Video: O’Reilly SHS student brandishes a cutlass online amid murder case probe

A video of a male student of O’Reilly Senior High School student brandishing a weapon on social media has surfaced.

A cutlass was hidden in the uniform of a student who threatened to take action against anyone who may try to oppose him. He was in the company of some colleagues who appeared to be calm about the situation.

This video gone viral comes at a time at a time when the Ghana Police Service is investigating a murder case involving a student of the school.

Users who have reacted to the video have questioned the role of the authorities in the school and the kind of training these students have at home.

“We are losing our culture,” “E check like authorities no Dey the school inside,” “What will happen if they close down the school? The level of indiscipline in that school is alarming,” some users wrote.

O’Reilly Senior High School final-year students, Edward Sackey and Godwin were engaged in a fisticuff, with the former losing his life after being stabbed repeatedly by the latter.

A video reportedly detailing the actions of Edward Sackey and Godwin, before the stabbing of the former by the latter has emerged online.

In a video gone viral, two male students were engaged in a fisticuff in the presence of several other students.

This is said to have ensued before Edward Sackey, an 18-year-old General Arts student was fatally stabbed during an altercation with a classmate from the Visual Arts Department on Monday, September 2.

According to reports, the altercation that led to Edward’s death was reportedly sparked by a dispute over personal wealth. Edward was stabbed three times in the chest and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

There are reports that the school authorities, particularly teachers failed to take action during the clash between the two students and after the stabbing occurred.

Meanwhile, the father of Edward Sackey, Enoch Sackey, has announced his intention to sue the school following his son’s tragic death.

In an interview with Accra-based CitiNews, Enoch Sackey expressed profound frustration and demanded accountability from the school for the circumstances leading to his son’s death.

“We have to sue the school, we have to hold the school responsible,” Sackey asserted. “We want the school authority to come out and explain why such a thing would happen on school premises, where the teachers, nobody tried to interfere… they were all unconcerned until my son passed away.”

Sackey further criticized the school’s teachers for negligence, noting that his niece had called him to the school due to the fight but he did not understand why the teachers did not handle the situation. “I went to the school in Accra to understand the happenings, but sadly, I found my son covered in blood,” he said.

On Tuesday, Sackey and other family members, dressed in red and black, picketed the school to voice their dissatisfaction. They have expressed disappointment that neither the school administration, the attacker’s family, nor the police have contacted them regarding the incident.

Sackey emphasized, “We want answers from the school authority, and the parents of the boy and the police. We want justice, and we want the school authority to explain to us if the teachers were not at the school when it happened, or they were there, or they did not care.”

The suspect, Godwin, has been apprehended by the Ghana Police Service.

We will retaliate with any weapon we find if citizens continue to attack our officers – GNFS

The Public Relations Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), A.D.O1 Alex King Nartey, has expressed concerns about attacks on personnel who arrive late at fire scenes.

According to him, residents manhandle officers in the line of duty and even vandalize fire tenders.

This follows a disturbing incident at the O.A. Travel and Tours terminal at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle (Avenor) where unidentified individuals, incensed by the alleged delay in the Fire Service’s response to a fire emergency, resorted to pelting the fire tenders with stones.

It took the intervention of the police service to restore calm and allow the firefighters to get to work. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program, Mr. Nartey said they will not tolerate such attacks from people anymore.

He emphasized that fire personnel will defend themselves with any weapon available should they come under attack.

“If residents continue to attack us in line of duty, whatever weapon we have, we can use it to defend ourselves at the peril of our lives. You cannot attack us during the course of our work; whatever weapon we have, we can use it to attack you” the Fire Service PRO fumed.

Mr. Nartey explained that they often arrive late at fire scenes due to illegal structures located in fire-prone areas in Accra. The presence of such structures hinders the quick and efficient movement of fire tenders.

“Sometimes, the unauthorized placement of metal containers and wooden kiosks for business purposes by private individuals in certain areas also becomes a hindrance for the vehicles to have easy access to the scenes of fire outbreaks,” he added.

Mr. Nartey said they are collaborating with the Police to address the menace of miscreants attacking personnel.

The GNFS on December 20 shared a report from AdomNews expressing the Service’s commitment to retaliate when attacked. But this post has been pulled down.

Teenager detained for sending AR-15 and weapons to school

A high school kid in Arizona was detained after smuggling an AR-15 and more ammunition into the building in a lunchbox.

After receiving a tip that a firearm had been discovered on the school premises, police in Phoenix arrived at the scene of the incident at the city’s Bostrom High School on Friday, May 19.

According to the Phoenix Police Department (PPD), police ‘moved immediately’ to detain the student just before 1 o’clock in the afternoon. They were only identified as a boy student at Bostrom who was 15 years old.

‘When they arrived, officers detained a male student in the school’s main office,’ PPD said. ‘The student was found to be in possession of a semi-automatic rifle. Additional ammunition was found in the student’s backpack and lunchbox.’

It is unclear if a staff member or student first noticed the weapon and ammunition.

PPD said the incident was still under investigation. A possible motive and exactly what charges the minor is facing have not yet been released.

Phoenix Unified School District thanked police for their quick response to the frightening situation.

‘The safety and wellbeing of our staff, students, and visitors remain our top priority, and we will work with law enforcement as they continue to investigate,’ the district stated.

The United States has seen a major spike in mass shootings in 2023, including those taking place on school campuses.

In March, a shooter armed with a rifle and a handgun broke into a private Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee and fired 152 rounds, killing three adults and three students.

The incident in Phoenix happened almost one year after a gunman entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas armed with an AR-15.

The shooter killed 19 students and two teachers at the elementary school, making it the third deadliest school shooting in US history.

A dispute about the man practicing shooting with a semi-automatic weapon nearby led to the death of five of the man’s neighbors according to the police in Texas.

The victims were all from Honduras, and included an eight-year-old child.

The shooting happened on Friday night in the small town of Cleveland, San Jacinto County, north of Houston.

Among those killed were two women who were found lying on top of two surviving children, according to local Sheriff Greg Capers.

“In my opinion, they were actually trying to take care of the babies and keep them alive,” Sheriff Capers told a local station KTRK. He added that all the victims had been shot “from the neck up, almost execution style, basically in the head”.

The suspect, believed to be Mexican, has been named as Francisco Oropez, 38. He is still on the run and thought to be armed. He has been charged with five counts of murder.

Police are using dogs and a drone in the hunt for the suspect, who is believed to be hiding in a nearby forest.

The sheriff’s office said it received a call about “harassment” at about 23:30 local time on Friday (04:30 GMT Saturday).

Investigators believe that the victims had asked Mr Oropez, who it is thought had been drinking, to stop shooting as they were trying to put a baby to sleep.

According to Sheriff Capers, the man replied: “I’ll shoot out in my front yard, do what I want to in my own residence.”

After both parties returned to their houses, the gunman “topped off his magazine, and walked down his driveway… into the people’s house and started shooting,” Sheriff Capers said.

A total of 10 people were at the property at the time. The adults were declared dead at the scene, and the eight-year-old died at a hospital.

The gunman is believed to have used an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.

Neighbour Veronica Pineda said she heard the shooting, but that the sound of gunfire was a regular occurrence: “It’s normal, in this neighbourhood they’re always shooting. They’re always calling the cops and there’s nothing done for that.

“So yesterday I heard the shooting but I thought it was, like, a normal day. I never thought this was happening.”

The incident came days after nine people were injured at a shooting during a teenagers’ party in western Texas.

Two weeks ago four young people were shot dead during a 16th birthday party in Alabama.

Firearm incidents are the top cause of death for US children and teenagers, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
