Ex-Boeing whistleblower discovered dead with gunshot wounds

A former worker at Boeing, who had raised serious problems about the company’s production, was found dead in Charleston, South Carolina.

A news release from the Charleston County Coroner’s Office said that a man named John Barnett, who was 62 years old, died on March 9. It seems like he shot himself. The police are still investigating and waiting for the official cause of death and any other information that might help understand what happened.

John was giving information to the media through his lawyers. They said he was answering questions for a court case where he was being punished for telling the truth. It was almost over. He was feeling happy and excited to leave this part of his life behind and start something new. We didn’t think he would kill himself. Nobody can believe it. We are all very sad. We need to know more about what happened to John. The Charleston police have to look into this really well and tell the public what they find. We need to carefully look at every detail.

His family told NPR that Barnett’s case is going to trial in June. They said he wants to go to court and hopes it will make Boeing change its culture.

His lawyers, Robert Turkewitz and Brian Knowles, said that Barnett is a very brave and honest man with high moral values. He loved his family, friends, Boeing company, his Boeing co-workers, and the pilots and people who flew on Boeing planes very much. We hardly ever met someone with a more honest and direct personality.

The police had to go to a Holiday Inn in Charleston to check on someone’s safety just before 10:20 am on Saturday. When the police got there, they saw Barnett sitting in the driver’s seat of a truck in the parking lot. He had been shot in the head. He was carrying a gun. Barnett was said to be dead when the police arrived.

The police report also mentioned that they found a paper next to him that seemed like a note.

The hotel got a call from someone named “Rob” asking to check on his coworker, John Barnett. This made the hotel staff go to the truck in the parking lot.

The news said that Barnett was in Charleston for some legal interviews and was going to be questioned more on Saturday. He was discovered dead when he didn’t show up.

Barnett’s death and send our condolences to his family. Barnett passed away, and we are thinking of his family and friends.

The police in Charleston said they know that many people around the world are interested in this case. They want to make sure the investigation is based on facts and evidence, not people guessing or making things up. Because the investigation is sensitive, we can’t do interviews with the media right now. “We do this to follow the rules and make sure our investigations are fair. ”

Barnett used to be a manager at Boeing and had been there for a long time. He found pieces of metal hanging over the wires that control the plane’s movements. This was reported by the media from a story in the New York Times in 2019.

Barnett said to the Times that if those “sharp” pieces went into the wiring, the outcome could be very bad.

“As a quality manager at Boeing, you are responsible for catching any mistakes before they affect the safety of the airplanes that people fly on,” Barnett told the Times. “I haven’t seen a plane from Charleston that I would feel comfortable flying on because I’m not sure if it’s safe and in good condition. ”

Brad Zaback, who is in charge of the plant, sent a message to the plant’s workers and gave it to the media. He said that the Times’ report doesn’t show the program and our team at the plant accurately.

Zaback said that the Times refused to visit the plant, and he also said that quality is very important to them. He added that the plant makes very good airplanes.

  • Joe Biden emerge victorious in South Carolina democratic primary

Joe Biden emerge victorious in South Carolina democratic primary

US President Joe Biden has achieved a resounding victory in the Democratic primary in South Carolina. Following Saturday’s vote and with nearly all ballots counted, Biden secured all 55 pledged delegates, as projected by the BBC’s US partner CBS. This primary marks the first official contest within the Democratic Party leading up to the 2024 presidential election.

Facing limited competition within his party, President Biden aimed to position Republican Donald Trump as a “loser.” He fondly recalled how South Carolina voters played a crucial role in revitalizing his 2020 campaign and expressed confidence that they would pave the way for his victory in the 2024 presidential race.

Democrats Marianne Williamson and Dean Phillips lagged significantly behind Biden, with preliminary figures indicating they each secured only 2% of the votes. South Carolina’s diverse population, particularly its substantial Black community, played a pivotal role in Biden’s successful bid for the Democratic nomination in 2020.

In a January address to a predominantly Black audience in the state, Biden acknowledged their significance, stating, “You’re the reason I’m president. You’re the reason Donald Trump is a loser, and you’re the reason we’re gonna win and beat him again.”

Formally announcing his 2024 re-election bid in April 2023, Biden emphasized the country’s pivotal moment and his need for more time to “finish this job.” The President actively advocated for changes to his party’s rules, ensuring that South Carolina became the first state in the nomination process, with a campaign adviser highlighting the goal of reflecting the diversity of the Democratic Party.

  • Prisoner Alex Murdaugh denied phone access after media call

Prisoner Alex Murdaugh denied phone access after media call

Alex Murdaugh, a lawyer from South Carolina who is serving a life sentence for murder, is no longer allowed to use his phone in prison because he talked to the media without permission.

Prison officials said that the lawyer of a person who is 55 years old recorded him reading his diary entries during a phone call in June.

It is said that the recording was later given to the makers of an upcoming documentary on Fox Nation about his situation.

Murdaugh was found guilty in March of murdering his wife and younger son.

A spokesperson for South Carolina state prisons explained that people harmed by a crime should not have to see or hear the person who harmed them or their family member on the news.

Murdaugh broke two prison rules and got in trouble at a meeting this week.

He will not be able to use his phone, tablet, or buy things from the prison store for a month.

The department will decide if and when inmate Murdaugh can have a tablet again.

Murdaugh is being investigated because his staff found out that a phone call with his lawyer was used by the media.

His phone was taken away while they were investigating, but he supposedly borrowed someone else’s phone to make a call.

Murdaugh’s wife, Maggie, who is 52 years old, and their son Paul, who is 22 years old, were shot from a close distance on their family property on June 7, 2021. The prosecutors said he killed them to distract people from his money crimes and get people to feel sorry for him.

The famous legal family in South Carolina was involved in a big court case that caught the attention of the entire United States. Murdaugh received a punishment of life in prison with no chance of release.

According to court records, he is likely to admit that he took millions of dollars from his clients and he will appear in federal court next month to do so.

  • Myrtle Beach in US witnesses a plane crash into the sea

Myrtle Beach in US witnesses a plane crash into the sea

Hundreds of beachgoers in Myrtle Beach watched as a banner plane crashed into the water.

At the South Carolina beach, a yellow jet crashed into the surf at 11:35 a.m. on Monday near 40th Avenue North.

According to Cpl. Chris Starling of the Myrtle Beach police, the pilot was taken to a local hospital.

From the shore, onlookers could be seen staring as the plane continued to float in the water around 20 yards away.

South Carolina‘s Myrtle Beach is the scene of an aeroplane disaster.

According to Starling, authorities were waiting for the US Coast Guard and maybe the Federal Aviation Administration to handle retrieving the jet from the water safely.

The pilot’s status wasn’t known right away.

The pilot was apparently able to escape with the assistance of about a dozen individuals who had reportedly already entered the water.

Valerie Randolph, a witness, stated to The Mirror that “this happened right in front of us.” The first male to board the plane was the boyfriend of my daughter.

Ten to fifteen men were supporting the plane while lifeguards freed the man. With the aid of some very heroic spectators, those four to five guards were able to save his life.

There was supposedly no one else in the aircraft but the pilot.

According to WPDE, his aircraft is a 1947-built Piper PA-12 Fixed Wing Single-Engine Aircraft with the registration number N3036M from Barnstormers Aerial Advertising.

Only two days prior, a banner plane near Hampton Beach in New Hampshire attempted to make a water landing but overturned in the air as soon as its nose touched the sea. The aircraft performed a somersault and landed upright in the water.

The pilot was pulled out of the water by state lifeguards even though he was unharmed. There was nobody else in the aircraft. What precipitated the collision was not immediately clear.

Liane McNamara, a witness, reported that the plane crashed not far from where beachgoers were swimming.

Some others questioned whether this was a joke. Is it a prank? McNamara spoke with WMUR. It was quite bizarre. Even now, it seems absurd.

One person was hurt in a shooting in the city the night before the jet crash in Myrtle Beach.

  • More than 120 million people at risk as Code Red is declared in Washington, DC

More than 120 million people at risk as Code Red is declared in Washington, DC

Due to smoke from the current Canadian wildfires, air quality alerts are in effect for more than one-third of the US population.

According to the US Department of Environmental Protection, there are over 120 million people in the Midwest and East Coast who are exposed to poor air, from Minnesota to Virginia.

A number of dangerous wildfires that have been raging across Canada are the source of the smoke. There are now over 200 fires blazing across all of Canada.

The fires have burned about 30,000 square miles of wilderness – an area roughly the size of South Carolina.

Air pollution is measured by the air quality index (AQI), which determines the average amount of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the atmosphere.

AQI ratings between 101 and 150 are considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, such as people suffering from heart or breathing. An AQI above 150 is considered unhealthy for all people.

An AQI of over 300 is considered actively hazardous and likely to effect a region’s entire population.

As of Thursday afternoon, Washington, DC had an AQI of 176, making it the second most polluted city in the world.

On Wednesday, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments issued a ‘code red’ warning for the nation’s capital, warning all citizens to avoid long exposure to the air.

The warning extended through Thursday, but will be lifted to a ‘code orange’ on Friday.

‘Air quality in the DC region is expected to improve tomorrow although it will still be unhealthy for sensitive groups,’ the local government said.

Photos from DC show the city’s many monuments and landmarks enveloped in thick plumes of smoke, including the White House and the Capitol Building.

The city with the worst air quality on Thursday was Detroit, Michigan, where the AQI peaked at 202 and was rated ‘very unhealthy.’

Earlier in the week, Chicago, Illinois reported the worst air quality in the world as the index rose above 150.

Some sensors in Pittsburgh and other parts of western Pennsylvania were detecting an AQI as high as 237.

Officials in New York also warned citizens to take caution.

‘Air quality is unhealthy in every corner of the state of New York,’ Governor Kathy Hochul said at a news conference.

Western, central, and northern New York were all placed under air quality warnings. The city of Buffalo saw a high AQI of 159 on Thursday.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams also warned New Yorkers to take precautions on Thursday, and advised citizens to wear masks and avoid exercising outside.

The city and other parts of the Hudson Valley and Long Island reported ‘moderate’ AQI numbers, much lower than when a thick orange cloud of smog enveloped the city three weeks ago.

Governor Hochul said there was ‘no end in sight’ for the Empire State. ‘This is our new reality,’ the governor said.

  • Appeals court puts Biden’s student debt relief plan on pause

Joe Biden’s student debt relief plan has hit a legal roadblock.

According to CNN, a federal appeals court temporarily blocked the program on Friday, as it reviews a challenge brought by six GOP-led states. More than a month after Biden announced the plan, Nebraska, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, and South Carolina filed a lawsuit that claimed Biden could not cancel the debt without congressional approval, which he never received. The states also argued that the debt relief would threaten their tax revenues as well as hurt state-related entities that own or invest in privately held loans.

A lower court judge dismissed the case Thursday, stating the plaintiffs failed to establish “ongoing injury” caused by the program. The states immediately appealed the ruling, and the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted a stay as the case is being reviewed.

The Biden administration has until Monday to respond. The plaintiffs have been asked to issue their reply no later than Tuesday.

POTUS said the debt relief plan aims “to give everybody a little more breathing room.”

  • Hurricane Ian heads to South Carolina

Hurricane Ian is projected to reach the coast of South Carolina later on Friday, move over the east of the state and then travel up to North Carolina.

According to the National Hurricane Center’s latest advisory, Ian is currently about 105 miles southeast of Charleston, the largest city in South Carolina with some 800,000 people.

Ian’s maximum sustained winds have remained around 85 mph (140kmph) and NHC forecasts say winds of tropical storm intensity are ongoing across much of the coast of the Carolinas.

Life-threatening storm surge and hurricane conditions are expected in the region by afternoon.

Ian is however expected to rapidly weaken after it makes landfall, become a so-called extratropical low – a cyclone with a low pressure centre – by the time it moves over North Carolina and dissipate by Saturday night.

These satellite images show Hurricane Ian’s progression as it first barrelled across Cuba in the Caribbean on Tuesday before heading to Florida.

Ian was downgraded to a tropical storm after making landfall in Florida on Wednesday and Thursday.

But as it moved into the Atlantic Ocean it regained its hurricane strength and is now heading for South Carolina and Georgia.

South Carolina braces for life-threatening storm surges

As Hurricane Ian heads towards the coast of South Carolina, meterorologists are warning of life-threatening storm surges and winds of 140km per hour (87mph).

Tens of thousands of residents have moved away from low-lying land.

In Florida, the focus has now turned to a massive search and rescue operation after Ian caused widespread damage across the state on Wednesday and Thursday.

Nearly two million still without power in Florida

Just under two million homes and businesses in Florida are still without power after the state was battered by Hurricane Ian.

That’s down from more than 3.3 million power customers who have been affected by the storm since it hit Florida’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday.

Emergency workers have been trying to reach stranded Florida residents as Ian heads on towards North and South Carolina, leaving behind deadly floodwaters, downed power lines and widespread damage.

Duke Energy Corp said it was readying crews to respond to potential power outages across the Carolinas, according to Reuters.

  • Hurricane Ian’s route through Florida from Cuba

On Tuesday, Hurricane Ian first tore across Cuba in the Caribbean before making its way to Florida, as shown in these satellite photographs.

Following its Wednesday and Thursday landfall in Florida, Ian was downgraded to a tropical storm.

But as it moved into the Atlantic Ocean it regained its hurricane strength and is now heading for South Carolina and Georgia.

  • Ian approaches Cat 5 Strength as Floridians Run Away from “Catastrophic Flooding, Life-Threatening Storm Surge”

With maximum winds of 155 mph and as it approaches Florida’s west coast, Hurricane Ian is a devastating Category 4 storm, just shy of the most deadly Category 5 status. Early on Wednesday, the state already began to experience high winds and rain.

Residents made last-minute preparations to board up their homes and businesses.  And miles of cars packed the roads as residents sought to escape ahead of the monster storm.

“We have about 2.5 million Floridians that are currently under some type of an evacuation order,” said Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Saint Petersburg’s mayor issued a warning for those staying behind. “After a certain time when tropical force winds are here, we will not be sending out first responders,” said Mayor Ken Welch.

The storm is forecast to make landfall Wednesday afternoon in the Fort Myers area. Life-threatening conditions are expected, including several feet of storm surge and more than 20 inches of rain in some areas.

“In some areas, there will be catastrophic flooding and life-threatening storm surge,” said DeSantis.

The state is bracing for millions of power outages. Thirty thousand workers are on standby to restore electricity after the storm passes.

Seven thousand National Guard members have been activated under the state of emergency.

“We could be everything from security, to transportation,” said Major General Eifert, head of Florida’s National Guard. “Aviation is a big part if we end up in search and rescue scenarios. So, we’re kind of the Swiss army knife of operations. We can be used for whatever the Dept. of Emergency Management needs us to do.”

CBN’s Operation Blessing team has been pre-staging disaster relief supplies in Ocala, Florida so they can jump into action with aid once the storm passes.

“This is going to be a nasty nasty day, two days,” Gov. DeSantis said early Wednesday. “Do what you need to do to stay safe. If you are where that storm is approaching, you’re already in hazardous conditions. It’s going to get a lot worse very quickly. So please hunker down.”

An odd precursor to Ian’s landfall is signaling just how powerful the storm is – strong enough to suck the water out of Tampa Bay. Meteorologist Greg Dee with WTFS-TV in Tampa shared a video of the phenomenon on Facebook.

Meanwhile, parts of Georgia and South Carolina are preparing for the storm too. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency, with 500 National Guard troops on standby if needed.

  • GOP lawmaker suggests there’s ‘pressure’ on Republicans to impeach Biden if party wins the House

Nancy Mace of South Carolina said Sunday she believes there is “pressure” for House Republicans to move to impeach President Joe Biden if they gain control of the chamber after the midterm elections.

“I believe there’s pressure on the Republicans to put that forward and have that vote,” Mace told NBC’s Chuck Todd on “Meet the Press” when asked if she foresees impeachment proceedings should her party win control of the House. “I think that’s what some folks are considering.”

But the freshman lawmaker added: “If that happens, I do believe it’s divisive.”

Mace did not mention the source of the alleged pressure and was not asked to elaborate on who is considering the move.

Asked Sunday how she would vote if an impeachment vote came to the floor, Mace said: “I will not vote for impeachment of any president if I feel that due process was stripped away, for anyone. I typically vote constitutionally, regardless of who is in power.”

CNN reported earlier this year that hard-line elements of the House Republican Conference were agitating to launch impeachment proceedings against Biden if the GOP takes power after the midterms — a move GOP leaders have so far declined to embrace.

House Republicans are also plotting revenge on the select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection, CNN has reported. Former President Donald Trump has been leaning heavily on his Capitol Hill allies to defend him against a slew of damaging revelations about his role in the deadly attack on the US Capitol. And as Republicans search for ways to undermine those findings, their party has started to lay the groundwork to investigate the January 6 panel itself. Some of Trump’s fiercest acolytes have also begun publicly pushing for hearings and probes into his baseless claims of fraud in the 2020 election.

While House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy has vowed to conduct aggressive oversight and investigations in a GOP-led House, it’s unclear just how far he would be willing to go when it comes to January 6 and the 2020 presidential election.

Mace, who flipped a Charleston-area seat in 2020, voted to certify Biden’s presidential election victory, earning Trump’s wrath. Faced with charges of insufficient loyalty to the former President, she drew a Trump-backed primary challenger but ended up prevailing by 8 points in her June primary.

Mace told NBC she was “very much hopeful” to see “a deep bench of Republicans and Democrats who will be running for president” in 2024. But she left the door open to possibly supporting Trump again if he were the 2024 GOP nominee for president.

“I’m going to support whomever Republicans nominate in ’24,” she said.

CNN’s Melanie Zanona, Manu Raju, Gabby Orr and Zachary Cohen contributed to this report.
