C/R: One killed, several others sustain injuries after violent clash in Winneba

A violent clash between two youth factions in Sankor, Winneba, in the Central Region has resulted in the death of an individual.

Several others have also sustained injuries following the incident which occurred on Sunday, January 25. A video making rounds on social media shows the culprits inflicting machete wounds on themselves.

The Winneba Divisional Police Commander, ACP Ibrahim Opoku made this known while engaging the media.

However, the Divisional Police Commander is yet to make known what instigated the clash. Violent clashes in Ghana are mostly fueled by tribalism and chieftancy disputes.

These actions have led to the loss of many lives and properties. The Upper East Region has since experienced consistent clashes until the intervention of the Asante hene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Bawku, which had remained relatively peaceful for a period, saw conflict erupt once more in late 2024. The resurgence of violence was largely sparked by the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a Mamprusi chief who had been enskinned in 2022, only to be exiled later when his enskinment was ruled illegal.

His return to Bawku followed the withdrawal of an arrest warrant against him by a Kumasi High Court in October 2024, reigniting tensions between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities. The renewed violence has resulted in deadly confrontations, including attacks on both civilians and security forces.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s involvement in the peace process was met with widespread approval.

The Mamprusi-installed rival chief, Alhaji Seidu Abagre, from Bawku following Otumfuo’s recommendation. The Asantehene Osei Tutu II initiated mediation talks last year to find lasting solutions to conflicts in the area.

According to a statement released by the Interior Ministry, Alhaji Seidu Abagre was removed on December 24.

“This afternoon, personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) removed Alhaji Seidu Abagre from Bawku, pursuant to the recommendations of the Otumfuo Asantehene Osei Tutu II mediation report regarding the Bawku affair,” the statement read.

The Ministry assured the public that “Alhaji Seidu Abagre was safe in the care of the security agencies.”

During the engagement with the groups, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, urged the factions involved in the Bawku chieftaincy dispute to cease power struggles and work towards lasting peace.

He made the call on Monday, December 1, at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall in Kumasi while speaking to representatives of the Mamprugu and Kusasi.

“Whatever the outcome of the mediation, you will still have to live together as brothers and sisters,” he added.

But, the overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, the Nayiri, Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, has described a chieftaincy mediation report presented by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as a “procedurally flawed” and “unilaterally imposed” document.

According to a statement dated Wednesday, December 17, and issued by the Mamprugu Traditional Council, the content of the document is contrary to the discussions held during the mediation.

The statement further contended that such actions by Otumfuo contradict the fundamental purpose of mediation. It added that, “I must state clearly and without reservation that the so-called report and recommendations do not reflect my engagements with Otumfuo, nor those of my duly constituted mediation team.”

“To say that I feel betrayed, disappointed, and deeply hurt would be a grave understatement,” he wrote, alleging that the report was “replete with factual inaccuracies” and displayed a “manifest imbalance” favouring one side’s narrative while omitting Mamprugu’s case.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has stepped in to ensure a lasting solution to the long-standing dispute between the Kusasis and the Mamprusis in Bawku.

As part of these efforts, the Minister of Finance has been directed by President John Dramani Mahama to create a one-billion Ghana cedi (GH¢1bn) fund for the restoration of peace, rebuilding damaged infrastructure, and reviving economic activities in Bawku.

The rebuilding of damaged infrastructure will target roads, health facilities, schools, dams, and irrigation systems to support all-year-round farming.

The fund will be distributed and used gradually over three years, starting in 2026 and ending in 2028. This disclosure was contained in a statement issued by the Presidency on Wednesday, December 17.

According to the government, the new development also aims to restore Bawku to its former status as a major economic and trading centre in northern Ghana.

Firefighters from the Winneba Fire Station arrived promptly and successfully brought the blaze under control within seven minutes, preventing widespread destruction.

While some vegetation and a wooden structure sustained minor burns, the swift response of the fire team helped safeguard other properties from serious harm.

Initial findings from fire officials indicate that the incident was triggered by the improper disposal of a cigarette butt, which set the dry vegetation ablaze.

The Ghana National Fire Service has since urged the public to be vigilant and dispose of flammable materials properly, especially during the dry season, to prevent such fires.

  • Agona West MP alleges Afenyo-Markin offers 1k to lure voters to Winneba

Agona West MP alleges Afenyo-Markin offers 1k to lure voters to Winneba

wThe Agona West Member of Parliament (MP), Cynthia Mamle Morrison, has raised concerns regarding an alleged vote-buying scheme affecting her constituency.

In an interview broadcast on Metro TV on Thursday, October 24, 2024, she revealed that voters from her area are transferring their support to the neighboring Effutu Constituency.

Morrison stated that she has received reports that constituents are opting to vote in Effutu due to offers of GH¢1,000 from the area’s MP, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, who also leads the NPP caucus in Parliament.

While expressing her frustrations, the beleaguered legislator emphasized the insufficient support her constituency receives from the government, despite its significant size.

“Agona West has 31 electoral areas, Swedru has 16 electoral areas, Agona East has 15 electoral areas, Gomoa Central has 15 electoral areas. Afenyo-Markin (Effutu) has 18 electoral areas but Agona West (Cynthia Morrison) has 31.

“So, if you combine Agona East and Gomoa Central, the electoral areas in Agona West exceed that of the two. But they gave us the same amount of money in Parliament. If they give Agona West GH¢10, they also give Afenyo-Markin GH¢10, Queenstar Pokuah Sawyerr GH¢10. This makes it very difficult for me, when it comes to issues of money, more than the three of them,” she said in the Fante dialect.

Cynthia Morrison added, “So, Agona West must be divided. But, I’m going to say this on air, a huge number of our population when it is time for voting say Afenyo-Markin would give them GH¢1000 so they transfer their votes to Winneba.”

She indicated that the incident has reduced the population of her constituency, which makes it difficult for them to be given a district.

She urged the constituents who have transferred their votes to come back when the register is open so the exact population of her constituency would be known to allow for it to be divided into Agona West and Agona Central.

The Metro TV report indicated that the Effutu legislator has debunked the allegation, saying that all the MPs in the said constituencies held a meeting to stop voter transfers.

ECOWAS didn’t fund Kasoa-Winneba Highway project – NEIP CEO

Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has criticized the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for allegedly spreading false information about the ongoing 8-lane Kasoa-Winneba Highway project.

In a strongly-worded Facebook post on Wednesday, August 28, Mr. Nkansah accused the NDC of misleading the public regarding the source of funds for the highway’s expansion.

According to Mr. Nkansah, the NDC’s claims that the project is being financed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are entirely baseless.

He emphasized that the construction of the 30-kilometer highway, which is currently about 45% complete, is fully funded by the Government of Ghana.

“The 8-lane 30km Kasoa-Winneba Highway project is about 45% complete,” Mr. Nkansah stated. “The project is FULLY funded by the Government of Ghana and not ECOWAS as being peddled by the NDC.”

Mr. Nkansah further accused the NDC of deliberately spreading misinformation about government initiatives, suggesting that these tactics are part of a broader strategy to deceive Ghanaians ahead of the 2024 elections.

He urged the public to seek accurate information and not be swayed by what he described as the opposition’s attempt to mislead the electorate.

Market women at Winneba didn’t abandon Prof Opoku-Agyemang – Campaign team

The Campaign Team for Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has rebutted allegations that she was deserted by market women in Winneba.

Reports had suggested that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang abandoned the Winneba market, but her team has labeled these claims as entirely false and unfounded.

In a statement released on Monday, the team remarked, “The publication is false, baseless, and a figment of the fertile imagination of its author.”

“For the records, Prof. Jane Opoku-Agyemang on Friday had a very successful campaign tour of Winneba in the Effutu constituency. She visited market women in their shops and stalls at the Winneba market, and interacted with shoppers and lorry drivers, amongst others, amidst cheers and encouragement from the public.

“She also drove through some principal streets of Winneba and was given a rousing welcome.”

The team also noted that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was warmly welcomed during her drive through the main streets of Winneba.

During a rally at the Winneba Lorry Station, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the benefits of NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama’s 24-hour Economy policy and the forthcoming Women’s Development Bank initiative, which aims to support approximately one million women in business.

The campaign team emphasized that the Member of Parliament for Effutu was not present at the Winneba market at the same time as Prof. Opoku-Agyemang.

“At no point was the Member of Parliament for Effutu present at the same place and time that Prof Opoku-Agyemang was at the Winneba market,” it added.

They have called on Ghanaians to disregard these unfounded claims.

The Campaign team has therefore urged Ghanaians to disregard such claims.

The driver was confused, how much more the mate – Winneba resident jabs Bawumia

A resident of Winneba, identified as Awo Sagoe, has shared reasons why she believes the NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is unfit to to become Ghana’s next president.

The current Vice Presiden stated in his major speech as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that “as Vice-President, I am like a driver’s mate. But if, by the Grace of God, you make me President, I will be in the driver’s seat with constitutionally mandated authority to pursue my vision and my priorities.”

However, Madam Awo Sagoe believes Ghanaians cannot place their trust in someone who views himself as the driver’s mate.

She argues that if the driver (Akufo-Addo) has been unable to manage the country effectively, there is little reason to expect the mate to perform any better.

“If the driver couldn’t drive properly, what would the mate do?” – Awo Sagoe told the media.

At certain point in time during the treatment process the patient became dis oriented and started to exhibit some amount of violence. However, after gaining some strength and consciousness, the patient was calm and wished to have been sent back to where she was picked up.

Moreover, after the patient was declared well by the Clinician, coupled with the fact that she was itching to leave the hospital, a consensus was reached by the two social welfare officers to send her back to Gomoa Ojobi as agreed by the two social workers.

At this juncture, the hospital Ambulance accompanied by the social welfare officer and a staff of the hospital were detailed to transport her accordingly to the preferred destination of her choice after clothing her nicely and made available to her a wheel chair.

Again, before the departure from the hospital to Ojobi, the Social Welfare Officer interacted with his counterpart at Ojobi to inform her that the patient was being brought back to Ojobi and she assured to take over.

Sincerely speaking, if one should objectively analyse the situation at hand, one would realize that the hospital had played its role as expected of it by taking care of the patient, empathize with her but unfortunately the inevitable occurred.

It would interest the public to know that Trauma and Specialist Hospital, Winneba is being operated by well-trained health professionals and will not for a moment misconduct themselves to dent the corporate image of the Ghana Health Service and its own image as a secondary referral facility.

Furthermore, mention should be made clearly that this had not been the first time this hospital had played “Good Samaritan “role by taking care of patients of such calibre and delivering them back safely to their community after getting well. Records are available to authenticate the veracity of this claim.

Management would like to appreciate the sentiments expressed by the public regarding this unfortunate incidence. This is a learning curve and a bitter lesson to learn, and promised not to repeat it again in the life history of the hospital.

GHS investigates death of Winneba Trauma Hospital patient dumped in the bush

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has initiated an investigation following alarming reports that a patient from the Winneba Trauma Hospital was allegedly abandoned in a bush near Gomoa Ojobi.

The patient, who had been receiving treatment for two months after a severe accident, was found dead shortly after the incident.

Reports indicate that the patient, who had sustained two broken legs and was allegedly suffering from mental illness due to the accident, was left in the bush after her family failed to care for her during her hospital stay.

Community members in Ojobi recounted that the woman was transported in the hospital’s ambulance and left in a wheelchair in the bush, claiming it was her hometown.

Eyewitnesses told UTV that they saw the ambulance drop her off on the outskirts of the town but did not intervene, believing her caretakers would soon arrive to take her home.

Days later, the patient was found unresponsive and subsequently passed away, according to unconfirmed reports.

The Ghana Health Service has expressed deep concern over these allegations and has launched a thorough investigation to uncover the facts surrounding the incident.

The Ghana Health Service said “upon receiving this disturbing news, it has initiated investigations into the matter to establish the authenticity or otherwise of the story in line with the existing practices in the public service to enable it to take appropriate actions”.

The GHS emphasized its commitment to ensuring the highest standards of care and accountability within healthcare facilities across the country.

Poor young man battles for his life after father and son beat and broke his legs

Michael Abeku Afenyi, aged 28, is currently fighting for his life after being beaten by a father and son in Low Cost, Winneba, located in the Central Region.

Eyewitnesses reported that Michael was quickly transported to the hospital by some good Samaritans who intervened in the attack.

The altercation began when Michael was accused of threatening the wife of the older man, who then, along with his son, attacked and severely injured him.

A witness told TIGpost, “They beat him like an animal. Michael is a good boy known to everyone in this area, and I don’t know what would warrant such a wicked attack on him.”

The incident has been reported to the Low Cost Police in Winneba. However, TIGpost’s inquiries with the police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) revealed that while they claim to be investigating the case, no arrests have been made.

Some locals allege that the police have been bribed, leading to their apparent inaction.

TIGpost will continue to monitor this situation and provide further updates.

  • Significant portions of Kasoa-Winneba road to open to traffic by December

Significant portions of Kasoa-Winneba road to open to traffic by December

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Francis Asenso-Boakye, has announced that significant portions of the Kasoa-Winneba double-lane road, currently under construction, will be opened to traffic in eight months.

This development comes as part of efforts to ease traffic congestion and reduce accidents on what is considered one of the most accident-prone roads in Ghana.

During a working tour to inspect road projects in the Central Region, Mr Asenso-Boakye expressed satisfaction with the progress of work being executed by the contractors, Nag Fairmount Company Limited and MM Delivery Company Limited.

The $85,328,761 project, funded by the Government, includes the construction of interchanges/flyovers at Sapato, Akoti, Budumburam, Awutu, and Winneba Junction. Additionally, extra service lanes will be provided at all entry points to the main dualised road to assist commercial drivers in picking up and dropping passengers.

The Minister emphasized that the completion of the project, scheduled for 36 months, will connect Accra to Winneba, Cape Coast, and the Western Region, easing vehicular traffic congestion and boosting tourism, education, and commerce in the region.

In a related development, Mr Asenso-Boakye inspected works on the 14 km Kasoa-Bawjiase road, which is expected to be completed in September 2024. The road, valued at GHȼ95,945,753.56, connects Kasoa to the Awutu Senya West District. The Minister commended the contractor, Big Dreams Investment, for the progress of work, which is at 62 percent completion and scheduled for full completion by the end of the year.

The Minister also expressed satisfaction with the progress of works on the Ojobi-Senya-Bereku road in the Awutu Senya West District, the Assin Manso-Eshiem-Ajumako road in Assin South, and the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam districts. He noted that the timely completion of these projects would improve the transportation network in the area.

‘’This reflects the Government’s commitment to improving the road networks to enhance transportation and reduce travelling time for commuters.’’

In December 2023, stakeholders in the roads and transportation sector in the region expressed dissatisfaction over approximately 100 road projects that had been abandoned by contractors. These projects included 30 under the Ghana Highway Authority, 40 under the Urban Roads Department, and several others under the Feeder Roads Department.

According to the stakeholders, some contractors had been absent from the project sites for over a year, attributing their abandonment to a lack of funds. This situation had led to delays in completing the projects and had significantly impacted the transportation network in the region.

“Children I am going to love until my last breath” – Funny Face ‘adopts’ children he hit in near fatal accident

Comedian and actor Funny Face, born Benson Nana Yaw Oduro Boateng, has made a heartfelt pledge to provide unwavering love and support to the children knocked down with his car.

Taking to his Instagram platform he wrote ” Miracle God of Wonders.. Children I am going to love until my last breath”.

Prior to this pledge, Funny Face encountered criticism following his announcement of intentions to care for a 1-year-old and a 5-year-old involved in the accident.

Some have raised concerns about Funny Face’s financial situation, suggesting that he may struggle to adopt the children due to his own need for assistance.

The incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, March 24, when Funny Face’s vehicle collided with five individuals, including a grandmother and two children, at Kakraba in Kasoa, Central Region.

At the time of the accident, one victim fell into a coma, while the others were swiftly transported to the Winneba Trauma Centre for urgent medical treatment.

  • Be careful when plying Mankessim-Winneba junction – Police to motorists

Be careful when plying Mankessim-Winneba junction – Police to motorists

The Regional Police Command has identified the Winneba-Mankessim stretch, spanning approximately 49.9 kilometers along the Accra-Cape Coast Highway, as the most perilous road in the Central Region.

The authorities attribute the alarming rate of accidents during the 48-minute drive on this section to the poor quality of the road and frequent violations of road safety regulations by drivers.

Despite ongoing efforts such as sustained road safety education, speed checks, and police snap checks at strategic points, the situation remains a significant concern.

“Our challenge is that anytime Christmas is approaching, people are hesitant and afraid to travel because of road accidents,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Charles Kofi Adu, the Central Regional Commander, said.

“Our problem in the Central Region has been the stretch between Apam-Mankessim that has become an accident-prone area.”

DCOP Adu conveyed this message during a speech presented on his behalf at the Central Regional Coordinating Council meeting, which aimed to review past events and devise strategies for expedited development.

The gathering included metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executives, presiding members, heads of decentralized departments and agencies, traditional and religious authorities, security agencies, and members of the media.

Despite highlighting the concerning state of the Winneba-Mankessim stretch on the Accra-Cape Coast Highway, DCOP Adu assured attendees that the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) in Cape Coast and Mankessim had heightened patrols to address the situation.

Furthermore, the Command has launched a road safety management strategy named “Traffic Check Ghana” with the goal of enhancing road safety education for commuters.

“Police officers will be on duty, particularly along the stretch before, during and after the Christmas festivities to maintain law and order,” he said.

DCOP Adu emphasized that the police would concentrate their efforts on deploying personnel to commercial centers and various public spaces. Additionally, they would be vigilant in monitoring state assets to ensure security and public order.

That was to ensure the safety and security of humans, communities, institutions, marketplaces, commercial centres, beaches, streets, churches, recreational centres, and hospitals, among other areas.

“There will be police physical presence at all the places to deter criminals. We are using foot and mobile patrols day and night,” he said. “The police have made public safety a top priority and will go all out to ensure that people feel safe as they go about their legitimate businesses during the festive season.”

DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, the Central North Regional Commander, characterized the Assin Fosu area as “relatively peaceful” and advised everyone to observe caution while celebrating the festivities.

He highlighted the effectiveness of police interventions, emphasizing that their success depended on the collaboration between law enforcement and the public.

DCOP Teye-Cudjoe stressed that effective crime prevention and detection relied on a shared responsibility between the police and the community they served, underscoring the importance of public support in maintaining the area’s peace.

“While the police, with the support of the other security agencies, strive to guarantee the safety and security of everyone, it is important to note that personal security is the responsibility of every individual,” DCOP Teye-Cudjoe said.

“Individuals are to be alert and conscious of happenings in their environment and neighbourhood. Neighbours must be one another’s keepers and report every suspicious criminal activity to the police for prompt action.”

DCOP Owusu Bempah, the Deputy Commander of the Central East Command, debunked the security myth associated with Kasoa as a crime-prone area. He highlighted that strategic security interventions had successfully demystified this perception.

While acknowledging that the area had faced challenges related to chieftaincy and land guard issues over the years, DCOP Owusu Bempah assured the public that the situation was now under control.

He urged residents to live in peace and reassured them that the police would continue their routine duties to enhance security in the area.

In a tragic incident reported by onuafmonline.com, a 34-year-old Nigerian national known as Ikechuku, popularly called ‘Nose Mask,’ met a grim fate as he was purportedly lynched by an enraged mob in Gomoa Akotsi, located in the Central region.

The unfortunate episode unfolded after ‘Nose Mask’ allegedly stabbed two women, causing them injuries. According to an eyewitness, the initial stabbing occurred within the shared residence of Ikechuku, targeting a young lady. As residents confronted him about the incident, the situation escalated, leading to a second stabbing and injuring another woman.

Suspicion had surrounded Ikechuku during his 11-month stay in the community, with residents speculating that he might have been involved in spiritual practices that could have triggered his violent behavior, prompting the lynching.

The injured victims were swiftly transported to the Winneba Trauma and Specialized Hospital for urgent medical attention. Meanwhile, the lifeless body of Ikechuku was conveyed to the police mortuary by the Gomoa Ojobi police for preservation.

  • 2023 ECOWAS Parliament to be hosted in Winneba Ghana

2023 ECOWAS Parliament to be hosted in Winneba Ghana

As part of the sub-regional integration process of bringing governance to the doorsteps of the people, Winneba, will in September 2023 host the Extra Ordinary Session of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, in Ghana.

This would be the second time Ghana would host the ECOWAS Parliament which convenes twice a year.

The 2023 First Ordinary Session of Parliament, opened on Monday, May 8, 2023, in Abuja and ended on Friday, May 26, 2023.

The session was convened under Article 21.1 of the Supplementary Act relating to the enhancement of the powers of the ECOWAS Parliament, which provided that Parliament should meet twice a year in Ordinary Sessions to provide a platform to deliberate and strengthen Member States’ position on issues of regional and continental importance.

As provided for in Article 32 of the supplementary Act, the Session also provides the President of the ECOWAS Commission to present a general report on the implementation of the Community Work Programme to the Plenary.

This allows the House to be updated on developments in the Community and followed by debates, expressed opinions and recommendations.

Further, National Delegates also have the chance to present their country’s reports to inform the Body of unfolding developments in their respective Member States and the status of implementation of their community’s texts.

Mr Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the leader of the Ghanaian delegation announced in Monrovia – Liberia at the end of a joint delocalized meeting, when he interacted with the media.

He explained that the Conference being hosted out of the capital would bring governance to the doorsteps of the people and create an opportunity for the region by way of putting it on the visibility map for development.

“This will also allow Member States not only to connect to build consensus towards ECOWAS Development but also an opportunity to travel outside the capital city to familiarise themselves with neighbour countries,” he said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin, also the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament and a Member of the ECOWAS Parliament, further told Journalists that international programmes created opportunities for growth, development and tourism; and Winneba being the capital of one of the Municipalities in the Central Region was more than ready to welcome the ECOWAS delegation.

According to him, the Session would also market the region, the Effutu Constituency and the city which was a coastal city for greater opportunities.

He maintained that such Sessions projected facilities towards development and urged his colleagues to push for more opportunities and take advantage of such possibilities.

“We cannot always over-concentrate in the capital cities; we need to move out and spread opportunity to the people,” he said.

The Effutu NPP Member of Parliament (MP), told Journalists from Member that this will not be the first of its kind, particularly when Winneba 2021 successfully hosted a delocalised meeting and an Extra Ordinary Session, and therefore a precedent had been set.

… “We are optimistic that this will be better than before. The Ghanaian government will put in place the necessary protocols for all MPs, focal persons and staff, security arrangements will be in place. Winneba, which is the capital of my constituency, is just an hour’s drive from Accra on a good road,” he said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin noted that Members were already used to that route with facilities going to be there to host them, adding “As I did indicate, we hope to make it a pleasurable time, profitable time for all; we encourage all of you to come and take part in the programme,” he said.

Eric Sekyi Nketia drops out of NPP flagbearer race

A candidate in the New Patriotic Party‘s (NPP) presidential primary race, Eric Sekyi Nketia, has dropped out of the contest due to what he claims to be unjust treatment meted out to him.

The senior lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, in April this year declared his intentions to contest the NPP Presidential Primaries and lead the party into the 2024 election.

Eric Sekyi Nketia says on three different occasions he was not allowed to pick forms at the party headquarters though the party had opened nominations.

He says a petition to the General Secretary and the Chairman of the National Council on the treatment meted out to him has proven futile.

He is therefore withdrawing from the race to allow others to contest.

  • Management chastises UEW concerned staff over opposing VC

Management chastises UEW concerned staff over opposing VC

The University of Education (UEW), Winneba has strongly criticized the statement made by the Concerned Staff group, deeming it distasteful and unacceptable.

The group’s demand for the removal of Governing Council Chairman, Nana Ofori Ansah I, is described as unsavory and reprehensible by the university.

The Convener for the Concerned Staff of UEW, Professor George Kankam Senior, accused the Governing Council Chairman of blatantly going against the tenets of the university.

Professor Kankam claimed that Nana Ofori Ansah I has been dabbling in double standards by attempting to nominate someone who was not shortlisted for the position of vice-chancellor.

But the UEW in a statement described the claims by the group “as a diversionary tactic to coerce the Chairman to submit to their whims and caprices, however inimical it may be to achieving the mission and vision of the university.”

“Contrary to the impression that there is heightened tension at UEW and that the community is tipping towards a state of chaos, we wish to state unequivocally that there is absolute peace on campus with students, faculty, and other stakeholders going about their normal business.

“In fact, workers feel a renewed sense of energy and purpose in pursuing the mission and vision of the university. It is trite knowledge that this resurgent working environment at UEW has to a great extent come from the Council’s wisdom, under the leadership of Nana Ofori Ansah I, to constitute a reconciliation committee to hear aggrieved persons and the subsequent implementation of the committee’s recommendations.”

Below is the full statement by UEW

RE: STATEMENT BY CONCERNED STAFF OF THE UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION, WINNEBA (UEW)

A statement by certain concerned staff of UEW signed by Prof. George Kankam, which he later followed up with an interview on Eyewitness News of Citi FM on Thursday, 1st June, 2023, in connection with the above-mentioned subject, has come to our attention.

The contents of the release are unsavoury, unfortunate, reprehensible, and targeted at running down the reputation and the relentless effort of the Council Chairman in his leadership to bring lasting peace to UEW.

Since his assumption of office in August 2021, the Chairman, apart from the numerous responsibilities of his office, which he has efficiently delivered, has been pivotal in unifying the various factions of UEW to advance the mission and vision of the university.

We view the statement as a diversionary tactic to coerce the Chairman to submit to their whims and caprices, however inimical it may be to achieving the mission and vision of the university. Be that as it may, we wish to respond as follows:

    1. Contrary to the impression that there is heightened tension at UEW and that the community is tipping towards a state of chaos, we wish to state unequivocally that there is absolute peace on campus with students, faculty, and other stakeholders going about their normal business.

In fact, workers feel a renewed sense of energy and purpose in pursuing the mission and vision of the university. It is trite knowledge that this resurgent working environment at UEW has to a great extent come from the Council’s wisdom, under the leadership of Nana Ofori Ansah I, to constitute a reconciliation committee to hear aggrieved persons and the subsequent implementation of the committee’s recommendations. This fact can be verified by any media outlet interested in reporting the truth.

    2. It is important to stress that the said 2021 Search Committee’s report was never received or tabled before Council at any point. The Chairman of the Council, therefore, has no idea where the said report is, let alone its contents.

Given the situation, how could the Council Chair accept or assume liability for the implementation of a report that he hasn’t seen or has any idea of its whereabouts? Critically, the said report was meant to look for a qualified candidate for appointment as Vice-Chancellor to assume office from 1st October 2021 (i.e. replacement for Prof. Afful-Broni), but as rightly pointed out by Prof. Kankam, an injunction was placed on the university, thus curtailing the then existing opportunity to consider the said report. With the reinstatement of Prof. Avoke, the report in question became moot, necessitating a new process to find the successor to Prof. Avoke, effective October 1, 2023.

    3. On the allegations relative to the appointment of a new Chancellor, it is worthy of note that Council established a Search Committee in accordance with the UEW 2020 Statutes to find the new Chancellor. It was up to the Committee to do its work. We must stress that neither the Chairman nor the Council ever interfered with the Committee’s work.

The Search Committee alone made the decision to extend the deadline. It is also important to note that, contrary to the claim that the ultimate person appointed as Chancellor was not shortlisted, the Search Committee’s report presented to the Governing Council indicates that the now-appointed Chancellor was duly shortlisted.

    4. It is a complete fabrication to claim that the Council Chairman introduced Prof. Mitchual as the incoming Vice-Chancellor to the President of the Republic of Ghana. To be clear, no one has been introduced by the Chairman anywhere as the next Vice-Chancellor.

    5. The assertion that, barely seven months into his tenure, the local branches of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) issued a joint press statement calling on the appointing authorities to withdraw Nana Ofori Ansah I’s appointment as the Chairman of the Governing Council falls flat in the face.

The key is that the said statement was discredited as unilateral, and as a result, the authors of the said statement have since retracted and apologised unreservedly to Nana Ofori Ansah I. One is therefore at a loss as to why that statement can be used as the basis to lay claim to anything.

    6. The allegation that the Council Chairman disregarded statutes and established procedures, for instance, in the appointment of the Chancellor for the university, is a red herring relative to UEW 2020 Statute Four (4), which provides for the appointment of a Chancellor.

The provisions of UEW 2020 Statute Four were accorded full legal effect. It would, therefore, have been better for appreciation if the specific provision(s) breached were stated. In the absence of the aforementioned, it is our considered view that the frivolous claim should be disregarded with the contempt it deserves.

    7. Over the years, the university has always assigned a vehicle to the Council Chairman’s office for official engagements. The vehicle is kept in Winneba and released as and when necessary.

    8. It is impossible and inappropriate to compare the circumstances surrounding the appointment of a vice-chancellor at UEW to those at the University of Ghana. The University of Ghana did not wake up one day to find a rightfully appointed officer thrown out of office because of the selfish and wicked agenda of some individuals.

So situations or challenges that may appear similar may have different underlying causes and therefore require different approaches to resolving them. It was very ingenious on the part of a professor of his calibre to comfortably make such a blind comparison.

    9. Ironically, Prof. Kankam is on a post-retirement contract and acted as the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies for at least three years under Prof. Afful-Broni, contrary to statutory provision. Isn’t it also interesting that he claims to represent convocation on the search party when the statutes make no provision for convocation representation but rather academic board representation? In any case, why go to town with the details of a search party report when the Council is not apprised of its details?

    10. It must be indicated that Prof. Kankam is known to spew lies. About two weeks ago, he wrote to the Chairman alleging the award of two contracts at the university at the cost of GHS100 million each to “pre-determined National Democratic Congress (NDC) contractors and asking the Chairman to give the said contracts to New Patriotic Party (NPP) contractors” when, in actual fact, it was an open advertisement in the national dailies for pre-qualification (expression of interests).

He has for some time made unsuccessful overtures to win favours from the chairman, hence his hatred for the Chairman and the subsequent spewing of lies. His actions come from none other than a frustrated and mischievous retiree (pensioner) who is desperately seeking an extension of his post-retirement contract and does not see his way clear.

On the basis of the aforementioned information, we implore the general public to treat his press statement and subsequent interview with the disdain they merit.

    Thank you.

Gomoa Okyereko accident: ‘Tired’ Yutong driver cause of crash – NRSA

The National Road Safety Authority(NRSA) has revealed that tiredness on the part of the Yutong driver caused the gory accident that claimed about 16 lives at Gomoa Okyereko in the Central Region.

The accident involved a fully packed Yutong bus heading towards Accra and a fuel tanker believed to be owned by Goodness Energy.

According to information gathered by Starr News, the driver of the Yutong bus was sleeping along the journey and upon reaching Gomoa Okyereko he veered from his lane into the opposite lane resulting in the collision with the Fuel tanker.

The body of all Sixteen deceased persons have been deposited at the Winneba Specialist and Trauma Hospital Mortuary while the injured are receiving treatment at the same facility.

Commenting on the crash in an interview with Starr News, the Central Regional Head of the National Road Safety Authority, Winneba urged government to dualize the major roads in the country to address road carnage.

“One thing we are advocating for is the dualization of the road. We tend to have lots of head-on -collisions, so that will be an engineering issue there(Gomoa Okyereko). For head-on-collisions we need to dualize the roads so that we’ll be able to minimize collisions at where we’re having the head-on-collisions.”

The National Road Safety Authority and the Ghana Police Service have identified Gomoa Okyereko as one of the most accident prone areas on the Accra to Cape Coast Highway and have advised drivers to be extra careful on that stretch of the road.

  • Level 400 students’ portal, academic records updated – UEW Management

Management of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has said that all challenges students faced in accessing their portals and grades have been resolved.

A press release dated October 10, 2022 said Level 400 students who were affected the most, by the issue, can now have full access to the proper records of their academic work.

The school’s Management admitted that the challenges it had in updating the portal dates back to 2018 but “the current Management took the audacious initiative to resolve the challenges with the results of over 8,000 students as far back as June, 2022.”

“Having come this far to successfully update students’ portals based on bulk data collated from the activities of the Students’ Help Desk, we expect our level 400 students to access their portals to check the updated results and resort to laid down processes to address their concerns if any are identified,” part of the press release said.

On Monday, October 10, some level 400 students of UEW demonstrated against the school’s Management over what they described as not a true reflection of their academic work.

The students, clad in red and black, said the Management has not shown any urgency in resolving their complaints.

They insisted that it is a deliberate attempt by school authorities not to release their results on the students’ portal.

“We wish to state that we are on the same page with our Level 400 students in the quest for accurate and clean results to enable them to graduate. Consequently, we are prepared to stay with them side-by-side on this cause to ensure that every single issue with their results is resolved.

“We expect, on the other hand, that our level 400 students will resort to dialogue for all genuine concerns to be addressed if any are identified in the process to meet our collective goal,” the press release added.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) says it will be deploying auditors to the University this week to audit the grading system.

  • UEW level 400 GPA saga: Records of 8000 students updated

The Management of the University of Education, Winneba has indicated that it has resolved the challenges it had updating the academic records of some of its students.

In a press release dated October 10, 2022, the university indicated that the level 400 students, who were mainly affected by the issue, can now access their portals to get the proper record of their academic work.

It explained that 8000 students were affected by the challenge which began in 2018 but it has now been resolved due to the instrumentality of the current university administration.

“The Management of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), wishes to inform level 400 students of the university and the general public that student portals have been successfully updated, and level 400 students have full access to their portals.

“The challenge at hand is a four-year-old issue that dates back to 2018. The current Management took the audacious initiative to resolve the challenges with the results of over 8,000 students as far back as June 2022.

“Having come this far to successfully update students’ portals based on bulk data collated from the activities of the Students’ Help Desk, we expect our level 400 students to access their portals to check the updated results and resort to the laid down processes to address their concerns if any are identified,” parts of the statement read.

On Monday, October 11, some final year students at the University of Education, Winneba protested what they say are disparities between results on the school’s online system and notice boards.

Sources at the school indicated that students are unhappy about the inability of the school’s management to determine their various classes, although they have completed most courses and received their marks and transcripts for same.

This comes following earlier protests in September when students had to be dispersed by police after they protested discrepancies in their results posted online and on the university’s notice boards.

The students, who were disappointed about the cancellation of a scheduled meeting between level 400s and management to resolve the issues, broke some sign posts and tree branches and blocked some roads on campus.

Ahead of what they say are their final papers, some final-year students recently protested again, citing the inability to determine their final marks as the reason.

The students said the school system for checking grades, which was the notice board, had been upgraded such that students now have to log into a portal to access their grades, but the grades they have received, which were previously posted on the notice boards, differ from those on the school’s portal.

  • Pay compensation to affected customers – PURC to ECG

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has ordered the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to pay compensation to its customers affected by its prepayment system across the country from September to early October, this year.

This follows the failure in ECG Prepayment vending System at Volta, Takoradi, Tema, Cape Coast, Kasoa, Winneba, Swedru, Koforidua, Nkawkaw andTafo among other locations.

To demonstrate good customer service, the commission has asked ECG to pay lifeline customers GH¢15, residential customers with 10 penalty units equivalent GH¢120; non-residential customers with 20penalty units equivalent GH¢240; commercial customers with 40penalty units equivalent GH¢480 and industrial customers with 100 penalty units equivalent GH¢1,200.

Dr Ishmael Ackah in a statement issued and signed and copied to Ghanaian Times in Accra on Tuesday said the ECG would pay the compensation in the form of a one-time electricity credit from last Saturday to Friday October 7, 2022 with the compensation clearly indicated on customer receipts.

“ECG shall issue widespread notifications to inform customers of the compensation due to them and shall maintain accurate records of measures taken to comply with this order including the number of temporary staff engaged (if any), for purposes of regulatory monitoring,” he stated.

“This order is without prejudice to any additional directives the Commission may issue with respect to the incident,” he added.

Dr Ackah noted that the order was issued under sections 11 and 12 (1) and (2) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission Act, 1997 (Act 538); and regulations 41 and 45 of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Consumer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L12413).

He said that the law imposed a duty on public utilities to provide safe, adequate, efficient, reasonable and non-discriminatory service.

“The law also mandates the Commission to impose compensation orders among other penalties on public utilities for failure to comply with their legal obligations,” he said.

Dr Ackah said it was for that reason the commission in consideration of the inconvenience occasioned by the failures with the ECG prepayment meter system determined that ECG would pay compensation to all its affected customers.

The Executive Secretary of the PURC said that the ECG would additionally adopt immediate measures to increase staff output and responsiveness to customers.

Dr Ackah said ECG would extend the working hours at all affected locations to 8pm,

engage temporary staff to ensure that affected customers were speedily attended to and were credited with the approved compensation by October 7, 2022.

“Final resolution of the vending failure as soon as possible with minimum further inconvenience to consumers,” he added.

  • ‘Pure rubbish and nonsense!’ – DKB fumes after ECG blunder

Filming and voicing out his frustration in the dark, a livid Derrick Kobina Bonney (DKB) was concerned about the technical challenge that has affected prepaid metering systems making it impossible for customers to top up.

The situation has led to some customers sleeping in darkness as the purchase of electricity credit for prepaid metres has sadly been interrupted.

“Prepaid network down, can’t buy lights, darkness everywhere! But I have to wait on NDC before I’ll know if I’m in darkness! Pure rubbish and nonsense!” the comedian fumed in a tweet, Thursday.

In the video clip that had the aforementioned caption, DKB could not fathom why genuine concerns are diluted for political expediency. He noted that whenever concerns are raised, there is a swift attempt by a section of the public to politicize the matter, a posture he condemned without equivocation.

“In this country, if there is a socio-economic problem bothering you and you complain about it, they’ll tell you you’re manipulated by the opposition,” he said.

“Since morning that we’ve not had prepaid to buy and our lights are off, me as a human being, as a Ghanaian, I can’t see that I don’t have light so I need to wait for NDC to tell me that I don’t have light so that I’ll complain about it and it will unpopularize NDC.”

Meanwhile, the Electricity Company of Ghana has in a statement assured the general public of its resolve to surmount the challenge.

“Affected customers should please note that our ICT team is working assiduously to correct the anomaly and restore the system to normalcy. We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this technical challenge,” parts of the statement read.

Some customers in Volta, Kumasi, Accra, Takoradi, Tema, Cape Coast, Kasoa, Winneba, Swedru, Koforidua, Nkawkaw, and Tafo have been affected by the hiccup.
