  • Five critical roads in UWR penciled for construction

Five roads in the Upper West Region have been scheduled for construction this year under the government’s Critical Roads Project.

    The projects included the 31km Wa-Bulenga-Yala road, the 56km Fian-Issa-Wahabu road, the 41km Wahabu-Funsi-Yala road, the 20km Wechiau-Ga road and the 22km Wa-Han road.

When completed, it will open up the Region for massive economic activity, thereby improving the lives of the people in the area.

Mr Amoako Atta, the Minister for Roads and Highways, disclosed this at a press conference proceeding President Nana Akufo-Addo’s visit to the Region to cut the sod for the construction of a combined 17-megawatt solar power plant at Kaleo and Lawra in the Upper West Region.

He said the President has directed the Minister of Finance to raise special funding to fund these critical projects across the country.

He disclosed that the Upper West Region had a total road network of 3,607km out of which about 540km was paved and 344km at both gravelled and earth stages.

The Roads Minister further disclosed that 61 per cent of roads under the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) were good, 38 per cent fair and one per cent poor.

Mr Amoako Atta added that less than one per cent of roads under the Department of Feeder Roads were good, 37 per cent fair and 21 per cent poor.

Under the Department of Urban Roads, 30 per cent of its roads were considered to be good, seven per cent fair and 63 per cent poor.

Mr Amoako Atta, therefore, noted that the government’s concentration in the Region was on the Departments of Feeder and Urban Roads.

He noted therefore that the Ministry would concentrate on routine maintenance of the roads all-year-round to make the roads serviceable in all three categories.

This, they would do by ensuring that all potholes on paved roads were patched before June 2020.

He said on his way to the Region through the Damongo-Sawla-Wa road, he was amazed at the number of potholes, adding, he had since directed the Chief Executive to dispatch the Mobile Maintenance Unit to patch the potholes and they had since arrived and work had commenced.

He further directed that the team should stay until all the potholes on that stretch were patched, after which a contractor would be put on the road to do refilling so that they save the road.

Mr Amoako Atta also assured that all gravelled roads totalling about 5,200km in the Region would be graded before the onset of the rains in June 2020.

“All roadside vegetation shall be cleared and culverts and drains are desilted to improve safety and smooth flow of water during rainfall”.

  • Bonaboto Chiefs to storm Jubilee House over bad roads and airport

Chiefs from the Upper East region are set to visit the seat of government over the state of roads in the region and other developmental challenges including the outstanding issue of an airport for the region.

The decision to meet the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo follows agitations by residents in several parts of the region over deplorable road networks in the regional capital Bolgatanga and several other urban and feeder roads.

The siting and construction of an airport for the Upper East region which has generated some apprehension among communities and residents of the region is said to be top on the agenda of the meeting with the President.

Information available to MyNewsGh.com further suggests some Paramount and Sub-Chiefs from Tongo, Bongo, Nangode, Sakoti and Bolgatanga make up the team of traditional authorities and rulers to be led by the Paramount Chief of the Talensi Traditional Area Tongraan Naab Kugbilson Nalebegtang who doubles as a Member of the Council of State to storm the jubilee house.

Recently the state of roads in Upper East Regional capital was described as nothing to write home about as Naab Kugbilson Nalebegtang could not fathom why a Regional capital should have its roads in their current terrible state.

Speaking at the Regional Townhall meeting in Bolgatanga organised by the Ministry of Information and covered by MyNewsGh.com, the former Member of Parliament (MP) now traditional ruler called for special attention on the roads situation in the Upper East region.

“Everything that we are doing now, if you count us among other regions in terms of roads, in terms of infrastructure, we are almost always at the last end. It is on this grounds that I will like to appeal that in spite of what we have seen in terms of road infrastructure that is going on, we still need an accelerated approach on our road construction works,” he said.

Touching particularly on the state of roads in Bolgatanga township, the obviously unhappy Paramount Chief noted that the situation defeats the status of Bolgatanga as a Regional capital of the Upper East region.

“One area I will like to say without mincing words is the Bolgatanga township road which is our regional capital. The Regional capital roads are nothing to write home about and I think for us to also boast as a region, there should be an accelerated approach to the road network within the Bolgatanga township so that we can also knock our chest and say that when you come to Bolgatanga as the Upper East Regional capital the road network is so good,” he added.

Mr. Samara informed that the objective of the project was to create a new roundabout and four new slip roads within each quadrant of the roundabout to reduce the number of vehicles approaching the roundabout, and the upgraded access and egress lanes to the north, east and westerly approaches. “The project has also created a new access at-grade railway cross to the New Port,” he said.
