‘We are constantly asking ourselves how we can improve’ – MTN CEO after encounter with scammer

The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has shared a fascinating and eye-opening story about an encounter with a fraudster, underscoring the company’s ongoing efforts to combat fraud and protect its users.

Reflecting on his first year in office, the CEO recounted a personal experience where, in his first month, he received a call from a scammer claiming that he had made a transfer. The fraudster attempted to manipulate him into believing the transaction was legitimate. Rather than hanging up immediately, the CEO decided to keep the scammer on the phone for about 15 minutes, hoping to prevent the fraudster from targeting someone else.

“I decided to keep him on the phone for about 15 minutes, hoping that by doing so, he wouldn’t scam someone else,” the CEO explained, adding that the fraudster eventually hung up when he revealed his true identity as the CEO of MTN.

The encounter, which the CEO described as a reminder to remain vigilant, has fueled MTN’s commitment to enhancing its fraud prevention measures. He emphasized, “We are constantly asking ourselves how we can improve. We are applying the same customer-first mentality to tackle these issues and are exploring better solutions for our users.”

This experience has spurred the company to continue strengthening its measures against MoMo fraud and other scams, ensuring customers remain protected as they use the service. The CEO’s response to the incident reflects MTN’s dedication to constantly improving its services and safety features to safeguard the interests of its subscribers.

As MTN continues to innovate and improve, the CEO reassured the public that the company is determined to fight against fraudulent activities and keep its users safe from scams in the ever-evolving digital space.

  • Minister calls for urgent action on GHS1.2bn zoomlion debt

Minister calls for urgent action on GHS1.2bn zoomlion debt

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has called for swift intervention in addressing the government’s outstanding debt of GH¢1.2 billion owed to waste management service providers, particularly Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV on April 1, 2025, Ibrahim revealed that the debt, accumulated over the past two years, was inherited from the previous Akufo-Addo administration and continues to pose a significant challenge for the current government.

“I have discussed this issue with the Minister of Finance, and it has been confirmed that the state owes Zoomlion GH¢1.2 billion for waste management services that have not been paid for,” he stated.

He stressed the urgent need for a resolution, warning that failure to settle the debt could have severe consequences on sanitation across the country. According to him, private sector involvement in waste management is crucial, as the government lacks the necessary infrastructure to handle the growing waste crisis on its own.

“Zoomlion has made huge strides in building advanced waste management systems, but without them, we would be ill-equipped to manage Ghana’s waste problems. Their work in faecal waste management, in particular, has been indispensable,” Ibrahim noted.

Highlighting the potential risks, he warned of a possible nationwide sanitation crisis should Zoomlion halt operations due to financial constraints. He further urged the government to prioritize sanitation efforts, particularly in light of the recent cholera outbreak in coastal regions such as Cape Coast, Winneba, and Takoradi on October 24, 2023.

The minister also commended Zoomlion for its substantial investments in modern waste treatment and recycling facilities, which have played a critical role in addressing Ghana’s waste challenges. He recalled the negative environmental and health impacts of past waste disposal practices, particularly the direct dumping of faecal waste into the sea, a practice largely mitigated by Zoomlion’s liquid waste recycling plants.

“Zoomlion’s plants now process sewage into compost and charcoal, aligning with the ban on sea disposal introduced by former President John Dramani Mahama in 2016,” he explained.

Ibrahim reiterated his call for urgent action, emphasizing that ensuring timely payments to waste management firms is not just a financial obligation but a matter of national health and environmental safety.

  • Reject Zoomlion’s support to help you keep Accra clean – Manasseh to Buz Stop Boys

Reject Zoomlion’s support to help you keep Accra clean – Manasseh to Buz Stop Boys

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has urged the Buz Stop Boys not to accept any form of assistance from Zoomlion, cautioning that the sanitation giant’s involvement could undermine their credibility.

Manasseh alleged that successive governments have funneled billions of cedis into Jospong Group’s multiple companies under questionable sanitation contracts. He criticized the continued monopoly of Zoomlion, arguing that it has failed to significantly improve the country’s sanitation despite receiving vast resources.

” The country remains filthy, but the politicians claim they cannot cut Zoomlion’s monopoly because Jospong has the resources. They lie, forgetting that when the Kufuor administration sidelined City and Country Waste and other well-established sanitation companies in 2006 and awarded shady, nationwide sanitation contracts to Zoomlion, Zoomlion had no equipment and resources to compete. Out of those contracts, the company acquired resources. If any other company got the opportunity Zoomlion had, it would be resourceful,” he wrote.

He referenced a video where Zoomlion’s CEO, Elder Joseph Siaw Agyepong, was seen discussing Buz Stop Boys in a meeting with bloggers.

According to him, the company intended to donate to the group, with plans for widespread publicity. He warned Buz Stop Boys against accepting such support, urging them to maintain their independence and not allow Zoomlion to take credit for their work.

“I call on BuzStopBoys to reject Zoomlion’s support. Don’t allow Zoomlion to take credit for your work,” he wrote.

Manasseh concluded by calling for government resources to be channeled directly to local assemblies and groups capable of delivering tangible results rather than those reliant on media hype. He stressed that assemblies should regain control over sanitation management and have the freedom to contract efficient groups like Buz Stop Boys if necessary.

“Our so-called leaders should do the sensible thing by giving resources to those who can do the job and not those who rely on bloggers and media hype while the country remains filthy. The assemblies should be given back their resources to manage sanitation instead of the government channeling the funds to Zoomlion. If the assemblies need services, they can hire groups like BuzStopBoys to help,” he added.”

Buz Stop Boys, a collective of young professionals and tradespeople, have gained recognition for their grassroots approach to urban sanitation. Their hands-on clean-up initiatives have earned praise from both celebrities and politicians for their dedication to improving sanitation in Ghana.

  • Zoomlion promises to settle 9-month arrears owed to workers by December

Zoomlion promises to settle 9-month arrears owed to workers by December

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has pledged to clear nine months of unpaid salaries owed to its employees by December, following growing discontent among workers over the prolonged delay in payments.

Speaking on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia show, Madam Emma Adwoa Osei Duah, Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs for Zoomlion, acknowledged the arrears and outlined the company’s efforts to address the issue.

She explained that financial constraints have been a recurring challenge, but assured that the company is working to resolve the situation.

“We have to get money first to pay, then Contrage comes in before the government brings the money in some three months. This is not the first time such a thing like non-payment has happened, but we make sure we get money to pay them,” she noted.

Madam Osei Duah further revealed that the company is making arrangements to settle some of the outstanding payments, with plans to have everything cleared by December.

Her comments come as a group of Zoomlion workers are demanding their long-overdue salaries, with some expressing deep frustration over the impact of the delay on their lives. One worker highlighted the dire situation, revealing that they receive just GH¢250 per month, which translates to about GH¢8 per day.

“Two people are dead as I speak, and we buried one last Saturday. We don’t have money for medication. The salary is GH¢250 a month, which means about GH¢8 per day. Now, as we enter October, it becomes ten months without pay. How do we take care of our children in school? How do we get medication when we are sick?” she lamented.

The worker also voiced concerns over the lack of support for the families of deceased colleagues, who passed away without the company offering financial assistance for their funerals or benefits for their loved ones.

“When someone dies in service, the company doesn’t contribute anything towards the funeral. We, the leaders, have to push for the arrears to be given to the children of the deceased. There are no allowances or health insurance. Some of us have worked for 15 to 17 years without any pension or designated healthcare facilities,” she added.

Management has attributed the payment delays to contractors, but the workers argue that there is confusion over who is truly responsible for the holdup. “Contractors say they don’t owe any money, but our leaders say the government has to pay them before they can pay us. So, who is holding our money?” one worker questioned.

In response, the group is calling on relevant authorities to step in, seeking not only the unpaid wages but also a review of their salaries to reflect current living conditions and help them regain their dignity.

The Labour Act 2003 (Act 651) mandates that employees must be paid in a timely manner. Moreover, the National Tripartite Committee recently increased the national daily minimum wage from GH¢14.88 to GH¢18.15, effective from January 1, 2024. Workers are hopeful that this increase, alongside the company’s promise to clear arrears, will offer some relief.

  • Most “Aboboyaa” operators don’t dispose waste collected well – Zoomlion

Most “Aboboyaa” operators don’t dispose waste collected well – Zoomlion

The Communications Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Ernest Morgan Acquah, has criticized some local tricycle operators, commonly referred to as “Aboboyaa” for improperly disposing of waste collected from smaller communities.

“There’s a breach with the collection. We have an influx of Aboboyaa now, so we will consider them as picking the waste. But most of them don’t dispose it rightly. We have transfer stations that some take the waste to us, others don’t.

“The problem is that some of them, when they pick it from the households, we’re counting them as picking the waste as part of the 70%. But the 70% they will go dispose it off at different places – Motorway, sometimes at night. When you ply the Tema Motorway, you will see heaps of waste.”

He disclosed that currently, 70% of waste generated in Accra is collected, leaving 30% uncollected.

He clarified that major waste management firms, including Zoomlion, handle 80% of the waste collection, with the remaining 20% managed by local tricycle operators, commonly referred to as “Aboboyaa”.

This division of responsibility underscores the challenge of waste management in Accra, a city plagued by recurrent flooding, often worsened by blocked drains filled with refuse.

In an interview on Citi TV’s The Point of View, he said, “The sanitation people tell me we’re collecting in Accra something in the region of 70% to 80%.”

“That is what we’re told by those who do the research. What we’re finding on the ground is quite a lot, though we have been doing regular clean-ups with the Assemblies. In just the first quarter, we’re aiming for around 250 tons per assembly for the month, we’re exceeding it for every Assembly. People are just throwing in the gutters and all of that,” he said.

Mr. Acquah voiced concern about the lack of a suitable landfill site in Accra. He mentioned that the waste disposal challenge has been tackled through the establishment of recycling plants in all 16 regions.

“Currently, in Accra, about 80% of the waste we pick, we dispose it, only 20% goes into the recycling plant. Zoomlion has introduced the recycling plant across the country. Now we have a recycling plant in all the 16 regions,” Mr Acquah stated.

Ghanaians’ attitude is a significant barrier to effective waste management – Zoomlion

Prominent waste management firm in Ghana, Zoomlion has pointed to attitudinal challenges as a key obstacle to efficient waste management in the nation’s capital.

In an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show with Bernard Avle, Sophia Kudjordji, Corporate Affairs and Communications Officer at Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, expressed concerns about ongoing waste issues despite significant investments in the sector.

Despite expanding their workforce to enhance clean-up operations, challenges persist due to public attitudes towards waste disposal and weak enforcement by law agencies.

Kudjordji lamented, “Despite significant investments in waste management, it’s disheartening to see the amount of waste still present. We’ve increased our clean-up teams, but attitudes, behaviors, and enforcement gaps pose significant challenges.”

Accra, the capital, has long struggled with flooding, worsened by clogged drains filled with waste.

Zoomlion reported that 70% of waste in Accra is collected, with 30% remaining uncollected.

Moreover, major waste management firms, including Zoomlion, handle 80% of waste, while local operators handle the rest.

  • Public attitude making our work difficult – Zoomlion

Public attitude making our work difficult – Zoomlion

A leading waste management company in Ghana, Zoomlion, has identified attitudinal challenges as a significant obstacle to effective waste management in the nation’s capital, Accra.

Corporate Affairs and Communications Officer at Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, Sophia Kudjordji, expressed concerns about the persistent waste issues despite substantial investments in the sector during an interview with Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show.

She highlighted that the company recently bolstered its workforce by recruiting additional personnel to conduct clean-up operations aimed at maintaining cleanliness in the city.

However, these efforts appear to be hindered by the public’s approach to waste disposal and the lax enforcement by law enforcement agencies.

Kudjordji lamented, “With the level of investment that is going into waste management in the country, it is quite sad that anybody should find the level of waste we find around. Now we have even added more people who clean up in the afternoon but attitude, behaviours and enforcement from the part of law enforcement agencies, have made our work very difficult at times”.

Accra, the capital city, has long grappled with recurring flooding issues, exacerbated by clogged gutters laden with waste. Zoomlion asserted that while 70% of waste in Accra is collected, a significant 30% remains uncollected.

Moreover, the company highlighted that large waste management firms, including Zoomlion, are responsible for 80% of waste collection, with local tricycle operators, known as “Aboboyaa,” handling the remaining 20%.

  • Northern Region: 28 refuse dump sites cleared by Zoomlion

Northern Region: 28 refuse dump sites cleared by Zoomlion

Twenty-eight waste disposal sites in the Northern Region have been successfully cleared, contributing to the enhancement of sanitation and hygiene in the area.

Some of these sites had not undergone evacuation for more than two decades, posing potential dangers to residents.

The districts benefiting from this initiative include Savelugu, Tolon, Kpandai, Mion, Tatale-Sangule, and Saboba, as well as Nanton, Gushegu, Yendi, and Zabzugu.

This effort is part of the second phase of the nationwide refuse evacuation program aligned with the government’s Clean Ghana Agenda, aimed at addressing sanitation challenges throughout the country.

The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development (MLGDRD) is leading this undertaking in collaboration with various metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies (MMDAs) and the waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

During an interview with the Daily Graphic on the sidelines of the operation, Haruna Sulemana, the Northern Regional Coordinator for Zoomlion, disclosed that an estimated 155,887.91 tonnes of waste from refuse dump sites in 10 MMDAs across the region would be cleared in the second phase.

He emphasized that the exercise strictly adheres to environmental guidelines to minimize its impact on the region’s natural surroundings.

Expressing Zoomlion’s dedication to fostering a clean and healthy environment, Sulemana encouraged residents to maintain good sanitation practices.

Zakaria Imoro, the Municipal Director of Environmental Health, commended the ministry and Zoomlion for their efforts in improving the sanitation situation in the municipality. He mentioned ongoing collaboration with Zoomlion to strategically place refuse containers at key locations for efficient waste collection.

  • GES, Zoomlion commence waste segregation initiative in New Juaben South schools

GES, Zoomlion commence waste segregation initiative in New Juaben South schools

The Eastern Regional Education Directorate, in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, has launched a Waste Segregation pilot program in nine selected Basic Schools in the New Juabeng South Municipality.

The initiative aims to separate plastic waste from other waste generated in schools for recycling purposes and to reduce the accumulation of plastics in storm drains, rivers, and streams.

Godfried Caesar, the Eastern Regional Schools Health and Education Programme (SHEP) Coordinator, explained that the primary objective is to maintain clean school environments by segregating waste in different dustbins.

Plastic waste, such as water sachets and bottles, will be sold to recycling companies, and the proceeds will be used to meet some essential needs of the schools to enhance teaching and learning.

The project is also intended to mitigate environmental degradation caused by plastic pollution, as plastics buried in the soil through improper waste disposal contribute to pollution. Caesar called for support and collaboration from organizations to expand the project to all 52 schools in the Municipality and beyond, following a successful pilot phase.

Faustina Shardey, Eastern Regional Coordinator of Zoomlion Ghana, noted that the initiative aligns with the “Zero Waste” campaign ongoing in Accra. Zoomlion Ghana has provided each of the nine schools with two dustbins, liners, and other accessories to facilitate the implementation of the project.

  • It does not make sense to pay Zoomlion GHC800 but sanitation workers receive less than GHC250 – Haruna Iddrisu

It does not make sense to pay Zoomlion GHC800 but sanitation workers receive less than GHC250 – Haruna Iddrisu

Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu has urged both the State and Parliament to take additional measures to support sanitation workers employed by Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

He expressed concern over the disparity between the amount paid to Zoomlion by the State (approximately GH₵800) for each sanitation worker and the significantly lower amount (less than GH₵300) received by the workers themselves.

To address this issue, Haruna Iddrisu proposed a direct payment system, where the government would pay Zoomlion sanitation workers directly.

“When we pass the Youth Employment Act and the leader will recall, even some of the negotiations in his office, we said that separate beneficiary allowances from service charges. Zoomlion is a service provider. Let the Common Fund and the State pay him as a private contractor engaged to provide sanitation.

“Mr Speaker when you give him GH₵800 and beneficiaries end up getting GH₵200 or GH₵250. I do not think that that is neat enough or good enough. We should have a way of dealing with beneficiary allowances. It should go straight to those in the sanitation model,” he added.

Mr Haruna Iddrisu’s remarks come amid revelations from the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, stating that Zoomlion Ghana Limited has violated several regulations in its dealings with two District Assemblies.

According to the committee’s report, Zoomlion received payments from the District Assemblies Common Fund for the supply of equipment to the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai and Mampong districts. However, the company failed to fulfill its contractual obligations by not supplying the agreed-upon equipment, constituting a breach of the contractual agreements.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on December 13, a Member of the Committee, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor said “The committee established that Zoomlion Ghana Limited was paid some monies, but failed to supply the necessary sanitation equipment to the various assemblies.

“Mr. Speaker. The committee determined that deductions were made from the accounts of two assemblies, and paid to Zoomlion for the supply of sanitation equipment to improve the sanitation in their areas under what they call the Sanitation Improvement Programme, which is SIP. However, the company did not supply the items to the assemblies, contrary to regulation 79 of the PFM regulation 2019 LI 2378.”

Ghanaian-owned enterprise, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, specializes in delivering comprehensive waste management solutions. Their services encompass the entire waste management process, starting from collection, through haulage, transfer, sorting, recycling, and disposal.

  • We have not signed any contract to fumigate areas affected by dam spillage – VRA, Zoomlion

We have not signed any contract to fumigate areas affected by dam spillage – VRA, Zoomlion

Both the Volta River Authority (VRA) and Zoomlion Ghana Limited have denied entering into any contract for the fumigation of the Lower Volta regions affected by the recent spillage from the Akosombo Dam.

Initially, the VRA had informed JoyNews that they had signed a contract with the sanitation company for the fumigation operation. Ing. Kwame Osei Mensah Darkwa, the VRA’s Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, had emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety and livability of homes, public spaces, and the entire community in the aftermath of the floods.

However, in separate press releases dated Monday, October 30, 2023, both Zoomlion and VRA refuted any contractual arrangements for fumigation in the flooded areas.

Zoomlion’s Communication Directorate, while denying any contract with VRA, clarified that on October 23, 2023, Zoomlion had voluntarily donated relief items valued at over GHȼ500,000 to assist the spillage victims. Furthermore, Zoomlion expressed its intention to conduct fumigation operations as soon as the receding waters allowed for such measures.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to upholding corporate social responsibility standards and continuing to support the communities in the Volta Region and other regions across Ghana.

In contrast, the VRA stated that they had not awarded any such fumigation contract.

“We wish to state that VRA has not awarded any contract to Zoomlion for the fumigation of communities impacted by the controlled spillage.

“VRA acknowledges the assistance being offered by institutions, companies, groups, and individuals, and will continue to work with all stakeholders in our relief efforts for the communities impacted by the controlled spillage from the Akosombo dam,” it said.

  • Zoomlion refutes VRA contract claims for fumigating flood-impacted areas

Zoomlion refutes VRA contract claims for fumigating flood-impacted areas

Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a private waste management company, has refuted reports that it has been hired by the Volta River Authority to fumigate Lower Volta areas that have been devastated by floods caused by overflowing water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams.

“We want to emphasise that Zoomlion has not been contracted by VRA to undertake any fumigation activities in the said affected areas”, the company said, adding that the “allegations are baseless and lack any factual basis”.

“Management categorically refutes these misleading, false and unfounded assertions”, the company insisted.

The business announced that on Monday, October 23, 2023, a number of relief goods valued at more than 500,000 cedis were given to the spillage victims by its executives and management.

Additionally, it noted that “a sister company, Ecozoil, also donated almost 500 life jackets to the media and rescue team supporting the situation on the ground”.

“At the same presentation event, the company, in addition to the items presented, announced its intention to also fumigate the areas once the water had receded”, the company explained.

Zoomlioj said it remains “unwavering in our commitment to upholding our corporate social responsibility and providing steadfast support to the communities in the Volta Region and in other ways to our mother Ghana, despite the unwarranted distractions caused by such baseless accusations”.

“We want to reassure all stakeholders that our dedication to serving and uplifting communities remains resolute, and we will continue to prioritise the well-being and support of those in need, irrespective of such false allegations”, Zoomlion added.

  • Sanitation Minister calls on Zoomlion to provide waste bins for clean-up campaigns

The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Dr. Freda Prempeh, has appealed to Zoomlion Ghana Limited to contribute waste bins to support the national clean-up initiative, emphasizing that these bins would significantly enhance efforts to combat indiscriminate littering in major cities.

During her inspection of the ongoing National Clean-up Exercise, a collaboration between Municipal and District Assemblies and Zoomlion Ghana Ltd., in parts of Accra, the Minister made this request.

“I am extending a hand to Zoomlion to support this exercise with waste bins to make the exercise more effective,” she said.

Dr. Freda Prempeh highlighted the importance of waste bins in facilitating waste segregation and recycling, aligning with the ministry’s long-term objectives. She also stressed the need for education, especially for children, on waste segregation to instill responsible habits from an early age.

While commending youth involved in plastic waste segregation, she expressed concern about the lack of safety precautions among them, including the absence of masks, gloves, and handwashing facilities.

Dr. Freda Prempeh emphasized that waste segregation at the source, such as households, would prevent such activities by children.

In response to the Minister’s call, Zoomlion’s Public Relations and Corporate Affairs Manager, Mr. Ernest Morgan Acquah, pledged the company’s commitment to addressing the country’s sanitation challenges, highlighting the importance of waste segregation at the source.

Mr. Acquah emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility among the government, service providers, and citizens, urging everyone to actively participate in the monthly national clean-up exercise.

The nationwide clean-up event coincided with International Clean Up Day and adopted the theme “Cleaning for Safe, Healthy, and Sustainable Ghana.” The Minister emphasized the need for effective collaboration among stakeholders to achieve the government’s vision of a clean Ghana and sustainable WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) service delivery. Plans include media sensitization campaigns and extensive premises inspections by District Assembly staff as part of the clean-up effort.

  • Zoomlion responds to remarks made by PAC chairman

Zoomlion responds to remarks made by PAC chairman

The Management of Zoomlion Ghana Limited finds it quite regrettable, the publications in the media on comments attributed to the Hon. James Klutse Avedzi, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (PAC) on Wednesday, 20th September 2023, cautioning Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) against renewing contracts with Zoomlion.

The Company finds it unfortunate that such a directive will be given regarding our fumigation contracts with MMDAs, whereas the two parties have not been brought together to discuss any contractual issues. It is crucial to highlight that Zoomlion Ghana Limited operates with the utmost integrity and professionalism, and we have consistently upheld our contractual obligations with the MMDAs.

The publication suggested that Parliament had sanctioned the non-renewal of our waste management contracts. The Company is, however, unaware of any such indication from the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, or any of the other contracting parties, namely the MMDCEs. Moreover, Parliament is not party to the subsisting contract

Zoomlion on 8th June 2022 actively participated in a PAC hearing to address questions and provide comprehensive explanations with evidence regarding the issues raised in the Auditor General’s report. During this hearing, the company presented substantial evidence to demonstrate our commitment to fulfilling our contractual obligations to the MMDAs.

Following the PAC hearing, there has been no adverse report or further queries from the PAC suggesting any irregularities with Zoomlion’s performance. This, to us, indicates that the PAC was satisfied with the explanations and evidence we provided during the hearing. It is therefore surprising to us hearing such damaging reportage from the Chair of the PAC.

We firmly believe that it is in the best interest of and fairness to all parties involved to engage in open and constructive dialogue rather than resorting to actions and pronouncements that may tarnish the image of the company. Over the years, Zoomlion has consistently delivered world-class waste management services to various MMDAs, resulting in a significant reduction in sanitation-related health issues across the country.

We remain committed to upholding the highest standards of service delivery and compliance with all contractual obligations. We are open to continued collaboration and dialogue with the relevant authorities to address any concerns and ensure the continued provision of exceptional waste management services.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited continues to pursue its transformational agenda of establishing state-of-the-art waste recycling plants, waste water treatment plants and medical waste treatment plants among others across the sixteen regions of Ghana to modernize waste management in Ghana and will not be distracted by such publications.

Zoomlion is also set in digitizing payment for waste collection with the launch of its “change your borla style” E-payment system to make payment for waste collection in Ghana, a seamless and easy thing to do.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited remains a responsible corporate entity that works ethically with integrity to promote environmental sanitation across the country. We, therefore, find such publication a deliberate attempt to dent the hard-earned reputation of the company, both in Ghana and at the global level.

The Management of Zoomlion Ghana Limited wishes to reassure its stakeholders and the general public that it had done no wrong and calls on the media to be decorous in their reportage of such national reports against the company which has been at the forefront of driving sustainable waste management in Ghana and beyond.

Refuse dumps evacuation in Central Region starts

In collaboration with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDCEs), the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has initiated the evacuation of large dumping sites in the Central Region to address sanitation issues.

The waste management company responsible for the evacuation, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, stated that the nationwide exercise targets unauthorized dumping sites where refuse has been illegally disposed.

The company’s actions align with the current government’s clean Ghana agenda, aiming to resolve sanitation challenges across the country.

The evacuation included a 25-year-old refuse site at Essikafo Amba Nntem in Mankessim, resulting in a cleaner environment.

Zoomlion Ghana Ltd demonstrated preparedness, deploying trucks, excavators, and technical expertise to transport the rubbish to the final dumping site in Awoyaa municipality.

The Mfantseman Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Eric Pizzass Mensah, revealed that the illegality was mainly perpetrated by natives of the community who chose to create their dumping sites instead of using authorized ones.

He assured the public that the assembly had acquired a dumping site to manage and control waste in the municipality.

The residents expressed satisfaction as the major cause of discomfort in the community was addressed.

    Attakrom’s 30-year-old refuse heap cleared

Last Tuesday, July 20, residents of Attakrom in the Akuapem South Municipality, Eastern Region, were relieved when a 30-year-old refuse heap in the town was finally cleared.

Zoomlion Ghana, in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, carried out the evacuation as part of the government’s Clean Ghana Initiative in the region.

For years, the towering heap of refuse had been a major concern for the residents. Its pungent smell not only caused discomfort but also led to the spread of diseases like cholera, typhoid fever, and malaria in the town.

During rainy periods, the smell became unbearable, making it difficult for people to approach the dumpsite or even pass by. The Odikro of Attakrom, Nana Anoma Amoani, expressed dissatisfaction with the situation and made a request to the government for assistance. In response, the government, in partnership with Zoomlion, came to their rescue by clearing the refuse.

Nana Anoma Amoani conveyed his gratitude to both the government and Zoomlion for their prompt action, which brought relief to the inhabitants of Attakrom.

Faustina Shardey, the Eastern Regional Coordinator of Zoomlion, assured the community that they would be provided with a new container to dispose of their refuse at the same location. The container would be emptied regularly, based on the rate of refuse generation in the town.

The government’s Clean Ghana Agenda aims to clean up all communities and towns affected by filth in the region, ultimately reducing the prevalence of diseases like malaria, cholera, typhoid fever, and dysentery.

Paul Mensah, the Akuapem South Municipal Environmental Officer, praised Zoomlion and the government for addressing the health hazard posed by the decades-long refuse heap. The evacuation has brought relief to the residents, who no longer have to endure the foul smell and the associated health risks.

A resident, Rahinatu Alhassan, expressed her joy and relief that the refuse heap, which had been a source of various diseases and discomfort, had finally been removed. Now, the town can breathe easy and live in a cleaner and healthier environment.

  • Waste Treatment Plant in Western Region commissioned

Waste Treatment Plant in Western Region commissioned

Government has commissioned a waste treatment plant in the Western region of Ghana.

Speaking at the commissioning executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, he expressed confidence in the capabilities of Ghanaian businessmen to contribute significantly to the nation’s progress and job creation.

He also emphasized the need for deliberate policies aimed at protecting and promoting Ghanaian entrepreneurs to foster the country’s growth and development.

Dr. Agyepong highlighted the missing link to achieving this potential, which lies in providing encouragement and support to elevate Ghanaian entrepreneurs to capitalize on development opportunities and provide innovative solutions for growth.

The newly commissioned waste treatment plant has a designed capacity of 1,000 cubic meters per day and is a significant upgrade from the unstructured waste disposal at Sofokrom.

Dr. Agyepong revealed that the establishment of Zoomlion years ago aimed to lead the way in waste management solutions by transforming waste from being considered a problem to becoming a valuable raw material for the next production cycle.

The project aligns with the Ghanaian government’s vision of making the country the cleanest in Africa.

Apart from its waste treatment capacity, the facility is expected to generate approximately 400 direct jobs and over 1,000 indirect employment opportunities.

The project was designed and implemented with the assistance of Pureco KFT-Hungary, a Hungarian company that manufactured the machinery and ensured the facility meets high international standards and safety protocols.

Hungary’s State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Tristan Azbej, praised the completion of the project as a significant milestone in the partnership between Ghana and Hungary.

The Western Regional Minister, Mr. Kwabena Darko-Mensah, also lauded the completion of phase one of the project, which will greatly improve waste treatment in the region, where currently only 10 percent of the faecal waste is treated.

This is in line with the ongoing digital agenda,” she stated.

  • Zoomlion set to establish a circular economy in Ghana

Zoomlion set to establish a circular economy in Ghana

To assist the development of a circular economy in Ghana, trash management behemoth Zoomlion Ghana Limited has helped informal waste pickers, its own employees, and other waste managers expand their capacities in waste material recovery at the Kingdom of Thailand.

The idea of a circular economy establishes a production and consumption system that recycles waste products in order to prolong their useful lives.

At the Asean Institute of Recycling and the Wongpanit International firm Limited in the Thai province of Phitsanulok, the team has started a rigorous two-week training course in urban mining and garbage recovery.

A Communications specialist with the Jospong Group of Companies, Isabella Gyau Orhin who is with the team in Thailand in an interview disclosed that “the concept of circular economy offers opportunities by reducing waste and creating employment opportunities. The Jospong Group is committed to developing Ghana’s recycling ecosystem where there is Zero tolerance for waste material hence the need to learn from global standards”.

“The team comprised of informal waste pickers who have demonstrated commitment in waste recovery, selected leaders of the church of Pentecost who are leading the Church’s Environmental Care Campaign in Ghana and waste management technocrats within the Jospong Group .”

Mrs. Orhin provided an explanation stating that the selection of Phitsanulok, also known as the City of Recycling in Thailand, was a deliberate and strategic choice. This decision was based on the city’s zero waste model, which emphasizes the use of recycling to establish a circular economy. The model relies on simple technologies and encourages community involvement, aligning with Jospong Group’s mission to enhance people’s lives and protect the environment.

During the event, General Vichit Yathip, a Senior Government Advisor and Senator of Thailand, delivered a welcome address. He encouraged the team to adopt Thailand’s circular economy model, highlighting the success achieved by the Wongpanit International company through waste recycling.

“The Wongpanit business model is sustainable and has created employment opportunities for the people of Thailand and also saves the environment from pollution”, he emphasised.

The President of Wongpanit Group, Dr. Somthai Wongcharoen who has been crowned in Thailand as “The King of Recycling” in his statement expressed his excitement for the partnership between the Jospong Group and the Wongpanit Group as both businesses are inclined towards saving the environment and creating employment for their people.

He said the team is being trained in “urban mining business with recycling” which will help convert waste to valued resources in areas of plastics waste, paper waste, metal scrap, electronic waste, glass scrap, and innovations in creating value from municipal solid waste according to the circular economy concept.

Dr. Somthai added that during his visit to Ghana he noticed huge opportunities to grow the economy of Ghana through the circular economy concept hence the training is heavily based on “hands-on experience and practicals.”

The Coordinator of the Environmental Care Campaign of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Samuel Gakpetor, said the model will work well with the aggregators trained by the Church of Pentecost.

“As a church we are interested in the total wellbeing of our members and not only in their spiritual lives. Since the Church has become the centre of the lives of our members, we must endeavour to add value to every facet of their values, he hinted. Thus, this concept of recycling will create jobs for church members and help improve their economic situations.”

The 30-member  team is working with Wongpanit and its franchise outlets in Thailand to help easily implement the model in Ghana.

  • Zoomlion crane falls of a trailer, blocks main Takoradi – Accra road

Zoomlion crane falls of a trailer, blocks main Takoradi – Accra road

A lowbed trailer belonging to Ebeko Services, a logistics company, carrying a new Zoomlion crane from Accra to Takoradi was on Tuesday morning involved in an accident around the University of Cape Coast (UCC), completely blocking the main highway.

This caused heavy traffic on that stretch.

The grey and green crane with registration number GT 5975-23 fell off the trailer with the number GC 9677-12, and landed on its side blocking the Accra-bound side of the road few meters after the UCC West Gate.

There was no injury or fatality.

The accident happened around 0830 hours, resulting in a gridlock on the highway, compelling drivers to use the UCC campus as a bypass under the direction of security personnel.

A joint team from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Service (GNFS) directed traffic as efforts were made to clear the road when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) arrived on the scene around 0920 hours.

The crane could not be lifted after about two hours of trying but one side of the road was cleared for traffic to flow.

Some eyewitnesses who spoke to the GNA gave varying accounts of speeding and overtaking on the stretch.

The driver of the trailer, who only gave his name as Atsu, said the accident was caused by a speed ramp after one of the stands under the trailer hit the ramp and caused the lowbed to lose balance.

The security personnel available were not immediately ready to speak on the incident.

Traffic was moving slowly while the crane

was still on the road as at the time of filing this report.

  • KOKMA tows 50 cars for unauthorised parking

About 50 cars parked at unauthorised places along the roadside within the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KOKMA) were yesterday towed away by the Assembly.

Shop owners and other sellers with dirty frontages were also made to clean them immediately.

This happened when the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey led a team from the Assembly and the City Response Team of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) on a decongestion exercise within the municipality in Accra yesterday.

Undertaken in conjunction with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the exercise was to ensure that citizens strictly adhered to the byelaws of the ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage,’ which mandated them to keep their frontages clean.

The exercise which attracted lots of onlookers and patrons began from Circle through to Kaneshie, then to some parts of the Accra Central Business District (CBD).

Meanwhile, there were a few people who showed displeasure with the conduct of the exercise.

Interacting with some sellers, Mr Quartey implored them to strictly adhere to the bye-laws and report offenders for them to be dealt with accordingly.

“We are not here to move you away from where you sell. What we are asking is for you not to sell on the pavement,” he stated.

“I also urge you to report anyone who violates the bye-law to the security for them to be dealt with,” he added.

Mr Quartey stressed that cleanliness could not be over-emphasised as it was the basis of the overall wellbeing of all and sundry including animals.

“The importance of cleanliness in our lives cannot be denied. Maintaining a clean environment is for the health of all humans, as their health completely depends on the atmosphere,” he said.

“A bad environment is solely responsible for spoiling the health of the people around. Dirt and disease go together,” he added.

Mr Quartey, therefore, urged all to, as a matter of urgency, serve as checks on themselves and their neighbours to ensure that the city was clean.

  • Zoomlion commits to expand recycling, compositing facilities from 3,000 to 10,000 tons per day

Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, has reaffirmed Zoomlion Ghana Limited’s commitment to provide specialized solutions for a national integrated waste management system.

He stated that efforts were being made to increase the capacity of its recycling and composting facilities from 3,000 tons per day to 10,000 tons per day in order to meet this goal.

He insisted that doing this would help the nation manage trash more effectively.

He pledged that the private sector would continue to support the government in its efforts to improve upon sanitation in the country.

According to him, the government had been instrumental in the construction of 16 state-of-the-art integrated recycling compost plants (IRECoP) in the16 regions, all in an effort to deal with waste.

Dr SiawAgyepong was delivering a presentation at a two-day stakeholder engagement workshop organised by the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR) with support from UNICEF on Friday, in Accra.

In his presentation on Private Involvement in the Sanitation Sub-sector Performance 2018 -2021 and Outlook Performance for 2022-2025, he admitted that the 16 IRECoPs could not have been made possible without the “active involvement” of the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Mrs Cecilia Abena Dapaah,

He said the Sanitation Minister also played a crucial role in a 16-million Euro facility from Hungary which was used in the construction of waste management facilities in the 16 regions.

The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources also helped in the country’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in disinfection and distribution of one million bins, he added.

However, to achieve greater results and sustain the gains made in the sector, DrSiawAgyepong reiterated the need for the involvement of all stakeholders in the sanitation space.

“I’ll urge each and everyone to help maintain a serene environment adding that you cannot do away with poverty if you do not deal with water and sanitation,” he advised.

MrsDapaah, strongly called for the protection of the country’s water bodies, especially in the light of the fact that the water bodies serve as sources of potable water for Ghanaians.

According to the Minister, more public places of convenience would be built across the country as part of measures to stop the practice of dislodging faecal matter into water bodies.

“It is my prayer that by 2030, Ghana would be where it’s supposed to be in terms of sanitation,” she said.

She disclosed that the water policy was ready to be validated, and thus pleaded with the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to extend pipe-borne water to rural dwellers.

On this score, Mrs Dapaah heaped praises on donor partners such as UNICEF for supporting her ministry.

  • GPRTU denies towing contract with Zoomlion

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has discredited reports that the union has a deal with waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, to impose a towing insurance service on members of the union.

Denying the reports in a statement issued on August 19, 2022, Zoomlion noted that: “we have no interaction with Zoomlion in connection with our life-saving and innovative towing insurance, and never will.

Indeed, we are aware that Zoomlion’s business is waste management, and so our connection with them is purely waste collection and nothing else,” the statement stated.

A statement issued and signed for the General Secretary of the union, Godfred Abulbire, last Friday, said the said allegations must have originated from “ignorant and treacherous” individuals.

It added that persons who were behind the false publications were only engineering the “wild allegation in an effort to spark an unnecessary uproar within our rank and file”.

    Retraction

The union called for an unqualified apology and a complete retraction of the allegation by any individual or media organisation who originated the publication to bring peace and encourage people to support the towing initiative.

“All such people and media organisations should apologise and retract what has been said, or we will advise ourselves,” the union stressed.

The GPRTU added that it had done broader consultations among its members and got the approval of the National Executive Council (NEC) before rolling out the initiative.

“Over the years, we have taken decisions that have kept our union together without membership ballot.

It is, therefore, unfortunate that someone would want to stir the settled mud within our rank and file for his personal aggrandisement even when it is obvious we meant well for every Ghanaian,” the statement added.

    Towing service

The union observed that against the backdrop of 1,300 persons being killed in road accidents in Ghana between January and June this year, it found the towing service a good step to reduce the crashes.

The union noted that some of those crashes were largely associated with stationary vehicles on the road, as reported by the National Road Safety Authority.

It added that the fact that 8,000 people sustained various degrees of injuries during the same period added to the compelling evidence for a road towing service.

The union stressed that because of the seriousness it attached to the towing project, members would not be allowed to load from their stations if they failed to subscribe.

“We have launched an app to aid our members easily get access to towing vehicles in times of need at anytime and anywhere, and the over 2.6 million vehicles operated by our members shall subscribe to the initiative through the app, with details of their vehicles,” the union stressed.

    Background

The GPRTU launched a new digital vehicle towing policy last week to promptly remove breakdown vehicles from the road.

The union directed that effective October this year, all of its drivers were required to subscribe to the mandatory vehicle towing system.

The new towing system, which is being rolled out in partnership with the Road Safety Management Service Limited (RSMSL), a private entity, allows drivers to subscribe to an online application to deliver the service.

The contractual agreement between the GPRTU and RSMSL requires vehicle owners to pay annual subscription fees depending on the type of vehicle.
Per the payment regime, taxis will be charged GHC50; trotros, GHC80; long buses, GHC300; and articulated trucks, GHC500.

The exercise followed a virial video by Madam Hajia Maria, appealing to the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and the sanitation ministry to intervene in ensuring that a hump of refuse in the community which was posing health risks to the residents was cleared.

  • Over 300 markets closed for second round of fumigation in Ashanti Region

Over 300 markets in the Ashanti Region have been closed to allow for the second phase of the national disinfection, fumigation and cleaning exercise.

The exercise is being carried out across the country in markets and other public places.

In the Ashanti Region, the exercise is taking place in all 43 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies as well as three other sub metros.

Speaking to the media at the beginning of the exercise, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah urged all traders and affected persons to comply with the directive to close their shops, as he says the exercise is for the general good of the society.

He said the assembly is also making sure that value for money is achieved in the disinfection exercise, hence has deployed assembly members to keenly monitor the exercise in their respective communities.

“Our eyes are open and we will make sure we achieve value for money. All the assembly members have been directed to go to their areas with the unit committee members to make sure that the people [Zoomlion officials] are doing the work they have been brought in to do,” he said.

On his part, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Chief Executive, Osei Assibey Antwi, noted that the his outfit has put adequate measures in place to ensure the exercise effective to help achieve the desired results.

“We are appealing to traders in the various markets that whatever inconvenience this exercise will come with, they should forgive us. We have to do this to contain the pandemic and to keep our markets clean and tidy so they should endeavour to shut down their shops at least two hours within which the exercise will be completed.”

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional General Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Philip Yeboah Asante says they are confident that the exercise will help curtail the spread of COVID-19.

“But for the first phase of fumigation, the COVID-19 figures would have been higher than we are seeing now. Now that it is known that the virus can even stay in the air for some hours, it is better that we do this exercise frequently and that is why the government says we are going to do this every quarter.”

The fumigation and disinfection exercise started after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in Ghana. The government through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in collaboration with the various assemblies has been embarking on the exercises at markets and other public places as part of measures to curtail the spread of the virus.

  • Coronavirus: GEDA engages Zoomlion to disinfect Opera Square

The Ghana Electrical Dealers Association (GEDA) on Wednesday engaged Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL) to disinfect its business space at Opera Square, Accra, also known as Cowlane.

The exercise, which started around 7:00 a.m., saw ZGL deploy one of its boom atomisers together with a disinfection crew with knapsack spraying machines to disinfect the area.

The crew disinfected the two lorry terminals at the Opera Square area, open spaces along the Old AMA traffic light, Judicial Service, the Ghana Post Office, and the Rawlings Park areas, and the Cowlane Central Mosque. Also disinfected were about 400 shops and stores at Opera Square.

Speaking to a cross-section of journalists after the exercise, the 2nd Vice-Chair, GEDA, Hajia Munia Buari, lamented that the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has not only slowed down their business but dealt a devastating blow to them.

“Honestly, business has been very slow because a lot more people now do not come to trade with us due to Covid-19,” she bemoaned.

In addition, Hajia Buari said members of GEDA had also not been able to import electrical materials from China because of travel restrictions brought about by the Covid-19 disease.

That, coupled with the low patronage of their business, has dealt a severe blow to GEDA members, she stressed.

She explained that GEDA engaged Zoomlion to undertake the exercise to protect their members and also keep their customers who come there to trade with them safe from the pandemic.

“And even before the announcement of the partial lockdown in some parts of the country, GEDA had ensured that all its members religiously implemented the Covid-19 preventive protocols. All shops/stores under our umbrella association were to have Veronica buckets together with liquid soaps and alcohol-based sanitisers to be used by them and their customers. And, I must confess that our members have fully complied with these protocols,” she said.

The 2nd vice-chair of GEDA, however, indicated that effective Thursday, June 25, the association will enforce the wearing of nose masks.

“In fact, any of our members who fails to comply with this directive would not be allowed to trade in the area!” she cautioned.

She disclosed that the association had also put in a request for Covid-19 stimulus package for its members.

“And if this package is made available to us, we believe it will cushion members of GEDA from the harsh brunt of the Covid-19 pandemic on our business,” Hajia Buari expressed.

In a brief remark, the General Manager, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Greater Accra Region, Mr Ernest Morgan Acquah, explained that the essence of the exercise was to keep the Opera Square which is the trading hub of GEDA members safe and clean from the attack of the Covid-19 disease.

However, he contended that the disinfection was only one of the measures in the war against Covid-19.

Against this backdrop, he entreated members of GEDA to unfailingly observe the other Covid-19 safety protocols which included regular washing of hands under a running water, practising social/physical distancing and using alcohol-based hand sanitisers.

The adherence of these protocols together with the disinfection will help protect GEDA members and its customers from the virus attack, he advised.

“…and I must stress that we have prepared very well to welcome them back to school,” he said.

However, he pointed out that the school will have a challenge with the social distancing protocol.

“It will be difficult for us to observe the social distancing protocol,” he admitted.

The reason, Mr. Kwarteng explained, is because the school does not have enough space in the various dormitories to be able accommodate all the final-year students, of which government has directed that there should be 25 in each dormitory.

He therefore used the opportunity to appeal to the traditional council and municipal chief executive for the area to come to their aid.

That notwithstanding, he commended Zoomlion for the exercise.

At the Presbyterian SHS, the Assistant Headmaster-Domestic, Mr. Michael Boamah Gyamfi, admonished the students who are scheduled to come back on Monday, June 22 to comply with all the COVID-19 protocols.

He advised parents against visiting their children while in school for the eleven weeks that they will be there.

He also highlighted that his school will have some difficulties enforcing the social distancing protocol.

For her part, the Principal of Bechem School for the Deaf and Blind, Mrs. Alice Oppong Adubia, made a passionate appeal for central government to assist them with Veronica buckets, hand sanitisers, nose masks etc.

“Because we use signs to communicate, we are appealing for government to help provide us with special face masks without which it will be very challenging for us to teach,” she said.
