Woman dies in Kwadaso after allegedly being thrown out of taxi

A woman in her forties has tragically lost her life after being allegedly pushed out of a taxi by unknown individuals.

The incident took place on the evening of Thursday, August 15, 2024, in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti Region, specifically between Star Junction and Agric Junction.

Witnesses have reported that the woman was forcefully ejected from the taxi, which led to an alarm being raised by residents.

The suspects quickly drove away when locals began shouting.

Attempts to help the woman were made by those who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, but she succumbed to her injuries minutes later.

The police were notified, and they have since transported the body to the morgue.

The family of the deceased has been identified, and a police investigation into the case is ongoing.

  • Nigeria crackdown on ghost workers receiving salaries while residing abroad

Nigeria crackdown on ghost workers receiving salaries while residing abroad

When leaving a job, one would expect their salary to cease, but for several ex-Nigerian civil servants, this isn’t the case.

Despite securing employment elsewhere, sometimes even abroad, these individuals continue to draw salaries from their previous government positions.

This issue has caught the attention of President Bola Tinubu, who recently ordered a crackdown on such practices.

“The culprits must be made to refund the money they have fraudulently collected,” he said.

Sabitu Adams, a pseudonym used to safeguard his identity, remains employed as a junior official at a government agency without formally resigning, continuing to receive monthly pay despite leaving Nigeria two years ago.

Now working as a taxi driver in the UK, Adams expressed to the BBC his lack of concern about losing his salary, viewing President Tinubu’s remarks as hollow threats.

He further mentioned that losing his Nigerian salary of 150,000 naira ($100; £80) per month would not pose significant hardship, given his higher earnings from taxi driving.

“When I heard about the president’s directive, I smiled because I know I am doing better here – and not worried,” the 36-year-old said.

But why not make it clear to the civil service that he had left?

“To be honest I didn’t resign because I wanted to leave that door open in case I choose to go back to my job after a few years.”

Like Mr Adams, more than 3.6 million Nigerians have relocated to other countries over the last two years, according to official statistics.

Many young Nigerians see little prospect of earning a good living in the country – a feeling exacerbated by the collapse in the value of the naira over the past year following the reforms introduced by Mr Tinubu since he became president.

It has become so common for young people to seek their fortunes outside the country, the term “japa” has been coined to describe the phenomenon.

It is a word from the Yoruba language meaning to escape or flee.

Mr Tinubu said he was “struck by the revelations the head of the civil service shared regarding employees who had relocated abroad while drawing salaries without formally resigning”.

The president said that not only should the money be repaid but those who were complicit in allowing it to happened should be investigated too.

“Their supervisors and department heads must also be punished for aiding and abetting the fraud under their watch,” he said.

And this may have been the case for Mr Adams.

The UK-based taxi driver admitted that he continued to be paid thanks to those in his department: “I had a good understanding with my boss and he just let me leave.”

Often in such cases the salary is divided between the supervisor who keeps quiet and the person being paid, maybe along with an HR representative.

But for Mr Adams it was even easier. “In my case it wasn’t like that as my boss was a relative.”

So-called “ghost-working” is a major problem in Nigeria. Despite several crackdowns it is believed that thousands of non-existent workers are still being paid. There appear to be very few checks and balances in place.

However, this marks the first instance where it has been suggested that individuals who have relocated abroad are still receiving their salaries on a significant scale.

Auwal Yakasai, who retired as a director in charge of finance at Kano state’s information ministry in 2021, said he had heard of such cases.

”To be honest I have never caught anyone red-handed,” Mr Yakasai, who worked for the government for 32 years, told the BBC.

“But I have heard numerous stories of such arrangements, where someone would still be receiving [a] salary after relocating or changing their place of work.”

Since assuming office in May last year, Mr. Tinubu has vowed to trim governance expenses and curb wastage.

In January, he mandated a 60% reduction in official entourages to state and international events for himself and other government officials.

However, critics point out that Mr. Tinubu’s administration has been more about rhetoric than action.

They highlight plans to purchase new planes worth millions of dollars for Mr. Tinubu and his deputy, Kashim Shettima, as indicative of this trend.

Another instance was the recent unveiling of a new official residence for Vice-President Shettima in Abuja, costing $13.6m (£11m).

Despite the president’s remarks regarding foreign ghost-workers, he has not specified concrete steps to crack down on them and hold accountable those involved.

Family of taxi driver who died in cells sues police, Attorney General for GHC5m

The family of the late 53-year-old taxi driver, Joseph Entsie, from Fijai, who reportedly died in a police cell in Sekondi, has filed a lawsuit against the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney General at the Sekondi High Court.

The family is seeking compensation amounting to GHC5 million. Joseph Entsie, who operated from the Fijai Taxi Rank in Takoradi, was arrested on December 25, 2021, on charges of drunk driving and allegedly hitting a police officer at the Effia-Nkwanta Nurses Quarters checkpoint with his vehicle.

He was detained at the Sekondi Police Station and later pronounced dead.

Initially, the police claimed that the deceased committed suicide with his trousers while in detention. However, in November 2022, the Commercial Division of the Sekondi High Court ruled that the late taxi driver was killed by police officers, contradicting the initial police report.

The family’s lawyer, Ebo Donkor, revealed in a recent interview that a fresh case has been filed against the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney General, and both parties have responded to the writ.

“It is based on the initial ruling that the family has laid a fresh case at the High Court. The family has sued the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney General demanding compensation of Five Million Ghana Cedis.

“Both the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney General have responded to the writ and we were supposed to have the first sitting on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, but the court adjourned the case to a later date, February, 14, 2024,” the lawyer disclosed.

  • Jobless man looking for passenger who forgot more than GHS100,000 in a taxi

Jobless man looking for passenger who forgot more than GHS100,000 in a taxi

A jobless man named Dela Anim is currently searching for a passenger who inadvertently left behind an amount exceeding GH¢100,000 in a taxi that he had hailed.

This incident occurred nearly a year after another taxi driver, Akwasi Ackon, earned widespread praise for returning ¢8,400 to a fishmonger who had left it in his vehicle.

According to Dela, he had boarded a taxi at the Mobile filling station in Nima, with his destination being Abossey Okai. During the course of the journey, he stumbled upon a blue-black polythene bag in the back seat of the car.

Upon opening it, he was surprised to discover a substantial sum of money.

However, Dela made the decision not to inform the taxi driver about the money but instead brought it to the studios of Adom FM.

“I didn’t trust the taxi driver to return the money if I had told him about it. Also, I didn’t want any stories from him so I just kept it to myself. I checked the money at the reception and realised it was GH¢105,000.00,” he narrated.

In addition to the substantial sum of money, Dela mentioned that he came across a key, a list, and an identification card inside the bag. He believes that these items could potentially aid in identifying the rightful owner.

When questioned about why he chose not to retain the money, especially considering the ongoing economic challenges and his own unemployment status, Dela explained that his decision was guided by his personal principles and values.

“I owned a transport business but it has collapsed so I’m unemployed and depend on the benevolence of my family to survive. Growing up as a Christian and Presbyterian, my parents taught me not to take what is not mine and that has guided my siblings and I throughout life,” he said.

Dela mentioned that he does not anticipate any form of compensation for his act of kindness but would graciously accept any token of appreciation once the rightful owner is located.

Furthermore, upon hearing Dela’s story, several Ghanaians have expressed their admiration and approval of his commendable actions.

Wondered why taxis, trotro, other vehicles have yellow license plates: , CD, and white? Here’s why

Did you know that number plates with green and red backgrounds hold special significance and are issued to specific groups of people? The yellow plates provided by the Drivers Vehicle and License Authority (DVLA) also target particular individuals.

In this article, GhanaWeb Business will list the various types of number plates and the categories of individuals authorized to use them.

Yellow Number Plate: Commercial vehicle drivers seeking to register their cars are issued a yellow number plate. This type of identification is commonly seen on taxis, trotros, and buses.

Green Number Plate: All vehicles with green number plates are government-owned. They serve as a means for security personnel to identify government officials and sometimes provide them with special treatment when necessary.

CD Plate: The designation “CD” stands for Corps Diplomatic. Cars bearing CD plates are primarily driven by foreign diplomats, such as ambassadors. Additionally, members of international organizations also use CD plates.

DV Plate: “DV” stands for Defective vehicle. Car owners who have not yet registered their vehicles are assigned DV plates. DV cars are intended for temporary use, with the DV designation valid for twelve calendar months and applicable to various vehicles at different times. Moreover, DV plates come with a logbook that should contain records of the vehicle’s movements and driver details, and this logbook must be carried at all times.

Black or White Background Number Plate: These number plates are used by private individuals. Private institutions, such as banks and schools, also employ this type of number plate.

Meanwhile, the DVLA has announced the commencement of an initiative to phase out all old driver’s license cards issued before September 2017 from the system. These outdated cards will be replaced with smart driver’s license cards. The exercise will be in effect from now until March 31, 2024, after which all old card driver’s licenses will be rendered invalid by the Authority.

5 dead in South Africa taxi strike, including police officer

Amid the taxi strike in Cape Town, South Africa, a total of five individuals have tragically lost their lives due to violent protests. Among the casualties were a 40-year-old British citizen and a police officer.

The unrest ensued following a week-long strike organized by the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), triggered by what the drivers described as “heavy-handed tactics” employed by law enforcement authorities.

The United Kingdom has issued a travel advisory concerning South Africa, raising concerns about the strike’s classification as a high-security threat.

Despite attempts at negotiation, the taxi strike is expected to persist as discussions between Santaco and the Democratic Alliance-led provincial government deteriorated.

Concurrently, Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga has demanded the immediate release of minibus taxis impounded by municipal authorities.

She asserted that the legislation utilized by the city had been misapplied and incorrectly executed.

Taxi drivers and owners contended that their vehicles were being unfairly targeted and seized for minor infractions, such as not wearing seat belts or improperly using the emergency lane.

Meanwhile, other motorists were subjected to mere fines for comparable transgressions.

  • Taxi driver remanded for allegedly robbing passenger

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded into Police custody a 30-year old driver, Collins Afoakwa aka Kwabena Mintah who attempted to rob his passenger at North Kaneshie.

Afoakwa charged with attempted robbery pleaded not guilty and will reappear before the court presided over by Mrs Helen Ofei Ayeh on July 14.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Emmanuel Ohene Agyei told the court that the complainant Janet Mawusi Sogbo is a 29-year-old trader residing at Odorkor Official Town in Accra.

Chief Inspector Agyei said Afoakwa also resides in Kasoa in the Central Region.

The prosecution said on June 16, this year at about 2330 hours the complainant stopped Afoakwa who was in charge of KIA Sephia taxi with registration number AS 9554 Z at Bubuashie Ayigbe Town.

The prosecution said the complainant asked Afoakwa to take her to her residence at Odorkor Official Town.

The prosecutor said when the complainant ascertained from Afoakwa how much he was going to charge, Afoakwa said she should not worry and that he was not going to take much.

Chief Inspector Agyei said the complainant boarded the vehicle but Afoakwa drove towards North Kaneshie instead of using an alternative route to the complainant’s house.

He said when the complainant quizzed the accused over his choice of routes, he informed her that he was finding his way to the main road.

The prosecution said, however on reaching a road under construction where there was a heap of gravels, Afoakwa asked her to surrender her money but the complainant responded that she only had GHC10.00 on her.

The prosecution said not satisfied with the complainant’s answer, Afoakwa further demanded her mobile phone but the complainant declined to give it to the accused.

The Prosecution said the accused started driving the car away but the complainant sensing danger jumped out of the moving vehicle.

He said the complainant, as a result, sustained knee injuries and started shouting for help so that Afoakwa could be arrested but he sped off.

Mr Agyei said the complainant on reaching a safer place narrated her ordeal to a gentleman who offered to transport her to Odorkor for her to board a car to her residence.

The prosecution said on their way the complainant spotted Afoakwa standing by his vehicle along the North Kaneshie-Abeka road but on seeing the complainant he abandoned his vehicle and took to his heels.

The prosecution said a report was made to the Police and Afoakwa’s vehicle was impounded.

He said on June 22, this year, Afoakwa’s car owner handed him over to the Police.

Prosecution recalled that in the year 2017, Afoakwa committed a similar offence and trial was ongoing at another Circuit court.

  • Atomic Junction Station drivers unhappy with urgent vacation notice

Commercial drivers and traders occupying the Atomic Junction Station have called on the Ga East District Assembly and government to intervene in their deliberations with their landlords who have given them a one week vacation notice.

They said this intervention is needed to restrain their landlords, Masco Oil Company, from abrogating their existing contract.

Mr Emmanuel Obakonko, Welfare Chairman, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said there was a signed document between the station and Masco Oil Company, the Lessee of the land for a period of one year.

He said indeed, the agreement has expired but the Lessee was refusing to renew it saying the money would be taken on a daily basis and this became the new agreement between the station and the company.

They then, Mr Obakonko said, asked us to halt all operations on Monday, June 15.

As things stand, he said, the station has been served with one week notice to vacate the land without any reasons attached to it and this station plays a vital role for people residing beyond Haatso, Ashongman and Dome, hence the urgent appeal for normalcy to return.
