Akufo-Addo urges Ghana, Ivory Coast to brace themselves for the new cocoa prices

President Nana Akufo-Addo has called on regulators of the cocoa sector in Ghana and neighbouring Ivory Coast to “devise new strategies” to cope with volatile global prices.

Cocoa prices have seen a major rally this year to all-time highs on supply concerns.

Due to limited supplies, global cocoa grinders are paying up in the cash market to secure cocoa supplies this year, with concerns that West African cocoa suppliers may default on supply contracts, according to Barchart.

Speaking at the inauguration of the permanent headquarters for the Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative (CIGCI) in Accra, President Akufo-Addo said the current peak in cocoa futures “necessitates a revision of the initial approach to sustain or prevent a decline in prices.”

“This underscores the importance of this organisation for the two countries to devise new strategies to address the evolving market dynamics,” the president stated.

The two West African nations, which produce about 65 percent of the world’s cocoa beans, established the CIGCI in 2019 to exert more control over pricing and supply chains long dominated by international traders and processors.

A key early move was the introduction of a Living Income Differential (LID) premium of US$400 per metric tonne paid to local farmers on top of the market price starting in the 2020–2021 crop season. “What was thought of as impossible only two years ago is happening now,” Akufo-Addo said of the LID, which guarantees higher incomes for impoverished cocoa growers.

However, he warned that, with cocoa futures trading at record highs, revisions may be needed “to sustain or prevent a decline in prices.”

Last Thursday, cocoa prices surged once again, fueled by resilient global demand and mounting concerns over potential delivery defaults by West African suppliers grappling with a supply shortage.

According to Bloomberg, the Ghana Cocoa Board is in talks to delay the shipment of 150,000 to 250,000 metric tonnes to the next season due to a scarcity of beans. This supply crunch stems from a production decline in Ivory Coast, the top cocoa grower, where the 2023–2024 harvest is forecast to be 21.5 percent lower than the previous year, hitting an eight-year low of just 1.75 million metric tonnes.

Cocoa prices have experienced a significant rally since the start of the year, driven by the most severe supply shortfall in 40 years. The reduced production in Ivory Coast continues to exert upward pressure on prices.

The cocoa initiative between Ghana and Ivory Coast emerged from the leaders’ strategic partnership launched in 2017, aiming to enhance sustainability and efficiency within the industry.

In his speech, President Akufo-Addo recalled signing that initial deal with his Ivorian counterpart “when I came into office” and hailed the CIGCI headquarters as representing the countries’ “shared aspiration for a prosperous cocoa economy.”

The President said the new building symbolises “what regional unity and cooperation can achieve” and represents “the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the African cocoa industry.”

He expressed confidence that the joint body will “pioneer the way forward” by addressing pricing instability, farmer incomes and supply chain control.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted the need for the CIGCI to establish “unified positions,” especially regarding new European Union regulations governing sustainability and supplies of cocoa entering the crucial export market. “Collaborative efforts between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire are essential to safeguarding the interests of our farmers,” he stated, adding that “it is imperative for this collaboration to proactively address these challenges, reinforcing the need for cohesive action.”

Ghana, in particular, is seeing the economic impacts of its cocoa policy reforms, the president said.

Its installed processing capacity has risen above 50 percent of national output, while the total value of exported secondary products now averages above US$800 million per year.

“We will continue to work with the government of Côte d’Ivoire, united in our quest for sustainable and prosperous cocoa sectors in our two countries,” Mr. Akufo-Addo concluded.

  • Ayeh-Paye backs govt, ECG’s excuse that there is no ‘dumsor’

Ayeh-Paye backs govt, ECG’s excuse that there is no ‘dumsor’

Despite the incessant power outages disrupting homes and businesses across Ghana, former Member of Parliament for Ayensuano, Samuel Ayeh-Paye, maintains that the country is not in the throes of the dreaded ‘dumsor’ era, marked by severe power crises.

Ayeh-Paye’s assertion comes amidst widespread calls from affected sectors for the government to issue a load-shedding timetable to manage the erratic power supply situation.

Echoing Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s stance from last month, Ayeh-Paye denies the existence of ‘dumsor’ and challenges advocates of load-shedding to provide their own timetables.

According to Ayeh-Paye, Ghana currently possesses sufficient installed capacity to meet power demand, but technical challenges are hindering the full utilisation of that capacity.

“We are having some power outages and according to the power agencies, they are saying that there is no ‘dumsor’ but technical challenges. ‘Dumsor’ happens when you don’t have enough power to produce or supply the exact peak demand that we need,” he explained.

“As we speak, our peak production is around 3,600 megawatts, and what we get is a little below that and we have a shortfall, and what they [the power agencies] are saying is that the shortfall is not as a result of not having an installed capacity. The calculation is having about 5,000 plus installed capacity.”

Ayeh-Paye further dismissed suggestions that the outages are due to financial constraints in procuring fuel for power plants or paying independent power producers.

He stated, “What the [Energy] Ministry is telling us is that the issue is not about us not having money to buy fuel, the issue is about some of the plants being under maintenance and repairs and the ECG is also telling us that they have challenges with their transformers.”

Despite the assurances, the intermittent disruptions have sparked concerns among businesses and residents who experienced the crippling ‘dumsor’ crisis between 2012 and 2016.

Nonsense! A nation without leadership – Prophet Kofi Oduro fumes over ‘dumsor’

Prophet Kofi Oduro of Alabaster International Ministry has strongly criticised the government for the ongoing power outages, commonly known as dumsor, across the country.

Amid widespread complaints from Ghanaians about the outages, coupled with the government’s reluctance to acknowledge them as load-shedding, frustration has mounted.

Many are particularly upset by the Electricity Company of Ghana’s refusal to provide a load-shedding timetable.

During a recent sermon, Prophet Kofi Oduro attributed the current situation to poor leadership and financial mismanagement.

“Today, I slept outside, in my house, on three chairs combined. You can’t sleep because you are living in a nation that has no leadership; we voted for them, we’ve given them free food, free water, free fuel, free electricity, free everything, we have given them a salary and we have asked them to fix our issues.

“Ghana, you are crippled, you are blind, and your leaders are blind and dumb dogs who cannot speak and cannot perform. You are 67 and you are struggling with common electricity.

“Electricity is a common amenity; what is happening is not a lack of supply; it is a money issue and if it is a money issue, it is mismanagement.

This electricity issue is revealing how flawed our leadership is. Flawed leadership, I don’t care about your parties or who is in office,” he stressed.

“Hope must be restored; we are praying for you and speaking positively that things will get well, When lights go off and we are in the heat, your generator starts automatically, What kind of nonsense is this?” he asked.

Nothing shows Bawumia can win 2024 elections -Kwesi Pratt

Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. cast doubt on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s chances in the 2024 elections as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Nana Akomea, a member of Bawumia’s campaign team, dismissed Pratt’s scepticism during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on April 19, 2024.

Akomea challenged Pratt’s beliefs about Bawumia’s electoral prospects, citing the vice president’s leadership role in the campaign and his own confidence in Bawumia’s abilities.

Pratt, however, maintained his doubts, citing a lack of evidence supporting Bawumia’s potential victory.

Read an excerpt of their conversation below

Nana Akomea: Kwesi, don’t you believe that Bawumia can win the elections?

    Kwesi: I haven’t said that.

Nana Akomea: But don’t you believe?

Kwesi: Do you believe it yourself?

Nana Akomea: If not, why would I be working for him?

Kwesi: What work are you doing?

Nana Akomea: The work that I am doing for Bawumia. I am working as a national campaign vice chairman.

Kwesi: Okay, but people become campaign chairman and still fail.

Nana Akomea: Failure is different from belief, Kwesi. For me, I believe that he can win. That doesn’t mean that I am the only person that votes. But for you, don’t you believe that he can win?

Kwesi: I haven’t seen anything that shows that he can win. There is nothing that I have seen that indicates or shows that he can win.

National Cathedral: Otumfuo solely built Jubilee Hall; Akufo-Addo used public fund to dig expensive hole – A Plus

Entertainment personality turned politician, Kwame Obeng Asare, also known as A Plus, commended Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for spearheading a remarkable infrastructural project in his jurisdiction.

A Plus expressed admiration for the Asantehene’s initiative in solely funding the impressive construction endeavour, which promises to bolster economic development in the region.

However, A Plus criticised the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for its perceived failure to complete the National Cathedral project despite seeking financial contributions from the public.

During an appearance on United Showbiz on UTV, A Plus voiced his discontent with the state of the National Cathedral project and accused the government of undermining the trust of Ghanaians.

“Look at what Otumfuo alone has built [Jubilee Hall]… Due to bad mindset, we have invested money in digging the biggest hole in the world with the National Cathedral project. Aren’t they [politicians] ashamed when they see the building? They have taken huge sums of money from the public to build the cathedral, but they haven’t yet been able to. Look at what Otumfuo alone has done.

“This sends a signal to the government that the cathedral project has not been taken seriously. We are hoping that very soon it [Otumfuo’s Jubilee Hall] will be opened for public access. I’m happy with the fact that Otumfuo funded this project,” he told the show host, MzGee.

Liverpool set to make a £150 million bid for Kudus

Rumors have surfaced suggesting that Liverpool is considering a significant summer transfer move for West Ham United’s Mohammed Kudus, with talks of a staggering £150 million deal in progress.

Kudus, who joined West Ham just eight months ago from Ajax, has reportedly attracted Liverpool’s attention with his impressive performances for the Hammers.

Since his arrival, he has made a notable impact, particularly under the guidance of West Ham manager David Moyes, contributing 13 goals across all competitions.

While Kudus’s potential transfer to Liverpool would undoubtedly be a blow to West Ham, it highlights his suitability for the Premier League and his aspirations to compete at the highest level of European football.

The speculation gains further traction with reports suggesting that Liverpool views Kudus as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, amid rumors of Salah’s move to the Saudi Pro League for a staggering £150 million fee.

Although West Ham is keen to retain Kudus, the allure of joining a prestigious club like Liverpool may prove too tempting.

There is no sugar in infant formulas in Ghana – Nestle

Nestle Ghana Limited says it does not add sugars (sucrose and glucose) to infant formulas for children in the country.

“Like everywhere in the world, in Ghana, we do not add sugars (sucrose and glucose) to infant formulas for children aged 0–12 months.

“In Ghana, all our growing-up milks have no added sugars except NIDO1+, to which we add honey, in compliance with strict international and local regulations,” the company said in a press release.

It is in response to criticisms that the company was adding sugar to its baby food in some countries, according to an analysis by an organisation, that campaigns for the observance of human rights by Swiss-based companies.

The release said Baby Food and Infant Formula were highly regulated categories and that Nestle applied the same nutrition, health, and wellness principles everywhere in the world, aligned with both international and local guidelines and regulations.

“This includes compliance with labelling requirements and thresholds on carbohydrate content that encompasses sugars.”

It said that regarding cereals, there may be slight variations in recipes around the world.

“In Europe, Nestlé’s range of cereals comes with and without added sugars.

“Our milks and cereals for young children are fortified with vitamins and minerals such as iron to help tackle malnutrition in Central and West Africa,” it said.

Bawumia supporters refute statement warning Ken Agyapong for supposed backing of Alan

President of Bawumia Must Win (BMW), a pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) group, David Gyasi Boako, has refuted the authenticity of a letter circulating on social media.

The purported letter, allegedly from BMW, purportedly criticises Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, for his apparent backing of Alan Kyerematen, an independent presidential candidate in the upcoming 2024 elections.

“I have seen the statement, and I was shocked about the contents, so I called my secretary, Sir Obama, to confirm if he had written anything of that nature.

When I called him, he was surprised and asked for those behind such false information because this is the sixth time something of this nature has happened,” he said in an interview on Oman FM on April 19, 2024.

The now-discredited statement accused Kennedy Agyapong of undermining the NPP by supporting the activities of Alan Kyerematen, who had resigned from the party to contest as an independent candidate.

It criticised Agyapong’s media outlets for broadcasting an event where Kyerematen and other political groups gathered to form an alliance, labelling it a betrayal to the NPP and its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The statement called on the NPP National Executives to ensure that party resources were not used to promote Kyerematen’s activities and urged them to call Agyapong and others aligned with the Movement for Change to order.

However, Gyasi Boako denied the authenticity of the letter, stating, “We want to plead with the public that we have no idea about the said letter, and we haven’t written any letter. We are aware that Dr. Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong are living peacefully.”

Dumsor is here, but they don’t care! – Netizens furious at ECG, call for timetable

Many online users have taken to social media to express their frustration and demand urgent action from the government regarding the ongoing power outages (dumsor) plaguing the country.

The prolonged and unpredictable power cuts, commonly referred to as ‘dumsor,’ have persisted for several months, prompting widespread concern among citizens.

Despite assurances from the government, communicated through the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), that the issues causing the power cuts have been resolved, many areas continue to experience disruptions in power supply.

The ECG’s statement on March 29, 2024, insisted that any power outages were due to localised faults rather than a widespread return of ‘dumsor.’

However, the situation has not improved for many affected individuals and communities since the issuance of the ECG’s statement.

In recent online discussions, numerous users have shared their experiences of the adverse effects of the power cuts, particularly concerning the discomfort and challenges faced, especially by young children, during hot nights without electricity.

Umaru Sanda Amadu, a multimedia journalist at Citi FM and Citi TV, for instance, tweeted, “I can hear people’s children crying from nearby homes. Mine are sweating but not crying yet. They’re sweating because the power is off again, and the government officials we pay to fix it can’t be bothered! Sad State. #Dumsor is here, but they don’t care.”

Another user, @niilexis, described how some of his neighbours had to eventually turn on their cars to allow their newborns to enjoy some air-conditioning.

“Two neighbours had to put their cars on so their newly-born babies could escape the heat and have some relief to sleep. It’s 2024; this shouldn’t be how we live our lives,” he tweeted.

A young lady who said she nearly lost her job because of this situation wrote, “I nearly cried yesterday. Light off from 7am to 6pm, came back for only 15mins. Yes 15mins, and off again till this morning. All gadgets went off, missed meetings, no calls. Nearly lost my job.”

Gary Al-Smith of the Multimedia Group had this to say:

“Heartbreaking to see dumsor back with this kind of vengeance. For those of us with little kids, it’s a chastening experience that should not be suffered.”

A mother, @OyooQuartey, shared a photo of how she cared for her daughter in the heat, with the caption:

“This was us two nights ago in this dumsor. I made a cold compress to cool her down in the intolerable heat. 1am to 2am before I slept in the couch by the open window. I almost wept with exhaustion. Isn’t there any protest coming up?”

NSS Metric App removes 14,000 ghost names from system – Secretariat

Armstrong Esaah, Head of Corporate Affairs at the National Service Secretariat (NSS), has commended the organization’s implementation of the NSS Metric App, an online registration system designed to streamline the registration process for prospective service personnel.

He emphasized that since its inception, the app has successfully eliminated over 14,000 ghost names and has greatly simplified the registration process.

Gone are the days when individuals had to endure long queues at NSS district offices. Esaah highlighted the app’s robust security features, including artificial intelligence, which have effectively prevented impersonation attempts and saved the Ghanaian government millions of cedis.

The NSS Metric App was launched during the 2021–2022 service year with the primary objective of expediting the national service registration process and improving the detection of impersonation attempts.

As part of the registration process, individuals are required to complete an NSS form online and then visit district offices, where the app is utilized to scan their faces and match them with their Ghana cards for authentication and validation.

Armstrong Esaah, speaking on Onua FM’s Etifi Nsem Show on Saturday, April 20, praised the Executive Director of the Scheme, Osei Assibey Antwi, and the management for implementing various initiatives at NSS.

He highlighted that Ghana was on the brink of disbursing over GHC112 million in allowances to unqualified individuals three years ago, but the timely intervention of the Metric App by the management averted the situation.

”Without this app, these people would have gone through registration and paid a monthly service allowance, though they may not exist. They were blocked so they could not get the chance to even enter and get registered, he reiterated.

During his conversation with Ekow J.B., Mr. Esaah emphasized the continued robustness and improvement of the NSS Metric App, ensuring that the registration process remains transparent and equitable.

He also mentioned the NSS management’s preparation of partnership agreements to facilitate the deployment of personnel to foreign countries for their national service—a plan he described as ambitious.

Additionally, he expressed hope that the Parliament of Ghana would promptly pass the NSS policy for 2024–2034, which includes a thorough review of the National Service Scheme’s operations.

Localised fault – ECG insist on a stable national power supply amid ‘dumsor’

Amidst widespread frustration and calls for transparency from the government regarding the recent unexplained power disruptions across Ghana, a statement from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), issued on March 29, 2024, has resurfaced online.

In the statement, ECG clarified that the current power fluctuations are not indicative of a resurgence of “dumsor,” the term commonly used to describe erratic power supply in the country.

Instead, the ECG asserted that Ghana is experiencing a “stable national power supply” or a stable national grid.

Furthermore, the statement attributed any ongoing power outages post-dated March 29, 2024, to localised faults rather than systemic issues.

ECG also provided contact details for customers experiencing power-related challenges to seek assistance.

Despite these assurances, many individuals continue to grapple with the inconvenience of unannounced power interruptions, particularly during the evenings. Concerns have been raised, especially regarding the impact on children’s sleep patterns due to the disruptions.

For instance, Umaru Sanda Amadu, a multimedia journalist at Citi FM and Citi TV, tweeted, “I can hear people’s children crying from nearby homes. Mine are sweating but not crying yet. They’re sweating because the power is off again, and the government officials we pay to fix it can’t be bothered! Sad State. #Dumsor is here, but they don’t care.”

ECG has an independent agreement with IPPs for power supply – Kwadwo Poku

Energy expert and member of the NPP’s 2024 manifesto energy committee, Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku, has disclosed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has established agreements with independent power producers (IPPs) to supply power to its customers.

Consequently, he supports ECG’s stance against Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) regarding the publication of a load-management schedule.

GRIDCo, in a statement dated March 28, notified the sector minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, about ECG’s non-compliance with a load-management schedule issued by the systems manager.

“ECG had their own power purchase agreement within which they operate and they have arranged and signed off in agreement with these independent power producers (IPPs). If at any point in time these IPPs are generating far in excess of what you need for your concessionary area, then somebody calls you to tell you that you need maybe 2000 megawatts for your concessionary area.

The power purchase agreement you have signed with the IPPs are producing 3000, but you, that you only need 2000 of the 2000 that you signed agreement, manage load of let’s say 200 megawatts.

“ECG is saying that why should I manage the load because my contractual obligation is being met and I should be able to get power for my customers,” he explained on The Key Points on Saturday, April 20.

    Calls for dumsor timetable
Responding to concerns about ECG’s failure to release a load-shedding timetable despite the persistent erratic power supply, the NPP communicator asserted that ECG does not merely publish a load-shedding timetable.

He noted that a lot goes into the drawing of a load-management schedule.
Mr. Nsafoah cited the ECG’s statement, which noted that the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) gives ECG limited timelines in notifying it of generation shortfalls to their bulk supply points (BSPs), which results in dumsor.

He also dismissed the concerns that the power challenges in the country are largely due to a lack of money to purchase fuel.

  • Ameri plant relocation essential for grid stability and balance – Kwabena Donkor

Ameri plant relocation essential for grid stability and balance – Kwabena Donkor

Former Power Minister and NDC MP for Pru East, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, clarified that the relocation of the Ameri power plant isn’t aimed at boosting power generation but serves strategic purposes.

He highlighted that the move aids in grid stabilization and helps reduce transmission losses for GRIDCo.

Speaking on News File on April 20, he explained that back in 2014, the NDC government had intended to establish power generation facilities in the middle belt but faced fuel supply challenges.

“A gas pipeline had gotten to Prestea but there wasn’t a gas pipeline to Kumasi and therefore a physical relocation at that time would not have made sense without fuel.

Fortunately, unfortunately, the people of Ghana decided that we should leave the scene so there was a truncation of the process. Other than that, generation in the middle corridor would have happened earlier,” he said.

He noted that if not for this interruption, power generation in the middle corridor would have commenced earlier. Explaining the advantages, he emphasized that having generation in the middle corridor is beneficial.

Additionally, he highlighted GRIDCo’s indebtedness to the Volta River Authority (VRA) due to transmission losses surpassing approved limits by the PURC. Dr. Donkor emphasized that when generation is closer to the market, transmission losses are minimized.

“It also helps stabilize the grid. You see, there is a certain balance that the grid must have. If there is a situation where until now we have the Eastern and Western corridors in terms of generation and even then there is a delicate balance, you cannot over-generate from one corridor with nothing coming from the other. The grid will trip.”

“The initial inter-connected transmission system, there is a certain balance needed. So having generation in the central corridor will help that,” he said.

The NDC has largely raised concerns about the amount spent in relocating the plant, as well as the renaming of the plant despite the NPP’s initial opposition its acquisition while in opposition.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Mr Kpemka said that he could not believe it because the facts were concocted, stressing, “Because this was just not stealing, but naked thievery.”

“In one of the charges, the boss of MASLOC decided to give a loan to a rural bank and they did not even reach any agreement, yet the money was transferred to the rural bank. When the money got to the account of the rural bank, the people then asked what the interest rate was on the money you had sent to us.

“Imagine, something you should have done earlier was not done, then the interest rate was quoted by Sedina. When the interest rate was quoted, the rural bank management said, At the interest rate you’ve quoted, if we take this money, we cannot make any money out of it so we want to return it to you.”

Mr Kpemka emphasised that, as a matter of good corporate practice, the former CEO of MASLOC should have corresponded with the bank, providing her organisation’s account details for the rural bank to directly deposit the money into, thereby ensuring transparency and accountability through the production of receipts.

“You know what she said, she directed them to cash the money and bring it to Accra and then they cashed the money in a GhanaMustGo, carried it to Accra. They met at Baatsona Total filling station and the money was packed into her boot and she drove away,” he said.

The former deputy AG provided additional clarification regarding MASLOC’s intended nationwide sensitization workshops for specific groups, which were allocated approximately GH₵2 million. He revealed that less than five percent of this amount was actually used for its designated purpose, with the majority of the funds being distributed among other parties instead.

He also cited some instances where MASLOC misused some money, stating, “There was a fire disaster and some money was allocated to help the victims; just a small percentage of it was used; the rest was shared.

“There were some phones they had to buy; one on the market was GH₵100, and the price they quoted was GH₵400 each. Clearly, some vehicles were procured, in fact, those vehicles even delayed the trials because we had finished all the charges and then we bumped into a report that indicated that vehicles had been bought, some of them were thrice the market price, some were twice the market price, so we had to amend our charges and include all these.”

He maintained that the former MASLOC CEO was found guilty of all 78 charges, stating that it is one of the most “nauseating cases I have come across in legal prosecution.”

Mr. Kpemka emphasised that the brazen acts of “impunity, blatant theft, and corruption” committed by them were alarming.

During the court proceedings on April 16, 2024, both Sedina Attionu and Daniel Axim were convicted on 78 counts, including causing financial loss to the state, theft, conspiracy to steal, money laundering, and violating public procurement laws.

The trial of the two individuals has been ongoing since 2019. The prosecution presented six witnesses, while the primary accused, Sedina Tamakloe, was tried in absentia after fleeing to seek medical treatment abroad.

The second accused, who appeared in court, chose not to call any witnesses in their defence.

  • Let them pay the money back either in cash or properties – Vitus Azeem on MASLOC CEO case

Let them pay the money back either in cash or properties – Vitus Azeem on MASLOC CEO case

Anti-corruption advocate Vitus Azeem has called on the government to prioritize the recovery of embezzled state funds over the imprisonment of convicted individuals.

His statement follows the sentencing of former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu to 10 years in prison with hard labor for various acts of embezzlement.

Additionally, former MASLOC COO Daniel Axim received a five-year prison term with hard labor after being found guilty on 78 counts related to financial misconduct.

Azeem contends that the primary focus should be on retrieving the misappropriated funds rather than solely punishing the perpetrators.

He emphasized that if individuals are found culpable for causing financial losses to the state, the foremost action should be the restitution of the stolen funds.

“As for sending the person to jail, it should be a second factor. That is penalising the person for the crime. The state should be interested in getting the money back either in cash or properties acquired by the person in the years.”

“So for me, the priority should be recovering the money. Retrieving the money that has been illegally taken and then of course the person has committed a crime by illegally taking the money, you can now go ahead and jail the person,” he said.

According to Mr. Azeem, the investigation involving Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu and Daniel Axim should be a starting point because there are a lot of people involved in it.

“The investigation should go beyond these two personalities. There are people who collaborated, there are people who connived. There are people who condoned in this whole exercise and they should be brought to book.”

  • Oil prices see a 4% decline amid Israel-Iran tensions

Oil prices see a 4% decline amid Israel-Iran tensions

Crude oil prices experienced a notable weekly decline in the global commodity market, largely attributed to Israel’s retaliatory strikes against Iran.

This development, coupled with reports indicating the US Federal Reserve’s intention to maintain higher interest rates for an extended period, contributed to the downward trend.

Investor concerns were further fueled by economic data highlighting subdued demand in the US, the world’s largest oil consumer.

The recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East following Israel’s counterattacks on Iran added to market uncertainty, prompting a significant drop in oil prices.

ICE Brent crude saw a decline of 4.5% to $86.44 per barrel by Friday, compared to the previous week when it surpassed $90 per barrel. Similarly, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the American benchmark, traded at $82.12 per barrel, marking a 4.1% decrease from the previous week’s session.

The prospect of the Fed maintaining interest rates at current levels was underscored by statements from key officials.

New York Fed President John Williams emphasised the need for economic activity to guide rate adjustments, while Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic noted the gradual return of inflation to target levels.

Expectations for interest rate cuts by the Fed were tempered, with a 23% chance of reduction in June, increasing to 49% in July and 71% in September, as per market sentiment.

Meanwhile, data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) revealed a higher-than-expected increase in US commercial crude oil stocks, signalling weakened demand.

This, coupled with a rise in strategic petroleum reserves, further dampened market sentiment and contributed to the decline in oil prices.

Tensions between Iran and Israel heightened following retaliatory actions, although Iranian authorities downplayed the situation. Israel’s airstrikes on Iranian targets were met with Iranian missile launches, leading to concerns over the escalating conflict.

However, Iranian officials attributed the reported explosions in key cities to routine air defence activities, asserting the safety of military and nuclear facilities.

Vote them out! : Six economic atrocities of the NPP govt – Dr Kofi Amoah outlines

Renowned Ghanaian economist Dr Kofi Amoah has offered his perspective in response to the criticism leveled by Parliament’s Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, against the potential return of former President John Dramani Mahama.

During a press briefing held in parliament on April 19, 2024, Afenyo-Markin, also the Effutu Member of Parliament, raised doubts about Mahama’s capacity to introduce innovation and vision to Ghana.

He implied that Mahama’s re-election might lead to complacency and internal party discord.

However, Dr. Amoah took to social media on April 20, 2024, to counter these assertions, challenging the ruling party’s stance.

He underscored the current administration’s economic track record, citing issues such as fiscal insolvency, escalating debt, inflationary pressures, currency depreciation, surging unemployment rates, and pervasive corruption as grounds for the NPP government’s perceived failure and the necessity for a change in leadership in the upcoming 2024 general election.

“Listen to the insensitive arguments by the NPP to be allowed by the ‘Suffering Citizens’ of Ghana to remain in power.

“Here’s their record: Bankrupt economy, largest debt, highest inflation, worst cedi, highest joblessness, corruption. Vote them out pls,” he posted.

This exchange comes amid the ongoing debate over Ghana’s leadership and the direction of its economic policies as the nation approaches a crucial election in December 2024.

Bawumia has better reputation than Mahama in fight against corruption – Salam Mustapha

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has underscored the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s strong anti-corruption stance.

Mustapha argued that Dr. Bawumia’s track record in combating corruption surpasses that of John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He pointed to Dr. Bawumia’s clean reputation both as a technocrat and a politician, contrasting it with what he sees as a different scenario for Mahama.

Mustapha challenged anyone alleging corruption against Dr. Bawumia to provide evidence, highlighting the absence of such accusations against him.

These comments were made during an interview in the Ashanti Region as part of Mustapha’s National Youth Campaign tour.

The tour aims to engage the NPP Youth Wing in readiness for the upcoming limited voter registration exercise organized by the Electoral Commission.

Additionally, it seeks to rally the youth of the region to support the NPP government in their pursuit of the “break the 8 agenda.”

Jailed MASLOC boss collected GH¢500K loan refund in cash at filling station – Reports

New details have surfaced regarding the infractions that led to the imprisonment of Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, the former head of the Microfinance and Loans Centre (MASLOC).

Among these infractions was her decision to demand repayment of a loan issued to a company in cash rather than through a bank transfer to MASLOC’s account.

Former Deputy Attorney General Joseph Kpemka highlighted this particular violation while speaking on Citi FM’s The Big Issue programme, emphasising the challenges faced by defence lawyers from the outset.

He said: “If I were to be their lawyer at the beginning, I would have asked for us to do a plea bargain. Because it was very clear that they could not have escaped.

“If you look at some of the things, one of the charges is that you gave out a loan to someone even without discussing interest and when the money got to the person’s account, you mentioned interest.

“The person said I am no longer interested in the deal; therefore, I am sending it back to you. The best way is to send it back to an account, but in that particular case, you instructed them to bring the money back to Accra and they brought it in a sack.

At Baatsona Filling Station, the money was loaded into a car and driven away; I mean, how are you going to defend that?” he quizzed.

A review of the final ruling on the matter confirmed the breach, which was captured on pages 31 and 32.

  • It’s a plan to milk some insurance money and share – Capt. Smart to govt on train crash

It’s a plan to milk some insurance money and share – Capt. Smart to govt on train crash

Ghanaian media personality and host of the morning show ‘Maakye’ on Onua TV, Captain Smart, has alleged that the government intentionally left a truck on the railway tracks during a test run of two newly acquired diesel-powered trains from Poland, aimed at improving the country’s railway transport system.

He has raised concerns about the competence of the officials overseeing the locomotive test, questioning how they could have been unaware of the presence of the truck obstructing the path of the train. This oversight resulted in damage to the cabin area of the train.

His comments come after one of two trains acquired from Poland rammed into an abandoned Hyndai truck on the tracks of the railway lines.

    Train accident

He alleged that ” You see, they have announced they are going for insurance. Yes, they are going to take the money and share it among themselves .Its an old train and they deliberately left this thing there to take money for damages.

From nowhere, the truck driver decided to curve and land on the lines? In any case, those who were testing to check if the train lines were intact. Are they trying to tell us that they didn’t see the truck parked on the railway?

Locomotive test officers didn’t see this truck? They are aware; they know it was a deliberate thing.”

    Train-crashed into this truck

Capt. Smart also said that the two trains were gifted to the president. According to him, these are old trains that have been rebranded and gifted to Ghana, daring the government to present it’s receipts if the said trains were paid for.

“The government didn’t pay a dime for these trains; it was a gift to them. If it’s a lie, they should publish receipts.

These trains are old trains that have been repainted and branded,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railway Development, in its statement, addressed the incident as “unfortunate, irresponsible, and unpatriotic.” According to them that despite the immediate application of the emergency braking system, the train was unable to come to a complete stop before colliding with the vehicle.

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has boldly expressed the party’s confidence in launching rockets into space for the first time in Ghana.

Speaking on his radio station, Wontumi FM on April 19, the chairman stated that should the party’s current flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Bawumia, win the upcoming elections, the NPP plans to execute a space rocket launch before the end of his eight-year term.

“If Bawumia wins the presidential bid this year, we will announce our readiness to build rockets and make a maiden voyage into space,” he noted.

  • TUC warns Prof Adei away from all matters concerning the Union

TUC warns Prof Adei away from all matters concerning the Union

Trades Union Congress (TUC) has criticised Economist and professor Stephen Adei, asserting that he lacks a comprehensive understanding of the country’s industrial relations and the hardships encountered by workers.

This reaction comes in response to Prof. Adei’s assertion that Ghanaian workers exhibit low productivity compared to their global counterparts, suggesting that Togolese workers surpass Ghanaians in this aspect.

In a statement issued on Friday, April 19, the TUC emphasised that this was not the first instance of Prof. Adei targeting Ghanaian workers and undermining their contributions.

The TUC, along with organised labour, stated that they “will no longer sit down for you [Prof. Adei] to continue the unwarranted attacks on Ghanaian workers and their trade unions.”

“We are convinced that you are clueless about industrial relations and the challenges Ghanaian workers are grappling with. We will respond to any such attacks from you henceforth.”

The TUC pointed out that Prof. Adei had in the past reportedly called for the dismissal of all public basic schoolteachers, alleging without any evidence, that the “teachers are not teaching.”

“Two years ago, you reportedly urged the government to sack public sector workers who were only exercising their legal right to strike. You have now established yourself firmly as an anti-Ghanaian worker.”

The TUC also mentioned that in 2019, the professor claimed that 50% of public service workers are overpaid and that these workers do not deserve their salaries.

“In that interview, you falsely claimed, among other things, that the attitude of the Ghanaian worker remains one of the worst across the world. Again, in 2019, you advocated the removal of students and labour representatives from the governing councils of public universities.

And in December 2013, you rubbished the demand by doctors, pharmacists, lecturers, and senior staff of public universities and polytechnics for market premium, stating that they “must thank God [that they have] jobs and not market premium.”

The TUC expressed disappointment over the long list of Prof. Adei’s negative comments about Ghanaian workers and their unions.

“You are on a mission to discredit Ghanaian workers at the least opportunity. You have been deliberate and consistent in attacking workers and courting public disaffection for them. The working people of Ghana will not tolerate your attacks any longer.”

You need to fix the cedi! – COPEC urges govt amid fuel price hike

Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has called on the government to prioritise strengthening the Cedi to facilitate a decrease in the prices of petroleum products.

In recent weeks, petroleum product prices have experienced a significant decline, exacerbated by the reinstatement of the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy.

Duncan Amoah, Executive Secretary of COPEC, highlighted on The Big Issue on Citi FM and Citi TV that the surge in prices can be attributed to the depreciation of the currency.

He emphasised the importance of governmental strategies aimed at bolstering the Cedi’s value.

“What we can do as a country at this point is really to strategize on your currency and do whatever magic that has been done because before August 2022, prices of petroleum products did hike and at a point, diesel and petrol were crossing GH¢21 and for some reasons, we were able to cool those two off.

“The Cedi had also depreciated to almost GH¢17 exchange to a dollar, and the Bank of Ghana for whatever magic, was able to reverse the depreciation back to GH¢12 and so if you have any of those things down your sleeve, there could be no better time to apply that kind of solution than at this point when prices are simply going up daily.

“At this point, taxes cannot be taken, give or take; we cannot influence Israel on Iran; we cannot influence Ukraine from bombing Russian refineries. What we can do at this point is ensure that your Cedi is not doing too badly, as we have seen in the past few weeks.

“Once that happens, you are simply hanging yourself in the face of global market price trends and throwing your hands in despair.”

Ex-partner of Dele Alli shares harrowing experience of robbery attack on the Everton midfielder

Dele Alli’s former partner, Ruby Mae, has opened up about a harrowing experience when armed intruders robbed the Everton footballer.

Recounting the terrifying ordeal, Mae expressed her fear for her life as the assailants forcibly took jewellery from her hands and arms.

Speaking to The Sun, she detailed how two masked men barged into their bedroom, assaulted Dele, and demanded valuable watches.

Mae, who was watching Netflix at the time while Dele entertained friends downstairs, described the chilling moment when the intruders breached security measures, targeted their home, and fled with stolen jewellery.

Ruby Mae said: “They roughed up Dele and forced him upstairs with them into the wardrobe area, which is separated from the bedroom.

“I couldn’t see the door from the bed but Dele’s friend came up first. They came to me in a panic and I instantly realised something was wrong. His friend wouldn’t have usually come into the bedroom.

“Behind the friend, towards the door, was what looked like a silhouette. I was confused and said, ‘Dele?’ and the guy didn’t answer.

“I realised this guy was not the same height or body structure as Dele. He came over to me and was very intimidating.

“He started asking me where everything was while trying to take off my bracelets and rings.”

She added, “It was terrifying. I was just hoping for it all to be over and for us to be safe.”

Despite a prompt police response, the burglars managed to evade capture and remain at large. The incident occurred during the lockdown in 2020, and Dele is now on the verge of returning to fitness with Everton.

VIDEO: ‘You are the best; its a goal – Lip reader reveals CR7’s pep talk before free-kick

Cristiano Ronaldo (CR7) engaged in a motivating pep talk with himself before scoring a free-kick in Al Nassr’s dominant 8-0 victory over Abha, as revealed by a lip reader.

Renowned for his unwavering self-confidence, Ronaldo pumped himself up by affirming that he was “the best” and confidently declaring that “it was going to be a goal” as he prepared to take the free-kick earlier in April.

True to his words, Ronaldo executed a spectacular strike, contributing to his team’s resounding triumph.

According to Machado, Ronaldo said to himself, “You are the best. You know you’re the best and you’re going to score. It’s going to be a goal. It’s going to be a goal. You know it’s going to be a goal.”

In the absence of their star player, Sadio Mane, Al-Nassr secured a 3-1 victory against Al Feiha on Friday.

However, their chances of clinching the Saudi Pro League title this season appear slim, with league leaders Al-Hilal maintaining a nine-point lead with only six games remaining.

Despite this setback, Al-Nassr looks poised to secure a spot in the AFC Champions League, and Ronaldo seems destined to claim the golden boot.

Looking ahead, the Portuguese captain will aim to guide his country to a second European Championship title, marking his record-breaking sixth appearance in the Euros.

Sounds of joy, excitement as Nungua welcomes their ‘queen’ Naa Yomo after release – Report

Nungua, a suburb of Accra, buzzed with excitement as news spread of the release of Naa Yomo Ayemuade, the supposed bride of Gborbu Wulomo, who had been under police protection for weeks.

A video shared by TV3GH on X showed residents eagerly gathering at the entrance of Nungua town, accompanied by singing and drumming, adding to the lively atmosphere.

“Our queen is back,” they sang as they welcomed Naa Yomo Ayemuade with a procession.

The report also added that elders of the town afterwards ushered her into the shrine.

Gborbu Wulomo, the chief priest, who was accused of marrying the underage girl, was also spotted at the entrance of the shrine.

Meanwhile, the chief priest has remained quiet since the issue of his reported marriage to the minor unfolded.

    Background

The police intervened and took custody of the minor amid concerns regarding the legality of her alleged marriage. This action led to tension when members of the Nungua Traditional Council demanded her immediate release from the hotel where she was being held.

Despite these developments, the office of Gborbu Wulomo clarified that the relationship between Gborbu Wulomo and the 16-year-old girl, Naa Ayemoade, is customary and not a formal marriage.

During a press conference at the Gborbu Wulomo’s office, Spokesperson Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II, the Nungua Mankralo, acknowledged that while the customary arrangement involves an underage individual, it does not condone the initiation of a sexual relationship.

  • BBC’s full article on Ibrahim Mahama

BBC’s full article on Ibrahim Mahama

London’s grey and angular Barbican Centre is now a sea of pink – its frontage covered in cloth that billows in the breeze as if dancing.

“It started as a joke,” visual artist Ibrahim Mahama tells the BBC.

“When I was invited here, I was looking at the grey concrete and the grey weather. I thought, why not use something more colourful as a contrast?”

So the 37-year-old turned to local experts in northern Ghana near his studio in Tamale, who weaved and sewed this project on a colossal scale.

During three months, a team of 1,000 people hand-stitched 2,000 square metres of striped cotton, before decorating it with 130 traditional smocks known as batakari.

Purple Hibiscus is the result of that toil. It is also a nod to London’s famous rag trade – the city’s fabric merchants, tailors and dressmakers who once dominated the area where the Barbican Centre now stands.

Ghana too has its own long and rich history of textiles – perhaps best known for its bright, patterned kente cloth.

After independence from the UK in 1957, the state initially invested in the garment and cloth industries but they later went into decline because of economic turmoil and cheap Chinese imports.

Textiles have made a comeback in recent years – despite a struggling economy – and Ghanaian fabrics are desired for their high quality and interesting designs.

“I always say that doctors repair the body, but artists fill the body with the soul. And in any society, art is the soul that drives it – to evolve in a more conscious way,” says Mahama.

Community for him is key – his studio is open to visitors and he plans to open an art school for children.

Purple Hibiscus and Mahama’s other large-scale public art installations reference the power of collective labour and the memories that textiles contain.

Jute sacks – used to transport cocoa, rice and charcoal – were draped over the National Theatre in Accra, Ghana’s capital city. It was Mahama’s way of exploring the history of trade in commodities and globalisation.

His latest project at the Barbican showcases a typically Ghanaian item he has been collecting since 2012.

Batakari – also called smocks or binŋmah in Mahama’s Dagbani language – are tunics made from hand-woven strips of cotton then sewn together to create a distinctive striped pattern.

They originated in northern Ghana but are now worn throughout the country and the diaspora by men and women, on formal and informal occasions.

Some are passed down the generations – decades-old and unwashed – so “they contain the sweat, the economic struggles, the personal struggles, and the spirit of people”, says Mahama.

“I like decay quite a lot. When something is at that point of its life, I always think that is when it is beginning to live more.”

Among the batakari on show in Purple Hibiscus are those donated by old chiefs. Others came from ordinary families who would trade Mahama their old ones for a new one, and others still were specially commissioned.

Many bear yellowish stains of sweat – and in some cases, urine. Some families would not give Mahama their batakari until they had put urine on it because they believe that the family’s past, present and future is contained in the decades-old garment.

“They believe that when they do that, it somehow desacralises the material and then the soul will somehow escape away from it,” explains Mahama.

“As an artist, I think it’s even more interesting aesthetically.”

Mahama is in some ways more focused on the process and experience of creating art than the final product.

Crafting Purple Hibiscus was so big a task that the team worked in Tamale’s sports stadium, built for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations football tournament.

Bringing the textile creation over to London to drape on the Barbican’s post-World War Two brutalist forms was a feat that makes Mahama proud.

“I thought what could be more beautiful than creating this relationship between these two labour forms – one that is coming from a post-war era, and then one that is coming from the 21st Century but also steeped in traditions and histories of the pre-colonial era.”

Today it is an extraordinary sight, especially when a blue sky sets off the pink just so.

The billowing forms that batakari take when their wearers dance have always fascinated Mahama, who says they create a kind of optical effect.

It seems to me that, when the wind blows in a certain way, Purple Hibiscus is performing its own special dance.

Kuffour used my wife to get me to accept US ambassadorial job – Alan claims

Alan Kyerematen, Leader of the Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC), has provided details about how he was appointed as Ghana’s ambassador to the United States of America (USA) years back.

He disclosed that, despite being the first minister appointed by the erstwhile John Agyekum Kufuor administration, he initially declined the ministerial position, asserting his preference for a behind-the-scenes role in the administration.

“When he (Kufuor) became president, I was the first person he appointed a minister and I was bold to tell him that I don’t need your appointment.

“I was working with the UN before helping you to become president. Give it to those who are looking for posts so that we will sit back and watch and correct you when you go wrong,” onuaonline.com quoted him to have said in an interview on Onua FM on April 19, 2024.

Kyerematen served as Ambassador of Ghana to the United States of America from 2001 to 2003.

Kyerematen explained that President Kufuor, keenly aware of his capabilities, was determined to secure his services for the betterment of his administration.

“He then pleaded with me that if I didn’t want the ministerial position, I should take the role of the US Ambassador because if he didn’t get a competent person to hold that position, it would greatly affect his administration and he had to really plead through my wife and family before I accepted,” he disclosed

Alan Kyerematen the former ambassador, also served as Trade and Industry Minister under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration before pursuing his presidential dream under the banner of Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC) in the 2024 elections.

A police officer stationed at the Mankessim FPU Base in the Central Region is being hailed on social media for his heroic actions in saving over 30 school children and their teachers from a potential accident.

General Constable Stephen Kwasi Sintim’s quick thinking and bravery averted disaster at Atinga Junction on the Kumasi road on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

According to a post shared by popular socialite, content creator, and relationship expert Abena Manokekame, Constable Sintim was seated in his private vehicle when he noticed a long vehicle approaching the school bus.

Without hesitation, he sprang into action, stepping out of his car to intercept the potentially disastrous collision.

Not only did he prevent the long vehicle from crashing into the school bus, but he also took swift measures to block off the road, ensuring the safety of the children and their teachers.

In a remarkable display of dedication to duty, Constable Sintim then pursued the driver of the long vehicle, who attempted to flee the scene. Despite the driver’s attempt to evade capture, Constable Sintim managed to apprehend him, preventing any further potential harm.

The courageous actions of Constable Stephen Kwasi Sintim have sparked widespread praise on social media, with many users calling for recognition of his bravery.

Some have even gone as far as requesting that the Inspector General of Police consider promoting him for his exemplary service and commitment to public safety.

    Hello Aunty Abena,

A police officer who has been following your page did something incredible yesterday, and we want it to go viral.

The police officer named No. 63850 General Constable Stephen Kwasi Sintim of Mankessim FPU Base saved over 30 children in a school bus with their teachers and the driver.

The incident happened yesterday, Tuesday, April 16, 2024, around 03:45 pm at Atinga Junction not far from Ahodwo roundabout in the Ashanti Region.

The said police officer was in his private vehicle when he saw a red long vehicle with the number plate GT 8764-23 crashing into a white school bus of TBM ACADEMY with number plate GE 6331-14 because the road was too narrow.

The police officer immediately and professionally stopped the driver in the long vehicle and also blocked the road while he wasn’t on duty and not in uniform. In a hurry, he rushed onto the school bus and helped over 30 children get down including their teachers and driver.

Immediately they got down, the school bus nearly somersaulted, and when the bus landed on the ground, the car got damaged.

The long vehicle driver saw the scene and got scared of being jailed so he ran away but the police officer gave him a hot chase and arrested him together with his car and took him including the driver of the school bus to the nearest police station that’s Asokwa Divisional headquarters in Kumasi.

IGP needs to see this and reward this police officer General Constable Stephen Kwasi Sintim for his professional and Angelic work done. If not him the children would be unalive with their teachers by now.

God bless the police officer, God bless Ghana Police Service.

I don’t even have time to doctor videos – Opambour hits back at Owusu-Bempah

Rev. Ebenezer Adarkwa Yiadom, also known as Opambour, has responded to allegations made by Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah regarding tape doctoring.

Owusu-Bempah recently expressed frustration over the misrepresentation of his comments regarding Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential candidature.

He stated that edited versions of his remarks were circulating on social media platforms, portraying him as opposed to Bawumia’s presidential aspirations.

Identifying two individuals responsible for circulating the doctored videos, Owusu-Bempah mentioned a junior pastor of Opambour known as ‘Pastor Chief’ and a journalist with GHPage.

While clarifying that he has no personal issues with Opambour, Owusu-Bempah questioned why Opambour and his junior pastor would engage in activities that could damage his reputation.

    Opambour reacts

“You claim we have doctored your views amid other allegations. I haven’t even heard your views and I haven’t watched any videos, so go and find those that have done so.

“I actually refused to listen to your claims at all… Whatever God has told you is not my business. I don’t know who told you that (I have done anything) and I can’t explain why God told you so if He is your source of information.

“I don’t even have time to doctor someone’s views. I know nothing about it and have heard nothing about it. Chief hasn’t discussed anything with me let alone doctor whatever,” he stated in a video shared on Trends GH, a YouTube page.

Come and show us what you have done; I’ve my records – Alan ‘dares’ NPP

Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC), has issued a challenge to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who criticise him to provide evidence of their own accomplishments.

Defending his own track record, Kyerematen emphasized that his achievements speak for themselves and suggested that those who doubt his capabilities should demonstrate their own achievements.

Speaking in an interview on Onua FM on April 19, 2024, he stated, “Kufuor brought me back in 2003 to supervise the initiatives I started; these same NPP people were talking… and people started talking about how Kufuor brought me to groom me to become president.

“So, the animosity started a long time ago and I even took too long to exit the party because the animosity started long ago. Ask the NPP people making noise in Ghana: what are their records… Those of you talking—who were you at the time?

“I’ve traced my records; those of you talking, what have you done before? What are your records?” Kyerematen questioned.

The seasoned politician highlighted his early managerial success, stating, “My achievements started at USA, now Unilever, I was a manager at the age of 22 and that is a record at that time.

“I was in charge of UNDP, their programme that supported businessmen in the whole of Africa called Enterprise Africa. In politics, Kufuor knew my worth before we came to power.

“I would have contested him in 1996 because he knows my worth. When he became President, I was the first person he appointed a minister and I was bold to tell him that I don’t need your appointment, I was working with the UN already before helping you to become President,” he added.

Video: Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill – CNN journalist against Ghana’s finance minister

CNN’s Richard Quest confronted Mohammed Amin Adam, the Minister of Finance, about Ghana’s recently passed anti-LGBT+ bill during an event in the United States.

Quest, seeking clarity, pressed Amin Adam for his personal stance on the matter, considering his dual roles as both a Member of Parliament and a senior government official.

“The most important thing is to discuss the effects of the law when passed… having said that, it is not for me to give the determination to the Supreme Court of our country.

“Let me state my point clearly again, there is a case before the Supreme Court and I am not going to prejudice the determination of the Supreme Court,” he said in an interview shared by Asaase Radio.

Asked whether he was not running away from responsibility, he responded: “The responsibility I am taking is, if the Supreme Court rules on this case and the president assents to it, I will subject myself to the laws of my country.”

The anti-LGBT+ bill was passed by parliament in late February, yet President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has opted to withhold his decision on signing it until after a challenge regarding the bill’s constitutionality is resolved.

Currently, two cases have been brought before the Supreme Court, contesting the bill’s legality.

Same man with nothing new to offer – Afenyo-Markin advices Ghanaians about Mahama

Majority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has voiced criticism against the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama.

Afenyo-Markin contends that Mahama’s candidacy lacks innovation and offers nothing new to Ghanaians, citing his track record as former vice president and president.

During a press briefing held in Parliament on April 19, 2024, the Effutu Member of Parliament asserted that Mahama’s leadership stint was marred by inefficiency and unfulfilled promises.

He argued that Mahama’s tenure as both Vice President and President failed to deliver on its pledges, thereby making him an unattractive choice for the electorate.

Afenyo-Markin’s critique underscores the perceived lack of vision for Ghana’s future within Mahama’s candidacy, highlighting concerns over his ability to bring about meaningful change if elected again.

“We have the NDC candidate who has had the opportunity to serve as vice president and president. He’s been vice president for three and a half years before and he’s been president for some four and half years.

“We know his track record. He is the same person with the same old team coming to tell us that they have something to offer but we know their track records.

“In any event, perish the thought, should opportunity smile at him he has only one term, there will be no sense of urgency. And we dare say that from day one that government will be in crisis because those party people will be struggling for who should be the next leader,” he said.

He added, “Ghanaians need a stable government with focus…Dr. Bawumia offers a better future than John Mahama.”

This isn’t the first instance where the Majority Leader has voiced criticism against Mahama.

Just last month, he made similar remarks on the floor of Parliament, highlighting concerns over Mahama’s ability to bring about meaningful change and questioning the novelty of his candidacy.

  • “If I were president, I’d be asking some serious questions” – Mahama on train crash

“If I were president, I’d be asking some serious questions” – Mahama on train crash

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, Former President John Dramani Mahama, has weighed in on the recent incident involving one of the newly acquired modern trains from Poland.

The Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) collided with a parked Hyundai truck during a test run on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line in the Asuogyaman District.

In a post shared on X on Friday, April 19, 2024, Mahama raised several concerns, suggesting negligence on the part of those responsible for conducting the test run.

He questioned why the newly acquired train was being tested on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, which was also new, without first ensuring that the tracks were properly checked.

“How can you conduct a test run on a new railway line without a track inspection?” he quizzed.

The former president also asked: “How long had the vehicle been on the track before the test run?”

He added that if he were the president, he would hold the people responsible for the incident accountable.

“If I were president, I’d be asking some serious questions,” he added.

    Background:

The Ministry of Railways Development, in a press statement issued on April 18, 2024, confirmed reports that one of the modern trains had been involved in a crash.

It said that the DMU hit a stationary vehicle during the test run, adding that no one was injured.

“At approximately 12:10 pm on Thursday, April 18, 2024, while conducting the test, an incident took place around Km76+100.

The DMU, upon approaching the curve at Km76+100, encountered a stationary vehicle stationed right across the rail track. Despite the immediate application of the emergency braking system, the train was unable to come to a complete stop before colliding with the vehicle,” the statement said.

The ministry added, “The DMU involved has been moved to the workshop for further assessment and necessary repairs.”

Following the incident, proponents of the government and ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), including the Minister for Railway Development, John-Peter Amewu, have made allegations that the incident was orchestrated to sabotage the deployment of the train.

Arsenal open to offers for Partey due to recurring injury problems

Arsenal is reportedly open to summer offers for midfielder Thomas Partey, largely due to his ongoing injury issues.

The decision follows Arsenal’s disappointing Champions League exit against Bayern Munich, with the team falling short with a 3-2 aggregate score in the quarterfinals.

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal is planning to focus on offloading four players in the upcoming summer transfer window.

This list includes Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson, Aaron Ramsdale, and, notably, Thomas Partey.

Partey, a 30-year-old Ghanaian international, joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid on October 5, 2020. Despite a promising start, injuries have plagued his time at Arsenal, limiting him to just eight Premier League appearances this season.

Despite being valued at €20,000,000 by Transfermarkt, Arsenal seems inclined to reconsider its midfield options due to Partey’s frequent injuries.

Abu Siddique calls on journalist to probe cost of moving the AMERI power plant to Kumasi

Policy analyst Siddique Abubakar Suleiman has called on journalists to investigate the expenses incurred in relocating the AMERI plant from Takoradi to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

He believes that the reported $36 million cost warrants scrutiny for accountability.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently commissioned the first phase of the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant (K1TPP), also known as AMERI, in Anwomaso.

However, reports of the substantial cost of transporting the plant have sparked controversy and raised questions about transparency and accountability.

Siddique contends that the decision to relocate the plant to Kumasi was politically motivated, aimed at appeasing voters in the region.

He emphasised that such tactics of “deceit” would not go unnoticed, especially considering the significant taxpayer expense involved.

“I want to take the angle of votes. The Ashanti Region will pull a surprise for the NDC. Despite all the loans the government has taken, they could not procure a power plant for the Ashanti Region,” he told Oheneba on Battle Ground on Power FM.

Speaking on the cost of transporting the parts of the power plant, Siddique stated, “$36 million for moving a plant from Takoradi to Kumasi? They should show us how they paid for the transportation of the power plant. This is pure thievery. Ghanaians should know that these people are stealing from us. These people do not deserve a change from us.”

“The journalists must investigate this amount… I think the NPP wants to take us for fools because this amount could have built schools. Do you know the number of schools this amount could have built?” he quizzed.

Touching on the hardship in the country, Siddique said, “Ghanaians should know that the NPP has taken us back 20 or 30 years.”

He also asked, “Does the $36 million include the installation of the power plant?” I believe Bawumia’s hands are in this deal because I know he likes locations where there is money.”

No project, nothing to show for as MP, just sharing of rice, oil – Dumelo on Lydia Alhassan

Ghanaian actor and politician, John Dumelo, has criticised the incumbent Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Lydia Alhassan, for what he perceives as a lack of tangible achievements since assuming office.

Dumelo pointed out that the MP has not initiated any notable projects in the constituency during her tenure. He accused her of resorting to distributing rice and oil to constituents only when elections are near, which he believes does not address the real needs of the people.

Speaking in an interview with 3FM, Dumelo urged Lydia to focus on creating employment opportunities and addressing infrastructural challenges to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the constituents.

“If you ask what she [Lydia Alhassan] has done in the last six years, she’s done nothing. If you ask the people, ‘What has Lydia done in the airport?’ Nothing… The only thing she’s doing is just sharing rice and oil with the people to solicit their votes. People are above rice and oil. They need jobs, they need infrastructure, and they need opportunities.”

Dumelo will be competing with Lydia Alhassan in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

It remains to be seen who will be victorious in the keenly contested elections slated for December 7, 2024.

Why the ‘hatred’? Where did NAPO go wrong – Kwesi Pratt asks Ghanaians

Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has voiced his disapproval of what he sees as relentless attacks on Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Pratt expressed concern over reports of groups targeting the minister, who also holds the position of Member of Parliament for the Manhyia South constituency.

He pointed out recent incidents, such as controversies surrounding Opoku Prempeh’s marriage and criticisms related to speculation about his potential selection as a running mate.

“One of today’s papers reports that a group of people are sabotaging Napo so that Bawumia won’t appoint him as his running mate. But where from this too?

“Truth be told, I haven’t heard Napo himself say that he wants to become Vice President. People are only expressing their views on the matter, that if he gets such an appointment, it would be good and that it would help the NPP and Ghana as a whole, which is not bad,” Pratt said on a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on April 15, 2024.

He raised doubts about the credibility of these rumours regarding the selection of a running mate and whether there is a deliberate attempt to hinder Opoku Prempeh’s political ambitions.

“So why should there be a conspiracy against him?

“What wrong has Napo done for people in the Ashanti region to sabotage him, That is not fair. When Napo got married recently, people were making a lot of noise about it,” he added.

La Dedekotopon primaries: President’s personal driver picks forms to contest seat

President Akufo-Addo’s personal driver, Joseph Addo, has officially entered the race for the La Dedekotopon NPP Parliamentary primary, scheduled for April 27, 2024.

Following vetting and approval by the party’s Greater Accra Elections Committee, Addo expressed confidence in his candidature, affirming his commitment to reclaiming the seat for the NPP.

“I was born and bred here in La; I have lived all my life here so I am not new in this constituency.”

Following the resignation of Dr. Gerald Joseph Tetteh, the elected parliamentary candidate for the constituency, the National Executive Committee of the NPP authorised a primary election to fill the vacancy.

In response, Solomon Kotey Niikio, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area, has submitted his nomination for the contest.

Meanwhile, Joseph Addo, who boasts over 20 years of service as President Akufo-Addo’s driver, has also thrown his hat into the ring.

Addo emphasises his contributions to the constituency’s development as part of his candidature platform.

He adds that “recently, when the party needed an office space after the destruction of the old office, I personally worked to get a new office for the party”.

Joseph Addo is optimistic about securing victory in the primary on April 27th and emerging triumphant in the main election on December 7th.

The NPP, which lost the La Dedekotopon seat to the NDC’s Rita Naa Odoley Sowah in the 2020 election, is eager to regain control of the constituency in the upcoming December polls.

Erik ten Hag forgives ‘young’ Garnacho for liking criticising substitution post

Erik ten Hag has emphasised that Alejandro Garancho still has much to learn, despite reconciling with the Argentine following an apology from him.

Garnacho’s performance in the first half against the Cherries resulted in his substitution at halftime, with United trailing 2-1.

The winger expressed frustration with the decision and later sparked controversy by liking two social media posts criticising his substitution.

Earlier in the week, a United spokesperson stated that the incident had been addressed internally. Now, Ten Hag has confirmed that Garnacho has apologised for his actions, leading to no disciplinary action being taken against him.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of United’s FA Cup semi-final against Coventry, Ten Hag told reporters: “Alejandro is a young player. He has to learn a lot. He has apologised for it and we move on.”

This isn’t the inaugural instance of Ten Hag dealing with disciplinary matters among his squad members this season. Previously, Jadon Sancho faced repercussions, such as being loaned out to Borussia Dortmund, after publicly criticising the manager on social media and refusing to retract his statements.

Additionally, Ten Hag denounced Marcus Rashford’s actions as unacceptable when the English forward was photographed attending a nightclub and consequently missed training.

Despite these challenges, Ten Hag maintains his focus on the upcoming FA Cup semifinal against Coventry and is adamant about not underestimating the opposition.

“They are dangerous. They are in the semi-finals. They do a fantastic job over there and we have seen the game against the Wolves in the quarterfinal; the mentality is fabulous,” he said.

As United’s final chance to clinch silverware this season, the FA Cup holds significant importance. Ten Hag is leaving no stone unturned in his quest to secure a spot in the summit clash.

  • Erik ten Hag defends Casemiro amid dipped form this season

Erik ten Hag defends Casemiro amid dipped form this season

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has come to the defence of Casemiro amidst criticism over his recent form.

After a subpar showing in the team’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, Casemiro faced intense scrutiny, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp drawing comparisons between his performance and that of a participant in Soccer Aid.

This dip in form follows a series of injuries that sidelined him for three months this season, leading to backlash from fans.

Despite the setbacks, Ten Hag remains steadfast in his belief in Casemiro’s capabilities and told reporters, “We needed a six when I arrived here and last season he was fantastic. I don’t think he had ever scored so many goals but as a holding midfielder, he was so important to the team.

This season he has struggled with a bad injury that he never had in his career but he is such a winner—all his career, he has always won. Everywhere he was, there was success. And I trust he will also bring us success. I know he needs games and he will be better. I am very confident about him, he is a fighter, which is why he has won big trophies. He has a personality and is a very important player.”

Casemiro has a memorable history at Wembley, notably scoring the opening goal against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final back in February 2023.

This performance earned him the Man of the Match award and helped secure the trophy for United.

Drawing on this example, Ten Hag made sure to highlight Casemiro’s significant contributions in crucial matches, emphasising that he remains an indispensable figure at the club.

“In that game—and not just that game but also in qualifying for the Champions Leaguehe was such an important factor,” said Ten Hag. “He made a difference.”

Casemiro will have the opportunity to make amends as United face Coventry on Sunday.

This match holds significant importance for the Red Devils, offering them the chance to progress to the final and secure silverware in what has otherwise been a disappointing campaign.

Mourinho banished me ! – Bastian Schweinsteiger recounts bitter Man Utd experience

Bastian Schweinsteiger has shared a startling revelation about his time at Manchester United, disclosing that on his 32nd birthday, manager Jose Mourinho exiled him from the first-team squad.

Instead, Schweinsteiger was relegated to training with the club’s under-16s.

Signed by Louis van Gaal a year prior, Schweinsteiger’s arrival at United was hailed, particularly given his successful stint as a central midfielder under van Gaal at Bayern Munich.

However, injuries limited his appearances during the latter half of the 2015/16 season, impacting his form heading into Euro 2016.

Upon returning for pre-season training under Mourinho’s leadership, Schweinsteiger quickly found himself marginalised, with Mourinho signalling from day one that he no longer featured in the club’s plans, leading to his demotion from the first-team setup.

“I was very sad because United was the second club of my heart. I gave a lot when I played as well, so that’s why I was sad, but I’m not the type of person to go running to the media. It’s more important for me to focus on football and behave the way I did,” the 39-year-old told Gary Neville on The Overlap.

“When I arrived on the first day, I trained with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and thought it was great—a player who has vision and is amazing to play with. The next day, on my birthday, when I walked into Carrington, [football director] John Murtough was there and said that I wasn’t allowed to walk into the dressing room—the coach had said so.

Arsenal lose out on Club World Cup spot after Champions League elimination

Arsenal’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup were dashed after a 1-0 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Mikel Arteta’s team faced disappointment in Germany as they lost 3-2 on aggregate to the Bundesliga side, ending their European aspirations.

This exit also means they miss out on the Club World Cup in the United States.

Teams can secure qualification in two ways: by winning the Champions League since 2021 or through a ranking system based on their performances in the tournament over four seasons.

With only two teams per country allowed to qualify, Arsenal needed to win this year’s competition to join Chelsea and Manchester City as UCL winners.

Their elimination opens up a spot for Red Bull Salzburg, who have played 26 Champions League games over the last four seasons.

Despite a strong effort in Germany, holding Bayern to a 0-0 scoreline until Joshua Kimmich’s 63rd-minute goal sealed their fate, Arsenal’s focus now shifts to the Premier League title race.

Currently sitting in second place, level on points with Liverpool but with a better goal difference, Arsenal must aim for league success as they try to prevent City from retaining their title.

Arteta’s side faces Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday as they resume their quest for Premier League glory.

  • New IFAB rule: This is why Emiliano Martinez remained on pitch even after 2 yellow cards

New IFAB rule: This is why Emiliano Martinez remained on pitch even after 2 yellow cards

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez narrowly escaped a red card during his team’s match against Lille on Thursday, thanks to a lesser-known rule that resets yellow card counts before penalty shoot-outs.

Martinez received a yellow card in the first half for timewasting, as Villa aimed to preserve their aggregate lead. Later, during the penalty shoot-out, the referee issued Martinez a second yellow card for his behaviour.

To the surprise of many observers, Martinez was not sent off despite accumulating two yellow cards. This was not an error by the referee but rather a consequence of a recent rule alteration by the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

The IFAB decided that all cautions issued to players and coaches during regular time would not carry over to penalty shoot-outs. Therefore, although Martinez is officially recorded with two yellow cards, the first one did not count for penalties, allowing him to remain on the pitch.

However, Martinez is expected to serve a one-game suspension for accumulating two yellow cards in one match. This suspension will likely take effect in the first leg of the semi-final.

Following the match, Martinez maintained his innocence and claimed he had been unfairly targeted due to his reputation.

“I just have a bad reputation for time-wasting because the other goalie was doing exactly the same thing,” Martinez said.

He continued: “I get booked after 30 minutes, and we’re losing the game, so I don’t know what the ref wants from me. There was no ball on the penalty spot, and I’m asking for a ball from a ball boy and then I get booked. I don’t understand the rules.”

The tie had ended 3-3 on aggregate, with Matt Cash’s late goal sending the game into extra time after Aston Villa had seen Lille wipe out their first leg lead to seize the initiative.

Premier League: Klopp says time to focus on title after Europa League exit

Liverpool’s exit from the Europa League quarterfinals could serve as a catalyst for them to channel their energies into the pursuit of the Premier League title, according to manager Jurgen Klopp.

Despite securing a 1-0 victory in the return leg against Atalanta in Italy with an early penalty from Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s hopes were dashed as they bowed out 3-1 on aggregate after trailing 3-0 in the first leg at Anfield.

“Disappointed that we did not go through but not frustrated or angry. Now we can focus on the league and that’s what we will do,” Klopp told reporters.

“We have a few days to recover and then we play Fulham, which will be tricky but we will give our absolute all. That’s our competition now.”

Liverpool, currently in third place, find themselves tied with Arsenal at 71 points, but they lag behind on goal difference. Meanwhile, league leaders Manchester City sit at the top with 73 points.

When questioned about Mohamed Salah’s recent performances, manager Jurgen Klopp expressed no apprehension regarding the forward’s form.

“The penalty was super-convincing, a super penalty, then the next chance, that was obviously unlucky but it is not the first time he missed a chance like that,” Klopp added.

“I am not particularly concerned. That’s what strikers do, that’s what happens to strikers, its how it is.”

NFL calls back players suspended over gambling violations

NFL has lifted the suspensions of five players who were barred from the 2023 season due to violations of the league’s gambling policy.

Among those reinstated are Shaka Toney, a defensive end for the Washington Commanders, and four free agents: Rashod Berry, Quintez Cephus, C.J. Moore, and Demetrius Taylor.

However, Isaiah Rodgers, another player suspended last year, remains under review.

Rodgers, along with Berry, was part of the Indianapolis Colts when suspended, and both were released by the team last year.

Cephus and Moore, previously with the Detroit Lions, also saw their suspensions lifted.

Cephus, known for his 60 catches, 568 yards, and four touchdowns during his time with the Lions, while Moore played 56 games for Detroit from 2019 to 2022.

Toney, a seventh-round pick in 2021, has recorded 1.5 sacks with Washington over two seasons.

Taylor, who was a free agent when suspended, completes the list of reinstated players.
