Former Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, shared that he would have been thrilled if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had chosen him as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate for the 2024 elections.

In an interview with Asaasepa Radio, the Bosomtwe MP expressed his deep desire to serve both his party and the country in such a high position. However, he emphasized that he is in no hurry and will let God guide his political path.

“What I know is that God has His plans for man. When the time is up, nobody can stop what God has caused to happen. But I will not rush ahead of God; I will allow Him to do as He wishes. Whatever He asks me to do, I will obey. God’s time is the best. I have said that I would have been very happy if I was selected as the running mate.”

Many political analysts saw Dr. Osei Adutwum as a strong contender to be Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate for the 2024 elections under the then-ruling NPP.

He was widely respected for his hard work, calm nature, and broad appeal across different political groups in Ghana.

However, the party ultimately chose the former Energy Minister and Manhyia South MP as the running mate instead.

In the end, the NPP faced a heavy and humiliating loss in the 2024 elections, winning only 88 out of 275 parliamentary seats.

I never wanted running mate position; I can’t speak good English – Chairman Wontumi

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has unequivocally stated that he never aspired to become the running mate for the party in the upcoming 2024 elections.

In an interview with Onua FM on July 15, 2024, Wontumi humorously pointed out his limitation with English proficiency, emphasizing that he would not pursue a position that could potentially make him a topic of discussion due to his language skills.

“I never wanted the running mate position. I can’t even speak better English to become a running mate. I have a limit to my English, so I won’t go and say anything for me to become a topic of discussion because of my English,” Wontumi explained candidly.

Despite dismissing any personal ambitions for the role, Wontumi expressed strong support for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, who has been selected as the NPP’s running mate.

He highlighted the importance of unity within the party and reaffirmed his endorsement of NAPO’s candidacy alongside Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the presidency.

“We are committed to ensuring their victory in the 2024 elections,” Wontumi affirmed, dispelling rumors of internal conflict within the NPP regarding NAPO’s selection.

He emphasized that his role included endorsing NAPO, contributing to the party’s unified front as they prepare for the electoral contest.

  • Should I be elected as Bawumia’s running mate, I will do it and do it nicely – Ursula Owusu

Owusu-Ekuful is in contention for the running mate position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), alongside other candidates such as Energy Minister Mathew Opoku Prempeh.

Despite her qualifications, the Communications Minister emphasized that she will not lobby for the position.

“This position is not something we lobby for. If women are running affairs, it’s not bad. I love working and doing every job assigned to me. I won’t go begging, but when I get the chance, I will do it and do it nicely,” she said on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Thursday.

She continued, “For now, I am a Minister and an MP and doing my job very well. If they mention my name to go and do another job, I will do it gladly, but for now, I have to concentrate on what I have been assigned to do.”

NDC to announce Mahama’s running mate today

National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to unveil its vice presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections, accompanying presidential nominee John Dramani Mahama, by February 29, 2024.

This disclosure came from the party’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, during an interview with GhanaWeb’s Daniel Oduro on the Election Desk on February 28, 2024.

Gyamfi mentioned in the interview that both the party and the public should anticipate a formal announcement later in the week, following the finalisation of the decision by the council of elders and the national executive committee of the NDC.

“The rank and file of the party and the general public should be expecting to hear a formal announcement tomorrow when the decision is eventually finalised, subject to the advice of the Council of Elders and the national executive committee.

“I am very optimistic that this is a decision that would resonate not just with our grassroots but also with the entire nation,” he stated.

He added that the flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, had been thinking and consulting on the matter for a long time and that he had made his choice.

He said that the flagbearer, however, needed to seek the formal advice of the major stakeholders for approval before the announcement.

“The flagbearer has been thinking and consulting on this matter. He is ready with his consultation, and he has a choice.

But as the constitution and systems of our party require, he needs to seek formally the advice of the Council of Elders and present the same to the National Council of the party, which is the second highest decision-making body in the party, for advice before the same is announced,” he stated.

“… The candidate is very clear in his mind as to who he wants to be his running mate to complement him and deliver his vision,” he added.

  • Osofo Kyiri Abosom to select a woman as his running mate

Osofo Kyiri Abosom to select a woman as his running mate

The Reverend Christian Kwabena Andrews, Founder and flag bearer of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), has declared his intention to choose a woman as his running mate for the upcoming 2024 General Election.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Rev. Andrews expressed his confidence in the capabilities of women to bring about positive change and hopes that having a female running mate will enhance his chances in the December 7 polls.

Founder of the Life Assembly Worship Centre, commonly known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, Rev. Andrews specified his preference for a running mate from the Western Region.

Despite being Ashanti himself, he emphasized the importance of the candidate being a woman. He tasked his officers with finding a suitable nominee for consideration.

“I am an Ashanti and this time I would prefer my candidate to come from the Western Region. The person can come from any other region, but it will be a woman.

“I have tasked my officers to search for a suitable person and nominate her for my consideration,” he said.

GUM made waves in the 2020 presidential election, securing the third position ahead of traditional parties like the Convention People’s Party, People’s National Convention, and the Progressive People’s Party.

With 105,548 votes, representing 0.805% of the total ballots cast, Rev. Andrews aims to build on the party’s achievements.

The party plans to continue its door-to-door campaign strategy, mobilizing voters nationwide.

Nominations for parliamentary aspirants will open in March. Rev. Andrews stressed that GUM is committed to avoiding the distribution of money to voters, expressing concern over the monetization of Ghana’s political processes.

Rev. Andrews outlined the party’s focus on job creation, with plans to revive defunct factories built by Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The manifesto will detail a roadmap for achieving this goal, along with the establishment of factories in every region and the operation of a free port to boost economic activities.

Addressing concerns about currency reliance, Rev. Andrews proposed a system of barter arrangements with international trade partners to reduce or eliminate dependence on foreign currencies. The party’s manifesto will also feature policies such as monthly stipends for the elderly and children.

  • I stepped back in NDC running mate race for fresh faces – Prof Kwesi Botchwey

Professor Kwesi Botchwey, Ghana’s longest-serving Finance Minister has disclosed that he decided to step back in the running mate nomination of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The reason, he said was to allow for fresh faces to take up that position and that anybody who is articulate and understands the fundamentals of governance fits that position.

He, however, disagreed with suggestions that it is only persons with economics background that fits the vice-presidential position or slot.

Responding to what he makes of the selection of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate of Mr John Dramani Mahama, Prof Botchwey said she has what it takes to partner the NDC flagbearer.

He said she has proven track records to partner the flagbearer to capture power in the December 7, 2020 polls.

Prof Botchwey’s name came up last year as a possible choice as running mate to the NDC flagbearer.

But reacting after Prof Opoku-Agyemang was selected, Prof Botchwey said: “I think that every party, our party [NDC] especially has forged a generational transition so that we, the older ones can step back a bit to provide guidance and support.”

“We can’t have the same generation or people leading the party. That was my view and I think I’ve been vindicated, you’ve seen Naana, she is very focused, she is very driven, she is humble, she is well spoken, she is every bit of what we will want to see in the vice-president. So this is about Naana, it is not about Kwesi Botchwey.”

”There is nothing in our laws, in our constitution anywhere that says that the vice-president must be an economist. What you need is to be a good social analyst, a good social scientist, with the tools to ask the right questions and be focused on the business of national development and that is all you need.”
