O’Reilly SHS stabbing: My grandson was left to bleed while teachers stood by – Family head

The family of the final-year student at O’Reilly Senior High School, Edward Borketey Sackey, who was fatally stabbed by a peer on September 2, 2024, has accused the school’s teachers of negligence.

They believe that the teachers’ failure to act during the incident played a significant role in their son’s death.

The family alleges that footage of the incident shows the teachers passively observing as Edward was attacked and did nothing to help him while he was bleeding.

In an interview with GhanaWeb TV’s #SayItLoud, Nii Afotey Chiribour IV, the family head, condemned the teachers for their inaction, arguing that their failure to intervene or assist while Edward was in distress makes them responsible for his death.

“There were more than 15 vehicles of the teachers parked at the school while the incident was happening. The child was stabbed right in front of them. The boy was lying right in front of them, but they did nothing. The boy was lying there and bleeding. By the time he was taken to the hospital, he had bled out and was pronounced dead upon arriving at the hospital.

“If they (the teachers) had rushed him to the hospital earlier, he would have survived. The boy was running to them for them to save him from his aggressor, but they didn’t come to his aid and watched on as he was being stabbed in front of them,” he told GhanaWeb’s Ishmael Batoma in the Ga dialect.

Nii Chiribour IV revealed that his children were on the verge of attacking the teachers after viewing the footage of the incident.

However, following hours of his pleas to avoid taking matters into their own hands, they eventually left the school.

“They (the teachers) are the ones who killed my child. So, my sons were coming to beat them up and kill them. I was very angry, but I had to stop them because if I had let them, we would have been breaking the law since the police were already involved. So, I calmed them down and told them that they would be arrested if they touched the teachers. I begged them not to do anything and allow the police to do their job—it took 2 hours to calm them down. Because I was their father, they respected me and left the school,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that it will conduct an investigation into the stabbing incident.

In a video gone viral, two male students were engaged in a fisticuff in the presence of several other students.

There are reports that the school authorities, particularly teachers failed to take action during the clash between the two students and after the stabbing occurred.

Meanwhile, the father of Edward Sackey, Enoch Sackey, has announced his intention to sue the school following his son’s tragic death.

In an interview with Accra-based CitiNews, Enoch Sackey expressed profound frustration and demanded accountability from the school for the circumstances leading to his son’s death.

On Tuesday, Sackey and other family members, dressed in red and black, picketed the school to voice their dissatisfaction. They have expressed disappointment that neither the school administration, the attacker’s family, nor the police have contacted them regarding the incident.

  • Woman accused of tying and stabbing Tinder date before ordering food

Authorities in Colorado have brought charges against a woman who allegedly stabbed and choked his Tinder date after tying him with duct tape. According to Law & Crime, the suspect, identified as Lauren Marie Dooley, allegedly assaulted her victim after she performed oral sex on him.

An affidavit for probable cause identified the victim as a 21-year-old Black male. Dooley, who was arrested on September 28, faces a slew of charges including second-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault, menacing, and false imprisonment.

Per the affidavit, Colorado Springs Police Department officers were called to a home on the 2500 block of E Cache La Poudre Street after someone contacted authorities for assistance. The individual who made the call was identified as male, and he was heard saying he was “bleeding all over the bed”. A female was also heard talking while the male subject was on the line, the affidavit stated, adding that the victim was later heard telling an individual, “because you cut me” and “you’re going to kill me.”

“Upon our arrival, residents at the apartment advised there was a naked male in the parking lot that needed help,” the affidavit stated. “Officers located [the victim] who was naked and appeared to be bleeding from a laceration on his left arm.  [He] was also actively backing away from the suspect . . . Dooley . . . who appeared to have blood smeared on her arms and hands.  [The victim] exclaimed that Lauren tied him up and cut him.”

The victim told investigators that he went to Dooley’s home to meet her after they established contact on the Tinder dating app. When he got there, the male victim said he had a brief conversation with Dooley before she undressed him and gave him oral sex.

“She then used duct tape to bind [the victim’s] wrists together and ankles together,” the affidavit stated. “[The victim] found it odd, but consented to it. However, when Lauren produced a kitchen knife and demanded he get into her bedroom, [the victim] no longer consented to staying at the residence.”

But out of fear that Dooley “would harm him with the knife”, the victim ultimately “obeyed and got into her bed,” per the affidavit.

“Lauren climbed on top of him and proceeded to use the knife to cut his left shoulder,” the document added. “Lauren then used both her hands to apply direct pressure to [the victim’s] throat for approximately 20 seconds, making it difficult to breath. Lauren stopped, but only to procure a belt that she then placed around [the victim’s] neck. She tightened the belt for another 20 seconds, once more making it difficult to breath. When she took it off, she checked [the victim’s] neck for a pulse.

The victim told investigators that Dooley later made him get inside the bathroom after she got angry because he was “bleeding all over her bed”, Law & Crime reported. The female suspect then used the DoorDash app to order food. But when the person who was delivering the food got to her residence, Dooley allegedly told her victim, “If you scream or say anything, I’ll kill you.”

After she was done with her meal, Dooley retired to bed with the victim and fell asleep. And though the victim ultimately managed to free himself with the knife during that time, Dooley woke up after he hit a table. Police said he eventually managed to exit the home and call authorities.

“When officers conducted a cursory sweep of [the] unit . . .  to see if there was anyone else that needed medical assistance, they observed a kitchen knife near the bed, several blood soaked rags and blood all over the bathtub,” the affidavit said.

Dooley’s court appearance was set for October 6.
