  • Ghana joins forces with Burkina Faso to locate suspected terrorists in Sissala West

A joint security operation involving law enforcement agencies from Ghana and Burkina Faso has been launched to locate individuals suspected to be terrorists hiding in Fatchu within the Sissala West District.

According to information obtained from the Sissala West District Police Command, it is believed that these suspected terrorists may have crossed the border from Burkina Faso into Ghana on Wednesday, September 27, around 11:45 in the morning.

During a raid on the hideout of these suspects, several items were discovered, including a Ghanaian voter ID card, two mobile phones, an unspecified quantity of ammunition, clothing, and eight bicycles, among other items.

A search of the recovered mobile phones revealed images of individuals dressed in terrorist attire. One of these individuals, approximately 40 years old, bears a striking resemblance to a wanted terrorist in Burkina Faso.

The suspected terrorist was identified as Diallo Noufou by Burkina Faso security agencies, and he possessed a Ghanaian voter ID card bearing the name Abdulai Ibrahim.

The security services in Gwollu have been alerted to this development and are currently conducting periodic patrols in and around Fatchu.

  • No projects to account for yet Ghana’s debt is close to GHS600bn – Mahama slams NPP

No projects to account for yet Ghana’s debt is close to GHS600bn – Mahama slams NPP

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has slammed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for borrowing excessively.

Mr Mahama said when he was leaving office in 2016, the debt of Ghana was GHS120 billion with projects to show for it.

However, he said, at the moment, the debt is almost GHS600 billion with no projects to show.

Interacting with delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Sissala West as part of his campaign to be elected flagbearer of the party, on Tuesday, May 9, Mr Mahama said ” When we were leaving office the debt was GHS120billion. Today, it is almost GHS 600 billion but with no infrastructure projects to show for.

“At least we should have clean drinking water, a hospital built, and infrastructure but unfortunately, that is not the case.”

He further said Ghanaians are calling for the NDC to return to office.

“Ghanaians are asking the NDC to come back because they have realized that what they were told about the NDC, they were all lies,” Mr Mahama said.

  • NADMO appeals for shelter and food for Burkinabe migrants

The Sissala West District Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has appealed for temporary shelter and food for the migrants currently in some communities within the district.

Mr Yahaya Alidu said it would help prevent the refugees from mingling with the communities for easier identification and to prevent possible transmission of diseases they might have carried into the country.

Mr Alidu said this when the Sissala West District Assembly distributed assorted items including bags of maize, mats, and money to enable them to fend for themselves and their children.

He also appealed for support in any form such as tents, food, and clothes to help them keep the migrants from staying with the locals for easier access and monitoring.

Presenting the items to the migrants in Wiiro, Nemoro, and Fielmuoh, Madam Ayisha Batong Hor, the District Chief Executive (DCE), said it was to help them with their upkeep while in Ghana.

In an engagement with the Chiefs and Elders of the communities after the presentation, the DCE reminded the community members of the “See Something, Say Something” slogan geared towards raising public awareness of the indicators of terrorism.

Madam Hor also encouraged the people to call the toll-free line 999 to report suspicious characters, activities, or behaviour of people to security for swift intervention.

She hinted at the Assembly’s intention of working with the relevant state agencies for the creation of a refugee camp, where possible.

The DCE said, “I expect you (the migrants) to conduct yourselves well within the country’s laws and do what is acceptable in Ghana to make your stay in Ghana comfortable.”

The Chiefs of the affected communities expressed gratitude for the gesture and the prompt response as the donations would go a long way to augment their efforts.

The donation was part of efforts of the Assembly to offer some relief to the refugees, who fled Burkina Faso a week ago to some parts of the Sissala West District for fear of terrorist attack.

  • Security beefed up following Burkinabe refugees in Sissala West – DCE

The Sissala West District Chief Executive (DCE), Mrs. Ayisha Baton Hor has assured locals that there is no cause for alarm regarding security.

About 800 Burkinabes are seeking refuge in seven communities in the Sissala West district of the Upper West region.

The development comes after unknown persons attacked their community in neighboring Burkina Faso.

Speaking to Starr Today with Joshua Kodjo Mensah Wednesday, the District Chief Executive who confirmed the presence of the Burkinabes in her area indicated security personnel have been deployed to the enclave to augment the district security.

According to her, the Burkinabes seeking refuge in the District are living in fear and are unwilling to return back home anytime soon.

Narrating her interaction with them, the DCE said one told her “they (the assailants) told us they will be coming back and we don’t know when they will come.”

Madam Baton Hor disclosed that before she will get to the place with the security team the residents have already given them places to stay.

“We have isolated places where they are living and we have actually given them three places for them to live, women and children. These are temporary places given out by the community. So now as DISEC we had a meeting and moved in to see the situation for ourselves,” the Chief Executive stated.

The DCE added that in such a situation what they will need is food and shelter while security measures are also put in place.

  • Sissala areas to benefit from 35 million Dollar EU roads project

Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, the Upper West Regional Minister has assured the Sissala East Municipality, Sissala West and Wa East Districts that they will benefit from the 35 million Dollar European Union (EU) funded road project in the region.

He said the funding agencies had agreed for the contract to be modified to include some feeder roads in the Sissala areas.

The Minister said this when a five-member delegation including chiefs from the Sissala areas called on him on Wednesday on the outcome of a meeting they held with the Ministers of Road and Highways and Agriculture on the exclusion of the area from the EU/World Bank feeder road project.

The delegation included Zini Kuoro, Pulima Kuoro, President and the Secretary of the Sissala Youth Forum and the Executive Director of Community Development Alliance.

Dr. Bin Salih indicated that a team of technocrats was in the region on the order of the Minister of Roads to assess the roads in the Sissala areas.

The Chiefs and people of the Sissala areas petitioned the President for excluding the area from the EU/WB roads project.

Dr. Bin Salih commended them for adopting a peaceful process to present their grievances saying, “Others would have resorted to violence, and violence does not yield any positive result”.

The Minister said the outcome of the meeting would exonerate him from the allegations that he was involved in the selection of the road and awarding of the contracts.

“… so when this happened, it then dawns on people that I did not play any role in either the selection of the roads or the award of the contracts”, he explained.

The Minister indicated that under his leadership as Regional Minister, no district would be discriminated against in terms of development for the benefit of the people and for his personal development.

Talking on smuggling of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) fertilizer, Dr. Bin Salih said the act tended to soil the hard-won reputation of the region.

He said government was investing billions of Ghana Cedis to subsidise the fertilizers for farmers and yet some miscreants were bent on cashing-in on the intervention.

“We need the support of each one of you to be able to reduce this menace to the barest minimum.

“We have increased the number of security personnel along the border, but it is not everywhere that the security persons can be, and indeed some of them are complicit, they connive with these smugglers to do that”, he said.

The team commended the Regional Minister and the Members of Parliament for the area for their intervention to ensure that the Sissala area was not left out in the project.

They also requested the Minister of Roads and Highways to facilitate the construction of the Wa-Tumu-Bolgatanga road to help facilitate economic activities between the two regions.
