City’s goalkeeper Ederson hints on Ancelotti becoming Brazilโ€™s coach

The goalkeeper for Manchester City, Ederson, recently expressed his opinions on the possibility of Carlo Ancelotti taking over as Brazil’s new head coach after leaving his position as manager of Real Madrid.

Months after Tite made the decision to resign following a lacklustre 2022 World Cup campaign, Brazil has yet to name a new head coach.

Ederson claimed he and his Brazilian teammates have been talking about the possibility, despite the fact that Ancelotti and Real Madrid have both recently refuted rumours that they would take over as Brazil’s new coach.

It's a big possibility - Ederson speaks on Ancelotti becoming Brazil's coach

    He said at a press conference;

โ€œI was discussing this with Casemiro, Vinicius Junior, [Eder] Militรฃo. There is a big possibility that he comes.

โ€œJust look at his CV. We will know shortly whether he will be here or not. I hope we can have a new coach quickly. I feel the anticipation too because thereโ€™s too much speculation. Is it a Brazilian or a foreign coach? We are also living that phase of anxiety.โ€

  • The Indian waiter with an โ€˜encyclopaedicโ€™ knowledge of football

In a bustling Doha restaurant, Abbas Koori shares his love of the sport and command of football trivia with customers.

On any given night at the Century Restaurant, an Indian eatery in Doha, customers may find themselves drawn into a discussion about football with a waiter named Abbas Koori.

The buzzing eatery where the 46-year-old Indian waiter works is a place for people on the move. The no-frills establishment serves Keralan cuisine, along with a few Chinese and Middle Eastern dishes. It caters to a diverse group of foreigners in the bustling neighbourhood of Najma, which is filled with furniture, hardware, scrap, and meat businesses.

Koori is a familiar face at the restaurant and is known by regulars to be a football aficionado.

These days, with the World Cup in full swing in Qatar, Koori has more opportunities than usual to discuss his favourite topic.

โ€œI speak to every African and European I meet at the restaurant. I ask them where they come from,โ€ said Koori, who has met fans from Ghana, England, Nigeria, Morocco and other countries.

โ€œThen I ask about a player in their national team. Most people start to speak.โ€

One recent evening, a group of Moroccans came to the restaurant, and while serving them Koori started listing the names of past and present players from their national team. โ€œHakim Ziyech, Achraf Hakimi, Marouane Chamakh, Noussair Mazraoui, Mustapha Hadji โ€ฆ They were delighted when they heard those names and called me akhi [brother],โ€ he recounted.

Other times, the friendly yet straight-faced Koori strikes up a conversation by asking, โ€œHave you watched yesterdayโ€™s game?โ€

In mid-November, some Chelsea fans who were in Qatar for the World Cup asked to take a selfie with Koori after he introduced himself as a Premier League fan.

โ€œNo one ignored or avoided me for talking football,โ€ he said.

    Memorising playersโ€™ names

The moustachioed waiter dons a hairnet and the restaurantโ€™s brown polo shirt with red trim during his 12-hour shift from noon to midnight.

He prefers serving groups as he has more occasions to return to their table and extend the conversation, which he peppers with historical anecdotes, analysis of team formation, occasional updates about playersโ€™ fitness and football folklore including rags-to-riches stories. While doing this, he occasionally glances at the cash register to see whether the manager is watching him and if he needs to hurry back to work.

At night after his shift, he watches matches or replays and memorises the names of players. โ€œIf I donโ€™t get enough time, I rifle through the highlights on YouTube,โ€ said Koori.

NS Nissar, an Indian sportswriter covering the World Cup 2022 for Madhyamam, a Malayalam language newspaper from the Indian state of Kerala, first encountered Koori just before the World Cup started when he went to the restaurant for tea. He suggested that Koori may know the names of thousands of players from the past three decades.

โ€œI instantly noticed his memory. We all know Claudio Caniggia played for Argentina in the 1990s, but Koori tracked the playersโ€™ entire trajectory through clubs. He can recall every player of [all] World Cup teams since the 1990s,โ€ recounted Nissar, who described Kooriโ€™s memory as โ€œencyclopaedicโ€.

โ€œI have seen people knowledgeable about Brazil, Argentina or Italy, but this man knows a lot about Morocco, Cameroon or Senegal,โ€ he said.

Sometimes, Koori will spontaneously mention the nicknames of players who were likened to the Brazilian legend Pele: โ€œPele of the desert โ€“ Saudi Arabiaโ€™s Majed Abdullah; White Pele โ€“ Zico of Brazil.โ€ At other times he shares trivia like how โ€œBallon dโ€™Or winner George Weah went on to become Liberiaโ€™s president.โ€

He might tell you how AC Milan, who dominated the Italian league, fell from grace as they focused โ€œtoo much on defenceโ€ or lament that the days of โ€œindividuals single-handedly carrying a team to winโ€ have passed.

Koori never leaves a patron who he thinks follows the game, says Jaseem Mohamed, a sales engineer who occasionally drops by the restaurant for a quick bite during the week. โ€œHe always hovers around the table, looking to open a chat,โ€ he said. โ€œI encourage it when I have time.โ€

    โ€˜The reason I love footballโ€™

Koori was born in 1976 โ€“ the youngest of six children โ€“ to a gunny bag merchant and a homemaker in Keralaโ€™s Malappuram, a football-mad town in a country where cricket is often the more popular sport.

Koori didnโ€™t play the game much in his childhood, but a 1990 World Cup matchย that he watchedย with about 30 others from his village sparkedย his lifelong loveย of the sport. Sitting in his neighbourโ€™s courtyard as a 14-year-old in front of a โ€œblack and white Keltron brand TVโ€, he witnessed a historic match where Cameroon defeated Argentina.

โ€œArgentina was a good team, but the powerful Cameroonians tackled every Argentine player, including Diego Maradona, Caniggia, and Jorge Burruchaga,โ€ he explained.

Although Argentina lost that game, Maradona enthralled a teenage Koori. โ€œHe was the reason I love football. Maradonaโ€™s passing, dribbling, and arrival to the pitch carrying a ball on his head โ€ฆ he had that flare for the dramatic,โ€ he added.

After finishing high school, Koori worked in an auto garage and then in sand mining. Throughout, he read about football in the sports pages of newspapers. Koori, whose first language is Malayalam, taught himself to read English using Sportstar, an English-language Indian sports magazine.

โ€œIt was easy because I was familiar with the sports terms or had watched the game,โ€ he said, adding that he doesnโ€™t read about any other subjects in English.

Meanwhile, following the Premier Leagueย made him a Manchester United fan, while he also became an admirer of the Brazilian national team and some African players, especially ones from Cameroon and Nigeria.

โ€œI love African footballers because of their dexterity,โ€ Koori said, using the Malayalam word meyvazhakkam, which means flexibility, โ€œand their dancing skills on the pitch in celebration.โ€

After he married, Koori moved to Saudi Arabia in search of better job prospects like thousands of others from his home district who have migrated to Gulf countries for work. He lived there from 2005 to 2008, working in a supermarket and a shawarma outlet in Khamis Mushait, a city some 900km (560 miles) from the capital Riyadh.

Then, after returning home, he worked again in sand mining before coming to Qatar in 2017.

    The Qatar World Cup

Koori says the men in his family including his three brothers are also football fans. โ€œMy mother doesnโ€™t watch. But my wife does,โ€ heย said.

Years of watching major European leagues have given him the knowledge to analyse the national teams playing in this World Cup.

โ€œWatching รlisson Becker play for Liverpool, Ederson for Manchester City, Antony and Casemiro for Manchester United, Richarlison for Tottenham Hotspur, Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus for Arsenal, Neymar Junior and Marquinhos for PSG, Thiago Silva for Chelsea, I know the value of Brazil,โ€ he reflected at the start of the tournament.

On Friday, his favourite team Brazil lost to Croatia. He now predicts a final between Argentina and France. โ€œCroatia is not a good team,โ€ he said matter-of-factly.

When the tournament began, Koori was sad to not be able to afford a ticket, which would cost a fifth of his monthly salary. But in late November, a regular customer gave him a ticket to watch Argentina face Poland, fulfilling Kooriโ€™s dream of attending a World Cup match. On his way to the game in the metro and in the stadium, he took selfies to record the experience.

He doesnโ€™t know his benefactorโ€™s name or where he works. โ€œI didnโ€™t ask,โ€ said Koori. โ€œI know heโ€™s from Mangalore, in the Karnataka state of India, and he loves me for my football love.โ€

Kooriโ€™s wife and three children, who he misses and can only see once a year, also share his enthusiasm for the sport.

He would like someday to work in a football-related job in a club or association. As for his current job, he likes it โ€œ50-50โ€. But he appreciates that it has allowed him to share his love of the beautiful game with strangers. โ€œIโ€™m sure I motivated people to love football,โ€ he said.

  • World Cup 2022: ‘A night I’m going to tell my children and grandchildren about’

At the Al Thumama stadium, there was an audible commotion of joy and shock, tears, hugs, and smiles.

Although Moroccan supportersย had dreamed of this occasion, few believed it would truly transpire.

As the first Arab and African team to advance to the World Cup semifinals, their team has achieved history.

They defeated Portugal, again another favorite.

A significant occasion for the continent and the area.

The tension was palpable on the pitch and in the stands. Morocco’s fans chantedย seerย or “go ahead” in Arabic, and let out a massive cheer as their team scored.

“This is a night that I’m going to tell my children and grandchildren about,” Soufiane Megrini told me.

“Morocco made us proud. We’re proud of our team and our coach.”

    Soufiane Megrini
Image caption, Soufiane Megrini said he was proud of his team

Soufiane told me how touched he felt at the massive Arab support for his team.

He said despite finding the Moroccan dialect difficult, some spectators from other Arab countries had wanted to take part in the chants, asking how to say the words.

“They were standing next to us… they were singing Moroccan songs,” he said.

Flags tell an important part of the Moroccan World Cup story. As I write this, the skyscraper outside my window is radiating red with a green star in the middle. But there were others alongside Morocco’s red and green: Fans carried Saudi Arabian, Iraqi, Egyptian, Palestinian, Qatari and Jordanian flags.

Thousands of fans have travelled from across the Arab world to be here in Doha. Many have told us they’ve changed their tickets every time Morocco won. Some may have to change them again to witness another historic match for their team.

Zineb Aklikm and her husband Aziz Benyahya travelled to Doha from Morocco the day before the game. They left their two-month-old baby back home.

“As a mother, I feel guilty,” Zineb said, “but I’ll tell him about tonight.

“I don’t think we actually realise what just happened. We were witnessing history.”

    Mohammed Rizki
Image caption, Mohammed Rizki said Morocco was here to win, not just to take part

Mohammed Rizki was beaming, the fringes of his traditional Moroccan hat moving as he spoke animatedly.

“I can’t really describe it,” he said.

“It’s a mix of feelings. We’re so happy about the win and excited for what’s coming.”

This is a mammoth sporting moment for Morocco. It’s the best performance in this team’s history, but it goes well beyond football. This is a much-needed moment of collective joy and pride for a whole region and a continent.

More crucially, this is a moment that has shifted the way Arab and African teams are viewed not just in the eyes of European and South American squads, but in the eyes of their own crowds.

One of the most shared videos after the game, apart from Morocco’s team celebrating, is the one of Cristiano Ronaldo crying – as Portugal exited the tournament.

One spectator told me that this is a moment of “confidence” – to stand head to head with the giants of this game and be real contenders and a formidable force.

“What we want now is the cup,” Mohammed Rizki said.

He added: “We’re not here just to be in the competition. We’re here to win.”

  • World Cup 2022: Brazil vs Croatia is the eighth 0-0 after 90 minutes at the tournament

The tallies were 0-0 seven games beyond the regular ending of the game at the World Cups in 1982, 2006, 2010, and 2014.

Croatia also drew goalless matches with Belgium and Morocco prior to the first quarterfinal encounter. Denmark and Tunisia, Mexico and Poland, and England and the United States all had scoreless matches.

Furthermore, Uruguay and South Korea tied 0-0. In the round of 16 encounter between Spain and Morocco, it was likewise deadlocked

The first 0-0 at a World Cup was a long time coming for the football world. There were two gameswithout a goal after 90 minutes just once, in the sixth round of the 1958 tournament. After 90 minutes of play at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the score remained 0-0. Denmark and the eventual world winners France were separated without scoring in the group stage. Even after Qatar, the current World Cup record for fewest goals scored will continue.

After 58 games, 154 goals were scored โ€“ 2.75 per game. The 1990 World Cup in Italy holds the negative record. Only 115 goals were scored throughout the tournament โ€“ โ€‹โ€‹an average of 2.21 goals per game. The record for the highest goal average at a World Cup will probably not be beaten either. When Germany became world champions for the first time in 1954, the ball landed in the net 140 times in 26 games โ€“ an average of 5.38 goals per game.

  • Explained: Why Griezmann’s last-gasp leveller was ruled out in France’s shock Tunisia defeat

WHAT HAPPENED?ย France were trailing 1-0 to Tunisia at World Cup 2022 when Griezmann volleyed home in stoppage time and looked to have salvaged a point. However, the goal was ruled for offside following a VAR check. The decision meant thatย France lost the game but still progress as group winners, while Tunisia pick up a memorable win but depart the tournament after finishing third in the group behind Australia,ย who beat Denmark in Group D’s other game.

WHY WASN’T IT GIVEN?ย VAR’s decision to disallow Griezmann’s goal did raise eyebrows and certainly did not impress the defending champions. The Frenchman was offside when the ball was originally played in but moved back into an onside position. Tunisia defender Montassar Talbi then headed the ball into the air, and Griezmann reacted smartly to volley the ball home. It appears the forward was deemed to be interfering with play despite the action occurring in the second phase.

  • World Cup 2022: Page, Bale tell Wales to consider achievements despite elimination

Wales’ World Cup elimination shouldn’t disappoint Rob Page and Gareth Bale, who also praised the Dragons’ efforts despite a convincing loss to England.

Wales held England at bay for the majority of the first half on Tuesday at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, but they were unable to recover as Marcus Rashford netted a pair of goals and Phil Foden added a late goal.

Wales’ exit from a major tournament without a victory was confirmed by a 3-0 loss, while England overcame their rivals in seven successive games, winning 14 and losing only one.

“The effort we put in I thought was outstanding, we addressed at half-time we could have been better with the ball,” the Wales manager told the BBC.

“I won’t have a bad word said about those players, they have given everything. The first goal is a wonderful strike, the second I am a little disappointed with but I don’t wantย to talk about negatives.

“We are disappointed to leave the tournament but that is the way to go out, the first-half performance was excellent.”

Bale was removed from the game at halftime after only managing four passes and seven touches, both the fewest of any starter in Al Rayyan, as the World Cup, which might have been his last, came to an unsatisfactory close.

Page confirmed after the game that a hamstring issue Bale sustained in the first half was the problem as the former insisted Wales will now “build for the future”.

“Bale felt his hamstring just five minutes before the interval so he had to come off,” Page added. “Joe Allen, that was his first 90 mins for ages, Ben Davies had to come off with an injury as well.

“Ethan [Ampadu]ย had to go to right-back, so I couldn’t be more proud of the effort honestly โ€“ just to get here was a massive achievement.

“My message is don’t be disappointed, we have to build for the future and to get to the World Cup is an unbelievable achievement for that group of players.”

Bale, who scored his nation’s only goal in the Middle East with a penalty in the opening 1-1 draw with the USA, echoed Page’s sentiment as he reflected on a first World Cup appearance for Wales in 64 years.

“We have to look at what we have achieved to get here and how far we have come, of course, we’re frustrated to go out but football is not easy,” Bale told the BBC.

“We didn’t quite live up to our expectations this tournament but we will take massive experience from it. Going forward, we need to look at how far we have come.

“To be at a World Cup, two years ago if you had asked us that we would have pinched ourselves. It is disappointing to go out but we will walk out of the changing room with our heads held high.

“It just didn’t happen for us at this tournament, the past two tournaments we’ve had success but it doesn’t always happenย โ€“ we can never have any regrets, though, we gave everything.”

On his future, Bale added: “I’ll keep going as long as I can and as long as I want to. It is a difficult moment but we go again, we have a qualification campaign starting in March.”

  • World Cup 2022: Lions still in the race after game with Serbia

Cameroon and Serbia played out a dramatic 3-3 draw at the al-Janoub stadium in Doha on Monday in the second round of Group G matches, leaving them in a tricky position with just one point each.

Castelletto (28th) opened the score for Cameroon. But the Serbs totally reversed the situation in less than 10 minutes, before and after the break, thanks to Pavlovic (45th+1), Milinkovic-Savic (45th+3), and Mitrovic (53rd).

However, the Indomitable Lions came back on level terms thanks to two goals from Aboubakar (63rd) and Choupo-Moting (66th).

In this group, the winner of the match between Brazil and Switzerland (20h00) will qualify for the 1/8th.

  • World Cup 2022: South Korea coach Paulo Bento backs Son Heung-min to step up against Ghana

In their second World Cup 2022 group match against Ghana, South Korea’s talisman Son Heung-min is expected to deliver, according to head coach Paulo Bento.

In their first game in Qatar, South Korea displayed grit and determination to draw with Uruguay.

They would have a solid chance of advancing to the competition’s knockout

โ€œHe was recently injured and was also adapting, trying to feel comfortable with the face mask. First he needed to feel at ease with his teammates and afterwards with the opponents.”

The second game will be different,โ€ Paulo Bento said ahead of the game.

Son has been one of the most in-form players at Tottenham this season, scoring five goals and providing two assists in 19 appearances so far.

The match is scheduled for the Education City stadium on Monday, November 28, 2022 at (13:00 GMT).

South Korea are second in Group H with one point.

  • World Cup 2022: Ghana struggles helped prepare, says Denis Odoi

Defender Denis Odoi says Ghana’s struggles earlier this year have helped to bring the squad together as they prepare for Thursday’s opening World Cup Group H match against Portugal.

Ghana, ranked 61st in the world, are the tournament’s lowest-ranked team and that is partly because of theirย poor showing at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), where the Black Stars failed to win a game and finished bottom of their group.

Since that failure coach, Otto Addo has recruited from the diaspora and Belgium-born Odoi, who plays for Club Bruges, is one of the newcomers who helped the squad qualify for Qatar ahead of fierce West African rivals Nigeria.

“The journey has been positive,” Odoi, 34, told the BBC World Service.

“I think sometimes you have to be deep to grow from that and learn from that. I think that’s what these these experiences brought.

“Obviously, Afcon was a very bad performance – one of the worst in the last few years and decades. We managed to grow and learn from that process.”

Addo won only one of his first seven games in charge of Ghana but the side have recorded victories in their past two friendlies against Nicaragua and Switzerland.

The latter was anย impressive 2-0 triumphย in Abu Dhabi last week, and Odoi says fellow new recruits, including Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams, are settling in well.

“We’ve used this last week to fit everybody in and to get used to the system and practice the defensive and offensive battles,” the former Fulham full-back said.

“And everybody gets to know each other a little bit better on the pitch.”

Despite their low ranking, Odoi believes Ghana are capable of upsetting Portugal, who were European champions in 2016.

“Everyone knows Portugal players are of a high level,” he said.

“We still have to play the game. It is not like Portugal has won this game. I am sure they are aware of that.

“If you look at the performances of other African counties, and Saudi Arabia [against Argentina], you still have to play the game.”

    Lamptey ‘settling in quickly’

Tariq Lamptey (left) in action for Ghana against Switzerland
Tariq Lamptey’s first two caps for Ghana have come in friendlies against Brazil and Switzerland

Meanwhile, Brighton & Hove Albion wing-back Tariq Lamptey is among those poised to make his competitive debut for Ghana.

The former England Under-21 international has featured in two friendly matches sinceย switching allegiance in Julyย – a decision his parents supported.

“They always said to me that they’re proud of whoever I represent,” Lamptey, 22, toldย the BBC’s World Football podcast.

“Ultimately, I was born in England, and they’re from Ghanaian background. Making my debut against Brazil was a really proud moment for both me and my family. It was a surreal feeling against some of the best players in the world.

“It’s every little boy’s dream to play football at the highest level. If I’m selected, then I will try and do my best.”

Lamptey joined Ghana for friendlies against Brazil and Nicaragua in France in September, and says he settled into the squad quickly.

“They were very welcoming and I was just able to get on the training pitch and get to work,” he said,

“Off the pitch, I knew a few of the boys before but it was really good to get to know everyone. It’s a good group.”

The reaction of the Black Stars fans, both on social media and from the stands, has also been important to Lamptey.

“I just want to say a massive thank you to the fans, because their love and support has definitely been received well,” the former Chelsea youngster said.

“I’m really grateful to have great fans like that.”

  • Ghanaians react to Bawumia’s ‘impeccable’ football skills

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has proven to be a man of many talents.

Aside from taking care of the Ghana economy, he knows how to handle a ball pretty well, especially for man of his age.

The 59-year-old statesman decided to motivate the senior national team, Black Stars, ahead of their opener against Portugal on Thursday, November 24.

โ€œThe moment has come for the Black Stars to take on the world. We have a group of talented players who have been selected and they cannot be intimidated by anyone. I want to urge the Black Stars to play their hearts out for mother Ghana. We can stand the world; we have done it before and we can do it once again. They should go out and emulate the historic deeds of their predecessors. God bless you all, we can do it. Go Ghana go, go black stars go,โ€ Dr Bawumia said.

Aside from his goodwill message he shared on his socials, the Vice president made some bold moves which have left many dumbstruck.

On Twitter, tweeps continue to share their opinion about Dr Bawumia’s Messi-like skills.

  • World Cup 2022: Iran players decline to sing national anthem

Iran declined to sing their national anthem before their World Cup match with England in an apparent expression of support for anti-government protests in their home country.

Some fans shouted and jeered during the anthem and others held up signs saying “Woman, Life, Freedom”.

Iran state TV cut its coverage of the anthem and switched to a previously shown wide shot of the stadium.

Mass protests have been met with a fierce crackdown in recent months.

They have been sparked by the death in custody in September of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was detained by morality police for allegedly breaking the strict rules around head coverings.

Human rights activists have said more than 400 protesters have been killed and 16,800 others arrested in a crackdown by Iran’s security forces.

Iran’s leaders say the protests are “riots” orchestrated by the country’s foreign enemies.

Iranian fans could also be heard chanting “Ali Karimi” in the first-half in reference to the former footballer who is one of the most outspoken critics of the Islamic Republic and one of the most popular faces of the protest movement.

The fans could also be heard chanting “Be-Sharaf”, which means dishonourable in Persian. This is an adjective that protesters have used against security forces in Iran.

Many opponents of the Islamic Republic have criticised the football team for not openly supporting the protests and for meeting with President Ebrahim Raisi last week.

Speaking before the game, Iran captain Ehsan Hajsafi said the players “support” those who have died.

Manager Carlos Queiroz has said his players were “free to protest” over women’s rights in their home country as long as it “conforms with the World Cup regulations and is in the spirit of the game”.

Iran’s players also covered up their national team badge when they played two warm-up internationals in September.

Let the kids play football – Queiroz

After Monday’s 6-2 defeat in Group B, Queiroz said the political unrest at home had taken a toll on his squad.

“To those who come to disturb the team with the issues that are not only about the football opinions, they’re not welcome because our boys, they’re just simple football boys,” the Portuguese said.

“Let the kids play the game. Because this is what they’re looking for. They wanted to represent the country, to represent the people, as any other national team that are here. And all the national teams, there are issues at home.”

The former Manchester United assistant added: “It is not right to come to this World Cup and ask them to do things that are not their responsibility. They want to bring pride and joy for the people.

“You don’t even imagine behind the scenes what these kids have been living in the last few days, just because they want to express themselves as footballers.”

Speaking about the incident at half-time, BBC Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker said: “It was a powerful and very, very significant gesture.

“Football is trying to use its power for good.”

The Iran players lining up for the national anthem
All the Iran players stood in silence as their national anthem played at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha

‘It was a lively football game, but it was much more than that’ – Analysis

    Shaimaa Khalil, BBC News, Doha

It was impossible to escape the symbolic gestures in the game. All of Iran’s players refused to sing the national anthem as it sounded across the Khalifa International Stadium.

A fan I spoke to was in tears as he heard it in the stands. “For my peopleโ€ฆ” he told me, his voice breaking. “They’re killing my people.”

Cheers for the Iranian side were loud and relentless. “Iran. Iran” sounded with the beat of a drum, adorned with the colours, the name and map of the country painted on it.

Women with their hair fully on display were wrapped with the Iranian flag, and screamed every time their team got close to the net. It was a lively football game, but it was much more than that.

In the sea of Iranian and English flags, a woman stood with a small poster saying “Woman, Life, Freedom” in solidarity with the protesters back in her home country. She didn’t want to show her face or share her name, but she did want her message to get across.

As I walked through the stands, another Iranian fan whispered to me: “Please tell our story. No pictures please. I want to go back to the country one day and I don’t want problems.”

  • World Cup 2022: Full fixtures, dates, groups and venues

  • Demichelis in ‘no doubt’ Argentina will reach World Cup final in Qatar

New River Plate head coach Martin Demichelis is inย “no doubt”ย that Argentina will make it to the World Cup final.

Argentina were last crowned world championsย when Diego Maradona inspired the 1986 triumph in Mexico, and have since lost in the final at the tournaments in 1990 and 2014.

Demichelis made 51 appearances for his country between 2005 and 2016, appearing at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups in South Africa and Brazil respectively.

The 41-year-old was unveiled as River Plate’s new boss on Wednesday and is confident La Albiceleste will make it to the final of Qatar 2022 on December 18.

“We are days away from the start of the World Cup, so I want to wish [Lionel] Scaloni a successful World Cup, to all the players, to the entire squad,” the former Manchester City and Bayern Munich defender said.

“A very special mention for the only Argentine player who also ended up joining the squad and who is ours: Franco [Armani], whom we need to support 100 per cent. My congratulations to him.

“I have no doubt that Argentina will play all seven games. I believe that by arriving only seven days before the World Cup, when normally a team is always working for three, four or five weeks, Argentina haveย the advantage that comes with a very solid base, with good energy, with a very strong emotional determination.

“I have no doubt that Argentina will play all seven games. I wish them all the best.”

  • World Cup 2022: It’s going to be difficult – Stephen Appiah on Black Stars chances

Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has refused to rule out the Black Stars despite being paired in a difficult group at the World Cup.

Ghana, who are returning to the global showpiece after missing out in Russia 2018 has been housed in Group H against Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.

The West African powerhouse will play Portugal on November 24 in its first game before taking on South Korea and the epic clash against Uruguay.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, the former Juventus star asserted the Black Stars admitted it is going to be difficult considering the group but did not rule Ghana out of the tournament.

โ€œItโ€™s going to be difficult, 2006 when we went to the World Cup in Germany we were underdogsโ€, Appiah tells Al Jazeera.

โ€œWe played against Italy we lost our first game and beat Czech Republic 2-0 who were number two in the world, played USA, number 5 in the world, we beat them. We are capable of doing that. We have to take it game after gameโ€.

Appiah added: โ€œWe play Portugal and not thinking about Uruguay. We concentrate on Portugal game and see what will happen. Our players are goodโ€.

Ghana will open their campaign against Portugal on November 24 at Stadium 974 in Doha.

Four days later, the Black Stars return to action with a clash with South Korea at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan.

Ghana will wrap up their group stage adventure with their much-anticipated encounter with Uruguay at Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah.

The Black Stars having missed out in the last edition hosted in Russia in 2018 will be hoping to improve their performance in Qatar after exiting the group phase during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Only three sides from the continent have ever progressed to the quarter-finals; Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, and Ghana in 2010.

Ghana will be hoping to progress from the group stage at this year’s tournament.

  • Former Ghana defender Sam Johnson reacts to Sports Ministryโ€™s decision not to make World Cup budget public

Former Ghana international Sam Johnson has reacted to Ussif Mustaphaโ€™s led Sports Ministry decision not to make the budget for the 2022 World Cup public.

The Sports Minister recently confirmed budget for Ghanaโ€™s participation in the World Cup 2022 has been approved but will not be made public until after the tournament.

Ussif disclosed government has budget for the entire tournament and that the amount will be made public when Black Starsโ€™ campaign ends.

“We have budgeted for the entire tournament, and where we are going to reach will determine how much we are going to spend,” he said on Saturday during Legends Walk.

โ€œSo until we finish the tournament we canโ€™t tell you how much we are going to spend, but we have a budget estimated for the entire tournament.โ€

Reacting to the decision, the former Ghana defender said, โ€œEveryone knows the situation at hand in the country, there is economic crisis, so if they make the budget public I think it is going to disorganize everythingโ€

โ€œWe are in difficult times as a nation, for me, to play safe, I think they will prefer not to mention but if they go there and perform and the budget is disclosed there wouldnโ€™t be any complainโ€ he said.

FIFA are said to have paid $2 million to Ghana as preparation fee and will receive $10 million if they exit in the first round. This means Ghana are guaranteed $12 million.

Ghana are preparing to face Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay in the group stage.

The World Cup will start on November 20 but Black Stars will play their first match on November 24 against Portugal.

After Portugal, Black Stars will play Korea on November 28 and then Uruguay on December 2.

Black Stars aim to reach the semi-finals for the first time.

  • World Cup 2022: Kizz Daniel confirmed to perform

In June 2022, Kizz Daniel said a prayer on Twitter: โ€œGod I want to perform [my song] ‘Buga’ for [the] world cup with a mass choir” and asked fans to “help me say amen.โ€

Four months after, the prayer has been answered.

The Nigerian singer-songwriter born Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe announced the good news by tweet-quoting his June post with the words: “and the Lord said see you in Qatar.”

Initially, Kizz’s fellow Nigerian Davido was announced as the African singer billed to grace the world stage in Qatar.

Other artistes involved with the 2022 FIFA event are Americans Lil Baby and Trinidad Cardona and Doja Aisha from Qatar.

The first time the World Cup is taking place in the Middle East, 32 countries will compete for the coveted trophy starting from Sunday, November 20.

Meanwhile, Kizz Daniel, nicknamed Vado the Great, has earned another number one hit just days after release with a song titled ‘Cough’. It features EMPIRE.

  • Suarez believes Uruguay can land sensational World Cup triumph

Luis Suarez believes Uruguay have enough quality in their squad to win the World Cup.

Uruguay finished third in the CONMEBOL qualification group, having recovered from a below-par start following the appointment of Diego Alonso as head coach.

They will face South Korea, Portugal and Ghana in Group H in Qatar, where Suarez could appear at a fourth successive edition of the tournament.

Suarez, who re-joined Nacional in July but is to leave when his short-term contract expires in November, believes the emergence of new Uruguayan talents offers hope of a third World Cup titleย for the Celeste.

Asked about burgeoning expectations, Suarez said: “This is generated by Pajarito [Federico Valverde], Darwin [Nunez], Ronald [Araujo] and Rodri [Bentancur]. Players at the top level in Europe generate this.

“This is a prize for the work that our country does. Uruguay will always try and compete at the World Cup at their maximum. To try to go as far as possible and why not to be the champions? Because we have players for this.

“Even though we know the difficulty that each game at a World Cup represents, we always have a real belief.”

Suarez is Uruguay’s all-time top goalscorer with 68 goals in 132 caps, while only Diego Godin (159), Edinson Cavani and Fernando Muslera (both 133) have appeared more often for the side.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona striker starred as Uruguay reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2010, albeit famously being red-carded for a goal-saving handball against Ghana in the quarters.

He has described the prospect of playing at a fourth tournament as a source of major satisfaction.

“It makes you feel proud to have the chance to be able to play a fourth consecutive World Cup,” Suarez said.

“It is a pride for our country and also my own pride that I have always fought and put in good performances in the national team.”

  • Toney targets World Cup after Brentford goal blitz

Ivan Toney has enjoyed a meteoric rise from League Two striker to England call-up โ€” and a spot on the plane to Qatar is next in his sights.

The 26-year-old is enjoying a stellar season so far, catching Gareth Southgate’s attention after firing Brentford into the top half of the table.

And Toney’s excellent showings have been rewarded with a call-up to the Three Lions squad for their Nations League games against Italy and Germany.

Ahead of England’s clash with the Azzurri tonight, we take a look at the attacking star’s prospects of booking his place at the World Cup.

    Meteoric rise

Toney started out in League Two with Northampton before being signed by Newcastle and loaned to a number of League One sides โ€” though the Magpies eventually sold him to Peterborough after he failed to make an impact at St James’ Park.

The forward was playing in the third tier as recently as 2020 but has never been fazed by a new challenge.

He scored 31 times in his first โ€” and only โ€” Championship campaign as Brentford won promotion via the play-offs, where he added another two strikes to his tally.

Last season was Toney’s first full Premier League campaign and he took the division by storm, notching 12 goals as the Bees comfortably avoided relegation.

The West Londoners’ No17 looks on course to better that total this term and will be hoping to make his mark on the international stage at the first time of asking.

Toney has been a man on a mission this season, scoring five Premier League goals in just seven games โ€” only Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Aleksandar Mitrovic have more.

The Northampton native’s incisive movement has seen him get on the end of seven big chances so far, scoring three.

While the fact he has missed four significant opportunities may seem like cause for concern, the rate at which he finds himself in those dangerous positions is a positive sign.

Additionally, his five strikes have come from an expected goals tally of just 2.78, allaying any fears over how clinical he is in the final third.

    Spot on from 12 yards

Not that anyone who watched Toney’s sensational hat-trick against Leeds would have any cause to doubt his finishing ability.

His treble certainly did not lack variety, scoring a penalty, a direct free-kick and an audacious dink.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank hailed the centre forward as the world’s best penalty taker โ€” and the league’s most in-form striker after Kane.

He said: “It’s a nightmare to play against [Toney].

“Also, I have said many times he is the best penalty taker in the world and hopefully I won’t get bored saying it.

“The free-kick? Wow! I said to him, if you want to take them, you have to practice. It was a classic Ivan goal, fantastic technique.

“Then [the] last one is just ridiculous, to dink it over the keeper and pull that finish out of the hat.

“Off the top of my head, looking at strikers on form, Harry Kane is number one but there is not a better striker [than Toney] after Kane on form.

“I don’t see a better one. Plus, England have been in a few penalty shootouts and if they want to win one, they need to pick Ivan.”

  • Alcohol to be served ‘in select areas’ of stadiums during World Cup 2022

Organisers of the 2022 World Cup have revealed that alcohol will be served “in select areas” within stadiums in Qatar.

The vantage points is necessary as the Fifa event will be taking place in a Muslim country in the Middle East for the first time.

The consumption of alcohol is prohibited in Islam.

CEO Nasser Al Khater told BBC Sport that “We want people to come and have experiences they will never forget.”

Al Khater said they are still “finalising our alcohol strategy” but this is the first time the Supreme Committee for Legacy and Delivery have publicly announced plans to allow fans to drink within the stadium perimeter.

Fifa have said ticket holders will have access to drink options within the stadium perimeter prior to kick-off and after the final whistle.

Inside the stadium bowl ticket holders will only be able to purchase non-alcoholic beer and soft drinks.

It marks a significant relaxation of the rules for the tournament as Qatar – like other countries in the Middle East – has strict controls on alcohol and it is illegal to consume it in public.

Licensed hotel bars and restaurants are the only places that usually sell alcohol, but visitors during the tournament will also be able to purchase a beverage at the Fifa fan festival in Doha’s Al Bidda Park after 18:30 local time.

During the 2019 Fifa Club World Cup, which took place in Doha and was won by Liverpool, supporters were able to consume alcohol in a site just outside the city.

Al Khater said additional locations “will be communicated in due course”, adding: “While alcohol will be available to those who want a drink in designated areas, it will not be openly available on the streets.

“What we ask is that people, when they visit, stick to these designated areas.

“We are incredibly excited to be welcoming the world to Qatar and the Middle East and Arab world. For many people it will be their first opportunity to see and explore the region.

“It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we are determined to use it to its fullest.”

  • 2022 World Cup: It isn’t about history but current performance – Charles Taylor on Asamoah Gyan joining Black Stars

Former Hearts of Oak attacker Charles Taylor has said it is impracticable for Asamoah Gyan to play with the Black Stars at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Speaking on Angel FM, Mr Taylor explained that the former Black Stars captain would not be fit enough to join the club after not being active for a while after leaving Legon Cities.

He noted that although Gyan has a remarkable history with the senior national football team, much cannot be said about his recent performance with local clubs.

“We have regular fitness and match fitness. Even those who get injured and return struggle to hit the ground running. We are not talking about history, we’re looking at current performance. He has done his bit for the country,” he said.

Charles Taylor added that “A fit and firing Gyan will have a free ride to the World Cup but let’s ask what he is training for?”

Asamoah Gyan has said he wishes rejoin the Black Stars and feature in the 2022 World Cup which will be held in Qatar.

He made the disclosure during an ร‚ย interview with the BBC.

Also, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, a former colleague of Asamoah Gyan has said Gyan would not be able to present a suitable physique when the tournament in Qatar commences.

On the matter, Qatar Legacy Ambassador, Samuel Etoo, has said though Asamoah Gyan is passionate about playing for Ghana, his ability to do so will be determined by head coach Otto Addo.

For Charles Taylor, he believes no competent coach would take back Asamoah to play for the Black Stars.

“I don’t think any competent coach will entertain this. We can’t take someone who is not playing for any club,” he said.

  • World Cup 2022 tournament set to start a day earlyร‚ย on Nov. 20

The 2022 World Cup tournament is expected to commence on Sunday, November 20, instead of November 21, 2022.

Host Qatar and Ecuador will also be opening the tournament with their game in place of the Senegal and Netherlands game.

Initially, the Qatar vs Ecuador game was fixed as the third match in the Group A opener.

The changes proposed follows a request from South American confederation Conmebol to Qatar and Ecuador indicating that it fits in with the tradition of either the hosts or the holders being involved in the opening match.

It is yet to be decided if the changes suggested would be implemented.

The final decision will be made by the bureau of the Fifa council, which comprises the six confederation presidents, plus Fifa president Gianni Infantino.

If it is approved as expected, it would not change the release dates for players, and Senegal against the Netherlands would be switched to 16:00 on the Monday, given only three games would be played instead of the present four.

England’s Group B match with Iran, which is being played at 13:00 on 21 November, would be unaffected, as would Wales’ opening match against the United States of America at 21:00 on the same date.
