Kronum: Fire outbreak at Goil destroys four vehicles

Four vehicles were burnt beyond recognition in a fire outbreak around 3:00 a.m. on Friday, February 20, at the Kronum branch of Goil Filling Station in the Suame Municipality.

The affected vehicles, a Nissan Urvan bus, a Kia Pregio, and two tricycles were parked near the station’s premises. According to eyewitnesses, the fire started from the Kia Pregio before spreading to the other vehicles.

It took the intervention of the station’s security guard and some residents to bring the fire under control before personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, Bohyen Fire Station, arrived at the scene. Thankfully, no casualties were reported, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

This update comes less than a week after a fuel tanker explosion in the early hours of Saturday, February 14, destroyed multiple vehicles along the Nsawam-Accra Highway, causing heavy traffic congestion on the busy stretch.

The fire claimed the lives of three (3) victims including two males and one female. According to a report from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), a total of fifteen (15) casualties were recorded following the incident, comprising eleven (11) males and four (4) females.

Preliminary reports indicate that the explosion occurred after the tanker was involved in a collision, which caused the vehicle to catch fire.

Thick black smoke was seen rising from the scene, sparking fear among motorists and residents in nearby communities.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service responded promptly and are working to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to other vehicles and properties.

Emergency responders have since cordoned off the affected section of the road as firefighting operations continue.

No casualties have been confirmed so far. However, emergency teams are still assessing the situation and searching the area to ensure that no victims are trapped.

The incident has caused significant traffic disruption along the Nsawam-Accra route, which serves as a major link between the Eastern Region and Accra.

Motorists have been advised to exercise caution when approaching the area and to use alternative routes while firefighting and vehicle recovery operations continue. Police personnel are also at the scene managing traffic and ensuring the safety of road users.

Meanwhile, Eastern South Regional Police Commander, DCOP George Ohene Bossman Boadi, has warned the public against stealing fuel from tankers involved in road accidents.

The warning comes after a fatal fuel tanker explosion was reported at Ntoaso on the Accra–Nsawam Highway in the Eastern Region, which killed three people and damaged property.

According to a report by 3News.com, Suhum Fire Service Public Relations Officer ADO1 Akonoh Opare Ohene Daniel explained that the blast occurred when residents tried to steal fuel from the overturned tanker.

“The residents in this area were siphoning the fuel, leading to the explosion. Traffic had already built up, and a female motorist who was trapped behind was burnt too. This is wrong. Residents along highways must stop engaging in such illegal activities,” he stated.

He therefore urged the public to refrain from such dangerous and illegal acts and allow experts to manage accident scenes at all times.

The 3News.com report added that Eyewitnesses revealed that the incident happened around 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, when a fuel tanker heading toward Kumasi reportedly overturned along the shoulder of the busy highway.

Several residents and motorcycle riders rushed to the scene to steal fuel from the overturned vehicle.

The situation quickly turned deadly when the tanker ignited, causing an explosion that claimed the lives of two men and one woman.

The blast also destroyed around five vehicles caught in traffic, including motorcycles believed to belong to the victims. Passengers and bystanders fled as flames spread across the area.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and National Ambulance Service responded swiftly.

Several individuals who sustained life-threatening injuries were rescued and taken to Nsawam Government Hospital, where they are receiving treatment. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Suhum Government Hospital morgue.

Eastern South Regional Police Commander DCOP George Ohene Bossman Boadi stated that police officers would remain at the scene to manage traffic while Fire Service personnel continue efforts to extinguish the flames.

Fire cases in Ghana since last year

A fierce fire ravaged seven container shops at Spintex, Accra, around the Marina, in the early hours of Saturday, February 7.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), it received a distress call at about 12:01 a.m. But was unable to respond immediately due to a faulty fire engine at the Kasapreko Fire Station, which is closest to the scene. As a result, the Tema Motorway Fire Engine was dispatched as the base pump.

In a Facebook post, the GNFS explained that it had to deploy three fire tenders from the Motorway, Tema Metro, and Tema Industrial Area Fire Stations to bring the blaze under control.

The firefighting team, led by ADO I Derrick Sarkodie, arrived at the scene at 12:19 a.m. to find the fire already at an advanced stage and spreading rapidly.

However, a coordinated and tactical operation by the firefighters brought the fire under control, and by 4:32 a.m., it had been completely extinguished.

The affected shops included seven container shops housing furniture, tailoring, and grocery businesses, along with their contents. No casualties were recorded.

Firefighters also reported that they prevented the fire from spreading to nearby structures, including Marina Mall, and successfully protected a car garage containing more than 35 vehicles, as well as several adjoining shops and nearby residential buildings.

The GNFS said investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.

According to reports, Greater Accra has recorded about 5 fire incidents, with the Spintex fire being the latest.

A fire outbreak on Monday evening, February 2, partially destroyed the girls’ dormitory at Pong Tamale Senior High School in northern Ghana.

According to reports, the fire originated from the washrooms and later spread through other parts, triggering panic among students.

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control. Pong Tamale Senior High School has become the latest second-cycle institution in northern Ghana to record a fire outbreak.

A fire broke out at Tolon Senior High School in the Northern Region on Monday, February 2, destroying parts of a dormitory. Nearly 900 female students were displaced following a fire at Tolon Senior High School in the region.

Okatakyie Afrifa was picked to assist fight against galamsey – Suame MP alleges

Member of Parliament for Suame, John Darko, has questioned the rationale behind the arrest of media personality Okatakyie Afrifa, alleging that national security operatives detained him under the guise of seeking his help in the fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Thursday, Mr. Darko criticized the approach taken by authorities, expressing concern over Afrifa’s treatment while in custody.

“What was the basis for arresting Okatakyie Afrifa?” he asked. “After threatening him with handcuffs, after arresting him, keeping him in national security custody for over three hours or four hours, we are told that he was supposed to help the national security to fight galamsey.

“What are you talking about? Are you asking a private citizen right now to come and help you fight galamsey when you are the national security institution that has all the available information, all the available tools to conduct your investigation? You come to a private citizen to help.”

The Suame legislator further argued that the explanation given for Afrifa’s detention lacked credibility, suggesting it was an afterthought meant to cover up an unjustified arrest.

“You know why they are saying this—because they realized that they had guffed so much. There was no reason to arrest the gentleman,” he asserted.

Calling for greater accountability from security agencies, Mr. Darko urged the public to push back against such actions to preserve justice and protect societal values.

“We should resist that… We need to do that to save our society,” he stated.

NPP is doing everything possible just to win power – Political analyst

A political analyst, Dr. Richard Amoako Baah has expressed deep concern regarding the recent resignation of Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who held the position since 2017.

The former head of the Political Science Department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) argues that the Member of Parliament for Suame was treated unfairly and allegedly pressured to step down by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2024 elections.

In an interview on Onua FM on February 22, 2024, Dr. Amoako Baah highlighted that the NPP’s actions indicate a disregard for the consequences of their decisions and a singular focus on gaining power, even if it means sacrificing party unity.

“They shouldn’t have treated him that way, even if they don’t agree with him. There is division in the party; their aim is just to win power, and they don’t care about who they step on in trying to achieve that power,” he said.

Expressing his concern about potential damage to the party’s image, Dr. Amoako Baah noted the absence of a proper send-off for someone who served in parliament for an extended period.

“As a member who has served for so long in parliament, all the parliamentarians would have met to say goodbye and give him that honour. But for this, he is being forced out because of present forces, and it is not right. For us, we are just concerned about the power,” Dr. Amoako Baah added.

“People want to see unity, but for us, it is worse. There is complete disunity, so there is a lot of uncertainty,” he added.

Arguing that projecting unity is crucial for winning public support, Dr. Amoako Baah suggested that the NPP’s current actions might send the wrong signal to voters.

“People want to see unity, but for us, it is worse. There is complete disunity, so there is a lot of uncertainty,” he added.

Exposed!: NPP party leaders requested for cars, lands from parliamentary primary aspirants

Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has dropped a bomb shell regarding events leading up to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries.

According to the NPP big wig who is also the Member of Parliament for the Suame Constituency, some party leaders requested for cars and lands as prerequisites for allowing party members to contest in Parliamentary primaries. Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu condemned this attitude and entreated the party to address such issues.

Speaking at a leadership engagement with the Parliamentary Press Corps on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, he noted that, “You have people coming to you to tell you that buy a car for us before we vote for you. Especially the leadership of the parties, they ask for cars before they allow you to contest, even land…we should be real.”

The Member of Parliament for Suame further recommended that political parties revisit such traditions, proposing a period of introspection to potentially phase out these requirements.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasized the importance of transitioning towards a system akin to those observed in mature democracies or broadening the scope of voting privileges to include all registered party members.

“My own proposition is that the parties should introspect and perhaps scrap this thing as it is in established democracies…If we want to continue to live with this communist arrangement then, we will perhaps have to go further downstream to enable every card-bearing member of the party to vote,” he said.

Furthermore, the Majority Leader warned against indifference among Members of Parliament who were unsuccessful in their Parliamentary primaries, underscoring the significance of remaining actively involved in parliamentary affairs.

Betting encouraging laziness amongst the youth – Majority Leader

The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has provided a rationale for the recently introduced 10 percent withholding tax on betting and lottery winnings.

During an interview with the media, the Suame MP passionately defended the decision made by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to impose a 10 percent withholding tax on earnings from bets and lottery games.

He asserted that the proliferation of betting companies has contributed to a culture of idleness among the youth of the country.

“I am not a proponent of betting. I don’t believe in luck. I believe in diligent work and effort to earn money. Let’s be earnest. Personally, I am against the introduction of betting in the country. I do not endorse it as it does not promote hard work.”

“As an individual, I refrain from participating in the lottery because I do not subscribe to the notion of luck. Work diligently so that God may bestow blessings upon your endeavors.”

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) revealed on Monday, August 7, that it would commence the implementation of a 10% withholding tax on all gross gaming winnings starting from August 15, 2023.

The GRA clarified that this withholding tax will be applied to profits gained following each victory, and the existing 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) rate on each stake will no longer be applicable.

The GRA stated that this new policy aligns with an amendment to the Income Tax Act 2023 (No.2), Act 1094.

Addressing the media during an engagement session, Edward Gyamerah, the Commissioner for the Domestic Tax Revenue Division at the GRA, warned that gaming companies failing to comply with the new policy will face penalties, including the revocation of their licenses.

“Effective August 15, we anticipate that when you make payments, you will withhold 10 percent for the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). As designated withholding agents, the responsibility lies with you to execute the withholding. Should you fail to fulfill this, considering our discussions with you and with the support of the gaming commission, be prepared for the possibility of having your licenses revoked,” cautioned the Commissioner for the Domestic Tax Revenue Division at GRA.

Majority Leader justifies 10% withholding tax on betting

Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, thinks that the 10% withholding tax imposed by the Ghana Revenue Authority on total earnings from gaming is reasonable.

He remarked that the tax, scheduled to be implemented on Tuesday, August 15, is a prudent policy decision.

In his view, gambling promotes idleness and dissuades people from putting in diligent effort.

In an interview with Kumasi-based Angel FM on Thursday, Suame MP exhorted the youth to work hard and stop gambling.

“I don’t believe in betting. I don’t believe in luck. I believe in hard work and sweat to get money. Let’s be serious. As for me, I’m against betting coming into the country. I don’t support it because it doesn’t encourage hard work.”

“As an individual, I don’t engage in the lottery because I don’t believe in that. I don’t believe in luck. Work hard so God will bless it.”

    Background

The implementation of a 10% withholding tax on all gross gaming winnings from August 15, 2023, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced.

According to the GRA, the withholding tax will be charged on profits accrued after each win and the existing 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) rate on each stake will no longer be charged.

The GRA said that the new policy is in line with an amendment to the Income Tax Act 2023 (No.2), Act 1094.

Commissioner for the Domestic Tax Revenue Division at the GRA, Edward Gyamerah, addressed a press briefing and said gaming companies that fail to comply with the new policy will face sanctions.

Such companies he added would have their licenses withdrawn.

“Come August 15, we expect that when you are making the payments, you will withhold 10 percent to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). As you have been appointed as withholding agents, the obligation is on you to withhold. If you fail to do that, with the interactions we had with you and with the support of the gaming commission, you can be assured that your licenses will be withdrawn,” he said.

Cecilia Dapaah saga: Majority leader defends keeping money in homes

The majority leader, who is the Member of Parliament for Suame, added that even though it might be ethically wrong for a minister to be keeping such an amount of money in her home, the laws of the country do not stop people from keeping money in their homes.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasised the importance of hearing the former minister’s perspective before passing any judgment.

“In Ghana now we are quick to condemn people as soon as their issues come up. We don’t listen to their side of the story. Doing this is not good for our governance process. We have to hear our sister’s side of the story before we make any judgment.

“There are some questions that have not been answered including whether she legitimately acquired the money; where the minister got the money from, and whether she has paid the required taxes.

“She has not violated any law of the country by not keeping the money in the bank if it is hers… there are no laws like that. But the government is working to create a cashless system so if a minister is keeping such an amount of money in her home, it would be like a pastor not living the gospel s/he preaches,” he said in Twi in a Neat FM interview.

Meanwhile, the former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources has been arrested by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

This was contained in a statement from the Office of the Special Prosecutor dated July 24, 2023.

This arrest comes in the wake of suspicions of corruption and corruption-related offences, revolving around the alleged theft of significant amounts of money and valuable items from her residence in Accra.

Dapaah’s resignation from her ministerial post, which occurred on July 22, 2023, set off a series of investigations into the reported theft that had caused shock and concern among the public.

Two of her house helps, Patience Botwe (18) and Sarah Agyei (30), were previously charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and five counts of stealing, following the alleged incidents between July and October 2022.

During this period, items including assorted clothes worth GHC95,000, handbags, perfumes, and jewellery valued at $95,000 were said to have been stolen from the former Minister’s residence in the Abelemkpe area of Accra. Patience Botwe was also accused of stealing six sets of kente cloth worth GHC90,000 and six sets of men’s suits valued at $3,000, which belonged to Dapaah’s husband. Furthermore, three other individuals, including Botwe’s current and former boyfriends and her father, are also facing charges for allegedly being involved in dishonestly receiving GHC1 million, GHC180,000, and GHC50,000, respectively.

The arrest by the Office of the Special Prosecutor indicates the gravity of the situation and the determination of authorities to investigate the alleged corruption thoroughly.

As of now, the OSP indicated Cecilia Dapaah is undergoing questioning by authorized officers of the OSP to ascertain the facts surrounding the case.

Majority Leader recounts how Ken Agyapong ‘saved’ Suame with GHS 200m

Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame has lauded the generous spirit of fellow lawmaker Kennedy Ohene Agyapong citing his assistance to the Suame Constituency when they were in dire straits.

The Majority Leader narrated how two first schools built in the Suame area came to fruition because of Ken’s support by way of an interest-free loan that he advanced to the constituency.

Speaking at a flagbearership campaign stop of Ken at Suame over the weekend, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said: “Many testify to the goodness that Ken Agyapong has done and continues to do. We the people of Suame have been a beneficiary of Agyapong’s generosity.”

He narrated how Suame had been given school projects from the central government but monies had yet to be disbursed at a time times were hard financially. The two schools were Nuru Islamic Basic School and a six-classroom Suame Methodist block.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu recalled selling his car to raise some money for the first project when funds dried up, he discussed the challenge with Ken, he told the gathering.

“He asked how much money was needed and I said two hundred million at the time but about 20,000 cedis today, the following morning Ken called me and advanced us the 200 million to put into the project.

“I gave 100 million to my chairman to start work, we were lucky to receive the funds for Nuru Islamic project so I asked my chairman to use that to continue the Methodist school project.

“I returned the first 100 million to Ken and later when other payments came in, I reimbursed him the other part. Without his intervention, we would have failed to complete the 6-classroom block,” he stressed.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is currently outgoing MP for Suame, being the longest serving lawmaker in the House, he is, however, supporting the presidential bid of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia in the New Patriotic Party race.

KMA Boss, Samuel Pyan, in an interview with JoyNews, said the government had already secured funding for the project.

He claims the contractors are on site.

“We have the contractor on site as we speak. They are working on some other roads that will be linked to the interchange but not the roundabout itself. There’s money for the project so we shouldn’t worry at all” he said.

But in an interview with a Kumasi-based radio station, Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu said the government was yet to secure a loan for the project after IMF negotiations.

“We are done with everything. The problem now is that this project isn’t sponsored by the government of Ghana, we are seeking a loan for it from abroad but the IMF is keeping the project on hold. We are sure we will get the money by August” he indicated.

Residents who had high hopes for the project were astonished.

There are concerns the project site has turned into a hideout for hooligans.

They want the government to fulfil its promise of completing the project before the 2024 General Election.

According to him, the 1st deputy speaker is not a leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) either in parliament or the party’s national executive and is at liberty to endorse any of the candidates who will be contesting in the party’s presidential primaries.

Speaking in an Oyerepa TV interview, on Thursday, April 27, 2023, the majority leader, who is also the Member of Parliament for Suame, added that, unlike Osei-Owusu (Joe Wise), he is not at liberty to endorse any of the presidential aspirants because he is a leader in parliament and it is his job to bring all the MPs together.

“I’m the majority leader in parliament and irrespective of the person who is picked to be the party’s presidential candidate, I have to galvanise support in parliament. It is just like asking the party’s chairman or the general secretary whom they support… it will be prejudicial.

“Joe Wise is the 1st deputy speaker but when you are talking about the leadership of the parliamentary caucuses, the deputy speakers are not included.

“He (Joe Wise) can express his opinion openly but some of us must be circumspect,” he said in Twi.

In an interview earlier in April, the first deputy speaker of parliament said that majority of NPP members of parliament are behind Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in his bid to become president.

Joe Wise said he is one of the over 100 MPs supporting the presidential bid of Dr Bawumia.

“Most of the NPP MPs at the last count were about 118 MPs and I am one of them. I speak for myself and my support for Bawumia, and I know over 100 NPP MPs also support Bawumia,” he told the morning show host of Kumasi-based Oyerepa TV, Kwesi Parker-Wilson.

  • We have the men: Most NPP aspirants can win 2024 elections – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

We have the men: Most NPP aspirants can win 2024 elections – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has emphasized the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ‘we have the men’ slogan with respect to the upcoming 2024 flagbearerhip race.

According to him, most of the aspirants who are rumoured to be interested or have openly declared their intentions have what it takes to represent the party and to ‘break the 8,’ i.e. win the 2024 elections.

In an interview with pro-NPP network Asaase Radio (January 12, 2023), the Member of Parliament for Suame said even though a number of aspirants are in the race, one name stood above all but that he wa refraining from mentioning it yet.

“I can say that many of them that I have assessed have the potential of helping us break the 8 [but] there may be a primo among them.

“In terms of competence and qualification, I can vouch for many of them who have come up, like [Vice-President Mahamudu] Bawumia, Alan Kyerematen, Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Boakye Agyarko … Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Agyepong, Kofi Konadu Apraku …” he said.

The comments by the MP, who also doubles as the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, comes on the back of two cabinet-level resignations in respect of Alan Kyeremayen and Owusu Afriyie Akoto, outgoing Ministers of Trade and Industry and Agriculture respectively.

The former resigned last week and has since announced his ambition to contest the NPP flagbearership. The latter’s resignation took place earlier this week and was accepted on Thursday, January 12.

Both the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP are expected to elect their flagbearers ahead of keenly-awaited 2024 elections.

Former president John Dramani Mahama is seen as a frontrunner to lead the NDC for a third successive bid as candidate.

In the case of the NPP, aside from Alan, Bawumia and the, former Minister of Agric, Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong are among some of the candidates expected to contest for the slot.

  • ‘I have never sponsored any candidate against you’ – Gabby tells Majority Leader

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has denied ever sponsoring a candidate within the governing New Patriotic Party to unseat the Majority Leader as a lawmaker for the Suame Constituency.

According to the NPP stalwart, he considers Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu a strong loyalist in the party and will never do such a thing to him.

The Suame MP, in an interview on Kumasi-based Sompa FM, accused the co-founder of the Danquah Institute of unsuccessfully sponsoring a candidate against him in the party’s parliamentary primaries leading to the 2016 elections.

“He wrote something for someone to go on his radio station [Asaase radio] and say that if I contest Suame seat again I will lose and that is why he is saying he won’t contest again. Gabby Otchere-Darko, have you contested an election before?” the Majority Leader asked.

“In 2016, these same people were hiding behind a candidate saying that if he wins the Suame primaries, he will lose the general election; then they sponsored a candidate against me and it didn’t work for them. I had the confidence of the President who, two days before the primaries said ‘no I want to come and speak to your [Suame] people’ but I told him to stop [because] I am in control of affairs…

“The President was very worried and he wanted to fly in the night to Suame but I had to tell him not to bother himself and God willing after the primaries those that Gabby Otchere-Darko and his people sponsored lost massively; their votes were not closer to what I had. I don’t know what Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko holds against me…,” Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated.

But Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko in a reply said on his Facebook timeline, November 15, “I have never sponsored any candidate against the Majority Leader for the Suame seat.

“I would never do such a thing to a person I considered a strong loyalist even within the NPP.”

Who does Gabby Otchere Darko think he is? What is his locus? – Kyei Mensah-Bonsu fumes.

  • OSP petitioned to probe alleged bribery attempts of MPs by businessman

Pressure group, OccupyGhana has petitioned the Special Prosecutor to investigate a supposed wealthy businessman, who allegedly attempted to bribe a group of MPs calling for the head of the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, and Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen.

In a letter addressed to the Special Prosecutor, OccupyGhana contended that the act is a potential corruption offense that ought to be probed by the Special Prosecutor for prosecution if established to be true.

“We have followed media reports from interviews by Joy FM with Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu (MP, Suame, Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs) and Andy Appiah-Kubi (MP, Asante Akim North), which have been widely circulated by other media portals,” the OccupyGhana statement said.

“In these interviews, the MPs alleged that an unnamed, wealthy businessman had attempted to bribe them. That would be an attempt to influence the conduct of MPs in the course of their official duties, a potential corruption offence that falls within the remit of your office,” the letter added.

    Below is the letter:

  • ‘Ken Must Go’ now a Majority Caucus agenda – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Majority Leader, has stated that the entire Majority Caucus in Parliament, now support calls for the dismissal of Ken Ofori-Atta, Finance Minister.

According to him, even though the issue started with over 90 NPP MPs who organised a press conference to demand the removal of the embattled minister else they boycott any government business in the House, the entire Majority Caucus now aligns with the position of the group.

The Suame MP speaking at a news conference on Thursday, November 3, 2022, explained, “even though the issue started with the group of 80 plus, the caucus meeting aligned with the position of that group, so it is no longer the cause of the 80 plus MPs. It is the agenda for the entire caucus and we are having some discussions on that.”

The Majority Leader who is also the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs had earlier stated on Accra-based Joy FM that there had been an attempt by a wealthy businessman to influence the MPs who organised the press conference to back down on their decision.

“I’m told on authority that some businessman came here and tried to do something. I was told that he came here and tried to mediate in his own way what he thinks the problem is…he was repelled by the people and told he was told not to involve himself. So he went away,” Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu told Joy News in an interview.

“With particular reference to the attempted bribery, it’s come before me. We’ll investigate if it is true and if it is true, establish the motive of that person. Sometimes, these things come up.

“You remember the issue of a minister who was nominated to appear before the vetting committee. There was an allegation that he had attempted to bribe some people or influence some people. Eventually, it turned out to be – I will not say falsehood – but an untruth,” he stated further.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had already appealed to the NPP MPs to allow Ken Ofori-Atta to stay in office until the IMF negotiations and the 2023 Budget statement is presented.

He made this appeal in a meeting with the MPs at the Jubilee House shortly after they held the October 25 press conference to demand the sacking of Mr. Ofori-Atta.

  • When I promise, I deliver’ – President Nana Akufo-Addo

The commencement of work on the Suame Interchange and Complementary Roads Project, Ghana’s second-largest road infrastructure, is in fulfilment of the Government’s pledge to work for the people, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has said.

“When I promise, I deliver,” he emphasised.

According to the President, his Administration was bent on providing to every region its fair share of the critical road infrastructure required to facilitate socio-economic activities.

Since assumption of office in 2017, the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government has put in measures to improve the statistics of good roads from 78, 000 kilometers to about 94, 000 kilometers, with the construction of the four-tier Pokuase Interchange being the most significant in terms of the magnitude of work and cost analysis.

Addressing a sod-cutting ceremony at the Suame Roundabout, in the Ashanti Region, for work to begin on the Interchange Project, the President tasked the contractors and Ministry of Roads and Highways to be diligent to ensure the successful completion of the Project as scheduled.

A concept note underpinning the Project says the road network in the Greater Kumasi area, in particular, comprises a ring road and spokes.

“Most of the intersections have exceeded their capacities and are experiencing severe congestion during the peak hours.

“The challenges of these intersections have been clearly identified in the Kumasi Transport Plans and the Suame Roundabout Intersection is the worst of all, experiencing delays and safety issues,” says the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

President Nana Akufo-Addo indicated that the intention was to upgrade the Suame Roundabout into a four-tier Interchange together with five other grade separated intersections.

Per the specifications of the Project, the job will be undertaken under two components – comprising the construction of a four-tier interchange at Suame, two overpasses at Abrepo Junction and Krofrom Junction.

    Exif_JPEG_420

The second component will see to the construction of three overpasses at Anomangye Junction, Magazine New Road Junction and Abusuakruwa Junction, as well as widening of the Offinso road into a dual carriage way, 15 kilometers local roads and improvement of selected intersections.

Component one of the project will be executed by Messrs. Rango Construction Company Limited in joint venture with Dizmar of Spain, while component two is constructed solely by the former.

Messrs. Associated Consultants Limited will be the supervising consultant on the project, with the Department of Urban Roads as the implementing agency under the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

President Nana Akufo-Addo advised the contractors to institute measures to address the anticipated traffic congestion that might come in the course of the execution of the Project.

This, he said, was necessary to alleviate the inconveniences that might be experienced by commuters of the road.

Other road projects inspected by the President, who was on a four-day working visit to the Ashanti Region, included Anwiankwanta-Obuasi Road and Santasi-Apire Road Projects.

  • Kumasi became ‘borla’ city after Kufuor left in 2008 – NAPO claims

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, alias NAPO, has restated why the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will forever remain the preferred party in the Ashanti Region.

He holds that it is often during the NPP’s era that the region known to be its electoral world bank gets needed development.

NAPO, while speaking at the flagging-off ceremony for work to begin on the Suame Interchange stressed that Asanteman had to be forever grateful to the party for its contributions to development.

“When Nana Addo speaks, people take him on, I want to tell all of you gathered here that if you need a government that will come and help Asanteman, it is the NPP.

“If God had allowed Nana Addo to succeed President Kufuor, Kumasi would have been known as the golden city. When that did not happen, we became known as borla city, there was refuse all over the place since Nana Addo came, have you seen the refuse?

“We shouldn’t show ingratitude, Asantes are grateful, let us not be ungrateful. Asante has good memories…,” he stated before adding: “it is based on this that we will continue to vote for the NPP till God descends from the heavens.

“I can say that anyone here who votes for the NDC does not mean well for Asanteman,” he added in a video clip sighted by GhanaWeb.

President John Agyekum Kufuor completed his second term in office in 2008 having taken office in 2000 from the late Jerry John Rawlings.

The election to replace Kufuor was between Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the late John Evans Atta-Mills. The latter contesting for the third consecutive time beat Akufo-Addo in a runoff vote.

  • It’s unfortunate violence is used as a tool to secure political attention -Prof Aning

Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Kwesi Aning, has decried the use of violence as a tool to draw the attention of government officials to address the pertinent social needs of citizens.

According to the Professor, Ghana is currently experiencing a political credibility crisis where citizens have lost faith in politicians due to their failure to deliver on their mandate. As a result, they tend to resort to violence to get their plights addressed, which he said was unfortunate.

The Professor also intimated that citizens perceive violence as a legitimate tool to secure the attention of political actors, since they tend to respond quickly to their needs when force is applied.

“Politics has been hallowed out to such an extent that those who govern have lost the respect of those who are governed,” he said on Saturday, July 23, 2022, on Newsfile.

He also mentioned that politicians themselves have glorified violence and tend to respond quickly to threats of, and actual acts of violence, which sends the signal to citizens that through violent means they can quickly get responses to their problems.

“When the language of violence has a direct correlation to politicians listening – first coming to power and even the threat or actual use of violence leads to politicians, government acting, then the citizenry understands and perceive violence as a legitimate tool for getting political and developmental results and that’s unfortunate,” he added.

His comment was part of discussions on the incident which happened in Suame, when Majority Leader and MP for the Constituency was hooted at by residents over deplorable roads.

On Friday, July 15, 2022 some residents  of the constituency mounted road blocks to protest the poor state of their roads. Some of the residents threw objects including sachet water at him.

“Away, away” the angry youth chanted.

Meanwhile, the MP has accused an NDC group in the community of instigating the youth against him.

  • Turn yourselves in Police to NDC supporters who stormed Suame police station

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has advised National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters who besieged the Suame Police Station to report themselves to police.

The command has given them until 9 am on Monday, October 26.

The persons stormed the police station on Saturday demanding the release of some of its members who were arrested in a police swoop.

The command claims the protesting supporters “attacked the Police officers on duty, verbally and physically,” though Citi News is yet to sight evidence to this effect.

They were also seen “in the video hitting the counter at the Charge Office.”

In a statement, it notes one Yakubu Tony Aidoo of the NDC after scrutinising video footage from the incident.

It said they were “seen in the video hitting the counter at the Charge Office.”

“The Command is therefore, advising the persons involved who besieged the Suame Police Station in their own interest to report to the Regional Police Command latest tomorrow 26th October, 2020 at 0900hrs to assist Police with investigation, without fail,” the statement added.

The command also acted on intelligence in respect of suspected whose names came up during the investigation and conducted swoops within the Metropolis.

It was these suspects that were taken to the Suame and Central Police Stations to assist the Police investigation.

Earlier on Sunday, NDC members also gathered at the Ashanti Regional Police Headquarters to demand the release of 10 party supporters who were picked up in the Asawase Constituency.

  • Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu cannot be unseated Minority Leader

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, said his Majority counterpart, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, will win the upcoming parliamentary elections, despite challenges from an independent contender for the Suame seat.

Mr George Prempeh, with links to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), is contesting as an independent candidate, determined to unseat Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the MP for Suame and Leader of Government Business.

Mr Prempeh was unable to contest the NPP primaries because the delegates endorsed the current Suame MP to go unopposed.

However, the Minority Leader, during a comment on the floor of Parliament, suggested that attempts to unseat the incumbent Suame MP would cut no ice.

He was speaking during the motion for the House to adopt the Business Statement for the Third Week.

Mr Haruna suggested that legislators must ensure there was balance between their presence in their constituencies and the work in the House, as they endeavoured to retain their seats in the next elections.

Mr Iddrisu called on the ministers of state and the Majority Leader to prioritise bills to the House rather than stampeding the House with bills in what he called “the November of the four-year mandate.”

He said bills like the National Ambulance Bill and the National Blood Transfusion Bill could wait in preference to critical bills of government like the Council of State and Anti Money Laundering bills.

Mr Iddrisu commended the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Gloria Akufo, who was present in the House, for writing to inform him on legislation she would want to be worked on.

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu announced that 60 bills were programmed for the meeting and that there had been a meeting for ministers to prioritise bills scheduled for the House.

He explained that the National Blood Transfusion Bill had come on board because of the exigencies of the time.

Meanwhile, Majority Chief Whip, Kwasi Ameyaw Cheremeh, reading the Business Statement on behalf of the Majority Leader, announced that the House would sit on Monday, October 26, 2020.
