In July, two individuals; Atame Elijah and Nasiru Yakubu were arrested in connection with a gold robbery incident at the Bomfa Adumasa market in the Ashanti South Region.

The suspects were picked up from their hideouts after a collaborative effort between community members and the police.

The police retrieved a bag containing some gold and money from at the hideout. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspect.

Six individuals sustained injuries following the robbery incident which occurred on Monday, October 20. The armed robbers stormed the community and attacked some gold buyers, firing several gunshots in the process.

In the meantime, two of the culprits have been detained by the Konongo Divisional Police Command for further investigation.
In a separate incident, the police in August announced the retrieval of items used by a gang of armed men during a gold shop robbery at Mpohor in the Western Region.

Weapons, ammunition, clothing, and other materials were among the exhibits. According to a Facebook post on Tuesday, August 19, the police stated that the retrieved items would aid in the ongoing investigation into the case.

On Sunday, August 17, one person was arrested in connection with the robbery. The police explained that the retrieval was made possible after officers from the Kuntanase District in the Ashanti Region intercepted a suspicious white Toyota Sienta near the Aputuoagya–Bekwai road.

Currently, the police are on a manhunt for eight others allegedly involved in the heist. They added that two men who were standing by the vehicle fled upon seeing the approaching patrol team.

According to the police, a search of the vehicle led to the recovery of an AK-47 assault rifle, a locally manufactured firearm, two AK-47 magazines loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition each, and other materials believed to have been used during the robbery.

“The Ghana Police Service, in its ongoing investigation into the Mpohor gold shop robbery case, has recovered weapons, ammunition, clothing items and some other exhibits linked to the case. As part of intensified anti-robbery patrols, officers from the Kuntanase District in the Ashanti Region intercepted a suspicious white Toyota Sienta near the Aputuoagya–Bekwai road.

“Two men who were standing by the vehicle fled into the bush upon seeing the approaching police patrol team. A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered an AK-47 assault rifle, a locally manufactured firearm, two AK-47 magazines loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition each, additional packets of ammunition, cowrie shells, a Huawei smartphone, identity documents, and some clothing items.

“A careful examination of the recovered exhibits against the CCTV footages of the Mpohor robbery revealed a striking resemblance between the clothing items (hooded tops) and the wellington boots that were used during the robbery. The recovery of these items marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation and manhunt for the suspects,” parts of the statement read.

The Ghana Police Service assured the public of its commitment to ensuring security, law, and order across the country.”The Police Administration commends the Kuntanase District patrol team for their dedication to duty.

The investigation team continues to examine other exhibits and follow possible leads. At the same time, security operations have been intensified across the country to get the perpetrators arrested and brought to justice,” it assured.

What the law says about robbery and stealingSection 149 of the Criminal Offenses Act states that a person who commits robbery commits a first-degree felony. Per Section 150, “a person who steals a thing commits robbery (a) if in, and for the purpose of stealing the thing, that person uses force or causes harm to any other person, or (b) if that person uses a threat or criminal assault or harm to any other person, with intent to prevent or overcome the resistance of the other person to the stealing of the thing.”

Section 124 of the Criminal Offenses Act also indicates that a person who steals commits a second-degree felony. Where the court that finds a person guilty of stealing is satisfied that, on not less than two previous occasions, the accused was found guilty of stealing, the court shall order that the whole or a part of the term of imprisonment imposed shall be spent in productive hard labour.

A person subjected to such an order is disqualified from election to Parliament or a District Assembly within the meaning of the Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462), for up to five years. Productive hard labour refers to labour in a state farm, state factory, or any other public co-operative or collective enterprise specified by the Minister.

In July, the Police secured a conviction in a four-year-old armed robbery case that occurred in Atonsu, Kumasi. The Kumasi Circuit Court sentenced two individuals to 15 years’ imprisonment for their role in the violent incident.

The convicts, Abass Kasim (26) and Daniel Morro, alias “China” (25), were part of a gang of five that attacked a resident in Atonsu Kumasi on July 31, 2021, around 2:30 a.m.

The gang, wielding a pistol and cutlasses, shot the victim in the abdomen, inflicted multiple cutlass wounds, and robbed him of valuables, including an iPhone 11 worth GHS 5,500, a Samsung phone worth GHS 500, two Apple Watches valued at GHS 3,000, two ladies’ handbags, jewelry, $600, and an unspecified amount of Ghana cedis.

Following investigations, Abass Kasim was arrested on August 12, 2021. During interrogation, he confessed and led police to arrest Daniel Morro. A pistol used in the attack was later retrieved.

On August 19, 2021, the suspects were arraigned before Kumasi Circuit Court 4 and remanded into custody after pleading not guilty.

They reappeared on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, when they were convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each on charges including conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, unlawful entry, abetment of crime, and possession of firearms without authority.

The sentences are to run concurrently. They have since been transferred to the Central Prisons in Kumasi. Meanwhile, three accomplices remain at large.

The police also reported another success after an armed robber, Paul Avortide, was sentenced to 19 years with hard labor for robbery. The 25-year-old, on May 21 at about 4:00 a.m., attacked a pregnant Nigerian woman, Ogechi Chidiebere, at Tsikpota near New Housing, Ho.

Armed with a machete, he robbed her of GHS 3,000 and a Tecno Spark 30c phone valued at GHS 2,500 as she made her way to antenatal care. On June 19, police arrested Harmony Nbonu at Ho Main Market with the stolen phone.

He confessed that Avortide had sold it to him for GHS 850. A coordinated operation led to Avortide’s arrest at Matse, a suburb of Ho, as he attempted to flee.

After investigations, Avortide was charged with robbery under Section 149 of the Criminal Offenses Act, while Nbonu was charged with Dishonestly Receiving under Section 146. They were arraigned before Ho Circuit Court on Tuesday, July 1. Avortide pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 19 years in prison, while Nbonu was acquitted and discharged.

Meanwhile, three individuals suspected in a robbery at Nyanikrom near Shama Junction on Wednesday, July 9, were apprehended. They are Francis Mensah, alias Francis Kwaw (34), Ebenezer Cofie (32), and Samuel Bentum (35). The Western Regional Police Command arrested them following targeted surveillance based on credible intelligence.

Police revealed that the suspects, armed with insider information, planned to rob company officials returning from a bank in Takoradi with salary funds.

On the said day, the suspects ambushed the company vehicle near Unique School Junction at Nyanikrom. They broke the vehicle’s window and made away with the cash. A swift police response led to the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of GHS 149,500.

The suspects are currently in custody, assisting with investigations. However, the company’s driver, Maxwell Kofi Yeboah, alleged to have conspired with them, is at large and being pursued.

“The Western Regional Police Command assures the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspect and bring all perpetrators to justice,” the police said.

Despite these successes, the Police Service continues to suffer casualties in its fight against armed robbery. Several officers have lost their lives while on duty, though the exact number remains unclear.

One such incident occurred in September 2024, when an officer was ambushed and killed by armed robbers at Kwame Peprakrom in the Central Region. In response, the government introduced a GHS 50,000 insurance scheme for officers who lose their lives while on duty.

27 arrested, one dead in Aboabo forest operation to arrest robbers

The IGP Special Operations Team has been involved in a violent confrontation during an intelligence-led operation in the Aboabo Forest area of the Tamale Metropolis.

Police said the officers, while moving through the forest to track gangs suspected of robbery and drug trafficking, came under sudden fire from a group of armed criminals.

A source confirmed that one of the suspects was wounded during the exchange, as investigations continue.

“The attack placed the lives of team members in danger. Acting in line with police rules of engagement and legitimate self-defence protocols, the officers returned fire to neutralise the threat,” the report said.

According to GhanaWeb, the source added that the remaining armed suspects fled the scene with their weapons as reinforcements arrived.

Reports indicate that the team attempted to assist the injured suspect and transport him to the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

Upon arrival, however, the attending medical officer declared the suspect dead.

The source noted that the body has been taken to the mortuary for safekeeping, pending an autopsy.

The incident confirmed earlier intelligence suggesting that criminal elements in the area were heavily armed and ready to resist arrest violently.

A joint intelligence-led operation between the Atadeka Police Patrol Team and the Ashaiman Police Intelligence Directorate has resulted in the arrest of a notorious 25-year-old armed robbery suspect, Seth Tetteh, popularly known as ‘Wonder’.

He is known to be a ringleader of a robbery syndicate operating across Ashaiman and its environs

According to a report by Myjoyonline.com, his arrest followed the earlier detention of his two accomplices, who are currently on remand, standing trial at the Ashaiman Circuit Court.

‘Wonder’ was detained around 3:00 p.m. near the Ashaiman China Mall area, and authorities believe his arrest will significantly disrupt criminal activities targeting businesses and residents within the municipality.

The arrest represents a major breakthrough for the Tema Police Command as it intensifies efforts to clamp down on violent crime within the municipality.

According to police, Wonder is a well-known repeat offender linked to several violent incidents, including residential, street, and industrial robberies.

Investigators also identified him as the mastermind and leader behind a recent armed robbery at a concrete yard factory.

In the aftermath of his arrest, the Tema Police Command issued a strong caution to the public about the purchasing of stolen goods, especially electronic devices that criminals often sell at low prices.

“Police is using this medium to caution receivers of stolen phones, as their arrest has legal consequences for dishonestly receiving.”

The Command also expressed appreciation to its leadership for the support extended toward ongoing security operations.

In September, ten people suspected of carrying out armed robberies on rural banks and financial institutions nationwide were taken into custody by the Ghana Police Service.

A special operation led to the arrest of the group, who had long instilled fear in communities across the Ashanti, Ahafo, Western, Central and Eastern regions.

Among those detained were the supposed leader, Akwesi Agyei, known as Cobra, together with Ibrahim Alhassan, Samuel Appiah (Akwesi Mugu), Francis Acquah (Preman), David Obuobi (Wasty), Martin Akansina (One Billion), Nana Yaw Frimpong (Mystical), Kojo Atingawo (Borga), Samuel Akwasi Gyan and Stephen Sey.

Police confirmed that three additional members of the gang died during an exchange of gunfire, while efforts to track down the remaining suspects are underway.

At a press briefing in Accra on September 24, 2024, Inspector-General of Police Christian Yohuno revealed that the group had operated for more than a year, creating widespread fear among residents and targeted financial institutions.

He noted that the coordinated operation was the result of six months of intelligence gathering, surveillance and detailed investigations in areas including Ejisu Achiaakrom, Atonsu-Kyirapatre, Obuasi, Kaase and Buoho.

Officers seized 14 firearms—ranging from AK-47s and pump-action guns to pistols—along with large amounts of ammunition, vehicles, motorbikes, mobile phones and equipment used for the attacks.

COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the CID, reported that the suspects had been linked to robberies at Adansi Rural Bank (Fomena), Lower Pra Rural Bank (Inchaban), Ecobank (Kenyasi), Ahafo Community Bank (Kukuom), Asokore Rural Bank (Kumasi), and several other locations.

At Fomena, for example, the attackers climbed over the perimeter wall, restrained the security guards and used an electric cutter to break into the vault before fleeing with cash and weapons. In the Kenyasi incident, they subdued two police officers and took their rifles.

Investigators identified one of the retrieved rifles as belonging to Corporal Francis Adu Yaw, who died on the Bibiani-Goaso road in November 2024, while two others matched police weapons stolen during the Kenyasi Ecobank robbery.

COP Donkor indicated that Cobra was apprehended on September 18 at Esereso Adagya, where officers discovered two rifles hidden underwater and a Toyota Noah minibus.

His arrest paved the way for more breakthroughs, including the capture of David Obuobi (Wasty), in whose possession police found pump-action guns, pistols and ammunition.

Investigators later picked up another suspect, Stephen Sey, who had a stolen police rifle concealed inside his vehicle.

She added that some of the arrested individuals have admitted their roles, and both identification parades and items retrieved from them have linked the suspects to the various crimes.

The police say investigations are still ongoing as they move to apprehend the rest of the syndicate members.

  • Mobile Money agent attacked by robbers in broad daylight at Tumu, elope with GHC600K

Mobile Money agent attacked by robbers in broad daylight at Tumu, elope with GHC600K

Five unidentified armed individuals have attacked and robbed a mobile money vendor at gunpoint in Zongo, a suburb of Tumu in the Sissala East Municipality.

The armed robbers are said to have stolen GH¢600,000.00 along with several mobile phones during the robbery, which occurred on April 22, 2024, at approximately 4:30 pm.

The victim, Mr. Fuseini Issaka Quendar, a 45-year-old businessman, promptly reported the incident to the Sissala East Municipal police command. Recounting the harrowing experience to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Fuseini described how the five assailants, all clad in long black jackets and riding three unregistered motorcycles, brandished AK 47 rifles as they forcibly entered his shop.

Once inside, the robbers coerced Mr. Fuseini and everyone else in the shop to lie down at gunpoint. After collecting the money, they fired shots within the shop and shattered all the glass.

Mr. Fuseini recalled that one of the robbers threatened to shoot him in Mossie language, while others urged him to slit his throat.

“He raised the machete towards my head, but I hid my head under the bench and the cutlass landed on the wooden bench and they left the cutlass in the shop and took off”, he explained.

After the robbery, Mr. Fuseini recounted that the armed men fired several shots into the air before fleeing through the crowded Tumu lorry station, making their escape towards the St. Clares Vocational School along the Gwollu road. It took approximately 15 minutes before people began emerging from their shops and hiding spots.

Mr. Fuseini also mentioned an incident earlier that day, where a young boy of Fulani descent had left his phone at the shop to be charged. However, after the robbery, the boy and his mobile phone were both missing.

When questioned about why he had such a large sum of money in his shop, Mr. Fuseini explained that the money belonged to maize buyers who typically conducted business during the weekend.

“During weekends a lot of people transact business in cash in CFA, Cedis and others across the borders so we only (pick cash) on Friday and use it for the weekend business”, the victim stated.

Following the robbery, Mr. Fuseini reported that he contacted the police, but they took approximately an hour to arrive at the scene. The police have since launched an investigation, taking statements from Mr. Fuseini and urging him to report any further information about the incident. However, no arrests have been made yet.

In a show of solidarity, over 15 mobile money operators in Tumu marched to the Paramount Chief of Tumu’s Palace a day after the robbery, demanding increased security measures. They threatened to cease their services if security in the area was not improved.

This recent incident adds to a series of similar robbery attacks in the region. About six months ago, another daylight robbery occurred on the Navrongo-Wa road, where close to GH¢400,000.00 was stolen. Additionally, three weeks ago, a robbery took place during a market day in Bujan, where traders’ money was stolen. Last year, armed robbers attacked a mobile money vendor in Jefisi, collecting all his money and disrupting the market activities for the day.

Residents of Tumu are concerned about the increasing audacity of the armed men, who now brazenly attack civilians in town centers with AK47 rifles. They fear that such attacks may escalate if not promptly addressed by the authorities.

In response to these incidents, Mr. Fuseini Yakubu Batong, the Sissala East Municipal Chief Executive, stated that an emergency security meeting had been convened to address the situation.

“The destination was right after the Police Barrier, about two houses. The assailants reportedly beat them for not having sufficient money, and the driver along with other occupants in the front seat were shot during the attack.

Mr Adamu Kantong, the driver, aged 56 years, who survived the gunshot, said: “I got to a pothole between Vamboi and Bandei around 1900hrs and was stopped by a man with a torchlight.”

“As I stopped, I struggled to open the driver’s door, and the next thing was the gunshot, which pierced through my middle ring and small fingers, I immediately lost control of myself,” he added.

Mr Kantong said, “The other passenger sitting in the front also had his hand damaged by the bullets before they took all our phones and every penny on us and made all of us lie down.”

Mr. Kantong, after being rushed to the hospital following a robbery, was treated and discharged, but unfortunately lost essential documents during the incident. He attributed the rise in robberies to the poor state of the roads and urged authorities to address the issue.

Expressing concern for the affected communities, Mr. Kantong appealed to residents to be vigilant in case any stolen items, such as Ghana cards, health insurance cards, driver’s licenses, and other documents, were found.

Among the victims was a market woman who recounted losing everything and being physically assaulted with sticks during the robbery. Additionally, two Kia trucks returning from Funsi and Kojikperi markets, as well as others from Ouagadougou, and several motorcycles, were targeted.

Sissala East Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Kumpe Gbele, confirmed ongoing investigations into the robberies and assured the public of enhanced security patrols. Furthermore, on November 25, 2023, a Fulbe settler in Sentie was shot and killed in his hut, while a driver was robbed near the Sissili River close to Basisan.

“At the right time, the Police will give the public information of where they have reached with investigations”, Mr Gbele said.

Mr. Gbele emphasized the importance of drivers seeking police escorts regardless of their destination, citing the availability of enough police officers to ensure public safety. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Effia Tenge, Head of Public Affairs Unit (PAU) of the Command told the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Tuesday.

She said the three conspired and robbed a Pharmacy shop at Dansoman Exhibition, where they parked their unregistered Royal motorbike in front of the pharmacy shop, entered and ordered the sales girl to hand over all monies to them at gunpoint.

DSP Tenge said Alhassan entered the manager’s office and took an unspecified amount of money in addition, adding that in an attempt to escape, an alarm was raised leading to his arrest.

She said his accomplice, Yakubu who tried to escape with the motorbike was also arrested by a Police patrol team.

She said Iddrisu was later arrested at his hideout at Mataheko where they all confessed having committed separate robberies under the same modus including one at a boutique also in Dansoman.

DSP Tenge said they also confessed being behind a number of attacks and robbery on motor riders in and around New Achimota, Dansoman KitKat, Kaneshie, and Awudome all suburbs in Accra. She said “a typical case in perspective was the attack, snatching of motorbike and murder of one Ahmed Mohammed on 20th January, 2020 at Abbosey Okai Fan Milk area”.

According madam Tenge once they succeeded in getting the motorbike it would be taken away but any resistance from the victim may lead to his death.

She said sometimes they monitored areas where activities of motorbikes were mostly concentrated and devise strategies to launch attacks, other times they pilfer unattended to or parked motorbikes.

Madam Tenge said the stolen bikes would later be used in facilitating further criminal activities in the metropolis or send to the Northern part of the country to be sold.
