The money played a role – Dede Ayew on move to join Swansea City

Andre Ayew, the captain of the Black Stars, has opened up about his move to Swansea in 2015, expressing satisfaction with his decision.

Ayew’s introduction to the Premier League with Swansea was highly successful, marked by an instant impact as he scored a debut goal against Chelsea and was honored as the Premier League’s Player of the Month in his first month at the club.

After his stint with Swansea, Ayew made a transfer to West Ham for a then-record fee of £20.5 million.

When reflecting on his decision to join Swansea in 2015, Ayew mentioned financial considerations as one of the factors influencing his choice.

“In France, we didn’t really know about Swansea. Some bigger clubs showed interest, but they didn’t play the same style of football. I had a crucial role to play, and the financial aspect also played a part.

For me, it was the perfect decision. And as soon as I arrived, I was recognised as the Premier League’s best player for the month.”

After eight years since his transfer to Swansea, Ayew, now a player for Le Havre in Ligue 1, has been recognized as the Player of the Month for February by his current club.

  • Swansea Crown Court jails man for life for gruesomely killing 77-year-old wife

Swansea Crown Court jails man for life for gruesomely killing 77-year-old wife

An 80-year-old retired engineer received a life sentence today for the murder of his wife, following his confession to an affair and secret lovechild during their 53-year marriage.

David Clarke, a church-goer, confessed to fatally battering his unsuspecting wife, Helen, 77, with a hammer and setting her on fire just days after revealing his betrayal. This revelation deeply devastated Mrs. Clarke, described as a ‘doting granny’, especially as the affair involved a woman she considered a friend.

The couple’s relationship took a dark turn after they traveled to Australia to meet Clarke’s former lover and her family. Upon returning to their cottage on the Gower Peninsula, tensions escalated, leading to arguments and physical altercations.

Four days later, Clarke texted family members, professing his love for them, before embarking on what seemed like an innocent morning drive with his wife. However, during the journey, Clarke stopped the car, brutally attacked his wheelchair-bound wife with a lump hammer, and then set her ablaze with paraffin inside their Honda Civic.

Despite a passer-by’s attempt to intervene, Clarke drove off, eventually crashing into a hedge as flames engulfed the car. Fortunately, Mrs. Clarke managed to inform firefighters about her husband’s culpability before succumbing to her injuries.

Clarke, a former international pistol-shooting champion and father of four, will now spend the rest of his life behind bars for this heinous crime, committed on September 22 of the previous year.

‘He hit me twice with a sledge hammer, covered me in paraffin and set me on fire,’ she said.

She was taken to hospital where she tragically died from her injuries two days later.

Questioned in hospital about a bruise on his head, the court heard Clarke told a paramedic: ‘My wife is not the forgiving kind.

‘We have been married 53 years, I had an affair 50 years ago she only found out a few days ago.’

Speaking later of the attack on phone from prison, Clarke told his son he ‘hit her with the hammer to make her go unconscious but she just wouldn’t go out.’

Mrs. Clarke suffered extensive burns across her body and sustained nine head wounds from the hammer blows, with medical professionals informing her family that her injuries were ‘unsurvivable’.

During the hearing, it was revealed that Clarke had engaged in an affair with a woman identified only as ‘L’ – a friend of Mrs. Clarke – while the couple resided in Zambia.

In 2003, while living in Zimbabwe, Clarke disclosed the affair and the existence of his secret daughter to his son, David Clarke Junior, instructing him not to divulge this information to his mother.

Mr Jones said: ‘He asked David Clarke Jnr to go for a drive with him, and during the drive the defendant started to cry and informed his son he had an affair with a woman in Zambia – a family friend referred to as ‘L’ – and he believed he had a daughter as a result of that affair.’

The son ‘believed there was no good that could come from his mother knowing’, Mr Jones said, although he did tell his own wife.

  • Managerless Swansea gets a draw thanks to Liam Cullen’s stoppage-time free-kick

Managerless Swansea gets a draw thanks to Liam Cullen’s stoppage-time free-kick

    Liam Cullen’s stoppage-time free-kick earned managerless Swansea a 2-2 draw at Coventry.

The Swans had earlier been ahead through Liam Walsh’s first goal in almost four years, before Haji Wright and Ellis Simms put Coventry 2-1 in front.

Swansea had been thrashed 5-0 by former head coach Russell Martin and Southampton on Boxing Day, but Cullen fired in a last-gasp set-piece to give his side a hard-fought point.

Former Coventry loanee Walsh put Swansea ahead in the seventh minute after he latched onto a poor touch from Jamie Allen and picked out the bottom corner, his first strike since scoring for the Sky Blues in January 2020.

It was just the ninth goal that Coventry had conceded at home this season.

They were ahead for just three minutes before Wright was played in by former Swansea loanee Kasey Palmer.

The American was confronted by Bashir Humphreys, but shifted the ball onto his left foot before arrowing his effort into the far corner beyond Carl Rushworth.

Palmer’s powerful effort was then tipped over by Rushworth in the Swansea goal before his free-kick cleared the crossbar.

Swansea had been without a permanent boss since December 4 and interim head coach Alan Sheehan handed a senior debut to 17-year-old Sam Palmer, who almost teed up Yannick Bolasie to put the Swans ahead but he could only lift over the bar with his outstretched right foot from close range.

Walsh also came close to putting Swansea ahead when he forced Brad Collins to palm away his free-kick.

Japan international Tatsuhiro Sakamoto scored a brace in Coventry’s 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Boxing Day and saw his effort blocked on the line following a clever corner routine as Coventry looked to get their noses in front.

Simms had been introduced as a substitute and scored his first goal at home for Coventry to put the hosts ahead with 25 minutes remaining.

Callum O’Hare picked out Wright at the back post and his looping header looked goalbound before Simms poked in to net his first goal since September when the former Everton striker netted a brace against QPR at Loftus Road.

Cullen had also been introduced from the bench and stepped up in the third minute of added time to whip his free-kick into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, extending Swansea’s unbeaten run against the Sky Blues to 17 matches, dating back to 1981.

  • Swansea continue derby dominance with victory over 10-man Cardiff

Swansea maintained their south Wales derby dominance as a 2-0 victory over 10-man Cardiff steered them into the top four of the Sky Bet Championship.

Ollie Cooper and Michael Obafemi scored either side of the interval to secure Swansea a sixth win in eight derby meetings, with Cardiff claiming just one victory in that time.

Cooper’s strike was particularly sweet for the fast-maturing midfielder who was rejected by Cardiff – the club his father Kevin played for between 2005 and 2008 – after having several trials in the Welsh capital.

Cardiff’s cause was severely hampered by playing with 10 men for 83 minutes after Callum Robinson was sent off for violent conduct.

Robinson collected a first career red card for stupidly reacting to Ben Cabango nudging him firmly from behind by throwing the ball into the face of the Wales defender.

Bluebirds boss Mark Hudson had spoken about playing with passion after their poor run of results in this fixture, but Robinson clearly overstepped the mark and could have no complaints over being banished.

Swansea took their time to make the most of the extra man, although Obafemi wasted a gilt-edged opportunity after Cooper and Luke Cundle had unlocked the visitors’ defence.

Tom Sang’s sidefoot volley from 20 yards forced Steven Benda into a flying save, but Cardiff could not prevent the tide of white-shirted attacks coming their way.

Swansea were denied a clear penalty after 34 minutes when Cedric Kipre punched away Matty Sorinola’s cross.

It was a blatant offence but Darren Bond waved play on, much to the disgust of incensed home players who had surrounded the referee.

Swansea’s sense of injustice was still simmering as Cundle pounced on Niels Nkounkou’s poor clearance.

Cundle was halted before the ball ran loose to Cooper, who curled it past the helpless Ryan Allsop and over the line off the crossbar for his third goal in four games.

Obafemi guided wide and Cooper miscued Joel Latibeaudiere’s superb cross with Swansea looking to put the game beyond Cardiff before half-time.

Harry Darling and Callum O’Dowda clashed and were cautioned as tempers rose again after the restart.

Swansea’s patient approach was almost rewarded as Obafemi turned sharply to force a fine save from Allsop.

The home side’s bookings count swelled with Obafemi and Cundle punished, and substitute Mark Harris headed over as Cardiff showed signs they were still in the contest.

But Obafemi, who scored twice in a 4-0 win at Cardiff in April, settled the issue after 67 minutes by striding on to Matt Grimes’ delightful pass and picking his spot.

It rubber-stamped Swansea’s seventh win in nine games and made it 15 goals in the last eight derbies compared to Cardiff’s one.

  • Swansea players to stop taking the knee

Former Swansea City player Yan Dhanda (right) takes a knee before a game against Reading in 2021

Swansea City’s players will no longer take the knee before games this season, the club has confirmed.

The practice of taking the knee before matches became widespread in 2020 as a statement against racism following the murder of George Floyd in the US.

Swansea have taken the knee before every game since and said the decision to stop was “not taken lightly.”

The club said “discrimination of any nature is abhorrent and has no place in football or society. “

“We remain firmly in support of what taking the knee stands for and represents,” a statement said.

Where does ‘taking a knee’ come from?

“Taking the knee has undoubtedly helped to raise awareness and encourage conversations about how to remove racism from the game we all love.

“But we feel we want to take responsibility as a group and find alternative ways to show our commitment to inclusion and diversity, and we feel that needs to run deeper than taking the knee each time we play.”

The club added that it was committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and would continue to work alongside the Swansea City AFC Foundation in promoting the message “that football, and sport in general, is for everyone.”

Swansea said it had “first-hand experience of the devastating impact discriminatory abuse” can have with several of their players being targeted for racial abuse on social media.

Ben Cabango as well as former Swansea players Jamal Lowe and Yan Dhanda were racially abused on social media.

In April 2021 the club announced a week-long social media boycott on all platforms to combat abuse and discrimination, which was followed by a number of other clubs and organizations.

  • Andre Ayew seals Swansea City victory with 14th Championship goal of the season

Andre Ayew scored his 14th goal in the Championship this season to seal Swansea City’s 2-1 victory against Sheffield Wednesday.

The 30-year-old stepped forward to double the hosts lead at the Liberty Stadium with his 66th-minute strike from the penalty spot, 10 minutes after Rhian Brewster opened the scoring.

Ayew who has played 39 Championship games for the Swans in this campaign, was on parade from start to finish, to help them return to winning ways after settling for a 1-1 draw against Millwall on Wednesday and conceding a 1-0 loss against bottom-placed Luton Town last Saturday.

In the encounter, the Ghana international registered the most shots on target (3) and he also completed the most dribbles (3) as Swansea City secured their 15th league win of the season.

The victory shot Steve Cooper’s men to eighth in the Championship table with 60 points from 40 games, to boost their chances of sealing a play-off spot as they are four points behind sixth-placed Cardiff City.

Ayew is currently enjoying his best scoring form in a league season in his career with a contribution of 14 goals and six assists in the English second division so far.

He joined Swansea City from West Ham United in 2018 and his three-year contract at the Liberty Stadium is expected to expire in June 2021.

Following the Swans’ relegation from the Premier League in 2017-18, Ayew moved to the Turkish Super Lig to join Fenerbahce on a season-long loan for top-flight football.

During his stay in Turkey, the Black Stars captain scored five goals in 38 games for the Yellow-Navy Blues.

Ayew will be aiming to boost Swansea City’s push for the play-off when they visit Birmingham City for their next Championship fixture on Wednesday before hosting league leaders Leeds United on July 12.
