Karen Carney’s evaluation of women’s football in the UK gains government support

On Monday, the UK government announced its support for the recommendations outlined in the review of domestic women’s football by former England international Karen Carney.

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer referred to it as a “defining moment” for women’s football.

Carney’s July review presented 10 recommendations, including the transformation of the Women’s Super League and Championship into fully professional environments and the establishment of a dedicated broadcast slot for women’s soccer.

The government’s endorsement signals a commitment to advancing the professionalisation and visibility of women’s football in the country.

“Our attention will be on making them a reality and holding the football industry to account for their success,” the government said of the recommendations.

The government will also set up an implementation group for the review’s recommendations, consisting of the FA, incoming women’s football governing body NewCo and other stakeholders.

Frazer said she was confident the measures could propel the women’s game even further and set the “standard for women’s sport as a whole.”

“We are completely committed to delivering equal access to sport for girls in schools, alongside an unprecedented £400 million ($507 million) investment in grassroots facilities,” she said in a statement.

The UK government announced a £30 million investment in collaboration with the FA to construct approximately 30 new 3G pitches and facilities, with a primary focus on women’s and girls’ teams.

Karen Carney, a former Arsenal and Chelsea player, characterised the government’s additional investment and support as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform domestic women’s football for generations to come.”

This initiative reflects a commitment to enhancing the infrastructure and resources available for women’s football, aiming to create lasting positive impacts on the sport at the grassroots level.

“The real work begins now,” she added.

  • Women’s Super League: Arsenal to host five games at Emirates next season

Women’s Super League: Arsenal to host five games at Emirates next season

Next season, Arsenal Women’s team plans to host five Women’s Super League games at the Emirates Stadium.

Additionally, if they qualify for the group stage, they have committed to holding all their Champions League fixtures at the same venue.

This season, Jonas Eidevall’s team has already played three WSL games at the stadium, including the record-breaking match against Tottenham where they set a new league attendance record.

Furthermore, they sold over 86,000 tickets across games against Manchester United and Chelsea.

The team also played five of their Women’s Champions League games at the Emirates, which included a sold-out semi-final second-leg against Wolfsburg. However, the German side managed to win in extra time.

Arsenal are in a tussle to qualify for next season’s Champions League but, if they do progress, every fixture from the group stage onwards will be hosted in N5 rather than at Meadow Park.

The successes of this season have built on a groundswell of support for women’s football following on from England’s Women’s Euro victory last summer.

Now, Arsenal are keen to continue the trend of hosting more games at the Emirates, with Eidevall saying recently he believes it would be possible to host all women’s fixtures there at some point in the future.

“We’re delighted to confirm that our women’s first team will play five WSL games at Emirates Stadium next season,” Arsenal chief executive Vinai Venkatesham said when the announcement was made on Wednesday morning.

“We’ve received fantastic support at Emirates Stadium this year, setting a new record attendance in the WSL and achieving a memorable sell-out for our recent UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final against Wolfsburg earlier this month.

“This latest announcement ensures that as many supporters as possible can enjoy the matchday experience with us, as we continue to support the sustainable growth of women’s football.”

  • Jess Carter: Chelsea defender to remain at club until 2025

Chelsea defender Jess Carter has signed a contract extension that will keep her at the club until 2025.

Since joining Chelsea in 2018, the 24-year-old has won the Women’s Super League three times.

Carter has also helped Emma Hayes’ side to win the FA Cup, Continental Cup, and Community Shield.

“I’m looking forward to continuing my development with the team, helping them to become even more successful,” the England international said.

The player is closing in on 100 appearances for Chelsea and was a part of the Lionesses squad which won the European Championship this summer.

General manager Paul Green added: “She had an outstanding 2021-22 season for both club and country and we want to reward her for those achievements.

“We’re really happy with the way she’s been developing over the last couple of seasons and look forward to seeing that continue in the upcoming years.”
