  • Police patrol university campuses

    The Ghana Police Service has begun policing some universities in the country.

    On Saturday, May 14, the Police Mounted Squadron together with some Police Divisional and District Commanders visited the campuses of the University of Ghana, University of Professional Studies and the Valley View University in the Greater Accra Region.

    This forms part of efforts to show police visibility, gather intelligence, engage communities and bring the police to the doorstep of the public.

    During the visit, the officers engaged the university community and listened to their security concerns.

    They answered some questions on basic policing issues and also gathered some intelligence on the security situations on the various campuses.

    In a Facebook post, the Police thanked the various institutions for the warm welcome and assured that the exercise will be extended to other universities across the country.

    “We are grateful to the academic staff, the  student body, and all other members of the university community for their cooperation during our interactions with them.”

    “We wish to assure the public that we will continue to sustain this and other operational interventions and also work in partnership with you for safer and more secure communities.”

    Following the visit, the Police Service has begun operationalizing some of the intelligence picked during the exercise and putting in strategies to improve security at the universities.

  • UPSA lecturer selected for 26th UN Climate Change Conference

    Eric Boachie Yiadom, a lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has been selected among top global researchers for the 26th United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference.

    He is one of two Ghanaian researchers named as part of the Commonwealth Futures Climate Research Cohort for the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26).

    A statement issued by the UPSA, copied to the Ghana News Agency, said Mr Boachie Yiadom, a lecturer with the Department of Accounting of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance, UPSA, was a trained Chartered Accountant and a Ph.D. candidate with a research interest with a focus on contemporary developments in climate change.

    It said Mr Boachie Yiadom’s most recent research work focused on the role of local financial markets and fiscal policies on the relationship between international capital and environmental risk.

    It said UPSA was also one of only two universities in Ghana to had one of its faculty members selected for the global forum that supported rising-star researchers across the world.

    It said ably supported by the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and the British Council, the cohort convenes researchers with expertise in a range of disciplines, and who had a deep understanding of communities disproportionately impacted by climate change.

    It said the 26 members of the cohort were drawn from 25 ACU member universities from 16 countries to reflect the diversity of the Commonwealth.

    The statement said throughout 2021, the unique and diverse cohort would build international collaborations and work with experts to influence issues related to the climate and environment in their communities and beyond.

    It said the 26 researchers would also attend a series of expert-led workshops and design and deliver peer-led research-to-action projects.

    The statement noted that they would be mentored by senior academics and further their engagement with global climate stakeholders.

    It said they would also be travelling to Glasgow in November to attend the landmark COP26 conference.

    Mr Boachie Yiadom offers private consultation for some small and medium enterprises in Ghana.

    His research outputs in some ranked journals provide local solutions to help solve climatic and macroeconomic problems in Africa as well as in other developing countries around the globe.

  • UPSA: Two female students sexually assaulted

    The Student Representative Council of the University for Professional Studies has asked the student body to be careful with movements in and off campus.

    The caution comes after two female students of the University were allegedly raped by armed men.

    A statement signed by SRC Chairman for UPSA SRC, Prince Nartey Wade, mentioned that the  campus and routes around the University of Professional Studies- Accra (UPSA), were gradually becoming unsafe.

    According to the statement, this rape incident is one of the many reports the SRC has received.

    The statement also noted that thieves on motorcycles have been snatching monies, phones during the night.

    “The SRC is therefore urging the student in “limiting physical cash” and to also limit the use of electronic gadget as they (SRC) are trying to provide security at vantage points to monitor, deter and deal with these crimes”, the statement added.

  • UPSA students long queue causes stir

    A video report by a citizen captures students of the University of Professional Studies, Accra, in an unusually long at the entrance of the university as it begins lectures Monday morning.

    Tweeps have taken to the internet to create a buzz around the situation, some describing the students as being too serious.

    It is yet unclear why the students are held up in such long queues.

    Management of the University says they are committed to ensuring that all COVID-19 safety protocols are respected.

  • UPSA graduates maiden batch of law students

    The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Wednesday graduated its maiden batch of 130 Bachelor of Laws students.

    Of the number, 27 obtained Second Class Upper, 45 Second Class Lower, 42 Third Class and 16 had Pass.

    The graduation forms part of the first session of the 12th Congratulation of the UPSA. In addition to the UPSA Law Faculty, the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Studies also graduated a total of 434, out of which 148 are undergraduates and 286 diploma students.

    With regards to the undergraduates at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Studies, five obtained First Class, 59 Second Class Upper, 49 Second Class Lower, 27 Third Class and five Pass.

    Seven of the diploma students obtained Distinction, while 174 obtained Credit and 105 had pass.

    In all, within a four-day period, the University is expected to graduate a total of 3,520 students comprising 670 postgraduates, 1,994 undergraduates and 856 diplomas.

    Professor Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey, Vice-Chancellor, UPSA, said the 12th Congregation was being held at an unprecedented time, where the COVID-19 pandemic had affected people’s normal way of life.

    “I take special pride and delight in the students graduating this year. They are graduands so special to me, who I can call “my own,” he said.

    “These are the students who started with me when I was sworn into office as the eighth executive head and second Vice-Chancellor of this great University to begin my four-year term of office.”

    Concerning teaching and learning, the Vice-Chancellor recalled that as part of measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Sunday, March 15, issued a directive that all educational institutions in Ghana should be closed until further notice.

    Prof Amartey said as a result, Management resolved that in order not to disrupt the second semester of the 2019/2020 academic year, all teaching and learning activities should be rolled on-line for the rest of the semester.

    He said the UPSA Learning Management System (UPSA LMS) was, therefore, deployed on Wednesday, March 18.

    He said to enable faculty, staff and students unlimited access to the LMS; Management also made arrangements with Vodafone Ghana to offer free data access to the UPSA LMS platform.

    Prof Amartey said the make-up lessons were held on-line for the next four weeks, followed by supplementary or mop-up and take-home assignments, which ended on July 31.

    The Vice-Chancellor urged the graduating students to join the UPSA Alumni Association and give back to their alma mater.

    “Be our goodwill ambassadors at the market place and market our University as ‘the place to belong’. Through the Alumni Association, you can contribute to transforming UPSA into a home-grown Harvard, Oxford or Yale.”

    Dr Kofi Ohene-Konadu, the Chairman of the UPSA Governing Council, congratulated Prof. Amartey on his reapportionment by the Council for a second term, which begins on January 1, 2021.

    He urged the Vice-Chancellor to be strong in the execution of his mandate in his second term.

    Mrs Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, the Director of Public Prosecution at the Ministry of Justice and Attorney-General, who was the guest speaker, told the graduating students that the journey to the top in their chosen careers required perseverance, honesty and sacrifices.

  • UPSA Governing Council re-appoints Prof Okoe Amartey as Vice-Chancellor

    The Governing Council of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has announced the reappointment of Professor Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey as Vice-Chancellor at a special meeting of the Council of the University held on Monday, August 3, 2020.

    Members of the Council unanimously approved a second term for the Vice-Chancellor from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2024.

    Professor Amartey has been Vice-Chancellor of the University since January 2017 and has a long and exemplary track record as a visionary leader in higher education. His reappointment follows a rigorous process that included appraisals, interviews, consultations with staff, students, alumni and all relevant stakeholders from across the wider University community.

    The general consensus amongst all stakeholders engaged indicates that Prof. Amartey is a leader true to the mission, values and ethos of UPSA.

    Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Kofi Ohene-Konadu said “I am delighted to announce the reappointment of Professor Amartey to continue his good work as our Vice-Chancellor. This unanimous approval by all stakeholders is a testament to the remarkable work Prof. Amartey has done and as we congratulate him, we urge him not to become complacent but to continue the good work and work even harder.”

    Commenting on his reappointment, Professor Amartey said: “I feel enormously humbled and privileged to be reappointed to serve another term as Vice-Chancellor.

  • UPSA thumps GIJ in Newsroom semifinal cliffhanger

    University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) put up a gutsy performance to trounce Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) for a place at the grand finale in the ongoing Newsroom competition.

    In a tension-packed three-round clash, GIJ who were defending champions, took a 10-point lead in the first round, setting the stage for an adrenaline-popping encounter. UPSA closed the gap by 8 marks in the second round, making the third round, a do-or-die affair.

    With flair, panache, breathtaking oratory skills and ego-shattering rebuttals, the two schools made the most of their opportunities in the debate, but it was UPSA that savoured the ultimate.

    UPSA Vice-Chancellor urges traditional leaders to champion development

    Having lost to GIJ in an explosive grand finale in the maiden edition of the newsroom competition in 2015, UPSA came into today’s contest with revenge on their minds, but GIJ swore a repeat dose. In the end, the former had the last laugh.

    GIJ has won all editions, but this year, they have missed out on the grand finale. They however have an opportunity to redeem their image in the third-place contest where they’ll meet African University College of Communications on Friday.

    UPSA and Wisconsin International University College will do battle for the diadem on Tuesday.

    The Newsroom competition is a simulated news writing, integrated communication and debating contest among communication faculties aimed at synthesising theory with practice.

    UPSA introduces programmes in Branding, Entrepreneurship & Security

    This year’s edition, the 4th of its kind, is holding at the University of Professional Studies, Accra.

    The Newsroom Competition is organized by Accra-based integrated communications firm, Cheetah Communications. This is the fourth edition since its commencement in 2015.
