Rooney blames Liverpool’s current form on ‘poor leadership’ by Salah,Virgil

Winners of last year’s Premier League title have had an inconsistent form this season, having lost five out of nine games.

In their last match against Brentford, they suffered a 2-3 loss, prompting a reaction from former Man Utd forward and the club’s all-time leading goal scorer, Rooney.

Speaking in the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney Show, the five-time Premier League winner said the body language of captain Virgil van Dijk and talismanic forward Mohamed Salah during Liverpool’s troubled spell was a “big concern”.

He believes that the duo have signed a contract extension with the club, but their posture this season does not reflect that of good leadership, one that is in charge, citing that as one of the reasons behind the team’s struggles.

“This is a time when the manager and the leaders in the team need to figure it out very quickly. Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah they’ve signed new deals, but I don’t think they’ve really led that team this season. I think body language tells you a lot, and I think we’re seeing slightly different body language from the two of them. They are the top two players in that team, and if their body language is not right, that affects everyone else,” he said.

On his part, the team is clearly having a hard time overcoming their struggles, as they never anticipated such results, which have now placed them seventh in the Premier League table. He has called on the leadership of Liverpool to treat the team’s current form with urgency.

The Reds have lost four consecutive Premier League matches and are now seven points behind leaders Arsenal.

“No one has seen this coming; it’s hit them quick, it’s hit them hard, and I think they’re struggling to find a way out of it,” he added.

“I might be wrong on this, but if I were a Liverpool fan or the manager, that would be a big concern for me.”

Meanwhile, Rooney has been quite vocal about Man Utd’s form. Man Utd have had a disappointing run since Amorim’s takeover from Eric ten Hag.

According to Rooney, he sees faith in Ruben Amorim to turn things around at Manchester United and believes the soul has gone from his former club.

“I just don’t know what’s going on. I have tried my hand at management, and it didn’t work out too well, so I get it. Ruben Amorim is my age, he’s still a young manager, and I’m sure he’s got a massive future, but what’s going on at Man Utd, this is not Man Utd. I honestly hope he can turn it around, and he does. But… after everything I’ve seen, honestly, I’ve got no faith in it,” he said on his BBC podcast.

However, Man Utd has won its last three matches. After their second win in a row, speaking during his post-match press conference, Amorim stated that,

“It’s everything combined for the fans if you ask them on two wins in a row after so many years, it is really important for me that it is back-to-back; it doesn’t matter about the opponent, it is just the feeling of winning.”

But he said his focus was to achieve a three-in-a-row win as Man Utd gear up for their Premier League Matchweek 9 match with Brighton on Saturday, 25 October at Old Trafford, 17:30 BST (16:30 UTC).

“The important thing is to think three in a row and that’s the focus”, Amorim said to the BBC after the game.”

Before this back-to-back win, Head coach Amorim had taken just 34 points from his 33 Premier League games in charge. But his record as of October 20 put him just a point above his previous.

Man Utd lost for the fourth game in a row in all competitions, but for Amorim, bagging two EPL wins in a row was an important mark chalked in his first full season at the club.

However, it appears Amorim’s tactics, which came under heavy criticism, are producing the results he anticipated they would.

Rooney’s former club are also enjoying a resurgence, with a 4-2 win over Brighton making it three on the trot and lifting them to sixth place, level on points with Manchester City and one clear of Liverpool.

Part of that success has been down to the form of forward Bryan Mbeumo, who has scored three of his five goals in the last two games.

Rooney admitted he was not convinced when United brought him to the club in the summer for £65m from Brentford, but said the 26-year-old Cameroon international is now living up to expectations.

“His energy, his work-rate, his desire, is what you need to be a United player. I did say that I was a little bit unsure, but I think what he’s shown is he belongs there,” added Rooney.

“He’s been consistent with his performances, I think that’s the main thing. If you’re consistently getting into the right positions and getting chances, you will score 20 goals a season.”

On September 14, Man Utd suffered an embarrassing defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The Reds lost against their rivals in a 0-3 derby with a brace from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.

Speaking in a post-match conference, Amorim addressed some mistakes made by his side, highlighting the confused state of the players at times. According to him, some goals could have been avoided, but he admits he made poor decisions during the game.

On his tactical philosophy, which has come under massive attack, particularly after the derby defeat against City, he reiterated that he will not change it. Some critics have slammed him for his 3-4-3 setup, which appears to be affecting players like Bruno Fernandes or Benjamin Šešk, given United’s current position on the league table.

“It’s not a record that you should have at Manchester United… But I’m not going to change. When I want to change my philosophy, I will change. If not, you have to change the man.”

Rooney admits he’s lost faith in Amorim, Man Utd is dying

Former Man Utd forward and the club’s all-time leading goal scorer, Wayne Rooney has expressed his frustration about the club’s current state, highlighting that his faith in Amorim’s leadership is dead now.

Wayne Rooney made these comments on a BBC podcast, which was aired on September 29, following Manchester United’s 3-1 loss to Brentford on September 27.

Man Utd appointed Ruben Amorim in November, and for about ten months now, the Reds haven’t seen any significant revival in their fortunes. The team keep regressing when fans anticipated a turnaround after the dismissal of Erik ten Hag in October 2024 for his poor run. Head coach Amorim has taken just 34 points from his 33 Premier League games in charge.

Despite the ongoing poor form, which includes last month’s Carabao Cup exit at League Two Grimsby, Amorim reportedly retains the backing of United’s board.

United endured their worst Premier League campaign last season, finishing 15th, their lowest position since they were relegated from the old First Division in 1974.

He fumed over players’ dead desire to fight and win, adding that he goes to games expecting the team to lose and feels some players do not deserve to represent the club.

“I don’t recognise the whole football club. I don’t see players fighting, I don’t see character, I don’t see desire to win. I go to a game watching… expecting the team to lose or maybe pick up a point. The soul has gone from the club. It needs a new engine, a new lease of life. It needs something to kickstart that football club. What is going on? This is not all on the manager, by the way. Players, they’re not deserving to wear that shirt, and it hurts.”

With passion, he spoke about how the culture of the club has died, citing how people on the sidelines are quitting and others being laid off; everything shows this is not the Man Utd he knows. Expressing fears about the potential of it affecting his two children, who are currently enrolled in the club’s academy.

“The culture of that football club has gone,” added the former England captain. I see it daily, I see staff losing jobs, people walking out of jobs. I’ve got two kids [in the academy] at that football club, and I really hope this doesn’t affect what they’re doing -what I’m seeing at that football club is not Manchester United

United, who sit 14th in the table, return to action on Saturday at home to Sunderland before travelling to leaders Liverpool after the October international break.

Rooney has been quite vocal about his former club’s status recently. Manchester United suffered an embarrassing defeat to Manchester City yesterday, Sunday, 14 September at the Etihad Stadium. The Reds lost against their rivals in a 0-3 derby with a brace from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.

He mentioned that fans were so disappointed that they began to leave the stadium with chants of Amorim’s name. There are no signs of recovery for the once celebrated and results-oriented Man Utd that had its name on the lips of fans all the time.

“I think if the manager is honest with himself, it has got worse. I want to be as supportive and positive as I can be with the manager and the players. But it is very difficult to sit here and say we are seeing progression, and at least we’re seeing things that will get results in the near future.

“I think after the last year when Ten Hag got sacked and Ruben came in, we’re hearing how they’re going to play and it is going to change,” said Rooney, who scored 253 goals for United between 2004 and 2017.

“We’re seeing none of that, and it is very difficult. There was an image towards the end of the game where I saw the Manchester United fans leaving. You could hear the fans singing Amorim’s name, but I think that is so powerful that the United fans were leaving the game. You know the game is over, and I think they were very disappointed in what they were seeing. It is hard to see how it continues”, he questioned.

He went on to question, “What are the patterns? What are we seeing that might improve the team moving forward?”

United finished 15th in the league last term with 42 points, their lowest position since 1989–90. They earned their fewest points in a top-flight season since they were last relegated in 1973–74.Since Amorim’s arrival, they have spent about £250m on new signings, while shipping out most of their so-called ‘bomb squad’.

This has allowed the 40-year-old coach to revamp his side into a 3-4-3 system that he has vowed not to deviate from after enjoying success with Sporting.

Wayne Rooney steps in to save Kyle Walker’s failing marriage – Source

Wayne Rooney has reportedly become a supportive figure for Annie Kilner, the wife of Kyle Walker, after spending time with her and his family on a holiday in Dubai.

According to Heat World, Kilner is already good friends with Rooney’s wife, Coleen, but it was Wayne who stepped in as a trusted confidante during the trip.

Rooney was in Dubai mainly for a football coaching camp, which Kilner and Walker’s son attended. Having faced similar challenges in his own marriage, Rooney is said to have offered encouragement, reminding Kilner that life as the wife of a football star comes with its difficulties.

A source told Heat World: “Wayne has become like Annie’s big brother. Her boys love him and he’s offered to help in any way he can. Normally, it’s Annie and Coleen hanging out while Kyle and Wayne pair up, but because Kyle wasn’t in Dubai, Annie spent more time chatting to Wayne and he was giving her good advice and support.

Obviously, Wayne’s been the one in the wrong in the past, but he explained that it’s not always easy being a footballer in the limelight. He told her Kyle is really missing her and the boys, and is desperate for them to make it work.”

Walker and Kilner’s marriage has reportedly been unstable since news broke that he had fathered two children with his ex-mistress, Lauryn Goodman. However, it seems that their divorce proceedings have been put on hold for now.

In January, Walker moved on loan from Manchester City to AC Milan, and Kilner has reportedly been offered a reality show about her life in Italy.

  • Wayne Rooney thinks Sir Alex Ferguson still remains greater than Pep

Wayne Rooney thinks Sir Alex Ferguson still remains greater than Pep

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes that his former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, maintains superiority over Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola in the realm of managerial greatness.

This season, Guardiola guided City to their fourth consecutive Premier League title, an accomplishment unmatched by Ferguson or any other team in English football history.

This extends Guardiola’s tally to six Premier League titles in his eight seasons with Manchester City.

Nevertheless, Guardiola’s achievement falls short of Ferguson’s record of 13 championships during his illustrious 26-year tenure at Manchester United.

“I think of course there are going to be arguments as to who is better, but I think people tend to just look at what Sir Alex did at Manchester United, and what he did at Aberdeen was incredible,” Rooney said in an interview with ESPN Brasil.

“And you’d ask the question: could Guardiola do that at a team like Aberdeen?

“There’s questions, there’s debate, and I think Guardiola for his era is of course the best and he’s changed the way football is played worldwide… but yeah for me, Sir Alex, what he achieved in the game is incredible.”

Before joining Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson achieved remarkable success with Aberdeen, winning three Scottish titles and disrupting the long-standing dominance of Celtic and Rangers.

Notably, he led Aberdeen to a memorable victory over Real Madrid in the 1983 European Cup Winners’ Cup final.

In contrast, Pep Guardiola has a 3-2 edge over Ferguson in Champions League titles, having won two with Barcelona and one last season as part of a treble with Manchester City.

Wayne Rooney, who played under Ferguson for nine years and became Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer, has expressed great respect for Guardiola. Earlier this year, Rooney even suggested he would be open to working as Guardiola’s assistant.

“If Pep Guardiola comes in and asks me to be his assistant, you’d walk there,” Rooney told the Stick to Football podcast.
“You see what [Mikel] Arteta is doing now [at Arsenal] and I strongly believe a lot of that is from learning what Guardiola was doing, and so it depends on what the situation is.

“For me, the best manager is Pep and you look at how he adapts — how they [City] are playing now is not the same as how they were playing four years ago.”

Since then, Rooney has returned to management, taking on the role of head coach for English Championship side Plymouth Argyle ahead of the upcoming season.

  • This is why David Moyes sued Wayne Rooney after joining Manchester United

This is why David Moyes sued Wayne Rooney after joining Manchester United

Iconic figure of Manchester United, Wayne Rooney, shed light on the legal dispute initiated by David Moyes in 2008, years after Rooney’s transition from Everton to the Red Devils.

Moyes played a pivotal role in Rooney’s early career, providing him with his senior team debut at Everton in 2002. Rooney swiftly ascended to stardom, displaying his exceptional talent on the pitch.

However, tensions arose in 2004 when Rooney made a high-profile transfer to Manchester United for a then-record fee of £30 million, straining his relationship with his former manager.

The rift between Rooney and Moyes reached its peak in 2008 when Moyes took legal action against Rooney over allegations made in the player’s autobiography, “My Story So Far.”

In the memoir, Rooney accused Moyes of disclosing details of a private conversation regarding his departure plans from Everton.

Moyes vehemently disputed the allegation and filed a libel suit against Rooney. In response, Rooney and Harper Collins retracted the claims and publicly apologized to Moyes.

Additionally, the publisher agreed to pay substantial damages to Moyes, which he subsequently donated to the Everton Former Players Foundation.

In a candid interview with Gary Neville on “The Overlap” Rooney expressed his regret over the incident. “David Moyes was really good for me at Everton,” Rooney said.

“He sued me after I left the club—I hammered him when I left because of how I felt at the time. I regret that.

I spoke to him a few years after I left, I called him up and apologized because the older you get, you realize why he was doing things. It was new to him to have a player getting all those headlines, for him to figure out.

He was a young manager at the time, it was new to him. When I look back, he was good for me, he was constantly on me. He was trying to not let me think that I was better than I was.

I was a handful in my youth. In the indoor gym, I was launching rockets from one end to the other. Moysey walked in when I was just 16.”

Following the resolution of the legal dispute, Moyes expressed his relief and satisfaction. “Anyone who knows me well would, I hope, regard me as a man of honour and integrity,” Moyes stated.

“I was disappointed and wanted people to know that what had been written was completely untrue.

I felt that I had no choice but to take action for a full apology and damages. Having accepted these, I do not intend to make any financial gain from this and shall give that to the Everton Former Players Foundation”.

Rooney’s acknowledgment underscores how time can offer clarity regarding past choices and behaviors.

His introspections highlight the significance of mentorship and its influence on young athletes coping with the demands of celebrity and competition.

Notably, Rooney reunited with Moyes as his manager during the 2013-14 season at Manchester United. Presently, Rooney serves as the manager of Plymouth Argyle, while Moyes is unattached following his departure from West Ham.

  • Rooney likely to get Plymouth job

Rooney likely to get Plymouth job

Wayne Rooney is poised to be officially announced as the head coach of Championship side Plymouth Argyle on Saturday following discussions regarding the vacant position.

At 38 years old, Rooney is eager to rebuild his coaching reputation after a challenging stint at Birmingham last season, where he suffered nine losses out of 15 matches.

Plymouth Argyle has been in search of a new manager since the departure of Ian Foster towards the end of the previous season. Director of football Neil Dewsnip and coach Kevin Nancekivell assumed interim roles for the remainder of the campaign, successfully steering Plymouth to safety, ironically at the expense of Birmingham.

Dewsnip’s familiarity with Rooney from their time together at Everton‘s academy likely played a role in the decision-making process.

Rooney boasts an extensive playing career, amassing 763 appearances for clubs such as Everton, Manchester United, MLS side DC United, and Derby County.

Transitioning into coaching, Rooney took on a player-coach role at Derby in November 2020, eventually assuming the permanent managerial position. However, he announced his retirement just two months later.

During his tenure at Derby, Rooney oversaw 85 matches before returning to the United States to manage his former club, DC United. Subsequently, he took the helm at Birmingham in October 2023 but was dismissed less than three months later.

Rooney says there’s no longer any enjoyment in the game thanks to VAR

Former England captain Wayne Rooney would support the removal of video assistant referees (VAR), as Premier League clubs prepare to vote on rejecting the technology.

The decision on whether to scrap VAR for the upcoming season will be made at the league’s annual general meeting next month. Wolves have officially put forward a resolution to trigger the vote during the meeting of the 20 member clubs in Harrogate on 6 June.

Rooney, speaking on Sky Sports, expressed his preference for football without VAR, echoing sentiments shared by many in the sport.

“I don’t like VAR and if it’s there and they get all the decisions right then fair enough but it’s taken all the enjoyment out of the game,” he told Sky Sports.

“If you’re a goalscorer and you score a goal you have to wait to celebrate and the fans are having to wait to celebrate. It’s wrong.

“You’re better off letting referees ref it and understand they will make mistakes. I’d much rather see the game without it.”

Former Manchester United and Newcastle forward Andy Cole also said the technology has failed to improve the game.

“It’s spoiled the game. There’s far too much controversy surrounding it,” he said on Sky Sports. “They said it was going to make the game better but it’s made the game worse. It’s taken a lot of entertainment out of the game – celebrating a goal.”

  • Everyone must be gone except Fernandes – Wayne Rooney

Everyone must be gone except Fernandes – Wayne Rooney

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has said a “massive clearout” is needed at Old Trafford in the summer and added that he believes the team should be built around captain Bruno Fernandes.

United are eighth in the Premier League going into the final day of the season on Sunday and are at risk of missing out on European football altogether for next year.

Fernandes has been a standout performer this season and is United’s top scorer in the league with 10 goals and has registered more assists (7) than any other player at the club.

“You have to build around Bruno. He’s the one player with quality. He has got fight in him. I think you keep the young players and Bruno. I think it has to be a massive clearout, it has to be. It’s not going to be in one year but it’s got to be over the next couple of years,” Rooney said on Sky Sports on Wednesday.

“To compete in this league, they need better players and don’t get me wrong, these players are good players and Premier League players. But to compete with Manchester City, with Liverpool, with Arsenal they need better players.”

On Marcus Rashford, Rooney said: “We all know Marcus has got the capabilities to play at the top level. I just wonder if, for Marcus himself, is it time to go play elsewhere? I don’t know.

“I think he has to ask himself that question. I want him to stay, to break records at this club. But he needs to get his head right, get his head down and get back to the player we know he can be.”

“It wasn’t an easy season, but one thing remained constant, and it was the backing of you for the team,” Ten Hag said.

“The season is not over yet. Now, first we will travel to Brighton for three points and then we go to Wembley.

“And I promise you that those players will give everything, to get that cup, to win the cup, and bring it to Old Trafford.

“And be assured, you will be there supporting us. Thank you, you are the best supporters in the world, thank you.”

Rooney wishes to take charge of Man Utd in the next ten years

Wayne Rooney has expressed his eagerness to swiftly return to management following his dismissal by Birmingham City in January.

He has outlined his aspirations to manage either Manchester United or Everton within the next decade.

The former United and England forward’s tenure at Birmingham City lasted just three months before his termination. During this brief period, the club suffered nine defeats in fifteen games.

Despite that harrowing experience, Rooney remains undeterred by management.

“Managing Manchester United or Everton is the aim, these big jobs are where you want to get to,” Rooney said on Match of the Day, where he was working as an analyst for United’s FA Cup game against Nottingham Forest.

“But it’s a process; I have got to go through the steps and get myself back on track. I want to get myself back into management to make sure that in the next 10 years I’m hopefully in a position to go into one of the big jobs.”

  • Wayne Rooney speaks after Birmingham’s poor form

Wayne Rooney speaks after Birmingham’s poor form

Amidst significant excitement, Tom Brady and Wayne Rooney made their arrival in Birmingham, but the once-eager cheers have now transformed into jeers from the home supporters.

After securing NFL legend Tom Brady as an investor, the West Midlands-based team devised ambitious plans. Additionally, they enlisted the managerial expertise of Manchester United and England icon Wayne Rooney.

When Rooney took charge, the club was comfortably positioned within the Championship play-off places.

However, the initial optimism has given way to disappointment as the team has encountered a challenging stretch, suffering six defeats in nine games and managing only one victory.

This downturn has resulted in a significant drop to 17th place in the standings.

A 2-0 defeat at Coventry was met by jeers from the travelling support, with Rooney saying of that reaction and what needs to be done in order to deliver a reversal in fortune: “We’re in a difficult place; we know that, with the run of results and the points we’re losing. The big thing is that the goals we’re conceding are very poor goals. We have to figure it out and make sure we don’t give easy goals away.

“The run of form can’t continue. Of course, I understand the fans’ frustration. That’s normal when you go through a run of results like this and we have to change this as quickly as possible. If I were a fan in the stands there tonight, I would be exactly the same. But what I can tell you is we’re working really hard to fix it, to improve results and performances.”

Birmingham have been leaking goals at an alarming rate, with Rooney adding to a team that has collected just one clean sheet during his tenure: “We are getting punished when we’re making mistakes and we need to cut that out. Throughout the 90 minutes, Coventry were the better team, so they deserved to win the game.

“We let ourselves down with the goals we conceded. That’s my responsibility; it’s on me to get the players to perform better and pick up more points than we have done. It’s disappointing when you concede goals that are avoidable.”

Birmingham is set to resume play on Wednesday with an away game against Cardiff.

The Bluebirds are currently vying for a play-off spot, and the extent of support that Tom Brady and the Blues board can provide for reinforcements at St. Andrew’s during the January transfer window remains uncertain.

  • Wayne Rooney lands Tom Brady-owned Birmingham coaching role

Wayne Rooney lands Tom Brady-owned Birmingham coaching role

Wayne Rooney is set to make a managerial return in England, having been named as the manager of Championship club Birmingham City for a contract spanning three and a half years, as announced by the club on Wednesday.

The former Manchester United icon left his position as head coach of D.C. United on Sunday, following the team’s failure to secure a spot in the Major League Soccer playoffs for the second consecutive season. He has now taken up the role at Birmingham, a club where NFL legend Tom Brady was revealed to have become a minority owner and advisory board chair back in August.

Joining Rooney’s coaching staff are two of his former teammates, Ashley Cole, with whom he played for the England national team, and John O’Shea, with whom he shared the pitch during their time at Manchester United.

“I have been building my managerial career, putting myself in challenging environments, to get me ready for this opportunity,” Rooney said in a statement. It’s a project that gives me a sense of purpose and I can’t wait to get started.”

Rooney steps in as the new manager, taking over from John Eustace. Eustace had Birmingham City in sixth place in the Championship, having secured five wins in their first 11 games. However, his 15-month tenure as manager came to an end on Monday.

Eustace’s tenure with Birmingham was marked by challenging circumstances, including two unsuccessful takeover attempts and the looming possibility of a points deduction due to a breach of EFL regulations, which he successfully navigated to help the team avoid relegation in the previous season.

“Wayne is a born winner,” Birmingham co-owner Tom Wagner said. “We believe, with the support of his coaching staff, the club, and our supporters, he will take Blues forward on the next stage of our journey. His playing philosophy will help us realise the ambitions we have set for Birmingham City.

“Wayne has been preparing for an opportunity like this since he embarked on his coaching education while still a player at Manchester United. He and his staff have the full support of the board and everyone at the football club.”

Wayne Rooney has prior experience managing in the Championship, with his inaugural coaching role at Derby County spanning from January 2021 to June 2022.

During his tenure at Derby, he steered the club from the bottom of the championship to safety shortly after his arrival. However, in his first full season in charge, the team faced a significant setback due to a 21-point deduction.

Notably, the 55 points that Derby accumulated that season would have typically secured their safety in any other championship campaign.

Rooney assumed the role of head coach at D.C. United in July 2022 after previously playing for the club. In his first season, he couldn’t prevent the team from finishing at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

Subsequently, he guided the club to an improved ninth-place finish in 2023, although it fell short of securing a playoff berth.

Rooney’s departure from D.C. United was announced right after their last game of the regular season, which resulted in a 2-0 loss to New York City FC.

It’s worth noting that Wayne Rooney holds the record as Manchester United’s leading scorer with 253 goals, and earlier this year, he was surpassed by Harry Kane as England’s all-time leading goal scorer.

  • Wayne Rooney joins in talks surrounding Rice’s move to Arsenal

Wayne Rooney joins in talks surrounding Rice’s move to Arsenal

Wayne Rooney has high expectations for Declan Rice, as he believes the England international must step up as a “leader” following his record-breaking transfer fee of £105m ($137m) from West Ham to Arsenal.

Rice showcased his talent in Arsenal’s 5-0 victory against the MLS All-Stars during their first friendly match in the United States.

Rooney, who was coaching the DC United team, was impressed by Rice’s performance and expressed his belief that the midfielder will become a “huge player” for Arsenal at the Emirates.

“I think could be the one who could… well, he has to be the leader now, really, I think of that Arsenal team,” he told the Press Association.

“I saw Frank Lampard saying he felt Declan could be the Chelsea captain for the next 10 years if he went there.

“I think he can do that [for Arsenal] and he seems to have that character and I believe he will be a huge player for Arsenal,” he added.

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has also put his weight behind Rice and insisted that Arsenal have the potential to win the 2023-24 Premier League after landing the midfielder.

The Gunners have revamped their squad and have also made major signings such as Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber as well as the 24-year-old.

  • Harry Kane, the ‘prisoner’ man Utd needs the most, says Wayne Rooney

Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney joked that Tottenham are keeping Harry Kane ‘prisoner’ as speculation over his future rumbles on.

In an interview with The Athletic, Rooney jokingly stated that Kane was being held captive by Tottenham, but believes the England striker would be an ideal signing for his old club United this summer.

“I thought it was time to go last season and he stayed,” Rooney said. “Harry’s probably feeling that and knows there are trophies out there for him to win. He has done everything he can for that to try and be at Tottenham.

“Now probably is right for him to move on and it looks like he’s ready for that as well, but we know Tottenham can be quite difficult at times.”

This summer, like every other summer of late, speculation is rife that Kane will leave Tottenham. He’s been linked with moves to United, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich since the 2022-23 season ended.

The player needs to decide his future sooner rather than later. At 29, Kane knows that his next decision will define the rest of his career, so he needs to make the correct call.

  • The Messi, Ronaldo reign is over – Wayne Rooney names new best player now

The Messi, Ronaldo reign is over – Wayne Rooney names new best player now

Erling Haaland has been named by Wayne Rooney as the likely successor to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, signalling the end of the GOAT duo’s period.

Since switching from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City, Haaland has been on fire, shattering nearly every goal-scoring record in England and, by extension, Europe.

According to Transfermarkt, the Norwegian goal scorer has amassed an incredible 48 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions while also dishing out six assists, underscoring his outstanding play this season.

It thus comes as no surprise that Rooney reckons that Haaland is by far the best footballer on the planet presently.

“Erling Haaland is the best footballer in the world right now. Lionel Messi is the greatest but, at this moment, nobody is playing better than a striker who — even though I broke records in that position myself — takes my breath away with the levels he’s reaching,” the legendary Manchester United forward wrote in his column for The Times via Sportskeeda.

Rooney stressed: “He’s the best in the world because of the numbers he’s posting, the performances he’s putting in and the mentality he shows.”

    Ronaldo and Messi era

The pair have shot their way to the top of the ‘greatest of all time’ conversation; no matter who you are, everyone has a preference – winning a combined 12 Ballon d’Or awards.

Some wonder at the machine-like athletic relentlessness of Cristiano Ronaldo’s out-and-out goalscoring, while others are lured by Lionel Messi’s God-given enchantment with the ball at his feet.

    What’s next for Haaland?

The 22-year-old will hope to continue his breathtaking goalscoring form for Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s charges chase the treble, with the club still in contention to win the English Premier League, the Emirates FA Cup and the elusive UEFA Champions League.

    Cassano contradicts Rooney, blasts Haaland

While Rooney lauded Haaland, former Real Madrid striker Antonio Cassano has once again stirred up the hornet’s nest, this time training his guns on the Man City striker, Sports Brief reported.

The retired Italian international has claimed that the Manchester City striker does not know how to play football.

Going by Haaland’s numbers this season alone, it seems quite ironic for Cassano to level such a claim, but he insists he prefers strikers like Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema.

  • MLS All-Stars to face Arsenal with Rooney as coach

MLS All-Stars to face Arsenal with Rooney as coach

In a friendly match in July, Arsenal will take on the MLS All-Stars, who will be coached by Wayne Rooney.

A team made up of players from all over the league assembles for the annual MLS All-Star Game to play a rival.

The MLS All-Stars have faced a Liga MX All-Stars team for the past two years, with the American top division’s team winning both times.

The MLS All-Stars will, however, play a European club once more in the 2023 edition when Arsenal makes a second appearance in the exhibition match.

The Gunners beat an All-Stars side that included Andrea Pirlo, Kaka, Didier Drogba and David Villa 2-1 in San Jose in 2016.

This year’s match will be held at Audi Field in Washington, D.C, with England’s joint-record goalscorer Rooney – who coaches D.C. United in MLS – set to take charge of the All-Stars.

“I’ve had a front-row seat to watch the growth and development of Major League Soccer, first as a player and now as a manager,” said Rooney in a statement.

“The opportunity to lead the best our league has to offer against a top Premier League club like Arsenal will be a highlight for me personally and an unforgettable experience for our passionate fanbase here in D.C.”

Mikel Arteta said: “It’s great that we’re playing against the MLS All-Stars in Washington D.C. in July.

“Our US tour [in 2022] was very good preparation for the season, and we’re looking forward to once again visiting our amazing supporters in the US. The match against the MLS All-Stars will be a good test ahead of the 2023-24 season.”

On July 18, 10 Arsenal players will also go up against 10 MLS players in the Skills Challenge, which will again be held at Audi Field.

Arsenal are eight points clear at the top of the Premier League with 10 games remaining, while Rooney’s D.C. United are 11th in the Eastern Conference in MLS with four points from as many games this season.

  • Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney takes swipe at Ghanaian MP over Maguire criticisms

Former Manchester United forward, Wayne Rooney has described the mockery of Harry Marguire in the Ghanaian Parliament as crazy.

Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central Constituency, Honourable Isaac Adongo compared Maguire’s performance for the Devil Reds to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s handling of the Ghanaian economy.

Honourable Adongo went viral for claiming Dr Bawumia is an economic Maguire.

“Harry Maguire, he’s a defender. He was tackling everybody and throwing his body everywhere,” Adongo said in Parliament.

“He was seen as the best defender in the world. Manchester United went and bought him. He became the biggest threat at the centre of the Manchester United defence, tackling Manchester players and giving assists to opponents.

“Mr. Speaker, you remember in this country we also have an economic Maguire. We’re clapping saying this man is the best in managing foreign terms. Mr Speaker why we gave this Maguire the opportunity to be at the centre of our defence? He became the rest of our own goals. Our economic Maguire is taking control of the fundamentals of our economy and destroying all of them.”

Rooney responded to the MP’s joke, claiming Maguire has been at his best at the World Cup in Qatar.

“On social media this week I saw someone in the Ghanaian parliament making fun of Harry Maguire. It was crazy, because Harry has been outstanding at this World Cup. I predicted he would do well – because he always does well for England and never lets Gareth Southgate down. He’s simply a very good defender with a strong mentality,” he told The Times.

  • Rooney unsurprised by Ronaldo’s United exit

Wayne Rooney was not surprised by Manchester United’s decision to part company with Cristiano Ronaldo, saying the club had “no other choice”.

Ronaldo’s United departure seemed inevitable when he gave an explosive interview to Piers Morgan, saying the club had “betrayed” him and declaring he did not respect manager Erik ten Hag.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also used the interview to attack several former United players who had criticised his conduct this season.

Rooney labelled Ronaldo’s actions an “unwanted distraction” after he was suspended by United for refusing to come on as a substitute in last month’s win over Tottenham, comments the Portugal forward subsequently said were rooted in jealousy.

On Tuesday, United announced Ronaldo had left the club by mutual agreement, a decision Rooney believes was inevitable.

Speaking to Sports 18 following the club’s announcement, Rooney said: “Am I surprised? No.

“There was no other choice, but that’s a shame because he’s been a fantastic servant to the club. I wish him the best wherever he goes.”

Ronaldo, 37, leaves United having scored 145 goals across two spells at Old Trafford, though he only found the net once for the Red Devils in the Premier League this campaign.

  • Rooney backs Kane to smash England record at World Cup

England’s all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney hopes Harry Kane smashes his record during the World Cup.

Kane heads to the tournament with 51 goals for the Three Lions, two behind Rooney’s record hail, with the pair standing as the only England players to have hit the half-century mark.

Having scored six times in Russia four years ago to win the Golden Boot, Kane will be confident of surpassing Rooney’s tally in Qatar.

While others may wish to hold onto such a record, Rooney is fully behind Kane taking a record that is “there to be broken”.

“I’m delighted for him, I think he’ll go on and smash the record, I think he’ll end up on 70-odd goals,” Ronney told TalkSPORT.

“He deserves it for the work he puts in. It’s a huge honour to have the record but the record is there to be broken and I couldn’t think of anyone better to take that record.

“Hopefully, he gets it during this World Cup because it will mean he’s doing well for England.”

Kane was one of the sure-fire picks for Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad, which was named on Thursday, though the England manager’s selection of Harry Maguire has come under some criticism.

Rooney, who took up a coaching role with D.C. United in MLS earlier this year, believes Southgate has made the right choice in picking the Manchester United centre-back, though he questioned the exclusion of Milan’s Fikayo Tomori.

“Harry has been great in the last two tournaments. When I was in the squad, Gareth reiterated to me that he is picking players on form and I wasn’t playing, so I didn’t get picked, but he seems to have gone away from that now,” he added.

“There’s a couple of players within the squad who haven’t been playing but I think Harry is a very good professional, he’ll start the games, I have no doubt, and I’m sure he won’t let England down.

“The squad is probably as strong as it could be, if I’m being honest. The only one really is Tomori, from my point of view. He was the one who was pushing to be in the squad, and he will be disappointed that he is not. Everything else is really what I expected.

“With Maguire not playing as much as he wants, I think Southgate might go for the protection with three centre-backs and that is obviously why he’s gone with Eric Dier ahead of Tomori, because he fits into the back three.

“I hope we go for four [at the back] and get an extra attacker on the pitch but I think he might go for the back three.”

England kick-off their group stage campaign against Iran on November 21, then tackle the United States and Wales in Group B.

  • Wagatha Christie case: Rebekah Vardy loses libel trial against Coleen Rooney

It was Rebekah Vardy who took Coleen Rooney to court, saying she had suffered “very serious harm to her reputation” as a result of allegations that she had leaked stories to The Sun newspaper. Rooney defended the claim on the basis of truth and that it was in the public interest.

Rebekah Vardy has lost her Wagatha Christie libel trial against Coleen Rooney.

Judge Justice Steyn said she accepted that Rooney’s reveal post was “a matter of public interest” due to “the undesirable practice of information (in the nature of mere gossip) about celebrities’ private lives being disclosed to the press by trusted individuals”.

Vardy had sued Rooney after being publicly accused of leaking “false stories” to the media in 2019, with the high-profile trial taking place at the High Court in London in May.

The wife of former England star Wayne Rooney was dubbed “Wagatha Christie” after claiming that three fake stories posted on her personal Instagram page – which unbeknown to Vardy at the time were shared only with her account – were passed on to The Sun newspaper.

Wayne and Coleen Rooney leave the Royal Courts Of Justice, London, as the high-profile libel battle between Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney finally goes to trial. Picture date: Tuesday May 10, 2022.

Vardy, who is married to Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, denied leaking the stories and recalled to the court how she thought she might pass out when she first heard about Rooney’s allegations – which came when she was heavily pregnant.

Later in the trial, she became upset several times while answering questions in the witness box about the online trolling she and her family received as a result of the claims.

However, the court also heard details of text messages she exchanged with her agent which appeared to show them discussing leaking stories about other celebrities and footballers to the press.

  • Wayne Rooney announces retirement from football

Wayne Rooney the football player is now a football manager after being hired by Derby County on a permanent basis.

The 35-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half year deal to take charge of the Rams until the summer of 2023. They are currently in the Championship relegation zone.

And as a direct result of the appointment, Rooney has announced his decision to retire from playing with immediate effect to concentrate solely on the role.

Rooney’s retirement from playing brings down the curtain on an illustrious career in which he became record goalscorer for the England national team and won every conceivable honour with Manchester United.

Emerging as a precocious 17-year-old at boyhood club Everton, Rooney quickly became one of the finest players of his generation for club and country.

Shouldering an intense burden of expectation, he shone for England at Euro 2004 – his first international tournament – and then signed for Manchester United in a transfer worth £25million at the age of 18.

Rooney went on to become United’s all-time record goalscorer with 253 goals in 559 games over 13 largely successful seasons in which he won five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, three League Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League.

He scored 53 goals in 120 games for England but was sadly not able to deliver the Three Lions long-awaited success at a tournament.

Rooney only joined Derby a year ago – joining on an 18-month contract as a player-coach from MLS side DC United.

However, his role changed in November when Phillip Cocu was sacked as Derby manager. As a result, Rooney became caretaker manager.

And after going unbeaten in seven of his nine matches during that spell, the Derby board have decided to appoint Rooney – signalling an end to his illustrious playing career.

Speaking on Friday shortly after confirmation of his permanent appointment, Rooney said: ‘My whole life has been playing football, so I’m fortunate that I’m still part of it. It’s a new chapter for me. Will I miss playing? Of course.

‘But, time doesn’t stop. I’ve had my time, it’s time for the younger generation to have their time and for me to guide them.

‘My future is in management. I’ve had a great career with a few ups and a few downs, but I wouldn’t change anything.

  • Liverpool deserve title – Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney believes Liverpool should be given the chance to finish the Premier League season and lift the trophy as champions.

The former Manchester United striker, who supports Everton, says not finishing the 2019-20 campaign after the coronavirus pandemic subsides would create too many problems, including “legal fights”.

Writing in the Sunday Times, the player-coach at Derby County also indicated it may take until the end of this year to do so, but that football must follow the governments advice on how to deal with the health crisis.

“Liverpool will win the Premier League,” he said. “Now, as you can imagine, I have Everton fans phoning me up saying: ‘The season has to be cancelled!’ And, of course, as an Evertonian and someone who played for Manchester United for 13 years, there’s a bit in me that thinks that would be good .

“But no. Liverpool have been fantastic. They have put so much work in. They deserve this title. Can you imagine waiting 30 years and then having it taken away like this? The right decision has been made.

“It’s also right in terms of promotion and relegation and Champions League places. These issues are so big for the clubs involved that I imagine there would be a lot of legal fights if the season was just abandoned.

“The fair thing is to finish 2019-20 – even if we have to lose next season in the process.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if finishing the season takes until the end of 2020. Football, like every other industry, is in unknown territory and, just like every other industry, has to listen to the advice and take all necessary precautions.

“For me, that rules out finishing the season behind closed doors.”

  • Rooney urges Man Utd fans to be patient

Wayne Rooney has urged Manchester United fans to be patient, saying it could take “two or three years” before they return to the top of the game.

Rooney, United’s record scorer with 253 goals, is set to face his old club in the FA Cup fifth round when the Red Devils travel to Derby on Thursday.

He spent 13 years at Old Trafford, during which he won every domestic honour along with the Champions League and the Europa League.

Rooney, 34, returned to boyhood club Everton in 2017 before embarking on a spell with Major League Soccer outfit DC United. He played his first game for Derby as a player-coach in January.

The former England captain feels United are moving in the right direction under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but need time before they challenge for major honours.

“It is going to take another two or three years, I believe,” Rooney told the British press. “The important thing is for them to try and get into the Champions League this year.

“It is really tight at the minute. I think that will help them a lot if they can do that — but it is going to take time.”

Rooney added: “The United fans need to be a bit patient with what’s going on and let these players try and prove themselves.

“They need to bring some players in, they need to also get rid of some players, and within two or three years they have to be challenging again.”

Derby, managed by former Dutch international midfielder Phillip Cocu, are 13th in the second-tier Championship and while Rooney knows the Rams are underdogs, he believes they can surprise his old club.

While enjoying his current role as Derby’s playmaker from a deeper midfield position, Rooney has his eye on a long-term future in the dugout.

“I think it’s a shame when you see great players walking away and not really having a go at management or coaching,” he said.

“I’m a player first and foremost and then a coach, to try and learn to help me in the long run.”
