Ghana-England clash: We know it’s going to be a tough game – Semenyo

Ghana’s next World Cup fixture is scheduled for Tuesday June 23, at the Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts (USA). The team had quite a hard time breaking Panama however securing a 1-0 win in stoppage time thanks to Caleb Yirenkyi.

Despite the win, the Tuesday match remains one of Ghana’s biggest challenge yet as acknowledged by
Black Stars and Man City forward Antoine Semenyo.

Speaking to Ghana FA Media, Semenyo indicated that “We know it’s going to be a tough game. I feel like we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves. We know we want to win that game, but we know it’s not going to be easy either”.

Consequently, he said the squad will “Make sure we recover well now and make sure we train well leading up to the England game.”

The 26-year-old also expressed excitement about coming up against familiar faces from the English game, describing the fixture as an opportunity for Ghana to make a statement on the world stage.

“It’s going to be different for sure. I’m looking forward to the challenge. I think everyone in the Ghana team is looking forward to it. We want to prove a point. I’m just going to leave that message out there,” he added.

A positive result against England would significantly strengthen Ghana’s chances of progressing from the group stage before they conclude their campaign against Croatia on June 27.

The Black Stars are chasing a place in the knockout rounds for the first time since their historic run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 World Cup and will be eager to build on the momentum generated by their opening victory over Panama.

Meanwhile, given the country’s current economic situation, government is unwilling to sponsor supporters abroad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, President Mahama said.

Citing the nature of this year’s World Cup which is set to be hosted across three different nations, America, Mexico and Canada, President Mahama said it has increased the financial and logistical burden compared to the previous tournaments that was held in a single place.

This he said makes fans sponsorship unsustainable with a staggering cost estimate of nearly $11,000 per supporter, a figure he described as well beyond what the state can responsibly absorb under current economic conditions.

Consequently speaking at a diaspora town hall meeting in London on Sunday, May 31, President Mahama noted that,

“We cannot, you know, spend our money in that manner. The cost approximates for each person to be fed, accommodated, transported, and all that to watch the games, tickets, and all that is estimated at almost $11,000,”.

Man City condemn racist abuse against Semenyo, Marc Guéhi after Everton match

Manchester City have spoken out against racist abuse aimed at Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guéhi after their 3-3 draw with Everton on Monday, May 4.

Management of the club, in a formal statement shared on Tuesday, May 5, commended the Everton police for their swift action after it was announced that the Semenyo abuser had been apprehended.

“Manchester City strongly condemns the racist abuse directed towards Antoine Semenyo at yesterday’s match. We welcome the swift action taken by Everton and the police to identify the individual responsible”, parts of the statement read.

They also expressed their displeasure over racist attacks targeting England international defender Marc Guéhi on social media after the draw. Man City expressed their support to their players, highlighting their zero tolerance for any form of discrimination in all games.

“We are also incredibly disappointed to hear that Marc Guéhi was subject to a series of vile racist social media posts last night. We will continue to offer our full support to both Antoine and Marc and never accept discrimination of any kind in our game,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the police have apprehended the 71-year-old Everton fan from Nottinghamshire, who reportedly racially abused Antoine Semenyo on a “racially aggravated public order offence”.

The just-ended Man City-Everton game, which happened on May 5 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, marks the third time in this Premier League season that Black Stars forward Antoine Semenyo has been subjected to racist abuse.

Similar incidents of racism targeted at Semenyo

Ghana international forward Antoine Semenyo last month reported fresh racial abuse targeting him on social media. The Man City player showcased a stunning display during his side’s match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in London on Sunday, April 12, marking the second time in the 2025/26 English Premier League season.

Semenyo, who completed the full 90 minutes, later shared a post on Instagram celebrating the victory but was met with a racially abusive comment.

Responding to the abuse, he wrote: “It’s started again…”, referencing a previous incident in December 2025 during his spell at AFC Bournemouth, when he was targeted following a 4-2 defeat to Liverpool.

The incident has reignited concerns about the persistent problem of online racism in football, despite ongoing anti-discrimination campaigns across the sport.

Meanwhile, the Ghana international was subjected to racist abuse during a clash on Friday, August 15, against Liverpool.

During the first half of the Premier League opener, Semenyo was preparing to take a throw-in when a 47-year-old man made an offensive comment at him. According to reports, Semenyo asked the man to repeat what he said; he did and even threw gum at him.

Semenyo immediately reported the incident to referee Anthony Taylor, who paused the match in the 28th minute. The suspect was subsequently seen leaving the stadium with police and was later held in custody for a racially aggravated public order offence, according to Merseyside Police on Monday.

He was, however, granted bail on the condition that he does not attend any regulated football match in the UK and is prohibited from going within one mile of any designated football stadium. A police investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Reacting to the incident, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, in an official statement issued on Sunday, August 17, said the sport has zero tolerance for discrimination and any form of abuse, praising Antoine’s resilience and strong display despite the emotional distress.

“It is absolutely unacceptable to see the racist abuse aimed at AFC Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, which led to a stoppage of their Premier League match against Liverpool FC at Anfield last night. Football has no place for racism or any form of discrimination. Antoine’s courage and performance on the pitch, despite such adversity, is a powerful example of strength and dignity for players worldwide,” parts of the statement read.

Ghana international forward Antoine Semenyo has reported fresh racial abuse targetting him on social media. The Man City player showcased a stunning display during his side’s match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in London, on Sunday, April 12.

Meanwhile, in May last year, FIFA announced that it had put forward a five-pillar plan aimed at addressing racist abuse in football.

The global governing body stated that it had engaged in an extensive consultation process with current and former players who are committed to instigating change.

One of the plan’s key suggestions involves implementing a standard crossed-hands gesture for players to signal racist incidents during matches.

The first pillar of the proposal intends to make racism a specific offence which is included in all member associations’ disciplinary codes and has its own “specific and severe sanctions, including match forfeits”.

Fifa said it will “pause, suspend and abandon games in cases of racism”.

The crossed-hands gesture will be used by referees to signal an in-game procedure in which matches are paused twice and warnings are given, with the game to then be abandoned in the event of further racism.

In pillar three – ‘criminal charges’ – Fifa called for racism to be recognised as a criminal offence in every country, and said it would push for severe sanctions in the countries where it is already an offence.

Fifa also said it would promote education initiatives with schools and governments to “provide a future free of racism”, while an anti-racism panel made up of former players will be set up to review the progress of the proposal.

In 2023, a FIFA report found almost 20,000 abusive social media posts were aimed at players, coaches and officials during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

And in 2021, England manager Gareth Southgate called the racist abuse aimed at Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka after the Euro 2020 final “unforgivable”.

  • It’s obviously tough, but I’m embracing it – Semenyo on life at Man City

It’s obviously tough, but I’m embracing it – Semenyo on life at Man City

Ghana international Antoine Semenyo has been phenomenal since he joined Man City in early January. Following his side’s 1-0 win against Leeds on Saturday, February at Elland Road.

Given his strong start since joining Man City, many believed he had settled in easily and adapted to all play styles, among other things; however, the Ghanaian-British has explained that adjusting to his new surroundings and role has been challenging.

“It’s a lot, you dream to play at this level. It’s obviously tough, but I’m embracing it. It’s pretty different, I’m usually just a wide man, but I’m adapting, and I’m just doing whatever I can for the team,” he added while speaking in his post‑match interview.

Semenyo notched the winner for Man City after his composed finish of Rayan Aït‑Nouri’s low cross in the 45+2 minute (first‑half stoppage time).

Reflecting on the match, Semenyo described the goal as a milestone in his City career.

“Definitely [my most important goal for City]. Every game is important, happy for the win, but still a lot of games to go, so we just need to keep going. All we can do is win our games,” he said.

The 26-year-old now boasts 14 goals and four assists from 27 Premier League appearances this season.

In the Premier League, he has made 27 appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing 4 assists, showing his consistency in England’s top flight. In the FA Cup, he has played 2 matches, contributing 1 goal and 1 assist, while in the EFL Cup, he has appeared 3 times and scored once.

Altogether, across all competitions, Semenyo has played 32 matches, delivering 17 goals and 5 assists. This tally highlights his strong impact in a relatively short time, underlining both his adaptability and importance to City’s attack.

He will look to extend his impressive form when Manchester City host Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

Before his move to Man City, he had attracted the attention of several European clubs, including Manchester United, Liverpool, and Real Madrid. However, little to no news emerged about his move to Man City, and he eventually completed the switch.

Addressing these links during an interview with Sky Sports, which aired on October 30, Semenyo said he had seen the reports but denied the purported links, adding that he was enjoying his stay at Bournemouth.

“I don’t think about it too much,” he said. “I try to stay present as much as I can. You see the news all the time; I see it as well. I’m not oblivious, but I try to keep focused. I’m enjoying my football here. If I’m not scoring goals, all of that goes away. I try to stay present, do the best I can for the team, score goals, and whatever happens in the future happens.”

Semenyo explained that he was convinced to stay after being encouraged by the club’s vision and summer recruitment.

“When they all left in the summer, there was a lot of interest and back and forth with the club. But I knew in my head that the manager had something up his sleeve this year.

“How we finished off the season last year was so good, and we could continue, especially with the players we’ve brought in as well. I wasn’t too sure at the start, but we’ve kicked on like a house on fire. I’m glad I committed to staying here because I’m enjoying every moment,” he added.

With his impressive form at his new club, Ghana’s former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye says he is hopeful that Semenyo can replicate his club form for the Black Stars as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches.

Speaking during an interview with Citi Sports on Thursday, February 5, the National Coordinator for the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) stated that the striker still has more to prove in national colours.

“I would just pray that he’s able to transfer whatever he’s doing with Manchester City to the Black Stars… up to now, he’s not been able to convince Ghanaians so much about his prolific performance when it comes to the Black Stars.”

Since making his Ghana debut in 2022, Semenyo has featured at the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 AFCON, earning 32 caps and scoring three goals.

He continued that Semenyo’s roots in England could be a big motivation for him to outdo himself during England’s game with Ghana Black Stars.

“You know he was born in England, and I think it is good… that is enough motivation for him to perform better when he plays the English,” he added

With the World Cup drawing closer, attention is steadily turning to Semenyo and his Black Stars teammates as Ghana looks to make a strong impression on the global stage.

In a related development, Ghana’s head coach Otto Addo is expected to release the final squad list for the 2026 World Cup in June next year.

This was confirmed by the Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, in an interview with Accra-based radio station Asempa FM on December 15. He stated that ahead of the official squad announcement, a provisional list is expected to be released by all qualified nations on May 11, with the final squad to be released on June 1.

“All qualified teams, including the Black Stars of Ghana, are mandated by FIFA to announce their provisional squad on April 11, 2026. The final squads for the tournament must be announced before midnight on June 1, 2026,” he said.

He added that Ghanaian players performing well domestically or abroad will all be considered for selection.

“Every Ghanaian player with a strong performance is closely monitored by the technical team, and regardless of where they play, they will be given a call-up,” Asante Twum noted.

Drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia, Ghana will be looking to improve on previous campaigns at the global tournament, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The Black Stars will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before facing England in Boston on June 23. Their final group match against Croatia is scheduled for June 27 in Philadelphia.

Next year’s tournament will mark Ghana’s fifth appearance at football’s biggest stage, having previously competed in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022. The team’s most memorable run came in 2010, when they reached the quarter-finals in South Africa.

Ghana’s World Cup campaign will begin against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, followed by a clash with England in Boston on June 23, before concluding the group stage against Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.

Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup represents its 5th appearance at the global tournament, having previously competed in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022. The Black Stars’ most memorable run came in 2010, when they reached the quarter-finals in South Africa.

They will open the tournament with a clash with Panama on 17 June, take on England on 23 June, and conclude the group stage against Croatia with their matches scheduled to be held in Toronto, Foxborough, and Philadelphia.

The Black Stars are set to play against England, Croatia, and Panama. This was revealed after the group draw was conducted on Friday at the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C, The high-profile ceremony attended by notable attendees, including President Donald, entertainers like Kevin Hart, Heidi Klum, and sports icons like Tom Brady, Shaquille O’Neal, Rio Ferdinand and Ghana’s legendary footballer, Asamoah Gyan.

Speaking during a media engagement, the former Ghanaian footballer expressed optimism about the team’s chances in the group. He acknowledged that although it is a bit tricky, he is confident Ghana will make it through successfully.

Meanwhile, Sports Minister, Kofi Adams, has announced a new twist in supporters’ sponsorship by the government for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana sealed their place at the 2026 World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Comoros in their final Group I qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12, marking the country’s fifth appearance at football’s biggest tournament, which will be hosted in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Past governments have mostly offered some form of financial support, be it full or partial, for supporters who travel to attend the World Cup. However, it has become a challenge over the years due to financial constraints.

Consequently, in early November last year, Kofi Adams noted that, although it has been a long-standing practice, he “doesn’t recommend” it.

However, in a recent radio interview on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show in Accra on February 5, he acknowledged the tradition of sponsoring fans to support the Black Stars, adding that it is for that reason that his outfit has set up a fundraising committee.

“The policy that we should take for fans is clear. It is clear that we should work at it, and that is why we have set up a fundraising committee. The number we would take ultimately will depend on how much we raise,” he stated.

He explained that the government seeks to sponsor some Ghanaian fans for the 2026 World Cup so Ghana will have strong support at the tournament.

  • Semenyo named favourite to replace Salah if he exits Anfield

Semenyo named favourite to replace Salah if he exits Anfield

Ghana international,  Antoine Semenyo, has been named a favourite by former England legend, Michael Owen, to replace ‘Egyptian King’, Mohammed Salah, if he bids farewell to Liverpool in the next transfer window.

Salah’s recent rants about his sideline by the club’s manager, Arne Slot and his allegations that “Someone doesn’t want me in the club” have sparked speculations about his future at Anfield.

Following Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road, which marked the third consecutive  Premier League match that Salah was benched, Mohamed Salah gave an explosive interview on Saturday, 6 December, where he accused the club of “throwing me under the bus” and declared that his relationship with head coach Arne Slot was “broken”.

Another case, which intensified speculations of his possible exit, was when he was left out of the squad entirely. Salah is also set to join Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday, with his absence potentially extending into January, fuelling speculation about a possible mid-season departure.

Consequently, Michael Owen believes Bournemouth’s Semenyo is a good fit after Salah bids goodbye.

He praised Semenyo’s rapid development at Bournemouth, noting his six Premier League goals this season and growing impact on matches.

“He is a brilliant player,” Owen said. “He scores goals – and we don’t know if Mohamed Salah will stay or leave, but if he leaves, Semenyo should be his replacement.”

The Egyptian forward, who has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, is also expected to miss the Reds’ upcoming Premier League clash with Brighton this weekend.

Semenyo says he pays little attention to transfer speculations highlighting his commitment and focus on his current club.

Following his impressive form this season, he attracted the attention of several European clubs according to reports. Those clubs include, Man Utd, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

However,  addressing these links, duing an interview with Sky Sports which was aired on October 30,  Antione mentioned that, he has seen the reports, but denied the purported links , saying he is enjoying his stay at Bournemouth.

“I don’t think about it too much,” he said. “I try to stay present as much as I can. You see the news all the time, I see it as well, I’m not oblivious, but I try to keep focused. Semenyo has scored six goals and provided three assists in just 10 Premier League matches. According to The Telegraph, AFC Bournemouth reportedly rejected £50 million offers from both clubs Man Utd and Spurs for Semenyo during the summer transfer window.

Antoine’s form has been consistent even during international games. Last season, he scored six goals in nine appearances and provided three assists. His only contender this season has been Man City’s Erling Haaland, who has a higher goal record ahead of Semenyo.

Despite interest from top clubs in Europe, he decided to stay at the Vitality Stadium, signing a new long-term contract that included a pay rise. His contract with Bournemouth’s expiry was set for 2026; however, in July, he extended his contract until 2030.

Meanwhile, the Ghana international was recently subjected to racism during a clash on Friday, August 15, against Liverpool.

During the first half of the Premier League opener, Semenyo was preparing to take a throw-in when a 47-year-old man passed some offensive comment at him. According to reports, Semenyo asked that the man repeat what he said; he did and even threw a gum at him.

He immediately reported it to referee Anthony Taylor, who paused the match in the 28th minute. Subsequently, he was seen out of the stadium by the police and held in custody for a racially aggravated public order offence, according to the Merseyside Police on Monday.

He has, however, been granted bail on the following conditions that, not attend any regulated football match in the UK and be prohibited from going within one mile of any designated football stadium. A police investigation into the incident is ongoing.

In reaction to this, Gianni Infantino, in an official statement issued on Sunday, August 17, explained that the sport has zero tolerance for discrimination and any other abuse in any form, eulogising Antoine’s resilience and stunning display in the game despite the potential emotional distress.

“It is absolutely unacceptable to see the racist abuse aimed at AFC Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, which led to a stoppage of their Premier League match against Liverpool FC at Anfield last night.Football has no place for racism or any form of discrimination – Antoine’s courage and performance on the pitch, despite such adversity, is a powerful example of strength and dignity for players worldwide”, parts of the statement read.

The FIFA president also assured Semenyo of the governing body’s full support, citing the role of the Players’ Voice Panel, established in 2024 as part of FIFA’s five-pillar strategy against racism.

“The Players’ Voice Panel, established as part of the five pillars against racism adopted by FIFA Congress in 2024, will be in touch with Antoine and is monitoring these situations closely.

“We are committed to ensuring that players are respected and protected, and that competition organisers and law enforcement authorities take appropriate action.Everyone at FIFA, The Players’ Voice Panel and the whole football community stands firmly with Antoine…” Infantino added.

Antoine Semenyo still on Man Utd radar as club eye him in January move

Even though Ghana international Antoine Semenyo has stated that his focus is on his current club, AFC Bournemouth and not other clubs or links to them.

However, the new development surrounding his future with the English club is that Manchester United has emerged as the frontrunner to sign the Ghanaian prodigy.

In late October, The Telegraph reported that Bournemouth reportedly rejected £50 million offers from both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur for Semenyo during the summer transfer window.  However, the Old Trafford hierarchy appears to have not given up on the chase; they are back with hopes of signing Semnyo this winter, with suggestions that they could have an edge over rival clubs also pursuing the 25-year-old forward.

Semenyo’s impressive form has attracted interest from several clubs. Antoine’s form has been consistent even during international games. Last season, he scored six goals in nine appearances and provided three assists. His only contender this season has been Man City’s Erling Haaland, who has a higher goal record ahead of Semenyo.

The forward’s contract at Bournemouth includes a £65 million release clause, which has further fueled transfer talk. Semenyo signed a new deal over the summer with the clause in place.

Manchester United could offer Semenyo the No. 9 shirt, left vacant following Rasmus Hojlund’s loan move to Napoli. However, he remains a target for other top clubs, including struggling Liverpool, and Arsenal are reportedly monitoring his situation.

Semenyo missed Bournemouth’s 2-2 draw with West Ham due to injury, but is expected to return for their upcoming match against Sunderland.

Addressing these links, during an interview with Sky Sports, which was aired on October 30,  Antione mentioned that he has seen the reports, but denied the purported links, saying he is enjoying his stay at Bournemouth.

In an interview with Sky Sports aired on 4th November, Semenyo revealed his ambitious goal target for the season in the Premier League.

During an interview with Sky Sports, he revealed that, each campaign, he writes a goal target he seeks to achieve by year’s end. This year, he wants to attain 15 goals, having notched 11 Premier League goals last year and eight in the previous year (2023). Antoine highlighted his commitment to constant self-improvement.

“Every year, I write my goals, what I want to achieve.“I always want to do better than what I’ve done in previous seasons. I set a challenge for myself this year, and I really want to push myself. I think I am a good finisher. Fifteen goals would be great,” he told Sky Sports.

He continued, “I can help the team in many ways, and credit to the manager [Andoni Iraola] and all the players, they’ve been so helpful”.

Despite interest from top clubs in Europe, he decided to stay at the Vitality Stadium, signing a new long-term contract that included a pay rise. His contract with Bournemouth’s expiry was set for 2026; however, in July, he extended his contract until 2030.

Liverpool responded quickly, with Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah finding the net to secure a 4-2 victory for the hosts in the 88th and 90+4th minute (stoppage time).

Reflecting on Semenyo’s performance, McManaman expressed admiration and noted that Liverpool missed out on signing him.

“Antoine Semenyo ran 50 yards to score that goal after signing a long-term contract,” he said on Premier League Production.

“He is strong and built for the Premier League, and anytime he has the ball, he looks dangerous going forward. For me, he should be playing for clubs like Liverpool. Throughout this summer, he was linked to Liverpool until Mohamed Salah extended his contract,” McManaman added.

Semenyo later expressed his gratitude to the football fraternity for their support following the racist attack.

He posted, “Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever – not because of one person’s words, but because of how the entire football family stood together… Football showed its best side when it mattered most.

Premier League club Bournemouth has not given up on their mission to sign Bristol City striker Antoine Semenyo in the ongoing winter transfer window.

Bournemouth’s second offer of £8m + £2m in add-ons for striker Antoine Semnyo was rejected by Bristol City last week.

According to an article in The Sun Bournemouth was prepared to pay the Bristol City striker £50,000-a-week to join.

However, the offer fell short of Bristol City’s valuation according to reports in England.

With four goals in his last five games, Semenyo has been in superb form for the Robins lately. With eight goals and 11 assists in 20 games, the 23-year-old is playing at the same levels he routinely showed throughout the second half of the previous season despite missing the whole preseason due to injury.

After the club activated the year option in December, he has just under 18 months left on his contract.

Last week City’s coach Nigel Pearson praised Antoine Semenyo’s professionalism in the midst of endless reports linking him to other clubs.

The head coach of Bristol City FC, Nigel Pearson has commended Black Stars striker Antoine Semenyo for his professionalism in the face of endless transfer speculation linking him to several clubs.

Nigel Pearson stated this after Bristol City’s 1-1 tie with Blackburn Rovers in the English Championship; Bristol City is ranked 17th out of the 24 teams in the league.

Semenyo scored for Bristol against Blackburn, his third goal in three games this year. Nigel Pearson ahead of the game against Blackburn Rovers confirmed the Robins have received bids from Premier League side Bournemouth and Burnley.

Bournemouth’s second bid for the talented striker was rejected by Bristol City.

“He’s done very well with speculations surrounding his future very well. He’s been able to go out there and play at full tilt and I think that’s testament to who he is and what he is, is a good player,” Pearson said.

Antoine Semenyo’s current market value is 3.2 million euros and his contract with Bristol City runs till 30th June 2023.

Pearson confirms Bristol City received an offer from Burnley for Antoine Semenyo

Burnley, who are now leading the Championship league, made an offer for star striker Antoine Semenyo, according to Bristol City coach Nigel Pearson.

A number of teams are keeping an eye on Antoine Semenyo of Bristol City as the January transfer window is about to close.

Burnley expressed interest in Semenyo earlier this month, and Vincent Kompany’s need for another striker pushed them to submit a proposal earlier in the transfer window; however, their offer was also rejected.

In his last four games, Semenyo has contributed to one goal and three goals for the Robins.

“We’ve received offers of a fashion from Bournemouth and Burnley too. And there is speculation about other clubs. It can be potentially very unsettling for players and that’s why I very much believe in being as frank and open as possible,” Pearson said.

“Antoine is a young man who’s had a pretty good couple of years now, on a personal level in terms of breaking into the side and showing not just potential but his ability to perform at a very good level. The one thing he’s working harder to do now is scoring more goals and, like many forwards, he’ll go through spells of achieving that but even when he’s not doing that he’s still a real handful,”

“We know we’ve got a talent in Antoine at the club but we need to protect our interests as a football club and if we get to a point where a deal is accepted that it’s done in the right way. Until that point, Antoine is our player,”

“What I would say about him is he’s a really honest player, honest person and he’s dealing with it as well as he can but speculation can be unsettling.”

  • Bristol City pleads with Ghana FA over Antoine Semenyo role in Black Stars

Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson has urged the Ghana FA to be compassionate with game time for recovering Antoine Semenyo‘s involvement in the international friendly double-header against Brazil and Nicaragua this month.

The City gaffer wants the Ghanaian gaffer Otto Addo to ease him slowly into the team as he yet to recover fully from an injury which has seen him make substitute appearances.

Pearson fears any rush could further exacerbate the situation of the Ghana striker due to the nature of his injury.

The 22-year-old has scored three times in his four appearances from the substitute bench for City since he made an injury return.

“Hopefully the Ghanaian FA will be sympathetic to our requirements and the player’s requirements because I think Chris (Hughton, Ghana technical advisor) would like him fit for the World Cup and obviously Antoine wants to be available both for us and the national side so common sense should prevail.

“The World Cup is still a few months away which is continued recovery time so by the time he gets to that point, hopefully, we’re not thinking by the same terms.”

Ghana will have one more warm-up game against Switzerland in November before their tournament gets underway against Portugal.

They then play South Korea and Uruguay before determining whether they have progressed into the knockouts.
