An additional 3,949 tertiary students have received financial support from the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) for the 2024/2025 academic year.

The recent disbursement raises the total number of beneficiaries to 35,608 across 130 public and private institutions nationwide.

According to SLTF management, the latest disbursement reflects the John Mahama-led administration’s pledge to ensure inclusive access to education, regardless of students’ backgrounds.

The SLTF, conversely, has reiterated its resolve to release funds on time in order to allow students to gain admission into their preferred tertiary institutions without financial hindrance.

Earlier this year, the Fund approved financial aid for 9,433 students enrolled in 62 public and private tertiary institutions nationwide.

The Ministry of Education has made accessible a registration portal to help first-year students at public tertiary institutions in Ghana apply for financial assistance under the government’s new No-Fees-Stress Policy.

Launching the portal on Monday, April 29, Education Minister Hon. Haruna Iddrisu described the policy as a bold and strategic move by the government to improve access to tertiary education and invest in the country’s future workforce.

The SLTF explained that the new system will make it easier for eligible students to register, submit their details, and be assessed for financial support.

The portal is now live and can be accessed via https://www.nofeestress.sltf.gov.gh or https://www.sltf.gov.gh.

For additional assistance, students are encouraged to call 0302751020 or visit any SLTF zonal office across the country.

Meanwhile, the government has clarified that first-year public university students who have already paid their academic fees for the current academic year will not receive cash refunds.

Instead, the government will apply the equivalent amount as credit toward the students’ second-year fees.

Earlier, the Trust Fund announced a refund for first-year students at public tertiary institutions who have paid their academic user fees for the 2024/2025 academic year.

The refund is expected to take place in June this year, under the “No-Fee Stress” initiative.

The Trust Fund has emphasized that applications submitted will undergo thorough checks.

Dr. Shiraz added, “We urge all first-year students to apply promptly to secure their reimbursement.”

Students have been admonished to channel inquiries via the SLTF’s official website.

The “No-Fee Stress” initiative was a major campaign promise by then-presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama, who pledged to absorb academic fees for all Level 100 students within the first 120 days of his administration.

In response, the government has allocated GH¢499.8 million under the 2025 national budget to support the policy.

The SLTF, established in December 2005 under the Trustee Incorporation Act 1962 (Act 106), is dedicated to managing financial resources efficiently to support students while upholding national principles.

SLTF releases loans to over 9,400 tertiary students across Ghana

The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) has approved loans for 9,433 students across 62 public and private tertiary institutions in Ghana.

Since stepping into her role, Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. Saajida Shiraz has taken decisive action to address key concerns. One of her first major steps has been ensuring that students receive the financial support they need.

She acknowledged the delays in disbursements and extended an apology to affected students. Assuring them of a more efficient process, she emphasized her commitment to timely financial assistance for all eligible applicants.

Dr. Shiraz has also begun implementing the SLTF Plus policy, an initiative aligned with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for a stronger tertiary education financing system. This policy aims to improve both financial support for students and the overall efficiency of the fund.

Looking back on her first week in office, she described it as productive, highlighting engagements with stakeholders. She participated in discussions at the National Education Forum on education financing, interacted with SLTF staff, and explored strategies to strengthen the fund’s operations.

She has also collaborated with Deputy CEO Kojo Danquah and visited SLTF’s zonal and regional offices in Accra.

Additionally, she noted that some immediate interventions have been made to ensure the fund operates in the best interest of students.

Through these early efforts, Dr. Shiraz is setting the stage for a more responsive SLTF, assuring students of better service delivery and improved access to financial support.

Students Loan Trust Fund publicly exposes loans defaulters

The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) has published the first batch of the names and details of 30 of its borrowers, who have defaulted in repayment of their loans.

The publications in the Daily Graphic were done on May 17 and May 22.

The loan amounts in default, range from ¢1500 to ¢11,000.

According to the SLTF, the move is in accordance with the Students Loan Trust Fund Act 820, which empowers the SLTF to publish defaulters as one of the necessary steps before prosecution.

Management of the Fund has found the move necessary, as a way of meeting a growing demand for loans from tertiary students.

The CEO of the Fund, Nana Kwaku Agyei Yeboah, said that the increase in demand is a result of the introduction of the “no guarantor” policy and the higher number of students accessing tertiary education due to the implementation of the Free SHS policy.

“The implementation of these two impactful policies by the government, means that for the first time, students from the poorest of families have a real opportunity to access tertiary education.

“Many of them are however financially constrained and need to fall on the SLTF for subsidized government loans”.

He said that the SLTF was putting in place several strategies to meet the increased demand for loans, including diversifying its funding sources and embarking on a more aggressive recovery approach.

The Head of Repayment and Resource Mobilisation, Rosemary Aryee said that the SLTF has over the past few years made significant investments in expanding the number of platforms available to borrowers to repay their loans.

This she said was to create convenience for borrowers and greater efficiency for the SLTF.

Borrowers can now choose to repay their loans through SLTF partner banks, credit or debit cards, mobile money, or the Ghana.gov platform.

Borrowers in the US, Canada, the UK and Europe have the option of using the PayAngel platform to make regular payments.

Ms Aryee said that the SLTF is now turning its attention to enforcing the law by prosecuting defaulting borrowers.

“The Fund relies on the recovery of loans for its sustenance and it is through this, that new generations of students have the opportunity to access financial assistance.

“Borrowers who refuse to repay their loans are denying others the opportunity to access tertiary education and we have taken the decision to commence criminal prosecutions to recover the monies owed”.

  • Obuasi residents praise government for ‘no guarantor’ student loan policy

Some residents of the Obuasi Municipality have heaped praises on the government for introducing the ‘No Guarantor’ Student Loan Policy.

This was after the management of the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) led by its Chief Executive Officer Nana Kwaku Agyei Yeboah met with traders, drivers and market women at the Obuasi Central Market to sensitise them on how to access the fund.

In a series of publicity drives which started on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, in Obuasi, managers of the fund earlier met with Artisans and Staff of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly to also brief them on the details of the SLTF.

Led by Yaa Achiaa, a tomato seller at the Obuasi Central Market, she said hitherto, they had challenges accessing student loans due to difficulties in finding guarantors. She said the government since coming to office in 2017 has made education accessible with the introduction of the Free Senior High School policy and the ‘No Guarantor’ loan system.

“The government has relieved us of the burden of funding education in the country. Now, as parents, we don’t have to go through the stress of looking for money to pay our wards’ school fees. This Government is a blessing,” she added.

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia launched the ‘No Guarantor’ Student Loan Policy at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, on Wednesday, June 8, 2022.

The ‘No Guarantor’ Student Loan Policy, a promise by the Akufo-Addo government before the 2020 elections, is to make tertiary education accessible to Ghanaian youth, especially graduates from the highly subscribed Free Senior High School policy.

With the ‘No Guarantor’ Student Loan Policy, the cumbersome and restrictive policy of students providing three SSNIT contributors as guarantors before they could access student loans for tertiary education is now a thing of the past.

The Chief Executive officer of the Student Loan Trust Fund Nana Kwaku Agyei Yeboah in an interaction with the media after the sensitization sessions in Obuasi said the ‘No Guarantor’ loan scheme is proof of the government’s commitment to enhance access to education in the country.

He appealed to Ghanaians to take full advantage of the ease with which one can access the loan, to acquire it to cushion their children’s education.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi Honourable Elijah Adansi-Bonah lauded the government for introducing the policy. He said the government despite the economic challenges facing the country, has not relented in performing its responsibilities of improving the living standards of Ghanaians.

He appealed to residents of Obuasi to rally behind the Government to deliver on its promises.
