A Nissan Frontier was engulfed in flames and completely destroyed after it veered off the road and collided with a tree at Brekumanso on the Asamankese-Suhum road.
The impact caused the vehicle to overturn into nearby bushes, sparking a fire that quickly spread to the surrounding area.
Firefighters from Asamankese, with support from their counterparts in Suhum and under the leadership of Station Officer II Aboagye Ernest, arrived promptly and managed to put out the blaze by 13:45 hours.
Three people, including the driver and a female passenger, sustained minor injuries and were taken to the Asamankese Government Hospital for medical attention.
Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey praised the firefighters for their swift intervention and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening emergency response services.
A fire outbreak at Amanase Zongo in Suhum on Monday, March 3, resulted in the destruction of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) meters and cables, officials have confirmed.
A five-member team from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station, led by STNO II Antwi Forson, swiftly responded to the emergency after receiving a distress call.
Arriving at the scene at 4:42 a.m., the crew found a high-tension fuse engulfed in flames. Firefighters promptly alerted ECG officials to disconnect the power supply before commencing firefighting operations. The fire was successfully brought under control by 5:01 a.m.
Investigations revealed that the blaze was triggered by overheating due to high-pressure electrical loads. Although the fire caused damage to the fuse, meters, and cables, the swift intervention of the fire service prevented the flames from spreading further.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant about electrical installations and report any anomalies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has raised alarms over a recent spike in road traffic accidents across Ghana.
The NRSA attributes the surge primarily to reckless driving, excessive speeding, and parental negligence.
Some of the recent incidents occurred at locations such as Obretema near Suhum, Atwedie near Juaso, East Legon, and Kwapia near Obuasi, on dates ranging from September 21 to October 14, 2024.
In a statement issued on October 17, the NRSA disclosed that these crashes have tragically led to 30 fatalities and numerous injuries within the past month.
Despite ongoing public awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement, the authority expressed disappointment that accidents continue to rise.
In response, the NRSA has announced it will conduct a multi-stakeholder investigation into the Kwapia crash under Regulation 8 of the National Road Safety Authority Regulations 2022 (L.I. 2468).
Preliminary investigations by both the NRSA and the Ghana Police Service have identified speeding, irresponsible behavior by parents, and reckless driving as the main causes behind these tragic events.
“Preliminary investigations by the Ghana Police Service and the NRSA revealed excessive speeding, parental irresponsibility, and reckless driving as the main contributing factors to the crashes.
“This notwithstanding, the NRSA intends to commission a multi-stakeholder investigation into the crash occurring in Kwapia near Obuasi, under Regulation 8 of the National Road Safety Authority Regulations 2022 (L.I.2468).”
Additionally, the NRSA issued a firm reminder to parents and guardians to respect the country’s legal driving age of 18, stressing the need for responsible behavior to prevent further accidents.
A dog played a pivotal role in saving a nine-bedroom house in Apedwa, Suhum Municipality, from being completely destroyed by fire.
The incident unfolded on September 7, when a distress call was received by the Suhum Municipal Fire Station at 0406 hours. A rapid response team led by ADO II Ofori Kingsley arrived on the scene by 0418 hours.
Upon arrival, the firefighters found that the blaze had already consumed the kitchen and had spread to two adjacent rooms. Thanks to the dog’s alert barking, which led to the early discovery of the fire, the homeowner, Mr. Godwill Attah, was able to call the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in time.
The firefighters promptly de-energized the building and worked diligently to control the fire, managing to bring it under control by 0425 hours and extinguishing it completely by 0440 hours.
While the fire caused significant damage to the kitchen and two bedrooms, the quick actions of both the homeowner and the firefighters helped salvage seven other rooms. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Mr. Attah expressed deep gratitude towards his dog, whose timely alert undoubtedly prevented a more catastrophic outcome. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Member of Parliament (MP) for Suhum Constituency in the Eastern Region, Kwadwo Asante, has officially announced his decision to contest the upcoming December 7th, 2024 general election as an independent candidate.
This move follows his defeat in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary earlier this year.
Asante, widely known by his moniker “Boafo,” lost the January 2024 NPP primary to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, also known as “Protozoa,” by a margin of 179 votes. Protozoa secured 496 votes against Asante’s 320, making him the new NPP parliamentary candidate for Suhum.
Despite his defeat, Asante’s supporters have rallied around him, insisting that he is the preferred choice for the constituency. Over the weekend, during a Health Walk at Suhum Amponsah Market, Asante addressed his supporters and officially declared his intention to run as an independent candidate. He cited the overwhelming support from his constituents as the driving force behind his decision.
“I am the helper this constituency needs,” Asante said, emphasizing that his decision to contest is in response to the calls from the people.
“My developmental agenda for Suhum cannot be truncated abruptly,” he added, reinforcing his commitment to continue his work for the area.
The announcement comes despite efforts by high-ranking NPP officials, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minister of Food and Agriculture Bryan Acheampong, to persuade Asante to stay within the party. Sources indicate that Asante had previously given assurances that he would not run independently, but the events of the past weekend have upended those plans.
Tensions within the Suhum NPP have been simmering since Asante’s victory in the 2020 general election, which saw him unseat then-MP Fredrick Opare Ansah in the party’s primary.
The rivalry between Asante’s followers and those of Protozoa has led to several confrontations, with some resulting in violence. The Suhum Constituency has a history of political unrest, dating back to the 2008 election cycle.
Asante has since launched his independent campaign under the slogan “Oboafo Toaso” (Oboafo Continue), distributing posters and T-shirts to solidify his position.
His supporters believe that his independent candidacy will resonate with the broader electorate, who view him as the true representative of Suhum’s interests.
The current Member of Parliament for Suhum Constituency and an NPP incumbent, Kwadwo Asante, has revealed that he will be running as an independent candidate in the December 7, 2024 general election.
Known by his supporters as Boafo, Mr Asante’s decision comes after he lost the NPP parliamentary primary in January 2024 to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, also known as Protozoa, by a margin of 179 votes.
Bekoe received 496 votes, while Asante garnered 320 votes, securing Bekoe’s position as the NPP’s candidate for Suhum.
Despite this setback, Asante’s supporters have been advocating for his independent candidacy, arguing that he remains the preferred choice among local voters. Over the weekend, during a Health Walk at the Suhum Amponsah Market, Asante officially announced his intention to run independently, motivated by the strong support he received from his constituents and the enthusiastic turnout at the event.
Sources within the NPP indicate that senior party members, including Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Bryan Acheampong, tried to convince Asante to withdraw his independent bid. However, these efforts were unsuccessful, leading to unexpected developments for the NPP in Suhum.
Asante, who previously defeated Fredrick Opare Ansah in the 2020 NPP primary with 394 votes to Ansah’s 272, remains determined to continue his political journey. He has launched his independent campaign with new promotional materials featuring the slogan “Oboafo Toaso” (Oboafo Continue), underscoring his commitment to ongoing development in Suhum.
The Suhum Constituency has a history of political tensions and violence, with past conflicts between rival factions dating back to the 2008 elections. Despite these challenges, Asante insists that his plans for the constituency should not be interrupted and remains focused on his independent run.
Former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has promised to transform Amasaman and Suhum into industrial centers.
He noted that it is impractical for all industries to be concentrated in Tema, as is currently the case.
John Dramani Mahama made this announcement during his tour of the Greater Accra Region, addressing Ghanaians about his plans.
“When everyone wants to build a factory he sends it to Tema. As a country, we can not put all our eggs in one basket like that. When I come to power I will ensure that Amasaman to Suhum becomes an industrial hub. Whoever wants to build a factory will be made to bring it to Amasaman. We will allow them to register for the 24-hour economy. If they register we will reduce taxes so that they will have enough money to expand their factories,” he said.
He assured residents of the area of the needed security saying “police posts will be built here and the youth will be employed in the Ghana Police Service to provide the needed security so that they don’t have to deal with armed robbers”.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken disciplinary action against two of its executives in the Suhum Constituency, suspending them for engaging in activities that go against the party’s principles.
The suspended executives are Samuel Baah, the Constituency Communication Officer, and Alhaji Bala Abubakar, the Deputy Constituency Nasara Coordinator.
The decision, made by the Constituency Executive Committee (CEC), was communicated in letters handed to the affected members.
According to a statement signed by Constituency Secretary Stephen A. Odame on Tuesday, August 13, the two executives were found guilty of actions that breached the NPP’s constitution, resulting in their suspension. These actions were described as divisive and harmful to the party’s unity.
The CEC outlined a series of misconducts, including the duo’s involvement in campaigning against the party’s officially chosen parliamentary candidate and organizing processions with anti-party messages.
They were also accused of presenting a petition to the incumbent Member of Parliament, urging him to run as an independent candidate, a move that directly contradicts the party’s rules.
In one instance, it was noted that after the Constituency Delegates’ Conference, which confirmed the party’s parliamentary candidate for the 2024 elections, Samuel Baah expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome. He reportedly set up a Public Address system on his car and travelled through various communities in the constituency, playing a song that implied opposition to the party’s decision.
Additionally, the CEC discovered that the two executives were behind a series of processions disguised as health walks, during which participants displayed placards with slogans like “No Oboafo, No Vote” and “Few delegates can’t decide for Suhum.”
These activities took place in multiple communities, culminating in a procession through the streets of Suhum on July 28, 2024. The procession ended with the delivery of a petition to the incumbent MP, Hon. Kwadjo Asante, urging him to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming election.
The CEC’s decision to suspend Baah and Abubakar was also influenced by their continued defiance, despite being removed from the party’s WhatsApp platforms as a sign of disapproval.
Their actions were ultimately deemed to violate key articles of the NPP Constitution, leading to their suspension from their positions and forfeiture of party membership.
The CEC was guided by Article 3(9)(1) of the NPP Constitution to come to this decision.
The said provision states: “A member of the Party, who stands as an independent candidate against the officially elected member of the party, or who joins or declares his or her support for another Political Party, or for an independent candidate, when the Party has sponsored a candidate in a general or by-elections, automatically forfeits his or her membership from the Party (emphasis provided)”.
Also, according to article 3(5)(A)(4) of the NPP Constitution (as amended) it is the right and duty of every member of the Party, “at all times to abide by and publicly uphold the decisions of the Party”.
The NPP has stressed the importance of discipline and unity as the 2024 elections approach, warning that any similar behaviour will not be tolerated within the party.
The current Member of Parliament for Suhum, Kwadjo Asante, is reportedly weighing the option of running as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
This consideration comes after his loss to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa, in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primary, as reported by Asaase Radio.
In a recent segment on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Kofi Tonto, an aide to NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, addressed the potential challenges posed by Asante’s possible independent run.
“We do have a small challenge in Suhum because the current MP, who lost the primary to Protozoa, wants to contest as an independent,” Tonto stated.
He noted that Suhum, a key NPP stronghold, could face complications if Asante proceeds with his independent bid.
Despite this potential obstacle, Tonto assured that efforts are being made to mend relations and reintegrate Asante into the NPP. Bryan Acheampong, the MP for Abetifi, is leading these reconciliation efforts.
“Discussions are ongoing to bring him back to the fold. Honourable Bryan Acheampong is leading that charge to work with him to bring him back. I think we’ve made great gains in terms of engagement with him, and we hope that he will come on board to solidify our base as we move forward,” Tonto added.
In the recent primary, Frank Asiedu Bekoe won with 496 votes, while Kwadjo Asante secured 320 votes in his attempt for re-election.
In the Suhum Municipality, fresh posters featuring Oboafo Kwadjo Asante, the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Suhum Constituency, have emerged.
Despite his loss in the last primaries, these posters suggest Asante’s intention to contest as an independent parliamentary candidate in the upcoming general election.
Emblazoned with the slogan “Maintain – Hon Oboafo Kwadjo Asante as MP. The King of Development,” the posters indicate Asante’s defiance against his party’s decision.
The appearance of these posters has generated considerable interest in the constituency, with branded materials like flyers and banners carrying messages such as “The Development King” and “Oboafo Toaso” circulating widely.
Moreover, vehicles showcasing his images suggest a well-organized campaign strategy.
Although Asante has yet to officially declare his intentions, sources close to him indicate that encouragement from market women and other community stakeholders has prompted him to consider this move.
His recent community development projects, including the construction of a new football pitch and bridge, have further enhanced his reputation as a committed public servant.
Meanwhile, the political atmosphere in Suhum remains tense, with Asante and the NPP’s new parliamentary candidate, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, engaging in separate activities within the constituency.
This has prompted calls from concerned party members for leadership intervention to prevent further escalation.

Kwasi Owusu Twumasi, spokesperson for the late Deputy Minister of Finance and MP for Ejisu, John Kumah, has clarified that the MP passed away at the Suhum Government Hospital, not in Germany as some reports suggested.
Contrary to speculations that Kumah died in Germany, Twumasi explained in an interview with Accra FM that the MP was in the process of traveling to Germany for medical treatment but, unfortunately, succumbed to his ailment at the Suhum Government Hospital on Thursday, March 7, 2024.
Reports indicate that Kumah had visited his constituency in the Ashanti Region for the independence anniversary on March 6.
Mr Twumasi disclosed that the late MP had been unwell for some time, experiencing difficulty walking.
On March 6, doctors visited Mr Kumah at his residence in Ejisu, and due to the worsening of his health, plans were made to transfer him to Accra.
However, on the way to the airport for medical evacuation to Germany, they had to divert to Suhum Hospital as his condition deteriorated, leading to his unfortunate passing.
“We realised that he couldn’t walk properly and that was what drew our attention to getting him medical attention. Doctors came to his aid yesterday (March 6), but because his health was getting worse, he needed to bring him to Accra. “His office had made arrangements for him to be flown out of the country to Amsterdam and then transit to Germany this evening. So we began the journey in an ambulance from Ejisu, together with his wife. “When we got to Suhum, we had to divert to the hospital because his ailment was getting worse, and unfortunately, he passed on,” he stated.

Five robbers, who were on foot, carried out the attack at approximately 6:43 p.m., taking advantage of rainy weather. They entered the fuel station’s store and confronted the security guard, Kwasi Agbeti, who was commonly known as “Killer.”
The assailants resorted to physically assaulting Agbeti with sticks, and when he attempted to seek refuge away from the store, they shot him at point-blank range.
Additionally, they shot the fuel station supervisor in his office and absconded with an undisclosed sum of money. The robbers also targeted a tanker driver who had just arrived to unload fuel, stealing his mobile phone and GH¢1000.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Party School would be dispersed across the various regions to train and reorient branch and constituency executives on the principles and history of the party, according to former president John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking at a campaign event in Suhum in the Eastern Region on Wednesday, Mr. Mahama who is expected to lead his party to the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections said, “it is not enough to say you are an NDC executive. You must understand what the party stands for.”
Mr. Mahama says because the NDC’s 2024 campaign will be anchored around the party’s branch executives across the country, it will require that they are not only resourced to carry out an effective campaign but also equipped with continuous training.
“We will therefore send all branch and constituency executives to the Party school to learn about the party, our ideology, its origins, Jerry Rawlings and about the Revolution, and the party constitution.”
According to Mr. Mahama, the plan is to decentralize the operations of the Party School into the regions, adding that the training will also focus on the functions of the executives, the NDC’s policies, campaigning, voter mobilization and canvassing among others.
The former president is on a three-day campaign tour of the Eastern Region. The ‘Building the Ghana we want Together’ tour is visiting 31 out of the 33 constituencies of the region in this phase of the campaign.
He has visited 7 other regions and is expected to receive an overwhelming endorsement from the party’s delegates to the May 13, 2023, presidential primaries.
The regional director of NADMO, Kwame Appiah Koduah, said officials have intensified their efforts to find the missing persons.

“Six persons are still missing,” Koduah said at the International Day For Disaster Risk Reduction summit in Suhum on Thursday. “It is quite unclear and so we have commissioned people to look into the river and look for the dead bodies.”
“Now that we are celebrating world disaster reduction day here in Suhum we are taking account of what has happened to us as a region.”
At least five people were confirmed dead early this month in the Eastern Region after torrential rains.
River Densu breaks its banks
Meanwhile, close to 2,000 residents of Nsawam, also in the Eastern Region, have been made homeless after floods swept away their homes.
The River Densu overflowed its banks after the downpour, forcing residents of the area to abandon their houses, livestock, and other property.
The zongo community was worst affected, including areas such as Gyankrom, Lanteh, Adoagyiri, and the main Nsawam lorry station.
The retreat was designed to help the party’s patrons, members, disciplinary committee, council of elders, and constituency executives and coordinators build their relationships with one another and the party as a whole moving ahead.
The Suhum congressman spoke to the members and praised the advancements his group has made since he was elected.
The Regional Secretary of NPP, Mr. Kofi Osei-Adjei who chaired the retreat educated the party members on the need to hold themselves in togetherness to win 2024.
He spoke on how the government was poised and committed to fulfilling its promises to promote development.
Mr Osei Adjei added that the regional party was ready to give adequate support and resources to each constituency to prepare the party ahead.
In his part, Constituency chairman, Frederick Ofosu said the retreat was very necessary and came at the time when the party had restructured its base from polling stations to the regional level. He said it will help the new executives to abreast themselves with the party’s constitution.
“As a political party we have gone through various elections from polling stations, electoral area, constituency, and all appointments have been done. Now we have new executives and even the old executives need to sharpen their tools as we approach the 2024 elections,” he said.
“When we continues this way, we will break the eight, this is one of the warm-ups and refreshing courses as well as strategies we are adopting. We are working towards breaking the eight so that the NDC party will realize that indeed we put in more effort to break the eight not just by words,” he added.
The Member of Parliament for the Suhum constituency, Oboafo Kwadjo Asante, has reiterated his commitment to fulfill promises made to constituents to pursue the developmental agenda of the constituency.
He said this during his sod cutting ceremony on Friday, January 14, 2022, in fulfilment of one of his promises made to nananom, the local council of churches, the Muslim community, and the butchers association to build an ultra-modern abattoir to befit the status of the constituency.
The construction of the new abattoir which is solely funded by the Suhum MP’s personal coffers is an urgent response to the distress call on him to come to the aid of the constituency.
“During my campaign, my attention was drawn to the bad state of the Suhum abattoir. The local council of churches was first to draw my attention, followed by Nananom, then the Butchers Association and later the Muslim community. The call was then coming from diverse groups which means indeed it is the need of the people and in that regards we need to respond to the distress call of the people,” Oboafo Kwadjo Asante said.
Oboafo Kwadjo Asante in his one year as MP has embarked on numerous projects across almost every sector; education, employment, sports, roads, security, electrification, communication, social interventions, health and sanitation, for which he has received C=commendation from many.
The fulfilment of his promise to construct an ultra-modern abattoir for the constituency, has received lots of praises from constituents and a trust reposed in him.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will on Friday morning commission the Suhum overpass on the main Accra-Kumasi Highway in the Eastern Region.
The project, including the overpass and the Apedwa Junction to Nsawam dual carriage road, funded by the Government of Ghana was first awarded to a Chinese Construction company, CWE- China International Water and Electricity in 2008 for GH¢150 million, to be completed in 3 years by the Kufuor administration.
But the project was abandoned by the Mills-Mahama administration during their term in office.
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako Atta two years ago attempted to commission the overhead but the residents in Suhum protested and it was halted.
Their concerns were about their safety, especially that of their children who cross the road on a daily basis to and from school.
The residents noted that there were no speed ramps, no streetlights, no reflectors and no pedestrian footbridge at the intercession to guarantee their safety.
In an efforts to complete the project, a sod-cutting ceremony took place last year to complete the second lane of the 32-kilometre Kwafokrom-Apedwa section of the Accra-Kumasi highway.
The GH¢333 million project undertaken by China International Water and Electric Corporation is expected to be completed within this year.
So far, the project is almost at its completion stage as the contractors have started laying asphalt on the second phase which would soon be opened for the free flow of traffic.
The Minister for Roads & Highways, Kwesi Amoako-Atta, who cut the sod at Suhum-New Station, reiterated that President Akufo-Addo had taken a bold decision adding that massive road projects would be seen at the end of his first term in office.
He pointed out that the Accra-Kumasi dual carriageway was originally scheduled to be completed within 36 months after ex-President Agyekum Kufuor cut the sod in 2008, however, after 10 years, the project was yet to be completed.
Mr Amoako-Atta emphasized that governance is continual and erstwhile projects should be continued even when there is a change of government.
After the commissioning of the overhead which the contractors have given the government the green light, the Road Minister will also embark on a tour and inspects some of the ongoing roads projects in the Region.
