Tiffany Haddish defends her controversial TikTok video filmed in Zimbabwe supermarket after backlash

American comedian Tiffany Haddish has defended her controversial TikTok video showcasing a supermarket in Harare, Zimbabwe, claiming her intention was to challenge the stereotype that Africa is plagued by constant war.

Haddish received criticism from some Zimbabweans on social media after she posted a video of herself walking through a large supermarket in the capital city.

In the video, she expressed amazement at the store’s size and its well-stocked shelves filled with soft drinks, frozen meat, and fresh fruit.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) criticized Haddish, accusing her of ignorance and suggesting she believes Africans shop from rocks.

Another user commented on the misguided perception many Americans have about Africa, thinking its inhabitants live in primitive conditions without modern amenities.

In response to the backlash, Haddish explained on X that she had been misinformed about Africa throughout her life.

She described being shown images of starving children and hearing stories about violence and daily warfare in Africa.

Haddish mentioned that her visit to Zimbabwe had been eye-opening, helping her to learn the truth about the continent.

She shared her experience to inform Americans who might share the same misconceptions.

While some criticized her, others defended Haddish, appreciating her interest in their grocery stores and affirming that the products she found surprising are commonplace.

Haddish, who is half-Eritrean, first visited Eritrea in 2018 and praised its long-time ruler Isaias Afwerki, despite him being labeled a dictator by critics.

Despite the challenges, she shared her dedication to each pregnancy, saying, “Every time I find out I’m pregnant, I’m like, ‘Don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t do nothing.’ Even if I don’t really want [the baby], I still try to give it a chance.”

Tiffany Haddish discloses she’s had 8 miscarriages

An American stand-up comedian and actress, Tiffany Haddish has candidly opens up about her history of pregnancy loss, revealing that she has experienced eight miscarriages.

The renowned comedian and star of Disney’s upcoming film “Haunted Mansion” shared her recent struggle with a miscarriage in an interview with “The Washington Post.”

“It just won’t keep anything in,” Haddish said in the July 20 article, which chronicled the 43-year-old’s phone call with her doctor’s office.

According to Haddish, her eighth miscarriage was attributed to having a uterus “shaped like a heart,” known as a bicornuate uterus.

Describing her conversation with her doctor’s office in the July 20 article, the 43-year-old actress expressed her frustration with her unique uterine condition.

A bicornuate uterus has a heart-shaped structure with a partial separation, causing potential issues during pregnancy as it may not fully expand to accommodate a growing baby.

The Cleveland Clinic explains that individuals with this condition have an increased risk of miscarrying.

During the interview, it was also revealed that Haddish may be dealing with endometriosis, a condition where uterine tissue grows outside the uterus, leading to pain, inflammation, and bleeding.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) notes that endometriosis is prevalent in almost 40% of women with infertility.

Despite her challenges, Haddish has chosen to keep her reproductive history private, sharing it only with a close friend. She expressed a preference for dealing with difficult times in solitude, away from public scrutiny.

In the past, the “Girls Trip” star had considered adoption as a means to become a mother. She even attended parenting classes in preparation. However, her busy work schedule in 2021 hindered the adoption process.

Haddish believes that bringing a child into her life requires undivided attention and dedication, emphasizing her desire to be fully present as a mother, offering the child her love and knowledge.

As she continues to navigate her journey towards parenthood, Tiffany Haddish remains strong and resilient, determined to find the right path to motherhood.

  • Tiffany Haddish, Aries Spears child sex abuse lawsuit dropped

A woman and her younger brother who filed a lawsuit earlier this month against Tiffany Haddish and Aries Spears, accusing the comedic duo of coercing them into making sexually themed sketch videos when they were minors, dropped the civil action Tuesday and said the family has “put this behind us.”

The “Jane Doe” who was representing herself in the federal civil case filed a notice of dismissal Tuesday with prejudice – meaning the suit cannot be re-filed. The filing included a statement from the plaintiff, TMZ reported, which read:

“My family and I have known Tiffany Haddish for many years – and we now know that she would never harm me or my brother or help anyone else do anything that could harm us. We wish Tiffany the best and are glad that we can all put this behind us.”

The lawsuit, filed Aug. 30 in federal court in California, accused Haddish and Spears of arranging for the children, who were 14 and 7 at the time of the 2013 incident, to be paid to appear in promotional videos via their mother – a friend of Haddish’s from the comedy circuit.

But the videos (which were seen and substantiated by the Daily Beast) turned out to be sexually themed. In one, the girl was asked to perform a suggestive act with a sandwich; in the other, filmed months later, the boy was depicted as the object of a pedophile’s obsession, with Haddish playing the boy’s mother and Spears playing the “pedophile.”

Haddish later said she regretted being part of the latter sketch.

A lawyer for Haddish told TheWrap after the suit was filed that the children’s mother had been trying for years to extort the comedian, calling the claims “bogus” and a “shakedown.” Newly listed lawyers for the comedians did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

Spears also said later that the lawsuit was an extortion attempt and a shakedown.

  • Tiffany Haddish and Aries Spears’ accuser drops Lawsuit over alleged child sexual abuse

The woman who recently accused Tiffany Haddish and Aries Spears of child sex abuse in connection with a 2013 Funny or Die sketch filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

TMZ reports the accuser, identified only as Jane Doe in her Los Angeles Superior Court suit, asked the judge to dismiss the case with prejudice. The 22-year-old’s request was granted, and the lawsuit has been formally dropped.

“My family and I have known Tiffany Haddish for many years, and we now know that she would never harm me or my brother or help anyone else do anything that could harm us,” the woman said in a statement. “We wish Tiffany the best and are glad that we can all put this behind us.”

Jane Doe and her 15-year-old brother, going by John Doe, sued Haddish and Spears for intentional infliction of emotional distress, gross negligence, sexual battery, sexual harassment, and sexual abuse of a minor. Jane and John alleged the comedians recruited them to take part in sexually explicit skits in separate incidents when both were minors.

Haddish subsequently addressed the accusations in a statement on Instagram, noting the material in question was “intended to be comedic” at the time, although she now regrets having been a part of it.

News of the lawsuit getting dropped arrives two weeks after Jane Doe called on Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón to “immediately arrest and prosecute” Haddish and Spears. According to the Daily Beast, Jane reportedly sent a letter to the D.A.’s office, which stated that she and her brother were “prepared to speak with investigators and prosecutors” about the allegations at the heart of the lawsuit.

“This matter’s breadth and complexity require your jurisdictional powers and resources to tackle and end the stream [of] depravity committed by Haddish and Spears,” the letter said.

Now that Jane and John Doe’s suit has been dismissed with prejudice, the complaint cannot be refiled.
