French battlegroup conducts NATO combat drill in Romania

It is reported that about 600 French soldiers were deployed to take part in a military drill at a NATO battlegroup in Romania.

The aim was to test the 30-nation military alliance’s readiness on its eastern flank amid Russia’s war in neighbouring Ukraine.

The drill at a training range near Romania’s eastern town of Smardan on Wednesday involved some 200 military vehicles, including four French Leclerc battle tanks that practiced firing live ammunition.

Romania’s defense ministry said the main purpose of the exercise was to train the battlegroup “on the rapid deployment capability and execution of a combat mission” within a collective NATO defense operation.

The Leclerc tanks used are the same model French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday he asked his defence minister to “work on” possibly sending to Ukraine.

Kyiv has persistently requested tanks from its western allies to help its war efforts.

After much hesitation, that request was finally granted by Germany on Wednesday when Chancellor Olaf Scholz said his government would provide German-made Leopard 2 battle tanks and also approve requests by other countries to do the same.

In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last February, Nato bolstered its presence on Europe’s eastern flank, including by sending additional multinational battlegroups to alliance members Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and Slovakia.

This month, the alliance deployed two surveillance planes to Romania, from where they will fly missions for several weeks to monitor Russian military activity near Nato’s borders.

The Awacs aircraft, which Nato refers to as its “eyes in the sky”, belong to a fleet of 14 usually based in west Germany.

Since the war started, Awacs have patrolled regularly over eastern Europe and the Baltic Sea region to track Russian warplanes.

  • Zanetor Rawlings urges farmers to produce supermarkets-oriented foods

The Member of Parliament for Korle-Klottey constituency, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has admonished Ghanaian farmers to add value to their produce that can be sold in supermarkets and shops.

He charged farmers in the country to produce fruits and vegetables that meet the standards of supermarkets and shops.

This, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings believes the move can reduce the importation of foods into the country, which has a huge effect on the local currency.

“Farmers must also add value to their produce so that they can sell to the supermarkets and shops to reduce importation,” Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings said this during the Farmers’ Day Celebration organised by the Korle-Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA).”

She charged farmers to ensure that Ghana is self-sufficient when it comes to food production.

“Let us ensure that we ourselves are self-sufficient, food security is part of our national security and can at least ensure that we are ticking out one item on the list of our national security strategy,” the Legislator advised.

Dr. Agyemang Rawlings pleaded with the assembly and other Municipal District and Assemblies (MDAs), to provide lands for residents within the assembly to cultivate crops, which will serve as source of income for them.

“I will plead with our assembly to make provision for people who will like to have a piece of land where they can cultivate crops or rear animals within the urban centres that will not be a nuisance but will be a source of income and food to people,” the MP for Korle-Klottey.

Farmers’ Day was marked across all 16 regions, where farmers were honoured with prizes for pushing the agricultural sector.

The 38th National Farmers’ Day awards was held on December 2, 2022, at the Jubilee Park at Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

  • III defeat Zanetor despite the difficulty – NPP candidate

The parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Klottey Korle constituency Prince Appiah Debrah has expressed optimism about winning the seat in the upcoming parliamentary election.

The lawyer says he admits that the race is not going to be an easy one but was hopeful he will snatch the seat from the incumbent Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.

The NPP he told the host of Eboboba Kwabena Agyapong has united its front and will win the seat for the party to bring transformation to the people.

The lawyer said his deep understanding of the local political dynamics of the constituency and the alternative policies he brings on board will ensure his victory in the elections.

”The NPP has not had it easy in the constituency. The constituency is a cosmopolitan constituency and the majority are members of the NDC but with hard work, we will win the elections.”

He promised to solve the age-old problem of the poor drainage systems in the constituency which have often led to flooding in the constituency.

He vowed to tackle the issue once and for all to help prevent the damage caused whenever the constituency floods.

He is also promising to initiate a mentorship programme to help young people in the constituency to develop the needed skills for the job market.

He bemoaned the poor sanitation in the constituency especially along the coastal area, a situation he said has affected fishing in the fishing communities.

”We have a plan for sanitation and embedded in the sanitation programme is an anti-flooding programme. We keep talking about this and yet no solution has been found but when I come, I will bring it to a closure.”
