tottenham will be away to Brentford at 2pm on August 13, Bournemouth open at home to Europa Conference League winners West Ham, and Everton, looking to avoid a third straight relegation scrap, begin at home to Fulham.
This is not a list of every Premier League side’s five biggest signings ever, but a collection of their five most recent transfer record buys.
And those things are different. So you can delete that comment now and get over yourself.
Arsenal, Burnley and Luton may all welcome new club-record signings soon. No current top-flight side made their most expensive buy longer ago than Man Utd.
ARSENAL
Andrei Arshavin – £15m (Zenit St Petersburg, February 2009)
Mesut Ozil – £42.5m (Real Madrid, September 2013)
Alexandre Lacazette – £46.5m (Lyon, July 2017)
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – £55.5m (Borussia Dortmund, January 2018)
Nicolas Pepe – £72m (Lille, August 2019)
Four of those players subsequently left on a free transfer; Nicolas Pepe’s Arsenal contract expires next year. An expensive new midfielder will sadly have arrived by then.
ASTON VILLA
Stewart Downing – £12m (Middlesbrough, July 2009)
Darren Bent – £18m (Sunderland, January 2011)
Wesley Moraes – £22m (Club Brugge, June 2019)
Ollie Watkins – £28m, rising to £33m (Brentford, September 2020)
Emi Buendia – £30m, rising to £38m (Norwich, June 2021)
How bizarre to think that Unai Emery made one Premier League club’s most recent record signing and it wasn’t Aston Villa. For a couple of reasons, that will change this summer.
BOURNEMOUTH
Tyrone Mings – £8m (Ipswich, June 2015)
Benik Afobe – £10m (Wolves, January 2016)
Jordon Ibe – £15m (Liverpool, July 2016)
Nathan Ake – £20m (Chelsea, June 2017)
Jefferson Lerma – £25m (Levante, August 2018)
Bournemouth bid farewell to Jefferson Lerma this summer having almost unseated him as the club’s record signing a few times. Dango Ouattara, Illya Zabarnyi and Hamed Traore all joined for upwards of £20m since January, but don’t quite make the cut.
BRENTFORD
Bryan Mbeumo – £5.85m (Troyes, August 2019)
Ivan Toney – £5m, rising to £10m (Peterborough, September 2020)
Kristoffer Ajer – £13.5m (Celtic, July 2021)
Keane Lewis-Potter – £16m, rising to £20m (Hull, July 2022)
Kevin Schade – £22m (Freiburg, July 2023)
That is pleasingly chronological from Brentford, proof of a club with their ducks in order. One statement signing every summer for the past five years would be even better if the last three end up matching the brilliance of the previous two.
BRIGHTON
Jose Izquierdo – £13.5m (Club Brugge, August 2017)
Jurgen Locadia – £14m (PSV, January 2018)
Alireza Jahanbakhsh – £17m (AZ Alkmaar, July 2018)
Adam Webster – £20m (Bristol City, August 2019)
Joao Pedro – £30m (Watford, May 2023)
Brilliant as Brighton are, their transfer strength has been in identifying rough diamonds from faraway lands to polish and move on for considerable profit. When spending big they can stumble, which makes Joao Pedro’s impending arrival all the more intriguing.
BURNLEY
Steven Defour – £7.3m (Anderlecht, August 2016)
Jeff Hendrick – £10.5m (Derby, August 2016)
Robbie Brady – £13m (Norwich, January 2017)
Chris Wood – £15m (Leeds, August 2017)
Ben Gibson – £15m (Middlesbrough, August 2018)
Vincent Kompany will be desperate to break this particular stranglehold soon, even if just to override the predictability of Burnley having a no-nonsense centre-half and a burly centre-forward share their title of most expensive player ever.
CHELSEA
Alvaro Morata – £58m (Real Madrid, July 2017)
Kepa Arrizabalaga – £71m (Athletic Bilbao, August 2018)
Kai Havertz – £75.8m (Leverkusen, September 2020)
Romelu Lukaku – £97.5m (Inter Milan, August 2021)
Enzo Fernandez – £106.8m (Benfica, February 2023)
There is a genuine case to say Enzo Fernandez is legitimately the best of those Chelsea signings, which reflects well on no-one. But Todd Boehly has continued that proud tradition of general waste.
CRYSTAL PALACE
Dwight Gayle – £4.5m (Peterborough, July 2013)
James McArthur – £7m (Wigan, September 2014)
Yohan Cabaye – £10m (PSG, July 2015)
Andros Townsend – £13m (Newcastle, July 2016)
Christian Benteke – £27m (Liverpool, August 2016)
A ludicrous fact: not a single one of those signings was made by Roy Hodgson. Crystal Palace presumably still regret giving Alan Pardew quite so much cash to spend.
EVERTON
Yakubu Aiyegbini – £11.3m (Middlesbrough, August 2007)
Marouane Fellaini – £15m (Standard Liege, September 2008)
Romelu Lukaku – £28m (Chelsea, July 2014)
Jordan Pickford – £30m (Sunderland, June 2017)
Gylfi Sigurdsson – £45m (Swansea, August 2017)
Not sure what to say about that. It would probably make the best five-a-side team of any club on this list.
Konstantinos Mitroglou – £12m (Olympiakos, January 2014)
Jean Michael Seri – £25m (Nice, July 2018)
Fulham do like to use their regular Premier League promotions to open new transfer doors.
LIVERPOOL
Fernando Torres – £20.2m (Atletico Madrid, July 2007)
Luis Suarez – £22.7m (Ajax, January 2011)
Andy Carroll – £35m (Newcastle, January 2011)
Mo Salah – £36.9m (Roma, June 2017)
Virgil van Dijk – £75m (Southampton, January 2018)
It is probably safe to suggest that Darwin Nunez has not activated enough add-ons to become Liverpool’s record signing just yet. That initial £65m fee paid to Benfica can rise as high as £85m, but not with nine Premier League goals.
LUTON
Steve White – £175,000 (December 1979, Bristol Rovers)
Paul Walsh – £400,000 (July 1982, Charlton)
Lars Elstrup – £850,000 (August 1989, Odense)
Simon Sluga – £1.3m (July 2019, HNK Rijeka)
Carlton Morris – £1.7m (July 2022, Barnsley)
Luton Town have been promoted to the Premier League. This is the away end entrance to their stadium. And it is oh so beautiful.
MANCHESTER CITY
Aymeric Laporte – £57.2m (Athletic Bilbao, January 2018)
Riyad Mahrez – £60m (Leicester, July 2018)
Rodri – £62.8m (Atletico Madrid, July 2019)
Ruben Dias – £64.3m (Benfica, September 2020)
Jack Grealish – £100m (Aston Villa, August 2021)
That is an unerringly brilliant record, whether the signings were instantly brilliant or they needed a year of traditional transitional year of Pep seasoning first.
MANCHESTER UNITED
Rio Ferdinand – £29.3m (Leeds, July 2002)
Dimitar Berbatov – £30.8m (Tottenham, September 2008)
Juan Mata – £37.1m (Chelsea, January 2014)
Angel di Maria – £59.7m (Real Madrid, August 2014)
Paul Pogba – £89.3m (Juventus, August 2016)
Fair play to Manchester United for accepting that their last two club-record signings were so catastrophic it would be foolish to try again. They have the longest-standing current Premier League transfer record.
NEWCASTLE
Alan Shearer – £15m (Blackburn, July 1996)
Michael Owen – £16m (Real Madrid, August 2005)
Miguel Almiron – £20m (Atlanta United, January 2019)
Joelinton – £40m (Hoffenheim, July 2019)
Alexander Isak – £58m, rising to £63m (August 2022)
The bad news: Faustino Asprilla (£6.7m, Parma, February 1996) has finally been dislodged from this list. The good news: Eddie Howe can either make very good signings, or make very bad signings look very good.
NOTTINGHAM FOREST
Britt Assombalonga – £5.5m (Peterborough, August 2014)
Joao Carvalho – £13.2m (Benfica, June 2018)
Taiwo Awoniyi – £17.2m (Union Berlin, June 2022)
Emmanuel Dennis – £20m (Watford, August 2022)
Morgan Gibbs-White – £25m, rising to £42.5m (August 2022)
A simply ludicrous first summer in decades as a promoted Premier League club saw Nottingham Forest break their transfer record three separate times, pushing Pierre van Hooijdonk (£4.5m, Celtic, March 1997), Kevin Campbell (£3m, Arsenal, July 1995) and Teddy Sheringham (£2m, Millwall, July 1991) out.
SHEFFIELD UNITED
Luke Freeman – £5m (QPR, July 2019)
Callum Robinson – £7m (Preston, July 2019)
Lys Mousset – £10m (Bournemouth, July 2019)
Oli McBurnie – £20m (Swansea City, August 2019)
Sander Berge – £22m (Genk, January 2020)
There is a chance that Rhian Brewster could trigger every clause Liverpool inserted into the deal which saw him leave in October 2020 – although that would presumably involve scoring a few actual goals and probably breaking into the England squad.
TOTTENHAM
Roberto Soldado – £26m (Valencia, August 2013)
Erik Lamela – £29m (Roma, August 2013)
Moussa Sissoko – £30m (Newcastle, September 2016)
Davinson Sanchez – £42m (Ajax, August 2017)
Tanguy Ndombele – £53.7m (Lyon, July 2019)
Again, Richarlison (£50m rising to £60m) is theoretically capable of usurping someone who will unfathomably become his teammate in pre-season, but Ange Postecoglou must coax some undisallowed goals out of the Brazilian first.
WEST HAM
Andre Ayew – £20.7m (Swansea, August 2016)
Marko Arnautovic – £25m (Stoke, August 2017)
Felipe Anderson – £36m (Lazio, July 2018)
Sebastien Haller – £45m (Eintracht Frankfurt, July 2019)
Lucas Paqueta – £51m (Lyon, August 2022)
One or both of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano probably belong here somewhere, but we’ve no sodding idea of their actual fees.
WOLVES
Rui Patricio – £16m (Sporting, June 2018)
Adama Traore – £18m (Middlesbrough, August 2018)
Raul Jimenez – £30m (Benfica, June 2019)
Fabio Silva – £35.6m (Porto, September 2020)
Matheus Nunes – £38m, rising to £42.2m (Sporting, August 2022)
After a notable eight-year stint with Leicester City in the English Premier League,Ghanaian defender Daniel Amartey has bid farewell to the club.
Amartey, who initially joined the Foxes in 2016 from FC Copenhagen in Denmark, experienced great success during his tenure, including winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Community Shield.
Throughout his time at the King Power Stadium, the 28-year-old center-back made over 150 appearances for the team.
Unfortunately, Leicester City faced relegation to the English Championship at the conclusion of the season.
Amartey’s departure has been officially confirmed by the club, making him one of seven players who will be leaving the team.
“Youri Tielemans, Çağlar Söyüncü, Daniel Amartey, Nampalys Mendy, Ryan Bertrand, Ayoze Pérez, and Tetê will all bring their spells at King Power Stadium to an end,” a statement on the club’s official website read.
Leicester City also stated it remained in discussion with captain, Jonny Evans regarding his future, with his contract due to expire later this month.
“…An option has been exercised to extend the contract of midfielder, Hamza Choudhury to June 2024,” the statement added.
Amartey has been linked with a move to Turkey’s Super Lig, with Besiktas reportedly interested in the Ghanaian international, as reported by SportsWorldGhana.
Amartey to join AC Milan?
Sports Brief also reported that Ghanaian defender, Amartey could join AC Milan in the summer transfer window, amid claims he had agreed to a deal with the Serie A club.
The 28-year-old’s contract with former Premier League champions, Leicester City ends this month and the centre-back is set for a move away from the King Power Stadium.
Amartey remains one of two members of the victorious Foxes team that shockingly won the English top flight title in 2016, alongside Jamie Vardy.
Amartey gifts ex-coach with car
Black Stars defender, Amartey returned a favour to a man who helped him ten years ago after gifting him a new car.
Sports Brief reported the Leicester City defender presented the car through ex-Ghanaian footballer, Awudu Issaka.
According to sports journalist, Saddick Adams, Amartey remembered the man for a gesture during his youth days.
Erling Haaland is thoroughly enjoying his inaugural season in English football with Manchester City and has made an intriguing revelation about his personal life away from the game.
Having joined City for a significant sum of £51m last summer, the Norwegian goal-scoring sensation wasted no time in adapting to his new surroundings, leaving an indelible mark on the Premier League in a manner rarely witnessed before.
Haaland shattered records by netting an astonishing 36 goals in the league, surpassing the achievements of all his counterparts in a single season. This extraordinary feat earned him the prestigious golden boot, as well as the titles of Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year.
Erling Haaland and manager Guardiola
He still has the opportunity of adding to the Premier League with the FA Cup final against Manchester United set to come later today and the UEFA Champions League final against Inter Milan next week.
Haaland: My life has changed
The 22-year-old is making things happen for Pep Guardiola’s team on the pitch, which has a resultant effect on his life off the pitch.
Speaking to Mirror UK ahead of the FA Cup final, he revealed what changes have occurred in his life and how he can no longer do this as before.
“My life has changed of course. I can’t live so normally any more. That’s how my life is, I can’t complain. I try to enjoy every single moment of it and that’s how it is,” he said.
“I’m 196cm tall and have got long blond hair so wherever I go people are going to see me. So that’s how my life is. There’s nothing I can do, that’s my life. I have to try to enjoy it as much as I can. Of course I wish I could walk into wherever I want without anyone filming me, but that’s not possible,”.
According to Sun Sport, he earns £375,000 per week and drives around the neighbourhood in a Rolls-Royce Cullinan worth £300,000.
Varane has plans for Haaland
Sports Brief reported that Manchester United defender Raphael Varane revealed his plans for Haaland ahead of the FA Cup final later today at Wembley.
The former France international is no stranger to facing the best strikers in the world but admitted United have to work as a team to stop City.
The first-ever all-Manchester FA Cup final will take place this weekend at Wembley under the direction of Pep Guardiola and Erik ten Hag.
We have looked more closely at the City and United managers in preparation for Saturday’s matchup in the capital.
Past meetings
This season’s Premier League encounters are the only times these managers have faced off, with City winning the first encounter 6-3 in October before United came back to win 2-1 at Old Trafford in January.
But while they do not have a huge history of playing against one another, these bosses know each other well.
Guardiola and Pep worked together at Bayern
Ten Hag left Go Ahead Eagles in his homeland in 2013 to become head coach of Bayern Munich II — the reserve team of the perennial Bundesliga champions, who were then managed by Guardiola.
The United boss said the Catalan inspired him, with the pair talking regularly and the Dutchman watching him very carefully.Ten Hag has previously described his training sessions as “a joy to watch”.
Guardiola clearly thinks highly of his cross-city rival, who he said would have made an excellent successor for him at the Etihad before his United appointment was confirmed.
Trophies
Pep Guardiola lifted his fifth Premier League title earlier this month
Guardiola, arguably the greatest coach of this generation, boasts an eye-watering medal haul.
The 52-year-old has won 11 top-flight titles — three LaLiga crowns, three Bundesliga titles and now five Premier League triumphs. Guardiola oversaw a pair of Champions League victories at Barcelona, which he hopes to add to against Inter Milan in June’s Istanbul finale.
Pep has also won domestic trophies aplenty wherever he has been, with Saturday offering the chance to win his second FA Cup.
The freshly-crowned LMA Manager of the Year takes on a man that led Ajax to three Eredivisie titles during his time in Amsterdam, as well as a pair of KNVB Cups and the Johan Cruyff Shield.
Ten Hag’s first silverware as a manager was the Regionalliga Bayern title in 2014, while this season’s Carabao Cup victory was his latest triumph and first at United.
This season
Erik ten Hag will hope to be smiling after the final whistle on Saturday
City are looking to write their name in history by matching United’s 1999 Treble heroes. Guardiola’s side saw off Arsenal’s impressive title charge during an unrelenting end to the season that led them to be crowned with three games to spare — their fifth in six years and third in succession.
Inter stand in their way as City make their second Champions League final appearance on June 10, where they would have the chance to wrap up the Treble, unless Ten Hag’s Red Devils can put a spoke in the wheel at Wembley.
United have improved vastly on last season’s wretched campaign to finish third in the Premier League, securing a Champions League return on the back of ending their six-year wait for silverware.
Ten Hag became just the second manager in the club’s medal-laden history to win a major trophy in his first season at the helm with February’s Carabao Cup triumph against Newcastle.
Erik ten Hag wins Carabao cup
Now comes the chance to add another trophy to the cabinet with a statement victory that would end their neighbours’ Treble dreams.
The Ghanaian international, who had previously gone on strike in an attempt to secure a transfer to Everton last year, now has his sights set on a move to a higher-profile club.
Kudus had an impressive season with Ajax in 2022-23, finding the back of the net 18 times. Additionally, he contributed two goals during the World Cup, including a crucial match-winning performance against South Korea.
His stellar performances have caught the attention of several Champions League clubs, who are closely monitoring the talented attacker.
Given his potential and the impact he could make, Kudus has the potential to be one of the standout bargains in the upcoming transfer window.
Ajax reshuffle
After failing to win the Eredivisie title for the first time since 2018, Ajax need to make a few changes this summer.
Fortunately, they produce and develop talent so well that the funds needed to freshen up their squad are never far away.
Kudus is out of contract in two years’ time and the priority for the Dutch side is to raise as much capital from his sale as possible, rather than allow his value to diminish.
And the dynamic goal threat is seemingly set on an exit too, with his agent Jennifer Mendelewitsch telling Dutch media: “I think it is best for both Ajax and Mohammed that he leaves now. Now is the right time.
“He has rejected an offer to extend his contract until the summer of 2026.
“What I can say is that after the World Cup and this season there is a lot of interest in Kudus.”
Mohammed Kudus is contemplating his future at Ajax
He does not mind ruffling a few feathers, either, following up last summer’s strike action by involving himself in fisticuffs with Neymar in a pre-World Cup friendly for the Black Stars.
After a few heated exchanges in the match between Ghana and Brazil, the forward said: “He’s not better than me. He’s just a higher profile player, that’s all.
“I wasn’t about to let him push me around. What makes him better, for now, is that he has achieved a lot. I’ll get there soon.”
Style of play
Kudus’ style of play reflects that confidence.
No player completed more dribbles per game in the Dutch top tier this term, while he also ranked in the top 20 for shots.
Like several attackers with such a creative skill-set, he believes he is at his best when seeing as much of the ball as possible.
Kudus said: “I still feel that I can do my best in the No10 position. I talked about that with [ex-Ajax] trainer Erik ten Hag. In his style of play, creative and attacking, I saw myself.”
In his debut season in England, the Norwegian forward led Manchester City to their third consecutive Premier League triumph by scoring the most goals.

Robert Lewandowski, who switched from Bayern Munich to Barcelona, finished as La Liga’s top scorer in his first year in the Spanish top flight as he also propelled the Catalan giants to the league title.
Sports Brief, alongside Goal, has revealed the top ten goal-scorers in Europe’s top five leagues following the conclusion of the 2022/23 football season.
1. Erling Haaland, Manchester City
36 goals
Haaland reigned over England in his first season in the Premier League, netting 36 league goals for eventual champions, Manchester City.
The Norwegian forward looks certain to overthrow Lewandowski to become the 2023 Golden Shoe winner. No marksman in Europe’s top five leagues could get close to his goal tally.
Haaland boasts power and pace in abundance, and one of the most sought-after talents on the planet did not disappoint when bursting out of the blocks for the Premier League champions.
2. Harry Kane, Tottenham Hotspur
30 goals
Harry Kane scored a remarkable 30 goals this season for Tottenham, but that was not enough to earn the England forward the top scorer’s award in the English Premier League.
Harry Kane
Kane, who has over 180 Premier League goals to his name, was six goals shy of Haaland’s mark in the EPL, but second among the top scorers in Europe’s top five leagues.
3. Kylian Mbappe, Paris Saint-Germain
28 goals
Kylian Mbappe was voted as the best player in Ligue 1 for the 2022/23 season, beating the likes of Lionel Messi to the prestigious award in France.
Kylian Mbappe
After netting 28 goals for Paris Saint-Germain, Mbappe once again topped the scorer’s chart in France and also landed as the third most lethal forward across Europe.
4. Alexandre Lacazette, Lyon
27 goals
Former Arsenal talisman, Alexandre Lacazette is back to his best since transferring back to his boyhood club, Lyon last summer.
Troyes Lyon
The French forward scored a total of 27 goals in Ligue 1, although his effort was not good enough to help Lyon secure a European spot for next season.
5. Victor Osimhen, Napoli
25 goals
Napoli would be nowhere without Victor Osimhen’s goals this season.
The Nigerian forward powered the Naples club to their first Serie A title in 33 years, after he netted 25 goals to become the league’s top scorer this season.
Victor Osimhen gestures during Napoli’s 1-1 draw against Udinese.
Osimhen also broke numerous records on the way to becoming the goal king in Italy, after eclipsing George Weah’s all-time goal-scoring record in Serie A and surpassing Samuel Eto’o’s highest goal tally by an African in the Italian top flight.
6. Jonathan David, Lille
24 goals
Lille certainly know how to produce top goal-scorers in Europe. Jonathan David has become the hitman for the Ligue 1 side this campaign, with the Canadian forward netting an impressive 24 goals to see his stock rise.
Jonathan David, Lille
7. Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona
23 goals
Lewandowski is a bona fide goal-scoring machine. The Polish forward is unfazed by his competitors as he scores goals for fun.
Robert Lewandoski
Lewandowski again showed why he is one of the most-feared strikers in the world, after he netted an impressive 23 goals in his first season in Spain.
His goals propelled Barcelona to their first La Liga title in three seasons, while he also finished as the top scorer in the division ahead of Karim Benzema.
8. Lautaro Martinez, Inter Milan
21 goals
Lautaro Martinez is one of the biggest reasons why Inter Milan are Coppa Italia champions and also in the final of the UEFA Champions League this season.
Lautaro Martinez, Inter Milan
In Serie A, the Argentina forward was also lethal in front of goal for the Nerrazurri, netting 21 goals to finish second in the top scorers’ chart in Italy.
9. Habib Diallo, Strasbourg
20 goals
Habib Diallo had scored up to 12 goals in a season previously in Ligue 1.

10. Ivan Toney, Brentford
20 goals
Ivan Toney might be facing off-field issues, but the England forward has proved this season that he is one of the best strikers in Europe.
Ivan Toney, Brentford
The Brentford man scored 20 goals this season to finish third in the Premier League scorers’ chart ahead of Mohamed Salah and Marcus Rashford.
Players with most goals, assists
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the most lethal players in Europe are superstars from PSG, Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Manchester City, both in scoring and setting up opportunities.
Some well-known names are among the footballers with the most goals and assists in European football this season, from the old guard to the upcoming stars of the next generation.
Lionel Messi, Vinicius Junior, Mohamed Salah, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland all make up the top five players with the most goals and assists in Europen competition this season.
Mauricio Pochettino has been named the new permanent manager of Chelsea, taking charge after a turbulent campaign that saw the club finish 12th in the Premier League standings. Pochettino, formerly the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, has been entrusted with the task of rejuvenating the Blues.
In light of this appointment, it is worth examining Pochettino’s managerial record.
Espanyol (32.9% win rate)
Having finished his playing career with Espanyol, Pochettino was pressed into service to lead a struggling team in January 2009 and lifted them from the relegation zone to a mid-table finish – drawing with local rivals Barcelona in the Copa del Rey and beating them in LaLiga.
After retiring as a player, Pochettino began his managerial career at Espanyol in 2009.
Espanyol finished 11th, eighth and 14th in his three full seasons in charge, though the former Argentina defender left with them bottom of the table in November 2012 after a poor run of form and a dispute over financial restrictions.
Southampton (38.3% win rate)
Taking over mid-season from the popular Nigel Adkins, Pochettino led Southampton to a 14th-placed finish in 2012-13 and an impressive eighth the following campaign.
Conducting press conferences via an interpreter throughout his spell on the south coast, Pochettino was nevertheless clearly able to get his message across to an over-achieving squad and position himself for higher-profile roles to come.
Tottenham (54.3% win rate)
Pochettino’s five-year reign at Tottenham marked the most prolonged period of success and stability in their recent history, with the club finishing fifth, third, second, third and fourth and reaching finals of the Champions League and the League Cup.
Pochettino celebrates with players after victory
The Argentinian nurtured a Spurs squad that was the youngest in the Premier League when they ended as runners-up in 2016-17, containing a mix of domestic talents such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Eric Dier, and overseas players including Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min and Toby Alderweireld.
A club that had had 10 coaches in 12 years before Pochettino’s arrival in 2014 have cycled through Jose Mourinho, interim boss Ryan Mason (twice), Nuno Espirito Santo, Antonio Conte and caretaker Cristian Stellini in short order since his departure in November 2019.
Paris Saint-Germain (65.5% win rate)
Won 55, drew 15, lost 14;
Paris Saint-Germain, where Pochettino spent time as a player, brought him the first major trophies of his managerial career by winning the Coupe de France in 2020-21 and Ligue 1 in 2021-22.
However, his tenure was not deemed successful as a runners-up finish to Lille in 2020-21 meant PSG missed out on the Ligue 1 title for only the second time in nine seasons, and he failed to guide the capital club to the Champions League final.

Pochettino was sacked last summer having won less than 66 per cent of matches in all competitions, whereas his predecessor Thomas Tuchel – who started this season as Chelsea boss – had a 75 per cent win rate across his two-and-a-half years in charge.
City secured the crown with three games remaining, defeating Arsenal, while Nottingham Forest effectively dashed the Gunners’ hopes of claiming the title on Saturday.
Mikel Arteta’s team had been considered strong contenders for the championship, given their impressive form leading up to the season.
The north Londoners had dominated the league this term as they enjoyed an eight-point lead at the top at some point.
However, a string of poor results in recent weeks denied them a chance to win the title, with their defeat to Nottingham crashing their hopes altogether, per The Guardian.
Supercomputer predicts next season’s winners
While Arsenal are keen to give the title challenge a fresh shot next season, a supercomputer has painted a grim picture of their chances of winning the trophy.
According to The Sun, citing Ladbrokes’ prediction, Man City will retain the trophy once again next season.
Arsenal are billed to finish second once again, with Liverpool, who face the prospect of missing out on a Champions League spot this term, securing a third-place finish.
Manchester United, who have hopes of challenging for the title, will have to contend with a fourth-place finish, with Chelsea billed to finish fifth.
Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are both predicted to finish outside the top four.

Pep Guardiola, the manager ofManchester City, struggled to contain his joy as he played a pivotal role in guiding the club to clinch this season’s Premier League (EPL) title.
City secured the prestigious crown with three games remaining, following a remarkable series of victories in the final stretch.
The Cityzens were officially declared champions on Saturday evening, shortly after Arsenal suffered a detrimental 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
According to BBC, the Gunners’ loss meant it was mathematically impossible for them to catch up to City in the race.
However, Guardiola’s charges had to wait until Sunday before they could finally lift the trophy for the fifth time under the Spaniard.
Guardiola shows off dance moves
The former Barcelona andBayern Munich boss used the opportunity to parade his dance moves as he joined Man City players and fans in a dance, shortly after they were crowned champions.
The Daily Star reports that Man City fans were left in awe of their manager’s groovy dance moves, as the 52-year-old let loose in celebration.

Athletic has reported that, Ajax is set to request a transfer fee of approximately £40 million for Ghanaian international Mohammed Kudus if he is to leave the club in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The midfielder has garnered interest from various clubs, including prominent Premier League teams, due to his impressive performances throughout the season at the Dutch side.
Kudus has made a significant impact, contributing 22 goals and six assists in a total of 48 games for both his club and country this campaign.
The 22-year-old is contracted to Ajax until the end of the 2024/25 season and is said to have rejected a one-year contract extension from the Johan Cruyff Arena outfit.
Mohammed Kudus
The Ghanaian was heavily linked with a move away from Amsterdam during the January transfer window with the player confirming in an interview with Joy Sports’ Gary Al-Smith he spoke with then Everton manager, Frank Lampard, over a possible move to the Toffees.
The Athletic reports thatAjax would rather part ways with the player this summer “than allow them to enter the final 24 months of their deals” with a fee of £40million said to be enough to convince the Eredivisie side.
Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle United have been mentioned as clubs keeping tabs on the former Right to Dream academy graduate.
Kudus joined Ajax in 2020 from Danish side Nordsjaelland and has since been on the rise at club and international levels.
Popular Afrobeats star, Davido was recently seen at Etihad Stadium, sporting a Manchester City jersey while attending the match between the Premier League champions and Chelsea.
The appearance followed an invitation from global sports company PUMA, who had engaged in a Twitter exchange with Davido the day prior.
PUMA had unveiled the new PUMA jerseys for Manchester City’s upcoming 2023/24 season, prompting the interaction between the music icon and the sports company.
Davido reacted to the post, revealing how impressed he was by the design.
He wrote, “Hmmm. Looking like the jersey of champions !
Love to see it ! #PumaFam,”.
Davido files Puma jet to Etihad for City’s Premier League championships
Davido soon received a response from PUMA who appreciated him for his comment and proceeded to invite him to the title-celebration match at the Etihad.
In a prompt reply, Davido requested that a jet be sent to him, and the company promised him that they would.
Meanwhile, in response to a curious fan wanting to know if Davido showed up for the match, PUMA shared a picture of the superstar in Etihad donning a Man City jersey.
After winning their fifth Premier League championship in as many years, Manchester City’s stars praised the club as “unstoppable” and one of the best squads in league history.
City sealed the deal in spectacular fashion by defeating Chelsea 1-0 for their 12th straight league victory after Arsenal’s defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday made it clear that they could not be overcome.
Kyle Walker, a defender, said to Sky Sports: “Of course, every single one is a very important occasion.
“I think to not be sitting at the top of the league for as long as we were, I think it was 11 points at one stage, so to then come back just needing a victory out of one of the three games, it’s brilliant.
“This group of lads are second to none. They’re professionals, they’re winners and I think that’s how we get across the line more times than not.
“But we’re not finished. We’ve got the FA Cup against our bitter rivals Manchester United and then we’ve got the Champions League final.”
City face United in the FA Cup final on June 3 before meeting Inter Milan a week later as they chase a firstChampions League crown.
Walker. added: “It would be fantastic but there’s a lot of football to be played before we can start saying about the Treble.
“We’ve got two massive finals. I think, just for this club and this group of lads that I’ve been involved with for six years, to say we’re up there with one of the greatest Premier League teams of all time, I think we have to go and conquer some of that.
“To go and get this, I think we can really stamp our mark on being one of the greatest teams of all-time in the Premier League.”
Jack Grealish has been a key player in their recent winning run, and he said of his second Premier League title: “Obviously it’s different. For me personally, I feel this year especially I’ve played much more of a part.
“I feel good in myself, I feel confident, back to my normal self and what I knew I could do.”
Asked if City feel invincible, the England forward added: “It’s mad because I spoke to some of the lads not long ago and I said, ‘Imagine if someone would have said to you to win the league you’ve got to go and win 12 games in a row?’
“I’m not saying I didn’t think we could do it but it was going to be difficult. We’ve got so much talent in this squad and I think at the moment we feel unstoppable.”
It was a first title for goal machine Erling Haaland, who said: “(It’s) a dream. I don’t know what to say. It’s just unreal and I’m so happy. These are memories I will remember for the rest of my life. We’ve been fighting so hard.
“Debut season, 36 goals so far, Premier League trophy and two finals left — not a bad start.”
Kevin De Bruyne is now an old hand at winning titles with City, and he added: “I know people expect us to win a lot but we work every day for this and a lot of people sacrifice for us so we’re very grateful.
“I think sometimes it’s more tough mentally than it is physically because you have to go again, again, again, but the team is hungry. I want to win more and keep going while I still can.”
The emotions were a little different for midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who finally made his first Premier League start for the club.
“Obviously it was a great feeling,” he said. “When I came in this morning the manager told me I was playing and I was just happy, to be honest.
“But I was happy because we won the league the night before and I knew there might be a chance I could play. I just went home, relaxed, and I enjoyed every moment out here.
“It’s been unbelievably tough, it’s probably been one of the lowest points in myself, confidence-wise, in my career. But, with the guys around me, the leaders that have kept me going, they told me I’d get my chance and luckily today I did.
“I’m very lucky that I’ve got the guys around me to keep pushing me and working me as hard as possible.”
In a straightforward manner, Manchester City celebrated their latest Premier League title triumph with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday.
Having already secured the title due to Arsenal’s loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Pep Guardiola’s Treble-chasing side took to the field at the Etihad Stadium amidst a festive atmosphere.
Despite fielding a much-changed lineup, City delighted their fans with an early goal from Julian Alvarez.
While Chelsea had a few bright moments, City never seemed to relinquish control, although they couldn’t replicate the intensity they displayed in their midweek victory over Real Madrid. The fans were in a celebratory mood, basking in the sunshine and even performing the famous ‘Poznan’ celebration on multiple occasions.
As City entered the field, they were honored with a guard of honour from their opponents. The Blues were left chasing shadows as City confidently moved the ball around, highlighting the gap between the two teams.
It was only a matter of time before the opening goal arrived, and it came in the 12th minute. City won possession in midfield, and Cole Palmer found Alvarez in front of the goal.
The Argentinian World Cup winner took a touch before unleashing a powerful shot across Kepa Arrizabalaga, marking City’s 100th home goal in all competitions this season.
Chelsea struggled to match City’s pace and precision, mirroring their disappointing end to the season under temporary manager Frank Lampard. Former City forward Raheem Sterling attempted to rally the Blues, making promising runs behind the City defense, but he failed to find a teammate on one occasion and had his shot saved by Stefan Ortega on another.
Conor Gallagher came close to equalizing when he headed against the post from a cross by Lewis Hall.
Overall, it was a dominant display by Manchester City, who showcased their superiority and celebrated their fifth Premier League title in six seasons. Chelsea, on the other hand, were left facing a challenging afternoon and a reminder of the gap they aspire to bridge.
Yet City always seemed in command and Phil Foden was only narrowly off-target with an attempted chip and Kalvin Phillips, finally making his first league start for the champions, blasted wide.
Phillips was inches away from getting on the scoresheet after the break when he met a Riyad Mahrez free-kick with a firm header but it rebounded off the foot of the post.
At the other end, Hall and Sterling both shot at Ortega. Sterling had another effort cleared off the line by City substitute John Stones, although an offside flag was raised anyway.
Alvarez thought he had claimed a second with just under 20 minutes remaining but Mahrez controlled the ball with his arm before teeing up the Argentinian.
With it being City’s last home match of the season, star pair Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne were given a run-out in the latter stages. Rodri also came off the bench as City closed out their 12th successive Premier League win.
Thousands of fans invaded the pitch after the final whistle, delaying the trophy presentation.
After the celebrations subside, City have further league games at Brighton and Brentford before they play the FA Cup and Champions League finals next month.
After Arsenal’s defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Pep Guardiola’s treble-chasing team was already crowned champions for the fifth time in six years.
As a result, the Blues’ visit to the Etihad Stadium coincided with a festive atmosphere, and an early goal from Julian Alvarez gave the crowd additional reason to shout.
Julian Alvarez
Chelsea had a few bright moments but City, without getting anywhere near the intensity with which they crushed Real Madrid in midweek, always seemed in control.
Fans had arrived to party in the sunshine and the ‘Poznan’ was seen on more than one occasion.
City were given a guard of honour by their opponents as they entered the field and they went on to knock the ball around with a such a swagger that – perhaps embarrassingly for a Chelsea side that aspires to the heights City have reached – it appeared the Londoners faced a long afternoon.
It seemed only a matter of time before the opening goal came and it arrived after 12 minutes as City seized possession in midfield and Cole Palmer picked out Alvarez in front of goal.
Chelsea looked well off the pace, much as they have done throughout what has been a dispiriting end to the season under temporary boss Frank Lampard.
Former City forward Raheem Sterling attempted to rouse them. The England international twice got behind the City defence but was unable to pick out a team-mate the first time and then had a shot saved by Stefan Ortega.
Conor Gallagher then went closer when he headed against the post from a Lewis Hall cross.

After a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest, Arsenal’s slim hopes of winning the Premier League title faded away, allowing Manchester City to secure their fifth crown in six years.
Although Arsenal demonstrated remarkable form for a significant portion of the season, spending 248 days at the top of the table and holding an eight-point lead over City in March, a concerning decline has led to just two victories in their last eight matches.
That allowed them to be overtaken by Pep Guardiola’s relentless juggernaut, who have won 11 games in a row.
The Spaniard says Arsenal have to find a way to compete with City but it will not be a quick fix.
“This is my job, this is our job, and this is what this club deserves,” Arteta said.
“It wasn’t enough. I know we’re not at that level, but we have to find a way. This is not enough. It’s not going to change in three months time. We need to be at that level but we need to find other ways to do it.
“For example at Forest we needed to play much better. This is my responsibility.
“That’s why we have to push for that to happen. That’s not going to happen if we don’t make a lot of right decisions and think smart and have the mentality every day to get to that level.”
For large parts of the season, which began with more than 20 new signings, they looked destined to return straight back to the Championship, not least when they were on an 11-game winless run going into the end of April.
Boss Steve Cooper steered them away from danger, thanks to 10 points from the last five games, and he is thankful to the fans, who have been vociferous in their support throughout the campaign.
Arteta and Pep
It looked possible that the Welshman could be sacked on two occasions during the campaign, but Forest fans voted with their feet and came out in unanimous support of their manager.
And Cooper will never forget that.
“My family and myself will be in debt to these supporters forever,” he said.
“What they have given me this year in an era of people always wanting change and having no patience, our supporters have been the complete opposite. They have been the best with me in some difficult times. That takes some doing.
“The whole sense of being part of something, being wanted and that sense of belonging is such a powerful feeling. Our supporters have set the standard for how to support a team.”
City successfully defended their Premier League crown on Saturday, May 20, as Arsenal suffered a 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest.
According to The Sun, Guardiola has now won a total of five top-flight titles since assuming the managerial role at Manchester City seven years ago.
Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City
The Spaniard still has more trophies to change before the end of the season, with the FA Cup and the Champions League trophies on the horizon.
However, Guardiola would need to help see off rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup final and Serie A giants Inter Milan for a chance to win a historic treble with City.
Should this happen, City will become the first Premier League team to win the treble since 1999, when Man United did it under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Pep hints at quitting Man City
Despite Guardiola’s significant success with Man City, it has emerged that the Spaniard could still dump the club.
The former Barcelona boss gave a rather cryptic answer when asked about his future at the Etihad Stadium before Arsenal’s defeat handed his side the Premier League title.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Guardiola was asked if he would quit City if there is nothing left to fight for in terms of trophies.
“First, we have to win it. [Then] you can ask me after and I will tell you how I feel and how I think,” he said.
“Of course, if we achieve then I will tell you,” he added.
Pep Guardiola has downplayed his role inMan City’s exceptional season, despite their impressive form and the potential to secure a treble.
As they prepare to host Chelsea in their final Premier League home game, with the FA Cup and Champions League finals on the horizon, there is a sense of celebration surrounding the team.
Guardiola has once again been a huge factor in their success, with little doubt after Wednesday’s ruthless demolition of Real Madrid that he has brought his team to the boil at just the right time.
Yet the inspirational Catalan has no interest in taking all the credit.

The City boss said: “As a manager, I feel part of something but, no confusion, I never think it belongs to me.
“I’m part of it, I don’t deny it, but not without the incredible work and decisions of the sporting director, the board and the players, who are the most important thing.
“I am a part of that and I am really proud but I’m not the only person to achieve the Premier Leagues or Champions League finals and so on. I don’t feel only I am responsible for that.”
Defender Nathan Ake is City’s only fitness doubt for the visit of Chelsea. The Netherlands international has missed the last three games after suffering a recurrence of a hamstring injury.

City are unbeaten in their last 23 games in all competitions since February and have won 19 of them.
The nominations for the end-of-season awards in the Premier League have been announced, with Arsenal and Manchester City featuring prominently.
These two clubs have played a significant role in the captivating title race, with Manchester City currently leading the way in their pursuit of a historic treble.
✅ Young Player of the Season nomination ✅ Player of the Season nomination
Captain Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli are all in contention for the prestigious award. However, last year’s winner Phil Foden is not among the nominees this time around.
Instead, his prolific Manchester City teammate Erling Haaland has been recognized for his exceptional performances.
Joining the Gunners trio and the Norwegian striker on the list of nominees are Brighton duo Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister, as well as Newcastle pair Sven Botman and Alexander Isak.
The competition for the Young Player of the Season award promises to be intense, with these talented individuals showcasing their skills throughout the campaign.
Manager of the Season
Unsurprisingly, Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola have both received nominations for the Premier League Manager of the Season award.

The Gunners boss has led the team to their highest finish since 2015-16, while the City manager is on the cusp of winning a fifth title in six years.
Newcastle’s Eddie Howe and Fulham boss Marco Silva both make the cut, as do Aston Villa leader Unai Emery and Brighton mastermind Roberto De Zerbi, who both joined their respective clubs during the 2022-23 season.
The Premier League season is approaching its thrilling conclusion, with captivating storylines unfolding in the title race, top four battle, and relegation fight after the weekend’s matches, the Super Computer has come out with its prediction.
The race for the league title has intensified, with teams vying for the prestigious crown. Each match carries immense significance as the top contenders battle for crucial points to secure the championship.
The excitement is palpable as fans eagerly await the final outcome.
Simultaneously, the competition for a top-four finish, guaranteeing qualification for lucrative European competitions, has taken dramatic turns. The fight for those coveted positions has become fiercely competitive, with teams jostling for points and striving to secure their place among the elite.
At the other end of the table, the relegation dogfight has intensified the drama. The threat of demotion looms large for struggling teams, adding immense pressure to their performances.

And now, a supercomputer has predicted how the final table will look with just two weeks to go.
Arsenal’s 3-0 loss to Brighton did them no favours in the title race after Manchester City cruised to victory over Everton.
Meanwhile, Manchester United took a big step towards the Champions League after beating Wolves 2-0.
The pressure will now be on Liverpool to deliver against Leicester this evening if they hope to catch the Red Devils.
Southampton’s relegation from the top flight was also confirmed after a 2-0 loss to Fulham.
Draws for Leeds and Nottingham Forest against Newcastle and Chelsea respectively are keeping the bottom teams honest.
But what does the final table look like?
Well, using data provided by BETSiE from bettingexpert.com has predicted how the final table will look at the end of May 28.
At the top of the tree, City will cash in on their new lead to win the title over Arsenal by 5.2 points.
The top four will also see a change in the order, but not from the outside, with the computer predicting Man Utd to overtake Newcastle for third by the slimmest of margins – 0.1 points to be precise.
It means Liverpool are predicted to finish fifth, with Brighton joining them in the Europa League while Tottenham compete in the Europa Conference League as Aston Villa miss out on European football.
At the bottom, Leeds and Leicester are predicted to join the Saints in relegation to the Championship, with both sat roughly two points adrift from Everton and Nottingham Forest.
Midtable will also see a shake-up,with Chelsea set to drop into 12th at the expense of Crystal Palace.
Mauricio Pochettino is set to face a significant challenge in retaining Mason Mount at Chelsea.
The new manager has identified the midfielder’s contract situation, valued at £60 million, as a key priority when he assumes his role at the end of the season.
However, it appears that Pochettino’s arrival has come too late to salvage the ongoing negotiations, and it seems likely that Mount, a highly regarded player among Chelsea fans, will depart his childhood club after being with them for 18 years.
At 24 years old, Mount has just over a year remaining on his current contract, and discussions have reached an impasse after ten months.
Mason Mount in action
SunSport can reveal Mount was offered a one-yearextension by Chelsea in February but this was flatly rejected and seen as a ploy simply to raise his transfer fee.
Relations between the player’s representatives and the club are at an all-time low and Pochettino needs a “miracle” to turn it round.
A Blues source said: “It feels like it is too late now for Mason.
“Pochettino is good but he can’t work miracles.
“If he had been brought in when Chelsea sacked Thomas Tuchel in September then maybe it would be a different story.
“But in ten months there hasn’t been any resolution and other clubs want him. Good luck to Poch and Mason but we’re not hopeful.”
Mauricio Pochettino is allegedly Chelsea’s new coach
Mount is injured but eyeing a return for the final two games this season — at Manchester United then home to Newcastle on May 28.
That could well be the end of the England star’s Blues journey, which started when he was six.
Premier League rivals Liverpool and Arsenal have been strongly linked with interest in Mount.
And Chelsea will sell if he does not sign a new deal as they do not want him leaving for free at the end of next season.
This season in Premier League, Chelsea’s form is Average overall with 11 wins, 9 draws, and 14 losses.
This performance currently places Chelsea at 11th out of 20 teams in the Premier League Table, winning 32% of matches.
Chelsea’s home form is poor with the following results : 6 wins, 5 draws, and 6 losses.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank has referred to David Raya as a goalkeeper worth “£40 million-plus” and acknowledged the possibility of him leaving at the end of the season as the club faces challenges in retaining key players.
Raya has declined opportunities to extend his contract, which is due to expire at the end of the 2023-24 season.
Amidst considerable speculation about their futures, Frank praised both Raya and the team’s top scorer, Ivan Toney.
“There is no doubt that David (Raya) is a case where there is one year left and we will see what will happen. We’re very happy with David here,” Frank said.
“Everyone knows he is a £40m-plus goalkeeper if anyone is interested and we are prepared just like in any position.
“There is a possibility he’ll leave this summer maybe, for the right price, and if that happens then of course we need to be prepared.”
Toney’s 20 goals in the Premier League so far is an improvement on the 12 he got in the previous campaign as Frank lauded the striker’s career path and ability which landed him a 2020 move from Peterborough.
“I love Ivan and I think it’s fantastic what he has achieved here and there’s more to achieve here for him. I’m really really happy he’s a Brentford player,” the Bees boss added.
"Kevin Schade hasn't played consistently but we knew the potential was huge. We’ve had to build him up physically. He’s started four times in the last six. He’s adding more interesting aspects to his game so we are very pleased with his performances"#BREWHUpic.twitter.com/0bfn3MLRRe
“He did well in League One, then he did well in the Championship and got promoted, he got 12 Premier League goals last year, now he’s on 20, hopefully getting even more, what is the limit? I think he has good potential.
“I know he’s not 22 (Toney) but look at some of the best strikers in the world, (Robert) Lewandowski, (Karim) Benzema, they seem like fine wines getting better, they know how to be in good positions. I think Ivan will only get better and better.”
Sunday’s opponents West Ham have one foot in the Europa Conference League final after Thursday’s 2-1semi-final first leg win over AZ Alkmaar but have had a turbulent season in the Premier League.
The Irons, in 15th, have avoided being pulled into any late relegation drama as they sit seven points clear of 18th-placed Leicester.
Frank defended David Moyes despite the Irons manager facing heavy criticism for his side’s sub-par performances throughout the campaign.
“I think they are solid defensively, I think they are very good on the counter, they have some very good offensive players in (Jarrod) Bowen, (Said) Benrahma, (Michail) Antonio or (Danny) Ings if he plays,” he mentioned.
Pep Guardiola has expressed his concern over the scheduling clash caused by the Eurovision Song Contest, as Manchester City aims to maintain their Treble bid.
The Premier League leaders have an important away match against relegation-threatened Everton on Sunday, just three days before their Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid at home.
Guardiola would have preferred the game to be played on Saturday, but due to security reasons related to the Eurovision event in Liverpool city centre, it was not possible.
That means Real, who are out of contention for the LaLiga title and are in action on Saturday against Getafe, will have a day’s rest more than City heading into Wednesday’s encounter.
Guardiola said at a press conference: “My thought is just Everton, no more than that.
“Eleven months working for the Premier League, I don’t want to be distracted for Madrid because I won’t have time.
“Well, not much, because we play Sunday – thank you so much. I don’t understand it, but I don’t want to fight for that any more.
“We have to adapt to it. It doesn’t matter, I don’t fight any more the schedules.
“In the end we can’t play Saturday because of Eurovision or something like that in Liverpool and we don’t have enough bodies to handle two important events sometimes.
“OK, you have to adapt. What can I do? We’d prefer to play Saturday to be able to prepare but it is what it is.
Unlike Real, City will not want to ease up over the weekend as they look to keep Arsenal at bay in the title race.
City go into the weekend fixtures with a clear advantage, leading the Gunners by a point with a game in hand.
They could face a tough challenge against an Everton side fighting for survival and who claimed a significant victory by thrashing European hopefuls Brighton 5-1 in their last outing.
Real defender Dani Carvajal has suggested the intensity of City’s fixtures could benefit the Spanish side – who drew 1-1 with City in Tuesday’s first leg – but Guardiola is confident his players can stand up to the challenge.
He said: “Every player is ready to play and give his own absolute contribution.
“I thought a lot about a substitution in the Bernabeu. I decided on players on the bench that are so dynamic – Phil (Foden), Julian (Alvarez), Riyad (Mahrez).
“But in the moment we didn’t need that, we didn’t need a player to increase our rhythm.
“But everybody will be so important, we have a lot of games and everyone is ready.”
Despite his absence, Mitrovic had been training regularly with the team and had scored 11 goals in 21 games in the Premier League, after helping Fulham secure promotion from the Championship with a record-breaking 43 goals in the previous season.
“Mitrovic is back and it’s always good to have him back,” said Silva, whose side travel to bottom-club Southampton on Saturday.
“It’s been tough, I won’t hide it from you. His behaviour has been really good all this period, with support from ourselves. He knew from the first day it was going to be different from a normal ban or normal injury.
“He was always working with the team. It was a tough period for him, of course. It will be good to have him back.
“It was a strong feeling for us, it’s clear it was an exaggerated thing. We admitted as a club that you cannot react in that situation.
It’s clear, he did it, he admitted the mistake but the number of games, if you compare with other situations, is completely different. We as a club keep strong and we keep supporting him.”
Silva has rotated who he has used in the central attacking position in the Serbia striker’s absence, withCarlos Vinicius taking on the role during Monday’s 5-3 win against Leicester and scoring his fourth of the season.
Daniel James and Bobby Decordova Reid have also been deployed as strikers as the Cottagers maintained the push to break their record top-flight points tally of 53, which was set by Roy Hodgson’s side in 2009.
Silva was especially impressed with Vinicius’ performance in the rout of Leicester.
“It’s what any manager wants really,” Silva added. “It was the reason why we signed Carlos.
Of course with more game time, and making good things, bad things, mistakes, make the players grow of course with some important goals.
“It’s given (him) the confidence he needs. It’s nice to see him performing better and better the last few games.
“It’s important to have a player like Mitro, a player like Vini, and I have to say even we won two games with Daniel James as a striker and Bobby as a striker. Different profile and we were able to win that game against Everton and Leeds at home.
“That shows that everyone knows his role, everyone is fighting for the club and can pop up in certain moments of the season.”
Silva declined to comment on whether negotiations had begun with the club over a new contract, with his current deal expiring at the end of next season.
“Nothing new,” he said. “It’s a moment of the season when everyone is going to talk about managers, about players, about everything. There are rumours around everything.
“When you do a good season of course, it’s a consequence of the performance, the way the team is playing. It’s a normal situation. If there’s something new, we’re going to announce it.”
Ryan Mason, who is currently serving asTottenham’s second interim manager, has received praise from defender Ben Davies for his contributions to the team.
Tottenham achieved their first victory under Mason’s leadership on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.
Mason made changes to Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 system, which had been used frequently before his arrival.
Tottenham lined up in a 4-4-2 out of possession and it helped them keep a first clean sheet in the Premier League since February 26 with more confidence restored to a group who have experienced crushing defeats to Bournemouth, Newcastle and Liverpool in the past month.
“It’s something we’re all well aware of and one that we needed for a long time. It’s a good start for us and hopefully we can kick on for the final games now,” Davies said of the shut-out against Palace.
“It’s not the easiest situation to come into (for Ryan). We’ve got limited amount of games so it’s hard for him to come in and completely change things and do it his own way.
“But there’s been a clear message that we need to be as good as we can with the ball and tighten up without it.
“It’s pretty basic but that’s the way we’ve been training and working. Ryan’s instilled that belief in us that we’re able to do that.”
Davies, who has largely played left of a back three this season, was used as a full-back last weekend before being asked to push higher up the pitch when Spurs attacked.
On the right wing was January recruit Pedro Porro and it was the Spain international who set up Harry Kane’s winner to help make up for some poor defensive showings at St James’ Park and Anfield recently.
Davies added: “Pedro is still a young player. We know the intensity and scrutiny of the Premier League, you make one little mistake and it’s highlighted for the world to see.
“Look, we all know how good a player he is. We’ve seen it on the training pitch. When you iron out those mistakes I think we’ve got a top player on our hands.
“Sometimes when you’re new to the club and the Premier League, you probably feel a lot of demand, especially when it comes to the transfer fee, to try to impress.
“Sometimes it’s about making sure you do the basics and do the simple things right first. I think he did that. He defended well and then when he got the opportunity (to attack) he was good.”
Tottenham’s win over Palace moved them up to sixth and kept them on course to qualify for a European competition.
“Our aspiration is to play European football and be involved in as many competitions as we can,” Davies insisted.
Following his farewell game in charge of Manchester United versus West Brom at the Hawthorns, Sir Alex Ferguson thanks the traveling supporters.
Ten years have passed since Manchester United officially announced Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement on Monday, May 8, 2023.
Despite the incredible measures United took to keep it a secret, the story surfaced in the media the night before the official announcement.
It may be claimed that ten years later, the club hasn’t really recovered from Ferguson’s departure.
The Scot remains the most decorated manager in British football.
He won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups, two Champions Leagues, a European Cup Winners’ Cup, a European Super Cup, an Intercontinental Cup and a Fifa Club World Cup during his time at Manchester United.
Add to that the three Scottish titles, four Scottish Cups, Scottish League Cup, European Cup Winners’ Cup and European Super Cup he won as manager of Aberdeen.
Now 81, in his autobiography ‘Alex Ferguson’, he detailed why he decided to quit after nearly 27 years in one of the game’s toughest and most high-profile jobs.
‘”I’m going to retire,” he told wife Cathy, around Christmas 2012.
‘”Why are you going to do that,” she replied.
“Cathy, who had lost her sister Bridget in the October and was struggling to come to terms with that bereavement, soon agreed it was the right course. Contractually, I was obliged to tell the club by 31 March if I was going to stand down that summer,” wrote Ferguson.
So set in motion the wheels for Ferguson’s departure. It was also the beginning of an attempt to keep one of the biggest stories of the Premier League era under wraps at perhaps its most-scrutinised club.
BBC Sport has spoken to a number of sources around United at that time for an insight into the process that ended with an amazing 5-5 draw in Ferguson’s last game as a manager at West Brom on 19 May.
The Real Madrid clue
Ferguson told United chief executive David Gill of his plans early in 2013.
Gill had initially called their meeting to tell Ferguson of his own departure.
Having worked closely with Ferguson for more than a decade, Gill wanted the manager to be among the first to know he intended to stand down the following summer, hoping a lack of club ties would improve his chances of taking a seat on Uefa’s powerful executive committee.
However, Gill was surprised to hear Ferguson reveal that the current season would also be his last at Old Trafford.
The news stayed secret for months.
Long after the 31 March deadline passed, only a select few, including United’s owners, the Glazer family, knew of Ferguson’s impending exit.
However, looking back, there was a giant clue.
On 5 March, United were knocked out of the Champions League in controversial fashion by Real Madrid. They had been ahead in the tie when United winger Nani was sent off. On the touchline, Ferguson was furious.
When the teams returned to the dressing room, Gill went to speak to Mike Phelan, Ferguson’s assistant.
Phelan had been Ferguson’s regular stand-in for post-match interviews with the BBC during the manager’s seven-year boycott of the broadcaster over a disputed documentary about his son Jason.
In addition, the only time the United manager conducted the separate post-match media conferences was after European games when it was a contractual requirement.
Despite the magnitude of the game and the unprecedented nature of the request in a European context, Gill told Phelan that he would have to take the place of an upset and angry Ferguson in front of the media. Ferguson said the same.
The feeling was Ferguson might say something he would regret.
Phelan told the media Ferguson was “distraught” and “in no fit state” to talk to them.
March 2013: Sir Alex Ferguson is “distraught” after Real loss, says his assistant Mike Phelan
What Ferguson and Gill knew, but neither Phelan nor anyone in the media were aware of, was that the loss signalled the end of the manager’s final chance to lift the trophy he coveted the most once more.
His combination of rage and incredulity at the performance of Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir was heightened by the knowledge there could be no chance of redemption. In Champions League terms, it was the end.
Putting a plan in place
It wasn’t until early April that the circle of trust was widened.
Even then, it extended to no-one other than those who, for operational reasons, had to know about Ferguson’s departure and, crucially, could be trusted.
A couple of weeks later, on 22 April, United secured the title when Robin van Persie scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 win against Aston Villa.
Van Persie had been recruited from Arsenal the previous summer, having received personal assurances from Ferguson that he had no plans to stand down.
But the Scot had changed his mind and that title success paved the way for a plan to be put in place.
It was not a given at that time United would arrange an open-top bus parade to celebrate winning the Premier League.
They famously didn’t have one after winning the Premier League and Champions League in 2008, nor the following season when they won the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final.
However, on the basis Manchester City had celebrated their own success 12 months earlier with a parade, nothing seemed too unusual in United saying they wanted one as well.
Those at the club with responsibility for marking key moments were told to push the boat out. It was, after all, they were told, a milestone 20th championship. Behind that push lay the knowledge it would also be marking Ferguson’s last.
Still, hardly anyone knew the reality. The announcement of Ferguson’s departure was set for the morning of Wednesday, 8 May.
On the Tuesday morning, a meeting was called for various staff members.
They were told to prepare for a big announcement, as big as it was possible to be, for the following morning. The tone of the conversation was to steer people towards believing it was transfer or sponsorship related.
But, at the end of the meeting, a lone voice stated firmly “the king is dead, long live the king”. Those present who were aware of Ferguson’s exit were stunned.
It hadn’t been spelt out but there could be no greater steer as to what was about to unfold.
As the meeting broke up, so the rumours spread, initially across United’s Carrington training ground, then out, to the annual golf day organised by former players at the exclusive Dunham Forest course in Cheshire.
Rumours began to spread among the Manchester United squad as they attended a charity golf day on the day before Ferguson confirmed his departure
As speculation swirled, staff in the know realised their secret was getting away from them.
Senior figures on the coaching staff received text messages informing them of the golf day gossip.
Key website workers were told to report to Old Trafford for 06:00 BST the following morning. Some, who got on well with the media, were bombarded with calls and eventually opted to switch their phones off.
The announcement
The stories of Ferguson’s impending departure appeared online later that evening. The Telegraph was first, but were followed almost immediately by the remainder of Fleet Street.
By the following morning, the reports were being carried by radio and TV outlets.
Ferguson was not happy. He wanted the information to come from him.
As the staff he worked closest with arrived for work, he asked to see them. He apologised for the manner in which the information had come out, but confirmed he was standing down. The meetings were brief, no longer than 10 minutes.
Preparations then continued for the final two games – against Swansea and West Brom – as though nothing had happened, even though almost all were blindsided.
In the preceding months, Ferguson had been part of numerous meetings to discuss that summer’s pre-season trip to Australia and the following campaign. He was in good health. Nothing hinted at the massive decision he had made.
Then Ferguson went to see his players. At the same time, the official announcement was being prepared for release.
The response of the players was typical of a group of younger men being addressed by an older one. There were a myriad of jokes about the lack of dressing-room dressing-downs in the future, of their relief Ferguson was finally going and predictions he would change his mind anyway and be back next season.
At Old Trafford the mood was more serious and more tense. The number of staff arriving early alerted security staff to a something significant in the offing. It merely reinforced what they were reading and hearing in the media.
The day Sir Alex resigned
Those responsible for publishing the information were taken to Box 30, or the ‘War Room’ as it is known internally, on the first tier of the East Stand. It is the most private hospitality box at the stadium. Most recently it was seen in promotional video Ferguson filmed with Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to publicise the clubs’ pre-season meeting in San Diego this July.
The actual detail of the press release was only finalised 10 minutes before it was due to go live.
The statement itself, containing lengthy quotes from Ferguson, Gill and co-chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer, was checked and re-checked to make sure it went out without error. All involved understood the scale of what would happen when the send button was pressed.
Sure enough, for a while, the United website couldn’t cope as the number of visitors brought it to a standstill.
Back in the canteen at Carrington, Ferguson, accompanied by son Jason, spoke to remaining staff. It was an emotional morning. He had to steady himself on a couple of occasions to get through. Little wonder, once his various addresses had been made, he felt the need to return home to Wilmslow to clear his head.
The final games
Four days later, Ferguson’s final programme notes were published. Unlike some managers, who don’t write or even read them, he always spent time thinking about the message he wanted to deliver.
“It is the right time,” he said.
“It was important to me to leave the organisation in the best possible shape and I believe I have done so.”
He paid tribute to his wife and family, his players and staff, club legend and friend Sir Bobby Charlton, Gill and the Glazer family.
He finished with this thank-you to the fans:
“It has been an honour and enormous privilege to have had the opportunity to lead your club and I have treasured my time as manager of Manchester United.”
Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’ and Nat King Cole’s ‘Unforgettable’ were played before kick-off.
Rio Ferdinand didn’t quite score the winner in ‘Fergie-time’ but the 87th minute was late enough to be a fitting end to Ferguson’s last game at Old Trafford.
He emerged, in the pouring rain, to take the acclaim of a packed stadium.
Merchandise sellers around Old Trafford worked fast to produce commemorative t-shirts ahead of Ferguson’s final home game against Swansea
Typically, he took the microphone and declared he had “no script in his mind, I am just going to ramble on” before finding exactly the right words, across four minutes, including “you have been the most fantastic experience of my life” and “your job now is to stand by our new manager”. His grandchildren then accompanied him on a final lap of the stadium.
One week later, at West Brom, it really was the end.
The United players presented Ferguson with a 1941 Rolex watch, marking the year of his birth. They also gave him a book of photographs depicting his time at United. It included shots of his family, who were with him on that final momentous day at the Hawthorns.
He had a meal with his coaching staff on the night before the game, although given the level of uncertainty some of them were experiencing, the mood was reflective rather than celebratory.
Ferguson was said to be relaxed in the dressing room beforehand, but his behaviour was reasonably normal for a matchday.
A trade union shop steward in Glasgow’s shipyards before he moved into football, Ferguson’s final team talk concentrated on working-class values. He urged his players to show their personalities, play the Manchester United way and play to win.
He had a joke with fourth official Chris Foy when he made his way through the guard of honour formed by players of both sides. As usual, he sat between Phelan and first-team coach Rene Meulensteen on the bench.
There was the familiar sight of him chewing gum in frustration as Romelu Lukaku completed a hat-trick and West Brom fought back from 5-2 down to claim a draw. However, those close by noted the usual anger was missing.
At the final whistle, Ryan Giggs pushed Ferguson in front of the players to acknowledge the visiting fans. Paul Scholes was supposed to be with him as he prepared for his – second – retirement but, typically, the then media-shy midfielder was nowhere to be seen.
May 2013: Ferguson salutes fans one last time
Back in the dressing room, Giggs reflected on the manner of the ridiculous result and, with the then-Everton manager already extensively linked as Ferguson’s successor, joked: “David Moyes has just resigned.”
Ferguson’s coaching team went for the usual post-match chat with West Brom boss and fellow Scot Steve Clarke, who in his programme notes for the game had said: “The scale and eloquence of the tributes that have come his way speak volumes for the scale of his contribution to the game.”
West Brom had taken the unprecedented step of including an astonishing 40-page tribute to Ferguson in their match programme. Later they sent on the official teamsheets, all signed.
The end of an era
Looking back, United were in the process of making a number of mistakes.
That night, half a dozen key staff met for a drink on the outskirts of Manchester to discuss what had happened and where United went from there. There were no big meetings planned to outline the future.
Ferguson, understandably, decided to step away completely to ensure his presence didn’t restrict Moyes as he took over the reins.
Incredibly, United did not buy Moyes out of the remainder of his Everton contract. It was 1 July – a month and a half after Ferguson’s final game – before he could begin work properly.
Moyes faced the media for the first time, alongside Nemanja Vidic in a news conference to promote the club’s pre-season tour a few days later. But he was already playing catch-up and never recovered the ground.
Within 12 months, in addition to Ferguson, Gill and Scholes, Phelan, Meulensteen, goalkeeping coach Eric Steele, Ferdinand, Vidic and full-back Patrice Evra had all left the club. Giggs retired. Within two years, respected youth team coach Paul McGuiness and academy director Brian McClair had gone as well.
It really was the end of an era. Nothing at Manchester United would ever be the same again.
Ferguson’s successor David Moyes was sacked 10 months into a six-year contract at Old Trafford
The Norwegian international is on the verge of breaking the Premier League’s single-season goal record, having scored his 34th goal of the campaign in City’s recent 2-1 victory over Fulham.
Haaland’s incredible form has seen him join Andy Cole and Alan Shearer as the joint record holders for the most goals scored in a single Premier League season.
The 22-year-old’s goal at Craven Cottage was also his 50th of the season in all competitions, a feat that no Premier League player has achieved since the league’s rebranding in 1992.
Guardiola has been amazed by Haaland’s goal-scoring exploits this season, with the manager praising the striker’s talent and work ethic.
Pep Guardiola and striker Haaland
The Spaniard believes that Haaland’s performances have been a significant factor in City’s success this season and has hailed his impact on the team.
“It is a surprise for all of us — maybe not for him — to do what he’s doing in this difficult league but the way he behaves and has done it is for the success of the team,” he said.
“Of course it’s good for him and the team if he breaks the records. It’s a good sign.
“The magnitude of a record is because for a long time it was not broken. All records will be broken one day.
“I’m pretty sure he is going to score more goals in the Premier League until the end of the season.”
In-form City put themselves firmly in control of the title race with their 4-1 rout of Arsenal last week.
But, after being pushed hard by Fulham, Guardiola is not taking anything for granted ahead of City’s home game against West Ham on Wednesday.
“West Ham maybe didn’t do the season they expected but that doesn’t mean the quality is not there,” he said.
“In the last two seasons with David Moyes they have been exceptional.
“The weapons are there, they are a good team. I don’t have doubts about them. In one game anything can happen. We have to be absolutely ready.”
Haaland’s rise to stardom has been remarkable, with the striker establishing himself as one of the most lethal forwards in world football.
The Norwegian’s impressive performances have also attracted interest from other top European clubs, with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly interested in signing him this summer.
However, City remain keen to keep hold of their prized asset and are expected to offer him a new contract in the coming months.
Despite his young age, Haaland has already established himself as one of the best strikers in the world, and his performances this season have put him in the conversation for the Ballon d’Or award.
The Norwegian’s incredible scoring feats have also led to speculation about his future, with a number of top European clubs reportedly interested in signing him.
Guardiola will be aware of the need to continue to develop Haaland’s game and help him reach his full potential, which could see him become one of the all-time greats of the game.
As City look to secure the Premier League title and progress in the Champions League, Guardiola will be hoping that Haaland can continue his remarkable scoring form and help lead the team to further success.
Haaland’s tremendous in-form has earned him comparisons with football’s GOAT (Greatest of All Time) like Messi and Ronaldo.
Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth is ecstatic after scoring his first Premier League goal in the team’s 4-1 victory over Leeds United on Sunday.
The Ghanaian forward, who has struggled for game time, revealed that he had been practicing a celebration with his best friend Jaidon Anthony in the team when he scores his first goal.
“We’ve been planning for weeks for a celebration, and we’ve finally been on the pitch together to do it. It’s even better,” Semenyo said.
The 23-year-old signed for Bournemouth in the January transfer window from Bristol City after an impressive run in the English Championship. He has since found game time hard to come by, starting only two games.
Speaking to the club’s media team after the game, Semenyo expressed his excitement, saying it still feels surreal that he is playing in the Premier League.
“It feels real. It hasn’t sunk in yet. I am happy the ball went in. I just hit it as hard as I can. I am happy,” Semenyo said.
Scoring his first goal in the league, Semenyo hopes it will be the beginning of good things to come, and he can contribute more to the team’s success.
Regardless of how well or poorly Leicester’s fight for Premier League survival turns out, they will sell James Maddison this summer.
The Telegraph suggest the Foxes will accept bids north of £45million for their prized asset to help balance the club’s books following a tough financial year.
England midfielder Maddison, 26, has just one year left to run on his current deal at the King Power Stadium and is wanted by a host of clubs including Manchester United, Tottenhamand Newcastle.
Since joining Leicester in 2018, the Coventry native has established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading creative forces — racking up an impressive 20 direct goal contributions last term.
And despite injury issues and his side’s struggles for results, Maddison has still managed nine goals and seven assists in 25 top-flight outings this season.
With the player desperate to play Champions League football, Spurs could find themselves at a disadvantage in the race after yesterday’s late 4-3 loss at Anfield dented their top-four hopes.
However, their owner Daniel Levy has previously been reported as a big admirer of Maddison and is expected to go all out to lure him to North London.
Before any exit is agreed, Maddison has five games to try and keep his current club in the top flight, starting with a crunch home encounter against lowly Everton this evening.

Erling Haaland netted his 50th goal of the season at Fulham yesterday
Football Insider say Manchester City are ready to open talks with their Norwegian scoring sensation Erling Haaland, 22,over a new contract.
Crystal Palace talisman Wilfried Zaha, 30, is wanted by Arsenal, Chelsea, Juventus and Barcelona according to The Telegraph.
Italian media claim Manchester Unitedand Paris Saint-Germainboth had scouts present at Roma’s 1-1 draw with AC Milan on Saturday watching 25-year-old ex-Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham.
Everton’s status in the Premier League is in jeopardy due to their offensive difficulties.
The Merseysiders have failed to create or capitalise on chances consistently this season and now find themselves embroiled in a scrap for survival as a result.
The return of talismanic centre-forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin from a lengthy injury looks like a major boost ahead of a pivotal run-in, however.
Ahead of tonight’s six-pointer with fellow strugglers Leicester, we look at how Sean Dyche must make the most of the striker’s presence to help solve his side’s attacking issues.
Demanding more
After their recent goalless draw with Crystal Palace, Toffees centre-half James Tarkowski urged his attacking team-mates to step their game up.
The ex-Burnley ace said: “We were quite disappointed, we’re in a real battle and we need more.
“We had the opportunity to pick up three points. To grind it out with 10 men is nice but there’s way more to come from us.
“We defended well — we had conceded a few goals recently, so that’s a plus. But we need to do more and expect more from our forward players.
“We have some really talented boys but we need more from them.”

Cal for help
In a timley boost, Calvert-Lewin returned to the side against Crystal Palace for the first time since February.
As well as his injury woes, the 11-cap England international has endured a tough season on the pitch — scoring just one goal in 907 minutes this season and missing four of his five big chances.
However, he has added quality to Everton’s attack in other ways, creating five chances and completing 12 of his 19 attempted take-ons.
Calvert-Lewin’s runs into the box also drag defenders out of position, while his aerial prowess helps Everton get up the pitch.
So far, he has won an impressive 44 aerial duels this term and that suggests 26-year-old can be a focal point against the Foxes this evening.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin adds a new dimension to Everton’s attack
Dom’s not enough
While Calvert-Lewin’s return is a plus, Everton boss Dyche believes it will take far more than just his re-introduction to fix the Toffees’ attacking troubles.
And the no-nonsense tactician has also suggested that rushing the No9 back from knocks previously has done little to aid the cause.
Dyche, 51, said: “I haven’t got magic dust, so we have to work on a process that can create more so the players eventually take ownership of that.
“But it’s not just about one player. Dom is a very good player but it’s about others doing it as well. When we came in, his physical stats were nowhere near where they should have been in the past.
“It seems the previous process here was ‘get him fit, put him back in the team’. But we can’t keep doing that because it hasn’t worked.”
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s impact has been limited by injuries this season

Everton’s goalscoring issues may actually stem from problems with their supply line.
Alex Iwobi has registered six assists this season, while wingers Demarai Gray and Dwight McNeil have so far combined to create 13 big chances.
The latter duo have also completed a total of 71 crosses — an area in which Calvert-Lewin thrives — but all three will have to step up their efforts if the Toffees are to survive.
Fighting Foxes
Next, Everton clash with Dean Smith’s Leicester.
The Foxes find themselves with the opposite problem. They are able to find the back of the net regularly, scoring 44 goals, but struggle defensively.
They have managed only six clean sheets in the top tier this season, the last of which came against West Ham back in November.
Tonight’s trip therefore represents a golden opportunity for Everton to rediscover their goalscoring touch — if they do not, they may be headed for a first-ever Premier League relegation.
A new, long-term contract withManchester Unitedhas been inked by Alejandro Garnacho.
The 18-year-old winger signed a contract with the Premier League team on Friday that would keep him there until June 2028.
Garnacho has played for the Red Devils’ first team in 31 games, and it looks like there will be many more.
After graduating from the United academy, the player said: “When I joined this magnificent club, I dreamed of making my debut, playing at Old Trafford, scoring my first goal, and winning trophies with this emblem on my breast.
“I feel very proud and emotional to have experienced these moments already, together with my family who have supported me every step of the way.
“We are all humbled to have this chance to continue our journey at Manchester United and I have already begun to work on achieving the next set of targets and ambitions.
“The manager and his coaching staff have helped me to improve in every way, and with their support, I am developing each day to help the team to be successful.
“I am relishing the future and can’t wait to create more special memories with this group, in front of our amazing supporters.”
The teenager has been out since last month due to an ankle injury, but is set to make his return as United attempt to secure a top-four finish and win the FA Cup.
United boss Erik ten Hag on Friday revealed Garnacho will not be allowed to represent Argentina when they host the U20 World Cup, which starts on May 20.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s comeback to the Premier League in 2021 did not go as expected.
Under Ole Gunner Solskjaer, Manchester United had just finished in second place, and following a respectable summer of new additions, there was a growing belief that they could contend for the championship.
Along with Ronaldo, Raphael Varane joined after a successful stint in Real Madrid, and Jadon Sancho was recruited from Borussia Dortmund.
While Ronaldo had a splendid season individually, United ended the season in sixth with their lowest-ever point tally.
Solskjaer was sacked midseason after damaging defeats to Watford, Liverpool and Manchester City.
Raphael Rangnick was appointed on an interim basis, but he, too, couldn’t do anything to stem the rot.
Ronaldo’s impact on dressing room
It has always been up to debate why a team that was performing so well in the 2020/2021 season couldn’t replicate such performances, especially with the arrival of a serial winner and proven goalscorer like Ronaldo.
As the Athletic reports, the squad might have been overwhelmed by Ronaldo’s presence in the dressing room.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is a known perfectionist. From his gym routines to his high desire to win constantly, it looks like this had a negative impact on the rest of the squad. In his final interview withPiers Morgan as a United player, he openly condemned the club’s facilities.
Even more interestingly, video analysts observed that there was a specific player who always tried to pass to Ronaldo to receive praise. His form dipped with Ronaldo’s presence at the club given as a part reason. The player is not mentioned.
Among the players who lost their form include Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire.
Rojo slams Ole Gunnar
It was earlier reported that former Manchester United defender, Marcos Rojo has launched a scathing attack on his former manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and embattled club captain, Harry Maguire.
Rojo plied his professional trade with the Red Devils between 2014 and 2021 but was rarely used during his time at Old Trafford.
In a no-holds-barred interview, the combative centre-back revealed Solskjaer had informed him that Maguire had to play every week despite the high-profile errors he committed.
Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen has been regarded by Italian striker Mario Balotelli as one of the best players since the renowned Lionel Messi era.
The former Manchester City striker said that Rafael Leao of AC Milan would one day be as good as Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.
Osimhen and Leao might become elite players, according to Balotelli, if they keep their focus.
The former Liverpool forward recently appeared on Muschi Selvaggio’s podcast.
Balotelli said:
“As long as Messi plays, I will continue to say that he is the strongest player around. Afterwards, perhaps, it will be the turn of Haaland and Mbappe.
“Also keep an eye on Leao and Osimhen: with the right head, they can reach the level of Erling and Kylian.”
Why Osimhen didn’t join Arsenal
Meanwhile, Osimhen once had a chance to join English Premier League club, Arsenal but he preferred a move to Germany, where he joined Wolfsburg in 2016.
He initially signed a pre-contract with the Bundesliga outfit and by 2017, he officially joined the club.
The striker had been noticed following his exploits at the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile, where he scored ten goals.
Osimhen admitted the Gunners was a good team for young players but felt the Bundesliga outfit was his best move.
Bayern intensify interest in Osimhen
Earlier, it was reported that Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are reportedly set to offer everything possible to land Victor Osimhen at the Allianz Arena.
Quite a number of clubs are on the trail of the Nigerian international, who has netted 25 goals for Napoli this season.
The Italian club have one hand on the Scudetto already and are just one win away from claiming the Serie A title for the first time in more than three decades.
In his first game in command after taking over for Cristian Stellini, Pedro Porro and Heung-Min Son’s goals allowed the interim manager to end the team’s losing streak.
Mason has experience in the Spurs managerial spotlight; two years ago, he served as caretaker after Jose Mourinho left the club and oversaw the Carabao Cup final.
Mason was ecstatic to see a response from his team following a 6-1 defeat to Newcastle in their previous match. This shows their drive.
He told BT Sport: “In football, you can win, lose or draw but the most important [thing] is that we react together. I have a team that’s willing to fight.
“I thought in the second half, we were outstanding [with] the character we showed after last Sunday. I hope the fans can see that we were a team today.
“Those players in there, I know I’ve got men who when they pull together, they’re a very strong team. That’s my job, to inspire them and make sure we act as a team.”
Goalscorer Son, who was supplied for his point-clinching finish by regular partner Harry Kane, suggested Spurs’ performance was born out of frustration over recent failings.
He said: “I thought we didn’t deserve to be 2-0 down in the first half. We played quite well, we had the chances to score. But we weren’t clinical enough.
“We didn’t want to let the fans down, we wanted to give everything and that was the dressing room speech. We couldn’t let the game go. We were really angry about it.
“Football is all about the fans. The last week was unacceptable, and we didn’t want to repeat that. With them, we really appreciated their support. They were fighting with us”.

After spending £45 million to transfer from Leeds to the Premier League champions last summer, Phillips, 27, has had trouble making an impression under Pep Guardiola.
Jurgen Klopp may consider the England midfielder as a replacement as the Reds appear to be priced out of a deal for Jude Bellingham in the upcoming months.
The Daily Star say that the Anfield boss is desperate to rebuild his squad for the 2023-24 campaign and the 26-cap international would bring some much-needed stability to the Reds’ engine room.
With just seven league appearances this season, Phillips is said to be keen on a fresh start this summer after being frozen out of the squad by Guardiola after the World Cup.
Injuries and a lack of match fitness have not helped the midfielder’s case at the Etihad — the Yorkshireman underwent shoulder surgery back in September which kept him out until the tournament in Qatar.
But with City almost certain to be in the running to sign Bellingham among other stars during the transfer window, Phillips’ departure may be best for all parties.
The report suggests that the Manchester club would demand a fee in the region of £35m for a player that Guardiola openly criticised earlier in the season for being overweight.
Before to Arsenal’s Premier League matchup with Manchester City,Mikel Arteta has disclosed that Granit Xhaka is a big doubt.
On Wednesday, April 26, the two table-toppers will square off at the Etihad Stadium in a match that has the potential to decide the championship.
Due to losses in three of their most recent games, the Gunners have hit a bit of a difficult patch at the time of the match.
ESPN reported Arsenal’s most recent outing ended in a 3-3 epic draw with relegation-battlers Southampton, with the result dealing them a massive blow in their title bid.
While the north Londoners are still topping the charts, there are only five points separating them and second-placed City, who have two games in hand.
Arteta’s charges will therefore be desperate to earn a positive result when they lock horns against the reigning English champions.
Xhaka doubt for Man City clash
However, they may have to do that without Granit Xhaka, who has been one of the club’s standout performers in their title bid.
Arteta disclosed on Tuesday that the Swiss midfielder is a big doubt for the Etihad Stadium trip through illness.
The Switzerland international is yet to resume training, having also missed Arsenal’s 3-3 draw against Southampton last Friday.
“Yeah Granit has been out and hopefully he will be able to train today. But he’s still a doubt,” Arteta admitted via Metro UK.
“The rest are okay,” he added.
Arsenal players break down
It was previously reported that Arsenal stars broke down in tears after their third consecutive draw – that time against Southampton in their third consecutive game.
Captain, Martin Odegaard sparked late drama with a shot from outside the box before Bukayo Saka scored the third after a scramble in the box.
However, Arsenal players realised that in terms of their title aspirations, the game might as well have been lost instead of yet another draw.
As Wolves inch closer to Premier League safety, manager Julen Lopetegui believes the team has disproven the critics.
At Molineux, Wolves defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 thanks to an own goal by Joachim Andersen and a late penalty by Ruben Neves.
They now have five games remaining and are tied for 13th place with the Eagles, nine points above the relegation zone.
After winning four of their previous five games at home, Lopetegui’s team is on the verge of completing its sixth consecutive top-flight campaign. He was appointed with the team in last place.
He said: “They have been very important victories, we need points to achieve our aim. Four months ago all the people thought it was impossible. Now, it’s at least possible so we have to fight very hard to achieve our aim.
“It was a very bad situation but now we have hope and it’s possible. We have worked very hard, we have to continue because we haven’t achieved anything.
“It has been a very hard match. We were playing against a very strong team. They have played their last matches at a top level.
“We have to work a lot, to achieve our aim we have to get more points. It’s an important victory but we have to keep on working.
“We have to get more points. We have to be ready for the next five games.”
Andersen unwittingly put Wolves ahead after just three minutes when he turned in Neves’ corner from close range.
It was a goal Palace never recovered from but the hosts still needed Jose Sa to save well from Albert Sambi Lokonga in the first half.
With a slender lead the hosts were edging towards victory and Palace gave them another gift in stoppage time.
Sam Johnstone collected a throw-in but a heavy touch left him lunging into Pedro Neto. The goalkeeper escaped a red card but was beaten by Neves from the spot.
Palace boss Roy Hodgson, after a first defeat since his return last month, said: “Credit to Wolves, we had such a lot of the ball in the second half and some of the football was very good. They defended well.
“It was hard for us, with that number of players, to create a lot of space to get the equaliser I believed we were going to get and we deserved.
“Then the worst thing happens when you get robbed of those last three or four minutes where there is hope.
“I don’t think 2-0 is a fair reflection on how the game went. We do have a healthy margin to the bottom three but I’m not interested in trying to preach to the players that we need X amount of points to stay up.
“I enjoyed the performance but of course you don’t enjoy defeats.”
After an impressive performance in Newcastle United’s annihilation of Tottenham that included one of the seasons best assists, Joe Willock was compared to Ronaldinho and Luka Modric.
The midfielder has been given the nickname “Willockinho” by his Newcastle teammate Bruno Guimaraes, and on Sunday, he more than lived up to it.
In a 6-1 victory, Willock—whom coach Eddie Howe is supporting for an England call-up—created what may have been the game’s most memorable play when he sent Alexander Isak away for the fourth of five goals in the opening twenty-one minutes with a magnificent outside-of-the-boot pass.
That was Willock’s fifth assist in the Premier League this season to go with three goals as one of the key men in a Newcastle team closing on Champions League qualification.
Only Kieran Trippier (five) and Guimaraes (four) created more than Willock’s three chances against Spurs, and the Brazil international was suitably impressed.
Guimaraes told reporters: “Willockinho, with his new hair today… he looked like Ronaldinho and played like him, too.
“An amazing through ball for [Isak’s] goal. What a pass. Only Modric can play a pass like that. It was amazing.”
Newcastle climbed back up to third with the win, now six points ahead of their fifth-placed opponents and still with a game in hand.
Didier Drogba, a Chelsea stalwart, has advised Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen not to joinParis Saint-Germain this summer, saying the French club is not a place for him to continue playing football.
Given his outstanding performances for Napoli, where he currently leads the goalscoring table, Osimhen has so far this season captivated the hearts of many football fans in Nigeria and Italy.
This has made the former Lille strongman become a target for many clubs most especially him being linked with a move to the Premier League with clubs like Chelsea, Man United and Arsenal said to be interested.
Osimhen on the other hand has not really made his final decision about where to play his game next season as he is currently focusing on helping Napoli win the title.
And to make things sweet, Napoli are in good position to win the league title and Osimhen could also be the first Nigerian to take home the Golden Boot award in the Serie A.
Drogba’s advise to Osimhen
According to the report on Naija Footballer, Drogba who was one of the finest African strikers to have played in the Premier League made it clear that Osimhen should not move to France.
Berbatov wants Osimhen at Man United
It had reported how ahead of the forthcoming summer transfer window, former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov disclosed that he wants to see Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen, at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are also eyeing the Spurs forward Harry Kane, but Berbatov believes that the England striker is already of age.
United are desperate to sign a proven striker and are already making moves to land Kane before the start of the coming season.
The 29-year-old has already notched in over 200 Premier League goals, including 23 this season, but he is yet to win any major trophy in his career.
After falling down by two goals inside of the first 14 minutes of Friday’s game at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal was forced to settle for a point.
Before halftime, Gabriel Martinelli gave the Saints hope after Carlos Alcaraz had scored one and helped Theo Walcott on another. But, Duje Caleta-Car headed in the third goal for the Saints.
But Martin Odegaard curled in an impressive goal in the 88th minute and Bukayo Saka had Arsenal on level terms in added time to deny the Premier League’s bottom side.
The Gunners have now dropped points in three successive matches, but Arteta was pleased with the way his side fought back against Southampton.
“We made it very difficult again for ourselves – mistakes are part of football, but the way we reacted, I love my players more than ever,” he told Sky Sports.
“It is incredible. We were on the way back, we conceded again with a sloppy goal but in the end we should have won the game.
“We created enough chances and opportunities, but it didn’t happen and we are disappointed.
“You can’t concede three goals in this league. If you concede three like we did in a sloppy way it is very difficult to win matches.
“This young team reacts in a way that is incredible. When it is against the odds but the chances they created and the spirit they had it was a joy to watch.
Arsenal are five points clear of second-place Manchester City, but they have played two games more than their in-form title rivals and travel to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
“It hasn’t changed,” Arteta said. “Obviously the task is even bigger but now we have to do the simple things better and cut out mistakes and then you will win games.
“The [Man City game] is not a final because there are still six games to go. The concern is turning around these moments especially if the players in some moments are in doubt.
“In football you go through moments when you make errors and are not in a good moment but you have to come away from that.
“I have not seen anybody hiding – the opposite. They are willing to do more and more.
“Today is a good example of the level they can show, how capable they are to playagainst a different type of opponent. The spirit is incredible and we have to try and do it again.”
After a remarkable run of results under Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal have become the clear favourites to defeat Manchester City to the Premier League title this season.
That fantasy, however, is set to come crashing down after Arteta’s team lost three of their most recent games.
The north Londoners have suffered three damaging draws in all those matches, with the most recent ending in a 3-3 epic draw at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
The Sun reports Arsenal had to come from two goals down to secure the point after Carlos Alcaraz and Theo Walcott handed the Saints an early lead.
The result still has the Gunners topping the charts with a five-point advantage, with only six games left to end the season.
However, Man City do have an edge over them as they have two games in hand, with both teams also scheduled to face off at the Etihad in what has been touted as a potential title decider.
Speaking after Arsenal’s draw against Southampton, the Brazilian striker highlighted two key reasons why the north Londoners have stuttered in recent weeks.
According to the former Man City striker, lack of experience and focus has contributed to Arsenal’s recent struggles.
After the final whistle of their Premier League match against Southampton on Friday, April 21, Arsenal’s stars struggled to contain their emotions.
During the game, the Gunners lost for the third time in a row, dealing Mikel Arteta’s team yet another setback in their title defence.
The north Londoners were looking to bounce back after dropping points in their most recent match against West Ham United by defeating the relegation-threatened Saints.
However, The Telegraph reports the league leaders faltered yet again, with two late goals from Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard rescuing a point for them at the Emirates.
Carlos Alcaraz opened the scoring for the visitors just seconds into the kick-off before former Arsenal ace Theo Walcott doubled the advantage for the Saints in the 14th minute.
While Gabriel Martinelli went on to draw one back for the hosts in the 20th minute, Southampton restored their two-goal advantage in the 66th minute via Duje Caleta-Car.
The visitors looked on course to sink Arsenal, only for Odegaard and Saka to score late on to earn their side a 3-3 draw.
Arsenal stars in tears
Emotions got the better of Arsenal stars after the full-time whistle, as they were spotted in tears shortly after the match.
Odegaard was among the Arsenal stars who were pictured dejected as it dawned on them they were on the verge of bottling the league.
Whereas Arteta’s men have a five-point advantage over second-placed Man City, they still have to contend with a trip to the Etihad and a clash against rivals Chelsea before the season ends.
Additionally, City, who are the defending champions, now have two games in hand as the campaign enters its homestretch.
Moises Caicedo of Brighton and Hove Albion is optimistic that he will have more opportunities to sign with a Premier League elite team, although admitting that his failed January transfer to Arsenal was “tough.”
In the most recent transfer window, Brighton reportedly turned down offers from Arsenal that may have reached £70 million, despite the 21-year-old player publicly declaring his desire to sign with the league leaders.
However, Caicedo ultimately decided to stay, and in March he even reached an agreement on a new, long-term contract with the Seagulls.
Arsenal were initially expected to make another approach for Caicedo at the end of the season, while Liverpool have also been linked with a move as they look to rebuild their midfield.
While Caicedo struggled amid Arsenal’s overtures, he does not believe he has missed his chance to play at the top level.
“I’m sure I’m going to have many more opportunities,” Caicedo told The Telegraph. “That’s why I continue to do things well.
“I’d seen a lot of Arsenal before knowing that there was a possibility of me signing for them. I watched them and I liked them because they have very young, talented players and some stars, but they always have that mindset of wanting more.
“It was tough. When I didn’t end up going, lots of people would make fun of me on Instagram. I didn’t check my social media because it would hurt me to see things.”
Roberto De Zerbi has led Brighton to seventh in the Premier League table and into an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United, and Caicedo says the Italian’s intervention was key to him staying at The Amex Stadium.
“He approached me, we spoke and he told me to be calm, that it wouldn’t be the last club that would come in for me, I’d have more opportunities,” Caicedo recalled.
“He told me to keep on doing what I was doing and that I’ll see in the future I wouldn’t be sorry about staying.
“I just want to have a really good season with Brighton now, and then we’ll see what happens next season.”
West Ham reached the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League on Thursday, and David Moyes and Declan Rice delighted in giving back to the team’s supporters after a trying season.
With a 4-1 home win and a 5-2 overall victory over Gent, thanks to goals from Lucas Paqueta, Rice, and a brace from Michail Antonio, West Ham advanced.
After reaching the Europa League final four the previous season, Moyes’ team advanced to its second continental semi-final in as many years as a result.
With West Ham battling relegation in the Premier League, sitting just four points above the bottom three, Moyes hailed the Hammers’ achievements in balancing European football and domestic challenges.
He told BT Sport: “It is a brilliant achievement. To do it two years in a row is special, it really is. It doesn’t happen very often so we’ll look forward to the semi-finals.
“It’s been tough for the fans [this year]. We’ve had so many positive things coming from European football that it has built a great relationship with the players.
“It was really important we got to the semi-finals. Gent caused us problems and we had to work hard for the win.”
Rice’s 58th-minute strike put the Hammers in full control of the tie after Paqueta and Antonio’s first goal had put West Ham into the lead following Hugo Cuypers’ first-half opener.
The West Ham captain echoed his manager’s sentiment, relishing the impact the result could have on the fans after a difficult season.
Rice told BT Sport: “I can’t put it into words. Another semi-final back-to-back. The place was rocking and you felt it. To score and the lads play really well, ah, it was a top night for the club.
“In the last couple of games we’ve not got off to the best start, waiting for teams to score to react. But when we got that goal we felt the buzz and the energy. In the second half it could have been six or seven.”
As for his goal, driving over the halfway line before drilling into the bottom-left corner, Rice sees it as one of his best finishes for the club.
“When I pick the ball up in those positions and have space to drive into I feel good,” the England midfielder added. “That’s when I feel I’m at my best. It doesn’t happen all the time.
“It definitely goes down as one of my best goals for West Ham. I didn’t even know how to celebrate. I was just so happy to score, let alone it be like that, so it was special.”
“There’s obviously not been a lot for west ham fans to cheer for this season but they will be happy tonight and to put a smile on their faces is unbelievable.”
West Ham will face AZ Alkmaar in the semi-finals after the Eredivisie side won on penalties against Anderlecht, who squandered a 2-0 lead from the first leg.
“AZ Alkmaar have had good momentum all year and have a good young team with lots of new talent,” Moyes added.
Pep Guardiola said he was “exhausted.”Manchester City demonstrated their street smarts in the Champions League by defeating Bayern Munich 4-1 on the road to the semifinals.
The Premier League champions drew 1-1 at Allianz Arena eight days after winning the first leg 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium to set up a matchup against Real Madrid, the current holders.
Erling Haaland missed a penalty in the first half, but after the interval, he gave City the lead with his 48th goal of the year.
Joshua Kimmich denied City an 11th successive victory late on after a second harsh penalty award of the game – Manuel Akanji punished for what was adjudged to be handball.
City are in the hunt for a Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup treble after advancing to a third successive European semi-final.
Guardiola, who took charge of the Premier League champions for a 400th time when he came up against his former club Bayern on Wednesday, feels their experience is standing them in good stead.
He told BT Sport: “We struggled in the first half. [Dayot] Upamecano broke all the lines down our left side and we struggled with [Kingsley] Coman.
“The finishing from Erling was really, really good. He is so young. The experience that we have in this competition, the players feel it a lot, they want to do it really well. The second half was much, much better since minute one.”
City face Championship side Sheffield United in an FA Cup semi-final on Saturday and Guardiola is concerned fatigue will be an issue.
He added: “We are exhausted. I don’t know how we recover to play against Sheffield United [in the FA Cup semi-final].
“Now is a tough moment for the game on Saturday, but we have to play then as [Manchester) United play in the Europa League [so play Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup on Sunday].”
Gary Cahill contends that Chelsea’s underperforming players must perform or risk being let go this summer.
Last Saturday, Brighton easily defeated Cahill’s former team 2-1 at home, dropping the Blues to 11th place in the Premier League.
In the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tonight at Stamford Bridge, Frank Lampard’s team will try to overcome a 2-0 deficit against Real Madrid.
Speaking ahead of the game, Cahill said: “Ultimately, if people are not playing up to their level then they leave or they get sold. That’s my experience at the club.
“As soon as you’re not cutting it, you’re out the team or you’re sold and they get the next best thing in.
“As a player I’d be looking and thinking am I playing to the level I should be? If I’m not, I’d be worried in terms of thinking I’m not going to be here.
Chelsea have a mountain to climb after last week’s 2-0 defeat at the Bernabeu
“The pressure’s on at the big clubs and that’s the difference. Your job’s sometimes easy because you play with better players but the pressure around you is 10 times more than it is when you’re playing at a smaller club.
“If they’re not playing well enough I’m sure the club will move them on, so there’s pressure from everyone.
“Playing for the badge at Chelsea — from my experience and from Lamps’ experience and the lads before us — is to go on and challenge for trophies.
“That’s the whole reason you try and get into the top teams because you want to try and win stuff.”
Cahill, who played forChelsea between 2012 and 2019, highlighted the troubles that come hand-in-hand with the club’s overloaded squad.
The ex-England international, 37, added: “When you’ve got so many players, man-managing is really, really difficult, especially at a big club. You’ve got players all thinking they should play.
“You’re leaving players on the bench that are slightly not happy, you’re leaving a lot of players in the stand.
“It’s really hard to manage that group of players and get the best out of them.”
After making a full recovery from his injury, Christian Eriksen anticipates that Manchester United will fight to the end of a demanding season.
The 2-0 Premier League victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday marked the Danish international’s first start since January.
After appearing off the bench against Everton and Sevilla, Eriksen is back to help United compete for additional hardware in the FA Cup and Europa League.
But he says it is imperative Erik ten Hag’s side do not neglect the league, as they aim to secure Champions League football for next season.
“Every game now until the end is going to be very important,” he told MUTV. “Someone is going to drop down, [and] someone’s going to go in front.
“So if we stay on the front foot like we are now, we’re going to be in a very good position and be safe for the Champions League before the season is done.”
A post-EFL Cup wobble looks to be behind United, though they conceded twice late on against Sevilla in Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final first leg.
Victory over Forest, particularly with several key stars on the sidelines, emphasised what Eriksen feels to be a strong squad ethos over recent months.
“They’ve impressed me,” he added. “They’ve kept the intensity, they’ve kept the level for how they play. The games, everything, even from the outside, has been looking good.
“If you take into account how we started [the season], it’s a completely different feeling around the club and also on the pitch. The feeling around the boys is really good.”
With three victories in a row since taking over as Crystal Palace’s manager, Roy Hodgson has put his critics to shame.
Following the firing of Patrick Vieira, the 75-year-old ex-England manager returned from retirement last month to attempt and keep his boyhood club from being demoted.
Hodgson has rapidly reinvigorated a club that had lost 13 straight games and was headed for the Championship before his arrival, despite much scepticism surrounding his appointment.
We take a closer look at the wily coach’s impressive impact.
Build from the back
Saturday’s 2-0 win at Southampton was only the third time this season Palace had combined a Premier League victory with a clean sheet.
Though Eberechi Eze’s second-half brace stole the headlines, the Saints started on the front foot and Hodgson’s backline had to weather an early storm.
Their dogged defending — combined with some woeful finishing from the hosts — allowed the Eagles to grow into the contest and eventually show a ruthless cutting edge.
Hodgson explained: “I thought Southampton were good in the first half. They played with a lot of energy and intensity and made runs behind us which stretched our defending capacity to the hilt.
“We got through that, largely down to a back four that did a really good job under that pressure.”
One player who has starred under Hodgson’s watch is creative midfielder Eze.
Remarkably, the ex-QPR ace had managed only four goals in 28 top-flight appearances under Vieira this term, but already has three in three under Hodgson.
The 24-year-old’s technical ability has never been in doubt, with England manager Gareth Southgate previously name-checking Eze as a player firmly in his thoughts.
Hodgson, who coached the Three Lions between 2012 and 2016, thinks his fellow Londoner has what it takes to star on the international stage.
He said: “If you are talking about a player’s ambition, as young as he is, there’s a massive possibility for him to keep improving and doing well with every Premier League game he plays.
“If I was him, I would be saying: ‘I’m so good, that I’m going to make that [England] my ambition’.”
Confidence is king
While statistics are one way of measuring a team’s improvement, confidence is an equally important factor to consider.
Since gaining a crucial late victory over Leicester, Palace’s players are now playing with a level of freedom not seen for some time.
Prior to seeing off the Foxes, the tactician said: “Our main task, as I see it, having taken over a group which is clearly stronger technically than the one we left behind two years ago, is to make sure those players don’t lose faith or start thinking we aren’t capable.
“It’s so easy to lose confidence and make you doubt all the things you think you’re good at doing.”
Inspired choice
Palace took plenty of stick for disposing of Vieira, who had endured a tough run of fixtures prior to his sacking.
But regardless of whether the Frenchman would have turned things around, Hodgson’s temporary return has proven an inspired choice from the Eagles hierarchy.
Should his remarkable winning run continue, speculation may start relating to an extension of his contract — though all sides are still said to view the venture as a short-term exercise.
If this is indeed Hodgson’s managerial swansong, it is proving a fitting farewell for one of football’s most versatile and underrated coaches.
Saka has been a key player in his team’s surprising Premier League title challenge, despite missing a penalty when the Gunners lost a two-goal lead in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with West Ham.
He has already established himself as a regular for England and has attracted the attention of several major European clubs after being named one of the game’s most promising young players.
But two-time Premier League winner Lescott only sees Saka, 21, leaving North London if Arteta departs the Emirates.
Speaking during a visit to LiveScore HQ, Lescott said: “Saka could play for anyone.
“I don’t think any club would not take him and it wouldn’t surprise me if he went on to play for a Real Madrid or Barcelona.
“But I don’t see it any time soon, if at all. He’s an Arsenal fan and he loves it.
“I think as long as Arteta is manager there, he won’t think about leaving.
“The moment Arteta leaves, then maybe, because I think he’s probably the only manager that could convince him to go elsewhere.”
Surprising start
Lescott, 40, played alongside Arteta for three years at Everton and has been pleasantly surprised by the Spaniard’s successful transition to the dugout.
“But definitely, he’s got to be regarded up there because Arsenal haven’t been real contenders for so long and we’ve seen how hard it is for other coaches to do that.
“I think to create that environment takes time and obviously Arsenal were right to believe in the process.”
Lescott admits he did not expect the Gunners to still be fighting for league glory this late in the campaign.
The former England ace added: “I knew Mikel had the abilities to be a coach but I didn’t see it going the way it has so early in his managerial career.
“The consistency Arsenal have shown throughout the season is amazing. I was sceptical as to whether they could maintain it when Gabriel Jesus got injured.
“But Eddie Nketiah came in and did exceptionally well, while the team found a way to win — and I think that’s been key.”
