    Vinícius Júnior has brushed aside rumours suggesting he could clinch the Ballon d’Or, emphasising his priority to assist Real Madrid in securing their 15th Champions League title.


    Named the player of the match in Madrid’s 2-1 Champions League semifinal second-leg triumph over Bayern Munich on Wednesday, the Brazil international said: “Everyone talks about the Ballon d’Or but I’m very calm. I want to win another Champions League with this team.


    “I can do great things this season and then I have to go with Brazil [for the Copa América]. I always think about the teams first and then me.

    “We were able to place the best team in the world in another final. We have 25 stars in the team, all of us have worked hard to achieve our aim which is to go to London [for the Champions League final] and win La Liga. We have won La Liga; we are going to London.”

    On June 1, Madrid is set to face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at London’s Wembley Stadium. Vinícius, 23, is considered one of the top candidates to inherit Lionel Messi’s Ballon d’Or title.

    He showcased his talent by netting a hat trick in Madrid’s victory over Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final last January, and his contributions with 13 goals played a pivotal role in Los Blancos’ LaLiga triumph.

    In the Champions League, his performance has been remarkable, scoring five goals and providing five assists in nine appearances.

    “I came here [to Madrid] when I was young, 18,” he said. “I was criticised a lot and that made me work a lot more in order to be ready when the time came… I train every day to improve. I’m now here, in another final.

    “I’ve never worked in a group that is as united as ours is this season. This group works a lot.”
    Vinícius also paid tribute to Spanish forward Joselu, whose two late goals put Madrid in the final.


    “[Against Bayern on Wednesday] Joselu came on in the 81st minute and scored two goals,” he said. “This is a reward for Joselu. He has always worked to do the best for the team and never complained when he didn’t play. This proves what our group is.”

    Thomas Tuchel expressed frustration at the “absolute disaster” decision that disallowed Matthijs de Ligt’s late equaliser for Bayern Munich against Real Madrid.

    Bayern, leading the heavyweight semi-final tie with three minutes remaining, suffered a sudden collapse after substituting 44-goal striker Harry Kane, allowing Blancos substitute Joselu to score twice in three minutes.

    Although Bayern believed they had secured a 113th-minute equaliser with De Ligt’s goal, it was disallowed for a debatable offside call that had halted play, and VAR could not review the decision.

    Match officials are told to delay such calls when decisions are so tight, with Noussair Mazraoui potentially level with the last man, and Bayern boss Tuchel told TNT Sports afterwards: “That was an absolute disaster. A violation of the rules. This scene must be played out until the end.

    That’s the rule. The linesman made the mistake, and the referee made the second mistake. We were almost there and a very unusual mistake by the best player for the equaliser, we conceded in a very narrow decision in stoppage time.

    Then we scored one and it was a disastrous decision from the linesman and the referee, so it feels almost like a betrayal in the end because of that decision. The linesman said sorry. That does not help at that kind of level—to raise the flag in a decision like this, in a close decision at the last minute.

    The referee as well; he does not have to whistle; he sees that we win the second ball; he sees that we get the shot away. To whistle is a very, very bad decision. It is against the rules and it is a bad decision from both of them. It is a disaster, tough to swallow, but it is the way it is.”


    Tuchel added, “Having the balls to raise the flag in a situation like that is a big mistake. And then the referee, when he saw that we had won the rebound, made the decision to whistle. It wouldn’t have happened the other way around. We accept the apology (from the linesman) but this is not the time to apologise. It’s the semi-finals and it’s not the time to make those sorts of mistakes.”

    Real Madrid has secured their spot in another Champions League final, setting up a showdown against Borussia Dortmund, who are also from Germany.

    Meanwhile, Bayern Munich will be left to ponder over a season without a major trophy for the first time since 2011–12.

    Karim Benzema has been grappling with persistent muscular injuries since joining Al Ittihad last summer.

    Despite his setbacks, he has managed to score 13 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions for the Jeddah-based club. The 2022 Ballon d’Or winner is currently under contract with Al Ittihad until June 2026.

    In other news, Real Madrid has recently extended the contract of their promising young forward, Enzo Alves, who is the son of club legend Marcelo.

    Enzo, aged 14, has been part of Madrid’s academy teams since 2017 and has shown promise by scoring 17 goals this season for the under-15 side. A Spain U15 international, Enzo has signed a one-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until June 2027.

    Barcelona president Joan Laporta has called for a potential replay of Sunday’s Clásico against Real Madrid if it is confirmed that a VAR error resulted in Lamine Yamal’s disallowed goal at the Bernabéu.

    Yamal’s shot, which occurred at 1-1 in the first half, was cleared off the line by Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. However, without goal-line technology in LaLiga, VAR determined that the ball did not fully cross the line.

    Despite Barcelona’s appeals, Madrid ultimately secured a 3-2 victory, extending their lead to 11 points over Barça in the league standings with only six matches remaining.

    “There were several debatable incidents in the match, but amongst all of them, there is one that is crucial and can change the result of the game,” Laporta said in a statement on Monday.

    “I am referring to the ‘phantom goal’ by Lamine Yamal. As a club, we want to be sure about what happened. For that reason we will make an immediate request for a comprehensive collection of footage and audio from the incident.

    “If once this documentation has been analysed, the club understands that an error was made in the revision of the incident, we will take all available measures to reverse the situation, without discounting, obviously, any necessary legal action.

    “If it is confirmed that it was a legal goal, we will move ahead and request that the game be replayed, just as has happened in another game in Europe due to a VAR error.”

    Earlier this season, a match between Anderlecht and Genk in the top tier of Belgian football was replayed in its entirety due to a VAR error, which resulted in a misapplication of the laws of the game.

    However, this incident involved encroachment before a penalty kick was taken, rather than a disputed goal.

    Similarly, in Spain, a judge ruled last year that VAR failed to provide the referee with all available images of a goal awarded to Atlético Madrid in their 3-3 draw against Espanyol.

    Despite the goal being allowed to stand, additional footage suggesting that the ball did not cross the line was not presented to the match official.

    This decision had significant consequences for Espanyol, who were ultimately relegated from the league.

    Laporta also said there were “various other incidents” during the game that Barça disagreed with and “could have been reviewed by VAR.”

    Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández and goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen expressed their dismay at the absence of goal-line technology in Spain, labelling it “embarrassing” following their team’s defeat.

    Xavi further remarked that since the beginning of the season, particularly in their away match against Getafe, he has noticed a pattern of significant decisions going against Barcelona.

    As their LaLiga title hopes dwindle, these sentiments underscore the frustration felt within the club.

    Laporta took a similar view, adding: “We are forced into [this action] after having suffered various incidents on the pitch that have damaged us and others that have benefited our rival.

    “Added together, those incidents reflect the difference in points that there is at the top of the table in La Liga.“

    Laporta’s statement has been met with “astonishment” and “surprise” by Madrid, according to a source, who adds that Los Blancos believe the Barça president is just going on the attack to appease supporters.

    Furthermore, it stresses that neither LaLiga’s statutes nor the applicable regulations for the management and administration of the audiovisual and economic rights of sports organisations were violated.

    This implies that the operation was carried out in compliance with the powers and procedures established by law and La Liga’s statutes.

    “The ruling also concludes that the transaction with CVC does not infringe on the rights of the participating LaLiga clubs, arguing that the agreements reached ‘were made in a manner that respects the rights and obligations of the clubs, without imposing unfair conditions on them or significantly altering their participation and rights within the competition.’

    “It also recognises LaLiga’s autonomy to manage and administer its commercial and audiovisual rights, as long as this is done within the existing legal framework. This includes the ability to carry out financial and commercial operations that are considered beneficial to its members collectively while always respecting the applicable laws and regulations, as is the case with Boost LaLiga.”

    The agreement with CVC was initially revealed in August 2021 and subsequently ratified by the league’s general assembly four months later. Of the total €1.994 billion, the majority was designated for investment in infrastructure, technology, and international expansion. Fifteen percent was allocated for transfers, while another fifteen percent was earmarked for debt reduction.

    Three-quarters of this amount have already been received, with the remaining portion expected to be received by the end of 2024.

    Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic argued that the deal was “an illegal transaction that causes irreparable damage to the Spanish football sector as a whole” and proposed an alternative investment package, which they said offered better value for money.

    LaLiga and Real Madrid have regularly clashed over the league’s management of its TV rights in recent years, with the club bringing frequent legal actions against the organisation.

    Díaz put Madrid ahead in the 48th minute with a stunning individual effort, running at the Leipzig defence before shooting past goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi, leading Bellingham to post “Oh my god,Brahim!” on social media.

    The Spain winger paid tribute to Bellingham, who’s expected to be out of action for three weeks with a sprained ankle sustained in Madrid’s 4-0 win over Girona on Saturday, with his goal celebration and then when speaking to the media postmatch.

    “I love [Bellingham],” Díaz told Movistar. “From the first moment, we’ve got on really well. I’m helping him with his Spanish. He’s a world-class player, and I enjoy playing with him. Apart from the charisma he has, he’s a great person.

    “Despite the absences of Jude, who we missed, and of [Antonio] Rudiger, and all those [players] who are out injured for a long time, we keep showing that we’re a great team, that we’re Real Madrid.”


    Díaz began the season struggling to break into the Madrid team after signing from AC Milan, but has become increasingly important and has now scored eight goals in all competitions.

    “I got the ball; I started running and I saw they were worried about jumping in; they were backing off and I put it in the net,” Díaz said. “I’m intuitive; I wanted to give it to Vinícius [Júnior] but in the end I took the shot. It was a nice goal.”

    “After two years in Milan, he looks stronger, with more character,” coach Carlo Ancelotti said when asked about Díaz. “He started the season without playing much, but when he’s got an opportunity, he’s always contributed. Today he scored a spectacular goal.”

    “What did I think [before the goal]?” Ancelotti added. “Don’t lose the ball! And he didn’t!”

    LaLiga leaders Madrid will face Rayo Vallecano, Sevilla, and Valencia in the league before their return leg against Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 6th.
