Every CEO in the IT sector is publishing a written statement about their organisation. Mark Zuckerberg has just started speaking.
Let’s remember when Senator Lindsey Graham said that social media companies are harming people’s lives and putting democracy in danger.
Graham talks about a young man who was threatened on Instagram and then killed himself.
He then talks to Mark Zuckerberg, who owns Instagram through his company Meta.
Message:Zuckerberg, you and the companies before us – I know you may not realize it, but you are responsible for causing harm. Your product is causing harm and even death, according to Lindsey Graham, a Republican Senator.
Dear Zuckerberg, you and the companies before us- I know you didn’t mean for it to happen, but you are responsible for harm. Your product is causing harm and death to people.
Lindsey Graham is a senator for the Republican party.
Lots of people in the crowd are shouting and clapping.

US Senator Tim Scott withdraws from presidential race
US Republican Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina has withdrawn from the 2024 presidential race.
His campaign aimed to make history by securing the Republican nomination, potentially making him the first African-American nominee from the party.
He told Fox News: “I think the voters, who are the most remarkable people on the planet, have been really clear that they’re telling me: ‘Not now, Tim.’”
Despite being well-funded, Tim Scott’s presidential campaign failed to gain significant traction in opinion polls. He has not thrown his support behind any of the remaining candidates and has explicitly ruled out running for the vice-presidency.
“I’ll be honest with you: I ran for president to be president,” he told Fox host and personal friend Trey Gowdy in the interview on Sunday, saying being vice-president was not on his “to-do list”.
Republican Senator Tim Scott, who entered the presidential race in May, positioned himself as a deeply conservative candidate aiming to bridge political divides in the United States, differentiating himself from former President Donald Trump. His campaign centered on a positive message, vowing to reinvigorate the American ethos of greatness and highlighting his personal narrative as a realization of the American dream.
The 58-year-old, the grandson of a Southern cotton field laborer, spoke of his upbringing by a single mother and the generational rise from cotton fields to Congress within his family.
Despite this optimistic vision, his withdrawal from the presidential campaign followed the third debate in Miami. In these debates, he struggled to stand out among other candidates, failing to resonate with voters. His chances of qualifying for the upcoming Republican debate on December 6 seemed uncertain.
As Mr. Trump maintained a commanding lead over other Republican contenders, he chose not to partake in the televised debates, further altering the dynamics of the Republican race.
The decision to suspend his campaign came unexpectedly for many of Scott’s team members, as reported by the BBC’s US media partner CBS.
Mr. Scott’s departure marks the second high-profile exit from the crowded 2024 US presidential race. Former Vice-President Mike Pence, aged 64, withdrew from the race in late October after encountering difficulties in securing Republican voters’ support.
Mr. Scott’s decision to exit the race comes just two months before the start of the presidential primary season in Iowa. A recent CBS News/YouGov poll indicated that he only had the support of 4% of voters, placing him in fifth place in the Republican race and trailing behind Mr. Trump.
Several major donors who had previously supported Mr. Scott, a US senator since 2013, have now shifted their allegiance to former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, who hails from South Carolina as well.
In a Sunday night post on X, the site formerly known as Twitter, Ms Haley called Mr Scott “a good man of faith and an inspiration to so many”.
“The Republican primary was made better by his participation in it.”

Senator enters not guilty plea as FBI investigates connections to Egypt
US Senator Bob Menendez and his wife said they are innocent of giving or receiving bribes, even as the FBI investigates his connection with Egyptian officials.
The senator from New Jersey is being accused of taking gold bars and lots of money as bribes.
The authorities claim that he used his power to assist the government of Egypt and his business partners in New Jersey.
The senator refused to quit even though other Democrats asked him to.
The Department of Justice accused Mr Menendez and his wife, Nadine, of accepting bribes and engaging in schemes to extort money. They are also accused of conspiring to commit fraud by dishonestly serving their responsibilities.
The FBI and CBS News are investigating possible bad actions between the senator and Egyptian officials, on top of the bribery charges.
Even though Mr. Menendez is no longer the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, his colleagues, including members of his own party, are asking him to quit.
When he was in charge of the committee, he helped manage lots of money that was given to Egypt by the US.
Mr Menendez’s suspected connection to Egypt has caused members of the US Congress to request a review of $235 million in military assistance given to Cairo.
Chris Murphy, a Democratic Senator, who is in charge of the Middle East subcommittee on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, expressed his hope that the committee would use its power to temporarily stop giving money to Egypt until they investigate and find out what Egypt was actually doing.
Mr Menendez, who is 69 years old, was accused of taking bribes in the past. However, the trial for that case was stopped without a final decision in 2017, which means it did not reach a conclusion.
Last year, when investigators searched the senator’s home in New Jersey, they claim to have found $480,000 in cash hidden all over the house. They also say that they discovered 13 gold bars, which they estimate are worth around $155,000.
The federal indictment claims that Mr Menendez and his wife received money for their home loan, a job where they did little or no work, a fancy car, and other valuable items.
The agents found a fancy Mercedes-Benz parked in the couple’s garage, which was paid for by one of the businessmen.
Three business owners were accused in the legal document. On Tuesday, one person named Wael Hana was brought to court and said they didn’t do anything wrong. -

Kenyan senator faces suspension for alleging bullying
A Kenyan female senator who identifies as a whistleblower has been suspended for a period of six months by a parliamentary committee.
Gloria Orwoba was summoned before the Powers and Privileges Committee due to statements she made in Senate WhatsApp groups and during a press briefing.
In these statements, she alleged the existence of a culture in parliament characterized by favoritism, ethnic discrimination, bullying, and sexual harassment. She also suggested that behind-the-scenes, the only way to achieve one’s goals was by offering kickbacks or sexual favors, which she refused to do.
Her messages and complaints to colleagues often included the hashtag #NoSexForWork.
However, the committee concluded that her accusations lacked substantiation, and they mandated that, following her suspension, she would need to issue an apology for her comments before being permitted to resume her duties.
In response to her suspension, Ms. Orwoba, who is currently on a work trip attending the Clinton Global Initiative in New York, expressed her discontent.
She argued that the committee had issued its report despite her having filed a legal case on the matter. She believed that she would not receive a fair hearing and alleged that the committee had rushed to publish its report due to her recent request for the disclosure of senators’ and staff members’ travel expenses from October 2022 to September 2023.
Ms Orwoba said her request had brought about “panic and anxiety in high offices in parliament”.
“Swiftly after this request, the motion to suspend me, which was earlier adjourned was reintroduced while I was away,” she alleged.
This isn’t the first instance of the 37-year-old politician, who is also an advocate for ending period-related stigma, encountering issues with her fellow parliamentarians.
Back in February, she was requested to exit parliament due to her non-compliance with the house’s dress code, owing to an apparent period blood stain on her white trouser suit. During that incident, she brushed off criticism from those who accused her of being disrespectful, asserting that accidents can occur.
“Since I am always advocating against period shame, I thought I should go ahead and walk the talk.”

Nigerian senate rejects motion to free separatist leader
Head of the secessionist Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob), Nnamdi Kanu, had a resolution for his release rejected by the Nigerian senate by senators from the south-east area.
The motion’s sponsor, Senator Osita Izunaso of Imo West, said that releasing Mr. Kanu would put an end to the local gunmen’s sit-at-home instructions.
“When people are forced to stay at home and businesses remain closed, productivity declines and income is reduced, affecting livelihoods and economic growth,” he said.
Nevertheless, the Senate turned down the appeals from the south-east lawmaker and instead urged the federal government to arrest those responsible for enforcing the sit-at-home orders.
Since August 2021, unknown gunmen have been enforcing the weekly sit-at-home directives every Monday, despite Ipob’s disassociation from their actions.
Mr. Kanu has been in detention since June 2021, even after the court dismissed all terror charges against him in October 2022.

Actress Regina Daniels’ husband, Ned Nwoko has disclosed that his national responsibilities prevented him from participating in the ill-fated Titan submersible adventure.
Nwoko, a Senator representing Delta North in the country’s South South zone, is known to be friends with one of the deceased persons aboard the submersible, Captain Hermish Harding.
He posted on his social media handles on June 23 that he had lost a friend and business partner, detailing a number of past adventures that they had undertaken.
On the issue of the widely-reported upon submersible and the invitation extended to him by Harding, he wrote: “he also invited me on his space shuttle last year and this very Titan ill-fated adventure but I was tied down with national duties.”
Meanwhile, Nigerians on social media have been mocking the account of Nwoko with some asking what national assignment in particular had obstructed him.

I have lost a very dear friend and business partner. Captain hermish Harding. We both went on a very dangerous expedition to the Southpole Antarctica few years back.
He was a gulf stream pilot who flew across the world in a record breaking expedition by Guinness world record for circumnavigation of the earth some years ago.
He descended into the Mariana. he also invited me on his space shuttle last year and this very Titan ill-fated adventure but I was tied down with national duties.
Above all he was a partner on the various researches into eradication of malaria in Africa project. He was very enthusiastic about it and always gave his support at every given opportunity.
His last message to me was this last Sunday when he told me they were ready to dive to the titanic if the weather permits. He loved adventure and challenges. My heart bleeds for his dear wife and kids who have become family friends over the years. We will surely miss his wealth of experience.
Reuters report about the accident
A deep-sea submersible carrying five people on a voyage to the century-old wreck of the Titanic was found in pieces from a “catastrophic implosion” that killed everyone aboard, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Thursday, ending a multinational five-day search for the vessel.
A robotic diving vehicle deployed from a Canadian ship discovered a debris field from the submersible Titan on Thursday morning on the seabed some 1,600 feet (488 meters) from the bow of the Titanic, 2 1/2 miles (4 km) beneath the surface, in a remote corner of the North Atlantic, U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger told reporters.
The Titan, operated by the U.S.-based company OceanGate Expeditions, had been missing since it lost contact with its surface support ship on Sunday morning about an hour, 45 minutes into what should have been a two-hour dive to the world’s most famous shipwreck.
“The debris field here is consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vehicle,” Mauger said.
Even before the Coast Guard’s press conference, OceanGate issued a statement saying there were no survivors among the five men aboard the Titan, including the company’s founder and chief executive officer, Stockton Rush, who was piloting the Titan.
The four others were British billionaire and explorer Hamish Harding, 58; Pakistani-born businessman Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his 19-year-old son, Suleman, both British citizens; and French oceanographer and renowned Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, who had visited the wreck dozens of times.

Governor Ayade had risen to power as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. He was elected into the Senate in 2011 as a candidate of the party in 2011 and as Governor in 2015. He was also re-elected governor as a PDP member.
The governor, however, defected to the All Progressives Congress in 2021. Agom-Jarigbe, however, chose to remain the PDP.

Kenyan parliament sacks Senator over ‘period stain’
Kenyan parliament has sacked a senator after attending a session while wearing a white suit stained red in an apparent menstrual activism campaign.
Gloria Orwoba, of the ruling coalition, is due to table a motion on a bill to provide free sanitary pads on Wednesday as part of efforts to end period poverty.
According to reports, senators disrupted Tuesday’s afternoon session to draw the Speaker’s attention to Ms Orwoba’s “inappropriate dress code”.
But the senator protested saying: “I am shocked that someone can stand here and say that the House has been disgraced because a woman has had her periods.”
@Senator @gloria_orwoba , If we can have free toilet paper , Condoms Despenser in almost every toilet in the Kenya., we can also have free menstrual pads for all women.#FreeThePeriod

Pads Then Condoms pic.twitter.com/FRYjEkkd7ASpeaker Amason Kingi ordered the senator to go change her clothes before she could be readmitted to the chambers.
“Having periods is never a crime… Senator Gloria, I sympathise with you that you are going through the natural act of menstruation, you have stained your wonderful suit, I’m asking you to leave so that you go change and come back with clothes that are not stained,” the BBC quoted speaker in a report
Outside the chambers, Senator Orwoba confirmed the report to journalists saying “unfortunately I have been kicked out because I’m on my period and we are not supposed to show our period when we are on our period and that is the kind of period stigma girls and women are having outside…”

Davido’s uncle allegedly sacked after two months of being sworn in as Osun State governor
The Election Petition Tribunal has reportedly declared APC’s Adegboyega Oyetola as the winner of the Osun State governorship election which was held on Saturday, July 16, 2022.
The tribunal made the declaration as it annulled the victory of the PDP’s Ademola Adeleke on Friday, January 27, 2023.
