Simon Harris to eventually become leader of Fine Gael

Simon Harris will most likely be the new leader of Fine Gael as closing date for nominations end soon. Nominations were supposed to end on Monday, but they ended a day early.

He will take over as the party leader and the prime minister of Ireland, after Leo Varadkar announced he was stepping down.

Mr. Harris has been in charge of the Irish educational system for years and believes he qualifies for the position.

A message was sent to Fine Gael politicians saying that the party leader would be announced after the party’s convention in Athlone on Sunday. If there is only one person nominated, the returning officer will make sure that person becomes the party leader.

Mr Harris is likely to get the top job because other ministers who could have competed with him have decided not to run. Many people supported the 37-year-old before nominations started, so he was the early favorite.

Ministers Helen McEntee, Paschal Donohoe and Heather Humphreys were some of the people who supported Mr.

On Friday, Mr Harris said he felt very grateful and happy for the support he got recently.

Why are people competing to be the leader.

On Wednesday, Mr Varadkar surprised people when he said he would immediately stop being the leader of Fine Gael, and would leave his role as taoiseach as soon as the next leader is chosen.

He said he was quitting because of personal and political reasons and felt like he wasn’t the right person for the job anymore.

He said there were no secret plans or hidden reasons for the decision, and he also said there were no new job offers.

Mr Varadkar stepping down from his job started a competition to choose a new leader for his political party. The person who wins this competition will also become the new leader of the government in Dublin.

Who is Simon Harris. What is Simon Harris like.

Mr Harris, who is 37 years old, is going to be the youngest taoiseach in Ireland’s history. He will be taking over the top leadership position at 37, which is one year younger than the previous leader did in 2017.

He started working in the Irish parliament over ten years ago when he was 24 years old, representing Wicklow. Mr Harris quickly moved up in the party and became a health minister in 2016, after just five years.

In this job, he was in charge of the vote to allow abortion in Ireland and the scandal involving cervical cancer screening in the country.

He was in charge of dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic at the beginning, but he was replaced when the new government came in 2020.

He has been a minister for more education, research, innovation, and science. He also briefly worked as the minister for justice.

Fine Gael Senator Emer Currie, who speaks for the party in Northern Ireland, said that Mr Harris is a new type of nationalist politician who is not afraid to show their nationalist goals. She said to the media that she thinks he will also be very respectful of politics focused on making peace.

“He is very caring and understanding towards others, especially the victims of the north. I find that very inspiring. ”

“He will be someone who closely follows the new relationships after Brexit and has a strong understanding and respect for the Good Friday Agreement. ”

Senator Currie also said the new party leader is very interested in issues that affect both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. They want to give Northern Irish students more chances to study in the Republic of Ireland.

Simon Harris is likely to become the new leader of Fine Gael and the taoiseach because all the other top contenders have left the race.

The day after Leo Varadkar surprised everyone by saying he was quitting as Fine Gael leader, he also said he would step down as Taoiseach once a new leader is chosen.

Heather Humphreys and Jennifer Carroll MacNeill said they don’t want the job, so now Mr. Harris can have it.

Helen McEntee, who is the justice minister, said she is not going to run for a leadership position. Instead, Fine Gael politicians are starting to support Mr. Harris, who is the minister for further and higher education.

One of those was Ms McEntee herself, who said Mr Harris is a great co-worker and good at talking to people.

She said on X that she knows he will bring a lot of energy to this important job.

Mr Harris is likely going to say he wants to be the leader on Thursday.

If Harris replaces Mr. Varadkar, he would become the youngest ever leader of the country at 37 years old, taking the title from his predecessor.

Patrick O’Donovan, a minister for Fine Gael, is supporting Mr.

He said, “I believe Fine Gael has plenty of time and opportunity to rebuild and focus on important issues before the next election. I think Simon is the best person to lead that effort. ”

Both Fine Gael and their biggest partner, Fianna Fail, are behind the main opposition Sinn Fein party in the polls.

The person who becomes the leader will have a year to try to improve their chances of winning the next election, even if they are currently behind in the polls.

Other people who support Mr. Harris include Fine Gael politicians Neale Richmond and Frank Feighan, as well as senators Tim Lombard and Michael Carrigy, and MEPs Frances Fitzgerald and Maria Walsh.

Simon Coveney, the Minister for Enterprise who competed against Mr Varadkar in the last Fine Gael leadership contest, said on Wednesday that he will not be running for leadership.

Many bookmakers liked Mr Harris and many politicians supported him before nominations started.

Mr Harris became a member of parliament when he was 24 years old. He had been elected as a local councillor in his home county of Wicklow two years earlier, in 2009.

His popularity grew a lot when he was the health minister during the COVID-19 pandemic. Before that, he worked as a lower-ranking minister in the finance department from 2014 to 2016.
