Mayhem as gunshots fired at Sagnarigu voter registration centre

Disturbances erupted in the Sagnarigu constituency of the Northern Region on Sunday when gunshots were fired at the voters registration centre.

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have each accused the other of being responsible for the incident.

The gunfire started after a vehicle arrived at the registration centre, carrying people intending to register for their voter cards. Following an argument about the new arrivals, unidentified gunmen stormed the centre and began shooting.

Northern Regional Organizer for the NDC, Abdallah A. Baba, accused the NPP of orchestrating the attack. He claimed that NDC members had come to the centre peacefully when armed men emerged from nearby bushes and started firing.

Baba alleged that the gunmen were linked to the NPP, citing information that NPP executives had met the previous day to plan disruptions.

In contrast, the NPP Chairman for the Sagnarigu constituency, Alhaji Musah Fuseini Dangoomah, denied the allegations and countered that the gunmen were from the NDC. He asserted that the NPP is committed to a peaceful registration process and that the accusations are false.

Both parties have called for thorough investigations to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

‘Lies! And I will not accept’ it: Sagnarigu constituency chairman clashes with Kennedy Agyapong over GHC100k bribe claims

A tense situation unfolded during a meeting in Tamale on Saturday, October 21, 2023, involving presidential aspirant Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong and Alhaji Dagoma, the NPP Constituency Chairman for Sagnarigu, along with his delegates.

As part of his tour in the Northern Region, the aspirant convened with delegates from the Sagnarigu and Tamale North constituencies in Tamale.

During the gathering, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong claimed that the constituency chairmen had been offered GHC100,000 each to influence their votes in the special delegate conference.

This accusation didn’t sit well with the outspoken Sagnarigu chairman, known for his straightforward approach. In response, he immediately requested the microphone and addressed the delegates, vehemently asserting that the presidential aspirant was spreading baseless falsehoods.

Chairman Dagoma said, “The man is telling lies. He is lying. I am the chairman of the constituency. I voted in the superdelegates conference, and nobody gave me GHC100,000 to vote. I will not accept such lies from somebody who wants to lead this party.”

The response by the no-nonsense chairman attracted loud applause from the delegates, prompting a few supporters of the aspirant to start casting insults at the delegates.

It was reported that tempers went so high that the elders had to intervene to calm the situation, and the meeting was hurriedly concluded by the presidential aspirant.

Aggrieved NPP members vandalise Sagnarigu office

The Sagnarigu branch of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has experienced an episode of vandalism at the hands of young party members.

This occurrence marks the second attack within a few months.

Reportedly, the aggrieved members who perpetrated the attack expressed their dissatisfaction with the local leadership of the party.

Insights from the Sagnarigu constituency suggest that this act of vandalism is a result of allegations concerning the diversion of fertilizers by the constituency executives.

These fertilizers, initially intended for distribution among the party’s supporters, are believed to have been misused, fueling internal tensions.

Furthermore, the report discloses that on Friday, July 21, the NPP’s local office in the area also fell victim to vandalism by irate party supporters.

The underlying unrest stems from an alleged denial of access to nomination forms for Dr. Wahab Alhassan.

The youth reportedly accused the constituency executives of favoring the 2020 candidate, Felicia Tettey, by seemingly allowing her to run uncontested in the party’s upcoming parliamentary primaries.

A.B.A. Fuseini debunks being fanned after defeat in NDC primaries

Member of Parliament (MP) for Sagnarigu, Alhaji A.B.A. Fuseini, has denied reports that his supporters fanned him following his defeat in the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) primaries.

He clarified that he was nowhere near the polling center when the results were announced, dismissing the claim as a mere fabrication.

According to him, he had already left the center with his team to find some food before the results were counted. It was during their time at a restaurant that they received news of his defeat.

Asserting his contentment with the outcome, he dismissed the notion of being in a hysterical state and asserted that such claims were purely imaginary.

During an interview, he addressed the issue, stating, “I want to respond to the statement suggesting that I was in a hysterical state upon the declaration and required assistance from numerous people fanning me. I want to make it clear that no such incident occurred. When the results were announced, I was far away from the scene. My team and I had stepped outside to eat as I had not eaten all day. It was during this time that I discovered the results, and I wasn’t even in close proximity for supporters to fan me since the results had turned against me.

“…I believe it is a product of someone’s imagination. I want to emphasize that I was satisfied with the verdict, and that’s what unfolded during the voting. I urge for this false claim to be debunked as it holds no truth,” he added.

Australian Government supports Sagnarigu shea butter processors

The Australian government has gone to the aid of some shea butter processors in Sagnarigu.

A total of 150 women shea butter processors in the Sagnarigu Municipality in the Northern Region received the support to increase their production and enhance their livelihoods.

The support formed part of a $373,000 grant launched in 2022 by the Australian Government to support some selected African countries including Ghana.

The beneficiaries have been presented with start-up kits such as processing roasters, basins, mini-water storage tanks, buckets and oil extraction cooking pots.

They have also benefited from capacity building on financial management, savings, and record keeping.

The women are beneficiaries of the “Increasing Productivity and Profitability of Women-Owned Small-Scale Businesses” project implemented by Children Believe, a child focus organisation in Ghana and the Markaz Al Bishara Child Development Programme.

    Visit

The support was made known when the Second Secretary at the Australian High Commission in Ghana, Harriet Williams, and some other development partners visited Katariga and Tampe-Kukuo in the Sagnarigu Municipality, to interact with the project beneficiaries.

The visit was also to interact with the project partners to identify gaps that were created during the implementation and how to sustain the project.

Speaking to the media during the visit, Ms Williams said “I must say I am very impressed with what I have seen, I know a lot of works have gone into these and I wish to thank Children Believe for a good work done. We will continue to support, especially in the area of women empowerment.”

The Country Director of Children Believe, Esenam Kavi Desouza, said the participation of women in profitable small-scale businesses was essential to ensuring that their rights were recognised and to enable them to have control over their personal lives, while exerting influence in their homes and communities.

She also said though shea butter production was the main livelihood for over 900,000 rural women in Ghana, they benefited less from the final value of the commodity, hence the need for the implementation of the project.
