Inter Milan set to finalize permanent deal for Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku is nearing a permanent transfer from Chelsea to Inter Milan.

Following Inter’s Serie A victory in 2021, Lukaku initially returned to Stamford Bridge for a second stint but subsequently went back to the San Siro on loan last season.

Despite having two bids rejected by Chelsea, Inter is determined to secure the services of the striker. A look at what will take to finalise the deal

    Chelsea valuation

Inter’s opening offer of £23million for Lukaku was reportedly rejected, as was an improved bid of £26m.

Chelsea are said to be holding out for £40m, having already dismissed the notion of allowing the forward to leave on another loan deal.

That valuation might seem like a lot of money for a goalscorer who recently turned 30 but it is worth remembering that the West Londoners paid £97.5m to bring him back to Stamford Bridge only two years ago.

Inter are not too far away from the Blues’ price tag and might be able to seal the transfer once they have brought in funds from a major sale.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana is on the brink of moving to Manchester United after a fee of £47m was agreed for the Cameroonian.

That transfer getting over the line could be key to Lukaku returning to Inter permanently.

    Other suitors

Inter are not the only club said to be interested in signing Lukaku this summer.

He has been linked with a move to Juventus as a possible replacement for Dusan Vlahovic, should the Serbian depart Turin.

Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal are also thought to be in the mix and have offered the Belgium international a three-year contract worth a reported £26m per season.

So there is pressure on Inter to complete a deal, with Lukaku once again a wanted man, despite a very mixed campaign in 2022-23.

The striker missed most of the first half of the season with injury, punctuated with a disastrous 2022 World Cup with Belgium in which he looked far from his best.

Yet in the closing weeks he found form, with his last seven Serie A games seeing him score seven goals and assisting four more.

That spell no doubt played a major part in convincing Inter to buy Lukaku but it also ensured that they would have competition and that Chelsea could request a relatively high fee.

The trump card that Inter have when it comes to getting this deal done is that Lukaku loves the club.

Shortly after exiting the San Siro to join Chelsea in 2021, he revealed that he had not wanted to leave the Nerazzurri and that he hoped to one day return.

He said: “I want to say a big apology to the Inter fans because I think the way I left should have been different.

“I really hope in the depths of my heart to return to Inter, not at the end of my career, but at a still good level to hopefully win more.”

It may take some more time — and interest from elsewhere could complicate matters — but it looks as if Lukaku may get his wish to return to Inter permanently.

With Simone Inzaghi’s men favourites to win Serie A next season, he could also lift the silverware he craves.

Willian pays a visit to the Nottingham Forest training ground amid links

Ahead of a potential summer transfer, Willian paid a visit to the Nottingham Forest training ground.

The Brazilian winger’s contract with Fulham has expired, and he has been engaged in discussions with Forest regarding a move to the City Ground.

Willian toured the club’s facilities on Thursday, but an agreement has not yet been reached.

Fulham has also extended a contract offer to the 34-year-old following his impressive performances during the 2022-23 season.

The former Chelsea and Arsenal winger scored five times in 25 appearances as Marco Silva’s side enjoyed a top-half finish.

Forest made 30 signings last year in their first season back in the top tier but they are not expected to be as active this year.

They are targeting up to eight new arrivals as they aim to build on last year’s 16th-placed finish.

Martinez excited to be part of Barca, a club he often struggled with

Barcelona’s newly signed defender, Inigo Martinez, expressed his satisfaction in joining a team he has frequently struggled against. He made these remarks during his presentation on Thursday.

The 32-year-old Spanish center-back, who arrived on a free transfer from Athletic Bilbao last week, acknowledged the challenging encounters he has faced at Camp Nou against the Spanish champions.

“Honestly, I’ve suffered every time I’ve come to Camp Nou, there’s no game in which I’ve not ended up knackered,” Martinez told reporters at Barcelona’s training ground.

“The style of Barcelona takes you into their territory bit by bit, there are top quality players, whoever the opponent is pays a high price and feels it on the pitch.

“You end up looking at the scoreboard and the minutes aren’t passing, the game feels eternal.”

Martinez signed a deal with Barcelona until 2025 and said it was an easy choice, highlighting the appeal of working under coach Xavi Hernandez, despite the club’s financial situation.

  • West Ham’s plans stalls as Rice’s move delays says Moyes

West Ham’s plans stalls as Rice’s move delays says Moyes

Coach of West Ham, David Moyes, expressed his frustration over the prolonged transfer saga involving Declan Rice and Arsenal.

Moyes stated on Friday that he is unable to make any plans until the captain’s transfer is finalized.

A deal worth £105 million ($140 million) was agreed upon with Arsenal for the transfer of the English international midfielder ten days ago. However, Rice is still officially a West Ham player at the moment.

It is worth noting that Rice is not included in West Ham’s squad for their pre-season friendlies against Perth Glory and Tottenham Hotspur in Australia.

The Premier League season kicks off in a month.

“Until it’s done we can’t plan anything really,” Moyes told reporters in Perth ahead of West Ham’s friendly against Perth Glory on Saturday.

“Everybody knows the situation. We are expecting something to happen.”

Moyes remained coy over possible replacements for the influential Rice, who played a major part in West Ham’s Europa Conference League title win.

“I don’t think we can replace Declan exactly like for like, that is for sure,” he said.

“We will add to the squad. We won’t be giving any thoughts or any names or anything like that.”

With Rice and several other star players absent, West Ham boasts a youthful squad in Perth in the club’s first outing since their European triumph over Fiorentina.

“We’re still buzzing… there are fantastic memories that won’t fade away quickly.

But we’ve also moved on and preparing for the next round of games,” said Moyes, whose job was under threat last season with West Ham near the Premier League’s relegation zone.

“We don’t have all of our international players with us due to a late finish and international games so it’s a great opportunity for some young players and the players we have with us now.”

  • Steven Gerrard likely to struggle with language barrier at Al Ettifaq for a while

Steven Gerrard likely to struggle with language barrier at Al Ettifaq for a while

Ex Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has begun his new role as the manager of Saudi Arabian club Al Ettifaq.

After initially declining an offer in June, Gerrard accepted the position earlier this month.

While the opportunity is undoubtedly exciting for the 43-year-old, he faces a clear obstacle: the language barrier.

A video that went viral on Thursday showcased Gerrard’s struggle to effectively communicate his message to players during a training session.

Top football stars led by Cristiano Ronaldo have flocked to the Middle Eastern nation after receiving lucrative offers to play in the Saudi Pro League, and Gerrard is probably the first high-profile English coach or player to move to offer his services to the Saudi league.

In the video seen on Twitter, the former Rangers boss places the ball on the ground before asking, “Who wants it? Who wants it? Do you want it? Tell me then!”. After his player failed to respond to his instructions, he can be heard saying, “No communication.”

It is clear the former Aston Villa manager will need time to adjust to the demands of the league. He will need to move fast and pass on his ideas since the league kicks off next month. This is Gerrard’s third managerial stint. Al Ettifaq finished 7th last season with 37 points from 30 games, per Transfermarkt.

    Gerrard speaks Arabic in introduction

After the confirmation of his appointment earlier this month, the former England captain attempted to speak Arabic in his introductory video with Al Ettifaq fans.

In a selfie video, Gerrard sent a message to the club’s fans and spoke Arabic, with his message translated to: “I am Steven Gerrard. I am an Ettifaqi. See you soon.”

The video was met with hilarious reactions from football fans who made fun of his Scouse accent, which was audible in his message.

  • No unity, huge squad – Lampard explains second spell failure at Chelsea

No unity, huge squad – Lampard explains second spell failure at Chelsea

Frank Lampard has hinted that he may be keeping an eye on social media, acknowledging the discussions surrounding his coaching career, particularly his second tenure at Chelsea.

Following Graham Potter’s dismissal, Lampard returned to Chelsea in April as the interim manager until the season’s end. Fans expressed concerns about his reappointment, and it turns out their reservations were justified.

Unfortunately, the team’s performance declined, resulting in a disappointing 12th place finish in the league. Additionally, they were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals by Real Madrid.

The season concluded with just one victory in 11 matches, which was a 3-1 win over Bournemouth.

    Lampard explains second spell failure

Chelsea fans are some of the funniest in the world. Their initial thoughts about Lampard’s first spell made them put all blame on their legend, but if a team has remained the same under four managers, questions should be asked of the players.

“When I got there, I could just see the spirit and togetherness wasn’t there. It was nothing bad, it wasn’t bad to go through the week, but you have to train elite to be elite. You have to,” he said on Diary of a CEO Podcast.

”The biggest thing about it was the size of the squad. The motivation of players who you’re not going to not play… it’s like asking someone to do all the prep and then have someone else actually do the job.”

However, it is no longer Frank’s problem; it is Mauricio Pochettino‘s, and the Argentine already began downsizing the squad with a clear plan, as detailed by The Athletic.

    Lampard’s message to Mount

Sports Brief reported that Lampard sent a message to Mason Mount after the midfielder left Chelsea and joined rivals Manchester United, a decision which still angers the fans.

The 44-year-old gave the academy star his debut and admits he would have loved to see him continue at Chelsea, but has no doubt he will add something to the Red Devils.

  • Consider your options- Bayern Munich tells Sadio Mane

German power house, Bayern Munich has advised Senegalese superstar Sadio Mane to consider his options in the transfer market according to a report from BILD.

The report suggests that the club has made it clear to the two-time African player of the year that they do not have him in their plans for the upcoming season.

The report also mentioned that Mane had initially made the decision to stay at Bayern, but he and his management were taken by surprise with the news.

Currently, other reports indicate that Bayern is open to selling Mane for a transfer fee of approximately 20 million euros.

Mane joined the Bavarians in 2022 summer, signing a three-year deal. He has had an underwhelming season coupled with injuries.

In addition to his struggle to acclimatise with his new team, he had burst up with teammate Leroy Sane in April 2023 which landed him in the bad books in the dressing room.

  • Women’s game faces reckoning with boycott threats, and calls for equal pay

Women’s game faces reckoning with boycott threats, and calls for equal pay

As the ninth World Cup approaches, women’s soccer is experiencing a significant moment of introspection and change.

From the ongoing American campaign against abuse in professional leagues to French players demanding the removal of their coach and Canadian athletes threatening boycotts, the sport is undergoing a much-needed reckoning.

While certain issues are being actively resolved, others may linger, indicating that women’s soccer has reached a point where players are no longer willing to suffer in silence.

The era of remaining silent is now a thing of the past, as athletes increasingly find their voices and speak out against injustices within the sport.

“One hundred percent, I think it’s so prevalent,” said Jonas Baer-Hoffmann, the general secretary of global players union FIFPRO.

“I think it’s more prevalent than it’s ever been in any other sport on a global stage. I don’t think you’ve had this kind of co-ordinated – or uncoordinated – wave of speaking up, standing up, forcing change ever before.”

Speaking up has proved highly successful in some cases.

France will play in Australia and New Zealand with a clean slate under coach Herve Renard, who was hired to replace Corinne Diacre after key players refused to play under her.

Canada captain Christine Sinclair said last week the Olympic champions were “pretty darn close” to a labour agreement that will get them equal treatment with the men.

“It is fascinating to see how social change as a grassroots movement from the players, and from supporters who’ve been around the block for a long time in women’s football, forces the structural change that we’re now seeing at a pace that is rapid,” Baer-Hoffman told Reuters.

Just days before the Women’s World Cup kicks off July 20, however, some teams are still in turmoil.

Spain are without some of their most talented players after a 15-player mutiny unfolded in September over accusations of a toxic environment.

“It will really piss me off not to go to the World Cup,” Barcelona and Spain defender Mapi Leon told reporters in March.

    “But my values come first.”

Nigeria have considered boycotting their opening World Cup game over a pay row, while allegations of sexual abuse in the Zambia team set-up surfaced on social media last year and are the subject of investigations by the country’s FA and FIFA.

Baer-Hoffman said England are one of about a dozen teams who are still in negotiations around compensation and prize money, including the minimum $30,000 FIFA will pay each player.

“This generation of players who have grown the game, literally put the game on their backs and gotten it to the point where it’s at now, I think they’re just sick of struggling,” said FIFPRO’s Sarah Gregorius.

“They are the generation that needs to see that fight come to a close so that the ones that come after them will never have to know the struggle.”

The trailblazers in the struggle have been from the United States, where players last year called for an overhaul at the National Women’s Soccer League after a report found that abuse and sexual misconduct spanned multiple teams and coaches.

US Soccer, which failed to put in “basic measures” to safeguard players, according to the report, subsequently said it was introducing a more thorough vetting system for coaches and officials as part of reforms.

The US women also won the Arthur Ashe Award at the ESPYS on Wednesday for the courage they showed in their pay equity battle, settling a lawsuit for $24 million.

Veteran Alex Morgan said last week she and some of her team mates had received their first settlement check in the mail days earlier, which promoted newcomer Naomi Girma to joke that she did not get one.

“And I was like, ‘Be grateful you don’t. You just get equal,’” said Morgan.

While the governance battles rage on among other teams, players have forged strong bonds regardless of what country’s colours they wear, finding allies in each other.

“Obviously all of the teams are using their voices a lot more,” said Megan Rapinoe, who has helped the U.S. to two World Cup titles.

“Players are talking about it and even when they’re subjected to the kind of discrimination and unequal treatment, they’re still speaking out.”

Rapinoe was vocal in supporting Canada’s fight, and the U.S., England and Japan all wore purple wristbands and tape during games earlier in the year in support of that cause.

“It’s been years and years of groundwork and a united voice,” said Rebecca Sowden, who played for New Zealand and is the founder of Team Heroine, a women’s sport marketing and sponsorship consultancy.

“We’ve seen the power of a united voice when all these countries and all these players and all these stakeholders come together,” she added.

“I think that’s the way forward for women’s football, using the collective, using our unique traits, that real community vibe that women’s football experiences that we don’t see in men’s football.”

Man Utd on the brink of finalizing a deal for Onana

United have come back with a new offer of €50 million, along with the possibility of an additional €5 million in add-ons.

The player in question is a 27-year-old Cameroon international who previously played under United manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax.

The club has already reached an agreement on personal terms with the player.

Last season, the goalkeeper had an impressive performance for Inter, making 41 appearances across all competitions, including the Champions League final where they were defeated by Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Inter is looking to secure replacements for the goalkeeper position and has set their sights on Bayern Munich’s Yann Sommer and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Anatolji Trubin.

United have been in the market for a new goalkeeper all summer, with David de Gea out of contract and leaving Old Trafford after 12 years of service.

Not a very good start as Arsenal Gunners draw with Nurnberg in first pre-season friendly

In a 1-1 draw between Arsenal and Nurnberg, Bukayo Saka emerged as the standout performer.

Saka showcased his talent by scoring a fantastic goal, cutting in from the right wing and confidently slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

Folarin Balogun also came close to extending Arsenal’s lead, hitting the post with his effort.

During the match, Kai Havertz made his debut as a substitute in the second half.

Surprisingly, Nurnberg managed to mount a comeback and equalized with an unusual own goal.

Arsenal’s substitute goalkeeper, Karl Hein, played a loose pass from the edge of his own box. Jorginho, attempting to control the ball, inadvertently redirected it into his team’s net.

Balogun had another opportunity to put Arsenal ahead, but he once again missed from close range.

Saka was as effervescent as ever, looking every bit as sharp as he did in the 2022-23 season.

His substitution robbed Arsenal of their attacking flair, and he must be credited for disrupting the Nurnberg defence throughout.

It has to be Hein. The Estonia international was roundly terrible, directly contributing to the own goal and he continually flapped at the ball.

One shot from the edge of the box led to him failing to catch the ball and Nurnberg hitting the crossbar.

Musician-turned-coach Capasta details how he landed coaching role in Norway

Ghanaian musician, Capasta Ambandi, has revealed how he secured a coaching job with the Norwegian second division side, IK Junkeren.

During an interview on Angel TV, Capasta explained that after achieving various successes in Ghana and abroad, he recognized the opportunity to pursue his coaching dream overseas.

Determined to explore new opportunities, he took a chance and traveled to Norway in search of better prospects.

“I moved out of Ghana in 2020. After several trips outside, I managed to build my CV to travel anywhere I wanted to. Just as it is every player’s dream to play outside, it was also my dream to coach outside. I knew it would be difficult because of where I was coming from as a black man but I was focused,” he told Saddick Adams in an interview on Angel TV.

According to him, it took just one call to get land him a trial with a club in Norway and is grateful.

“There was a friend who said I should come to the field with him, I went there just to train them once they were 14 players. The next day it moved to 16 then 24,” he said.

He added, “After training them for one week, I travelled back to Ghana. After just three days, they called me to come back and signed the deal and become their coach.”

Capasta began his coaching career with the Lizzy Sports Academy where he was part of their technical team.

Capasta later got a FIFA coaching license and was made the under-12 head coach and soccer administrator at the Lizzy Sports Complex.

He led the Lizzy Sports team to win many international trophies which included 2 trophies in Denmark, 3 trophies in Sweden, 3 trophies in Norway, and 1 trophy in France.

  • Norway prepared for redemption at the upcoming World Cup – Striker Ada Hegerberg

Norway prepared for redemption at the upcoming World Cup – Striker Ada Hegerberg

Norway’s 28-year-old striker, Ada Hegerberg, has expressed her team’s readiness for redemption at the upcoming World Cup.

After a disappointing performance at the European Championships last year, which resulted in an embarrassing early elimination in the group stage, Norway is eager to bounce back.

Despite having talented attackers like Hegerberg, Caroline Graham Hansen from Barcelona, and Guro Reiten from Chelsea, Norway struggled to find the net in the previous tournament.

They only managed to score in a 4-1 victory over Northern Ireland, but were heavily defeated 8-0 by England and suffered a 1-0 loss to Austria, leading to their elimination.

Under the guidance of new coach Hege Riise, Hegerberg anticipates a stronger defensive performance and improved efficiency in front of goal from Norway in their Group A matches against co-hosts New Zealand, Switzerland, and the Philippines.

“I think the most important thing is to be tactically prepared, that each player knows their role very clearly … and that we use the qualities we have,” Hegerberg said in an online press conference from their training camp in Auckland on Thursday.

“We will have to be very disciplined in the way we want to play, defensively and offensively. Once again, it’s about being prepared, and clearly if we feel we’ve prepared well we will take that with us into the first game.”

Hegerberg, who won the Ballon d’Or in 2018 as the world’s best female player, said that Norway cannot be considered among the favourites, despite being one of the few nations to have won the Women’s World Cup in the past.

“We have to go into this with a strong collective feeling that we belong here, that we are in a position that we want to show a strong face to those that follow us, especially Norwegians, and really work very hard, nothing is for free,” Hegerberg explained.

With a friendly behind closed doors against Portugal to come on July 16th, the Norwegians have been using their time in camp to fine-tune things, and winger Reiten believes that things have improved since the disappointment of the Euros a year ago.

“We’ve all become one year older, we have a little more experience. Everyone has shown in their clubs that they have taken steps forward as football players,” Reiten said.

“We have our new coaching team and a slightly new way of playing, which is maybe a little more defensively focused, so over the last year we’ve shown that we’ve taken some steps and gotten good results against good nations,” she added.

Reiten may be among the big names in the squad, but she stressed that it will take the best effort of all 23 players if they are to succeed.

“Football is a team game, and what we are going to do here, we are going to do together,” she said.

Man Utd and Barcelona race for Sofyan Amrabat as he is bows out of Serie A side

Target for Manchester United and Barcelona, Sofyan Amrabat, has expressed his desire to leave Fiorentina this summer.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Amrabat has informed Fiorentina of his intention to pursue a new challenge, with interest also coming from Atletico Madrid.

Fiorentina is willing to let him go if their asking price of €35 million (£30 million) is met.

Amrabat has attracted significant interest, but he has made it clear that he is only interested in joining a Champions League club like Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, or Manchester United.

Other offers are reportedly not being considered.

Since joining Fiorentina in 2020, the Moroccan international has made 107 appearances for the Serie A club.

However, it was during the World Cup that he made a significant impact, as he helped Morocco reach the semi-finals in Qatar.

Amrabat’s future is likely to be settled before the end of the summer, given the amount of interest in the midfielder.

  • 2026 World Cup: Morocco gets favorable draw in the African qualifiers

2026 World Cup: Morocco gets favorable draw in the African qualifiers

Morocco, a team that reached the semi-finals of the World Cup, has been given a relatively straightforward path to the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, following the draw for the African qualifiers held in Abidjan.

In the qualifiers, the top team from each of the nine groups, which consist of six countries each, will secure automatic qualification for the World Cup.

The four best runners-up will advance to an African playoff stage, where the winners will then compete in the inter-confederation playoffs scheduled for March 2026.

This guarantees Africa nine spots in the expanded 48-team finals, with the possibility of a tenth team being added through the playoffs.

Morocco have been drawn with Zambia, Congo-Brazzaville, Tanzania, Niger and Eritrea, and will be heavy favourites to finish top of the pool.

They had a thrilling run to the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar last year, the first African side ever to make it to that stage of the global tournament, and finished in fourth place.

African champions Senegal face a tougher road with the Democratic Republic of Congo in their group and a potentially tricky away day in Mauritania. They also meet 2006 World Cup finalists Togo and the duo of Sudan and South Sudan.

Nigeria and South Africa may each be wincing at their draw after being paired together, along with Benin, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Lesotho. Nigeria and South Africa have a long-standing bitter rivalry and will not fancy facing each other.

There is also a mighty west African clash in Group I as Mali and Ghana meet. They must also play tricky Madagascar, Central African Republic, Comoros and Chad.

Tunisia have been to five of the last seven World Cups and will fancy their chances again with an easy looking draw. They meet Equatorial Guinea, Namibia, Malawi, Liberia and Sao Tome e Principe. There should be few alarms for them.

Algeria missed out on the 2022 finals in heartbreaking fashion with a last-gasp playoff loss to Cameroon, but will be confident of getting it right first time as they clash with Guinea, Uganda, Mozambique, Botswana and Somalia.

The first two match days in the groups will be played on November 13th-21st 2023 and the last two on October 6th-14th 2025. The African playoff stage is scheduled for November 10th-18th 2025.

    Africa World Cup qualifying groups:

Group A: Egypt, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Djibouti

Group B: Senegal, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritania, Togo, Sudan, South Sudan

Group C: Nigeria, South Africa, Benin, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Lesotho

Group D: Cameroon, Cape Verde, Angola, Libya, Eswatini, Mauritius

Group E: Morocco, Zambia, Congo, Tanzania, Niger, Eritrea

Group F: Ivory Coast, Gabon, Kenya, The Gambia, Burundi, Seychelles

Group G: Algeria, Guinea, Uganda, Mozambique, Botswana, Somalia

Group H: Tunisia, Equatorial Guinea, Namibia, Malawi, Liberia, Sao Tome e Principe

Group I: Mali, Ghana, Madagascar, Central African Republic, Comoros, Chad.

  • It’s a deception to think we can win AFCON, Black Stars is not ready – GFA Exco member

It’s a deception to think we can win AFCON, Black Stars is not ready – GFA Exco member

Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA),Tony Aubynn believes that the Black Stars are not currently prepared to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana, a four-time champion of the tournament, last lifted the continental trophy in 1982 during the event held in Libya. Since then, they have reached the finals on three occasions but were unable to secure victory.

They suffered penalty shootout defeats to Ivory Coast in 1992 and 2015 and were defeated 1-0 by Egypt in 2010.

In recent years, Ghana’s performance in AFCON has declined.

Despite previously making six consecutive semi-final appearances, they experienced disappointment by being eliminated in the round of 16 in the 2019 edition.

Their most recent AFCON campaign saw their worst-ever performance as they failed to advance beyond the group stage.

Tony Aubynn believes it is about time the nation admitted the team’s weaknesses and built on a long-term project.

According to him, it will be a dishonest target to aim to win the tournament anytime soon.

“We have talented players in Europe and in our local league but I wonder if we have a team.

“What we need to do as a country is to lower our expectations as Ghanaians and then build from the base.

“If we still believe we are good enough to beat Brazil or win Afcon at this level of our team, then we will be deceiving ourselves,” he told Akoma FM.

“If we win it’s fine but we need to build just as Senegal, Morocco and the rest have done in recent years now.

Reports from the Daily Record suggests that, Manchester City has turned down Paris Saint-Germain’s initial bid for Bernardo Silva.

However, it is stated that Silva himself has expressed a desire to move to France.

While there is reported interest from Saudi Arabia and Barcelona, Paris is believed to be Silva’s preferred destination.

PSG’s pursuit of Silva is being driven by Luis Campos, the club’s football advisor, who shares a close friendship with Silva after signing him for Monaco back in 2014.

Despite PSG’s interest, Manchester City remains optimistic about persuading Silva to remain at the club and is keen for him to extend his contract.

  • Sochaux suffer demotion after owners financial constraints

Sochaux suffer demotion after owners financial constraints

French football team, Sochaux, has been demoted from Ligue 2 to the third division due to the failure of their Chinese owners, the Nenking Group, to provide financial guarantees for the club’s continued participation in the second-tier league.

The DNCG, the organization responsible for monitoring clubs’ financial matters, had previously announced the administrative relegation of Sochaux despite their ninth-place finish in the league, which was 10 points above the relegation zone.

As one of the founding members of the French League, Sochaux appealed the decision, but the DNCG upheld their relegation earlier this week.

The club claimed to have significantly reduced the wage bill and transferred players to reduce costs, but they still required financial support from the Nenking Group to cover the projected deficit until June 30th, 2024.

Unfortunately, this support did not materialize, leading to their demotion.

“Given the situation in the Chinese property market, which deteriorated again in the second quarter of 2023, the Nenking Group was unable to generate sufficient cash to cover FC Sochaux-Montbeliard’s (FCSM) projected deficit,” the club said.

“So it was without this evidence of a bank transfer from China that FCSM appeared before the DNCG appeal committee… The latter confirmed their decision to be demoted to National 1.

“The management of FC Sochaux-Montbeliard shares the grief of all the club’s supporters and employees, and regrets the consequences of this situation.”

The club said they are now working to present a new budget that will allow them to play in the third tier next season.

The Nenking Group, a private conglomerate based in Southeast China’s Guangdong province, did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment or an explanation as to why they opted out of assisting the French club.

There was no mention of the news regarding Sochaux on the group’s official website or official social media accounts on Thursday.

Instead, the group still proudly lists its purchase of Sochaux on its “About us” page, saying that it bought the club in 2020 “to expand its reach in the European football field”.

The club was founded nearly a century ago by French automobile company Peugeot and they won the top division league title in the 1934–35 and 1937–38 seasons.

They also won the French League Cup in 2004 while their last major trophy came in 2007 when they won the Coupe de France, the country’s premier knockout cup competition.

Peugeot sold the club in 2015 when they were in the second tier and ownership has since changed hands from Ledus to the Nenking Group, who formally acquired the club in 2020.

At the time, the club’s newly-appointed Executive Director General Samuel Laurent said Nenking Group chairman Zhong Naixiong wanted to restore the club’s status as a top-tier team in “three or four years”.

Chinese football has been rocked by several similar incidents in recent years.

In 2021 reigning Chinese Super League (CSL) champions Jiangsu Suning were abruptly told by their owners, the Suning group that the club would cease operations.

Before that Guangzhou FC, formerly CSL heavyweights Guangzhou Evergrande, were hit hard by the impact of massive debts facing their owners, the Chinese property giant Evergrande.

  • FIFA to pay $209 million to clubs for its players participation in 2022 World Cup in Qatar

FIFA to pay $209 million to clubs for its players participation in 2022 World Cup in Qatar

FIFA has announced that it will distribute $209 million to clubs whose players participated in the previous year’s World Cup finals held in Qatar on Thursday.

A total of 440 clubs from 51 different countries will receive the payment for their players’ involvement in the tournament, which was won by Argentina.

Under this arrangement, FIFA will allocate a daily amount of $10,950 for each of the 837 footballers who competed in the World Cup, irrespective of the minutes they played on the field.

The total sum allocated per player will be divided and distributed among the club or clubs to which the player was registered in the two years leading up to the Qatar finals.

This payment represents an increase from the $8,530 per player that FIFA disbursed during the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

For Qatar, a total of 46 English clubs will be the largest recipients with a combined total of $37,713,297, followed by clubs from Spain, Germany, Italy and France.

Manchester City will be paid the most for a single club with a sum of $4,596,445 followed by Barcelona ($4,538,955) and Bayern Munich ($4,331,809).

Under the agreement signed earlier this year by FIFA and the European Club Association, $355 million will be distributed to clubs under the programme for the 2026 and 2030 editions of the World Cup.

Pulisic secures fresh start in Italy, as he completes a £17 million transfer from Chelsea to Milan

Star player of the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), Christian Pulisic has completed a transfer worth £17 million ($22 million) from Chelsea to AC Milan.

Pulisic successfully underwent a medical examination at his new club on Wednesday and subsequently signed a four-year contract that will keep him at San Siro until 2027, with an option to extend for another season.

Joining Milan, Pulisic follows in the footsteps of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who was signed from Chelsea for £15 million ($19 million) earlier this month.

Additionally, Pulisic reunites with former Chelsea teammates Olivier Giroud and Fikayo Tomori at his new club.

Pulisic was originally signed by Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund for £58 million ($75 million) in 2019 and made 146 appearances across various competitions for the London-based club, scoring 26 goals.

However, he struggled for form and fitness with Chelsea, and spent the majority of the 2022-23 campaign on the bench as the Blues slumped to their worst-ever Premier League finish.

Pulisic has now secured a fresh start with Milan, who will be expected to fight for the Serie A title again in 2023-24.

The winger could make his debut for the Rossoneri when they kick off their pre-season tour of the United States with a clash against Real Madrid on July 23.

  • Mere politics and empty talks -Ghanaian coach Jeff Ofori dismisses Kurt Okraku’s claims

Mere politics and empty talks -Ghanaian coach Jeff Ofori dismisses Kurt Okraku’s claims

Ghanaian youth coach based in Sweden, Jeff Ofori has played down the claims made by the President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, regarding his commitment to the development of colts football in Ghana.

In response to Okraku’s speech at the 29th Ordinary Congress of the Ghana Football Association, Jeff Ofori dismissed the promises made by Okraku to make significant investments in colts football.

In an interview, Ofori revealed how Ghana Football missed out on a substantial investment opportunity from a Swedish company due to the deliberate actions of individuals within the association.

Ofori explained that he had been working for more than five years to secure funding from a company called SupercoachApp for grassroots football development.

He explained that the company and officials of the FA held a series of meetings but after a meeting with Kurt Okraku and other FA officials in February 2022, the FA’s countenance with respect to the deal changed completely.

“The FA are not interested in developing grassroots football. What Kurt Okraku said at the congress is mere politics and nothing else. I’m saying this because I have made efforts to secure funding from Swedish company to invest in our grassroots football.

He explained that Supercoach is a multinational football development organization that seeks to drive the progress of football through modern technology.

In his lamentations, coach Ofori said that had the FA opened it doors Supercoach, Ghanaian juvenile clubs and coaches would have been exposed to technological facilities and innovations that would have aided in their work and ensure development of grassroots football.

“It took me five years to work on this deal and after the people finally agreed to come to Ghana, the FA people collapsed the deal.

They came here and we held meetings with the technical director and Kurt Okraku as well but the FA have been playing hardball since.

“I have lost the trust of the company because they feel I let them. They were really interested in helping develop grassroots football. They had budget of over $50,000 that they wanted to pump into our football but Kurt and his people were not interested.”

Coach Ofori believes that the turning point that triggered the collapse of the deal was when the Swedish firm disclosed that the amount involved was not going to be handed to the FA but rather, the company will work with the FA to ensure that the monies are spent judiciously and accounted for.

“They started dragging their feet when they realize that the money was not going to come to them directly. The company wanted to be deeply involved in the execution of the partnership so the FA people decided to pull back”, he said.

His comments come on the back of Kurt Okraku’s promise to support all 48 division one league clubs with GH₵80,000.

Speaking at the 29th Ordinary Congress of the Ghana Football Association, held at KNUST Great Hall in Kumasi on Monday, July 10, Kurt Okraku opines that, amid the many challenges confronting Ghana football, the association is doing its bid to ignite passion and create wealth for all.

According to Kurt Okraku, “Division One clubs will each now receive GHC 80,000 next season as incentives”, he said.

  • Bayern Munich considering Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong if Kyle Walker stays at Man City

Bayern Munich considering Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong if Kyle Walker stays at Man City

Bayern Munich is reportedly considering Bayer Leverkusen’s promising defender, Jeremie Frimpong, as an alternative option in their search for defensive reinforcement.

This comes amidst uncertainty surrounding the future of their primary transfer target, Kyle Walker, who currently plays for Manchester City.

The potential move signifies a strategic change for Bayern as they look to strengthen their backline for the upcoming season.

Bayer Leverkusen has recently set a price tag of 50 million euros for Frimpong, who has impressed as one of the standout defenders in the Bundesliga this season, attracting attention from several European clubs.

Jeremie Frimpong has demonstrated tremendous promise, and his future in football seems bright.

His current Bayer Leverkusen contract is set to expire in the summer of 2025, giving the team considerable influence over his future.

The full-back has provided eight goals and seven assists in the 33 Bundesliga games he has played this season, in addition to his defensive prowess.

Saudi side Al-Alhi prepares staggering bid for Man City’s Riyad Mahrez

Winger for Manchester City, Riyad Mahrezis reportedly a target for Al-Ahli. The Saudi club are reportedly preparing a £30 million ($39 million) bid for his services.

Mahrez still has two years remaining on his contract with Manchester City. Al-Ahli, a Saudi Arabian team, is believed to be willing to offer around £30 million for the 32-year-old player.

However, according to The Athletic, Mahrez is currently undecided about the potential deal, as he contemplates the offered wages of approximately £25 million per year ($32 million).

Moreover, City are said to be also mulling over the deal, and aren’t in a hurry to accept even if it would represent terrific value for money considering Mahrez’s age.

Much will depend on whether both the player and the club are eager to accept the deal. Mahrez is still a key player for City and Pep Guardiola.

The situation will continue to evolve over the coming weeks.

  • 2026 World Cup: Ghana to compete against Mali, Madagascar, and Comoros in the qualifiers

2026 World Cup: Ghana to compete against Mali, Madagascar, and Comoros in the qualifiers

The 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, has been drawn favourably for Ghana in their bid to qualify.

The qualifiers are set to start in November 2023, and the draw took place following the 45th Ordinary CAF General Assembly in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The opponent is Mali. The Black Stars were drawn against Mali, a team attempting to qualify for their first World Cup, despite the fact that they might have been matched up against tougher opponents like Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Senegal, or Nigeria because they were placed in Pot 2.

Madagascar, the Central African Republic, the Comoros, and Chad are also included in the group. Ghana are familiar with Madagascar and the Central African Republic, having played them in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Black Stars will also be seeking revenge against Comoros, who defeated them 3-2 in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon last year.

Ghana has a strong World Cup pedigree, having qualified for four of the last five tournaments.

However, their performance in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was disappointing as they failed to advance past the group stage, losing to Portugal and Uruguay while defeating South Korea.

Black Stars will be determined to secure qualification for the 2026 tournament and aim to impress Ghanaians as they did in 2010 when they reached the quarter-finals in South Africa.

  • CAF records 17% increase in revenues

CAF records 17% increase in revenues

At its 45th Ordinary General Assembly in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) reported a 17% year-on-year growth in commercial income, totaling $125.2 million.

Higher sponsorship and television rights were mainly responsible for this substantial $21.6 million increase.

The increase in income comes as CAF strives to make African football more competitive on a global scale. The organisation anticipates a more significant financial recovery in the upcoming months thanks to an increase in media rights and sponsorship opportunities.

However, CAF remains cautious about its spending as it continues its economic revival.

Prize money and tournament expenses saw a 26% increase, amounting to $78.9 million, reflecting CAF’s commitment to investing more in its competitions and making African football self-sustainable.

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe affirmed the organization’s dedication to CAF Competitions.

During the year, CAF resolved longstanding disputes with some partners through out-of-court settlements.

Additionally, the organization adhered to accounting standards provisions recommended by auditors, which were fully accounted for in the financial statements.

While CAF recorded an improved total comprehensive loss position of $15.7 million compared to the previous year, it remains focused on increasing the global popularity and stature of its competitions.

The upcoming 2023/2024 financial year is set to witness the delivery of various premier competitions, including the CAF Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup, CAF Super Cup, CAF Women’s Champions League, Futsal, and Africa Schools Program, with a projected budget of $110 million allocated for organization and prize money.

CAF’s development expenditure has also increased, with a focus on supporting member associations and zonal unions for football development.

Investment in women and youth competitions, referee capacity development, the implementation of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) at the zonal level, and strengthening governance and controls around funding are among the organization’s priorities.

Looking ahead, CAF is optimistic about its financial outlook for the 2022/2023 budget year, primarily driven by the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast in January 2024.

The flagship tournament is expected to provide a substantial boost to CAF’s financial resources.

Originally planned for 24 teams, the tournament will now commence on October 20. Infantino emphasized the significance of investing in African club football and called upon all stakeholders to actively contribute to its triumph.

“It will have eight great teams, which will be followed in the future with a bigger version. We have to invest in African club football as well as national team football.

“It is our responsibility, duty, and task, and with the work and contribution of all of us as a team, we will succeed,” said Infantino.

While the participating teams have not been officially confirmed by CAF, it is understood that the eight teams will include Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa, Petro Atletico from Angola, TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Al Ahly from Egypt, Horoya from Guinea, Wydad Casablanca from Morocco, Simba from Tanzania, and Esperance from Tunisia.

The African Football League will run alongside CAF’s Champions League and is not intended to replace it.

However, specific details about broadcasters, sponsors, and logistics are yet to be disclosed.

“We have recognised for many years that African football players have been among the best in the world, but we have to improve the appeal of African football, its commercial viability and its capacity to sustain itself,” CAF President Patrice Motsepe told delegates.

Ace sports journalist commends legalization of marijuana

Seasoned sports broadcaster, Dan Kwaku Yeboah, has welcomed Parliament’s decision to allow marijuana to be cultivated for industrial and medicinal purposes.

The Narcotics Control Commission Bill, 2023, which permits the growing of cannabis for industrial purposes, was successfully revised by the Ghanaian Parliament.

This change was made in response to the Supreme Court’s judgement in July 2022, which declared Section 43 of the bill unconstitutional because there was insufficient parliamentary discussion before it was signed into law.

Reacting to the move by Parliament on Peace FM, Dan Kweku Yeboah said “I just read in the papers that Ghana legalizes cultivation of weed… at least its a step forward.”

He joked that some weed peddlers feared the exportation of marijuana will lead to shortage.

The legalization of marijuana is intended for industrial purposes to obtain fiber or seed for medicinal use.

Together with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, the Italian manager is the most well-known player in Spanish football to have recently come under the tax authorities’ attention.

The Real Madrid manager was allegedly charged in 2014 with cheating the Spanish Treasury of €386,361 according to Football Espana.

His image rights at the time are what are covered by the monies.

The charge against Ancelotti will now be moved to the trial stage as the judge believes the Italian manager deliberately hid the money from the country’s tax authorities.

The incident is said to have happened during Ancelotti’s first spell in charge of Real Madrid between June 2013 and May 2015, in a tenure that lasted 693 days.

JordanHenderson has reportedly orally agreed to the move in principle and the contract, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The player has even spoken to manager Jurgen Klopp and the coach has given him the “green light” to make the move.

Henderson has a contract at Anfield until 2025 and Liverpool will demand a transfer fee for the player.

The two clubs will now work on the valuation of the player before he is given the go-ahead to fly to Saudi Arabia.

Liverpool have already drawn up Southampton’s Romeo Lavia as a possible replacement and are ready to submit a bid for the midfielder who is valued at £50 million ($63m).

Moreover, Fabinho has also been linked with a move to the Middle East as Al-Ittihad are reportedly preparing a £40m bid for the Brazilian.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Preliminary Draw: Bafana Bafana may face African powerhouses in group stages

Bafana Bafana will now shift their focus towards qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after successfully qualifying for the AFCON.

South Africa, who last participated in the tournament in 2010 as hosts, aims to secure one of the nine guaranteed spots for African teams in the upcoming World Cup to be held in Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

For CAF qualification, FIFA has announced a format comprising nine groups with six teams each.

The teams will compete in a home and away format, with the group winners earning direct qualification for the World Cup.

Additionally, the four best-ranked group runners-up will enter a play-off, where the winner will represent Africa in an inter-confederation play-off. This play-off involves teams from each confederation, except UEFA.

The victor of the inter-confederation play-off will secure a coveted spot in the World Cup.

    Bafana could face tough draw

As noted by Kick Off, Bafana are ranked outside the top nine countries on the continent, and therefore will be grouped alongside one of the top nine for qualification.

They could be grouped with either Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali or Cote d’Ivoire.

As part of the second tier of countries, they will avoid Burkina Faso, Ghana, Caper Verde, Guinea, Zambia, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

    Jordaan’s ultimatum to Broos

Sports Brief previously reported how Hugo Broos was tasked with taking Bafana Bafana to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.

He was part of the Super Eagles side that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and was also included in the squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Daily Post added.

Onazi joined Remo Stars in training

Atalanta rejects Utd’s ‘players to replace cash’ move in transfer deal for Rasmus Hojlund

    Manchester United have
expressed interest in Atalanta’s star forward, Rasmus Hojlund in their pursuit of a new striker.

However, their attempt to secure the player through a combination of cash and player exchange has been swiftly dismissed by the Serie A side.

Due to financial fair play (FFP) restrictions, Manchester United proposed an offer involving both monetary compensation and the inclusion of players, specifically Fred and Donny van de Beek.

Nevertheless, Atalanta has firmly rejected this proposal.

Atalanta’s stance is that they will only consider a cash deal for the 20-year-old Danish striker. According to The Athletic, the Italian club values Hojlund at €100 million (£85 million/$111 million).

Manchester United will need to reconsider their approach and meet Atalanta’s cash-only requirement to potentially secure the highly-rated forward.

FFP restrictions mean that United won’t meet Atalanta’s demands, and the idea of throwing players into the deal is to bring the cash payment down. United could move on to other targets should Atalanta refuse to budge.

United will try to find a way to break the stalemate with Atalanta, but with Hojlund only one year in to a four-year contract, the Italian side hold all the cards in negotiations.

Nonetheless, he also disclosed the mental health challenges he faced, which became so overwhelming that he contemplated retirement at the tender age of 24.

Alli’s interview offered a raw and sincere glimpse into the struggles he has encountered, both on and off the field, shedding light on the complexities and personal difficulties that have shaped his journey.

Some key areas he spoke about include, being addicted to sleeping pills to numb his mental health issues, being molested by his mom’s friend at age 6, smoking at age 7, started dealing drugs at age 8, being hung off a bridge at age 11, getting adopted at age 12, and living through betrayal by his parent.

Alli, who ended his loan spell at Besiktas abruptly due to an injury that required surgery, narrated how he landed in rehab for six weeks to fight his addiction to sleeping pills.

“I got addicted to sleeping tablets, it’s a problem not only I have. It’s going around more than people realise in football,” he said.

“Now is probably the right time to tell people. It’s tough to talk about it as it’s quite recent and something I’ve hid for a long time and I’m scared to talk about.

“When I came back from Turkey I came back and found out I needed an operation. I was in a bad place mentally. I decided to go to a modern rehab facility that deals with addiction and mental health and trauma. I felt it was time for me.

“You can’t be told to go there, you have to make the decision yourself. I was in a bad cycle. I was relying on things that were doing me harm. I was waking up every day, winning the fight going into training every day smiling – willing to show I was happy.

“There is a stigma around it and it’s something people don’t want to do. Going into rehab is scary but I could never have imagined how much I would get from it. I was in a bad place. A lot happened to me when I was younger that I couldn’t understand and I was doing stupid things that I blame myself for.

“Going there and learning about it, it was never really under my control. Understanding learning it has helped. I let go of some bad feelings I was holding which was slowing me down.”

On his best period as a footballer, Ali mentioned his time at Tottenham Hotspur under Mauricio Pochettino.

“Mauricio Pochettino was the best manager and I couldn’t have asked for a better manager at the time. I was in him and his team, you know, not just him. There was Jesus (Perez), Miguel (d’Agostino) and Tony (Jimenez).

They are amazing people and they’re so understanding, and it wasn’t like a footballer and a manager relationship. It was deeper than that, I felt.

“He was just so understanding of the decisions I was making, and he was guiding – like, he cared about me as a person before the football, which is what I needed at that time. And I think that’s important for young players.

“When you go somewhere it can be quite scary, I think. And I never had that fear of, you know, trying to prove myself in that sense, because I felt like he was giving me the platform to express myself the best I could and to be comfortable.

“I mean, players always used to say, ‘I want to be like that’ (fearless). I wasn’t fearless. I was just brave. But I think being brave, you feel the fear still, but you still do it. And I think that’s something that he allowed me to do.

“So yeah, I think (Pochettino) helped a lot in that period of my career, which is why it was tough for me when he left. Because, you know, then you [get] new managers, and it was hard for me to let anyone in at that point and to be open. And I felt like everything was just so fake.’

But a change in managerial at Tottenham with Jose Mourinho taking over and Alli struggling for playing time became a new weight to carry and propelled him to consider retirement.

“Probably the saddest moment for me, was when Mourinho was manager, I think I was 24. I remember there was one session, like one morning I woke up and I had to go to training – this is when he’d stopped playing me – and I was in a bad place,” he explained.

“I remember just looking in the mirror – I mean it sounds dramatic but I was literally staring in the mirror – and I was asking if I could retire now, at 24, doing the thing I love. For me, that was heartbreaking to even have had that thought at 24, to want to retire. That hurt me a lot, that was another thing that I had to carry.”

Mourinho during the period labeled Alli ‘lazy’ in a famous Amazon documentary, in which the player revealed that the manager later apologised but the session was not captured in the documentary.

“He called me lazy – that was the day after recovery day. A week later, he apologised to me for calling me lazy because he’d seen me actually train and play. But that wasn’t in the documentary, and no one spoke up about that because it was only me and him,” he said.

“In the team meeting, he called me lazy but then one on one, I think it was on the pitch, he apologised for it. And I didn’t think anything of it at the time because I know myself – I’m not lazy.

“What you see sometimes isn’t the way it really is. I think, especially now with social media and all these things, we can really portray something that isn’t real. After that, I think people definitely tried to use that, for some other decisions.

“I think other coaches maybe, for other reasons why I weren’t playing, they stuck to that – lazy one – because it was kind of an easy one to use. And the problem was probably more than that.”

Nonetheless, after spending six weeks in rehab, Alli feels ready to enjoy football again and stated that he is ready for a ‘big season’ with Everton.

‘Right now, it’s just about getting back on the pitch and showing him what I can do, and the talks were more about what I’ve done in terms of the rehab and how I’m feeling, which is a normal question for people to have, I think. So yeah, a lot of the talks so far have been about that, and then, yeah, I just need to get back fit which isn’t too long away.

‘I’m feeling good in that sense, probably another few weeks (away from returning from injury) and then get back playing and enjoying football which is what I want to do. So, I’m ready for a big season and I’m more prepared to deal with any challenge that comes with it.’

Real Madrid subjected to probes over unexplained financial deficits

Real Madrid, who recently secured the second spot in Deloitte’s Money League rankings, are facing the possibility of penalties due to undisclosed expenses worth €122 million in their latest financial statements.

Despite their formidable financial strength, the Spanish powerhouse is currently being investigated for potential irregularities in their financial reporting, which has raised concerns about their fiscal practices.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Real Madrid’s financial report shows a significant amount of €122 million categorized as “other operating expenses” that remains unexplained and unaccounted for.

Allegations have surfaced suggesting that a portion of these expenses may be related to repayments associated with a transaction involving private equity group Providence, which pertains to the sale of future marketing income.

Real Madrid is currently being questioned regarding whether these transactions should be categorized as debt rather than revenue.

As part of their agreement with Providence, the La Liga giants were granted the ability to temporarily halt borrowing in order to cover salary expenses.

Since entering into this agreement in 2017, Real Madrid has failed to provide evidence or confirmation regarding the repayment structure to Providence.

This lack of transparency raises concerns about compliance with UEFA’s financial regulations. Additionally, La Liga enforces stringent salary budgets that rely on club revenue, further adding to the uncertainty surrounding Real Madrid’s financial practices.

Jordan Spieth confirms investment in Leeds United with Justin Thomas as part of 49ers takeover

Renowned golfer, Jordan Spieth, the has disclosed that Rickie Fowler has withdrawn from the 49ers group, which was set to take over Leeds United, following the club’s relegation to the Championship.

Spieth and fellow golfing star Justin Thomas have made share purchases in the 49ers group, pending checks from the English Football League (EFL).

Despite Fowler’s decision, Spieth remains optimistic about the club’s future and is excited about the prospects ahead.

Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports News, Spieth said: “Relegation wasn’t ideal, but we got involved with the 49ers group about purchasing a larger share and getting in with them doing things so successfully as they do everywhere they’ve touched.

“We thought it would be a cool opportunity. It’s a big city, historic club, great venue in Elland Road, and once we looked into it we realised it could be really exciting.

“They (the 49ers) renegotiated after relegation and it was possibly a better deal – as long as they can get promoted (to Premier League) soon.

“I’m excited to have a team I’m emotionally invested in. I’ve watched the Premier League intently for a few years. Hopefully, we’ll be back very soon.”

Asked about the status of the deal, with the takeover still subject to EFL checks, Spieth said: “It’s done. Myself and Justin (Thomas) with a minority stake. The 49ers beat my Cowboys every year, so if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em!

“Rickie (Fowler) decided against it after relegation.”

Leeds United begin life back in the second tier at home on Sunday August 6, with Cardiff City travelling to Elland Road, live on Sky Sports.

Meanwhile, the Yorkshire derbies between Leeds and Huddersfield are scheduled for October 28 and March 2.

  • This is why Black Stars’ Kasim shunned Dortmund and Newcastle for TSG Hoffenheim

This is why Black Stars’ Kasim shunned Dortmund and Newcastle for TSG Hoffenheim

Ghanaian footballer Kasim Adams has revealed his reasons for choosing to join TSG Hoffenheim in the German Bundesliga, despite receiving interest from Borussia Dortmund in Germany and Newcastle United in England.

Kasim made a significant contribution to Young Boys’ success in winning the Swiss Super League during the 2017/18 season, marking the team’s first title in 32 years.

His impressive performances, including his participation in the UEFA Champions League, caught the attention of several clubs, including Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United.

The former Medeama SC player explained that he opted for Hoffenheim due to the club’s project and how well it aligned with his aspirations as a young player.

He believed that Hoffenheim offered the best fit for his career development at that stage.

“When I wanted to go to Hoffenheim from Young Boys. it was not only Hoffenheim who wanted me. I had Newcastle, I had Dortmund.

“I had Leverkusen as well but I chose to move to Hoffenheim because that was how I knew I could grow. Because I was in my early 20s so I still wanted to play more games to grow,” he told MX24.

“If I had moved to a bigger club, they would have seen me as a potential key player but they had lots of experienced players already. At Dortmund there was Hummels. I wanted to grow in Hoffenheim and it was good because they were playing the Champions League.

“I was aware the team had a project of buying young talented players that’s why I chose to go to Hoffenheim. Because I knew I could grow from there and then move through the process to the next step in my career,” he added.

Kasim was recently called to the Black Stars team for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Madagascar on Sunday, June 18, 2023, in Antananarivo.

However, he was an unused substitute as Ghana returned home with a point following a pulsating goalless draw against the Madagascans.

  • Lukaku agrees with the Blues to bow out of club this season

Contrary to the initial plan, Romelu Lukaku did not join Chelsea for pre-season on Wednesday.

The decision for the forward to stay away from the Chelsea squad was mutually agreed upon by Lukaku and the club.

Newly appointed manager Mauricio Pochettino had previously expressed his expectation for all returning players, including Lukaku, to visit his office for an introductory conversation.

It is widely acknowledged by all parties involved that the best course of action is for the Belgian striker to move on, with Lukaku expressing his preference for a move to Inter Milan despite interest from Saudi Arabia.

By delaying Lukaku’s return to London, Chelsea hopes to allow more time for the clubs to find a suitable solution.

Inter are yet to agree a deal with Chelsea but negotiations are ongoing. Chelsea leave for their US tour on 17 July and hope a deal can be reached before then.

Mauricio Pochettino will take charge of Chelsea for the first time when they start the 2023/24 Premier League season at home to Liverpool, live on Sky Sports, on Sunday August 13.

Chelsea then head to London rivals West Ham on August 19 before welcoming newly promoted Luton Town to Stamford Bridge on August 26.

Pochettino, who begins his role with the Blues on July 1, will visit his former club Tottenham on November 4 with the return fixture scheduled for February 24.

  • My most feared striker was Drogba -Yaya Toure admits

My most feared striker was Drogba -Yaya Toure admits

Fellow countryman of Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure, has bestowed high praise upon him, recognizing him as one of the greatest players to emerge from Africa.

Drogba’s illustrious career, predominantly with Chelsea, was marked by numerous achievements, particularly his ability to deliver in crucial moments, scoring vital goals in multiple finals, including Chelsea’s memorable UEFA Champions League victory in 2012.

In 2015, Drogba returned to Chelsea for a six-month loan spell under former manager Jose Mourinho, contributing to the team’s success by adding another Premier League title to his collection, making it a total of four during his initial eight-year tenure at Stamford Bridge.

Despite his eventual rise to prominence, Drogba faced challenges early on in his career.

Interestingly, he initially started as a right-back, and in case his football aspirations did not materialize, he had a backup plan as a registered accountant, as reported by Sports Brief.

    Toure names Drogba scariest opponent

The Ivorian striker was a nightmare for defenders with his strength, quick feet, and powerful shots, with even midfielders scared of his ability to turn games around.

His compatriot, Toure, has named Drogba the player he feared playing against the most during his career and for a reason he called the 44-year-old’s greatest strength.

“The guy who I always feared to play against the most was [Drogba]. For me, his header was stronger than his shot,” Toure said on BBC MOTD, via ESPN UK.

The two faced off a few times during Champions League games between Chelsea and Barcelona, as well as during their time in the Premier League.

Both share a combined six African Footballer of the Year awards between them, with the former Manchester City midfielder picking up four consecutively between 2011-2014, per Sky Sports.

The former Barcelona star also helped his country win an Africa Cup of Nations title in 2015, a feat Drogba and co. fell just short of in 2012.

    Bonucci names Drogba strongest opponent

Sports Brief also reported on Leonardo Bonucci naming Drogba his strongest opponent and one of the strikers that made him lose sleep ahead of games.

The pair faced each other a couple of times in the EPL, but the Italian mentioned a specific game between Juventus and Galatasaray he still thinks about.

  • West Ham upset over Arsenal’s delay in DeClan Rice transfer deal completion

West Ham upset over Arsenal’s delay in DeClan Rice transfer deal completion

West Ham is becoming increasingly frustrated with the ongoing delay in finalizing Declan Rice’s much-anticipated transfer to Arsenal.

Sky Sports has reported that the Hammers’ board is growing impatient as Arsenal has failed to provide the necessary legal documentation to complete the deal.

Although a substantial fee of £105 million ($132m) was agreed upon eight days ago, making it the most significant Premier League transfer of the summer thus far, the official announcement is still pending.

The hold-up seems to stem from a delay in Arsenal’s legal team preparing the required contracts.

Considering that the deal has been widely known in football circles for weeks, it is understandable that West Ham is eager to have the paperwork signed and sealed, allowing them to proceed with their own transfer business.

Rice has passed his medical and is currently on holiday in Portugal where he has been keeping himself in shape before he can finally join up with his new team-mates.

All parties will be hoping the lawyers get their act together in time for Rice to jump on the plane for Arsenal’s pre-season tour of the United States, which begins next week.

  • Prince Harry keeping mother’s legacy as he meets group of Princess Diana Award honorees

Prince Harry keeping mother’s legacy as he meets group of Princess Diana Award honorees

Prince Harry is carrying on the legacy of his late mother by actively participating in her work.

In a recent event, the 38-year-old Duke of Sussex pleasantly surprised a group of young people in California who were honored with the Diana Award, an organization dedicated to Princess Diana’s memory.

The event’s host, Vee Kativhu, recently shared a short film documenting the remarkable interactions that occurred during the Conversations for Change seminar. In her caption, she expressed the significance of the event and its impact on those involved.

“This conversation was so special and featured global Changemakers and also supporters of youth dotted around the room.”

“We touched on social media, social justice, inequality and how to combat burn out while advocating for the incredibly important topics that many of the youth around the table have dedicated their lives to,” she added on Instagram.

While the Conversations for Change meetings have taken place around the U.K. before, this was the first time the Diana Award had held an event in another country. Before the discussion kicked off in Los Angeles, Harry delighted four of this year’s Diana Award recipients by handing them their certificates.

“One of the things that struck me about even those four — even though they all do different things — was that their stories were really underpinned by the need for change,” Diana Award CEO Tessy Ojo, who was at the meeting, tells PEOPLE. “Driving change in inequality, particularly in education. This might be wanting to create better access to various forms of education. So it might be education around employability or education around or better healthcare.“

“Really incredibly, it amazes me how young these young people are and how big the issues they’re tackling are,” she adds.

“On one hand. I hugely applaud them,” Ojo continues. “I also recognize that it also demonstrates the need to pull them into networks much more so that they feel supported because they’re carrying huge, huge burdens.”

Harry’s California meeting took place as he and Prince William, 41, appeared in two separate videos for the annual Diana Awards in late June, just ahead of what would have been Diana’s 62nd birthday.

During this event, the princes appeared in two separate videos to honor 189 young changemakers from 31 countries.

On the day of the awards, William, 41, was introduced by former Diana Award Legacy Award winner Hannah Hodgson, who met the prince two years ago.

“The Prince of Wales praised her and the other young people for the “challenges they have overcome” to reach this point. “What unites them is their courage, compassion and a relentless dedication to improving the lives of others,” he said.

“Today, we recognize the power of all young people — the power to challenge the status quo, to confront injustice, and to inspire meaningful change.”

  • How France is paying you to fix your clothes and shoes

How France is paying you to fix your clothes and shoes

Do you have a pile of clothes and shoes that need some TLC? Don’t throw them away if you live in France, where the government will pay you a “repair bonus” to have them fixed in a new scheme aimed at cutting waste.

France wants to reduce the amount of textiles that end up in landfill every year. An estimated 700,000 tonnes of clothing is thrown away in France annually, two-thirds of which is wasted.

That’s why, from October, you will be able to claim back between €6 and €25 of the cost of mending clothes and shoes in workshops or at cobblers that have joined the scheme.

Bérangère Couillard, the secretary of state for ecology, announced the financial incentives during a visit to a responsible fashion hub in Paris.

The repair bonus will be paid from a €154m fund the government has set aside for the next five years, she said.

She invited all sewing workshops and shoemakers to join the scheme, which will be run by the eco-organisation Refashion. “The goal is to support those who carry out repairs,” Couillard said during the visit.

“This would encourage workshops and retailers to offer repair services with “the hope of recreating jobs”.

More than 100bn textiles – the terms covers clothing, shoes and household linen – are sold worldwide annually. In France, this amounts to about 10.5kgs a year for each person.

Refashion aims to encourage you not only to repair and reuse, but to reduce the amount of textiles you buy and to donate those you no longer want. It says about 56% of the donations can be used again and 32% can be recycled into something new.

The repair bonus scheme is part of a wider push by the French government, starting at the end of last year, to reform the textile industry, one of the most polluting on the planet, and to combat what is termed fast fashion.

Clothing and textile shops must also label items with the material used and the country where it was produced and manufactured.

Measures to encourage you to repair, reuse and recycle clothing follow a similar scheme offering bonuses to those who have household appliances repaired.

In 2020, France passed a law aimed at changing production methods and consumption habits in relation to household goods in order to cut down on waste, conserve natural resources and limit damage to biodiversity while addressing the climate crisis.

The legislation takes the form of a six-year plan that began with an education and information campaign outlining targets for the reduction, reuse and recycling of products, including targets for eliminating single-use plastics.

New measures are introduced under the legislation each year.

In 2022, public buildings including railway stations, hospitals and schools were required to install a water fountain, and at the beginning of this year restaurants with more than 20 seats and fast-food outlets were banned from using disposable cutlery, plates and cups for meals consumed on site.

France in 2016 banned supermarkets from destroying unsold food instead of donating it for redistribution.

Companies are now also required to be more open about the planned obsolescence of goods they produce and encourage the publication of a “repairability index” to detail the ease or difficulty with which a product could be mended.

Further restrictions on products containing microplastics, including cosmetics, shampoos, hair dyes and shower gels, and the use of plastic wrappings will come into effect in the next three years.

  • Ukraine should show more gratitude for western help, says UK defence chief

Ukraine should show more gratitude for western help, says UK defence chief

The UK defence chief, Ben Wallace, has hinted that Ukraine needs to say thank you more often to the west for its help after Volodymyr Zelensky’s frustration on Tuesday that his country had not been given a clear roadmap or criteria for joining Nato.

“People want to see a bit of gratitude,” Wallace said at a briefing on the sidelines of the Nato summit in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, when asked about the Ukrainian president’s comments that it was “absurd” for Kyiv to be told it would be welcome in the alliance but not given a date or exact conditions.

He said that sometimes the west had to give up its own weapons or persuade lawmakers in the US to support Ukraine. “You know, we’re not Amazon,” he said. “I told them that last year, when I drove 11 hours to be given a list.”

The US national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, also said that “the American people do deserve a degree of gratitude” for their willingness to provide Ukraine with military aid to defend itself against Russia’s aggression.

He said: “The United States of America has stepped up to provide an enormous amount of capacity to help ensure that Ukraine’s brave soldiers have the ammunition, air defence, the infantry, fighting vehicles, the mine clearing equipment and so much else to be able to effectively defend against Russia’s onslaught and to take territory back as well.”

Zelenskiy, speaking in Vilnius on Wednesday, said he understood that “Ukraine cannot join Nato when at war” but he wished there had been an invitation for Kyiv to join the alliance.

He welcomed the results of the Nato summit, especially the recognition that Ukraine did not need to follow a membership action plan, as well as the positive news on defence packages announced during the summit, but warned that, in the face of Russian invasion, this would be no substitute for eventual Nato membership.

Wallace said he understood Zelenskiy was speaking to his own public and that, despite his complaint on Tuesday, the final summit deal was a good one for Ukraine. He said there was an acceptance that “Ukraine belongs at Nato” and that amounted to an effective invitation for membership once the conflict had died down.

Britain, the US and global allies were due to unveil new security assurances for Ukraine on Wednesday. A declaration by the G7 industrialised countries “will set out how allies will support Ukraine over the coming years to end the war and deter and respond to any future attack”, a British government statement said.

In practice, this would come as bilateral agreements with Kyiv on long-term military and financial aid to keep Ukraine’s army and economy running. A White House official said the US would start such talks with Kyiv soon.

This was enough to draw a furious condemnation from the Kremlin, but not sufficient for Zelenskiy, who came to the Lithuanian capital seeking an invitation and clear timetable for Ukraine to join the alliance.

“The best guarantee for Ukraine is to be in Nato,” Zelenskiy said, expressing confidence that once the war is over Ukraine would be welcomed but warning that the G7 guarantees should be seen “not instead of Nato, but as security guarantees on our way to integration.”

Russia, which says Nato’s eastward expansion is an existential threat to its own security, swiftly lashed out at the military assistance.

Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy secretary of Russia’s powerful security council and an anti-western hawk, said increased military assistance to Ukraine from Nato was bringing a third world war a step closer.

Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said that the step “will make Europe much more dangerous” for years and years. “By giving security guarantees to Ukraine, they are undermining the security of the Russian Federation,” he said.

The Nato secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, was sympathetic to Zelenskiy’s position but stressed the importance of the progress he said Ukraine had made at the summit held under tight security on Nato’s eastern flank, 16 months after Russia’s all-out invasion of Ukraine.

Sullivan told CNN Ukraine could not join Nato right away because it would be “an inescapable fact” that the treaty’s mutual defence clause would mean that the allies would be immediately in a direct war with Russia.

While preparing for the expansion of their family, the tech entrepreneur, 40, and his wife Serena Williams, 41, are enjoying the summertime.

In an interview with PEOPLE regarding his recent collaboration with Sharpie, the soon-to-be father of two said that staying organised is assisting him in managing his hectic daily schedule while they wait for their newborn.

“We’ve got everything basically good to go,” he tells PEOPLE.

“I think I’ve I’ve definitely forgotten what it’s like to have a new one around, so it might be a rude awakening, maybe literally,” he says with a laugh. “But right now, we’re excited.”

The couple, parents to 4½-year-old daughter Olympia, are talking about baby names for their little one, whose sex they have yet to share.

Ohanian jokes, “After Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., Serena told me we cannot name the next kid Alexis, so I’m out of ideas.”

“Serena Williams Ohanian Jr., I guess it wouldn’t be a junior, or maybe it could be,” he muses. “I don’t know the rules — but we already broke the rules anyway. But yes, we’ve got some names bopping around if it’s a girl. I used ChatGPT to come up with some ideas too, so we’ll see where we go.”

When it comes to getting ready for the baby, Ohanian smiles at how “Olympia’s fired up.”

“No one’s more excited than her,” the proud dad shares. “She’s been wanting this. She’s been praying and asking about this for quite some time, so she’s very ready.”

When he’s not making and managing lists for different personal goals and professional to-dos, Ohanian uses the Sharpie S•Gel to write notes to his daughter, a budding reader.

“It’s been one of the best parts of her learning to read, that I get to surprise and delight her with some fun notes,” the proud dad shares. “Seeing her develop is so rewarding.

“You go from stringing together some letters, then you start doing some phonics, and it’s been really awesome seeing her just continue to level up. The notes get more fun too because I can write more and make it a little bit more interesting.”

For Ohanian, it’s important that his daughter knows that even when he’s busy, “I want her to really feel, not just to know, but to really feel that in some way I’m thinking about her every day, and these are fun little surprises that she seems to enjoy.”

The two also like to get messy with some daddy-daughter art time, with some guidance from YouTube.

“I put some plastic down so we don’t ruin the table with our Sharpies, and then we’ll do daddy-daughter drawing classes. I’ll fire up YouTube and we’ll go through a tutorial video together. She’ll get to pick whatever she wants to draw,” he shares.

“And it’s great, too, because if Mom is around, I’ll bring her in, and we’ve had grandparents join, aunties join, and whoever is at the house is obligated to get in on these drawing classes.”

For Ohanian and Williams, watching their daughter dabble and flourish in her different interests has been one of the most rewarding parts about their experience as parents.

“I do think she’s a mix of both creative and athletic right now. Mini golf was her thing a year or so ago, and then we got her proper golfing lessons, and she’s loved it,” he notes.

“On the creative side, she loves to dance. I guess dance is a little bit of both. Maybe that’s where she’ll land — somewhere in the creative end and athletic,” he says.

“Like any parent, we just want her to have fun, and we’re fortunate enough to be able to expose her to anything she could be interested in. It’s already been an interesting journey, seeing the stuff she’s into. We don’t want to limit that.”

In fact, he encourages it with cute little traditions like “challenging her to bring a big ‘why’ question every day to dinner.”

“She can ask, and if I don’t know the answer, we just look it up together, and we learn together. It’s fun for me,” he explains. “This really got fun in the last year and a half because of those parts of her development that we’ve unlocked.”

That said, dad life does present challenges, like seeing his daughter model some of the parts of his personality “I want her not to inherit.”

“But it’s also so interesting, I’ve become more reflective or introspective about the parts of me that I know I need to keep improving on because I actually see them in her,” he explains, also acknowledging all the “great things” he sees in his little girl.

“Don’t get me wrong, she’s awesome. But I feel the weight of the things I see, like when she gets locked into something, focused on something — it could be a screen, it could be a drawing, and nothing will distract her.”

As they prepare for the rest of the summer — where they’ll enjoy a baby shower and more quality time before their family of three becomes a family of four — Ohanian is feeling more confident than his first go around.

“We’re not first-time parents anymore. I feel more confident about having a newborn, all of those things that I just had zero confidence about with Olympia because I’d never even been around babies at that point in my life,” he explains. “We’re also obviously taking every precaution and doing everything we can to make sure everything goes smoothly for Serena.”

Prince George will turn 10 on July 22. As he approaches this milestone birthday, his parents, Kate Middleton and Prince William, are trying to ensure he has a typical upbringing while also putting him in position to one day succeed to the throne.

“It’s a massive balancing act,” one palace insider tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s cover story. “William and Kate are doing the right thing, protecting him so he can have as normal a childhood as possible, but he’s also dipping into duties as a future monarch.”

The insider adds, “He’s getting firsthand experience of what it’s like to be a royal and a monarch and firsthand experience of being a normal boy.”

Prince George’s unique role was apparent at King Charles’ coronation in May when he acted as one of his grandfather’s Pages of Honor during the crowning ceremony. While his younger siblings — Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5 — joined the congregation at Westminster Abbey, George became the youngest future king to play an official role in a coronation.

“He was terrific,” says a close family friend.

Prince William and Princess Kate, both 41, were aware of the pressure their eldest child would feel in the spotlight but felt he was ready for the task.

Adds a guest, “The service was emotional and family-oriented and very inclusive — and George played his part.”

But at home, Prince George has a very different upbringing than previous heirs to the throne, thanks in large part to his mother’s childhood outside the royal fold.

“Coming from a different background, she appreciates the
importance of having family time,” says a source close to the royal household. “She wasn’t brought up in that aristocratic setting where you see the children for a short time each day.”

Although they have the help of longtime nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, Princess Kate regularly drives her kids to school and makes sure she or Prince William is home most evenings for their return.

The family of five often gathers in the kitchen to make kid-friendly dinners and decorate cakes. “The princess asked if we make our own dough and said that they love making pizzas with their children,” says Pete Morris, whose Little Dragon Pizza Van the couple visited in Wales in April. And Kate recently used an official outing to ask The Great British Bake Off finalist Alice Fevronia for tips on making a smooth frosting.

The Princess of Wales has also talked about the family’s love of the outdoors. In a 2020 interview on the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast, Kate said she was happiest when “I’m with my family outside in the countryside, and we’re all filthy dirty.”

“Someone did ask me the other day, what would you want your children to remember about their childhood?” she continued. “

And I thought that was a really good question, because actually if you really think about that, is it that I’m sitting down trying to do their maths and spelling homework over the weekend?

“Or is it the fact that we’ve gone out and lit a bonfire and sat around trying to cook sausages that hasn’t worked because it’s too wet?”

Kate’s parents are also heavily involved in Prince George and his siblings’ lives, with Carole Middleton taking George to his favorite candy shop, Mable’s Paint Pot, and on other outings in Kate’s hometown of Bucklebury.
