Awuku, who is also the former National Organizer of the NPP, stated that he does not believe in the “aduru woso” (it is your time) principle when it comes to choosing a flagbearer for the party.

Instead, he believes in selecting someone who can do the job well.

“I don’t believe in the ‘aduru woso’ (it is your time) principle, every election goes with its own strength and whenever there is vacancy people fight for it, with his politics of inclusion, he draws everyone closer, you will also realize that he is tolerant religiously.

“This is a man that when you invite him to church programs he goes to, you will see him in the Mosque and in the Church, he doesn’t discriminate and he respects everyone also.

He emphasized that as a one-time organizer at the youth and national levels, he has an eye for successful mobilization and campaigning.

Illegal lottery operators to be fished out by undercover security agents – Sammi Awuku

The Director-General of the National Lottery Authority, Sammi Awuku, has indicated that there are plans by the National Security, working with it, to start undercover works at fishing out persons engaged in illegal lottery activities.

According to the NLA boss, the global loss of revenue by the World Lottery Association, is indication that there is the need for Ghana to also tighten its belt and ensure that it does not also continue to face losses.

With the support of the state agencies in charge of security, Sammi Awuku said that they are hopeful of turning the situation of revenue generated by the NLA around.

“We continue to dialogue with our stakeholders and partners. We do not charge 35%. Anybody charging 35% commission is illegal, and I think that is what has fed into the public in the illegal space.

“Last year alone, the World Lottery Association estimates that the global body lost $1.3 trillion through illegal lottery activities. And, we are hoping that this year, the story will be different, and that is why’ve been very serious about engaging the state security agencies.

“And in the coming weeks, the National Security and the National Signals Bureau will be operating undercover, to make sure that we arrest all persons who are engaged in illegal lottery,” he explained.

NPP’s most influential lad Sammi Awuku endorses Bawumia

Former National Youth Organiser for the ruling New Patriotic Party, Sammi Awuku, has waded into the conversation on the next flagbearer to lead the party come 2024 in hopes of retaining power.

Mr Sammi Awuku, currently the Director General of the National Lottery Authority, has thrown his weight behind Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is yet to declare his intention to contest in the flagbearership race.

In an interview on Asempa FM on Monday, April 3, 2023, monitored by The Independent Ghana, Mr Awuku explained that his support for the Vice President stems from the worth-emulating values Dr Bawumia possesses. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is a very strong, tolerant and open- minded young man, he said.

“He looks into the future with courage and optimism. I’m fond of him.

“I asked him two critical questions:  Why do you want to be president? He told me his major focus if he should ever become President one day is how to create a future of opportunities for young people,” Mr Awuku said.

The 38-year-old who played a vital role in mobilizing the youth leading to NPP’s victory in the 2016 general election further lauded the Veep for his unified spirit and sacrifices made for the party.

“That politics of inclusion for me is something that is admirable. I’ve watched him move with people who had supported other candidates in the past. Someone like Fredrick Opare Ansah. Day in and day out, you see new people around him,” he stated.

Mr Awuku noted that it took bravery and discipline to come up against the legal team of the National Democratic Congress in the 2020 election petition case at the Supreme Court for eight months without losing one’s composure.

“For somebody, to sit there when it mattered most to defend his party’s position and resolve for 8 months continuously and facing the NDC legal team is not easy. Lawyers Tsatsu Tsikata, Tony Lithur – deadly combination with Baasit Bamba. For 8 months he (Dr Bawumia) never lost his cool. He had his composure and defended the NPP’s position.”

According to him, “if the NPP opens nomination, and his Excellency the Vice President says he will run, I (will support him),” adding that “I think he will make a great president.”

The NLA boss has however entreated the Vice President to brace himself for intense “grilling” should he decide to declare his presidential ambition.

In his view, this is because “he (would) compete against strong and capable people in the party.”

Former Trade Minister, John Alan Kyerematen, former Agric Minister, Dr Afriyie Akoto, former Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko, Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Presidential Spokesperson and General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyepong, former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Joe Ghartey, who is also the MP for Essikado-Ketan; a former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai-Nimoh, and a former Minister of State, Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku, who is also a former MP for Offinso North, have all declared their intention to contest for the NPP presidential primaries to help break the 8-year-cycle.

The ruling party has announced that nominations for the Presidential primaries will open on May 26, 2023 and close on June 24, 2023.

On November 4, 2023, the NPP would hold its National Congress to elect its flagbearer for the next polls.

  • Election 2024: Regaining parliamentary seats must be the NPP’s priority – Sammi Awuku

Election 2024: Regaining parliamentary seats must be the NPP’s priority – Sammi Awuku

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) needs to concentrate on restoring its majority advantage in Parliament, according to Sammi Awuku, Director General of Ghana’s National Lottery Authority.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, April 4, the former National Organiser of the NPP said he anticipates a battle for several parliamentary seats in the 2024 elections.

He, however, added that the NPP will beat the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) through various strategies that will be deployed by the NPP.

“I think that the NPP must focus on regaining our lost seats because there will be a battle for Parliament. But I think we [NPP] will beat the NDC through strategy.”

Mr Awuku also hinted at the possibility of contesting for the Akropong parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NPP.

According to him, several Chiefs and Opinion Leaders in the area are convincing him to contest for the Akropong seat.

The NPP controlled 169 parliamentary seats after the 2016 polls while the NDC had 106.

However, after the 2020 polls, the NPP lost its strong grip on Parliament reducing its seats to 137 while the NDC also had 137 seats and one independent candidate.

  • Learn from gov’t; cut down expenses – Sammi Awuku to Ghanaians

Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Sammi Awuku, has called on the entire citizenry to downsize their expenditure by reassessing their needs and wants.

Speaking to the media on the economic crisis Ghana is currently facing, the NLA boss mentioned that the government is adjusting its expenditure, and to make its actions count,  citizens also have to do the same.

“We are in difficult times and as the government is cutting down on its expenditure, we as citizens also have to do the same. If you used to consume a tin of milk at a go, currently, you can’t do that. We must cut down on expenditure. Government is doing its part,” he said.

Currently, the government is implementing a 30% cut in the salaries of political office holders, including the President, Vice President, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, MMDCEs, and SOE appointees.

Also, there is a 30% cut in discretionary expenditures for ministries, departments, and agencies.

In his latest address to the nation on the state of the current economy, President Akufo-Addo noted that his government will “reduce our total public debt to GDP ratio to some fifty-five percent (55%) in present value terms by 2028, with the servicing of our external debt pegged at not more than eighteen percent (18%) of our annual revenue also by 2028.”

In his submission, Mr Sammi Awuku further bemoaned the activities of speculators which have led to the further depreciation of the local currency, particularly against the United States Dollar, in recent times.

“We don’t print dollars. It is only that you receive, which you circulate. We should not be panicking. There are people with no linkage with the foreign currency but because he or she has heard that people are converting their cedi to dollars, he also does the same even though he would have no use for the foreign currency,” he said.

As many feared that they would no longer be able to procure the quantity of dollars they needed, there was a mad rush for the American ‘greenback’, further eroding the value of the cedi.

Ghana is heavily dependent on imported goods, and with the lack of dollars in the system and its high demand, there has been a significant rise in the general prices of goods and services.

Transport fares have risen above normal levels due to the rise in petroleum products, which are among the commodities imported into the country.

However, it has emerged that some traders and businesses are inflating prices beyond what is expected.

According to Mr Sammi Awuku, such actions should not be encouraged, and over-pricing of goods and services must be put to an end immediately.

“I’m pleading with drivers and traders to stop exploiting Ghanaians. Amidst the economic crisis, a businessman has decided to forfeit a profit of GH5 and go for GH20. What we forget is that when someone buys it for GH20, he or she would sell it for GH35,” Mr Awuku said.

The body of nations with over 100 lottery bodies approved the proposal by majority decision with only two members voting ‘No’ and one abstention.

  • Its possible to have more seats in the Volta Region Sammi Awuku

National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sammi Awuku says that it is possible for the party to win more seats in the Volta Region come December Election.

According to Sammi Awuku, the fact that the party was able to capture five seats in the Upper West Region in the last election clearly shows that there is a possibility in having more seats in the Volta Region. Speaking to the press he said “ If we moved from Zero in Upper West to Five seats in 2016, it is possible to have more seats in the Volta Region”.

He stated that the Opposition Party National Democratic Congress (NDC) is known for remembering the people in the Volta Region only in election years and as such the people should vote according to developments that have come their way.

“The NDC only remembers Volta Region in an election year. If you love the person it should be morning to evening. It should be throughout the four years of your existence when you were in government, the eight years you were in government. Clearly the people of Volta Region, they will decide where to cast their ballots and who to cast it for depending on their circumstances and the development that has come their way”.

The Volta Regional Chairman of the Party Makafui Kofi Woanya also believes the party can achieve its aims and objectives with stability and submission.

  • Sammi Awuku seen with Hawa Koomson after gunshot incident

It is becoming clear that, nothing will happen to the Special Development Initiatives Minister, over her gun-firing incident this week, despite a groundswell of public opinion from individuals, religious groups, civil society organizations and professional bodies, calling on her to either resign or be fired by President Akufo-Addo.

In what appears to be a rescue mission by the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, he had been seen touring the Awutu Senya East (Kasoa) Constituency in the company of the beleaguered Mavis Hawa Koomson, monitoring the ongoing voters’ registration exercise.

The exercise by the Electoral Commission (EC), had gotten the minister moving around the Constituency with armed thugs, and personally shooting into buildings.

The gunshots forced a poor grandmother to abandon her pot of banku, rushing to save herself and grandkids. Three motorbikes were also burnt by Hawa Koomson‘s thugs in the process.

The heavy condemnation and boos Hawa Koomson received from all quarters, following the incident at the Step to Christ registration center at the Awutu Senya East in the Central Region, sent her into hibernation, until she was spotted with the NPP National Organizer, on Friday, again touring the Constituency.

After the tour, Mr Awuku, took to his facebook page with pictures and wrote “We continued our monitoring of the ongoing Voter Registration Exercise in Awutu Senya East (Kasoa), Efutu, Cape Coast and other parts of the Central Region today! Kudos to our Parliamentary Candidates, Party Executives and Our Agents for their resilience and vigilance so far. #GETINVOLVED #GETREGISTERED #4MORE4NANA”.

The NPP National Organiser is not the only one solidarizing with the minister known for her uncouth behaviour and vile language.

The NPP National Chairman, had also defended the minister, describing her as one of the calmest female representatives of the party in Parliament, who cannot be tagged as a violent person.

According to Freddie Blay, calls by National Peace Council, Christian Council, IMANI Ghana, OccupyGhana, political actors, journalists, security experts among others for the sacking of the minister, because she fired a gun at a voter registration centre, is “absolutely needless”, adding that such calls should be “totally disregarded”.

“It is most worrying to see different groups expected to be more objective in their submissions, rather fall for the propaganda and misrepresentation of the opposition NDC in relations to the matter.”

“With the unfolding evidence and facts surrounding the incident, it is clear that her actions were in self-defence to the unwarranted attacks on her and her team by masked motorists invited by the NDC to disrupt the EC registration process in her constituency,” he said.

“There is no evidence of any sort that can suggest her to be a violent individual, even in the face of extreme provocation.”

Mr Blay, a lawyer by profession and former MP for Ellembelle in the Western Region, further suggested that her critics were being insensitive.

“They have failed to evaluate the extent of fear and trauma this lady, mother and leader had experienced following the siege on her by sufficiently outnumbered armed hooligans hired by the NDC to disrupt the EC registration process.”

Hawa Koomson, has claimed she was acting in self-defence by firing the warning shots during a confrontation between her people and some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the registration centre, but the questions have been asked about the reason behind her people burning of the three motorbikes.

Interestingly, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, another leading member of the NPP and a cousin of President Akufo-Addo, has also gone to the defense of under-fire minister of Special Initiatives, saying she fired the gunshots at the registration center because she wanted to scare away some people who were out to bully her.

In a post on Facebook, Gabby, who is a lawyer, said he can’t criticize Hawa Koomson, because she sought to only defend herself.

He wrote: “In this male-dominated world of politics, I struggle to find serious fault against a woman MP, who decides to stand up to alleged bullies and she does by not pointing her gun at them, but firing in the air”.

“It is easy for you and I to feel she overreacted. She probably did. I will not doubt that. She probably panicked. Many of us have a licensed gun which we carry in our glove compartment and we pray to never feel the need to use it”.

“I am very uncomfortable joining the bandwagon to go after a woman who used a weapon, not to harm any person, but to scare away people he felt could harm her and others. I am looking at the level of venom in the attacks she is receiving. I wonder if there is a subtle misogynism at play here. This is not to say I endorse any threat of violence whether in self-defense or not by or against man or woman”.

“My problem is that when it comes to the affairs of the few women in our frontline politics my instinct is to side with them until otherwise convinced. So far, I am still trusting my instinct,”

Characteristics of her, Communications Minister, who will defend anything an NPP member does, indeed, declared her fullest support for Hawa Koomson, the Ewutu Senya East MP over her registration centre gangsterism.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful,Ã? ?Ã? in a tweet on Friday, said the Special Development Initiatives Minister, was only defending herself at a time she felt threatened.

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful, who is also a lawyer by profession and doubles as MP for Ablekuma West, stressed that Ms Koomson has the right to self-defence and she exercised that right, when some people alleged to be NDC, threatened her life.

“I stand with Hawa Koomson. If I had a gun on me in April 2012 when NDC [National Democratic Congress] sponsored thugs attacked me in Odododiodio, I would have shot them to protect myself. I didn’t and the rest is history,” her tweet read.

The NPP’s Director of Communication, Lawyer Yaw Buaben Asamoa, who is also MP for Adenta, also defended the Awutu Senya East MP, while speaking on ”Kokrokoo” on Peace FM, he asked what Hawa Koomson’s crime is.

To him, there should be a cause for a woman to fire gunshots at a place like a registration centre, and cautioned the NDC not to pre-empt investigations by the Police, stressing Hawa Koomson deserves a hearing.

”What crime has Hawa committed? Have we concluded the investigations? How do you claim she is a criminal? Where from the big insults on her? Why can’t they wait patiently for the findings? When she goes for the Police interrogation and she is found culpable, the Police can deal with her but what if the investigations check out that she was indeed telling the truth?”, he questioned.

Meanwhile, the Central Regional Police Command has retrieved the gun fired by the Special Development Minister, after they invited her to file her statement.

The Police retrieved the weapon and ammunition together with the license on Thursday. It was preceded by the release of four suspects namely; Sulley Razak, Majeed Amadu, Suleman Yusuf and Razak Musa on bail. They have been provisionally charged with disruption of the process, discharge of firearms without authority and causing unlawful damage.

Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service in the Central Region, DSP Irene Oppong, disclosed this after the interrogation.

“We are in possession of her gun, ammunition and the accompanying licence. The case docket is no more here at the Cape Coast regional CID but at the headquarters in Accra,” she said.

But it is unlikely the minister will be charged too although she has admitted she fired the gun.

  • NPP won’t have an extravagant campaign like NDC did in 2016 – Sammi Awuku

Every election year is filled with massive campaigns and other activities by the various political parties.

By now, the airwaves would have been filled with campaign songs by political parties especially the major ones; the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Huge billboards of various presidential candidates would have been mounted but for COVID-19.

The prevalence of coronavirus in the country has somehow ‘silenced’ the usual ‘pomp and pageantry’ that is associated with an election year.

The new normal is now ‘door to door’ campaign; which the NPP describes as ‘retail campaign’ and social media.

Speaking to this, National Organiser of the NPP, Sammy Awuku said his party is not going to be ‘smart and strategic’.

“Our lives have changed; we need to be smart and strategic to reach the voter. We will not run an extravagant campaign; we will run a campaign that depicts the morals of our sitting President. We will not have a flashy flamboyant campaign like the NDC did in 2016,” he said on ‘Me Man Nti’ programme on Neat FM.

  • NPP doesn’t need EC to win elections, Ghanaians have tested our record – Sammi Awuku

National Organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku says the NPP is not conspiring with the Electoral Commission (EC) and the National Identification Authority (NIA) to rig the 2020 elections.

According to him, there has never occurred a time in the history of Ghana that the NPP has relied on the Electoral Commission to clinch victory in an election and it won’t be in 2020 that the party will need the help of the Commission.

Sammi Awuku, making his submissions on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, further stated that there is no merit in the claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the EC is in collusion with the NPP to skew the outcome of the impending elections in favour of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He explained that the ruling party has been consistent with their call for a new voters’ register and their reason is that the current register have defects that need to be corrected and compiling a new one is the best alternative.

He wondered why the NDC doesn’t raise objections to the EC conducting limited registration exercises to review the register but rather have a problem with compiling a new register.

Mr. Awuku rehashed the words of the 2020 Campaign Manager of the NPP, Peter Mac-Manu, saying ”we don’t need the Electoral Commission to win election 2020”.

To him, the “NPP will go into the 2020 elections on the strength of our record. Ghanaians have tested us and know that we have fulfilled our promise of free SHS. When we said we will have a renewed focus on agriculture because once upon a time, we used to import Kontomire and plantains from Ivory Coast and tomatoes from Burkina but today we will grow more and rather supply our neighbours in these countries . . .So, we won’t go into the 2020 elections counting on the Electoral Commission unless the NDC feels that they relied on the EC during their time. We have never relied on the Electoral Commission since 1992”.

  • Focus on marketing Mahama well, cease needless attack on EC – Sammi Awuku to NDC

New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Organizer, Sammi Awuku has advised the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to cease incessant attacks on the Electoral Commission (EC) and rather concentrate on marketing their 2020 Presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.

Contributing to a panel discussion on the Friday edition of ‘Kokrokoo’ on Peace FM, Sammi Awuku questioned the NDC’s logic in their claim that the EC and the National Identification Authority (NIA) are in cahoots with the governing party to rig this year’s elections.

Giving clues to the NDC on how to prepare for the 2020 elections, Sammi Awuku stated that elections are won at the polling stations and so the opposition party should do their homework well and stop the baseless accusations against the Commission over something they know cannot happen in Ghana.

”In today’s Ghana, it will be a miracle and an accident in history for the Chairperson of the EC and her Commissioners will rig the elections for a political party. It will be difficult . . . What you have to do is that be vigilant at the polling station to know that what is declared there is what you have,” he said.

He added that,”… work hard. Sell your candidate. Market your candidate”, he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi, adding that ”we (NPP) make sure to police the ballot. We make sure that the votes tally with our results and then we ensure that our collation is timely. So, we compare our results with the results that the Electoral Commission announces. NDC, I can confidently tell you they couldn’t collate their results in 2016. In fact, when you take the Kwesi Botchwey report, it’s one of the reasons because they didn’t even know where they won and where they lost, and you can’t blame the EC for your inability to open your eyes,” he said.

  • Coronavirus impact on political campaigns: NPP to switch to ‘retail campaign’ – Sammi Awuku

The year 2020 is an electioneering year and as usual of political parties, the season of elections is when campaigns are launched and large rallies are held, but it appears this year will be an exception; particularly when the public gathering restrictions and health protocols to prevent transmissions of the novel Coronavirus are to be observed.

As the economy is adversely affected by Coronavirus, so are political parties and their candidates for this year’s Parliamentary and Presidential elections feeling the pinch of the pandemic.

According to the National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, the current situation has called for candidates contesting the general elections to adopt new and creative ways to reach out to Ghanaian electorates.

Sammi Awuku noted that the traditional way whereby political parties hold large rallies will be dearly missing this year; however, the candidates need to tap into new avenues to send their campaign messages to the masses.

Speaking on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo” Friday, the NPP National Organizer disclosed that the NPP has adjusted itself to the current situation, therefore the party’s candidates will be embarking on a ”retail campaign” and not the usual ceremonious campaigns.

He explained the retail campaign mechanism is to see the party move from house to house to personally interact with the electorates and ”sell” their candidates to them.

Sammi Awuku shared nostalgic memories of previous years saying he misses the euphoria that accompanies rallies and the gathering of party members and supporters as well as traders who take advantage of the rallies to do business.

”We will miss the excitement that are accompanied with these elections. We miss it. We miss the large gatherings. We will miss that kind of feeling you get when you meet a brother or sister on the grounds…I’m sure, with all the political parties this year, we’ve been forced to readjust to the new normal and also observe these social and health protocols; and aside that, now, every strategist in a room is trying to find new and creative ways that you can still reach out to the masses of our people. We will miss the 2016 kind of campaign.

”It is true that the NPP is not a fan of flamboyant campaigns and our President doesn’t even want a flamboyant campaign but that ‘feel good’ feeling where you meet a large gathering and people would take turns to make speeches will now diminish. Now, the real test of everyone’s strategy will be what the NPP introduced in 2016 that we called the retail campaign. It nearly looked like the NPP could predict or look into the future more that a time will come that, that will be the best way of campaigning. But retail campaigning is difficult than any form of campaign. Retail campaign is identifying the voter or electorate and visiting the electorate at where the person is. You call it door-to-door”, he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.
