    Angry protestor invokes God’s wrath on Akufo-Addo during #OccupyJulorbiHouse demo

    A female participant in the recently concluded #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest organized by Democracy Hub and concerned citizens, Naseebah, did not mince her words when criticizing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, branding him as the “most ineffective president to date.”

    During an emotionally charged interview with JoyNews, Naseebah voiced her deep-seated frustration with the state of affairs in Ghana, with a particular focus on the hardships faced by the country’s youth and the ailing healthcare system.

    Naseebah’s anger resonated through her words as she painted a stark picture of the dire circumstances confronting many Ghanaians. She recounted the heart-wrenching story of a dedicated teacher who had devoted more than three decades of his life to public service, only to tragically lose his son due to an inability to cover the GH¢400 weekly cost of dialysis treatment.

    In addition to this, she leveled allegations at the government, accusing it of misappropriating funds on frivolous expenses while pressing issues continued to plague the nation. Naseebah raised pertinent questions about the government’s priorities, particularly in light of the heavy tax burden on citizens and the ever-rising cost of living.

    “I am very angry, I am angrier this morning, people are dying each day, and the dialysis machine in Korle Bu got spoilt, do you know the number of people who died? A 24-year-old boy died this morning; the father is a teacher and over thirty years of his life in the service could not afford dialysis of GH¢400 a week. What do you mean? Do you know how much taxes they charge us every day, the cost of living in this country but you bring flowers to celebrate your daughter’s birthday, you bring a cake to celebrate E-Levy.”

    On the final day of the three-day #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstrations, protesters made an attempt to breach a police barricade late into the night with the aim of marching towards the presidential residence.

    This move came despite the unlawful detentions and heavy-handedness displayed by the police on Day 1, during which they arrested 49 protesters, who were subsequently held for hours on charges of unlawful assembly. Eventually, all of them were released on bail.

    Days 2 and 3 transpired with minimal incidents as the police maintained a barricade on the main road leading to the presidential residence, Jubilee House, even before the protesters commenced their march towards the location.

    While Day 2 involved the blockage of one section of the 37-Accra Road, the final day saw both sides blocked, significantly impeding vehicular traffic for a considerable portion of the day.

    Ghanaian youth are being stupid—Mr Logic 

    Several Ghanaians, on September 21, 2023 joined the #OccupyJulorbiHouse which was organised by the civil society group, Democracy hub, to express their dissatisfaction with the government’s performance on various issues such as high cost of living, corruption, and press freedom.

    Although many have supported the actions of these protesters, others, such as entertainment critic Mr Logic, believe Ghanaian youth are being stupid for allowing themselves to be driven by people’s personal agendas.

    Expressing his opinion on the controversies surrounding the protest, however, and acknowledging the right of every Ghanaian to protests, the chairman of Ghana Song Writers Association stated that,

    “As much as you have a constitutional right to protest, its not right for you to always be found on the streets protesting.

    “Do not allow yourself to be dragged by people’s personal interests and agendas.

    People are allowing themselves to be fooled by people’s agendas,” he said while speaking on UTV’s United ShowBiz on Saturday , September 23, 2023.

    On his part, the police acted right by preventing the protest from taking place on the first day, as the service’s core mandate is to “protect and serve”. 

    Hence once it perceives an impending danger or disturbing occurrence, the service has every right to restore calm and maintain order, exactly what they did during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse.

    “Then we later point fingers at the police for no reason. What is the core mandate of the police? It is to protect and serve,

    “So if you hit the street to protest and the police perceive danger or a disturbance, those who must be held will be held; one’s who will be pushed will be pushed, just as others will be forced to sit.”

    “And what is the crime in doing that? First of all, if we didn’t want anyone to protest, nobody would have been allowed anywhere near the jubilee house.

    “There’s no way any of them could have gone anywhere close to the Jubilee; as we speak, this is the third year of their protest.

    Likening the #OccupyJulorbiHouse to the riots of 1948, where three ex-servicemen marched to Christiansburg Castle in a protest to demand their unpaid war benefits after their fight in World War II. 

    They were stopped by the colonial police, who shot and killed three of them.

    This incident triggered widespread riots and protests in Accra and other parts of the country.

    Hence, Mr Logic advised the youth to be circumspect in their dealings and engagement in such protests, as many believe that the only way they can register their displeasure is by protesting.

    “Sometimes the youth believe that protest is the way.  If you haven’t lived in a violent community, you might think it is a pleasant experience”, he said.

    The founder and president of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has voiced strong criticism against the Electoral Commission (EC) for its refusal to expand the venues for the ongoing voter registration process.

    During an interview on Citi TV’s political talk show, The Big Issue, Cudjoe accused the EC of employing a “Machiavellian approach” in its actions, which he argued was disenfranchising a significant portion of the Ghanaian population.

    Cudjoe also expressed disapproval of the EC’s decision to revise the expected number of registrants. He questioned the rationale behind such a move and urged the EC to permit registration at multiple centres for the convenience of the public.

    He further advised the EC to adopt a more practical approach, commending Joseph Whittal, the head of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), for opposing the EC’s position.

    However, Cudjoe criticised the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) for not speaking out against the EC’s actions and stance.

    “I haven’t seen that of the NCCE. The NCCE has shut its mouth and eyes to all the things that are happening in the EC,” he pointed out.

    A portion of the public has expressed dissatisfaction with the Electoral Commission’s decision to restrict voter registration centres to district offices, which are frequently inconveniently situated for numerous eligible voters.

    Various civil society organisations and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have urged the EC to broaden the registration process to more accessible sites.

    Despite these calls, the EC has stood firm in its position and continued to conduct registration exclusively at its district offices.

    Former Auditor General, Daniel Domelevo, has voiced his dissent against those advocating for the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, to halt his anti-corruption endeavours amidst criticism from government officials.

    In his perspective, it is improper for individuals to propose that the Special Prosecutor should abandon his mission to investigate the embezzlement case and assets related to the former Minister of Sanitation, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

    Domelevo clarified that it is a constitutional obligation for the government to address corrupt activities and instances of office misuse, as stipulated in the state policies outlined in the constitution.

    “So he comes in to play a role to ensure that even if we can’t eradicate as required by the constitution, at least reduce it to the barest minimum.

    “So if he [Special Prosecutor] has difficulties and they say he should just stop it, what happens if a different person comes and he also has difficulties then we leave it like that, no,” he said on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday.

    Mr Domelevo stressed that it is essential to support the Office of the Special Prosecutor in his mission to fight against corruption and corruption-related activities because he is not just fighting it for himself but also making financial savings for the country.

    “So we should rather be resolved in helping him to be successful,” he said.

    Commenting on the practice of journalists obtaining court documents and publishing them with regard to Madam Dapaah’s case, the former Auditor General expressed his preference for completing investigations before disclosing extensive details.

    He explained that in audits, initial findings might seem severe, but as investigations progress, issues can be mitigated or resolved.

    Mr Domelevo suggested that the law should differentiate between information accessible during an investigation and after charges have been filed.

    He expressed his belief that when the prosecution of Madam Dapaah begins, “the charges against her can be dismissed by the court depending on the defenses that she would raise.”

    The Ghana Police Service has issued an apology to the public for any inconvenience caused during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest, particularly to commuters who were obstructed by the protesters’ roadblock on Saturday.

    “The police would also like to apologise to members of the public who were inconvenienced in one way or another, especially those who were caught up in the vehicular holdups during the demonstration,” the police said in a statement issued on September 23.

    The demonstrators had blocked the road after the Ghana Police Service set up barriers along the route leading to the Jubilee House in an attempt to prevent them from advancing and emphasising their demands.

    Despite the police presence, the protesters chose not to disperse. Instead, they waited and sat on the streets, intending to identify an alternative route. This led to significant traffic congestion on the road.

    In an unexpected twist, a police officer, recognizing the traffic gridlock caused by the protest, took a seat in the middle of the road and appealed to the demonstrators to clear a path for the flow of traffic.

    However, the protesters remained steadfast and declined to comply, insisting that it wouldn’t be feasible.

    The demonstration eventually concluded, and the roads were reopened to facilitate smooth vehicular traffic movement.

    The police also expressed their intention to arrange a debriefing meeting with the organisers, aiming to promote more productive engagement in the future.

    “We have a track record of providing security for demonstrations in the past and would continue to do so within the confines of the law.

    “We, therefore, urge the general public to continue to partner with us, as we work towards deepening our democratic credentials and maintaining peace and security in our beloved country,” said the police.

    Sustainability, Climate, and Social Innovation Advisor Enam Akoetey has strongly criticised Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the convener of the FixTheCountry movement, for his recent decision to reveal an alleged bribery attempt to hinder his activism.

    Barker-Vormawor has accepted the Ministry of National Security’s challenge to provide evidence supporting his claim that he was offered a $1 million bribe in 2021 by a government minister.

    The lawyer and activist asserted that he possesses evidence to substantiate his allegations and intends to make it public after the ongoing #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

    During an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile program on Saturday, September 23, Enam Akoetey expressed her disbelief at why Barker-Vormawor, who advocates for improved leadership and integrity, withheld the supposed audio for nearly two years before deciding to disclose it.

    She stated that, in her opinion, she would have released such audio on the very day the alleged conversation regarding inducements took place, as she values transparency and integrity.

    “There are a lot of claims going out and I am saying that are they all about integrity. If you are saying that a lot of people called you to say that don’t publish something, the question is if you are a person that is value-driven, would you listen to them or say –I hear what you are asking me to do but it is the wrong thing so I am going to defy you and publish?”

    “So why would it take him two to three years for him to publish this audio?” she queried.

    This follows taking up the challenge from the National Security Minister, Kan Dapaah to produce evidence of the alleged attempt by government to induce him with an amount of $1 million so they cease his “activism”.

    Speaking on the same news analysis programme on Saturday, the FixTheCountry’s Convener clarified that the meeting he [Oliver Barker-Vormawor] made reference to was an exclusive secret meeting between him and the Minister of National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah even before the first FixTheCountry protest in 2021.

    “The Minister of National Security has issued a statement claiming that I was met with other FixTheCountry conveners and other stakeholders. I want to put it on record that the meeting I am talking about happened exclusively between myself and the Minister for National Security where that offer was made to me.

    “I will release an audio into the public domain, which would confirm that the Minister invited me to a secret safe house location, that we should have an individual meeting between him and myself, at which meeting he made that offer to myself. No other FixThecountry convener was involved there,” he revealed.

    Former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelovo has raised doubts about the efficiency of Ghana’s current Assets Declaration Law.

    During an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile program on Saturday, he expressed his opinion that the existing law is ineffective and lacks suitability for its intended purpose.

    He further emphasised the necessity for enhancements to the Assets Declaration Bill that is currently under consideration in Parliament.

    “We have to take seriously the Assets and Liabilities declarations by office holders in the country. You and I agree that the law as it stands at the moment is a joke,” he told Samson Lardy Anyenini.

    He explained that if the law were effective, it would have helped hasten investigations into the alleged “stolen money case” of the former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

    “If the declaration was properly done and verified, I think some of the claims date as far back as 2003 or 2005—that was when she was in the previous NPP administration—so we could have gone there to see whether those things were declared, properly verified and existed, and it would have helped the investigation and also been published.”

    Mr. Domelevo’s remarks follow the recent court documents filed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), which have revealed that a bank account belonging to the deceased brother of a former Sanitation Minister has been actively transferring funds to the former Minister.

    Exclusive copies of these documents, obtained by JoyNews and submitted to the court by the OSP, also suggest that the former Minister holds millions of cedis, the origins of which the OSP alleges she could not substantiate.

    This development represents the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s ongoing efforts to ascertain the seizure of properties suspected to be ill-gotten by Madam Dapaah.

    In response to this situation, the former Auditor General cautioned against hasty judgements that might lead to contempt of court. He additionally called for the implementation of a lifestyle audit.

    This, according to him, will serve as a preemptive measure to check and hold public officers accountable “when we think their lifestyle is not in sync with their resources.”

    He added that it can help limit the extent to which public holders can abuse public funds.

    Akraba Nana, a 47-year-old individual who is currently in sixth grade, shared his inspiring journey of returning to school after a prolonged period of dropping out.

    He explained that he became a father to seven other students, which served as a motivating factor for his decision to resume his education.

    In an exclusive interview with Asaase Radio, the 47-year-old recounted his life story.

    He revealed that when he was just 14 years old, he was forced to leave school and discontinue his education during his third-grade year due to the unfortunate passing of his parents.

    “I was in class three when I lost both parents; then my future ambitions crashed, and I had to leave school,” he said.

    According to Akraba Nana, affectionately called Schoolboy, after the demise of his parents, he was forced to move from one place to another in search of greener pastures and finally decided to settle in Akraba, a suburb of Cape Coast in the Central Region.

    While in Akraba, he quickly established himself as a head porter at the Kotokoraba Market.

    Through it all, Akraba Nana said he took solace in music and realised he has a notch for making music and wanted to make the most of his newly discovered talent.

    Unfortunately for him, his inability to read and write made it impossible for him to script his song lyrics. Even more frustrating for him was the inability of paid writers to write his songs without ambiguity.

    “All those who wrote my songs for me did not write it exactly the way I wanted to bring out the lyrics,” Akraba said.

    It was this challenge—the inability to write his songs—that forced him to go back to school, Akraba revealed.

    “The motivation to write my songs forced me to go back to school. After consultation with my wife, I decided to go back to school to be able to read and write.”

    Akraba commutes close to a kilometre each day to St. Paul Catholic School. He does that every morning in the company of his seven kids; four of them are his seniors, and two are his classmates.

    Unlike other students who were admitted to Nursery One on the first day, Akraba had a waiver to begin his school journey in class three.

    “The headmistress was admitting nursery students, as at the time I was also seeking admission. Per the school rules, the window was opened for nursery students, but the headmistress allowed me to start in class three,” he recalled.

    He explained that the first group consists of individuals who genuinely have concerns and are passionately advocating for a transformation in the way the nation is governed. In contrast, the second group comprises those who attended the event primarily to seek attention.

    On the third day of the protest, Sarkodie shared his perspective, citing certain videos from the event as the basis for his observation.

    His tweet read: “I watch videos and I see clearly the ‘real’ protesters complaining about the hardship they are facing (which should be amplified) and not caring who is there and who is not because it goes beyond that…”

    “And as always, we have the “Clout Chasers” changing the agenda on the grounds of the unnecessary trend. Big shouts to all citizens and all public figures with the purest intent to fight for change. May we not miss the target.”

    Sarkodie extended his commentary to President Akufo-Addo in a subsequent tweet, reminding him of the underlying motivations driving the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests that shook the capital, Accra, from September 21 to 23.

    According to the artist, who is currently in the US, suffocating hardships were at the heart of the mass action. He observed that the tone-deaf nature of the government was evident that appointees were clearly not in tune with the realities of the ordinary Ghanaian.

    “Main reason for this demonstration is to let you know the people (citizens) are suffocating in hardship! It’s easy to overlook since most government officials are nowhere close to the situation on the ground! It’s a bully when you starve someone and still ask them to follow ‘Rules’ it’s only a matter of time,” his tweet read.

    The #OccupyJulorbiHouse movement has gained significant momentum for legitimate reasons, continuously dominating the top trending topics for three consecutive days. Under the guidance of Democracy Hub, protesters have taken to the streets to voice their concerns about economic hardships and corruption.

    On Day 1, which took place on September 21, during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests organised by Democracy Hub, the police unlawfully detained hundreds of protesters who were marching to demand action regarding the ongoing economic crisis and issues of corruption.

    These arrests, along with the manner in which they were carried out by the police, received strong criticism for infringing on the constitutional right to protest and for the use of excessive force.

    The detainees were transported to the regional headquarters and then dispersed among approximately eight police stations scattered across the capital.

    During this process, other journalists and protesters who had gathered, particularly at the Accra Regional Command, encountered instances of police aggression, including pushing, unwarranted detention, confiscation of phones, and, in some cases, physical assault.

    Days 2 and 3 of the protests proceeded without any major incidents, as the police set up barricades on the main road leading to the presidency, Jubilee House, even before the protesters commenced their march towards the location.

    On Day 2, one part of the 37-Accra Road was blocked, while the final day witnessed the closure of both sides, resulting in significant traffic disruptions throughout the day.

    Both Day 2 and Day 3 also saw the participation of some celebrities in the protest.

    According to him, Mr Afriyie’s failure to fill out his forms well indicates that he is not fit enough to steer the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as president.

    “Someone who is purporting to become the Ghana Football Association president, the highest position and the person is not able to fill out a form and we should give our football to this person?” he said.

    The Minority in Parliament has raised accusations against the Presidency, alleging that it exerted pressure on the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) to secure a $431 million loan agreement from Lukoil International Trading and Supply Company (LITASCO) SA, a Swiss company involved in refinery and retail operations across Europe.

    The Minority contends that this action by the Presidency is not only unconstitutional and unlawful but also a clear violation of Parliament’s directive and resolution.

    Based on a memo obtained by the Minority, it appears that the Presidency convened a meeting on September 14, 2023, at 11 a.m.

    During this meeting, the GNPC was directed to seek board approval to raise the specified amount without the need for parliamentary approval.

    However, it’s worth noting that certain members of the GNPC board expressed their reservations about this directive.

    The attendees at this meeting included the Chief of Staff, the Executive Secretary to the President, the Minister of Finance, the Deputy Minister of Energy, the CEOs of Karpower and LITASCO, as well as other executives from these companies.

    Don’t commit illegality

    Speaking to the press in Parliament on Wednesday (Sept 20), the Ranking Member on the Mines and Energy Committee, John Jinapor, called on the Chief Executive of the GNPC and the board to decline the directive from the Presidency.

    “If you proceed with this directive, you will be committing an illegality. You do not have that mandate or that power to enter into such an agreement without parliamentary approval.

    “The Minority wishes to serve notice that we shall use every necessary tool available to ensure that we do what is right and legal,” Mr Jinapor warned.

    Parliament’s directive

    Just before Parliament adjourned in August of this year, the Committee on Mines and Energy, led by Chairman Samuel Atta Akyea, presented a report on the GNPC’s 2023 work programme.

    One of the significant matters discussed was the GNPC’s request to secure a $620 million loan facility from LITASCO SA.

    Parliament made a decision during this session, opting not to approve the specified amount as part of the GNPC’s work program.

    Instead, Parliament clearly instructed the corporation to provide the terms and conditions of the proposed loan, following the guidelines outlined in Article 181 of the Constitution. This information is necessary for the House to review and make a final determination regarding the loan request.

    “To utmost shock, we have come across a document indicating that the Presidency is using coercive force and the power of the Presidency to compel the GNPC to proceed and execute this loan agreement without parliamentary approval,” he said.
    He pointed out that some of the board members kicked against such illegality.

    Collaterizing TEN Field oil

    The MP added that another document that was also intercepted at the board level of the GNPC had what he described as the deed of indebtedness, the JOHL Crude Oil Supply and Purchase Agreement, the Jubilee Oil Holding Limited (JOHL) prepayment facility agreement, the guarantees facility agreement and the crude oil supply and purchase agreement.

    “The key has to do with the fact that GNPC is raising this facility from LITASCO LUKOIL and in return, they are giving our oil out to this company for the next five and a half years.

    “Indeed, all the oil in the TEN Oil Field have been incorporated, including royalties and our carried and participating interests will be escrowed into this company

    More importantly, Mr Jinapor explained that every year, a minimum of 3.8 million barrels of crude oil would be given to LITASCO for the loan being raised.

    “No one even knows exactly what they want to use this money for apart from some repayment of debt.

    “This is a government that received over $1.4 billion of oil receipts in 2022, the highest ever, and despite receiving this huge oil revenue from our oil sales, you want to take $431 million today and mortgage our future for the next five-and-a-half years and escrow the whole of TEN field oil,” he added.

    According to the September 2023 Bank of Ghana Summary of Economic and Financial Data, Ghana’s public debt has seen a total rise of GH¢27.7 billion since January 2023. Of this debt, GH¢328.6 billion (equivalent to US$29.9 billion) is attributed to external debt, while GH¢246.9 billion ($30.8 billion) is from domestic sources.

    Notably, the figures reveal a GH¢7.3 billion increase in external debt compared to April 2023, when it stood at GH¢321.3 billion. In contrast, domestic debt has decreased slightly from GH¢247.9 billion to GH¢246.9 billion over the same period.

    However, the nominal GDP has remained stable at GH¢800.9 billion as of June 2023, maintaining the level reported in January 2023.

    This represents a significant increase from the GH¢610.2 billion reported in June 2022.

    “An offside position refers to a player who is closer to the opponent’s goal line than the ball itself; it is not enough to say that a player is in an offside position and therefore is to be penalised,” he said.

    The Government of Ghana, in collaboration with the European Union and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), has initiated a €10 million project aimed at assisting 50,000 vulnerable Ghanaians facing food security challenges in various parts of the Northern Region.

    This project has several key objectives:

    1. To establish more economically sustainable and inclusive food systems.
    2. To empower communities to develop resilient and profitable food production systems while promoting environmental sustainability.
    3. To enhance social sustainability and gender inclusivity within food systems.
    4. To improve the governance and institutional sustainability of food systems.

    The allocated funds will primarily support the second phase of the Planting for Food and Jobs programme (PFJ 2.0) and will target specific commodities.

    These efforts complement the government’s initiatives to mitigate the adverse impacts of rising food, fertiliser, and fuel prices in vulnerable areas, with the ultimate goal of reducing poverty, hunger, and malnutrition.

    Dr. Bryan Acheampong, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, expressed gratitude for the crucial financial support from the EU, emphasising the significance of international solidarity in addressing global food security challenges, especially in light of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

    He highlighted the shared commitment to ensuring food security, poverty reduction, and sustainable development in Ghana, acknowledging the substantial contributions made by the EU and its member states to Ghana’s economic progress.

    The Minister said the EU, through its Member States and Development Programmes, had made significant contributions to Ghana’s economic progress.

      “The agricultural sector has received a substantial amount of aid in the form of grants over the years. Under the current 11th European Development Fund, the EU-GAP programme allocated €132 million in grants for various interventions in the agricultural sector,” he added.

    Dr Acheampong said the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine crisis, climate change and other factors had exacerbated the situation of many households, which struggled to access adequate and nutritious food.

    “These challenges also put pressure on our food systems and require us to rethink our strategies to ensure food security and resilience in a sustainable way,” he added.

    The Minister urged all partners to align all ongoing projects and future projects with PFJ 2.0 to ensure efficient and effective use of resources to achieve the common goal of increased food security, import substitution, increased exports, and job creation.

    He expressed appreciation to FAO for the long-standing relations and collaboration through several policy and Technical Cooperation Projects in support of the agricultural sector.

    Mr Yurdi Yasmi, FAO Representative in Ghana, said the project was a three-year emergency initiative to rapidly enhance food security and promote resilience in parts of northern Ghana. 

    “This is part of an EU regional response to address food crises and economic shocks in African countries that have been hit by global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and climate change, among others,” he added.

    The Representative emphasised that this support aligns closely with the EU’s “Farm to Fork Strategy,” which is designed to ensure a consistent and secure food supply, even in times of crisis. The strategy aims to provide citizens with a reliable source of safe, nutritious, affordable, and sustainable food at all times.

    Additionally, this initiative aims to have a lasting impact on the enhancement of sustainable food production and the resilience of food systems in Ghana. It seeks to achieve economic, environmental, and social benefits within the country’s agrifood systems intentionally.

    Mr. Yasmi highlighted the use of technologies and social innovations as key tools to enhance the efficiency of food production, particularly in improving water efficiency in agriculture.

    Furthermore, the project will leverage digital agriculture, another technological aspect, to significantly reduce market failures and enhance the overall functioning of agricultural markets. This approach also aligns with tapping into the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area.

    “The collaboration between FAO, the EU and the government shows our commitment to rural families in Ghana and ending hunger and malnutrition while supporting the transition to more sustainable agrifood systems,” Mr Yasmi said. 

    Mr. Irchad Razaaly, the EU Ambassador to Ghana, highlighted that the swift mobilisation of €10 million for this emergency initiative underscores the EU’s commitment and solidarity, along with that of its Member States, in response to the escalating food prices. The primary objective is to safeguard food security and facilitate the transition to more robust food systems within Ghana.

    Under this initiative, special attention will be given to capacity-building support for women, youth, and value chain participants. They will gain access to post-harvest technologies and receive training on vital aspects such as climate change adaptation, market access, financial services, and pest and disease management.

    Former goalkeeper for Hearts of Oak, Ebenezer Armah Dida, has expressed his belief that the choice to bring in foreign coaches doesn’t consistently yield the expected outcomes.

    Dida pointed out that not even Ernst Middendrop, whom he regards as the most accomplished expatriate coach at the club, managed to secure the Ghana Premier League title during his tenure.

    Dida is concerned that history might repeat itself with the recent appointment of Dutchman Martin Koopman as the club’s head coach.

    He said: “I have always said this. Foreign coaches do not help us. When I check our history, the only foreign coach who helped us was Middendrop. That was in my time but I can’t say the same for others. He (Middendrop) even failed to win the league,” Dida said.

    “When Boadu (coach Samuel Boadu) came, he won two trophies with Hearts. He is a Ghanaian. So, check the history. That’s what I know.”

    Hearts of Oak lost their opening game against RTU and will be hoping to bounce back when they host Nsoatreman this weekend.

    In August 2023, the Producer Price inflation rate saw a notable decrease, falling from the 32.9% recorded in July to 28.3%, marking a 4.6% point reduction.

    Breaking down the sectors, the Industry sector experienced a modest decline, decreasing by 0.6% to reach 30.6% in August.

    Meanwhile, in the construction sector, there was an increase of 6.8%, leading to a rate of 24.6% for the same month.

    In contrast, the Services sector maintained a steady rate of 15%.

    The Government Statistician, in a released statement, attributed this overall decrease to specific sectors. Electricity and gas recorded the highest rate at 68.3%, followed by Transportation and storage at 37.3%.

    The Mining and Quarrying sub-sector, on the other hand, saw a slight decline of 0.3 percentage points, resulting in a rate of 32.8% in August 2023.

    Accommodation and food recorded an inflation rate of 27.0%, while the Manufacturing sub-sector experienced a 1.0 percentage point decline, settling at 23.5%.

    Additionally, the Water Supply, Sewerage, and Waste Management Sub-sector registered an inflation rate of 38.1%, and Information and Communication recorded a rate of 11.0%.

    George Afriyie is poised to become the second presidential aspirant, following Wilfred Osei Kwaku, to file a petition challenging the GFA’s Appeals Committee at CAS after being disqualified by the Elections Committee.

    George Afriyie’s legal advisor, Esquire Richard Saaka, exudes confidence in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overturning the Appeals Committee’s verdict that upheld his client’s disqualification.

    In a previous report by mynewsgh.com, it was revealed that George Afriyie, the former GFA vice president, has chosen to contest the Appeals Committee’s decision to uphold his disqualification at CAS.

    This decision was prompted by the Appeals Committee’s communication of its dismissal of his application.

    In an interview with Citi FM, Saaka said, ”We are going to go to CAS… and that’s the instructions I have. We are exploring the situation where the court in Ghana will explore the breaches of the rules on natural justice as far as George Afriyie’s candidature to stand for the office of the GFA president is concerned.”

    Additionally, Saaka disclosed that pursuing an injunction application in the High Court to halt the GFA’s elections remained a viable alternative.

    ”That is the first thing we need to note: that it is not only CAS that can deal with this matter. The second thing we need to note is that, in the case we put before the Appeals Committee, we put a case including the breaches of natural justice.”

    ”The decisions have been that, when it comes to allegations (sic) of breaches of rules on natural justice, these contractual rules on agreement between parties, such as the statutes of the GFA, would not override the decisions or the authorities of the court.”

    Afriyie made this decision following the Appeals Committee’s rejection of his application, citing his failure to obtain the necessary signatures to endorse his candidature as the reason for dismissal.

    In its decision, the Appeals Committee said the sixth person is an ”in-house lawyer of the Ghana Football Association. The lawyer was not part of the vetting team and did not ask George Kwasi Afriyie any questions. The lawyer provided administrative assistance to the committee.”

    The Appeals Committee further asserted that, in response to Afriyie’s claim that the Committee breached the rule of ”Natural Justice and Fair Hearing” of his candidature when it ”failed, neglected, and refused to apply article 8(3) of the FA regulations on elections,” the Appeals Committee said ”it is not a case that a Police Clearance Certificate or passport picture had not been included, which would have warranted the application of article 8(3) of the Elections Regulations.”

    George Afriyie will become the second presidential aspirant after Wilfred Osei Kwaku to petition to challenge the GFA’s Appeals Committee at CAS following disqualification by the Elections Committee. In Kwaku Osei’s case in 2019, CAS upheld the decision of the Committee.

    In a recent interview, Amanda Clinton, a former presidential aspirant of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), expressed her admiration for the work done by GFA President Kurt Okraku during his first term, characterizing it as a “fairly decent job.”

    She commended Okraku for his efforts in reviving Ghana Football, particularly in light of the challenges it had encountered in the past.

    While acknowledging Okraku’s performance, Clinton also raised concerns about his apparent reluctance to engage with challengers in the upcoming election.

    Notably, George Afriyie, the sole challenger, had been disqualified, and his appeal was subsequently rejected. This has raised questions about the democratic process within the GFA.

    “Optics-wise, it’s going to look really bad because he is the incumbent. He’s done a fairly decent job because of COVID. So to sit there as a de facto dictator-like figure when last four years we had, I think, six contenders, does not show anything of clearing the rot per se,” Clinton stated.

    Expanding on her point, Amanda Clinton emphasised that, from an optics perspective, the current GFA President’s decision to avoid facing challengers in the upcoming election could be seen as the least favourable option.

    This decision might suggest a sense of apprehension or unease, albeit for unspecified reasons.

    It’s worth noting that Kurt Okraku, who secured victory in the 2019 elections, is approaching the end of his tenure, with the election slated for October 5th of the same year.

    Ghana’s tourism minister, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, has announced plans by his outfit to leverage the importance and “love” Ghanaians attach to funerals to convert funerals into tourist sites.

    During a media engagement, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal mentioned that his outfit would scout for tourist sites proximate to such ceremonies, where local dishes and drinks, among other crafts, would be sold. 

    “When there are funerals, people gather in places. What we want to do, i.e., the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), is that when there are funerals, we will also find tourist attractions at the places where the funerals occur, so that when they finish, we are going to serve Ghanaian dishes, Ghanaian drinks, sobolo and co.,” he noted.

    To facilitate easy movement to their respective funeral grounds, the ministry plans to provide free transportation services to funeral attendees.

    This, the minister said, would help many travellers explore the various tourist facilities in the particular town or city where the funeral is being hosted. 

    “And then we can also bus those attending the funeral.  For example, if there’s a funeral here, we will make an announcement that there’s a bus.

    “You can go to Bonwire; the kente is there,people are selling kente there, there are sandals, and when you go there, you will spend the money .

    “We will bus them for free when you go to that area. When they go to that area, there are restaurants and bars where they will eat. They will buy water, they will buy artefacts, and they are enriching the rural economy by providing jobs”, Dr Awal added.

    There is a need, Dr. Awal said, to utilise funerals to explore tourist attractions and enrich cultural resources, in order to create employment opportunities for the youth.

    “That’s why we want to say take advantage of funerals to explore tourist attractions and to deepen cultural assets, thereby creating jobs for our youth .
