  • Randy Abbey’s GHS20m defamation case against Abronye DC thrown out by High Court

Randy Abbey’s GHS20m defamation case against Abronye DC thrown out by High Court

The Accra High Court has thrown out a defamation case brought by COCOBOD Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ransford Anertey Abbey, widely known as Randy Abbey.

The court struck out the case after finding that it was improperly filed, as it was initiated through COCOBOD’s Legal Department instead of a private lawyer.

The decision was handed down on Monday, January 19, 2026, by Justice Halimah El-Alawa Abdul Baasit at the High Court, General Jurisdiction 2, in Accra.

Dr Abbey filed the suit on August 26, 2025, in his capacity as an individual against Kwame Baffoe, also called Abronye, accusing him of making broadcasts and publications that he claimed were defamatory and damaging to his reputation.

The action was pursued in Dr Abbey’s personal capacity, seeking compensation for the alleged harm caused to his reputation by the publications.

Despite this, the writ of summons and statement of claim were prepared and filed by COCOBOD’s Legal Department, with the organisation’s Legal Director representing the plaintiff.

The defendant raised a preliminary objection, arguing that the case was invalid because a state institution’s legal department could not legally act for an individual in a personal defamation matter where the institution was not a party to the suit.

When the case came up for ruling, the defendant’s lawyer chose not to proceed with an earlier application after the court granted that option. Justice Abdul Baasit then went ahead to deliver her ruling.

In an extensive decision, the court stated that defamation is a personal wrong (in personam) meant to protect the reputation of an individual, not that of an organisation.

Justice Abdul Baasit explained that even though the alleged publications were linked to Dr Abbey’s position as COCOBOD CEO, the institution was not listed as a party to the case. For that reason, COCOBOD’s Legal Department had no lawful authority to file the writ or act on behalf of Dr Abbey in his personal case.

“The Plaintiff having sued in his personal capacity ought to procure the service of a private legal practitioner to represent him,” the judge ruled.

The court determined that the participation of COCOBOD’s Legal Department made the writ of summons and statement of claim procedurally flawed, since state legal resources cannot be used for matters of a purely personal nature.

Justice Abdul Baasit therefore struck out the writ of summons and statement of claim in full, declaring them incompetent before the court.

The court also directed that no costs should be awarded against either side.

Meanwhile, legal commentators, including lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor, say the ruling affirms long-established principles on the use of public resources and the role of state legal departments, especially in personal actions brought by public officials.

The decision highlights the clear difference between cases filed in an official capacity for a public institution and those pursued personally, even when the issues relate to an official position.

At the time this report was filed, there had been no immediate response from Dr Abbey or his lawyers on whether a new case would be filed with a private lawyer.

The ruling was delivered in open court and has since been certified as a true copy by the High Court registry.

In September last year, Abronye DC, was referred to the NPP’s National Disciplinary Committee over alleged misconduct. This was contained in a petition submitted by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong.

According to the letter,  Abronye DC damaged the party’s image and unity, hence the recent development.“Unbecoming of a member” and “gravely detrimental to the image, unity, and integrity of the organisation,” part of the letter read.

The charges against Abronye DC included making derogatory remarks against the party’s flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, where he was said to have stated that ‘even the elephant has more wisdom than Honourable Agyapong.

Additionally, Abronye DC has also been accused of disclosing while manipulating the contents of a disciplinary committee report, which investigated the factors behind the NPP’s lost in the 2024 elections. Although the report by the committee has been withheld from the general public.

In a related development, the New Patriotic Party directed petitions against Deputy Director of Communications, Ernest Owusu Bempah, to the National Council for consideration.

This was announced in a statement released by on Tuesday September 24 2025, after the party said it received several petitions from members demanding his removal from office over a conduct of “grave concern”

“The Party reaffirms its unwavering commitment to upholding discipline, safeguarding its values, and ensuring that all matters are handled with fairness and transparency” the statement signed by the general secretary Justin Kodua indicated. The National Council is the highest decision-making body between congresses.Reacting to the petitions, Mr. Owusu-Bempah noted “All the statements I have made have been about leadership. I said Kennedy Agyapong will deal with galamsey even if it involves his mother or sister. I did not insult anyone”.

  • Otto Addo still Ghana’s coach – Randy Abbey responds to dismissal claims

Otto Addo still Ghana’s coach – Randy Abbey responds to dismissal claims

Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Dr Randy Abbey, has intimated that Black Stars head coach Otoo Addo remains the team’s coach, stressing that “his employers have not said they are done with him”.

Otto Addo’s second coming as a Black Stars head coach was met with mixed reactions. While some supported him as the most familiar to handle the team, others questioned his maturity, his tactical prowess, especially after the Black Stars’ group-stage exit at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)2022 under his leadership.

However, his recent record as the first coach in Ghana’s football history to oversee the team’s qualification to the world’s biggest football tournament, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, twice, has sparked some confidence from fans about his competency, as well as questions surrounding his long-term future due to his inconsistencies in performances.

In reaction, Dr Abbey, speaking during an engagement with Asempa FM, acknowledged the public’s concerns but stated that, as it stands, the employers of the former Dortmund coach haven’t expressed their disinterest in Otto Addo’s role as head coach, hence the need to shift all focus on celebrating the feat he has attained.

“From the time we came in, look at the statistics. Otto Addo is the head coach of the Black Stars, and that has not changed. I don’t have any issues with the ongoing discussions. He has a contract, and his contract has not ended. His employers have not said they are done with him. He has qualified for the World Cup, and he must be celebrated for that, but every Ghanaian deserves to have an opinion, and Otto Addo remains the Black Stars coach,” Dr Abbey said.

Responding to a question about whether the committee had identified any weaknesses within Addo’s technical set-up, Dr Abbey replied, “Except God, everyone has weaknesses.”

The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, earlier noted that the dismissal of Otto Addo is not a solo decision he can make, but several factors will need to be considered before a decision about the coach’s future is made.

“If you listen to Otto Addo on the team, he said he will try a lot of legs to know who will go or not, but I believe the management and everybody who is involved in hiring the coach will consider a lot of factors,” “I pay him, but it is not my decision alone. The GFA has a role to play, and it is not about this or not and going forward, we will have all these conversations,” Mr Adams said during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

The Minister, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency, emphasised that Addo remains the head coach and deserves full support from all Ghanaians.

Ivory Coast sacked their coach during AFCON, and their assistant coach, Emerse Faé, led them to win the AFCON. If you are determined, you will bring success. At this moment, he is our coach, and we have to support him.”

Meanwhile, Otto Addo has reacted to questions surrounding his future with the team.

Ahead of Ghana’s final game for the 2026 World Cup clash with Comoros, in an interview with the Ghana FA website, the former Dortmund talent coach intimated that his focus is to make Ghanaians happy and not to worry about keeping his job, a situation he has no control over.

“What happens after is not in my hands. I hope that a lot of people, if we win, can go to America. We have to win this game. This is what we are looking at. If Ghanaians are happy, then we are happy,” he said.

Ghana will discover their group-stage opponents for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on December 5. FIFA President Gianni Infantino congratulated Ghana for securing its ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana sealed their place at the 2026 World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Comoros in their final Group I qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12, marking the country’s fifth appearance at football’s biggest tournament.

In a congratulatory message shared via video on the football governing body’s Instagram, Infantino praised the four-time African champions for their achievement and expressed excitement about their return to the world stage.

“Congratulations to the Black Stars on reaching the FIFA World Cup for the fifth time in history. Your fans will bring colours, style and passion to the greatest FIFA World Cup ever in 20226 in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

“We expect that your team will establish more global stars to follow in the footsteps of the famous team that made the quarterfinals of the tournament in South Africa in 2010, but for now, enjoy this special moment, and we cannot wait to see who the Black Stars will face when we have the final tournament draw on the 5th of December.

“See you very soon and well. Congratulations!”

Ghana’s qualification marks their fifth appearance at the World Cup, following previous campaigns in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022. Among African nations, only Cameroon (8), Morocco (7), Tunisia (7), and Nigeria (6) have made more appearances on the world stage.

The Black Stars accrued 25 points after their final World Cup qualifier. Initially sitting in third place after two rounds of matches, Ghana began their campaign against Madagascar on November 17, 2023, securing a 1–0 home victory on Matchday 1, before suffering a 1–0 away loss to Comoros on Matchday 2, November 21, 2023. The team bounced back strongly on March 21, delivering a convincing 4–0 win over Chad.

This set the tone for another win against Madagascar on March 24. Ghana defeated Madagascar 3–0 in Morocco, with a brace from Thomas Partey and Mohammed Kudus bringing the team’s points to 15. They remained atop the group until their last game on October 12.

Also, President John Dramani Mahama hopes the Black Stars will aim higher, beyond their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He has urged the team to emulate Morocco and, in broader terms, envision doing more.

President Mahama cited Morocco as a model because they made history at the 2022 FIFA World Cup by becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.

The Ghana Police Service says it has commenced an investigation into an incident that occurred at the premises of Metro TV in Accra this morning, Wednesday, 27th November.

Preliminary Police investigations indicate that upon a request from the court, police officers accompanied a court bailiff in the company of the judgment creditor, Vodacom Business (Ghana) Limited, to execute a court order against Metro TV.

Host of the Good Morning Ghana show on Metro TV, Randy Abbey, in a viral video, has recounted the manner in which some policemen ambushed him and sought to seize his vehicle at the car park of the media house yesterday.

GFA to renew betPawa’s sponsorship deal for GPL – Randy Abbey reveals

Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Dr. Randy Abbey, has announced that efforts are underway to renew the sponsorship agreement with betPawa for the Ghana Premier League.

He further indicated that the GFA has successfully engaged in renegotiations with betPawa, and a new sponsorship deal is expected to be finalized and announced shortly.

“Well, it’s a partnership that was signed for one year; there was the expression to renew from both parties, and we have gone far,” he told Joy Sports.

“I can say that we have almost concluded negotiations, and I’m sure that in the next few days, both parties will announce the details, so we are renewing for another year,” he added.

Randy Abbey schools Dep. Sanitation Minister who accused Mahama of buying state lands

Deputy Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Amidu Issahaku Chinnia, faced a stern rebuke during the Good Morning Ghana programme on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, when he made claims about former President John Dramani Mahama acquiring state properties, including lands, during his tenure.

Chinnia, who also serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sissala East, alleged that Mahama and his appointees had purchased state assets while in office.

“The state assets John Dramani Mahama sold are more than this government. Even the bungalow he lived in as Vice President, when he was leaving, he wrote for that bungalow to be given to him. He bought state lands,” Chinnia asserted.

This claim prompted the programme’s host, Dr. Randy Abbey, to challenge Chinnia for evidence. “Who bought state lands?” Dr. Abbey inquired.

Chinnia responded, “Officials of the NDC. They bought a lot of it, including former President Mahama.”

When Dr. Abbey pressed further for proof, Chinnia mentioned, “Did President Mahama not write a letter for the state to hand over his official residence to him?”

Dr. Abbey accused the deputy minister of misleading the public, clarifying that Mahama had requested the residence as his official accommodation, a right entitled to him, and not for purchase.

“Please hold on. Please hold on. Please hold on. On the issue of that official residence, we all know the facts. Why are we twisting it? Please, let us respect our audience. You can’t sit on this programme and make a statement to the effect that the former President bought state lands and not prove it. Which land, which state land did he buy? Just tell us,” Dr. Abbey demanded.

Chinnia, unable to provide concrete evidence, maintained his stance, stating, “I would get it (the evidence) to you. He bought state lands. He offered to buy his official residence.”

Dr. Abbey reiterated, “He (Mahama) never, ever bought state lands. He never wrote to buy his state bungalow. It didn’t happen.”

After a prolonged exchange, Chinnia conceded that he did not have immediate proof that Mahama bought state lands but insisted that the former president had expressed interest in purchasing his official residence.

Video: Randy Abbey confronts Sam George over allegation against senior EC official

On the May 16, 2024, edition of Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, host Randy Abbey questioned National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmaker Sam George regarding an allegation he made during the program.

The Ningo Prampram Member of Parliament accused the Electoral Commission of deliberately attempting to reduce the number of registrants in his constituency during the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

Sam George specifically accused Samuel Tetteh, the EC’s deputy commissioner in charge of operations, of reducing the number of registration kits in Ningo Prampram from three to two.

According to Sam George, an EC official in his area confirmed that the reduction was ordered from higher up and suggested that the MP contact Samuel Tetteh for further information.

Randy Abbey then pressed Sam George with a series of questions about what steps he had taken to verify the accuracy of the report he received.

Randy: Did you call Samuel Tetteh?

Sam George: Why should I call him?

Randy: But that is not fair.

Sam George: Did Samuel Tetteh call me and call the NPP candidate before sitting in Accra and deciding that we didn’t deserve three machines in Ningo Prampram?

Randy: What if the District Director was lying to you?

Sam George: What purpose does it serve?

As the issue lingered, Randy requested that his team contact the EC official for clarification on the allegation.

Biased opinion exposed – NPP member takes on Randy Abbey for comments on Ghana’s debt

An outspoken member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Patrick Kwarteng Sarpong, commonly known as P.K. Sarpong, has criticized Dr. Randy Abbey, the host of Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, for his response to the Danquah Institute’s debt analysis.

Sarpong described Abbey’s outbursts as stemming from ignorance and an empty display of sentiments. Abbey had reacted to the policy think tank’s analysis of Ghana’s debt accumulated between 2009 and 2023.

Randy Abbey said, “Danquah Institute, NPP has managed Ghana’s debts better. You guys just can’t help getting people upset and angry every day. And I read the analysis. I couldn’t just believe the level of intellectual dishonesty in this analysis that has been made. Even in the face of DDEP (Domestic Debt Exchange Programme), you have the nerves to speak like this.”

In a letter addressed to Randy Abbey, P.K. Sarpong clarified that the Danquah Institute’s analysis, presented during its engagement with the media, focused on Ghana’s debts accumulated between 2009 and 2023, highlighting which political party effectively utilized the loans contracted.

Sarpong emphasized that the Danquah Institute based its analysis on data obtained from credible sources such as the Bank of Ghana, the Ministry of Finance, and international bodies like the World Bank and the IMF.

He reiterated that the Danquah Institute, like other think tanks, comprises well-educated individuals and has the right to freedom of speech, choosing to express its views on matters of national significance.

“Lack of respect and appreciation of data from you, Randy Abbey, a supposed colleague is quite perplexing. You should question with data and not sentiments laced with attacks with the view to gagging the institute,” portions of the letter read.

P.K. Sarpong told Abbey in the letter that “retorts like those from you just expose the biased opinion you now profess. You simply betrayed your ignorance for someone who professes to hold a Ph.D.”

He stated that, contrary to Abbey’s ignorance and that of his colleagues in the NDC, the Danquah Institute’s analysis was based on facts and data. Sarpong highlighted that if intellectual dishonesty were a person, then Randy Abbey would epitomize it.

“Ghana’s economy, just like many others across the globe, was plunged into an economic depression due mainly to COVID-19 and the raging war in Ukraine, between 2020 and 2022. The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic precipitated the shutdown of economies, disrupted revenue streams, and exacerbated public debt burdens via high shipping costs, an increase in crude oil prices, amongst others,” he stated in the letter.

To demonstrate the impact of high shipping costs during the pandemic, he analyzed the Freightos Baltic Index (FBI) Global Container Freight Index, which measures shipping costs on major routes worldwide.

Comparing data from February 2020 to September 2021, he highlighted a significant surge in the index, increasing by eightfold. In February 2020, shipping costs per container were approximately $1300.

However, by September 2021, this figure had skyrocketed to a peak of around $11,000.

“Increases in shipping cost had widespread implications on consumer prices, primarily by impacting import prices directly. This is because the local prices of imported goods tend to rise proportionately with the increasing shipping costs. Inflation skyrocketed as a result of these factors,” he stated.

“In this respect, since the reserves we had as a country were not able to meet the demand, it automatically made the Dollar quite expensive to acquire, driving it upwards as the local currency tumbled. This is basic and a whole Ph.D. holder fails to grasp? Strange!,” he indicated.

He explained that the Danquah Institute’s use of the US Dollar in its analysis, instead of the Ghana Cedi, was deliberate. This choice was based on the US dollar’s status as the world’s primary reserve currency and its widespread use in international trade. He further noted that the US dollar is recognized for its stability, maintaining its unit of account and purchasing power consistently over extended periods.

“Another important takeaway from Danquah Institute’s analysis is that foreign currency debt carries an exchange rate risk. This implies that the debt stock in local currency terms could even rise with no new borrowings,” he mentioned.

He pointed out that, for instance, the public debt of $29.2 billion in 2016 would now be equivalent to about GHc380 billion without any additional borrowing.

Therefore, he argued that suggesting the current government had borrowed more than any other administration and had increased the debt from around GHS140 billion to about GHC610 billion is disingenuous.

He reiterated that Akufo-Addo had borrowed almost the same amount of money as Mahama but had achieved more with his borrowing than his predecessor.

He said, “The reasons for the rise in the debt levels have been explained vividly. Update yourself on these facts and stop your emotional outbursts and attacks on Danquah Institute. DI spoke with facts. Bring your facts and let us compare them. The truth is that there are no other facts to these issues apart from what DI employed in its analysis”.

He also outlined information on the strength of the Cedi as against the US Dollar and the percentage increases between the two main political parties.

    “This data is from the Bank of Ghana. Interbank Exchange: BoG, 2008 – 1.2, 2016 – 4.2, 2017 – 4.4, 2018 – 4.8, 2019 – 5.5, 2020 – 5.7, 2021 – 6, 2022 – 8.5, 2023 – 11.8, 2024 – 12.74 (March),” he pointed out.

“Your NDC took the Ghanaian Cedi from 1.2 to the dollar. At the time Mahama was leaving office, it was 4.2. In nominal terms, this translates into about a 250% increase.

“Akufo-Addo took it from 4.2 to 12.7, translating to about 202%. This simply means that in the management of the local currency as against the US Dollar, the NPP administration has done far better than the NDC despite the unprecedented challenges the economy has faced as a result of extraneous factors (COVID-19 and Russia/Ukraine conflict),” he added in the letter.

K.P Sarpong further emphasized that the NDC never faced a quarter of the challenges the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration had encountered, yet the currency had been managed better by this administration than Mahama did.

“If honesty was a trait you hold dear, you’d come to appreciate and admit to the fact that the data supplied by Danquah Institute cannot be controverted. Your people failed Ghana even when the global economic conditions were favourable,” he stressed.

On her part, the Executive Director of the Danquah Institute (DI), Dr. Antoinette Tsiboe-Darko, criticized Randy Abbey’s critique, describing it as emotionally driven and lacking a clear understanding of the facts and figures presented by the Institute.

She emphasized that the DI’s analysis was based solely on an examination of the country’s debt situation. Dr. Tsiboe-Darko urged Abbey to conduct thorough research before making judgments.

She reiterated that the Danquah Institute remains steadfast in its conviction that a thorough examination and discussion of facts, supported by rigorous research and data, are essential in providing the citizens of Ghana with enhanced clarity, information, and context regarding pertinent national issues.

Dr. Tsiboe-Darko added that through DI’s commitment to evidence-based discourse, it aims to foster a more informed and enlightened public discourse that promotes transparency, accountability, and progress in Ghana’s socio-political landscape.

  • You bear the cost of your choice; it shouldn’t be the state’s bill – Randy Abbey on Scholarship Secretariat saga

Host of Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show, Dr. Randy Abbey, has raised doubts about the government covering the expenses of individuals opting for post-graduate studies, especially abroad.

In a recent segment of his show discussing the allocation of state scholarships to individuals affiliated with the ruling New Patriotic Party, Dr. Abbey argued that the state should not bear financial burdens simply because someone chooses to pursue higher education.

Drawing from his own experience, Dr. Abbey emphasized that individuals making such decisions should be responsible for funding their education, as they are the primary beneficiaries of their chosen courses.

“My point is that if you want to do an MBA or MA in a foreign institution, that’s your choice. Why must the state pay for it? Why must the state pay for your choices? I made choices for post-graduate certifications, but I didn’t burden anybody with it. It is my choice. I could have used my connections, but I didn’t because it’s my choice,” he said.

Also addressing the topic on the program was Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Member of Parliament for South Dayi. He announced that the Minority caucus intends to call for an investigation into the scholarship allocation process upon the resumption of parliamentary sessions.

“The Minority has raised the bar now, and they are asking for the interdiction of the registrar and an inquiry into the matter. What the Minority is saying is that there is a need for a major inquiry into the matter because of the plethora of allegations.

“Details so far pander to the claim that the awards were largely made based on cronyism, favouritism, conflict of interest and all those things. So, if it is worthy to be looked into, then he must step aside. In the course of the inquiry, we will come and speak to [the] grounds on which he approved these applications,” he said.

Recent news coverage has spotlighted the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat amid allegations from the Fourth Estate. These reports indicate a perceived bias in awarding scholarships to individuals with close ties to the ruling party or its affiliates.

Several individuals highlighted in these reports are either relatives of prominent figures within the ruling party or affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

  • You’re heartless – Randy Abbey to Akufo-Addo over ‘haircuts’ remark

Renowned political analyst, Dr. Randy Abbey, has criticized the government for its debt exchange program and alleged ‘haircuts’ on certain bonds.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on Thursday, February 29, 2024, Dr. Abbey accused the government of being unjust and dishonest to investors who purchased bonds backed by the Energy Sector Levy Act (ESLA) and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

He emphasized that these bonds were meant to be secure, guaranteed by the tax revenues from ESLA and GETFund levies, which remained untouched.

Dr. Abbey argued that the government was breaking its promise to pay the full value of the bonds, imposing ‘haircuts’ or reductions on principal and interest payments.

In questioning the government’s actions, Dr. Abbey highlighted the breach of trust and disrespect towards investors and the public.

He expressed concern that the government appeared indifferent to the feelings and reactions of the people, stating, “You come to me and you tell me ‘look, I have a levy called ESLA. It brings in X amount of money every time. And so I want to use this to raise funds. I am selling ESLA bonds. Come and buy. Or there is a tax handle called the GETFUND levy, this is how much it rakes every month. I am creating a bond for you to come and buy. This is a tax handle, statutory funds are going in. Your money is safe and based on that, I invest.

“These tax handles have not been withdrawn. They have not been reduced. They have not been scrapped. And then you tell me that you won’t pay me what I’m entitled to. And then, after all that, you tell me you will reduce it?”

“It’s like you’ve checked out. You don’t even care how people will feel. Because when you feel how they will feel, you will not act like that.”

Dr. Abbey urged the government to honor its obligations and cease playing games with the economy.

    Background:

In 2022, Ghana confronted a severe debt crisis jeopardizing fiscal sustainability and international market access. The government initiated a domestic debt exchange program, inviting holders of eligible bonds, including ESLA bonds, to voluntarily exchange them for new bonds with extended maturities and lower coupon rates.

The intention was to reduce the present value of public debt and alleviate pressure on debt servicing. The government assured bondholders of no principal haircuts, only interest payment reductions.

Despite assurances, some bondholders, particularly foreign investors, hesitated to participate, fearing potential devaluation and currency risks.

The debt exchange program was a prerequisite for Ghana to receive a $3 billion IMF bailout, contingent on implementing fiscal consolidation measures and structural reforms.

While the IMF anticipated the debt exchange would restore Ghana’s debt sustainability and market confidence, critics, including analysts and civil society groups, viewed it as a form of default that could harm Ghana’s reputation and credit rating. Calls for transparency and accountability in public debt management ensued.

The moment Randy Abbey pulled the breaks on Sammy Gyamfi

NDC National Communicator, Sammy Gyamfi, sparked a heated debate when he questioned Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s remarks regarding the construction of stadia across the country.

Mr Gyamfi expressed skepticism over the timing of these projects, particularly as they approached the end of the government’s tenure.

However, during a live interview on Metro TV’s morning show, “Good Morning Ghana,” Randy Abbey, a respected figure and Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association, intervened.

Randy Abbey clarified that several stadia were indeed under construction, albeit under the guise of Youth Resource Centers. These facilities, he explained, included FIFA standard stadiums with seating capacities of up to 5,000.

“They are doing it. They call them Youth Resource Centres. Those facilities include a FIFA standard stadium. They are 5000-seater stadiums and it’s being done through the Ministry of Youth and Sports,” he said.

Gyamfi, acknowledging Abbey’s input, conceded that Abbey’s expertise on the matter lent credibility to his statements.

However, he remained cautious, stating his intention to verify the information independently.

Over the years, the National National Authority suffered from considerable infrastructural deficit at all levels of our operational jurisdiction i.e. Districts, Regional, Youth Leadership Institutes and the National Secretariat.

Since 2017, the government has provided funds for massive infrastructural projects.

    These include:

1.Construction of ten (10) Youth Resource Centers of Excellence

    2.Construction of two (2) Astro-Turfs

3.Facelift and Furnishing of National, Regional and District Offices

4.Construction of four(4) 300 bed capacity dormitories in four Youth Leadership& Skills Training Institutes

5.Construction of two(2)1000 sitting capacity multi- purpose halls in two Youth Leadership& Skills Training Institutes i.e Sandema in Upper East and Nalerigu in North East Region

The event, attended by several media personalities and politicians, featured the presence of Bridget Otoo, a Metro TV presenter, accompanied by her husband.

Additionally, National Democratic Congress (NDC) communicator, lawyer Beatrice Annan, was spotted at the celebration, as revealed in photos shared on Mrs. Osei’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

“Happy 50th birthday, @abbeyrandy. May your latter years be better than your former. Thank you for a beautiful day filled with very lovely people,” the former EC boss captioned her post.

The birthday celebration featured a church program at Action Chapel International, attended by Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and other notable associates.

Act of kindness or appreciation? Abedi Pele gifted Randy Abbey a wristwatch at 2006 World Cup

Former Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association, Dr. Randy Abbey, shared a remarkable story about the legendary Abedi Pele presenting him with a wristwatch during the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

This act of kindness left an indelible mark on Dr. Randy Abbey, and he emphasised that he will always remember it.

Dr. Randy Abbey recounted that Abedi Pele’s gesture was prompted by his response to a journalist’s inquiry regarding the then-controversial matter of John Paintsil raising an Israeli flag during the tournament.

Following Ghana’s 2-0 victory over the United States of America, Paintsil inadvertently found himself in international hot water after celebrating with the flag. His action was interpreted as a potential political statement in support of Israel in its ongoing conflict with Palestine.

Dr. Randy Abbey, however, succeeded in defusing the situation during the post-match press conference by explaining that Paintsil’s actions were unintentional and that he was unaware of the potential repercussions.

Abedi Pele was so impressed and delighted by Dr. Randy Abbey’s response that he gifted him the wristwatch as a token of appreciation. This incident left a lasting impression on Dr. Randy Abbey.

“He (Abedi Pele) did something for me at the 2006 World Cup and I will never forget it. The John Paintsil incident, where he took out the Israeli flag, became a big issue. At the presser, one international journalist raised it and I was the spokesperson for the Ghana Football Association.

“My response was that this is a player who doesn’t understand international geopolitics and does not understand the implications of what he was doing. He plays in Israel and since Israel was not at the World Cup, he thought that his fans and people in Israel ought to be acknowledged. That killed the issue.

“He (Abedi) came to the team hotel later in the day with Anthony Yeboah and he met me. In the course of the conversation, the issue of the presser came up. Abedi Pele took out his wristwatch and gave it to me as a gift,” he said.

    About the John Paintsil incident

Former Ghanaian defender John Paintsil found himself embroiled in an unexpected controversy during the 2006 FIFA World Cup when he hoisted an Israeli flag after a match against the United States of America.

This incident, which occurred on June 17, 2006, stemmed from an emotional moment following Ghana’s surprising 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic.

At the time, Paintsil was playing for the Israeli club Hapoel Tel Aviv. After the match, he sprinted onto the pitch with the Israeli flag and enthusiastically waved it to the crowd.

Although Paintsil’s actions upset some Arabs, who interpreted it as a provocation, his impromptu gesture was not intended to be political but rather a symbol of unity and gratitude.

Subsequently, Paintsil offered an apology for raising the Israeli flag, clarifying that he had no intention of causing offence. He explained that his actions were a display of appreciation for the support he had received from his club, Hapoel Tel Aviv, and its fans.

The misunderstanding was eventually resolved, and FIFA did not take any disciplinary action against John Paintsil.

‘Terrible and an eyesore’ – Randy Abbey rails about state of Aliu Mahama Stadium frontage

Ghanaian sports administrator Dr. Randy Abbey has voiced his disappointment regarding the condition of the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale.

The stadium, which underwent renovations in 2017 and was subsequently renamed in honour of the late former Vice President of Ghana, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, has now deteriorated significantly.

Randy Abbey, who was in Tamale for the Ghana Football Association’s elections, expressed his dismay at the stadium’s frontage, which he characterised as “extremely dirty.”

“I saw something and it really was an eyesore,” Randy Abbey said on his Good Morning Ghana show.

“Driving on the Aliu Mahama Stadium Road, I saw the frontage; it looks so extremely dirty. For an edifice like that cited on the main road, just use white paint to make the thing look good, even if the interiors are bad.

“Driving past the place it should occur to somebody that at least the frontage of the stadium should look good. What I saw was terrible,” Randy Abbey who won his re-election as a GFA ExCo member said.

Constructed in 2007, the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium is one of the venues that accommodated the 2008 AFCON and serves as the home ground for Ghana Premier League clubs Tamale City and Real Tamale United.

During the GFA elections conducted on October 5, 2023, Dr. Randy Abbey successfully secured his position on the Executive Council, amassing 12 votes, which was the highest count among the Premier League candidates.

Why tax sanitary pads as a luxury item – Randy Abbey quizes

The host of Good Morning Ghana, Randy Abbey, has expressed bewilderment over the government’s classification of sanitary pads as luxurious items.

Despite pleas from Civil Society Organizations to remove the importation tax on sanitary products, in order to make them affordable for all women and girls, the government has not taken any action in this regard.

During the 2023 mid-year budget review statement delivered by the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, in parliament on Monday, July 31, 2023, Randy Abbey expressed disappointment that the government did not address this essential need for women and girls.

He questioned whether the government has overlooked the concept of period poverty and its significant impact on women and girls.

Despite the urgent calls for affordability and accessibility of sanitary products, the matter seems to have been overlooked in the budget review.

“Do you in classifying some particular items as luxury and slapping the luxury tax on them, add sanitary pads. I am sure there were women at the table …you’ve not read about period poverty and its implications?,” Randy Abbey asked government.

It would be recalled that the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on June 23, 2023, expressed strong abhorrence at the imposition of taxes on sanitary pads in the country.

He described the passage of laws by parliament to impose the tax on sanitary pads as “unconscionable and a cardinal sin.”

Currently, Chapter 96 of the Harmonized System lists sanitary items, which are subject to a 32.5 percent tax on imported sanitary pads, which is made up of a 20 percent import fee and a 12.5 percent VAT.

Randy Abbey denies accusations of GFA conspiring against Chris Hughton

Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council, Dr. Randy Abbey, has dismissed claims suggesting that the GFA has any intention of dismissing Black Stars coach Chris Hughton.

The response came after Randy Abbey made public remarks about Hughton’s need to improve, as the team has managed only one win in three games since his appointment.

George Amoako, another GFA member, expressed his dissatisfaction with Hughton’s performance, stating that the team has not been impressive.

Meanwhile, team manager Ameenu Shardow acknowledged Hughton’s current role but mentioned that Ghana might have fared better under Otto Addo’s leadership.

However, Dr. Randy Abbey refuted any interpretation that the GFA is seeking Hughton’s removal, affirming that such claims are baseless.

He clarified that the GFA Executive Council has not discussed Hughton’s position as an agenda item.

“There is an unwarranted impression that there is a gang up against Chris Hughton,” he told Accra-based Original FM.

“I have only watched one of Chris Hughton’s games, but from what I gather from commentary, everyone, including himself, agrees we need to improve.”

“The Ghana Football Association Executive Council has not discussed Chris Hughton as an agenda,” Abbey added, refuting claims that the GFA has been planning to replace Hughton.

Chris Hughton took up the coaching role in February and has managed only one win and two goals scored in three games. Ghana’s match against the Central African Republic will determine the teams qualification for the AFCON in Ivory Coast next year.

Randy Abbey defends GFA against blame for Kotoko and Hearts of Oak’s struggles

Member of the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Executive Committee, Dr. Randy Abbey, has reacted to those who accuse the GFA of being responsible for the collapse of once-dominant local football teams Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak.

Both clubs have had severe declines in their domestic achievements in recent years as a result of their struggles in Africa’s main interclub competitions. Last season, neither team won a title.

Abbey vehemently rejected the idea that the GFA was to blame for the two legendary teams’ sad status. He emphasised that the GFA has no influence over Kotoko’s and Hearts’ daily activities, including the selection of their boards of directors or CEOs.

Responding to questions from sports journalists, Abbey defended the GFA’s position, saying, “Sometimes people ask questions, and we must help them understand. Does the GFA run Kotoko and Hearts? Is the GFA responsible for appointing the Board of directors for the clubs or CEOs for the clubs?

“Is the GFA responsible for the Circles and the Chapters? So what are we talking about? If the clubs are not doing well, what has that got to do with the GFA? I’m asking you, you live here.”

Fans and analysts are concerned about the struggles of these two successful clubs, believing that they are contributing to the country’s overall decline in football.

Randy Abbey screams ‘Awurade Yesu’ in reaction to MP sutured in ‘toilet’ news

Host of Good Morning Ghana, Randy Abbey, was forced to invoke the name of Jesus Christ in reaction to how a Member of Parliament (MP) for Nanton was sutured in Parliament’s toilet room.

The Nanton MP, Mohammed Hardi Tufeiru was involved in an accident while rushing to Parliament but he opted to go to the House first before seeking medical attention.

The Majority Chief Whip and MP for Tolon, who was the first to see him in his bloodied state when he arrived in Parliament narrated how he got him first aid before an ambulance took him to the hospital.

“He was rushing and I was waiting so when he came, I had to just rush him into the washroom and I had to call the doctors and the nurses to come and attend to him.

“Because our colleagues were opposed to that revenue bill, and we need it is part of our budget and we need it for our IMF so I had to do something,” Habib stated.

He said at the washroom, he went to the clinic to fetch doctors, some of who were colleague MPs. “Adomako Kissi, Ayew Afriyie they came and the nurses and we had to do the stitches in the washroom.”

Randy responded: “Wow, you stitched the MP I the bathroom of Parliament?”

That is what happened, then I brought an ambulance, informed the Speaker and then he now has to say that we can now take him but we had to call the Minority Whip to come into the ambulance to identify that he was actually the one. So that they will know that he is there, before we can be able to move.

    “Awurade Yesu!” Randy added.

You are out of date – Kwesi Pratt teaches Randy Abbey on new US military model

The United States has started using a new model for its military outposts abroad, according to Kwesi Pratt Jr., managing editor of the Insight newspaper.

Pratt claims that the military base’s new structure differs from the previous one, which saw the US build massive complexes in allies.

The host of Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Dr. Randy Abbey, questioned Pratt’s assertion that the US has created a military base in Ghana, forcing him to explain the nature of US military facilities.

Kwesi Pratt elucidated that the lily-pad style of bases has become the preference for the US as it is more efficient and cost-effective.

Below is the conversation on GMG

You remember Nkrumah’s statement that Africa should be a land without bombs but we’ve messed it up completely. Now we have a US military base on your soil, where is your Non-Alliance?

Randy Abbey: Kwesi, do we really have a military base in Ghana?

Pratt: You don’t know, you didn’t read the agreement in Parliament

Randy: You mean that chochopua (insignificant) thing?

Pratt: It is not chochopua at all.

Randy: When I see US military bases, I see what I see

Pratt: You are so conservative and out of date that is why you talk like that. The new concept of military bases is called the lily pad. The lily pad is not a huge infrastructure with buildings. What we have here is on model of the lily pad. The lily pads are perhaps more effective.

    What are lily pads

The lily pads according to a Huffington Post story in 2012 are “small, secretive, inaccessible facilities with limited numbers of troops, spartan amenities, and prepositioned weaponry and supplies.”

    Context

Kwesi Pratt was lamenting government seeming flirtations with the United States at a time when it is discussing with China over debt cancelation.

Pratt was concerned that the posture of government with respect to its relationship with US could scupper any chance of China cancelling its death with the country.

He cited the visit of the Vice President of the US, Kamala Harris as another evidence of Ghana’s preference for the US over China.

Randy Abbey attacks BoG Governor for allegedly printing more than GH40 billion “illegally” for government in 2022

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, has come under fire from broadcaster Dr. Randy Abbey for allegedly printing more than GHC41 billion in new currency for the government in 2022.

Speaking during his Good Morning Ghana programme on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, Randy Addy said that the BoG, which is supposed to be regulating the country’s financial sector, appears to be breaking all the rules in the sector.

“The issues of the central bank and what we keep hearing about what the central bank is doing is extremely troubling, and it must worry anybody living in this country.

“As we speak, per the IMF programme, we are told that now the government has printed GHC41.9 billion, which is about $3.3 billion. This is money the central bank has printed for the government against all the rules.

“The level of seeming recklessness and lawlessness, and irresponsibility when it comes to the operation of the central bank and the lack of transparency is getting worrying,” he said.

He said that the BoG in 2022 denied the claims of some members of the minority caucus, including the current Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, that it was illegally printing money for the government, but it turns out the claims are true.

He added that the central bank using back doors to print more money is one of the reasons why Ghana continues to see high rates of inflation.

The broadcaster called on Parliament to summon the governor of the BoG to explain why it keeps flouting the Constitution of Ghana.

Randy Abbey made these remarks while reacting to a Bloomberg report that indicated that the BoG printed GHC41.9 billion for the government in 2022. The central bank is yet to respond to the report by Bloomberg.

The Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North and a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee of Finance, Collins Adomako-Mensah, said that the House did not approve the printing of the GHC41.9 billion by the central bank.

Randy Abbey mounts spirited defence of Alpha Hour over offering saga

Anchor of Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Dr Randy Abbey, is perplexed by the online uproar caused by a picture that went viral showing the leaders of the renowned Alpha Hour praying brigade accepting an offertory during one of their events in December 2022.

Dr Randy Abbey, the host of Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV is puzzled by the furore generated on social media by a viral photo of an offertory received by the leaders of the famous Alpha Hour praying brigade during one of their events held in December 2022.

The photo which has been traversing various social media platforms has generated heated debate among some Christians and some persons who claim to be atheists.

The atheists are unhappy that the attendees of the said program willingly donated their monies to Pastor Elvis Agyemang and his team.

For them, the viral photo is another indication of the gullibility of persons who believe in the existence of God and decide to worship him.

The believers, on the other hand, shudder to understand why the ‘atheists’ will be ruffled by monies that they willingly gave to the pastor to support his ministry.

Some believers wonder why the same outrage did not greet some of the popular musical concerts which were held in December with expensive ticket pricing.

Having a bite of the issue on the Wednesday, January 18 edition of the show, Randy Abbey was mystified that the issue has actually become topical on social media.

Dr Randy Abbey, who is a member of the Action Chapel quizzed why people’s expression of their faith will offend others.

“What is wrong with this thing? Is it the offertory they collect? Don’t you go to church? Don’t you pay offertory? Don’t you pay first fruit? Don’t you pay tithe? If the offertory room of any church is filmed, will it be different from this?” Dr. Abbey asked.

“In any case some other people spend their time and money at some shows and concerts and clubs so it is a matter of choice. When you enter the places the monies of every church is counted, it won’t be different from this.” he explained.

    TWI NEWS

Meanwhile, Pastor Elvis Agyemang has explained what he normally uses the monies accrued from the offering and donation for.

In a viral video of a past sermon, Pastor Agyemang explained that he does not survive on the offertory because the funds are used for charity activities and other things.

“When you tell Christians to fast, oh pastor you are preaching, when you engage them in prayers, oh pastor you are doing well, when you urge them to give then you become a thief, there’s no money that comes before the altar that I take,” he said.

“I do not seek to amass wealth at the expense of the congregation; I rather seek to make sure you do well and progress in life,” he stressed.

  • Randy Abbey takes on NIA over Aisha Huang’s Ghana Card

The host of Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana program, Randy Abbey, has criticised the National Identification Authority (NIA) for failing to exercise due diligence when issuing a Ghana card to Aisha Huang.

According to him, when the NIA initially noticed Aisha Huang’s attempt to renew her card, it ought to have known she was up to something.

Mr Abbey asserted that the NIA should have ordered Aisha Huang’s arrest as soon as they realized she was attempting to register using new credentials.

“A few days ago we were discussing this NIA card issue and Dzifa Gunu sent us a message that his NIA card has not been sent to him because his biometrics match that of an impaired person so since June, he has not had Ghana card.

“If you read the NIA statement (on Aisha Huang) they tell us that this woman went to the office at Tamale to register with a different passport Her biometrics matched that of the one in their system already. When they questioned her, she told them she had changed her name, although the difference was not the name but the date of birth as well.

“They then gave her the option to either bring a sworn affidavit to effect that change or do the renewal on the basis of the information they have already and I’m like who does this? She opted to do the renewal on what they have already.

“This is somebody who has come not with the view to amending her record but with a new passport attempting to register anew. That is different from the people who went to El-Wak Stadium with few challenges. This is a person who comes with a new passport attempting to acquire a new card as a different person, your system detects that her biometrics matches that of somebody in there, she confirms I’m the same person and you okay bring an affidavit so that we can effect the change for you. This is someone who has clearly established an intent”.

Aisha Huang is facing trial in court following her re-arrest. Aisha Huang is facing two charges; mining without a license and sale of minerals without a license.

The court on September 14, 2022, denied Aisha Huang and 3 other accused persons bail after they pleaded not guilty.

She is expected to reappear on September 27, 2022.

SAFA file protest to CAF and FIFA over controversial penalty in Ghana defeat

GFA’s executive council member Randy Abbey has said referee Ndiaye Maguette’s penalty decision in Ghana’s win over South Africa in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers was a good call.

Maguette awarded the Black Stars a penalty after Daniel Amartey was pulled in an attempt to deny the Leicester City defender from connecting a corner.

The Senegalese official has been heavily criticised for his decision as many believe Amartey dived after a little contact. Hence it was a soft penalty call.

The South African FA are said to file a protest to CAF and FIFA regarding the incident and probably demand a replay.

For Randy Abbey, SAFA has the right to protest the decision, but the referee was spot on.

“For the South Africans, they have every right to say that they think the decision went against them and all that. I don’t think that we need to focus on that; as far as I am concerned, I believe that the decision was right and that the referee was spot on.

“The referee demonstrated throughout the game that he was very impartial, so it is within the right of South Africa to protest and complain,” he said in an audio aired on Kumasi based Angel FM.

  • Nameless football administrators brand Ghana FA Legacy Debt a façade

Some anonymous football administrators have told Graphic Sports that claims by the Ghana Football Association that it is insolvent are false and façade.

The Executive Council published a debt stock of GH¢ 11,106,550 which they inherited from the previous administration to justify why they could not disburse US$ 500,000 FIFA Forward money to the association.

But the dissenters say the branded ‘Legacy Debt’ is contrary to the financial statement presented to congress last December.

”Apart from the dark cloud of doubt hanging over the credibility of most of the so-called ‘legacy debts’ of the GFA, the audited financial statements of the GFA over the years (at least from 2006-2019) do not lend the much needed helping hand to the claims of the GFA,” the officials told Graphic Sports.

”The claim by the GFA is merely a one-sided financial monologue. Assuming without admitting that the association is swimming in a pool of debt, it’s true that the GFA failed or refused to add that upon assumption of office, it inherited a windfall of revenues, including but not limited to a whopping US$1m paid by Glo.

”These revenues were applied to the payment of non-essential expenditures such as the needless renovation of the GFA office premises, the payment of high salaries to new recruits, allowances of Executives, all without the requisite approval of a budget by congress, among others.

”A prudent disbursement of the monies received by the current administration would have left the GFA in a better financial state of health.”

In addition, they argue that a thorough review of the GFA financial statements submitted to congress in December 2019 is in contradiction to the claim by the Ex.Co.

”Current assets of the GFA, that are funds set aside to meet short-term external obligations, was projected at GHc15.8 million. The current liabilities of the GFA was estimated at GHc4.1 million, which by implication gives a net current assets of GHc11.77 million,” he said.

”This indicates a strong liquidity position of the current assets covering up an external indebtedness by 3.8 times. The claim that the post-balance sheet events of the GFA occurred immediately after June 2019 is not true as most of the indebtedness being made on the GFA were in existence as far back 2001/2002.”

  • Ghanaians applaud budgetary allocations without scrutiny Randy Abbey

Dr Randy Abbey, host of Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, has stated that Ghanaians always applaud budgetary allocations by various political administrations without tracking the disbursements of funds.

He said, when the Finance Minister reads the budget and allocate a certain amount to a particular sector, all that the Ghanaian will do is to compare the amount to the previous administration allocated to that sector and decide to offer praises or criticisms without looking at how best the amount will be disbursed.

Dr Abbey said at the end of the day it will emerge that “even in the fourth quarter five per cent of what was allocated in the budget has not even been released”.

“People do not even track and say that in 2007, you said you were going to give a certain amount to this sector, you come to tell us what you are going to do in 2008…in 2007 how much of what you said you will do for that sector did you do and why were you not able to do that,” he said on “The KSM Show” on Metro TV [Friday, May 1, 2020].

He added that all the time the appropriations excite the Ghanaian and not the implementation or tracking of the budgetary allocations.

Dr Randy Abbey indicated further that in pursuit of power, politicians know what must be done but why they do not do what they know must be done and do not do “is a million-dollar question” that needs to be answered.

He said, this can be measured when a party is in opposition… “they are very analytical, say all the right things, striking all the right chords and when they get the power, it becomes a different kind of thing”.
