The Parliamentary Joint Select Committee on Local Government, Science, Environment and Technology, Finance and Works and Housing on Tuesday, paid a working visit to the Takoradi market circle to inspect the progress of the redevelopment of the Takoradi Market.

The Chairman of the committee, Mr Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi, commended the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly for the efforts in securing a temporary site for traders to be relocated to pave the way for construction works to begin on the new market.

He commended the management of the project for their resourceful management of waste at the market centres and urged them to continue to improve upon their good work.

Mr Gyamfi said the provision of a temporary site for traders would make things easier unlike during the construction of the ultra-modern Kejetia market where traders were not properly relocated.

He said preparations done so far would pave way for a smooth transition from the temporary allocated market site when the construction of the new market is completed within the 30 calendar months duration.

  • Atmosphere amidst School Reopening In Takoradi

Schools in Takoradi have reopened followed a directive by President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to ensure that all students from nursery through to tertiary resumed academic work in January 2021, after schools were closed down in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Visit by the GNA to Dunwell Methodist Academy, Reverend Dunwell Grant Methodist and Reverend Dunwell Kindergarten, Good Shepherd Anglican Primary and Golden Gate Adventist Preparatory and JHS in the Western Region showed full compliance with the directive.

In an interview with Mr. Alex K.Dadzie, the Acting Headteacher for Dunwell Methodist Academy told the GNA that, the only challenge they had was that the children often pulled their masks down their chin but their teachers had been told to keep their eyes on them.

He said about 100 parents had come to seek for admission but they were yet to admit new students. With team’s observation, all the COVID-19 safety protocols were being observed.

At Rev Dunwell Methodist and Dunwell Grant Methodist, Madam Grace Acquaye told the GNA that, many of the students had only one nose mask which she stressed was not helpful because it could get torn so she pleaded with parents to get an extra nose mask for their wards. All the COVID- 19 protocols were being observed.

She noted that due to the large numbers that reported to school on the first day, some of the pupils could not get seats to sit since they were observing physical distancing and gave the assurance that the situation would improve as the days go by.

The GNA realized admission was in progress at many of the schools the team visited and many parents had come for the admission letters to enrol their children in school.

The GNA team realised some children were happy to see their friends after a long stay at home and others too said they were happy to be in school because of the boredom at home.

  • Majority Leader worried over effect of galamsey on Takoradi Water Expansion Project

The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has bemoaned the resurgence of illegal mining activities on Rivers Offin and Pra and its threat to the Secondi-Takoradi Water Supply Rehabilitation and Expansion Project.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament during a debate on a loan agreement for the Project, the Majority Leader demanded urgent steps from the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation to halt mining activities on Rivers Pra and Offin.

“I will strongly urge the Minister for Water Resources to have second look and… we have to be much more determined to stop mining operations in both the Offin and Pra River so the integrity of the waters can be attested to.”

“Other than that Mr. Speaker, I am afraid of this venture,” Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu warned.

Parliament on Tuesday approved two separate loans of over € 81 million to finance the Secondi-Takoradi Water Supply Rehabilitation and Expansion Project.

The loans are an Oeke-Backed agreement amounting to € 70,733,432 and commercial loan amounting to € 10,500,000 between Ghana represented by Ministry of Finance and Commerzbank Aktingesellschaft.

The credit facility is to secure funding for the implementation of the project, which includes; the construction of an intake, a new water treatment plant with its ancillary structure, transmission and distribution pipelines, service reservoirs, standpipes and house connection.

The beneficiary communities include: Takoradi, Effiakuma, KwesimintsimKojokrom, West Tanokrom, Anaji, Sekondi, New Takoradi, Essikado, Apremdo, Keikum, Ntankoful, Ngyyiresia, East Tanokrom, Effia Village and Fijai.

The project is expected to be completed in 40 months after commencement.

The Pra and Offin rivers are among the worst hit by illegal mining activities.

Despite earlier aggression in 2017 from the Akufo-Addo administration to end the illegal mining, the country has made minimal gains on that front.

As recently as July 2020, the Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce Operation Vanguard confiscated and destroyed some mining equipment belonging to illegal miners at Dunkwa On-Offin in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality in the Central Region.

  • Aviation Minister inspects expansion of airport facility in Takoradi

The Minister of Aviation, Mr Kofi Adda has stated that the Western Region can not be overlooked when it comes to aviation since it houses the oil and gas industry and a training center for pilots.

He disclosed that his Ministry also has “its eyes on a land it has acquired at Kajebil near Takoradi for the construction of an international airport which is now at the feasibility study stage pending approval from the Ministry of Finance”.

He said the aviation sector has been recognised by the President as a very important element of economic development hence, the move to expand the sector by developing infrastructure and improving services to make sure that business development and tourism are supported to enhance the economic lives of the people.

The Minister who was on a working visit to the Central and Western Regions to ascertain the potentials the two regions have in the aviation space indicated that the Takoradi Airport was so important because it serves the oil and gas industry as well as the mining industry.

He further stated that his Ministry was in consultation with the Ministry of Finance to see how best local air travel fares could be reduced to make it affordable to enable more Ghanaians to do quick business.

He hinted that many more airlines have shown interest and would soon take off to bring competition and to have airfares reduced so that more Ghanaians can afford.

According to him, though the renovation work at the Takoradi airport was being done solely by the Ghana Airforce, the Ministry of Aviation has been able to identify the items that are needed to bring efficient gadgets to do civil works among others.

He said the Aviation Ministry was liaising with the Ministry of Finance to raise some money to support them since the rehabilitation and reconfiguration for the arrival and departure halls would be expanded to bring comfort to passengers.

Air Vice-Marshal Frank Hanson, Chief of Air Staff said the Takoradi Airport has been in existence for over sixty years and has since been the bedrock of aviation in Ghana.

He noted that expanding its operations would enable it to take more domestic airlines to open the market for competition which would help beat down airfares for more patrons.

The Western Regional Minister, Mr Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah noted with concern that the absence of a civilian airport hampers air transport business in the region, hence the expansion was necessary to position the Airforce Base to be able to give more room to civilian passengers till the Region gets an alternative airport.

He explained that the Ghana Airforce was already on the Board of the Civil Aviation Authority and could therefore do a proper collaboration to augment the operations of the airport by giving the needed support to improve on its operations.

The renovation which is being done by the TonyDollyken Construction Limited started in June this year and is expected to be completed in December this year.

Renovation works include the renovation of the Airport Terminal building, expansion of Arrival/Departure Hall, and the oil and gas facility.

  • Christians in Takoradi divided over reopening of churches

A cross-section of people in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) of the Western Region have welcomed the decision of the Government to lift the ban on mass gathering permitting a limit of 100 people at a time.

Those expressing their appreciation are happy that church services can go on within the specific guidelines put in place to limits the spread of the COVID-19.

It would be recalled that President Nana Akufo-Addo on March 15, ordered the closure of all schools and universities and the suspension of all public gatherings for four weeks as a means to stem the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A cross-section of the Christians who spoke to the Ghana News Agency in an interview argued that the church was noted to maintain discipline in its services and can best adhere to the social distancing and other protocols.

According to them, the order to close the churches turned out to be the most difficult one for them to obey as it was having a big impact on them because communal prayer and the discipline of the religious calendar were central to their lives.

Prophet Godlove Agbemodzi, General Overseer of the Christ Miracle Power Church (CMPC), said when the announcement on the closure was first made, he was surprised, in that it was hard to imagine life without religious services for some.

He lamented that life had not been easy for the past 10 weeks that he had been in the house without taking offerings.

Other pastors the GNA spoke to said they have been in great distress since the services were their means of livelihood.

President Nana Akufo-Addo in his address to the nation on 31 May, 2020, to provide an update on COVID-19 pandemic, announced that religious services could commence with service lasting for an hour per session and the congregation should be limited to 100 people at a time.

However, some people were of the view that looking at the prescribed modalities given them by the Ministry of Religious Affairs to follow, the elite and well-endowed churches could follow, but the smaller ones and those in the villages or peri-urban communities may not be able to bear the cost that comes with it.

According to the critics, churches in the rural communities before the closure were suffering from low incomes from tithes and offerings, which left some pastors no choice than to run prayer sessions frequently to increase their revenue.

Madam Mary Agidi said evidence from other nations have proven that large gatherings provided the most fertile grounds for the spread of the virus, and so there was the need to refrain from such gatherings in order to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

“Considering the all-night services, the miracle and the anointing services with people falling under the power of the anointing and the modalities to observe social distancing, I will not show up for some time at my church unless the pandemic is curbed,” she stated.

She, therefore, advised churches to adopt digital platforms for services like payment of tithes and offering through mobile money platforms while those who can afford should offer online streaming services.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the Fire Glory Church at Tanokrom, a suburb of Takoradi, said they would hold two services on Sunday with the first starting at 7 am to 8.30 am while the second begins at 9 am to 10.30.

They further indicated that they would be holding a five-day Holy Spirit Revival service from Monday 8 to 12 June 2020.

  • Prices of basic foodstuff see marginal decrease in Takoradi

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected various sectors of the economy but prices of some basic foodstuff have seen some marginal reductions in the Takoradi Market Circle.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency to the business district of the Metropolis revealed that a tuber of yam which was sold for GHC 10.00 is now going for less than GHC 9.00 while a bigger bunch of plantain which was sold for GHC30.00 in January this year is now going for about GHC 25.

A bag of rice sold at GHC130.00 is now Ghc127.00 while a sack of cassava which was sold for GHC 100 is now being sold at GHC 98.00.

Madam Baby Acquah, a 45-year-old plantain seller, said the prices of foodstuff often sees a drastic reduction during the harvesting period where there is plenty of food in the system.

She said we are currently in the lean season and because of the COVID 19 pandemic, they have decided to make marginal reductions so that everyone would able to cook at least one meal day.

“We are all in Ghana and we hear day-in-day out individuals, philanthropists, organizations and churches donating to help fight COVID-19, so what we can also do is to reduce the prices of our foodstuffs in these trying times,” she said. Mr Sylvester Wuwdaa, a trader, said the reduction in the price would greatly affect their businesses, but it was their contribution towards the fight against the pandemic.

He said in the wake of this deadly pandemic we all have to contribute our quota to help relieve the burden on others.

  • New Takoradi: Mother, two children die in fire on Good Friday

A fire outbreak on Good Friday has led to the death of a mother and her two children at New Takoradi, a fishing community in the Western Region.

The mother was in her early 30s and her children were aged one and the other eight months.

The deceased had gone to the affected structure to bath with her two children.

The Western Regional Fire Commander, ACFO Gaddiel Ebonyi, narrating the incident said some premix fuel kept close to the bathroom was being poured into another gallon not far from a coal pot and this triggered the inferno.

“Gallons of petrol are here, and they were pouring the petrol to another container and there was also a coal pot of fire somebody was cooking behind it. In a situation like this, there is no way the two can exist without the fire not coming into contact with that fuel.”

“So it is the business they were transacting that brought the fire. It is simply not good for petrol to be kept in the house, the best way is to get the fuel from the filling station. According to them, they also do some mixing which could be done at the sea shore.”

    ACFO Gaddiel Ebonyi-Fire Commander, W/R
    ACFO Gaddiel Ebonyi-Fire Commander, W/R

“So hoarding petrol in the house is not advisable at all. Please we should all stop doing things like that so we can protect our families.”

ACFO Ebonyi also said the fire service had a difficult time accessing the houses on fire due to the encroachment on the access road and urged the residents of New Takoradi to desist from such encroachment.

The beneficiaries, who went through a two-day intensive training workshop, were schooled in basic accounting skills in the areas of bookkeeping and financial management.

Mr Michael Arhin, a managing partner for SMA and Associates, who took the participants through the training, said it is essential for business owners to acquire basic accounting skills, to be applied in their businesses.

He said “gaining knowledge in bookkeeping and financial management did not make one an accountant by profession but it helps you to know whether your business is progressing, retrogressing or at a standstill”.

On bookkeeping, Mr Arhin said, it is important to take records of daily financial transactions of one’s business in order to keep track of monies that come in and go out so as to determine the progress and financial standing of the business.

Mr Arhin said on financial management, budgeting, implementation of the budget and review was crucial for the survival of any business since that helps the businessman to keep track of the gains and losses of their businesses and also enable them to develop ideas on how their businesses were faring.

He said receiving the training alone was not enough for one’s business to progress and as such tasked the participants to implement what they have been taught in order to know their profit and loss variables, make financial projections and be able to maximize their wealth as shareholders in their various businesses.

Nana Yaa Konadu Amponsah, the Business Advisory Head for the Takoradi Business Advisory Center, said her outfit recognizes the importance to train its clients for them to know how their businesses are faring and also to be able to manage their business cash inflows.

“It is our desire to see progress in the businesses of our clients and that is why from time to time we organize such capacity building training sessions to add value to the practical things they already know,” she said.

  • Takoradi-Tarkwa rail services to be back soon

Mr Thomas Charles Brown, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Railways Company Limited says the suspension of passenger services on the Takoradi-Tarkwa rail will ultimately amount to the benefits of customers and encouraged them to have faith in the company.

The GRCL began passenger services from Takoradi to Tarkwa in February, this year, but encountered some challenges that resulted in a minor derailment, and the company’s engineers were working on it to enable passengers enjoy the service.

However, a few days into their operations, the company had to announce a suspension plan to allow Amanda Holdings, the contractors of the project to work on the Kojokrom- Eshiem section.

Mr. Brown said the suspension which was instructed by the Railway Development Authority would enable the contractors to have ample time to construct than standard gauge line, to provide better and quality service delivery clients of the company anxious to patronise their services.

The company according to him had no problems in their operations currently.
“I was around somewhere last week and substantial work had been done and barring any unforeseen circumstances, it would enable us to open the lines for passenger travels soon”, the PRO added.

  • Takoradi girls: A more experienced forensic opinion needed Professor Akosa

A former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, is the latest to have added his voice to calls for another forensic opinion in the case of the missing Takoradi girls, ABC News can report.

Professor Akosa says a more experienced forensic opinion is required to authenticate the outcome of the DNA test conducted by the police.

The Police confirmed the death of Ruth Abakah, Priscilla Kuranchie, Ruth Love Quayson and Priscilla Blessing Bentum after a DNA examination conducted on some skulls found in a septic tank at the residence of one of the suspects turned out to be positive.

According to the results delivered by the Acting IGP, the skulls and other human remains retrieved over a month ago by the forensic team of the Ghana Police Service at the hideout of the prime suspect, Samuel Udoetuk Wills are that of the missing girls.

But speaking on the issue on Accra based Citi FM Tuesday, Prof. Badu Akosa, who is also a pathologist, said he was not convinced by the latest developments.

“I believe sincerely that this forensic evidence should be subjected to a more experienced opinion. I do not know the forensic scientist who performed this test but I believe that there are so many disjointed things in this discussion that I want a second opinion on this report. That is the only thing that will tie the ends of the case”, he opined.

He also expressed his disappointment over the way the police service handled the matter describing it as alarming.

“Clearly, these girls were abducted on different dates and as far as I am concerned even if it was the same team doing the work, it tells us there is virtually no proper police investigation in this country,” he said.

“I find it a little disconcerting especially that people could be abducted from different sites and at one point all the evidence point to the fact that they were in Nigeria and at another, they were all brought to one place,” he added.

He further intimated that because the body remains are the most important evidence at hand, there is a need for a more experienced forensic examination.

“As far as I am concerned, I will not rest. To begin to think that at the end of the day, we have all this evidence, including the most important evidence at the fore now, which is the DNA evidence from the body parts of these girls, I think more needs to be done,” he said.
