NPP will win Ejisu by-election – Nana Boakye

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) remains optimistic about winning the upcoming by-election in the Ejisu Constituency, despite the emergence of independent candidate Kwabena Owusu Aduomi as a strong contender.

Both the party’s national and regional executives have intensified their campaign efforts within the constituency, expressing confidence in retaining the Ejisu parliamentary seat.

Henry Nana Boakye, National Organizer of the NPP, affirmed the party’s unwavering confidence in an interview with Citi News, stating, “Ejisu is clearly NPP, and NPP is Ejisu…we do not believe any independent candidate can secure victory in the Ejisu Constituency.”

The party further emphasized that Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, the former Member of Parliament for the area running as an independent candidate, has made minimal contributions to the constituency’s development.

Nana Boakye emphasized that the independent candidate does not pose a threat to the party’s anticipated triumph.

“Clearly Ejisu is NPP and NPP is Ejisu…we do not see that any independent candidate can win the Ejisu Constituency.

“We have a vibrant and energetic lawyer and we are strategically positioning the party to win this hands down,” he stated.

“The facts are there; under President Kufuor, he was appointed at the Ministry of Highways as a director. Under Nana Akufo-Addo he was appointed as a deputy minister of roads…NPP gave him the opportunity to be an MP for 12 good years.”

  • Project to combat extremism in Northern Ghana launched

Project to combat extremism in Northern Ghana launched

Over a decade after terrorists besieged the region, Ghana has still not been targeted.

It is imperative to recognize, however, that violent extremism today poses a threat to more than just Ghana.

The West Africa Centre for Counter-Extremism (WACCE) Executive Director, Mutaru Mumuni Muqthar, has stated that it is currently closer to the nation than it has ever been.

West Africa has lost 53% of its population to terrorism, according to WACCE.

23 Ghanaians have been talked out of traveling to join extremist groups, while it is known that 13 Ghanaians have already joined such groups.

“Terrorists have a huge exploitative capacity; they take advantage of existing vulnerabilities to recruit and/or attack,” he said.

Northern Ghana is now more at risk as the threat moves from the Sahel and Burkina Faso to the coastal states.

WACCE is starting a project in Northern Ghana called “Building Resilience Against Violent Extremism through Social Cohesion” to deal with this.

The concept was unveiled by WACCE on Friday at a press briefing.

  • Russia blasts the United States for remarks about grain deals

Russia has slammed the United States for making false claims about Moscow’s decision to withdraw from a grain export deal mediated by the United Nations.

Russia’s defence ministry said Ukraine used 16 drones to attack its Black Sea Fleet near Sevastopol on the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula early Saturday, and that British navy “specialists” assisted in coordinating the “terrorist” attack.

Anatoly Antonov, the Russian ambassador to the US, said on Telegram: “Washington’s reaction to the terrorist attack on the port of Sevastopol is truly outrageous.

“We have not seen any signs of condemnation of the reckless actions by the Kyiv regime.”

Mr Antonov added: “All the indications that the British military specialists were involved in organising the massive strike with the use of drones, are disregarded.”

The UK has dismissed Russia’s claims as false, while US President Joe Biden denounced Russia’s decision on the grain deal as “purely outrageous” and said it would increase starvation.

  • Security services undertake training to combat threats of extremist attacks

Terrorist attacks in Ghana’s neighbouring countries have necessitated intensive training exercises for the country’s security forces.

A three-day training exercise dubbed “Exercise Flaming Spears” has been carried out at Ejura in the Ashanti Region.

The exercise, which began on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, is designed to provide security personnel with the knowledge they need to combat extremist attacks.

Personnel from the Police, Immigration, Prisons, National Ambulance Service, Fire Service, Customs, and the Army participated in the training, which ended on Thursday, October 20, 2022.

Major Evans Adu Danso, the officer in charge of the training exercise, told the media that the initiative was necessary because Ghana is not immune to terrorist attacks and thus the need to adequately prepare for any unforeseen occurrences.

Mr Adu Danso said “the exercise is based on internal security and counter-insurgency operations to take care of violent extremist and terrorist groups which are trying to come in from the Sahel region. The terrorist coming from the Sahara region could be coming from the northern part of the country, and there can be infiltration in the central part too. “

“This exercise is supposed to coil all activities of the violent extremists and terrorist groups who are trying to use our sector into Accra and coastal areas to go into other activities at the shore,” he added.

During the simulation exercise, officers of the Police Service were made to encounter a protesting extremist Islamic group.

The protesting group pelted sachets of water at the team of police officers who tried to disperse the group.

After some minutes, the military was called in to help deal with the situation.

The recent spate of terrorist attacks in Africa is threatening the peace and stability enjoyed by the continent.

During the first quarter of 2022, 346 terrorist attacks were reported to have occurred in various parts of Africa, according to National Security Minister Kan-Dapaah.  Of the 346 attacks, 156 took place in West Africa.

He added that in the month of August alone, 76 terrorist attacks occurred, leading to the deaths of close to 200 people and over 20 others sustaining injuries.

Countries most impacted by terrorist attacks are Nigeria, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Togo, Burkina Faso, and Mali.

  • Consistent training key to combating terrorist attacks in Africa Army Commander

The West African sub region, is facing intense security challenges following the increased activities from violent extremists groups.

Mali and Burkina Faso, have become theatres of violence, with various armed groups attacking, kidnapping and killing on a daily basis.

Analysts believe the terrorists are seeking to reach coastal states along the Gulf of Guinea, such as Togo, Benin and Ghana, where they can have direct access to the sea and transport logistics to aid their cause.

The growing threat of terrorism in Sahel is not only dangerous for the West African subregion, but it also puts Europe under direct threat due to its proximity to the African continent.

Equipping armies on the continent with the skills and resources to counter the threat is therefore crucial towards safeguarding the peace and stability of the world.

As part of this effort, the United States and its partners initiated a joint military training under the code name, Operation African Lion, which has, over the years, been carried out in Morocco and Tunisia.

However, the 2022 program saw the addition of Senegal and Ghana all hosting month-long training camps.

More than seven thousand troops from the participating countries had the opportunity for shoulder-to-shoulder training, to ensure a coordinated multinational response.

In a digital press briefing on the initiative, the Commander of the US Army Southern European Task Force, Major General Andrew M. Rohling explained that, Ghana and Senegal were included this year because the exercise fits the security needs of both countries.

“They intertwined well with our interoperability objectives that we were hoping to get at African Lion,” he stressed.

    Maj. Gen. Andrew M. Rohling

The exercise in Ghana saw the Ghana Armed Forces and their US partners participate in a joint simulated attack on the Daboya Military Training camp, which partner forces were able to neutralize.

According to Major General Rohling, the simulated exercise “will help each participating country, no matter how they participate, prove themselves to be a little better and a little more capable of exercising their military and their governance as best sees fit. So I think that if you have the opportunity to rehearse in training and rehearse in simulation and rehearse with your partners, it makes you a stronger country when you face a real threat.”

    Vice Admiral Seth Amoama

Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama after watching the exercise, assured Ghanaians that, the military are ready to counter any attack by extremist groups. Adding that, the troops are also preparing to join a multi-national operation to fight the growing presence of the jihadists in the gulf region.

  • Ghana, Mozambique form alliance to address terrorist threats in sub-region

President Akufo-Addo has appealed to President Felipe Jacinto Nyusi of Mozambique to join forces with Ghana in the battle against terrorist acts in the West African sub-region.

In response to the rising tide of terrorism in West Africa, President Akufo-Addo remarked that both Ghana and Mozambique cannot turn a blind eye to the issue of terrorist acts in Africa, which is threatening the continent’s security.

According to him, a cooperative effort between Ghana and Mozambique will not only strengthen security preparations, but also discover ways to decrease reliance on European countries.

“Ghana will continue to collaborate with Mozambique to find solutions to challenges such as, the eradicate of widespread poverty, regulation of illegal migration, insecurity and human right violation, terrorist and violence extremism, human and drug trafficking as well as negative impact of climate changes on environment and livelihood.”

President Akufo-Addo made these remarks when he welcomed President Felipe Jacinto Nyusi to the Jubilee House as part of his four-day visit to Ghana.

The two Presidents also signed two bilateral agreements to deepen cooperation between the Ghana and Mozambique.

The agreements are the Permanent Joint Partnership Commission for Cooperation and a Joint waiver on visa requirements and diplomatic service passports.

Meanwhile, according to Edward Kweku Asomani, the Deputy National Security Coordinator, within the first quarter of 2022, Africa has experienced about 346 terrorist attacks in various countries. 49 per cent out of these, he noted, occurred in West Africa.

These numbers emphasise the importance of such a collaboration in the battle against terrorism in West Africa.

  • Extremist attacks: I believe the terrorists are already in Ghana Dr Ishmael Norman

Dr. Ishmael Norman, the president of the Institute for Security, Disaster and Emergency Studies, has suggested that some terrorists have already made their way into the country.

This comes after the National Security recently issued a number of stern warnings and alerts of potential attacks by extremist elements targeted at Ghana.

Reacting to the development in an interview with Accra-based TV3 on May 21, Dr. Norman said although the situation is worrying, citizens must be circumspect in their dealings taking into consideration their personal safety and security.

“They are not just near Ghana; they are in Ghana. Some of them will even marry Ghanaian men or women. We have to assume that they are already here. The National Security warning is a good one, I believe the terrorists are already in Ghana,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah on Saturday also described as worrying reports of potential attacks by extremist groups targeting Ghana as their next spot to cause mayhem.

He however said government through security agencies will continue to tighten their apparatus and intelligence gathering but urged Ghanaians to take their personal security in high regard.

“Very worrying reports of potential attacks of extremist elements targeted at Ghana. As we heighten the alertness of intelligence and security agencies, all of us need to be more security conscious and be quick to report any suspicious persons or packages to security agencies,” Oppong-Nkrumah wrote.

“They (Fulani herdsmen) arrived this afternoon and started shooting at houses and anyone in sight.

“As we speak, three people have been killed. There will likely be more deaths at the end of the day because a lot of people were hit by bullets while running out of the village. The attackers are still shooting in the community.
