Tom Brady shares details of his talk with Bellingham after his switch to Real Madrid

Tom Brady praises Jude Bellingham for his latest individual accolade and shares that they had a conversation when Bellingham joined Real Madrid.

Bellingham, aged 20, clinched the Breakthrough of the Year award at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid. This recognition follows his earlier achievements of winning the 2023 Golden Boy and Ballon d’Or Kopa trophies this season.

“When he actually transferred from Dortmund to Real Madrid, we struck up a conversation. I was really impressed by his maturity and how talented he is, although of course everyone can see that,” Brady told ESPN Deportes.

“He’s got a great future because of what’s in his brain and what he’s really focused on.”

Brady, a minority investor in Birmingham City, joined others in praising Bellingham at the award ceremony. Tennis star Novak Djokovic, who secured his record-equalling fifth Laureus Sportsman Award, commended Bellingham, noting that he possesses all the qualities of a “great champion.”

“What I was impressed with is that he was always trying to make these runs, and he was not getting the right balls, and he was getting a little bit frustrated, but then he was waiting for the right opportunity,” Djokovic told a news conference.

“He was serious, professional, dedicated, patient and believed that the chance would come. It came at the right moment and he decided the game. He’s only 20, so that’s a feature or characteristic of a great champion.”

Following his award win on Monday, Bellingham expressed his ambition to secure a trio of team accolades this season, aiming for a successful culmination to his debut campaign with Madrid.

With Madrid leading La Liga by 11 points and progressing to the Champions League semifinals, Bellingham’s role becomes pivotal in Gareth Southgate’s pursuit of the European Championship title with England.

Having scored in Sunday’s victory over Barcelona in the ClĂĄsico, Bellingham’s contributions are instrumental as Madrid inches closer to clinching the La Liga title.

Additionally, they are set to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League semifinals after prevailing over Manchester City in the quarterfinals.

“It’s been an amazing 24 hours, a great week really for myself and the club,” Bellingham said, speaking at the Laureus ceremony held at Madrid City Hall. “To be here with so many amazing athletes and so many inspirational people is a real pleasure.

“We’ve still got a few more games to wrap up La Liga; we’ve got two very difficult games against Munich and then against the Euros. Hopefully we can take [England’s] form from the last few tournaments into that and push on and do one better.”

At just 17 years old, Bellingham contributed to the England squad during Euro 2020, making three substitute appearances en route to the final, where Italy clinched victory over England on penalties at Wembley.

In his debut season with Real Madrid, Bellingham has netted 21 goals, with 17 of them achieved in La Liga. His most recent goal, a 91st-minute winner against Barca at the BernabĂŠu, effectively sealed the title race with six games remaining.

“[Scoring in ClĂĄsico] is a really special feeling; you kind of lose all control of your body and the normal senses that go through your head,” Bellingham said. “It’s something I really enjoy doing.”

Bellingham said he is aware of his responsibility as an inspiration to young people.

“It’s important that I try to be a good role model,” he said. “I’m not perfect, but I want to have a good and lasting impact.”

  • Wayne Rooney speaks after Birmingham’s poor form

Wayne Rooney speaks after Birmingham’s poor form

Amidst significant excitement, Tom Brady and Wayne Rooney made their arrival in Birmingham, but the once-eager cheers have now transformed into jeers from the home supporters.

After securing NFL legend Tom Brady as an investor, the West Midlands-based team devised ambitious plans. Additionally, they enlisted the managerial expertise of Manchester United and England icon Wayne Rooney.

When Rooney took charge, the club was comfortably positioned within the Championship play-off places.

However, the initial optimism has given way to disappointment as the team has encountered a challenging stretch, suffering six defeats in nine games and managing only one victory.

This downturn has resulted in a significant drop to 17th place in the standings.

A 2-0 defeat at Coventry was met by jeers from the travelling support, with Rooney saying of that reaction and what needs to be done in order to deliver a reversal in fortune: “We’re in a difficult place; we know that, with the run of results and the points we’re losing. The big thing is that the goals we’re conceding are very poor goals. We have to figure it out and make sure we don’t give easy goals away.

“The run of form can’t continue. Of course, I understand the fans’ frustration. That’s normal when you go through a run of results like this and we have to change this as quickly as possible. If I were a fan in the stands there tonight, I would be exactly the same. But what I can tell you is we’re working really hard to fix it, to improve results and performances.”

Birmingham have been leaking goals at an alarming rate, with Rooney adding to a team that has collected just one clean sheet during his tenure: “We are getting punished when we’re making mistakes and we need to cut that out. Throughout the 90 minutes, Coventry were the better team, so they deserved to win the game.

“We let ourselves down with the goals we conceded. That’s my responsibility; it’s on me to get the players to perform better and pick up more points than we have done. It’s disappointing when you concede goals that are avoidable.”

Birmingham is set to resume play on Wednesday with an away game against Cardiff.

The Bluebirds are currently vying for a play-off spot, and the extent of support that Tom Brady and the Blues board can provide for reinforcements at St. Andrew’s during the January transfer window remains uncertain.

  • Tom Brady speaks on divorce from Gisele BĂźndchen: ‘All you can do is the best you can do’

After his recent divorce from his wife of 13 years, Gisele Bßndchen, Tom Brady is focusing on family and football.

“I think there are a lot of professionals in life that go through things that they deal with at work and they deal with at home,” Brady said on the latest episode of his podcast Lets Go! With Tom Brady. “Obviously, the good news is it’s a very amicable situation, and I’m really focused on two things: taking care of my family, and certainly my children, and secondly doing the best job I can to win football games. That’s what professionals do.”

He continued, “You focus at work when it’s time to work, and then when you come home, you focus on the priorities that are at home. All you can do is the best you can do. That’s what I’ll just continue to do as long as I’m working and as long as I’m being a dad.”

The comments come after news broke that the couple had undergone formal divorce proceedings in Florida on Friday. Rumors of a rift between the pair, who were married in 2009 and share two children together, were initially reported by TMZ in September. The outlet claimed Brady and Bündchen were living separately following Brady’s publicized and dramatic un-retirement from football.

“We arrived at this decision to end our marriage after much consideration,” Brady wrote in a statement after his divorce became official. “Doing so is, of course, painful and difficult, like it is for many people who go through the same thing every day around the world.”

Bündchen also penned her own statement, which read in part: “The decision to end a marriage is never easy but we have grown apart and while it is, of course, difficult to go through something like this, I feel blessed for the time we had together and only wish the best for Tom always.”

While on his Let’s Go! podcast, Brady echoed these sentiments and said he’s just trying to do the best he can do.

“I’ve dealt with a lot of challenging situations on and off the field over 23 years and a lot of it does play out in front of a lot of people,” he said.

“Everyone’s going through different things, we all have our unique challenges in life and we’re all humans and we do the best we can do. I have incredible parents that have always taught me the right way to do things. I wanna be a great father to my children and always try to do things the right way as well.”

  • Dwyane Wade & Coach K respond to 2008 vs. 2012 team USA debate: ‘We had 30-year-old Kobe’

As a sports fan, you rarely get the opportunity to see the best athletes and competitors of your generation team up to play alongside each other. We never saw Messi and Ronaldo team up during their prime nor did we see NFL players like Tom Brady and Adrian Peterson create an unstoppable duo but the 2008 U.S. men’s basketball team gave us one of those outliers. Kobe Bryant and LeBron James went from the No. 1 and No. 2 basketball players in the world to teammates in the Olympics. The nostalgia and rarity along with the Olympic success from Redeem Team gave us one of the most iconic teams in not only basketball history but sports history.

The Redeem Team documentary, produced by LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and The Last Dance director John Weinbach, has been the talk of basketball fans of late. The film takes you through the rise of Team USA basketball from being an embarrassment to being the powerhouse it’s become today.

“I can’t speak for Bron, but I know for me it was very important. We were important, we were leaders of that team. We were the voices of that team with our brother Kobe,” Dwyane Wade tells Complex. “When I was approached by the amazing team that you see that got assembled to do this… I jumped right in because I wanted to make sure that if this story was going to be told, that our voices were a big part of it.”

Prior to the film’s release we sat down with NBA legend and Olympic gold medalist Dwyane Wade along with coaching legend Mike Krzyzewski to talk about the documentary, the competition around the world, and the 2008 vs. 2012 Team USA debate.

(This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.)

What made you both decide to jump on this doc, anything specifically that you and Bron talked about that made you do it?
    D-Wade:
Yeah, man, I, I can’t speak for Bron, but I know for me it was very important. We were important, we were leaders of that team. We were the voices of that team with our brother Kobe. When I was approached by the amazing team that you see that got assembled to do this, to be a part of it, I jumped right in because I wanted to make sure that if this story was going to be told, that our voices were a big part of it. Our stories were told the way that they needed to be told.
Coach K: I loved it because it was an amazing story especially the fact that our players Dwyane and LeBron were so involved. All the access that was given to the NBA, we felt comfortable with them. We didn’t know where it would lead so this is one of the places it’s led to. It’s a great documentary. It’s very real and appropriate.

To D-Wade, with social media obviously Kobe and Bron do get a lot of attention from this team, but do you kind of feel like you were under the radar a little bit? I think it’s fair to say you were kind of the MVP of that team.
D-Wade: Do I feel like it? Yeah, I probably did at the time. I mean, I’m on a team with LeBron and Kobe. I, I get it too. You know what I mean? At the same time, I always look at it like this. You have to understand that it’s certain floors in the hotel that you don’t have access to, right? My card don’t go up to where they’ll go up to. I mean, I may stop at the penthouse. They may go a little further (laughs),  that other suite higher in a penthouse so I understood that. For me, I was coming off injuries and I was coming off very public personal things going on in my life. The Olympics was just very important for me to reestablish myself and put everything behind me to move forward. And I was just trying to be the best player for that team. And so I had an unbelievable role and my role that I had.  I would take it over and over again. I was like Jordan Clarkson for a little while. It felt good.

For both of you. We got a lot of good  Kobe anecdotes in the doc. Do you have any Kobe stories that weren’t told in the documentary?
    D-Wade:
Maybe the first one that comes to mind. And it blew my mind because at that time, I’m 26 years old. Kobe is 30 and Kobe’s the Star. I’m still young enough and coming up, I’ve only been in the league five years. Once I had the conversation with Coach K about, you know, where I was gonna play on the team and I was gonna come off the bench, I think Kobe sensed that, you know, just his innate ability as a leader. He sensed that ‘damn, like this is still D-Wade.’ Like even though he say he cool with it, he wanna be out there with us. And so he came to me and he was like, Yo, when you get in the game and we’re playing together  I’m gonna pick up full court and I’m gonna turn my defender around half court, and when I do that, you just come and do what you do.

Coach K: I’ve said so much. I loved Kobe. Not just as a player but as a person and I loved what he did. He was the best player at that time. He understood that. A couple days before practice he came in and met with me. He said I want to play defense. I want to guard the best player. In our first practice he never took a shot. He was so calculated in a positive way to make sure that he fits in. Obviously he fit in very well.

D-Wade: If you notice, I had a lot of steals. I had a lot of guys pressuring and they was letting me play free safety and just allow me to, to run through, come and steal the ball. And that’s why I got a lot of dances and a lot of fast breaks. So to have Kobe Bryant, Kobe, could have told me a young fella, you pick up 94 feet and when you turn ‘em, Imma come in and smash ‘em. Right. But he said, I’m gonna do it. And he set a precedent right there. He set an example that this is not about me, This is bigger than me. I know what you’re great at and I’m gonna put you in a position to succeed.

  • Gisele BĂźndchen reportedly ready to ‘move on’ from Tom Brady marriage

A Gisele Bßndchen and Tom Brady reconciliation? It seems unlikely.

A source tells People magazine that the 42-year-old super model is “done” with the relationship and is ready to move on from her 13-year marriage. The news comes about a month after Bündchen and Brady reportedly separated due to disagreements about the latter’s un-retirement.

“She is done with their marriage. She was upset about it for a long time and it’s still difficult, but she feels like she needs to move on,” the insider told the outlet. “She doesn’t believe that her marriage can be repaired … She is just trying to figure out her life.”

The source said Bündchen doesn’t have much contact with Brady, but “is doing OK.” The two tied the knot in 2009 and share two children: a 12-year-old son named Benjamin Rein, and a 9-year-old daughter named Vivian Lake. Brady also has a 15-year-old son, John Edward, whom he shares with his ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan. The insider said Bündchen “feels bad” for the children, but doesn’t expect to face any custody issues during the divorce proceedings.

In February, Brady confirmed he was retiring from the NFL after 22 seasons; however, he announced his return to the league just 40 days later—a decision that Bündchen seemingly opposed.

“Obviously, I have my concerns—this is a very violent sport, and I have my children and I would like him to be more present,” Gisele told Elle. “I have definitely had those conversations with him over and over again. But ultimately, I feel that everybody has to make a decision that works for [them]. He needs to follow his joy, too.”

Sources say the two have since retained divorce lawyers. The news came less than a year after Brady and Bündchen purchased a $17 million property on Miami Beach’s Indian Creek Island. An insider said Bündchen would prefer to stay in the area even after the divorce.

“Gisele loves Miami. She has friends there. She can see herself living there permanently,” the source said. “Again, she is still trying to figure things out. She is doing yoga, meditating and taking care of herself. She doesn’t put any pressure on herself to make drastic decisions.”
