  • Pochettino, the coach of bizzare rituals

Pochettino, the coach of bizzare rituals

On Monday, May 29, an official statement from Chelsea confirmed that Mauricio Pochettino would be the next Head Coach of the club

Taking over from Frank Lampard on July 1, Pochettino faces the daunting challenge of leading a team that has struggled despite its talented squad.

Reports suggest that Pochettino’s appointment has been well-received by the players, adding a positive note to what has been a turbulent season in West London since the departure of Thomas Tuchel.

While Pochettino brings proven Premier League experience, his lack of silverware has often been cited as a drawback in his coaching career.

That notwithstanding, his ability to turn young players into world beaters like what he did with Delle Alli and Harry Kane is unquestionable.

    What to expect from Pochettino

Chelsea’s faithful will be hoping he can mould the current team into something constructive. Todd Boehly has brought in a raft of young new players like Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez and Noni Madueke.

So, how does Pochettino operate? Forget his tactical acumen and man management; the Argentine coach has other rituals or superstitions that he holds dear to his heart. These will soon make their way to Stamford Bridge.

    1. Bowl of lemons

    The former Tottenham boss keeps a bowl of fresh lemons in his office to absorb negative energy. In a past interview with Talk SPORT in 2019, he said;

“So when people arrive with bad every, the energy is going to be in the lemon and not in myself. It’s like a sponge. It takes all the negativity.

“You can see it. It’s unbelievable! I change the lemons every ten days but sometimes every three or four days, they become ugly.”

    2. Walking on hot coal

This sounds like training for deep undercover military personnel, but surprise, Pochettino has in the past made his players walk over hot coal.

As the Sun reports, Pochettino brought in motivation expert Xesco Espar ahead of his Champions League final against Liverpool in Madrid for this daring exercise.

    3. Reading players’ aura

In the modern world, managers often use video replays and training sessions to judge how fit and ready a player is for a game.

While Pochettino uses that as well, he also has his own eye test where he can gauge the energy a player is radiating.

“I need data and tests, but what most influences my decisions is my ability to see if the right energy is flowing. I can foresee things that are going to happen and the associated consequences or which path each player is going to take. I can see it in their auras,” he said in his book Brave New World authored by Guillem Ballague.

    4. Breaking arrows with throats

It gets scarier or funnier, depending on your sense of humour. Pochettino also had his players attempt to snap arrowheads with their throats. Crazy, huh?

He did this with Spurs players before the Champions League final.

“When you see the arrow, you think ‘, It’s impossible; how am I going to break the arrow against my throat?’

“You say: ‘No, come on, I am going to kill myself.’ You put it with the sharp tip against your throat, but then, bang, you come forward and break the arrow.

“The most important thing is to learn how you can prepare your mind. To be focused. To be proactive. This is key in football.”

It is not known whether any player managed to break the arrowheads or if he had any volunteers, for that matter.

    5. Gacon test

Chelsea players should prepare for lots of running in the Pochettino era to test their endurance. In his book, the 51-year-old documented how he uses a proven gruelling run called the Gacon test.

“To start with, the players have 45 seconds to cover 150 metres, with 15 seconds to rest. In each subsequent 45-second rep, they have to run 6.25 metres further, with the intensity steadily increasing.”

    6. Specific washing powder

It gets crazier. Pochettino is said to have a specific washing powder that he wants the first-team jerseys to be washed with. He believes that the smell goes a long way in impacting good performances on the pitch.

    7. Records training sessions

It is unheard of for managers to record training and gym sessions. But in Piochettino’s world, it is different. His former player Danny Rose was astounded by this practice.

“He was the first manager I came across who records training, records gym sessions. There are no hiding places,” as quoted by the Telegraph.

    8. No fines for players

For a manager with very bizarre routines and mannerisms, it would come as a shock that he doesn’t necessarily believe in fining his wayward players.

He, however, still demands respect, especially for the club owners to be greeted with a firm handshake.

Chelsea fans will be hoping that these, coupled up with the massive investment done in the last transfer windows, will help catapult the club back to English royalty. Cause the bottom-half place they are set to finish in this year is not it.

As previously stated, Pochettino’s lack of trophies during his first spell in England with Tottenham Hotspur has always been a consideration when judging his suitability to manage a top club.

However, as Sports Brief reported, he might be the answer to a struggling Chelsea side in dire need of an uplift.

In Poch, Chelsea will get a manager who is willing to put everything on the line while attacking. Scoring goals has been the club’s main issue this season and looking at Pochettino’s previous teams, it was an area he addressed pretty well.

  • Sadio Mane finally speaks after Bundesliga win with Bayern Munich

Sadio Mane, a forward from Senegal, expressed his joy when Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga on the last day of the regular season.

Bayern needed to defeat Koln in order to increase their chances of Borussia Dortmund losing at home to Mainz on a momentous German league day.

Kingsley Coman gave the Bavarians the lead, but Dejan Ljubicic’s penalty-point conversion for the hosts tied the score with nine minutes still to play.

Sadio Mane was named Player of the Tournament as Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations this year

With Dortmund losing 2-1 in the other game, the Black and Yellows were set to be crowned champions. However, their dreams were dashed after Jamal Musiala netted a late winner for Bayern Munich, as reported by the BBC.

Mane, who has struggled for form in recent times, took to social media to share his delight and hopes to return next season in good form.

“What a season!! But Alhamdoulilah. Time to go rest and come back stronger,” the African Player of the Year said via Twitter.

Meanwhile, his future in Germany remains in doubt after reports claimed he would be sold at the end of the campaign.

Mane joined Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window from Liverpool but has been plagued by issues including injuries, form, and his bust-up with teammate, Leroy Sane.

    Bayern win 11th straight Bundesliga

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Dortmund gifted Bayern the Bundesliga title on a shocking final day in the German top flight, with a stunning collapse turning Borussia’s swan song into a dirge.

The Bavarians had taken an early lead through Kingsley Coman against Koln while Dortmund went 2-0 down in the first half versus Mainz, missing a penalty that would’ve tied the score at one apiece.

Dortmund entered the day at the top of the table and despite dominated the game, Mainz’s Andreas Hanche-Olsen and Karim Onisiwo’s goals were enough as the Black and Yellows stumbled to second.

Former Ajax star to face prosecution for smuggling over 1300kg narcotics worth €75M

Quincy Promes, the former Netherlands and Ajax Amsterdam forward, is facing legal action for his alleged participation in the smuggling of narcotics – cocaine.

He stands accused of trafficking the banned substance in two separate shipments with an estimated value of around 75 million euros. These shipments were intercepted in Antwerp in 2020.

According to NOS, Promes is due to appear for a pre-trial hearing on Monday, June 6.

The reports indicate that if he does not return to the Netherlands, the court proceedings can proceed in his absence, with a lawyer representing him as authorized.

Additionally, Quincy Promes is currently facing a charge of aggravated assault following the emergence of new evidence relating to a stabbing incident, per GOAL.

During a family event, it is alleged that Quincy Promes stabbed his cousin in the knee. Despite initially denying the accusations, Promes was reportedly captured confessing to the stabbing in a police wiretap.

He currently plies his trade in Russia with Spartak Moscow after stints with Dutch sides FC Twente and Ajax while also turning out for La Liga side Sevilla.

Promes suspected of trafficking, attempted murder

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes is the suspect of being involved in illicit substance trafficking racket and being a member of a criminal organization, as per De Telegraaf.

Promes was arrested in June 2020 for stabbing his cousin at a family party, and the police started to tap his phone after that.

The former Ajax winger and his family reportedly invested a huge amount to buy 400 kgs of c0caine that were intercepted by Belgian police in April 2020.

Tariq Lamptey recounts time with De Zerbi at Brighton and Europe qualification

Ghanaian defender, Tariq Lamptey, has shed light on the reasons behind the successful first season of Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton & Hove Albion.

De Zerbi, who previously coached Sassuolo, took over the reins from Graham Potter early in the season after Potter’s departure to Chelsea.

Under De Zerbi’s guidance, Brighton & Hove Albion achieved a historic feat by securing European qualification for the first time in their history, finishing in sixth place in the recently concluded campaign.

Tariq lamptey quits England for Ghana

Lamptey attributes the team’s transformation and success to the impact of De Zerbi, who has proven to be a skillful and influential manager.

His managerial prowess has made Brighton & Hove Albion a formidable side, enabling them to achieve remarkable results and earn their spot in European competition.

“I have worked under two great coaches [Potter] and [De Zerbi] now and we have played attractive football.

We always try to be on the front foot and score a lot of goals and it is entertaining to watch, to be honest,” he told Citi Sport, as quoted by GHANA Soccernet.

He said the tendency of Brighton to pass was something practiced during training and the Italian helped bring these techniques into games.

Under De Zerbi, the Seagulls have beaten some of the best sides in England, including Chelsea, Manchester United, and Liverpool.

Following their success this season, Brighton will now compete in the Europa League.

“Qualifying to play in Europe is amazing. It is the first time in the history of the club and it is very exciting to be part of this achievement,” Lamptey added.

The 22-year-old has been out of action since March after picking up an injury in the match against West Ham United, as reported by The Athletic.

Lamptey missed Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola and has been ruled out of the upcoming game against Madagascar in June.

    Lamptey explains Ghana switch

Previously, Sports Brief reported that ex-England youth international, Lamptey revealed why he switched nationalities to Black Stars.

Although he was born in England to Ghanaian parents and represented the country at a youth level, he changed to the west Africans in June last year.

Lamptey was eventually named in Ghana’s national squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, having made his debut against Brazil in September that year.

  • Guardiola reaches out to ‘hot cake’ Neymar via phone call

Guardiola reaches out to ‘hot cake’ Neymar via phone call

Pep Guardiola has allegedly reached out to Neymar via a phone call, suggesting that the Brazilian superstar is increasingly inclined to depart from Paris Saint-Germain in the upcoming season.

This conversation between Guardiola and Neymar comes shortly after news surfaced indicating that Manchester United could be among the clubs expressing interest in acquiring the winger’s services.

Neymar had an exceptional individual season in France before his involvement was hindered by an ankle injury, cutting short his further participation.

Neymar suffered ankle injury in 2023

PSG were then eliminated from the Champions League, provoking angry reactions from the club’s ultras, who have now demanded that Neymar and Lionel Messi leave the club.

While Messi will be a free agent, Neymar remains contracted until 2027 and it remains to be seen if the French side will want to cash in on him.

As L’Euipe reports, Guardiola checked in on the 31-year-old, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Manchester City will move in for him.

On paper, Manchester City are among the few clubs that can pay the astronomical wages of the former Barcelona man. The Mirror adds that Manchester United are also tempted by the possibility of bringing Neymar to Old Trafford.

How Guardiola could line up with Neymar

Despite his injury concerns, Neymar is a world-class player who would readily walk into any team.

Should Guardiola’s phone calls turn into a move to the Etihad, Sports Brief takes a look at how he would fit Guardiola’s plans. The Spanish manager has shown over the years that he is not afraid to tweak his system.

    1. As a left winger

This is the Brazilian’s position of strength. he has played a majority of his career from the left wing due to the lethal nature of his right foot. Jack Grealish has, however, made this position his own this season after initially struggling since joining from Aston Villa.

    2. As a secondary striker

Should Guardiola stick with Grealish on the left wing, Neymar could easily be moved into a secondary striker position.

It is the same position he adopted under Tite in the Brazil national team set up to allow for Vinicius Junior’s inclusion into the team.

Guardiola’s 3-2-4-1 formation would see him play alongside Kevin De Bruyne, just behind Erling Haaland and just in front of a double pivot midfield, usually of John Stones and Rodri, with Grealish and Bernardo Silva covering the flanks.

This could also solve the Ilkay Gundogan issue. The skipper is yet to agree a new deal with the club.

    3. As a number 10

This is highly unlikely given that Guardiola rarely uses the 4-2-3-1 formation to allow for the number 10 to play behind the striker. However, De Bruyne slightly dropping in deep could allow Neymar to play in between two wingers, just behind the main striker.

Guardiola could as easily come up with a different position for the talented forward. It would be exciting to see what he adds to the current Manchester City team should he join this summer.

    Neymar skips title celebrations

Sports Brief has also reported that Neymar elected not to travel to Strasbourg, where a solitary Lionel Messi goal secured a 1-1 draw for the Parisians and confirmed their second successive Ligue 1 title.

The Brazilian instead attended the showcase Formula 1 event in Monaco and was pictured alongside Hollywood superstars like Tom Holland, Orlando Bloom, and Michael Douglas – a decision that has not gone down well with the club.

Neymar’s absence from their title celebrations has reportedly been seen as an ‘act of provocation’ by the PSG hierarchy, as his exit this summer appears increasingly likely.

  • Paul Dogboe refutes mother and daughters sexual affairs allegations

Paul Dogboe refutes mother and daughters sexual affairs allegations

Paul Dogboe, the father and former trainer of Ghanaian boxer Isaac Dogboe, has strongly denied rumors suggesting that he engaged in a sexual relationship with a mother and her two daughters.

In an interview with Dornu’s Corner, Dogboe dismissed these claims as fake news and attributed them to a particular prophet who he believes is intentionally trying to ruin his marriage and his relationship with Isaac.

Furthermore, Dogboe expressed his frustration with the same prophet for spreading false information about him owing money to residents of Anyako.

He emphasized that these allegations are baseless and aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

“When you trust and they mess you up and they make people believe other things …. Even in my own village, I go out of that village clean, helping the village people so much so that I went back to England having nothing.

When I came back I had people going around saying that I owed people from the village.

“They go around using my name to extort money from people. They were saying that I’ve slept with a mother and her two daughters.

Can you imagine? This is just to mess me up. This is the kind of stuff that a man God says about me.

“If God talks to you, you should know that what you are saying is not true. It’s so bad. The lies you can tell to destroy somebody and his wife and kids,” he said.

Isaac and his dad and former manager

Paul Dogboe in the same interview implored his son to settle some debts he owed certain investors who contributed to his success in the sport.

“One of the fights, against Cesar Juarez, we had tickets that we obtained on credit for $40,000 from Islam, who usually provides us with complimentary tickets. I owed Jerere $5000, and I paid him.

I settled with Patrick as well, so there were small debts that I managed to clear. The only outstanding petty debt is $6,000 owed to Cephas,” Paul Dogboe revealed.

Paul continued, recounting the conversation he had with his son when Isaac informed him that he no longer wanted him to manage his career. “I said, ‘Okay, I have given you my blessing, but remember there are debts.’

I sent him a text listing all the debts, and he called John Marfo, promising to settle them. So, how is it that he then approached Uncle Mitch for a $70,000 loan?”

Paul Dogboe expressed his disappointment, stating, “There was a time he said he would send me money, but I told him I didn’t need it; he should pay off the debts instead. He gave me a thumbs-up, so I thought my son was being responsible and clearing his debts.”

A former British military officer, Paul revealed that he sometimes regrets leaving his well-paid job to devote himself to his son’s boxing career.

He further revealed that individuals he had brought in to assist with his son’s training spread falsehoods and encouraged Isaac Dogboe to distance himself from his father.

“You are surrounded by people whom I introduced you to, yet they harbored ill intentions towards me while I had nothing but good intentions for you.

I sacrificed my lucrative job to support you,” Paul expressed with a tinge of regret.

Paul Dogboe disclosed that his life has taken a downward spiral, resulting in the sale of his house in England following his divorce from Isaac’s mother. The proceeds, he says were used to secure another property with a new mortgage.

“I sold my house recently because I divorced my wife and we split the money and I put the money in another mortgage,” he stated.

  • Man United historic changes in decades old badge infuriates fans

Man United historic changes in decades old badge infuriates fans

Manchester United fans have been expressing their anger following a significant alteration to the club’s iconic badge.

It has been reported that the club’s upcoming third kit for the next season will showcase notable changes, particularly to the badge design, as Adidas, the kit designer, has chosen a minimalist approach.

According to The Sun, the new kit will feature a simplified representation of the devil instead of the traditional club crest, which has been a prominent symbol associated with Manchester United for many years.

    Man Utd badge

This modification has provoked a strong reaction from supporters of the club.

The publication adds that the kit will also be without the words ‘Manchester United’, the club’s badge layout or the ship, which have been mainstay features on United’s merchandise since the 1970s.

Leaked photos of the new design showed that the kit will only feature a devil, which is white in colour.

This has not gone down well with a majority of fans, who quickly took to social media to express their displeasure with the new design.

    @forealutd tweeted:

“We’re the Red Devils and our badge has a devil so why not?”

    @MTrenardSikse added:

“Not a fan of this at all.”

    @UTDTushar concluded:

    “This is insane tbh.”

    Man United badge changes

It is understood that Manchester United have not changed their badge since 1998, the year before they won the treble.

At the time, only the words football club were removed.

Meanwhile, there has been a raging debate if the ship on the United’s badge is an appropriate symbol as it risks the association with the slave trade.

However, according to The Athletic, the latest changes are purely a design choice made by Adidas, who are United’s kit makers.

Be that as it may, the Red Devils’ home and away kits will still feature the classic badge.

    Ten Hag speaks on Greenwood

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has broken his long silence on Mason Greenwood’s situation at Old Trafford.

Greenwood has not played for the Red Devils for more than 16 months following his suspension at the club after he was arrested and charged with assault.

  • Ghana places seventh in UN peacekeeping missions ranking

As of March this year, Ghana has been ranked seventh out of 122 contributing countries by the United Nations (UN) in terms of its involvement in peacekeeping efforts.

The global deployment of peacekeepers by the UN during this period reached a total of 76,712 individuals, consisting of 70,257 males and 6,455 females.

Among the 6,455 women deployed, Ghana accounted for 429 of them, positioning the country as the fourth highest contributor worldwide and the second highest in Africa when it comes to the deployment of women in peacekeeping operations.

In all, Ghana has so far deployed a total of 2,762 peacekeepers to various parts of the world.

    UN Peacekeeping Day

The UN Resident Coordinator, Charles Abani, made this known during a flagraising and wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the 75th International Day of UN Peacekeepers on the theme: “Peace begins with me: 75 years of UN Peacekeeping” in Accra yesterday.

The event was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration (MFARI) at the forecourt of the State House in Accra yesterday.

Men and women who have dedicated their lives to upholding peace and security around the world and also contributed to peacekeeping were rewarded for their various contributions.

Tributes were also paid to fallen heroes who died in the course of peacekeeping operations.

A symbolic tree planting exercise was held to honour fallen peacekeepers globally.

    Commendation

Mr Abani commended Ghana for her unwavering commitment since its first participation in the operations in the 1960s by providing soldiers, police officers and civilian personnel to numerous peacekeeping operations across the globe.

“Earlier this month, 700 Ghanaian peacekeepers, including 68 women were awarded the prestigious UN medal for their commitment to shaping a more peaceful and prosperous future for the peace of the world’s youngest nation,” he said.

Mr Abani also expressed appreciation to Captain Cecelia Erzuah who served as a peacekeeper with the UN Interim Security Forces in Abyei for receiving the 2022 UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award.

The award was for her advocacy role on gender equality and community engagement to address the peoples’ concerns.

According to Mr Abani, the dedication and sacrifices of peacekeepers could not be monetised due to the fact that some had paid a price with their lives in the course of peace under the UN flag.

“The legacy of these peacekeepers should inspire us to take action, recognising the fact that peace begins with you, me and us,” he added.

Mr Abani further said that attaining peace was the collective responsibility of everyone and not just the sole efforts of international organisations and governments.

He reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to continue to be a reliable partner in the agenda for peacekeeping.

    Support

The Deputy Minister of Defence, Kofi Amankwa-Manu, called for all hands on deck to support peacekeeping operations, provide the necessary resources and also empower peacekeepers with the tools they need to carry out their mission.

The Deputy Minister of the MFARI, Thomas Mbomba, said there was the need to strengthen partnership between the UN and regional and sub-regional bodies such as the AU and the European Union.

Instead of joining his teammates in Strasbourg, Neymar, the star player of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), chose not to travel, but joins Monaco Grand Prix.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi’s sole goal secured a 1-1 draw, ultimately securing PSG’s second consecutive Ligue 1 title.

Neymar, who has been a crucial contributor to PSG’s success this season, with 13 goals and 11 assists, has been dealing with an injury since March when he twisted his ankle.

However, despite Christophe Galtier telling reporters the forward’s absence was due to mobility issues, French outlet, L’Equipe have claimed his decision has not gone down well with the club.

Neymar’s absence from their title celebrations has reportedly been seen as an ‘act of provocation’ by the PSG hierarchy, as his exit this summer appears increasingly likely.

The Brazilian has come in for staunch criticism this campaign, with more vocal supporters going as far as to verbally abuse the player outside his own home in France.

    Neymar’s absences fuel transfer rumours

Yet another absence from team activity has led to increasing reports of a potential move away from the club, with rumours indicating Neymar could join the Premier League.

According to a report by 90 min , Chelsea, Newcastle, and Manchester United are touted as possible destinations, while Man City coach, Pep Guardiola has reportedly already been in contact with the Brazilian.

“Let’s hope Roma wins” – Madrid’s Ancelotti backs Mourinho to Win Europa League

Manager of Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti, has backed Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma ahead of their upcoming UEFA Europa League final against Sevilla on May 31.

Ancelotti, who was unable to successfully defend his Champions League crown this year after Madrid withdrew from the tournament in the semifinals, has staked his prediction on Mourinho’s ability to inspire Roma to their second consecutive European championship.

After edging off Feyenoord to win the inaugural UEFA Conference League last season, the Eternal City team will be hoping to add the Europa League, a trophy Mourinho has won on two times, to their trophy cabinet, according to Mirror.

Assessing the chances of Jose and his charges, Ancelotti highlighted the transformation Sevilla have experienced under Spanish gaffer José Luis Mendilibar.

“After a difficult start, Sevilla were able to climb out of the relegation zone. Now they’re well organized,” the 63-year-old said as quoted by Roma Press.

He continued: “Roma have the opportunity to go for the win. In addition, the Giallorossi have a very experienced coach when it comes to finals and who will play his part on the touchline. Let’s hope Roma wins.”

    Mourinho eyes Europa League success

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Roma manager Jose Mourinho has never lost a European final, while Sevilla are six from six in Europa League finals. Something has to give in Budapest on Wednesday.

Lampard cautions Pochettino after he landed Chelsea job

Frank Lampard has issued a strong warning to Mauricio Pochettino following the Argentine’s appointment as the new manager of Chelsea.

Pochettino was officially announced as the permanent boss on Monday, May 29, taking over from Graham Potter, who was sacked in February.

Lampard had taken the reins of the west London club in an interim capacity after Potter’s dismissal.

However, the legendary midfielder struggled to achieve positive results during his tenure, securing only one victory in the 12 matches he oversaw.

The disappointing run came to a close with a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United on the final day of the season.

According to Metro UK, the Stamford Bridge dwellers were only able to rack up just 44 points throughout the entire season, their lowest points tally in Premier League history.

    Lampard sends message to Pochettino

Lampard has now broken his silence following Pochettino’s appointment to the Chelsea role.

While the ex-Everton boss endorsed the appointment, he warned Pochettino that ‘there is a lot of work to be done’ at Chelsea.

The former England international further revealed that he believes standards have dropped in the dressing room.

“I’m a big fan of Pochettino as a manager, he’s a very good manager but it’s not about which individual it might be, it’s about getting the right, high-level of manager,” Lampard said via Football London.

“Pochettino’s history tells you he works with clubs at this sort of level. Then let them get to work with the players to try and create a solid identity in a team that can win more games. Those things are not always overnight things. We have to be careful with expectations a little bit,” he added.

    Chelsea to sign Felix permanently?

Sports Brief previously reported that Chelsea could sign Felix in a player-swap deal.

Felix was a mainstay figure during Graham Potter’s stint at the club, but has played a less prominent role since the arrival of Frank Lampard, who took charge as the caretaker boss after Potter was sacked.

Recent reports suggest Chelsea are keen to have Felix continue at the club beyond this summer.

  • Serve the needy, not the greedy – KKD on ex-gratia

Outspoken veteran journalist, Kwasi Kyei Darkwah, popularly known as KKD, has joined the ‘anti ex-gratia payment’ campaign.

Former President John Mahama’s promise to scrap the ex-gratia when given the presidential mantle again in 2024 has sparked several controversies among many, including the Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, who has challenged the ex-president to stop taking it ahead of the elections.

Speaking on Monday, 29th May during a JoyNews interview on the current state of Ghana’s economy and other matters, including Ghana’s IMF bailout, KKD jabbed the government to prioritize the needy, not the greedy.

    KKD

Pension schemes such as SSNIT and other insurance covers are enough to sustain the beneficiaries of the ex-gratia.

“Now I think ex-gratia should be scrapped We have SSNIT. If you pay into that, depending on your profession and position, you may go home with your full salary; some get less.

“So the people who are already in the highest positions and will go home with perhaps their full salary when they go on pension are the ones who are still looking for more.

“Let’s serve the needy, not the greedy, Ghana, listen; serve the needy, not the greedy,” the cultural icon fumed.

He took a swipe at “our elders” and some laws, including some provisions of Article 71, which provides ex-gratia for retired government officials.

“We have to question our elders. Not all our elders are brilliant, and we have to accept that now. From the days of slavery until now.

And some of them looked at the exigencies at the time and put certain things into law, but not all laws make sense.

“There was a time when slavery was in law, so are we going to say it was a good law?” he noted.

KKD called ex-gratia “a bad idea” and wants a complete abolishment of it, however, through right constitutional procedures.

“The ex-gratia idea is a bad idea if the people who are taking it would stand up and say, like the former president, Mahama is saying, you know, I will speak to my people and tell them if I’m going to give you an appointment, you must accept that you will not take ex-gratia, and then they would go through the court processes and parliament.

“We need to scrap it, and we need to do that lawfully.”

    Akufo-Addo

While the 1992 Constitution of Ghana does not explicitly mention the term “ex-gratia,” it has become a commonly used phrase to describe the retirement benefits provided to government employees who fall under the scope of Article 71 office holders in the constitution.

Article 71 office holders include the President, Vice President, Speaker of Parliament, Chief Justice, and Justices of the Supreme Court.

Additionally, it includes Members of Parliament (MPs), Ministers of State, political appointees, and certain public servants whose salaries are funded by the Consolidated Fund and who enjoy special constitutional privileges.

According to Article 71(1) and (2) of the Constitution, the determination of salaries and allowances for the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary, financed by the Consolidated Fund, is the responsibility of the President.

This is made based on the recommendations of a committee, consisting of no more than five individuals appointed by the President and acting upon the advice of the Council of State.

Robert Lewandowski, who switched from Bayern Munich to Barcelona, finished as La Liga’s top scorer in his first year in the Spanish top flight as he also propelled the Catalan giants to the league title.

The Polish marksman finished as Europe’s top scorer last season when he scored 35 goals for Bayern Munich to win the Golden Shoe in 2022.

Sports Brief, alongside Goal, has revealed the top ten goal-scorers in Europe’s top five leagues following the conclusion of the 2022/23 football season.

    1. Erling Haaland, Manchester City

    36 goals

Haaland reigned over England in his first season in the Premier League, netting 36 league goals for eventual champions, Manchester City.

The Norwegian forward looks certain to overthrow Lewandowski to become the 2023 Golden Shoe winner. No marksman in Europe’s top five leagues could get close to his goal tally.

Haaland boasts power and pace in abundance, and one of the most sought-after talents on the planet did not disappoint when bursting out of the blocks for the Premier League champions.

    2. Harry Kane, Tottenham Hotspur

    30 goals

    Harry Kane

Kane, who has over 180 Premier League goals to his name, was six goals shy of Haaland’s mark in the EPL, but second among the top scorers in Europe’s top five leagues.

    3. Kylian Mbappe, Paris Saint-Germain

    28 goals

Kylian Mbappe was voted as the best player in Ligue 1 for the 2022/23 season, beating the likes of Lionel Messi to the prestigious award in France.

    4. Alexandre Lacazette, Lyon

Former Arsenal talisman, Alexandre Lacazette is back to his best since transferring back to his boyhood club, Lyon last summer.

    Troyes Lyon

The French forward scored a total of 27 goals in Ligue 1, although his effort was not good enough to help Lyon secure a European spot for next season.

    5. Victor Osimhen, Napoli

    25 goals

Napoli would be nowhere without Victor Osimhen’s goals this season.

The Nigerian forward powered the Naples club to their first Serie A title in 33 years, after he netted 25 goals to become the league’s top scorer this season.

Victor Osimhen gestures during Napoli’s 1-1 draw against Udinese.

Osimhen also broke numerous records on the way to becoming the goal king in Italy, after eclipsing George Weah’s all-time goal-scoring record in Serie A and surpassing Samuel Eto’o’s highest goal tally by an African in the Italian top flight.

    6. Jonathan David, Lille

    24 goals

Lille certainly know how to produce top goal-scorers in Europe. Jonathan David has become the hitman for the Ligue 1 side this campaign, with the Canadian forward netting an impressive 24 goals to see his stock rise.

    7. Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona

    Robert Lewandoski

Lewandowski again showed why he is one of the most-feared strikers in the world, after he netted an impressive 23 goals in his first season in Spain.

His goals propelled Barcelona to their first La Liga title in three seasons, while he also finished as the top scorer in the division ahead of Karim Benzema.

    8. Lautaro Martinez, Inter Milan

    21 goals

Lautaro Martinez is one of the biggest reasons why Inter Milan are Coppa Italia champions and also in the final of the UEFA Champions League this season.

    10. Ivan Toney, Brentford

    Players with most goals, assists

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the most lethal players in Europe are superstars from PSG, Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Manchester City, both in scoring and setting up opportunities.

Some well-known names are among the footballers with the most goals and assists in European football this season, from the old guard to the upcoming stars of the next generation.

  • Track record of Chelsea’s new manager, Mauricio Pochettino

Track record of Chelsea’s new manager, Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has been named the new permanent manager of Chelsea, taking charge after a turbulent campaign that saw the club finish 12th in the Premier League standings. Pochettino, formerly the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, has been entrusted with the task of rejuvenating the Blues.

In light of this appointment, it is worth examining Pochettino’s managerial record.

    Espanyol (32.9% win rate)

Having finished his playing career with Espanyol, Pochettino was pressed into service to lead a struggling team in January 2009 and lifted them from the relegation zone to a mid-table finish – drawing with local rivals Barcelona in the Copa del Rey and beating them in LaLiga.

After retiring as a player, Pochettino began his managerial career at Espanyol in 2009.

Espanyol finished 11th, eighth and 14th in his three full seasons in charge, though the former Argentina defender left with them bottom of the table in November 2012 after a poor run of form and a dispute over financial restrictions.

    Southampton (38.3% win rate)

Taking over mid-season from the popular Nigel Adkins, Pochettino led Southampton to a 14th-placed finish in 2012-13 and an impressive eighth the following campaign.

Conducting press conferences via an interpreter throughout his spell on the south coast, Pochettino was nevertheless clearly able to get his message across to an over-achieving squad and position himself for higher-profile roles to come.

    Tottenham (54.3% win rate)

Pochettino’s five-year reign at Tottenham marked the most prolonged period of success and stability in their recent history, with the club finishing fifth, third, second, third and fourth and reaching finals of the Champions League and the League Cup.

Pochettino celebrates with players after victory

The Argentinian nurtured a Spurs squad that was the youngest in the Premier League when they ended as runners-up in 2016-17, containing a mix of domestic talents such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Eric Dier, and overseas players including Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min and Toby Alderweireld.

A club that had had 10 coaches in 12 years before Pochettino’s arrival in 2014 have cycled through Jose Mourinho, interim boss Ryan Mason (twice), Nuno Espirito Santo, Antonio Conte and caretaker Cristian Stellini in short order since his departure in November 2019.

    Paris Saint-Germain (65.5% win rate)

    Won 55, drew 15, lost 14;

Paris Saint-Germain, where Pochettino spent time as a player, brought him the first major trophies of his managerial career by winning the Coupe de France in 2020-21 and Ligue 1 in 2021-22.

However, his tenure was not deemed successful as a runners-up finish to Lille in 2020-21 meant PSG missed out on the Ligue 1 title for only the second time in nine seasons, and he failed to guide the capital club to the Champions League final.

    Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel

Pochettino was sacked last summer having won less than 66 per cent of matches in all competitions, whereas his predecessor Thomas Tuchel – who started this season as Chelsea boss – had a 75 per cent win rate across his two-and-a-half years in charge.

Nigeria’s Buhari honours Victor Osimhen before stepping down

As President Muhammadu Buhari concluded his tenure as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, one of the beneficiaries of his final actions is Victor Osimhen, the talented Napoli striker.

Osimhen played a pivotal role in Napoli’s remarkable achievement of winning their first Serie A title in 33 years under the guidance of Italian manager Luciano Spalletti.

This victory marks the third Scudetto triumph in the club’s history.

Osimhen’s exceptional contributions cannot be understated, having scored 25 goals in the league and notably securing the crucial goal that sealed the title for Napoli in a 1-1 draw against Udinese.

Victor Osimhen gestures during Napoli’s 1-1 draw against Udinese.

Furthermore, he is currently positioned to contend for the prestigious Golden Boot award.

President Buhari’s support and recognition of Osimhen’s accomplishments serve as a testament to the striker’s remarkable talent and his impact on Nigerian football. Osimhen’s success on the pitch has brought immense pride and joy to both Napoli fans and the Nigerian football community as a whole.

    Osimhen receives national honour

According to Cable Lifestyle, as part of the activities leading up to the change of government in his home country, Osimhen has been bestowed with a national honour – Member of The Order of Federal Republic (MFR).

Osimhen joins Davido, Temi on Buhari’s honour list

This was his recognition of his exemplary achievement in sports. Osimhen had previously won the FIFA U17 World Cup for Nigeria in 2017 – a tournament he was the golden boot winner with a record 10 goals in a junior World Cup.

    Osimhen loses iconic face mask

Sports Brief reported that Victor Osimhen misplaced his face mask while on international duty with Nigeria for the games against Guinea Bissau.

The striker failed to find the back of the net in both games and when he returned to Naples, he found out he was without the iconic mask.

He started wearing the mask after a head injury in November 2021 that forced him to miss the 2022 African Cup of Nations.

    Osimhen fumes at Spalletti

Sports Brief also reported that Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen fumed at Spalettiafter the manager substituted him in the 67th minute of the 3-1 victory over Inter Milan.

The manager appeared unfazed as the player was furious because he wanted to keep his golden boot aspirations intact – his closest competitor Lautaro Martinez was still on the pitch for Inter.

In a video shared on Twitter, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was seen in the audience at the concert at Montjuic Stadium and seemed to be trying to maintain a low profile.

The World Cup winner quickly discovered that was impossible when assembled Barcelona supporters recognised him sitting in the lower stands and started singing his name in unison.

Messi reportedly skipped the annual UNFP ceremony, which recognises the top players in Ligue 1, Ligue 2, and the D1 Arkema (women’s first division) to attend the concert, reports RMC Sport.

The Argentine genius was one of four PSG players nominated for the French league’s team of the year, along with award-winner Kylian Mbappe, Achraf Hakimi, and Nuno Mendes.

    Messi’s condition for Barcelona return

Meanwhile, Messi has requested Barcelona sign his fellow Argentina teammates, Angel Di Maria and Leandro Paredes, ahead of his potential return, Sportskeeda reports.

Both of these footballers played alongside their national captain at Paris Saint-Germain last season before joining Juventus at the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

With Juve likely to miss out on UEFA Champions League qualification for next season, Messi now wants Barcelona to sign the Argentines as one of his conditions for re-signing for the Catalan giants.

‘French Prince’ Mbappe wins Ligue 1 Player of the Year Award

Kylian Mbappe continued his remarkable dominance in Ligue 1 by clinching the Player of the Season award for the fourth consecutive time on Sunday night.

The 24-year-old football sensation has been in outstanding form, finding the back of the net 28 times in the league this season, and is well on his way to securing his fifth consecutive top scorer title in Ligue 1.

Mbappe beats Messi to win Ligue 1 player of the year award

In a prestigious ceremony held in Paris, Mbappe was rightfully recognized, triumphing over fellow nominees Lionel Messi and Lens’ dynamic duo Loïs Openda and Séko Fofana, as well as Lille’s prolific striker Jonathan David.

This achievement places the young Frenchman in a league of his own, surpassing the three-time winner Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who also achieved this feat during his time with Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappe’s exceptional talents and consistent performance have solidified his status as one of the most outstanding footballers of his generation, and his latest accolade only serves to reinforce his exceptional skill and impact on the French league.

“I want to thank all the players. Winning the league is a great honour for us,” Mbappe said on receiving his award, via PSG Chief.

    Mbappe poses with award

The French star also thanked Messi for his help during the season, plus PSG staff, management, and others working behind the scenes.

Mbappe, scorer of 40 goals this campaign, snubbed Real Madrid at the end of last season and signed a new three-year contract to stay with PSG.

His contract will run out next year unless he exercises an option to stay until 2025, as per transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano.

Asked about his future at the awards ceremony, Mbappe replied:

“There’s no more links about my future? I’m very happy here at PSG and with my choice to be part of this project. I will be here at PSG next season.”

PSG wrapped up the title with one game to spare after a 1-1 draw at Racing Strasbourg on Saturday.

    Other Ligue 1 award winners

Lens also had four players in the team of the season: Brice Samba, defender Kevin Danso, midfielder Seko Fofana, and striker Lois Openda – with Samba being named best goalkeeper.

PSG also had four players selected in the Ligue 1 top eleven: forwards Mbappe and Messi, plus full-backs Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi.

    Mbappe to announce PSG departure

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported that PSG and Messi could part ways at the end of the season after a falling-out, and Mbappe could be next to depart.

Former football agent, Francois Gallardo has claimed the French star is also nursing a desire to leave the Ligue 1 champions when the season ends.

Mbappe penned a three-year contract extension at the start of the season, but is said to be keen on quitting the club to join Real Madrid this summer.

I chose honesty over lies – Yaw Dabo addresses age controversy after viral Marca video

    Yaw Dabo, the Ghanaian actor
, has broken his silence regarding the age controversy surrounding him, which arose after his interview with Spanish media outlet Marca went viral.

During an appearance on Wontumi TV after his return from a European tour, Dabo addressed the reasons behind his claim of being 24 years old, seeking to clarify the situation.

“Yes, I am 24 years, that is my real age,” he said.

Dabo explained that during his visit to Europe, he was on a mission to seek support for his football academy thus it was important he spoke the truth.

    Yaw Dabo on Europe tour

According to the football administrator, he initially hesitated when asked about his age during the interview with Marca but decided to maintain honesty, considering the preference of Westerners for truth and loyalty.

“When the question was asked it came as a shock to me so I was a bit hesitant but I came back to answer, I wanted to change my age but I reconsidered it because I was there to get help for my club.”

Dabo explained “Some of these foreigners believe in truth and loyalty so I just mentioned that I am 24 years. The interviewer then said, ‘respect, respect’, and from there, we continued with the interview.”

The Ghanaian actor gained global attention after being interviewed in Spain following the UEFA Champions League semifinal first-leg game between Real Madrid and Manchester City.

During the interview with Marca, Dabo’s enthusiastic support for Real Madrid caught the journalist’s attention, leading to the question about his age. Dabo confidently stated that he is 24 years old.

“When I started delivering my thoughts, he was shocked and asked about my age because of the way I was expressing myself. That moment I realized I had to give my best. And of course, when you get the opportunity, you have to take it and I did that,” he pointed out.

    Yaw Dabo with Marca journalist

He further stated in another interview that his “viral video gave the Spanish media company the most views in 2023.”

While the interview generated significant buzz, Dabo has now shed light on the circumstances surrounding his response.

Age controversies are not unique to Yaw Dabo, as several celebrities including footballers and politicians have faced similar scrutiny.

Notable amongst them is the president-elect of Nigeria, Alhaji Ahmed Bola Tinubu who has been accused of massaging his age to be able to contest the recently-held nigerian elections.

However, the intensity of the speculation, in this case, is due to his stature and the fact that little is known about the actor’s origins and personal life.

  • Man City prepared to seize “once in a lifetime” treble opportunity

Man City prepared to seize “once in a lifetime” treble opportunity

Pep Guardiola is confident that his Man City squad is prepared to seize the opportunity and achieve a historic treble by winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.

Having secured their third consecutive league title with three games remaining, the English champions now have the FA Cup final against Manchester United and the Champions League final against Inter Milan next month.

In English football, only Manchester United’s class of 1998/99 has previously accomplished the treble.

Guardiola believes his team has the potential to join this elite group and etch their names in football history.

“Everybody knows what position we are in. It comes once in a lifetime,” Guardiola said on Friday.

“Once we are there, first of all you have to relax and enjoy and do your best, but no one can be sure we will be in that position again.

“They are ready. I see many details — how they come up on days off to make treatments, how many hours they stay to make the treatments, how players are individually concerned maybe they cannot play the FA Cup final and Champions League final.

“When you see that you don’t have to tell anything and do anything.”

Guardiola’s scrupulous attention to detail is often hailed as a key to his success.

But he said some time off after Sunday’s final league game away to Brentford is the best preparation for two huge matches.

“When I started, it was ‘I have to prepare the final. I have to make a lot of videos’. Now it’s completely the opposite,” said the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss, who has won 11 league titles in 14 seasons as a coach.

“We need to disconnect. Even our physios and doctors and cooks, they work incredibly hard in this period. They don’t have time off. They need to disconnect.

“Go with your families. If the sun is shining, play golf, do whatever you want and (have) quality (rest) to prepare for the finals. Arrive in the best conditions for the finals.”

Benzema, Vinicius others to miss Sevilla clash

Real Madrid is gearing up to face Sevilla this weekend at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium; however, they will be without key attacking options in the central position.

Marco Asensio, Mariano Diaz, Karim Benzema, and Vinicius Junior are all expected to be sidelined due to injuries.

Mariano and Asensio are dealing with muscular problems, while Benzema has stitches in his foot following a cut he sustained in a match against Rayo Vallecano.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti has also confirmed that Vinicius Junior is still struggling with a knee issue, which prevented him from participating in their recent midweek victory.

Ancelotti denied the Brazilian was being left out as a convenience, following the racial persecution he has suffered of late away from home.

“No, he doesn’t travel because he can’t play. His knee still bothers him. He can’t play, period,” Ancelotti said, via Football Espana.

Real Madrid are a point ahead of city rivals, Atletico Madrid in second place and that, along with professional pride, remain the only thing in play, Sports Mole cited.

Florentino Perez may also remind his charges that several millions in Euros are in play.

Sevilla, meanwhile, can still make seventh place and the Europa Conference League next season, but will have their attention firmly focused on next week’s Europa League final against Roma.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid paid special tribute to Vinicius Junior after the Brazilian forward faced racist abuse in the club’s previous La Liga game against Valencia.

Spend smart, “otherwise the money doesn’t work” – Ten Hag jabs Chelsea owners

Erik ten Hag has cautioned the prospective owners of Manchester United about the potential pitfalls of repeating the mistakes made by Chelsea during their ownership transition last summer.

At present, Manchester United is engaged in discussions regarding a possible takeover with their current owners, the Glazer family, who are considering options to either sell the entire club or share control.

    Erik Ten hag

The Americans have been under immense pressure from the fans to cede ownership of the club.

Anti-Glazer protests have been a common sight in recent seasons, with many feeling United has stalled in terms of development, as reported by ESPN.

But with new owners comes the risk of clubs losing sight of the bigger picture – if what has happened at Chelsea this season is anything to go by.

    Chelsea’s lacklustre season

Chelsea’s long-time owner, Roman Abramovich was forced to sell the club after Russia invaded Ukraine early last year. Todd Boehly’s Clearlake consortium won the bid to buy the club.

The American arrived with much promise, picking up from where the oligarch had left off and immediately pumping money into new signings.

However, the club overspent on some players, leaving them exposed in some areas, with the lack of strategy becoming clear as the season progressed.

The Blues are set to record their worst-ever finish in 29 years. Ten Hag is aware and concerned about such a scenario repeating itself in the Northwest.

“You have to do the right things. You can have money but have to spend it in a smart way, and you need to have a strategy behind it – otherwise, the money doesn’t work.

We are now in a good direction – but we can also learn from this season,” the Dutch manager said, as quoted by the Sun.

Ten Hag was speaking ahead of his side’s game against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

The Red Devils would go on to secure a point against Frank Lampard’s beleaguered Blues and secure their spot in Champions League football next season.

Netizens descend on Salah after disturbing statement following Man United’s victory over Chelsea

Following Manchester United‘s victory over Chelsea, effectively ending Liverpool’s chances of securing a Champions League spot, fans of the English Premier League have flocked to social media to respond to a post by Mohamed Salah.

In the match, Manchester United triumphed over Chelsea with a resounding 4-1 scoreline, propelling themselves into third place and securing the final UEFA Champions League spot for England.

This outcome occurred after Newcastle United had already confirmed their own spot with a draw against Leicester City earlier.

With just one game remaining, Liverpool finds themselves trailing fourth-placed Newcastle United by four points, making their chances of a Champions League finish increasingly slim.

Fans have taken to social media platforms to share their reactions and thoughts in response to a post made by Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian forward took to social media to establish his disappointment after failing to make it into Europe’s elite club competition.

“I’m totally devastated. There’s absolutely no excuse for this. We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed. We are Liverpool and qualifying to the competition is the bare minimum.

I am sorry but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post. We let you and ourselves down,” Salah wrote on Twitter.

His post drew several reactions from fans of rival clubs, with some trolling the Reds for missing the UEFA Champions League.

    Salah reacts to UCL failure

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Liverpool forward, Mohamed Salah released a worrying statement after his side failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

The Reds will have to play in the second-tier Europa League in the 2023-24 season, after Manchester United’s win over Chelsea on Thursday confirmed their place in the final Champions League spot.

This is certainly unfamiliar territory for Salah, as it is the first time Liverpool have failed to qualify for the Champions League since 2017.

  • Bayern and Sadio Mane relationship is “over, yes” – Lothar Matthaus

Bayern and Sadio Mane relationship is “over, yes” – Lothar Matthaus

Lothar Matthaus, the former German international, has expressed his belief that Sadio Mane’s tenure at Bayern Munich appears to be reaching its conclusion.

This assumption stems from the fact that the Senegalese player once again started the recent defeat against RB Leipzig from the bench.

    Sadio Mane

Mane’s relationship with the club took a downturn following a confrontation with teammate Leroy Sane in the dressing room, which occurred after Bayern’s loss to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League back in March.

Additionally, since returning from injury in February, the Senegalese forward has encountered struggles in terms of form, often being brought on as a substitute in most of the matches.

According to Matthaus, who was in Ghana early this week for the launch of his co-ownership of Accra Lions, stated Mane could leave at the end of the season.

“Bayern will let him go, yes. I think the relationship between Bayern Munich and Mane is over,” he told Super Sport TV.

“After the last game on Saturday, he was in in the last ten minutes and a young player came before him. I think the relationship was maybe a mistake. There were so many mistakes Bayern were making in the last 12 months.”

Matthaus also mentioned Mane having returned from an injury following the 2022 World Cup.

“This didn’t make him happy, didn’t make Bayern happy and he never performed like he did at Liverpool two years ago.”

Mane joined Bayern last summer after six successful seasons with Liverpool, where he won the Premier League, the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, and the League Cup.

However, he might end the season without a trophy after the Bavarians let their league crown slip away from them by losing to RB Leipzig last week, as reported by the BBC.

    Matthaus slams Bayern over Nagelsmann

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that World Cup winner and former Player of the Year, Matthaus blamed Bayern for recent woes and said it came down to poor decisions.

    Julian Nagelsmann

Earlier this year, the German giants fired manager, Julian Nagelsmann and replaced him with former Chelsea coach, Thomas Tuchel – a choice which has backfired.

Bayern Munich could end the season without a sniff of silverware, having been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League and the DFB-Pokal.

Two Ghanaian footballers apprehended in India on charges of gang rape

A young job seeker reportedly fell victim to an alleged sex racket orchestrated by a woman from New Town.

The victim claims that she was coerced into engaging in sexual activities with two Ghanaian footballers at a guest house in the city, where she was subjected to gang rape by the duo.

The New Town police responded to the woman’s complaint and subsequently arrested the two footballers and the woman involved.

According to the police, the woman in her late twenties was living alone in a rented flat in Gouranganagar, New Town, following her separation from her husband.

As she was unemployed, she approached her neighbor, Lisa Collins, for financial assistance. Collins offered her some work, leading to the unfortunate events that transpired.

According to the complaint, on May 16, Collins asked the woman to come with her for a job. “They reached a guest house in Picnic garden where the two Ghanaian footballers lived and she was forced to spend the night with them.

The woman complained the two men had sex with her on multiple occasions through the night against her wish and was let go only the next morning,” said an officer of Bidhannagar City Police.

Battered and bruised, the woman stayed at her rented accommodation for two days, before she gathered courage and strength to turn up at the New Town police station and lodge a complaint against Collins and the two footballers on Friday.

Acting on her complaint, New Town police first arrested Collins and then took her to the Tiljala address where the two footballers were arrested.

Christopher Nars (28) and Moses Zutah (24) are both residents of Ghana who came to India on student Visa and were hired as part time footballers for different clubs across the state in exchange of money.

Cops booked them under IPC sections 376 D (gangrape), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention).

If convicted the trio can face rigorous imprisonment for life. They were produced before a Barasat court on Sunday and were remanded in police custody.

(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault).

  • Lionel Messi is the new cast on popular Argentine TV series ‘Los Protectores’

Lionel Messi is the new cast on popular Argentine TV series ‘Los Protectores’

Lionel Messi has recently provided a glimpse into his potential future endeavors after retiring from professional football.

The renowned Argentine superstar is poised to make his acting debut, indicating his interest in the world of entertainment.

Having achieved immense success in football, including four UEFA Champions League titles and seven Ballon d’Or awards, the 35-year-old has left an indelible mark on the sport.

Reports from Sportskeeda suggest that Messi will be appearing in the second season of the popular Argentine TV series ‘Los Protectores.’

The show revolves around the struggles of three football agents who have faced financial ruin and are in desperate need of money.

This acting opportunity allows Messi to explore his talents beyond the realm of football.

The second season of ‘Los Protectores’ will premiere on June 25 and features Adrian Suar, Andres Parra, Gustavo Bermudez and Lionel Messi as the star actors in the TV series.

Messi, who guided Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy, is yet to disclose his next football club with his current deal with Paris Saint-Germain set to expire this summer.

Messi to Chelsea transfer gains momentum

Meanwhile, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has been given a last-gasp chance to sign Lionel Messi for the struggling Premier League club this summer.

Despite offers from all over the world, Messi wants to stay in Europe and win the Champions League again and the Blues will try to convince the 35-year-old to make the switch to Stamford Bridge.

While Chelsea will not be in the Champions League next season, owner Boehly will not be shy about splashing the cash, and a goal scorer is at the top of his wish list.

    Messi meets with Barcelona captains

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Barcelona players got a break from training last week following their La Liga Santander title triumph against RCD Espanyol and the subsequent bus parade.

Though two are set to depart, the three club captains, Sergio Busquets, Sergi Roberto, and Jordi Alba travelled to Paris, where they met with former teammate Lionel Messi.

The three Barcelona veterans met with their former teammate over dinner in Paris last week and many things, including their club futures, were discussed.

Chelsea revel in defeat “you’re nothing special, we lose every week” in United clash

Manchester United secured their spot in the Champions League for the upcoming season with a convincing victory over Chelsea on May 25. However, fans of rival teams did not respond positively to the news.

Chelsea entered the game after a 1-0 loss to Manchester City and having endured 15 defeats throughout the season, which left their supporters feeling pessimistic.

While facing the Manchester United fans, the opposing supporters taunted them with the chant: “You’re nothing special, we lose every week,” highlighting their team’s consistent struggles throughout the 2022/23 season.

United fans also showed their humour as well, as there were also chants from the home support that said something to the effect of ‘Super Franky Lampard’.

Chelsea have been in shambles this season, despite immense expenditure from new co-owner Todd Boehly, with Lampard becoming their third manager this season after the sackings of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter.

The Blues will certainly not be playing in Europe next season, with incoming boss, Mauricio Pochettino facing an uphill task of convincing some of the superstars to remain at Stamford Bridge.

    United make statement with win

As far as the game went, Casemiro opened the scoring for the Red Devils before Anthony Martial made it 2-0 deep into stoppage time in the first half.

Bruno Fernandes then converted a penalty in the 73rd minute after a foul from Wesley Fofana, as Marcus Rashford completed the rout minutes later after coming on from the bench, as reported by the BBC.

Chelsea could only muster a consolation goal from Joao Felix as the Blues suffered their eight defeat in 10 games.

The only worry in an otherwise fine night for United will be the injury to winger Antony, who left the pitch in tears after a dangerous challenge from Trevoh Chalobah.

    Salah blasts Liverpool over UCL

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported on Mohamed Salah’s scathing statement against Liverpool after his team failed to qualify for the Champions League.

This is the first time the Reds will not be in the top European competition since 2017, the same year the Egyptian ace joined the Merseyside team.

In a statement on his personal social media, Salah proclaimed there was ‘no excuse’ on Liverpool’s part for failing to be in the Premier League top four.

Madrid star dedicates winning goal to racially abused teammate Vinicius

In a powerful display of solidarity, Rodrygo Goes dedicated his dramatic last-minute winning goal against Rayo Vallecano to his teammate Vinicius Junior, who has been subjected to racial abuse and discrimination throughout the season.

Vinicius recently endured another distressing incident at Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium, prompting an overwhelming wave of support from the global football community.

The call for more stringent measures to combat racism in the sport, especially in Spain, has grown louder.

Demonstrating their unity, Real Madrid players took to the field at the Bernabeu wearing No. 20 jerseys, representing Vinicius’ squad number.

The match against Rayo Vallecano ended with a 2-1 victory for Madrid, amplifying the message of solidarity and the collective stance against racism.

In the said encounter, Rodrygo, who scored the late winner for Los Blancos, dedicated his goal to his compatriot.

“It was a goal for my brother, for Vini. We’re always together, we have experienced many things, and we have already won everything with this club. I’m always by his side till the end, he already knows that, and we will continue fighting against racism,” he said, as quoted by Madrid Zone.

Despite being cleared to play the Vallecano game after La Liga reversed his red card against Valencia, Vinicius was omitted from Carlo Ancelotti’s squad for the mid-week clash.

    Tebas apologises to Vinicius

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that La Liga president, Javier Tebas has realised he was wrong for criticising Vinicius Junior, after the Real Madrid forward voiced his frustrations in a tweet after being racially abused.

The La Liga chief faced heavy backlash from the football community after he appeared to slam Vini for ‘failing to inform himself properly’. This was after the forward posted a message outlining the abuse he regularly receives at stadiums across Spain.

Tebas has now tendered an apology to Vinicius, as he revealed he had no intentions of attacking the Brazilian forward.

Pepe advises Vinicius to mature and be respectful amid racist abuse

In a show of support and condemnation against racism, former Barcelona and Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has made his voice heard after Vinicius Junior, a talented young footballer, experienced racial abuse at the Mestalla Stadium during a recent La Liga match.

The incident, which occurred during Real Madrid’s game against Valencia, sparked chaos tainted by racial slurs.

Disturbingly, this incident marked the tenth reported case of racist abuse targeting the Brazilian forward during a La Liga match since 2021, as reported by CNN.

Pepe Reina’s response serves as a poignant reminder of the need to confront and eradicate racism from the beautiful game of football.

According to CNN, the racial incident on May 21 was the 10th reported incident of racist abuse aimed at the Brazilian forward during a La Liga match since 2021.

In a space of four days, the police have made seven arrests, prompting Spain’s Football Federation (RFEF) to initiate a fresh anti-racism campaign and impose a partial stadium closure at Valencia.

Additionally, La Liga officially advocated for the granting of sanctioning powers to enhance the fight against racism amid a global outpouring of support for Vini Jr.

However, veteran Spanish goalie, Pepe believes the 22-year-old is partly to be blamed for the spike in racist attacks he has suffered since 2021.

“Vinícius? The less you provoke the rival fans and the less you protest to the referee, the more respect you will have from everyone,” Pepe said, as quoted by Madrid Xtra.

    Pepe’s advice for Vinicius Jr

The 40-year-old also offered guidance to Vini, who has undeniably been Real Madrid’s standout player this season:

“He’s becoming one of the best in the world, but I think he must mature in behaviour and have more respect for his rivals.”

At the age of 40, Reina joins an esteemed group of footballers  who have amassed over a thousand career appearances, a list that includes renowned names such as Xavi Hernandez, Iker Casillas, and Roberto Carlos, This Is Anfield reports.

    Vini blasts La Liga

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Vini has lambasted La Liga authorities, after releasing a new statement citing the various times he has had to battle racist abuse in the league.

The 22-year-old Brazilian received sympathy from stakeholders around the globe when he was subjected to more racism during Real Madrid’s La Liga tie with Valencia on May 21.

Vini revealed he had even received death threats across various cities in Spain, also claiming the authorities in the European country had done nothing to address these issues.

Hot water, pepper and oil, you have your light soup – Nhyiraba Kojo shares prison experience

Musician and owner of NK City night club, Nhyiraba Kojo, has expressed his criticism of the quality of food being served to prisoners in the country.

He highlighted that instead of being provided with soup or stew, the inmates are given banku (a Ghanaian dish) along with hot water and oil.

According to him, the inmates have to grind their own pepper, add salt and spices, and mix it with the hot water and oil to create a light soup.

  • Haaland equals Thierry Henry’s record during Brighton, City game

Haaland equals Thierry Henry’s record during Brighton, City game

Erling Haaland, the rising star for Manchester City, kept up his remarkable Premier League form on Wednesday, May 24, when his team competed against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.

Pep Guardiola felt the necessity to choose a quality lineup for the EPL cracker even though the game had little relevance for City.

The match, according to The Guardian, concluded in a 1-1 draw with goals from Phil Foden and Julio Enciso for each team.

Haaland was also on target for the champions in what should have been the winner but saw his goal chalked off after a VAR review.

Foden opened the scoring for the visitors in the 25th minute of the clash before Enciso restored parity in the 38th minute with what would potentially be a goal-of-the-season contender.

    Haaland equals Thierry Henry’s record

Despite Haaland’s goal being ruled out, it was not all gloom and doom for the Norwegian star, whose contribution in the match saw him equal a record held by Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry.

The former Borussia Dortmund ace was responsible for City’s opener, scored by Foden as he set up the Englishman for the goal.

According to Squawka, this was Haaland’s 44th goal involvement in the Premier League, having previously scored 36 goals and bagged eight assists.

The tally is enough for him to match Henry’s, with the former Arsenal star setting the record during the 2002/03 campaign.

At the time, the Frenchman scored 24 goals and bagged an incredible 20 assists.

Haaland has an opportunity to break that record and set his own, with City still yet to play two matches.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Haaland was once again the center of attention during Man City’s Premier League trophy presentation.

The Norwegian was involved in a heartwarming moment with City fans, leaving an on-pitch interview to join supporters in dance.

Sky Sports had managed to get hold of the striker for an interview before he rushed away to celebrate with jubilant home supporters.

  • Rwandan genocide suspect apprehended in South Africa after two decades

Rwandan genocide suspect apprehended in South Africa after two decades

After years on the run, authorities say the most sought fugitive suspected of taking part in the 1994 Rwandan genocide has been captured in Paarl, South Africa.

According to a statement, Fulgence Kayishema was apprehended on Wednesday in a combined operation involving South African law enforcement and a UN team tasked with tracking down the remaining fugitives.

Kayishema initially disputed his identification when he was apprehended in the late afternoon, according to detectives. But by the end of the evening he told them: “I have been waiting a long time to be arrested.”

Investigators said he used multiple identities and forged documents to evade detection.

Kayishema allegedly orchestrated the killing of more than 2,000 Tutsi refugees – women, men, children and the elderly – at Nyange Catholic Church during the genocide. He has been on the run since 2001.

“Fulgence Kayishema was a fugitive for more than 20 years. His arrest ensures that he will finally face justice for his alleged crimes,” said Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz of the United Nations’ International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT).

“Genocide is the most serious crime known to humankind. The international community has committed to ensure that its perpetrators will be prosecuted and punished.

This arrest is a tangible demonstration that this commitment does not fade and that justice will be done, no matter how long it takes,” Brammertz said.

    Huge reward offered

In recent years, the IRMCT prosecutor has complained about the lack of cooperation from South African authorities and there have been a series of near misses capturing Kayishema. But on Thursday, Brammertz lauded the cooperation and support of the South African government.

The events in Nyanga, Rwanda, were one of the most brutal of the genocide, in which an estimated 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed over the period of 90 days.

The tribunal alleges that Kayishema directly participated in the “planning and execution of this massacre.” The indictment says he bought and distributed petrol to burn down the church while refugees were inside. Kayishema and others are also accused of using a bulldozer to collapse the church following the fire, while refugees were still inside.

The office of the IRMCT says the investigation spanned multiple countries across Africa and in other regions.

A reward of up to $5,000,000 was offered by the US War Crimes Rewards Program for information on Kayishema and the other fugitives wanted for perpetrating the Rwandan genocide.

Kayishema is due to be arraigned on Friday in a Cape Town court.

The Rwandan genocide saw Hutu militias and civilians alike murder vast numbers of members of the Tutsi ethnic minority: men, women and children, many of whom had been their neighbors before the conflict began.

The killings finally came to an end 100 days later, when Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) troops, led by Paul Kagame, defeated the Hutu rebels and took control of the country.

President of La Liga, Javier Tebas, has come to realise that he was wrong to criticise Vinicius Junior after the Real Madrid striker expressed his annoyance in a tweet after receiving racial epithets.

As Vini wrote a letter detailing the abuse he frequently experiences at stadiums throughout Spain, the La Liga president appeared to criticise the forward for “failing to inform oneself properly,” drawing harsh criticism from the football community.

Tebas has reportedly apologised to Vinicius after admitting he didn’t want to hit the Brazilian forward, according to Goal.

“I did not want to attack Vinicius, but if most people understood it that way, I need to apologise. It was not my intention I expressed myself badly, at a bad time.”

Tebas described Vini as an asset of Real Madrid and Spanish football, and said he wanted him to stay.

“I feel sorry for what happened, and that’s why we denounced it. La Liga takes care of Vinicius. And, if they misunderstood what happened [after his tweet], I have to apologise.”

La Liga has since taken action against Valencia since the incident, with the club fined and part of their stadium closed as repercussion for the racial abuse on the Real Madrid winger.

    Real Madrid stand by Vinicius

Meanwhile, Real Madrid paid special tribute to Vinicius Junior after the Brazilian forward faced racist abuse in the club’s previous La Liga game against Valencia.

The men’s and women’s teams, along with the basketball squad, showed solidarity for the 22-year-old by wearing his jersey number before their games on Wednesday.

FIFA president, Gianni Infantino has also publicly supported Vinicius, Valencia has condemned the racist abuse, and Real Madrid has filed a hate crime complaint with Spanish authorities.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the racism row engulfing Spanish football shows no sign of abating after a poster of the Real Madrid forward Vini was defaced on Wednesday.

An image of the Brazilian player on an advertisement for stadium tours at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu was torn while the culprit left the effigy of Karim Benzema untouched.

The 22-year-old Real Madrid winger was given his marching orders for slapping Hugo Duro after being manhandled by the Valencia player, sparking jeers from home supporters.

  • A guide to Finland University application process in 2023

A guide to Finland University application process in 2023

Known for its high-quality education system and strong emphasis on equality and innovation, Finland offers various scholarship opportunities for both domestic and international students

Like any other country, Finland requires you to follow a couple of steps in order to be accepted at one of its universities.

    1. Decide on a Finnish university for your studies

Here are some good Finnish universities we recommend considering:

    • Aalto University
    • University of Turku
    • University of Jyväskylä
    • LUT University
    • Metropolia University of Applied Sciences
    • University of Vaasa
    • Laurea University of Applied Sciences
    • Hanken School of Economics

    2. Prepare to apply

    • You should first know that Finland divided its academic institutions in:
    • UAS (Universities of Applied Sciences), that train professionals in response to labour market needs and conduct research and development, which support instruction and promotes regional development.
    • Regular universities, that conduct scientific research and provide instruction and postgraduate education based on it.
    • Finland is one of the European countries that offer free education, so you should check if you can opt out of paying. If your chosen university isn’t free or as cheap as you hoped, you can always search for a scholarship in Finland.
    • You can also check out the Studyportals Scholarship to get some help on financing your studies abroad.
    • You should also visit the international admission website of Finland and get all the details and information you need from there.

    3. How to apply for a Finnish Master’s degree?

When it comes to the applications process, students have multiple options:

    • apply on the official websites of universities
    • apply on the official websites of Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS)
    • apply through Studyinfo, the official website for Finnish applications

Each of Finland’s higher education institutions has an admission office ready to answer any questions if you stumble upon a problem. Usually, each university or UAS has its own criteria and list of admission documents, but there is common ground, especially for the general application criteria. For instance, you can choose one of these two types of forms:

    • Joint application
    • Separate application

Joint application means that you can apply for up to six study programmes with one application. You have to place the programmes in the order of your preference on the application form, but be careful, because this order is binding and you cannot change it after the application period has ended.

If you apply through the separate application, you apply directly to an institution’s study programme. Separate application forms are filled for each study programme or institution and there’s no limit to how many study programmes you can apply.

    4. Check the language requirements

English is indispensable for your serene life as an international student in Finland. Of course, you could study in Swedish or Finnish, but let’s be real here: nobody can actually speak only in consonants.

All jokes aside, if your mother tongue isn’t English, Swedish, or Finnish, you will need to take a language test. Usually, UAS can organise language tests for their prospective students, either written or in the form of an interview. Universities, on the other hand, will expect an English certificate directly.

The best part is that, if you have proof of education in a foreign language, you can submit that as proof of language proficiency. If you don’t, we recommend these tests, as they are universally recognised in Finland:

    • PTE Academic
    • IELTS Academic
    • TOEFL iBT
    • Duolingo (some universities accept Duolingo as well, but double check)

Also, Finland has its own National Certificate of Language Proficiency if other English tests take too long or are too expensive.

    5. Gather the required application documents

The documents required by a regular university in Finland differ from those required by a UAS.

Universities of Applied Sciences will require:

    • Copies of completed or soon-to-be completed qualifications documents
    • Official translations of all documents
    • Original diplomas and original official translations
    • Employment certificates
    • Applications for special arrangements for entrance examinations

Regular universities, on the other hand, will provide a comprehensive list of required documents once you start your online application.application

    6. Mind the university application deadlines

Finland’s universities and UAS don’t have an exact calendar; admissions for Master’s programmes are between early December and mid to late January. Also, UAS can extend their admission schedules until March.

Seeing how there’s no pattern, you should check the study programme’s website for a clearer calendar for when to apply.

Don’t forget to take into account that some Master’s degrees offer additional applications outside the main period.

Commonly, spring applications have the following deadlines:

    • end of January: Application period 1 (for Master’s degrees in English)
    • start of February: Required certificates must be submitted
    • mid-March: Application period 2 (for Master’s degrees in Finnish or Swedish)
    • mid-April: Required certificates must be submitted
    • end of June: Student selection results will be published
    • mid-July: Deadline for the acceptance of a study place
    • start of July – end of August: Supplementary application round
    • September: Studies start

Meanwhile, the autumn applications have these deadlines:

    • September: Application period ends
    • end of September: Required certificates must be submitted
    • November: Student selection results will be published
    • start of December: Deadline for the acceptance of a study place
    • mid-December: Acceptance from the wait-list ends
    • end of November – mid-December: Additional applications
    • January: Studies start

    7. Final steps after receiving your acceptance letter

Let’s assume you got your acceptance letter, in which case, congrats! Now go back online and research the Finnish residence permit, because you will need one for studies longer than 90 days. If they will be shorter than 3 months, you have to apply for a visa.

Don’t forget you can ask your UAS/regular university for help with accommodation or other student services. They are there to help you, so you can take advantage of that.

England remains open to Raheem Sterling – Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate made headlines by giving Eberechi Eze his first England call-up and ending Lewis Dunk’s absence from international duty, but Raheem Sterling was noticeably absent from the squad.

After starting the Euro 2024 qualification with victories over Italy and Ukraine, the focus now shifts to the upcoming matches against Malta and North Macedonia in June, which are expected to be relatively straightforward.

Sterling’s absence stands out the most for these games, as he concludes a challenging first season since his transfer from Manchester City to Chelsea, leaving him feeling frustrated.

The 28-year-old has not played for England since the World Cup quarter-final exit to France – when a burglary at home disrupted his preparations – as injury ruled him out of the March camp.

“I spoke with him a week or so ago – a general catch-up,” England boss Southgate said.

“He’s not happy physically with his condition, having been carrying a hamstring problem. He really wasn’t in consideration.

“So, we didn’t get to the point of whether he should be in or out. He doesn’t think he is operating at the level he needs.”

A representative for Sterling called it a “mutual decision” that allows the player to focus on “recuperating his body in preparation for the upcoming season”.

The 28-year-old is determined to play a key role for England next term and Southgate says he can get back into the fold ahead of next year’s finals, as can omitted Tottenham defender Eric Dier.

“As we’ve shown with Tyrone (Mings) coming back (this time) and other players like Trent (Alexander-Arnold) coming back in, the door is always open when players are playing well,” Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Eric and Raheem both have physical issues really at the moment that they’re dealing with, so there’s part of that is behind that decision as well.

“But there’s another year to go before the Euros and it’s possible for everybody to get in that squad.”

Mings, Alexander-Arnold, Callum Wilson and Sam Johnstone returned to the England squad as Southgate has largely stuck with the tried and tested for the Group C games, with Crystal Palace attacking midfielder Eze the only uncapped player named in the group.

The 24-year-old finally get his shot with England after an Achilles injury cost him a place in the provisional Euro 2020 squad.

“We have liked him for a long time,” Southgate said.

“He was very unfortunate just before the Euros. We were going to call him into a prep camp to have a look at him and he got a bad injury.

“I remember talking to Roy Hodgson about him then and Roy telling me he’d picked up an injury in training that day.

“I think he has finished the season really strongly, he can play in a couple of positions across that attacking line.

“He’s a goal threat, he’s got nice ability and bursts of speed to go past people and to take people out of the game with dribbling skills.

“We’re looking forward to seeing him a bit closer and everybody I speak to talks brilliantly about him as a person as well.”

Dunk has played for England but the Brighton captain has not been selected since winning his first cap against the United States in November 2018.

“Brighton’s football this year has been exceptional and Lewis Dunk and Levi Cowell have been a big part of that,” Southgate said.

“He’s shown great composure with the ball, he’s asked to defend very often one against one situations and he thoroughly deserves his call.”

The squad also includes Marcus Rashford, who missed March’s fixtures and last featured for England in a qualifier in the run to the last Euros.

“He’s a super player who’s had a really good season, so he’s an important player for us,” Southgate told talkSPORT.

“We’ve not been blessed with having him to be able to put in the team too often but we’re hoping that’s different. And we’re looking forward to seeing him again.”

There is no place for Ben White, who has not featured for England since leaving Qatar after the World Cup group stage due to personal reasons.

“I spoke with Ben before the camp in March,” Southgate added.

“But at the moment, we’ve got (Kieran) Trippier and (Kyle) Walker in that area of the pitch.

“He’s had a very good season, as have the whole Arsenal team, but he’s not ahead of those guys at the moment.”

  • Chelsea needs patience for recovery not knee jerk moves – Lampard

Chelsea needs patience for recovery not knee jerk moves – Lampard

Frank Lampard asserts that in order for Chelsea to establish a long-term vision for their future, the club needs to transcend football’s inclination towards reactionary decisions.

Under the ownership of Todd Boehly, Chelsea has dismissed two managers this season, marking their worst campaign in the Premier League era.

The team has recorded an all-time low in points and is on track for their first finish in the bottom half of the table since 1996.

    Co-owner of Chelsea, Todd Boehly

They are one of 11 top-flight clubs to have changed manager at least once this season, with themselves, Leeds and relegated Southampton having dispensed with two, as the average tenure for a Premier League coach has shrunk to just over 18 months.

Chelsea’s previously indifferent form has plummeted since Graham Potter was removed on April 2, with one win in 10 games in all competitions.

The team has failed to score in six of those matches following Potter’s sacking.

Lampard takes his team to face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Thursday looking for only his second win in his 10th game since taking charge, having lost seven of the previous nine.

With Mauricio Pochettino expected to be confirmed imminently as the manager for next season, the outgoing interim coach suggested a resistance to modern trends must prevail if Chelsea are to challenge once more.

“That stat (11 clubs having sacked their manager) says it, I presume it’s a record,” said Lampard. “There are understandable factors, the Premier League brand and what it means to teams to stay in there.

“The first person that receives the blame is the coach, if you understand that going into the job that’s probably a good thing.

“Or course there’s lots of other factors. You wonder how successful always it is to changes those things. It’s clear it’s become that kind of a job and a situation and there are many teams that are fighting with expectations that might not be exactly stable.

“We’re in a very reactionary world anyway. In years gone by the reaction to one, two, three defeats might have been different.

Now we have this explosion very quickly and you just have to understand it when you’re doing this job.”

The job of finding Potter’s permanent replacement has been carried out by co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, who themselves arrived at the club only during the last year.

Previously Boehly held the role of temporary sporting director and was hands-on in player recruitment and in the doomed appointment of former Brighton boss Potter.

Lampard said he had enjoyed working with Winstanley and Stewart and that the pair have created a working environment around the club to help his successor succeed.

The new manager’s first job will be trimming a bloated first-team squad before setting about making up a gap to the top four that could hit 30 points this campaign.

“The dialogue has been really good from the moment this opportunity came up for me,” Lampard said. “I’ve been able to get on well with them on a personal and professional level and it’s nice to have that close communication.

“Working in this job you understand when you don’t have communication on the footballing side, you miss it. With both of them, Paul and Lawrence, I’ve had that in their own ways and that’s been a good thing and I appreciate that.

Interim manager of Chelsea, Frank Lampard

“Their big job is to bring Chelsea back to where we want to get it to. The responsibility isn’t all theirs but they play an important role in it. I’ve been impressed by how our interactions have been and I wish them well going forward.

“There’s a real alignment of thinking through (successful clubs). Where we are at the minute, that would be the work process of trying to see where are we aligned and where do we want to get to and what does it look like? There’s a lot of work in that and in Paul and Laurence we have good people to do that.

“It’s hard in the modern world because everything’s very reactionary. If you want to go in a certain direction and you don’t get any joy for a while, people react to that. For Chelsea it has to be a longer picture than that to get us a bit more of a process. People have to stick with that along the way.”

  • Mbappe’s transfer decision puts PSG in a difficult position as Neymar’s feud resurfaces

Mbappe’s transfer decision puts PSG in a difficult position as Neymar’s feud resurfaces

Kylian Mbappe has allegedly decided not to go ahead with the one-year extension option in his current Paris Saint-Germain contract. As a result, he will become a free agent at the end of the upcoming summer.

Last May, the striker signed a new three-year contract with PSG, with the final year of the deal being subject to his decision for renewal.

Neymar says no competition between himself and Mbappe

He has long been linked with an exit from the Parc des Princes, with Real Madrid heavily referenced, despite penning that deal.

Mbappe previously refused to commit his future to PSG following suggestions of an exit.

“For now, a second World Cup,” the France international said in November, when quizzed over his alleged transfer request. “After that, I don’t know.”

It was not until March that he returned to the issue.

“I have just taken part in the viewing of the club’s renewal campaign for the 23/24 season.
At no time was I informed of the content of the interview with my interlocutor. It looked like a basic interview at a club marketing day. I disagree with this posted video.”

Also complicating the situation has also been the French striker’s reported feud with attacking teammate, Neymar Junior.

The superstars are said to have fallen out over the order of penalty-takers earlier this season in a Ligue 1 clash, with the Brazilian liking a series of posts which appeared to criticise and undermine the Frenchman.

L’Equipe reports the French star now has no desire of taking up his contract option through until 2025, meaning he will be out of contract next summer.

While tensions between him and the club are said to have calmed, Mbappe is keen on playing football elsewhere.

As outlined by L’Equipe earlier this month, Neymar’s Instagram account ‘liked’ a post which slammed his teammate, while his Twitter account meanwhile is said to have ‘liked’ a post suggesting he and Lionel Messi were happier when they played for Barcelona.

Last month, the striker criticised PSG’s season ticket renewal campaign which focused heavily on his input.

    Kylian Mbappe

It was the latest sign that there was an uncomfortable relationship between the two, with cracks starting to appear.

Taking to Instagram with a statement, Mbappe wrote:

“I have just taken part in the viewing of the club’s renewal campaign for the 23/24 season. At no time was I informed of the content of the interview with my interlocutor. It looked like a basic interview at a club marketing day. I disagree with this posted video.”

Mbappe added that was why he was fighting for individual image rights.

“PSG is a big club and a big family, but it is certainly not Kylian Saint-Germain.”

Despite the controversy surrounding him this season, Mbappe has still managed to shine on the pitch.

The 24-year-old has 40 goals to his name in all competitions and managed to break the club’s goal-scoring record, overtaking former Manchester United striker, Edinson Cavani in the process.

    Manchester City targets PSG midfielder

Earlier Sports Brief reported that Manchester City are monitoring a PSG midfielder with an intention for a summer swoop.

Marco Veratti, who has spent the best part of his career at the French capital, appears a likely replacement for Ilkay Gundogan.

It remains to be seen if this transfer will materialise or if the Italian will commit to a new contract at the French capital.

Jordi Alba to part ways with Barcelona at end of season

After the end of the second season, Jordi Alba’s illustrious career with Barcelona will come to an end when the LaLiga giants announced they had reached an agreement to terminate his contract.

Since making his official debut against Real Sociedad in 2012, the 34-year-old has made 458 appearances for the club and won 19 major championships. His current contract was set to expire at the end of 2023–2024.

Barcelona said in a statement: “FC Barcelona would like to publicly express its gratitude to Alba for his professionalism, commitment and dedication, and his ever-positive and friendly relationship with all members of the Barca family, and wishes him every fortune in the future.

“Barca will always be a home for you, Jordi.”

Alba was born in Barcelona and moved through the club’s youth ranks before being allowed to leave in 2005.

He moved to Valencia for whom he became a first-team regular before Barcelona brought him back to the Nou Camp in 2012.

  • How do scholarships work? Find out how

How do scholarships work? Find out how

Scholarships vary greatly in their value, ranging from a few hundred dollars/pounds/euros to several thousands.

While they may not cover the entire cost of your education, every bit of financial assistance is valuable.

Scholarship funds can be used to pay for tuition fees, textbooks, living expenses, and other miscellaneous costs, depending on the specific scholarship you receive.

Different scholarships cater to different groups of students. Some scholarships are exclusively available for high school students who have yet to begin their college education, while others target students entering or already enrolled in tertiary education.

Scholarships can be awarded based on various criteria such as financial need, academic performance, or merit. They often focus on specific areas of study, interests, qualifications, or notable achievements.

They can also come from a wide variety of sources, including schools, private businesses, foundations, non-profit groups, charities, governments and individuals.

Because you don’t need to repay scholarships, there is no reason to limit the number of scholarships you apply for.

Some students fund their entire education through a combination of scholarships.

Many scholarships are offered year-round and don’t impose limits on which semesters they can apply to.

Whether you’ve been awarded scholarship money in the past or you’re applying for the first time, it is worth it to apply.

Every scholarship application will have its own requirements. Some applications are quick and simple, but others might be more involved.

For example, you might have to submit an essay with your application, or you may need to collect multiple letters of recommendation.

Many scholarship applications have hard deadlines in place, so it’s important to plan accordingly.

Scholarships can be based on several eligibility criteria such as needs, country or region of origin, gender, field of study, race, etc.

Scholarships are able to provide for various costs typically related to higher learning―from lab fees to books, living expenses, transportation, tuition and even more. A scholarship is at times a one-time payment.

Other scholarship awards are renewable; they provide students with funds each academic year or semester for some years or the entire duration of study.

In some cases, the scholarship money is made in the student’s name and paid to them directly. The money is, on other occasions, given to the institution or school of the student.

In these instances, the institution is then paid by the student for the discrepancy on any money due for tuition, accommodation, and other fees.

In the event the scholarships are ample to provide for the direct higher education costs, the surplus fund is reimbursed to the student.

If you are awarded multiple scholarships, there will often be a limit on the total amount of funding that you can accept. This is done so that other students can also be given an opportunity to receive funding.

Scholarship awards usually contain several details including the obligation of beneficiaries and rules. A scholarship may be stopped for one reason or the other based on the scholarship provider and their specific criteria/rules.

For example, a scholarship provider may halt a scholarship because the student dropped in academic performance, was involved in illegal activities or because the student spent the provided funds inappropriately.

Joao Felix’s comments about stay in Chelsea, leaves questions

Joao Felix has provided a strong indication about his future at Chelsea by expressing his adoration for playing with the club.

The Portuguese international is set to go back to Atletico Madrid in the upcoming summer, and there have been rumors linking Chelsea to a potential second loan offer for his services. Atletico is reportedly demanding €100 million (£86m/$107m) for a permanent transfer.

Joao Felix has dropped a major hint about his Chelsea future. ImageChris Lee.

However, Felix’s recent comments imply a fondness for his time at Chelsea, suggesting that he may be open to continuing his journey with the Blues.

Speaking in a Chelsea team video posted on social media, Felix said:

“I don’t know yet my future, but these four or five months, I’ve loved it. It’s a top club. Everyone in the club was very good to me. My teammates, unbelievable. I really like to be here.”

One thing that does seem to be clear is that Felix doesn’t want to return to Atleti unless manager Diego Simeone departs.

    See video below:

    Felix’s possible return to Atletico

El Mundo Deportivo in Spain claim playing under Simeone is ‘not negotiable’ with the pair falling out four seasons into his staggering £112m move from Benfica, which keeps him as the fourth most expensive player of all time.

That was despite him only having a little more than half a season of senior football under his belt, showing just how big an asset to Atletico the player is.

But with no one looking interested in paying anywhere near his £87m asking price, another loan to Chelsea appears to be the most likely scenario, according to Mundo Deportivo.

While Chelsea have struggled this season, Felix has made 11 starts in the league since arriving in January and has scored four goals.

The Blues are planning for the summer and are set to appoint Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager; it remains to be seen how the Argentine views Felix.

Felix will have to make a decision over his future, with Newcastle, who have secured qualification to the Champions League, linked with a potential swoop

    Chelsea to sign Felix permanently

Sports Brief previously reported that Chelsea could sign Felix in a player-swap deal.

Felix was a mainstay figure during Graham Potter’s stint at the club but has played a less prominent role since the arrival of Frank Lampard, who took charge as the caretaker boss after Potter was sacked.

Recent reports from the Evening Standard suggest Chelsea are keen to have Felix continue at the club beyond this summer.

Isaac Dogboe’s father borrowed money for son’s bouts, now faces legal troubles!

Isaac Dogboe’s father, Paul Dogboe, has revealed that he borrowed money to support his son’s boxing matches and is currently facing legal action from sponsors.

Isaac Dogboe, a former WBO Super Bantamweight Champion, officially parted ways with his father as his manager two years ago, a decision made without any animosity.

During an exclusive interview on Happy FM’s Wamputu Sports, Paul Dogboe shared the challenges he has faced in repaying the debts accumulated from financing Isaac Dogboe’s bouts.

As his son switched trainers, Paul Dogboe found himself burdened with outstanding financial obligations.

“I borrowed money to fund Isaac Dogboe’s bouts when I was still his trainer. It took over 11 years of investment and hard work to establish Isaac’s presence in the world of boxing,” Paul Dogboe expressed.

Recently, Paul Dogboe faced humiliation at the airport due to an unresolved lawsuit over unpaid debts related to financing Isaac’s fights. Various sponsors, including Uncle Mitch and others, provided financial support to facilitate Isaac’s matches.

Paul Dogboe emphasized that he does not seek anything from his son, but he expects him to honor his financial responsibilities.

Paul Dogboe, a former British Army officer, played a pivotal role in guiding his son to win the world title in April 2018 after defeating Jessie Magdaleno. Isaac Dogboe, who represented Ghana in the London 2012 Olympics, turned professional thereafter.

Along his journey to becoming the WBO champion, he secured victories against notable opponents such as John Neil Tabanao of the Philippines, Julian Aristule of Argentina, and the Mexican duo Javier Chacon and Caesar Juarez.

However, the 26-year-old boxer experienced a setback in his pursuit of becoming a two-division world champion.

Under the guidance of trainers Barry Hunter and Patrice Harris, Isaac Dogboe lost the WBO Featherweight world title fight to Cuban boxer Robeisy Ramirez in April.

Ex Wolfsburg Chief regrets selling Osimhen, says it “wasn’t a good move”

Former Wolfsburg director Jorg Schmadtke has admitted with conviction that he made a significant error by selling Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, who has since emerged as one of the top strikers in the world.

    Former Wolfsburg director Jorg Schmadtke

Back in 2018, Schmadtke decided to offload Osimhen to Belgian club Sporting Charleroi after the player scored no goals despite featuring in 14 matches.

Osimhen’s underwhelming performances during his time at Wolfsburg prompted the club to part ways with him. However, Schmadtke now recognizes the mistake he made, seeing how the Super Eagles star has flourished into an exceptional talent.

    Victor Osimhen celebrates win

And at Sporting Charleroi, Osimhen scored 12 goals before moving to Lille in 2019.

It was in the French Ligue 1 that the Nigerian striker found his rhythm scoring 13 goals in 27 games which caught the attention of those in charge at Napoli.

According to the reports on Complete Sports and Mirror, Jorg Schmadtke explained that he should have given Osimhen some time.

    Jorge Schmadtke regrets selling Osimhen

“It wasn’t a good move, in hindsight. When I came, Osimhen was limping and running in circles.

“I was told that the strikers we had weren’t good enough. The most important lesson is that you have to be patient with some transfers.”

Meanwhile, Jorg Schmadtke is expected to be appointed as Liverpool’s new sporting director.

    Edinson Cavani hails Osimhen

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Former Napoli and Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani stated clearly that Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen, is an idol to his kids at home as he confirmed his admiration for the Super Eagles star.

Valencia readies to appeal “no fans in stadium” sanctions by Spanish FA

Valencia are prepared to contest the decision made by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to penalize the club following an incident of racial abuse directed at Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior by their fans.

In response to the incident, the RFEF imposed a five-game partial stadium closure, specifically targeting the Mario Kempes stand at the Mestalla Stadium.

According to 90MIN, Valencia says that the sanctions imposed by the Spanish FA are disproportionate and unfair and will now appeal the verdict at the appeals committee.

The six-time La Liga winners insist it is wrong for the FA to punish everyone for the crimes of a few, as they maintained that not all in the stands were guilty of the racist attacks on Vinicius Junior.

Valencia will be without fans at the Mario Kempes stand for their final home game this season and their first four matches of the 2023/24 season except if the ban is overturned.

Seven arrested over Vinicius’ racist attacks

Seven people have been arrested in separate incidents in Spain concerning racist abuse directed at Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, Eurosport reports.

The most recent incident occurred during Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss to Valencia on Sunday, when the Brazilian winger suffered racist abuse from some fans at the Mario Kempes stand before he was sent off.

Vinicius has received widespread support following the ugly incident at the Mestalla Stadium after the Brazilian blasted La Liga on social media in reaction to the incident.

Chelsea fans amusingly applaud Christensen for scoring own goal for Barcelona

Andreas Christensen has been praised as a true Chelsea supporter after his contribution helped maintain a record held by his former club during Barcelona’s defeat to Real Valladolid.

Following their crowning as La Liga champions, Barcelona experienced their second loss in a 3-1 defeat away from home against Valladolid, who are fighting against relegation.

In the match, Christensen displayed his skills by expertly redirecting a cross into his own net with a header, giving Valladolid the lead.

Despite Barca falling behind 3-0, Robert Lewandowski managed to score a consolation goal.

This notable incident highlighted Christensen’s dedication to his former club, Chelsea, earning him recognition as a true fan for inadvertently assisting in preserving a record associated with the club.

According to Daily Star, Barcelona had already matched Chelsea’s record of 25 clean sheets set in the 2004/05 season and were eyeing the least goals conceded of 15 set in the same season under José Mourinho.

    Chelsea fans troll Christensen

According to The Athletic, a verbal agreement was reached between Christensen and Chelsea over a new contract, but the Dane walked out of negotiations and joined the La Liga outfit on a free transfer.

The Blues fans seem not to have forgotten the incident and trolled the player for his own goal, which was Barca’s 16th goal conceded this season.

    One wrote:

”Christensen puts the ball in the BACK of his own net. Chelsea 15 goals record is safe.”

    Another wrote:

”Agent Christensen helping Chelsea maintain their goal conceded record. Even though he plays for Barcelona now, he still has Chelsea at heart.”

    The third wrote:

”Christensen scoring an own goal so that Barcelona won’t defeat Chelsea’s fewest goal record is another win for Chelsea this season. That means Jose Mourinho’s record for fewest goals conceded in a single Premier League campaign still stands.”

    Another added:

”Yes!!!!! Always knew Christensen was proper chels!!! That own goal means Chelsea’s 15 GA record stands for yet another year!!”

    Christensen rejects wage cut

Sports Brief reported that Christensen rejected Barcelona’s wage cut offer, which was aimed to fund the return of Lionel Messi to Camp Nou.

The offer was made to Andreas and fellow summer signing Franck Kessie, but both rejected it. They felt it was unwarranted to have such offers less than a year into their time at the club.

Anthony Martial infuriates Ten Hag, risk being sold this summer

Reports indicate that, Erik ten Hag’s patience with Anthony Martial has reached its limit, and he is now considering selling the striker in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The incident that triggered this decision occurred during the match against Bournemouth on May 20, when ten Hag substituted Martial in the 57th minute.

The player was visibly upset and walked off the pitch towards the tunnel, a reaction that did not sit well with his manager.

The Mirror has now revealed that the Manchester United manager is prepared to end Martial’s tenure at the club and put him up for sale.

Despite the striker’s persistent fitness issues throughout the season, ten Hag had previously expressed his support for Martial.

However, it seems that the recent events have prompted a change in his stance.

The 27-year-old has only scored eight goals in 27 appearances in a team where he is supposed to be the lead striker.

United haven’t fared well in the striking department, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure in January leaving Martial as the sole striker.

The club brought in Wout Weghorst on a short-term deal, but he too, has failed to impress. The Sun reports that Martial’s body language and movement has also been an issue amongst Manchester United fans.

    Ronaldo reaction

You will remember that ten Hag boldly did away with Ronaldo after the Portuguese icon refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham last year. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner instead walked down the tunnel.

He was suspended for one game, but he escalated the issue after conducting an explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

    Strikers Manchester United can buy

Ten Hag will be hoping to sign a proven striker in the summer. Martial’s and Weghorst’s struggles in front of goal have made it more imperative that they are not strikers ten Hag can rely on long-term as part of the project he is building at Old Trafford.

Manchester United might be in take-over talks at the moment, but the necessity of having a proven number 9 keeps growing day by day.

Sports Brief took a look at who the club can approach to alleviate their striking concerns. Marcus Rashford has done well so far, but he will need help.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, an agreement on personal terms is “90 per cent done” between the Merseysiders and the versatile midfielder.

Klopp’s side will have to act swiftly to also avoid a potential transfer war with Chelsea as their incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of the 24-year-old.

Romano told his YouTube show Here we Go: “There is a fixed amount into the contract of Alexis Mac Allister at Brighton.

“We could say that this is working like a release clause. Yes, there is an exit clause for Alexis Mac Allister to leave Brighton.

In January, Juve were found guilty of a transfer scam over three seasons, which was orchestrated by then-sporting director Fabio Paratici, who joined Spurs in 2021.

Juventus were judged to have inflated transfer fees in dealings with other Italian clubs to create millions of pounds in “capital gains” for tax purposes.

That allowed the club to spend more in the market than would have been allowed under Financial Fair Play regulations.

The Turin outfit was initially handed a 15-point deduction, when senior club figures including ex-President Andrea Agnelli and Paratici were handed lengthy bans.

Although the points punishment was suspended last month, pending yesterday’s hearing, Paratici resigned from his role at Tottenham after his ban was confirmed.

Prosecutor Giuseppe Chine, on behalf of the Italian FA, demanded an 11-point penalty at the start of a three-hour virtual hearing on Monday.

Juventus argued that the punishment should not be so severe because the breaches took place under Agnelli’s leadership of the club and that there had subsequently been a major overhaul of the board.

But the tribunal imposed the major punishment in a verdict which the club suggested it might still appeal.

Juventus said: “This judgment arouses great bitterness in the club and in its millions of supporters.”

UEFA have already opened proceedings which could result in a European ban for the Italian club.

But if Juve are not in next season’s Champions League, Arsenal will be assured of a place in the second group of seeds and avoid a potential nightmare draw in the group phase.

  • Emiliano Martinez promises to “cut salary” and bring Messi to Aston Villa

Emiliano Martinez promises to “cut salary” and bring Messi to Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez has made an astonishing proposal to bring Lionel Messi to the club.

Martinez, aged 30, and Messi, aged 35, were teammates for Argentina when they won the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the previous year.

Messi emerged as the joint top scorer in the tournament, leading his country to their third World Cup victory.

Martinez played a crucial role in Argentina’s success, making impressive saves in two penalty shoot-outs and earning the prestigious Golden Glove award for the best goalkeeper.

Now Messi is weighing up his options as he prepares to make what could be the final move of his club career.

He is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season after two years, having been booed by his own fans last month.

The Barcelona legend has been linked with a move back to the Catalan giants, although it is unclear whether they will be able to afford his wages.

Messi has also reportedly received a lucrative £350million-a-year offer from Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal.

But Martinez has come out and offered to reduce his wages in order to bring his fellow countryman to the Midlands.

He told ESPN: “If they are whistling Messi, I would bring him here… at Villa.

“Hey, man, we’ll drink mate, we eat asados [roasted meat] every week. I will cut my salary, we’ll do our best.”

Villa are in line for a Europa Conference League place next season as they sit seventh in the Premier League table.

But a move for Messi remains a somewhat fanciful dream as the Argentine approaches the final stages of his career.

After PSG handed him a two-week suspension for missing training due to a trip to Saudi Arabia, the Ligue 1 champions’ fans booed him upon his return to the side.

And the fractured relationship between Messi and the club has brought an end to any discussions about him extending his stay in the French capital.

  • Thomas Partey likely to miss Arteta’s Arsenal summer rebuild

Thomas Partey likely to miss Arteta’s Arsenal summer rebuild

Ghanaian midfielder and Arsenal forward Thomas Partey, who is rumoured to be interested in moving to a couple of clubs in the Italian top division, might leave Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s squad this summer, along with Granit Xhaka.

In order to be ready for another title fight the following season, Mikel Arteta is planning to completely reconstruct the midfield for Arsenal.

With Bayer Leverkusen keen to recruit the Switzerland midfielder, Granit Xhaka has now made a significant hint that he will leave this summer. He pledged to make a decision this week.

Thomas Partey is also a target for Serie A clubs and Italy could be a next career move for the Ghana midfielder this summer, with two clubs thought to be keen.

Partey, who turns 30 next month, was a key figure in Arsenal ’s title challenge this season but his drop in form during the run-in has only underlined the need for major squad reinforcements.

Arsenal have made Declan Rice their No1 transfer target this summer with West Ham willing to sell their England midfielder to a Champions League club if they get bids in excess of £100m. They remain keen on Brighton ’s Moises Caicedo.

Gunners boss Arteta has also been linked with a move for Manchester City ’s veteran midfielder Ilkay Gundogan who is out of contract at the Etihad this summer but could yet stay and Barcelona also want him.

Arsenal are one of a clutch of clubs who are interested in Chelsea ’s England star Mason Mount with Liverpool and Manchester United also keen. Chelsea’s incoming boss Mauricio Pochettino may also fight to keep him.

Xhaka, 30, has been at Arsenal for seven years, Arteta rates him highly as a player and as a personality but if he goes it will be with the club’s blessing and goodwill as a farewell gesture out of respect for his service and commitment.

It appears that he has now made his decision on his future and asked directly after Arsenal’s defeat at Nottingham Forest , Xhaka said: “You will know next week, for sure. Before the Wolves game.

“I think the fans deserve that. And I do, as well. We have one more week of the Premier League season to go and I want to enjoy it and I want you guys to, as well.”

Xhaka also spoke emotionally about wanting to do “something special” this season as if he was preparing to say goodbye.

“Where I was three years ago and where I am today, I think I’ve grown up as a person and I’ve got my respect back,” he said. “In the dressing room everything was always fine but I got it back from the fans.

“When I talked about special…I mean, how can I say it? Where I have been and how I came back and my turnaround, maybe it’s the first time in the history of the Premier League it’s been done?

“It’s made me happy. It makes me proud. But this is my story, my path. How the fans have treated me, I didn’t expect that – but I am thankful for them. I want to give them something back for, maybe, my last game on Sunday.

“I wanted to do something special this season, maybe with a title, but it’s not the time. Let’s see what the future holds.”

Arsenal are expecting a major set of ins and outs this summer which could be seen as surprising after what has been an unexpected season as they were not expected to challenge for the title.

Kieran Tierney and Rob Holding could also go while Reiss Nelson will become a free agent. Emile Smith Rowe could also be sacrificed as they look to strengthen their options with Leicester ’s James Maddison another on their radar.

After such an impressive season, the growing uncertainty over some of their futures has also coincided with a dip in form during the run-in.

Arsenal want to strengthen their midfield, but they also want defensive reinforcements plus a dynamic winger to provide back-up for Bukayo Saka who ran out of steam having played so many games. They may yet look to sign another striker with physical presence.

What is certain is that Arteta sees this summer as arguably the biggest transfer window of his reign as Arsenal manager because they need to kick on again to challenge Manchester City.

  • Arsenal’s interest in Gundogan pushes City to heed to star’s new demands

Arsenal’s interest in Gundogan pushes City to heed to star’s new demands

Manchester City is determined to prevent Ilkay Gundogan from joining Arsenal by negotiating a new contract with the player.

Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, is interested in reuniting with Gundogan, as they previously worked together when Arteta served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant until 2019.

The German’s City contract expires at the end of the season and early talks failed to find an agreement.

Barcelona indicated they were willing to offer him a two-year deal and Gundogan was holding out for a similar offer from his current club.

The stand-off alerted Arsenal, who ran the champions close in the title race, to the possibility they could bring him to the Emirates for free this summer.

However, there is now optimism that a compromise can be reached which will see him extend his seven-year stay at the Etihad.

The deal proposed by City is believed to be structured differently to the one he has been offered at the Nou Camp but is closer to what he was looking for.

And if he does stay, it would be a timely boost for Guardiola who has regularly stated wants the German – his first signing at City back in 2016 – to stay.

Gundogan scored twice in each of his last two league starts – against Leeds and Everton – to put them on the brink of a third straight title.

He lifted the trophy at the weekend despite not getting on against Chelsea – and is now hoping to get his hands on two more before the season finishes.

The feeling is Guardiola would have thrown his captain on for a few minutes at the end to say his goodbyes if he had thought it was going to be his Etihad farewell.

His situation has taken on increasing importance with summer target Jude Bellingham expected to join Real Madrid rather than the English champs.

Guardiola is looking to strengthen his midfield this summer with Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic one name under consideration along with Celta Vigo’s Gabri Veiga.

Brighton’s World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister is also a player the Etihad chief admires – although he is expected to join Liverpool.

Meanwhile, City remain in talks with teen defender Rico Lewis over a new deal – but are yet to finalise terms.

The 18-year-old full-back showed his versatility and quality again during the 1-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday and has been praised by Guardiola for his contribution to the title success.
