    Recent military brutality in Bawku unacceptable – Mahama Ayariga

    Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has criticised the recent conduct by military personnel against civilians in the area on Sunday, July 13.

    In a press statement issued on Monday, July 14, the Bawku Central MP described the incident as unacceptable and called for an immediate probe.

    “I condemn, in no uncertain terms, the unacceptable act of destruction of the statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, by some military personnel,” Mr Ayariga stated.

    Military personnel in Bawku reportedly destroyed a culturally significant statue in the area following a confrontation between civilians, leading to the death of several others.

    Mr Ayariga also criticised the violent attack by unknown assailants on a vehicle that contained soldiers.

    “The violent gun attack by unknown youth on the vehicle escorted by soldiers is equally condemned, and further attacks must cease,” he noted.

    Meanwhile, the Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has reinforced the government’s commitment to restoring peace and stability in Bawku.

    “We are, once again, urging restraint and calm in Bawku regarding the latest developments as of yesterday,” he stated.

    According to him, the government is working with security to contain the situation and protect lives and property.

    “I have directed thorough investigations into the recent matter and promised to take swift action based on recommendations,” he said.

    Bawku, which had remained relatively peaceful for a period, saw conflict erupt once more in late 2024. The resurgence of violence was largely sparked by the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a Mamprusi chief who had been enskinned in 2022, only to be exiled later when his enskinment was ruled illegal.

    His return to Bawku followed the withdrawal of an arrest warrant against him by a Kumasi High Court in October 2024, reigniting tensions between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities.

    The renewed violence has resulted in deadly confrontations, including attacks on both civilians and security forces.

    On April 15, Otumfuo formally announced that the critical mediation sessions would take place from April 28 to May 1 at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

    However, it was postponed due to the complexity of the dispute in the locality.

    Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s involvement in the peace process has been met with widespread approval, with many hopeful that his leadership will play a critical role in restoring peace and stability to the troubled Bawku region.

    Colonel Festus Aboagye (Retired), a distinguished security expert, has called for greater support for Otumfuo’s initiative, stressing the importance of embracing multi-track diplomacy to strengthen the peace process.

    Colonel Aboagye urged a more inclusive approach to the mediation, calling for the involvement of various national stakeholders such as diaspora leaders, youth advocates, and women’s peacebuilding networks.

    He believes that a broader, multi-dimensional strategy will result in a more sustainable and inclusive solution to the conflict.

    “Support Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s mediation through multi-track diplomacy, incorporating diaspora leaders, youth influencers, and women’s peacebuilding networks,” he proposed.

    He also cautioned that traditional diplomatic efforts alone might not be enough to resolve the deep divisions that have fueled the protracted conflict.

    Enyonam revealed that while her husband was away on a peacekeeping mission for over a year, she struggled to control her sexual desires and began an affair with another officer who lived in the barracks.

    Seeking solace on Prophet Prince Elisha Osei Kofi’s confession show, she explained that after her husband’s return, she was too fearful to perform her marital duties, as her infidelity conflicted with a vow tied to their marriage.

    In Ewe tradition, a wife who engages in extramarital affairs can cause harm to her husband if she cooks for him or engages in sexual relations. This could lead to sickness or even insanity.

    According to Enyonam, her actions tragically resulted in her husband’s death and that of his colleague.

    “I came here because I sinned against my husband, a soldier. He travelled for one year on a peacekeeping mission, and I slept with someone else who was also a soldier in the barracks.

    So, when he came back, I was afraid to tell him because I am an Ewe, and before we marry, they give us a stool to sit on as a vow to remain faithful to our husbands,” she said.

    Gripped with fear of losing her husband, she resorted to her sister cooking for her husband while he was at work. Upon his return, he ate the food without knowing who prepared it, and she also refused sexual encounters with him.

    “I wanted to tell him and plead, but I couldn’t, so I kept quiet. And because of that, I couldn’t cook for him or have sex with him because if I did, he would go mad or fall sick. So, I resorted to one of my sisters to cook for him,” she narrated.

    Enyonam further shared that after mustering the courage to confide in a friend about her infidelity and the potential consequences tied to the vow, her friend dismissed the traditional belief. The friend argued that it was nothing more than a superstition designed to discourage infidelity, and there was no real danger.

    Reassured by this, Enyonam resumed her normal duties as a wife, including engaging in sexual relations with her husband. Tragically, soon after, her husband fell ill. Despite numerous attempts to save him, moving from one hospital to another, he eventually passed away.

    “I told one of my friends about the situation and, per our culture, the consequence, but she said it is an African belief, so I shouldn’t be African, and I went ahead to perform my marital duties.

    “He later fell sick, and we went to most hospitals, but he couldn’t survive and died.”

    After her husband’s funeral, Enyonam rekindled her affair with the soldier she had been involved with during her husband’s absence. However, shortly after, the soldier also fell ill and eventually passed away.

    Now, consumed with fear and experiencing similar symptoms to those that claimed the lives of her husband and the other officer, Enyonam has sought out the pastor, seeking refuge and confessing her actions in hopes of finding relief.

    “After his funeral, I continued my affair with the soldier. I dreamt one day and saw my husband playing football with him, and my boyfriend booted my husband in the dream and got a red card.

    “Later, he also fell sick and died. Now I am also sick, and I’m scared. I don’t know if my boyfriend’s wife is behind my illness or if it is a result of my actions because she once warned me about her husband,” she added.

    A man identified as Issah Kudus has publicly appealed for help, claiming that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) are refusing to grant his discharge request.

    Kudus, who states he is a soldier in the second battalion of infantry, says he wants to leave the military due to personal reasons but alleges that his attempts to retire have been met with resistance.

    However, it has not been confirmed if Kudus is indeed a soldier.

    In a video circulating online, Kudus shared his plight, revealing that he had gone through all the official procedures to request a compassionate release from the GAF.

    He submitted his resignation letter in March 2024 and underwent interviews with both his Officer Commanding (OC) and Commanding Officer (CO), where he explained his reasons for wanting to leave the military.

    “I am a soldier of the second battalion of infantry. I have requested to be released from the Ghana Armed Forces and end my career as a soldier. On March 2024, I submitted a letter to the Ghana Armed Forces administratively requesting for a compassionate release,” Kudus stated. “I went through my OC’s interview and my CO’s interview and insisted I wanted to be released from the service based on personal reasons.”

    Kudus emphasized that his decision is driven by personal circumstances, which have left him unable to continue his military career.

    “I gave reasons explaining why I cannot be in the military again. I am the only person who knows what is around me and I don’t have the mental capacity to endure anything in the military.”

    Despite following all necessary protocols and making his case clear, Kudus feels that the army is intentionally obstructing his efforts to leave.

    Kudus’s plea has sparked conversations on social media, with many calling for the GAF to address his concerns and ensure that soldiers are treated with empathy and respect when they seek to leave the service.

    The Nkwanta South Municipal Police Command has apprehended Abdul Majeed, a 27-year-old man, for impersonating a military officer in the area.

    Upon reaching his destination, the fake military officer refused to settle the fare, using his fabricated identity to intimidate the rider. This led to a physical altercation between them.

    Following an interrogation by military personnel in the area, it was discovered that the suspect had no affiliation with the Ghana Armed Forces but had been using his deceptive identity to command respect and exert authority in the community.

    As a consequence, the suspect was subjected to military drills as punishment for deceiving the public. He has since been handed over to the Police for further investigation and prosecution. Abdul Majeed is currently facing charges of impersonation and fraud.

    The UN mission is currently in the process of verifying the extent of the impact, including the number of casualties, injuries, and displaced individuals.

    Frequent clashes between various communities are common in South Sudan, stemming from the aftermath of a devastating war involving the country’s leader, Salva Kiir, and his former deputy, Riek Machar, in a conflict between rival tribes. The statement, however, did not specify which tribes were involved in Saturday’s clashes.

    The Abyei region, known for its oil resources, grapples with recurring episodes of violence, primarily due to a dispute over the administrative boundary among rival factions of the Dinka ethnic group. The ownership of Abyei itself is contested between Sudan and South Sudan, with the latter declaring independence from Sudan in 2011.

    The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has dismissed allegations of being involved in the recent fatalities of three individuals in Sabongari, Bawku.

    This comes in response to the killing of Issah Halidu, a 40-year-old Mamprusi man, on January 12th, which triggered a surge in violence in the region.

    While recognizing the escalating tensions and tragic loss of life, the GAF unequivocally denies any connection to the subsequent deaths.

    In their statement, they underscore that the perpetrators responsible for the recent assault were never under their custody at any point.

    According to the GAF’s account, the violence commenced on January 12 with the murder of Issah Halidu. On January 17, unidentified gunmen launched an attack on civilians, resulting in two deaths and four injuries.

    Furthermore, on January 18, the GAF reported firing at a Ghanaian Army post and observing two locals attempting to ignite a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) bomb at a Goil Filling Station in Bawku.

    While expressing regret over the fatalities, the GAF cautions against direct confrontation with military personnel.

    The statement emphasizes, “It is instructive to note that directly engaging the military is a development that could result in fatal consequences; as troops will spare no opportunity to defend themselves as well as protect residents of Bawku. Therefore, factions in the Bawku conflict are cautioned against drawing the military into direct armed confrontation while efforts are undertaken to resolve the current impasse.”

    A soldier from the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), who was under investigation for alleged fraud, has been discovered deceased.

    The lifeless body of the soldier, identified as a Lance Corporal, was found in the unit’s guardroom at 5:30 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2023.

    A press statement, signed by Brigadier General Eric Aggrey Quashie, Director General of the Public Affairs Directorate, confirmed that the deceased soldier’s body had been transported to the 37 Military Hospital Mortuary.

    The statement indicated that initial inquiries revealed that the soldier, who was the subject of several fraud cases, had been placed in closed custody on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at around 7:30 pm, following a report of fraud by a civilian staff member at his Regiment.

    It further stated that a team comprising members of the Ghana Military Police and CID personnel from the Teshie Divisional Police Headquarters had been dispatched to the scene to conduct investigations.

    “A team from the Ghana Military Police and a CID personnel from Teshie Divisional Police Headquarters were dispatched to the scene for investigations.”

    The GAF mentioned that the deceased soldier’s body had been transported to the 37 Military Hospital mortuary.

    “GAF takes this opportunity to extend its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, friends, and loved ones of the deceased soldier,” they added.

    Gunner Beck’s mom, Leighann McCready, says: “You might think it’s easiest to stop communication with him, but you can’t simply cut off contact with your boss. ”

    Ms McCready, Jaysley’s dad, Anthony, and her older sister Emilli, were always talking to her and could see how her boss’s unwanted attention affected her.

    “Ms McCready said that she was always sad. ” She was tired and annoyed by how he was acting. It began to mess up a job that she really liked doing.

She called her friend who was working overnight and asked them to stay on the phone with her until she fell asleep. She wanted them to listen and call for help if they heard anything concerning.

    Gunner Beck chose not to tell people about what happened to her, but someone else did.

    The report states that actions were taken to address this type of behavior. These actions were included in a new set of rules for the military in November 2022.

    She says that the military people were not understanding and caring when the family wanted to be in her room while taking her things. She says they tried but couldn’t control how her funeral should be planned.

    She holds her daughter’s Army hat and pants and says, “These make me feel safe and calm. ” I have these things and they remind me of good times, but it wasn’t fair for me to only have these things. I wish my daughter had come back home.

    A spokesperson for the Army said, “We are thinking of and feeling sorry for Gunner Jaysley-Louise Beck’s family and friends during this hard time. ” They also mentioned that it would not be right to say anything more until after the inquest.

    The person from Manitoba who started a company called NextGen Drainage Solutions in 2011, who was 38 years old, passed away two days after the accident.

    Gibson, who is said to be from Dalry in Ayrshire, was supposed to go to the Toronto Regional Bail Centre at 10am on Monday.

    The decision from the hearing has not been shared with the public.

    According to an article in the Mail Online, Gibson is a soldier in a military unit called The Highlanders, which is part of the 4th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

    According to comments from military sources, the news website said that he is accused of hitting Mr Sheffield in the jaw only one time.

    The tragic incident occurred at the Base Ammunition Depot near Michel Camp in Accra.

    According to the GAF’s account of the incident, Private Roger, who was part of the platoon stationed at the Southern Command, was diligently carrying out his duties on the morning of Saturday, August 19th, when the unfortunate event transpired.

    “Preliminary investigative report indicates that the soldier was seen sitting on his bed, waiting to believe his colleague at a duty post at 8 am when his rifle went off hitting him under his chin; killing him instantly,” a statement from GAF read.

    The Armed Forces has indicated that a team from the Homicide Unit of the Gbetsele Police Station is collaborating with the Military Police to investigate the incident.

    “GAF takes this opportunity to express its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, friends and loved ones of the deceased soldier,” the statement added.

    In the interim, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital mortuary.

    On Thursday July 27, the army of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) declared that it successfully repelled an incursion by the Rwandan army into the eastern province of North Kivu.

    In a press release issued by General Sylvain Ekenge, the spokesperson for the FARDC (Forces armĂŠes de RDC) general staff, they asserted their intention to “exercise the right of pursuit.”

    The press release did not confirm the reported information from local Congolese sources about a Rwandan soldier being killed in the clash.

    According to General Ekenge’s statement, the Rwandan Defence Forces crossed the border north of Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu, on Thursday morning. Their stated purpose was to send reinforcements and continue destabilizing and intentionally violating the territorial integrity of the DRC.

    However, the FARDC units responsible for border security effectively repelled the Rwandan soldiers, forcing them to withdraw back to their own country. The press release emphasized that the FARDC would respond vigorously and exercise the right of hot pursuit.

    Additional military sources, who preferred to remain anonymous, revealed that one Rwandan soldier was killed during the exchange of fire, according to interviews conducted in the Goma region.

    By Thursday evening, there had been no response from the Rwandan army or government when contacted by AFP.

    “Isaac Amejor, in full police apparel, would get down from the taxi and inform their victim that he or she was under arrest. Michael Baffour, also dressed in an army uniform, would join Isaac to effect the arrest of the victim and force all the persons in the hired taxi cab to create the impression that they were, indeed, employees of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Army.

    “They would then order the driver to move and follow their direction… the accused persons robbed several people of the monies in their possession, and pushed them out of the car along the way,” the The Chronicle report said.

    The three men have since been remanded into lawful custody for allegedly accosting and robbing customers of financial institutions, particularly those who had gone to withdraw huge monies.

    Ngala, after quitting the military job, relocated with his family to live on a piece of land that pastor Mackenzie donated to them.

    During the fasting, as people were dying out of hunger, Emily’s father-in-law reportedly managed to escape from the forest on March 15 to disclose the happenings, compelling their family members to storm the forest to rescue them.

    However, they only managed to rescue the couple’s eight-year-old son, who was on the brink of death after going for days without food, tuko.co.ke reports.

    The unhappy family members returned home and reported the matter to the police, which triggered the ongoing intervention by the authorities and the exhumation of over 90 bodies from mass and single graves scattered across a large land belonging to the pastor.

    According to a statement from Fort Hood, 20-year-old combat engineer Basaldua Ruiz of the 1st Cavalry Division passed away on Monday.

    The Army Criminal Investigation Division and the chain of command are actively looking into the details and circumstances surrounding her death, according to the statement, which was made public on Wednesday.

    Basaldua Ruiz’s mother, Alejandra Ruiz Zarco, was told by Army officials that Basaldua Ruiz died by suicide, the mother told CNN affiliate Univision and Telemundo News.

    Ruiz Zarco told both outlets she questions the claim and says her daughter was being sexually harassed at the base.

    The Army would not confirm Basaldua Ruiz’s cause of death to CNN but said in a statement that “any possible harassment will be addressed and investigated fully.”

    “Army CID will continue to conduct a thorough investigation and gather all evidence and facts to ensure they discover exactly what transpired,” the statement said.

    In a news conference Friday evening, Fort Hood commander Lt. Gen. Sean Bernabe said the criminal investigation division – which is independent of Fort Hood’s chain of command – is “not ruling anything out and will investigate the circumstances leading up to Ana’s death fully and completely.”

    The allegations of harassment are being investigated, Bernabe said, adding “we do not tolerate harassment of any type.”

    Basaldua Ruiz’s family members will soon be visiting the base, and Bernabe said the army remains “committed to maintaining open lines of communication” with the family and are prepared to “receive them and to support them” during the visit.

    The League of United Latin American Citizens, the largest Hispanic civil rights organization in the US, called for an independent FBI investigation into Basaldua Ruiz’s death.

    The organization wants the probe to be conducted outside the Army structure and for the evidence to be identified, assessed and evaluated independently, said league spokesperson David Cruz.

    Basaldua Ruiz’s death comes three years after the murder of Fort Hood Army Spc. Vanessa Guillén, who disappeared in April 2020 and was later found dead in a shallow grave. Her family said Guillén was being sexually harassed and planned to file a complaint; she was killed the day before she would have filed it. The suspect, a fellow Fort Hood soldier, killed himself after being confronted by police, officials said. Guillén’s family said the man became enraged when he found out she planned to file a sexual harassment report and killed her.

    An investigation in the wake of Guillén’s death led to the punishment of 14 senior officers and raised concerns about the culture at the base.

    The Fort Hood Independent Review Committee found “a deficient climate” there, including “ineffective implementation of the Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) program that resulted in a pervasive lack of confidence, fear of retaliation, and significant underreporting of cases, particularly within the enlisted ranks,” the Pentagon said in 2020.

    Basaldua Ruiz was from Long Beach, California, and entered the Army in 2021, officials said. She had been assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division for 15 months.

    “A loss of any one of our Soldiers is a tragedy,” said Col. Christopher Dempsey, commander, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. “Our hearts and thoughts go out to the family, friends and colleagues of Ana.”

    Police share detailed account of how soldier was killed at Ashaiman

    The Ghana Police Service has provided details on the circumstances surrounding the death of young trooper Imoro Sherrif on March 4 and the results of their initial investigations, which included the arrest of six suspects who will appear in court on Monday. Read the full police report below.

    The Police after a week of sustained intelligence-led operations, have arrested six persons at different dates and various locations within Ashiaman and its environs for their suspected involvement in the murder of Imoro Sherrif, a soldier.

    On March 4, Police received information that a male adult had been found lying dead at Ashiaman Taifa in the Greater Accra Region.

    A team of Police officers proceeded to the said location and confirmed the incident.

    Police immediately commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the victim. The officers cordoned off the scene and called in the specialist Police Crime Scene team to process the scene for forensic analysis.

    The Crime Scene Team retrieved a number of items, including a knife with blood stains on it and a backpack. In the backpack, Police found a Samsung tablet, an Apple laptop, a military uniform with the name tag “Imoro”, eight other items of clothing, as well as a Ghana card and a Health Insurance card bearing the name Imoro Sherrif.

    Judging from the contents of the backpack, the police suspected the victim could be a soldier, and in line with Police standard operating procedure for handling institution-based victims, the Military was accordingly notified of the incident and some military personnel came to identify the deceased to Police as Imoro Sheriff, a soldier.

    The body of the deceased was thereafter conveyed to a hospital for preservation and autopsy.

    As part of the investigation, an intelligence-led operation was immediately launched within Ashiaman and other strategic locations of interest to follow up on all relevant leads on the case.

    On the same day, consistent with Ghanaian tradition and as part of the investigation process, a team of police officers after identifying the residence of the parents of the deceased, visited them, commiserated with them and assured them of a thorough investigation into the matter.

    During the visit, the parents informed the Police that the deceased was stationed at Sunyani but had come to Accra on a course.

    Investigations further revealed that on March 3, the deceased had visited a female friend at Ashaiman Newtown at about 10:30 pm and left the place in the middle of the night at about 01:30 am, on March 4.

    After almost a week of painstaking intelligence-led operations, on March 9, the police arrested suspects Safianu Musah alias Dayorgu and Ibrahim Abdul Rakib at their hideouts in Ashaiman.

    Two other suspects, Samuel Tetteh alias Wiper and Abubakar Sadick alias Birdman were also arrested at their hideouts on March 10.

    Two additional suspects, Yussif Mohammed and Abdul Gafaru Abdul Karim were arrested on 11th and March 12, respectively.

    Further investigation has established that suspects Samuel Tetteh and Abubakar Sadick at about 1:45 am on 4th March 2023 attacked the deceased at Taifa Ashiaman in an attempt to rob him of his phone and a backpack.

    The deceased, however, resisted and struggled with the suspects. During the struggle, suspect Samuel Tetteh pulled out a knife and stabbed the deceased in the arm, snatched his phone and bolted leaving the deceased with the knife stuck in his arm.

    A postmortem examination was performed on the deceased’s body on March 8, after which the pathologist gave the verbal cause of death as exsanguination and laceration of major vessels of the left arm consistent with the stabbed injury.

    Investigations also revealed that suspects Samuel Tetteh and Abubakar Sadick sold the phone which they had robbed from the deceased to suspect Ibrahim Abdul Rakib who later sold it to suspect Safianu Musah.

    Suspect Safianu Musah is being evasive as to the whereabouts of the phone and claims to have sold it to suspect Yussif Mohammed and later to suspect Abdul Gafaru Abdul Karim.

    Both suspects have been arrested and are assisting in the investigation to recover the phone.

    On March 12, a team of police officers led by the Tema Regional Police Commander visited the family of the deceased and briefed them on the investigations done so far.

    We wish to commend all police officers at all levels of Command, especially the crack police intelligence and investigation teams as well as the Ashiaman District Police Command for their professionalism and meticulous dedication, working around the clock to unravel this case.

    We would like to assure the public, especially the family of the deceased, that all the suspects are in Police custody and will be put before the court on Monday, March 13, for justice.

    Imoro, a 21-year-old soldier, was reportedly assaulted and killed by unknown assailants at Taifa, a suburb of Ashaiman.

    According to the reports, the deceased was allegedly stabbed several times by the attackers on Saturday, March 4, 2023.

    The unfortunate incident led some personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces to storm Ashaiman and brutalise residents. The assault on residents has been trending online.

    It was while Ghanaians were talking about the murder and the reaction of the soldiers that the video of @nanayhaamingle53’s video with the murdered young man emerged.

    Apart from the loved-up moments, the video also showed screenshots of love messages exchanged between a couple which the lady purports to be between her and Imoro.

    Other parts showed the late soldier playing with her and kissing her cheek.

    Sharing the video, she said:

    The young lady deactivated her account but the video had already found its way to other social media platforms like Instagram.

    A soldier from the 3rd Battalion Infantry in Sunyani is said to have been killed on Friday in Tafia, an Ashaiman neighborhood in the Greater Accra area.

    Imoro Sheriff, 21, allegedly visited his lover nearby before being slain by a gang.

    Immediately after leaving the girlfriend’s house, Imoro—whose rank can not be immediately confirmed—was attacked with knives and other weapons.

    Every time Imoro visited Ashaiman, where he was born and raised, it was rumored that he would pay the girlfriend a visit.

    The father of the deceased, Asa­nubu Imoro, confirmed the death of his son. He heard of his son’s death via social media.

    Asanubu Imoro said the son, who was based in Sunyani, Bono Region, informed him that he was attending a military programme in Accra and will visit family mem­bers on Friday.

    “We were expecting him. When we called his number late into the night, there was no response. Somebody showed me a video and asked, do you know this man, that was when I identified my son.”

    According to Asanubu Imoro, the military and other security agency have been in close contact with the family as investigation into the killing is on going.

    Meanwhile, the military are in Ashaiman ensuring their find the culprits. They have abused residents in their quest to bring justice to their fallen colleague.

    The military has detained 72 Ashaiman residents in the Greater Accra Area to question them over the death of an officer over the weekend.

    Although it is unknown to what barracks the residents have been transferred, Ashaiman constituency Member of Parliament, Ernest Dogbey, stated in an interview that more than 72 residents had likely been detained.

    According to reports, roughly 20 highly armed soldiers entered the neighborhood at dawn on Tuesday and began attacking locals, preventing them from even leaving their houses.

    “The soldiers are on the street and preventing everyone from stepping out. I should have left for work by now, but I can’t even step out,” an eyewitness said.

    Another eyewitness said “We gathered that a military man was killed, a young man, I don’t know what led to his death, but some military have come to the area and nobody can go out. They knock on your door and once you step out you will receive slaps”.

    “It is very dangerous and everybody is scared to go out…they are using their boots, and hands to attack anyone they see. If you are a young man they just attack you and if you are a woman and dressed in a certain way you become a suspect to them.”

    The invasion of the soldiers come after a 22-year-old soldier with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) band in Sunyani in the Bono Region was reportedly stabbed to death by unknown attackers Saturday dawn.

    The soldier, according to sources, was returning from his girlfriend’s house in Taifa and heading towards his residence at Zongo-Laka in Ashaiman when the unfortunate incident occurred.

    Though he was carrying a laptop and other electronic gadgets the attackers made away with only his iPhone.

    Police are currently investigating the circumstances under which the soldier was killed and appealing for information from the public.

    The suspect, identified as Iorliam Emmanuel, is said to be working under the 156-task force battalion in Mainok, Borno state.

    According to Zagazola Makama, a publication focused on the LakeChad region, the soldier was caught in possession of ammunition on his way out of Maiduguri, the state capital.

  • Soldier allegedly crashes cyclist to death at Somanya

    A military officer has knocked down a cyclist to death at Somanya in the Eastern Region.

    The soldier W.O. II Teye Stephen Kwame, 43 years, of 49 Engineer Regiment, Burma Camp Accra, was driving a Toyota Matrix Salon car with registration number GT 490-14 from Somanya towards Accra.

    However, on reaching a section of the road near Akorle a suburb of Somanya at about 11:45 pm he accidentally knocked down Alphonse Duatte,34, who was riding a bicycle at the nearside edge of the road killing him instantly.

    On receipt of information, Police proceeded to the scene and found the body lying at the edge of the road in a pool of blood.

    The body was conveyed and deposited at Atua Government Hospital for autopsy.

    The Acting Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Sargeant Francis Gomado confirmed the incident to Kasapa News adding that the suspect driver W.O. II Teye Stephen Kwame was held to assist the investigation, and later handed over to his Army Unit.

    The accident vehicle has been impounded at the station for investigation.

  • Soldier allegedly shoots 50-year-old man at coronavirus checkpoint for using unapproved route

    A military man on operation covid-19 safety duties has shot at a 50-year-old motor rider for allegedly using unapproved route at a barrier at Dobro in the Nsawam Adoagyir Municipality of the Eastern Region.

    According to the police, report from the security personnel at the said barrier indicated that the motor rider refused several signals to stop when he attempted to use unapproved route.

    He was said to have jumped a bamboo barricade at the barrier where the security officers were doing road snap checks and nearly ran into some military men there.

    In attempt to stop the rider, the police said, the unnamed military man aimed at the back tyre of the motorbike and shot at it.

    He then fell with the motor and sustained injuries in the process.

    He was rushed to the Nsawam Government Hospital for medication attention.

    Briefing 3news.com on the Friday morning incident, the Nsawam Divisional Police Commander Sup Marian Adu- Osei said, said the rider in his oral statement claimed his brakes failed him for which reason he could not stop when signalled to.

    She said investigations have commenced to establish the true facts of the incident.

    Meanwhile, health officials are awaiting an X-ray results to ascertain whether the man suffered from the gunshot.

    Whiles, there is a surge in videos showing security officials assaulting civilians being circulated on social media, GhanaWeb’s lenses have spotted a rare but heart-melting video of a soldier who had something to say about the issue.

    The video which has gone viral on social media has seen Ghanaians commending this Ghanaian military officer who chose to encourage some passengers not to put their lives at risk because of hardships in life.

    “It is better than losing your lives tp go through the hardships in your homes than you leaving this world. Your maker up there has a purpose for you so please stay home…Make it very easy for everybody. We would be glad to stay with our families but we are now here working for God and country. It is for you, so please stay home,” he is heard saying.

    Though his identity is yet to be disclosed, Ghanaians have taken to their social media platforms to heap praises on him for choosing such an approach in ensuring the lockdown directives, imposed by the president are adhered to.

    Soldiers involved in lockdown brutalities withdrawn from operations

    Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces have withdrawn some soldiers seen maltreating civilians in viral videos from the Operation COVID Safety.

    Some videos making the rounds on social media and sighted by Prime News Ghana on day one of the Coronavirus lockdown revealed that some military personnel who are part of the Operation COVID Safety are seen maltreating persons found flouting the directive.

    Some of the persons are made to squat, whiles others are made to crawl on the ground with their bare hands as a punishment for flouting the directive.

    Over 1000 slum settlements in different stages of development have been identified along the Accra-Tema motorway.

    However, the highway is currently in a deplorable state as it is covered with deep potholes and road markings have been wiped off by the thousands of vehicles that ply the roads every day.

    The motorway has deteriorated and now a death trap with high traffic growth and encroachment.

  • Coup plot: My arrest was to gag me Soldier tells court

    Colonel Samuel Kodzo Gameli, one of the 10 accused persons indicted in the alleged coup plot says he is being held over the cracks and challenges the Ghana Armed Forces.

    He told the court on Tuesday his involvement in the trial is meant to vilify and gag him as a senior military officer.

    Meanwhile, Col. Gershun Akpa, one of the six military personnel in the alleged coup plotters has been discharged.

    In court on Thursday, February 13, when Lawyer Victor Kojogah Adawudu moved a third bail application for them, the state said the AG has advised that Col Gershun Akpa be discharged, but the others would be committed for trial.

    Hilda Craig, Senior State Attorney, while opposing to the bail application said “their charge statements have been taken and all 10 except one have been indicted and we are likely to do the committals on February 20, at the District Court.

    “Gershun Akpa is the only one we have been advised to discharge. So we are waiting for the next court date to discharge him, all the rest have been indicted,” the Senior State Attorney told the court.

  • Six more soldiers charged over alleged destabilization plot

    Six other military personnel have been put before the Kaneshie District Court in connection with the alleged plot to topple the government.

    The six are WO2 Esther, Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, Lance Corporal Albert Baba Ibrahim, Lance Corporal Godwin Nii Ankrah, Lance Corporal Sylvester Akapewu and Lance Corporal Seidu Abubakar.

    They have been charged with possession of explosives, arms and ammunition without lawful authority.

    They join one other senior military officer, Colonel Samuel Kojo Gameli, who was arraigned last week and charged with possession of explosives, firearms and ammunition without lawful excuse.

    Colonel Samuel Kojo Gameli was charged alongside a civilian, Geshong Akpa.

    They have been accused of working with Dr. Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, Ezor Kafui and Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu who were arrested for plotting to topple the government.

    A joint security operation on September 20, 2019 led to the arrest of three persons after a raid on the Citadel Hospital in Alajo, which Dr. Mac-Palm manages.

    Security personnel also discovered five locally manufactured handguns, a foreign handgun, three locally manufactured handgun barrels, three smoke grenades, 22 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and some AK-47 rounds.

    The three were arraigned and charged with conspiracy to manufacture arms and ammunition without lawful authority.

    The arrests followed 15 months of surveillance and gathering of evidence on the activities of the suspects.

    The government also said meetings between the civilian suspects and serving military personnel with a view to executing a plot to obtain weapons, take over key installations, and secure funding for the purported coup “were closely monitored.”

    According to the prosecution, some of the suspects are members of an NGO called Take Action Ghana.

  • Ghanaian-born US citizen posed as soldier in dating site scam – Prosecutors

    A New Jersey man is accused of using dating websites to scam women out of $2.1m (£1.7m) while claiming to be a US soldier stationed overseas.

    Prosecutors are using social media posts of Rubbin Sarpong, 35, bragging about his wealth and holding wads of cash as evidence against him.

    One of his alleged victims killed herself after transferring more than $90,000 to him, court documents say.

    Mr Sarpong, a Ghanaian citizen with US residency, faces wire fraud charges.

    Since January 2016, Mr Sarpong used websites Match.com, Plenty of Fish and Ourtime.com to fool more than 30 unsuspecting women into sending him money, according to prosecutors.

    Working with people in Ghana, he is accused of claiming to be a US soldier in Syria who had been awarded gold bars by the military. Prosecutors say he told his alleged victims their money would be returned once the bars arrived in the US.

    “Unfortunately, we live in an era where every contact we have with a stranger online must be viewed through the lens of scepticism,” the FBI’s Gregory Ehrie said.

    “Fraudsters are constantly searching for ways to separate people from their money in order to reap a profit while putting forth little effort.”

    Pictures include one of him holding a stack of cash to his ear like a phone with the caption “making a phone call to let my bank know am coming”, and other photos of him with jewellery, electronics and cars.

    In one video on his Instagram page, he films himself opening a “money gun” which shoots out bank notes.

    At a court appearance on Wednesday, a judge dismissed his claim he could not afford a lawyer.

    Mr Sarpong’s fianceÊ, who attended the hearing, did not speak to reporters about the case afterwards.

    None of Mr Sarpong’s alleged co-conspirators have been charged. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
