34 Nigerian soldiers tender resignation letters amid corruption allegations

Despite escalating security issues the military is now facing in several areas of the nation, SaharaReporters has learned that a total of 34 troops are leaving the Nigerian Army.

The soldiers, drawn from various formations of the army across the country, all belong to junior cadres who are mostly at the forefront in the field.

They include warrant officers, staff sergeants, sergeants, lance corporals, corporals and privates.

The Chief of Army Staff has since approved their formal disengagement.

The list of the exiting soldiers did not distinguish between those embarking on voluntary retirement and those leaving the army on medical grounds.

However, none of them has attained retirement age or the mandatory years of service.

The soldiers in a letter to the army chief under Reference NA/COAS/001, quoted the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service soldiers/rating/airmen (Revised) 2017.

The approval of their voluntary disengagement dated January 25, 2023, was signed by Colonel AC Unadgu and exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters during the weekend.

According to Unadgu, the 34 soldiers are to submit all military properties in their possession.

There have been allegations of corruption in the Nigerian Army which some of the soldiers have blamed on the issue – soldiers overstaying in the Northeast.

According to some soldiers, the army is the epitome of deep-seated corruption. They noted that corruption is affecting the prosecution of the anti-terrorism war in Northeast Nigeria.

Recently, army personnel deployed for counterinsurgency operations in Borno State lamented that those who were to relieve them three months after they were asked to leave the battlefield had yet to resume.

The soldiers complained that they were being forced to confront Boko Haram militants, adding that their low morale and lack of willingness to continue to fight made it possible for terrorists to dislodge some military camps recently.

They complained of abandonment and accused the military authorities of keeping them on the front beyond their approved period of stay

In 2022, over 500 soldiers in the Northeast and other theatres of operation wrote to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen General Faruk Yahaya, seeking voluntary retirement.

Recently, some personnel attached to the 198 Special Forces of the Nigerian Army in Borno accused their Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Abdulahi Hassan Ali of corruption and financial mismanagement.

Some of the soldiers who spoke to SaharaReporters claimed Ali had been diverting their allowances.

According to the soldiers, the unit will soon witness a complete breakdown of order and discipline over the unpaid allowances and alleged bad treatment by their commander.

“We calling on them to quickly treat and investigate the reason why our commander has refused to pay soldiers all their operations funds which were directed to us in 198 Special Force Battalion, under 402 SF brigade.

“The Nigerian Army gave 198 Special Force Commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Abdulahi Hassan Ali millions of Naira to give his soldiers for Operation Thunder Strike that was conducted in Kaduna State in 2021 but he refused to pay them accordingly,” one of the soldiers said.

“The Borno state governor, His Excellency Governor Zulum gave 198 and 199 Special Forces Battalion funds; worth millions of Naira to give soldiers after they returned back to Maiduguri, Borno state from Kaduna state. To motivate/moralize soldiers for Operation desert sanity which was conducted in 2022 in Borno state. But both battalions’ commanders refused to give these soldiers their entitlements.

“The resent Sallah money worth millions of Naira which was given to the 134, 198 and 199 special forces battalions under 402 SF Brigade by the same Borno state governor Zulum as welfare was also diverted. The commanders of 134 and 199 battalions shared the money to their soldiers while Ali who is leading 198 SF refused to pay us.

“In the ongoing operation forest sanity in Kaduna state, cows and motorcycles captured around Damba and Kudenden general area are being hidden in his newly built house in Kano and farm.

“This is a man who I sed (sic) to convert soldiers’ entitlements, he has been pocketing the battalion’s feeding money every months. You know we dare not challenge or ask our commanding officer about all the money and other allowances but we have family and relatives that we are taking care of at our various homes. So Nigerians should please help us out.”

In 2022, some army personnel also accused President Buhari of failing to check corruption and financial mismanagement among some top military officers while soldiers continue to cry on a daily basis.

The soldiers in an open letter to the President accused top army officers of corruption and extortion.

They said despite their numerous complaints, nobody was saying anything about their unpaid allowances by the military finance corps.

The letter had read, “We want to start by saying that it is a shame on General Muhammadu Buhari for failing to address the financial mismanagement of Nigerian soldiers while they continue to cry on the (sic) daily basis.

“Soldiers of the Nigerian Army have complained severally (sic) how their money is being short pay (sic) by the Army Finance and nobody is saying anything about it.

“Nigerian soldiers have complained severally (sic) how they have been given 20% of the 100% allowance which was signed into law by the President Buhari since (sic) 2017 which is known as MAFA. No one is saying anything and the President is not interested to follow up or investigating (sic) the matter.

“The salary of our soldiers is being paid through POS, phone transfer in connection with banks by the army finance department. Our soldiers have been crying but no one is saying anything.

“Our Soldiers continue to buy their uniforms themselves and every other kit needed to protect the people and the nation. No uniform allowance, no boot allowance, and nobody are (sic) saying anything.

“The soldiers we don’t see as anything are the ones that are keeping this country moving. They are using their lives as a wages (sic) between Nigerians and our adversaries.

“When these boys will strike, they won’t be able to enjoy all the money they are stealing and hiding for (sic) their children. When they will strike, running to another country will be too late for us. When they will strike, they (sic) won’t be room for amendment.

“Pay our soldiers their money in full and do it now. Army finance should not have anything to do with our soldiers’ salaries and allowances.”

Alan Kyerematen thanks Akufo-Addo; to address nation soon

The former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen has expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for accepting his resignation.

In a post on Facebook, Mr Kyerematen noted that he was thankful to have served under the government.

He added that he was also grateful for the support from his party members, friends and family.

“I would like to thank H.E the President for the opportunity to serve and for graciously accepting my resignation as Cabinet Minister responsible for Trade and Industry, effective 16th January 2023,” he wrote.

Mr Kyerematen added that “I sincerely appreciate the support from my family, colleagues, my party the NPP, the international community, and the general public during my tenure as a Minister.”

He noted that in the coming days, he will be addressing Ghanaians.

On Friday, it was reported that Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen had resigned from the government as the Trade and Industry Minister.

He tendered his resignation letter to President Nana Akufo-Addo on Thursday, Jan 5, 2023.

The man popularly called ‘Alan Cash’ has long been rumoured to be nursing the ambition to contest the flagbearership slot of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

His resignation is believed to buy him time to campaign to promote his presidential ambition.

President Akufo-Addo has since accepted the Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen’s resignation from office.

The President subsequently directed the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta to act as caretaker minister until a substantive appointment is made.

Alan’s resignation is a good decision – Political scientist

A political scientist with the University of Ghana has lauded the resigned Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyeremanten’s decision to step down.

praised for his actions by a political scientist at the University of Ghana.

Dr. Asah Asante, who appeared on Joy FM’s Midday News on Friday, praised Mr. Kyerematen’s decision.

This, he believes, will allow the Minister to concentrate on his political ambitions.

“It is right for the Minister because he wants to first of all have political space to operate. And also, he wants to be faithful to his government by not undermining the work of government while he has his eyes on this position and still occupying office, his attention will be divided. So if he has taken this decision to hop out so a new person comes in to continue from where he is leaving off and that is a good one,” he told Blessed Sogah.

The Trade Minister, Mr Alan Kyerematen on Thursday, January 5, 2023, tendered his resignation letter to President Akufo-Addo.

Although there have been persistent rumors that the Minister intends to run as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, it is unclear if his resignation is to meet that purpose.

The political scientist further advised other ministers to also follow suit.

According to him, if they vacate their positions to concentrate on their political ambitions, it will pave way for others to fill the vacuum.

“Straight away because you don’t waste everybody’s time by being there, one would expect that you are working but here you are, you are doing other things – campaigning underground and all that,” he said.

Meanwhile, former Communications Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah has described the resignation of Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, as ‘too late’.

Reacting to the news of the Minister’s resignation, the former NDC appointee said the move is behind time, given that Mr Kyerematen has already contributed to the deterioration of Ghana’s economy.

According to him, Alan and other members of the country’s Economic Management Team have collectively sunk the country, hence it is too late for him to exit the scene.

He, therefore, charged the Minister to rather stay at post and apologise to Ghanaians for the harm caused.

“Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen it’s tooooooooooooooo laaaaaaaaaaattttte, just toooooooo laaaaaaaaaaattttte to resign from this sinking ship.

“This NPP government is in its 7th year, and you’ve been part of the “SOLID TEAM” that has mismanaged the economy.

“Embrace the responsibilities and apologise to Ghanaians for collectively failing us: as a government and as an Economic (mis)Management Team”, portions of his Facebook post on Friday read.

  • ‘Kume Preko’ demo: Ghanaians demonstrate against high cost of living today

In the midst of economic hardships fueled by high inflation rates, some Ghanaians have dedicated today, November 5, 2022, to demonstrate in demand for better living conditions.

The organizers noted that this is to send a “strong message” to the government to act in order to relieve Ghanaians of the challenges they currently face.

They also called for the resignation of the leadership of the country.

Addressing a news conference in Accra on Friday ahead of the demonstration, Nii Ayi Opare, Spokesperson of the Economic Fighters League and a member of the Organisers of the “Kume Preko” demo, charged protestors to engage in a peaceful exercise.

“Tomorrow’s demonstration is going to be a peaceful one and I want to place on record that, the youth of Ghana are law-abiding and peace-lovers. No one has to look far from the three main demonstrations under the ‘fix the country’ banner. All three that we’ve had were peaceful and without any incidents with the police or without.

“To those few elements who are planning to use this demonstration to cause trouble, to engage in any violent activity whatsoever, this is not the space for you, indeed, you will be routed out on your own and handed over directly to the State institutions to take proper action against you,” he said.

Protestors would converge at the Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle at 0700hrs, and march through the 28th February Road to Farisco Junction and then through the Liberia Road to Independence Square.

Martin Kpebu, the Lead Organiser, also said, “It’s clear to you, I mean from the hardship we are all suffering daily, that this country is in an economic quagmire. We’re falling into a deep crater as a result of the reckless borrowing and other forms of misgovernance by President Akufo-Addo.”

“We are dying. Citizens are dying, citizens can’t afford food, citizens are starving all because of mal-governance by President Akufo-Addo,” he said.

  • There was no ‘I am sorry’ as Liz Truss resigned

Liz Truss did not apologize as she gave her final speech as prime minister.

Sky News political editor Beth Rigby noted how she, like Boris Johnson, focused on her successes and not the missteps.

Beth said: “I think there was an opportunity there for Liz Truss to do what she actually did in front of the media on Monday after Jeremy Hunt junked her entire budget and say ‘I am sorry for the mistakes I made.’

“You did not see that at the podium. There was no I am sorry.

“It was very Johnsonian in that way, but a different style. That doesn’t surprise me.

“I was thinking about this last night and really, Rishi Sunak is a return to politics as usual in terms of how a prime minister might conduct themselves.

“If you think about Boris Johnson, he was a populist, he had this popular appeal, and he liked to break the rules.

“He, to his critics, showed disregard for rules, and in the end, that was his undoing.

“Liz Truss was ideological, really in hot pursuit of what she wanted to do, quite a radical.

“Rishi Sunak is a different type of politician.

“So it doesn’t surprise me that Liz Truss was quite like Boris Johnson in talking about her wins and glossing over her losses.”

  • Theresa May pleads for compromise and unity

The former prime minister has pleaded with her party to provide an “orderly transition”, amid fears the upcoming leadership contest could become messy.

Other Conservative MPs have shared similar thoughts this afternoon – including Justin Tomlinson, who said this was the “last-chance saloon” for the party to maintain credibility.

A vicious leadership contest would further divide an already split party that is about to see its third prime minister in the space of a few months.

  • Resigned Narteh Ogum to meet Asante Kotoko Board on Monday

Coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum is yet to meet the Board of Directors of Asante Kotoko on Monday, July 25, 2022, in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi.

This meeting according to former Management Member and Supporters leaders chairman, Kweku Amponsah, has been scheduled by the Board to try and talk coach Ogum out of his resignation.

“Coach will meet the Board on Monday for another meeting to try and sort things out. I hope that something very positive will come out of that meeting.”

“Also, I can tell you that he didn’t insult anybody in that meeting so disregard those reports,” Kweku Amponsah told Accra-based Asempa FM in an interview.

Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, was reported by Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM to have resigned from his position as the head coach of Asante Kotoko during a zoom meeting with the board and management of the club.

  • Asante Kotoko in talks with coach Prosper Ogum to reverse his decision

Asante Kotoko has refused to accept the shock resignation of coach  Dr.Prosper Narteh Ogum.

Ghanasoccernet.com understands the Porcupine Warriors’ management is in talks with Ogum to reverse his decision and continue to lead the club.

Kotoko supporters, who have been shocked by the news, are hoping that management can persuade Ogum not to leave.

Ogum, who won the Ghana Premier League with Kotoko last season, tendered his resignation on Wednesday afternoon after a meeting with the technical committee of the Board and Management.

In a sensational turn of events, Ogum has quit the job, barely three weeks before the start of the club’s pre-season activities kicks in.

Oyerepa FM’s Eugene Adu Poku is reporting that the Ghana Premier League winner has left his role at the club after a meeting with the top brass of the Ghanaian giants.

Details are sketchy but sources say the gaffer is unhappy with the club’s transfer activity ahead of next season and more crucially their involvement in the CAF Champions League.

The club has lost three key players- Mudasiru Salifu, Fabio Gama and Kwame Baah have all left the record Ghanaian champions.

The tension between the coach and the management team appears to have reached the apex – leading to the decision of the University professor to part ways with the African powerhouse.

The team is expected to start preparations for the upcoming season by participating in the Ghalca off-season competition- the G6 in Kumasi next month.
