  • Donald Trump is back on YouTube full time

Donald Trump is back on YouTube full time

In the lead-up to the 2024 election, voters should be able to hear equally from candidates, according to the video streaming platform.

More than two years after his supporters violently stormed the US Capitol, YouTube has lifted restrictions on Donald Trump’s channel, making it the newest social media platform to fully restore the former US president’s account.

The choice was made on Friday as the race for the Republican presidential nomination in the 2024 election began to heat up with Trump, who has formally declared his candidature, frequently taking potshots at potential rivals.

“We carefully evaluated the continued risk of real-world violence, while balancing the chance for voters to hear equally from major national candidates in the run up to an election,” YouTube, which is owned by Google, said in a tweet on Friday.

After a right-wing mob attacked the US Capitol in Washington, DC on January 6, 2021, to prevent the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory, several social media networks restricted or banned Trump’s accounts.

The president’s critics accuse him of inciting the violence, including via social media posts where he made false accusations of election fraud.

In recent months, social media firms – including Twitter and Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram – have restored the former president’s accounts. But Trump has not returned to these websites. Instead, he has been communicating with supporters through his own platform, Truth Social.

As president, Trump’s social media posts – especially on Twitter – constantly stirred controversy, and at times caused international diplomatic crises.

Twitter “permanently suspended” Trump’s account after the January 6 riot, but the platform reversed the decision after it was acquired by billionaire Elon Musk.

“I am staying on Truth. I like it better, I like the way it works, I like Elon, but I’m staying on Truth,” he told Fox News last year.

The former president still maintains that the 2020 election was “stolen” – a claim that he regularly repeats on Truth Social.

In December, a Democratic-led congressional panel that investigated the attack on the Capitol recommended criminal charges against the former president.

A special Justice Department prosecutor is investigating Trump for his role in the riot and possible mishandling of classified information in a separate investigation.

As he gears up for the 2024 primaries, Trump is also facing several state-led inquiries into his campaign conduct, efforts to overturn the 2024 elections and private business practices.

Trump denies wrongdoing in all cases and accuses prosecutors of weaponising the justice system against him for political purposes.

“THE FAKE INVESTIGATIONS BY RADICAL LEFT DEMOCRAT PROSECUTORS ARE NOTHING OTHER THAN ELECTION INTERFERENCE INTO THE POLITICS OF A FAILING NATION,” he wrote on Truth Social on Thursday.

  • Why International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Putin, what we know so far

Why International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Putin, what we know so far

The International Criminal Court, which operates independently, is located in The Hague, Netherlands, and was created by a treaty called the Rome Statute first brought before the United Nations.

Most countries on Earth – 123 of them – are parties to the treaty, but there are some notable exceptions, including Russia, as well as the US, Ukraine and China.

The ICC is meant to be a court of “last resort” and is not supposed to replace a country’s justice system. The court, which has 18 judges serving nine-year terms, tries four types of crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity, crimes of aggression and war crimes.

Putin arrest warrant: The ICC on Friday issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Russian commissioner for children’s rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, for an alleged scheme to deport Ukrainian children to Russia.

The court said there “are reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Putin bears individual criminal responsibility” for the alleged crimes, for having committed them directly alongside others, and for “his failure to exercise control properly over civilian and military subordinates who committed the acts.”

Reports of Ukrainian children in Russia: The Ukrainian government says many missing children have been forcibly taken to Russia. The Russian government doesn’t deny taking Ukrainian children and has made their adoption by Russian families a centerpiece of propaganda.

Some of the children have ended up thousands of miles and several time zones away from Ukraine. According to Lvova-Belova’s office, Ukrainian kids have been sent to live in institutions and with foster families in 19 different Russian regions, including Novosibirsk, Omsk and Tyumen regions in Siberia and Murmansk in the Arctic.

In April 2022, the office of Lvova-Belova said that around 600 children from Ukraine had been placed in orphanages in Kursk and Nizhny Novgorod before being sent to live with families in the Moscow region. As of mid-October, 800 children from Ukraine’s eastern Donbas area were living in the Moscow region, many with families, according to the Moscow regional governor.

UN report on alleged war crimes: The UN on Thursday said in a report that war crimes perpetrated by Russia included “attacks on civilians and energy-related infrastructure, wilful killings, unlawful confinement, torture, rape and other sexual violence, as well as unlawful transfers and deportations of children.”

So, will Putin actually be arrested?: Probably not.

Anyone accused of a crime in the jurisdiction of the court, which includes countries that are members of the ICC, can be tried. The court tries people, not countries, and focuses on those who hold the most responsibility: leaders and officials. While Ukraine is not a member of the court, it has previously accepted its jurisdiction.

The ICC does not conduct trials in absentia, so Putin would either have to be handed over by Russia or arrested outside of Russia. That seems unlikely.

NUGS, EduWatch wants Parliament to uncap GETFund

The Ghana Education Trust Fund’s cap needs to be removed immediately, according to a petition submitted to Parliament by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and Eduwatch (GETFund).

The group claims that a decrease in education funding has occurred as a result of the GETFund’s cap.

“Our concern primarily stems from the concerns of declining funding for education which emanates from GETFund.

Act 947 especially for the GETFund part is an enemy of the progress of education in Ghana,” the group said.

NUGS, EduWatch petition Parliament to uncap GETFund

Dennis Appiah Larbi Ampofo, the national president of NUGS, explained that the decline in funding has had a negative impact on the distribution of funds to the Student Loan Trust Fund and other educational organisations when he presented the petition to the Education Committee of Parliament on March 16.

“Our biggest problem started in 2023 when we realised that it was not a boardroom discussion again. It’s a matter of deliberate attempts to deprive students in this country of the requisite funding needed to run an educational sector. The necessary funds (which are) supposed to be released to the agencies have ceased,” he said.

NUGS, EduWatch petition Parliament to uncap GETFund

The student body appealed to the committee to reject the 2023 proposed formula for the disbursement of GETFund.

“We stand at the crossroad where the fate of our young students lies in your hands. First, we reject the formula without any equivocation. We can only have a comfortable discussion about the future of education when the fund meant for education is guaranteed by this House.

“We call on you to reject the 2023 proposed formula and move steps to immediately uncap GETFund. Uncapping GETFund is a communal labour,” they added.

NUGS, EduWatch petition Parliament to uncap GETFund

The Executive Director of education think tank, Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare who was also present during the presentation of the petition, said the committee must take a decision by Monday, March 20, to save the education sector from collapse.

“Let’s respect the fact that education funds are meant for education, it’s as simple as that. We hope that by Monday the select committee will take a decision,” he said.

Additionally, the ranking member on the Constitutional and Legal Committee, Bernard Ahiafor backed the claim by the student body, stressing that the government failed to pay in full the monies allocated to GETFund.

NUGS, EduWatch petition Parliament to uncap GETFund

“Several attempts made to ensure that the full amount of VAT paid by Ghanaians to be released to the GETFund for financing education in this country, is to no avail. In the 2023 budget for instance, if we look at page 190, it is stated clearly that the projected revenue for the 2.5% VAT meant for GETFund is GH₵4.65 billion.

“Now if you go to page 191 it is stated their expenditure items is only GH₵1.8 billion out of the GH₵4.65 billion that will be released to the fund and a cause for worry,” he bemoaned.

NUGS, EduWatch petition Parliament to uncap GETFund

The MP for Akatsi South accused the government of attempting to collapse the fund.

He said even the small amount that is supposed to be released to GETFund by government is in arrears and that if the situation continues like this, then it is fair to conclude that “this current government intends to collapse the GETFund.”

However, he assured that the minority “will do everything possible to ensure that whatever is supposed to be released to GetFund is released, so that the fund does not collapse.”

  • Russia vows to destroy Ukraine jets

Russia vows to destroy Ukraine jets

Following two promises from its allies to provide planes, Russia has threatened to destroy any fighter jets that are given to Ukraine.

On Friday, Slovakia pledged some MiG-29 aircraft to Kiev, a day after Poland. Slovakia was the second Nato country to do so.

The jets are no longer in use in Slovakia after the fleet was grounded last year.

Although Ukraine has requested modern jets from Western nations, these are only considered as long-term solutions due to the lengthy training requirements.

After a year of the Russian invasion, it views additional aircraft as crucial for its defences and potential counterattacks.

Other Nato countries are considering sending planes such as the MiG-29 – a model which dates from the time of the Soviet Union – which Ukrainian pilots are trained to fly.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov condemned the plans, saying that the aircraft would not affect the outcome of Moscow’s “special military operation”, as it calls the war.

He said they would only “bring additional woes for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people”.

“Of course, during the special military operation, all this equipment will be subject to destruction,” the spokesman added.

The Polish and Slovak pledges are a positive move for Ukraine – which has more pilots than planes – but will not make a decisive difference.

The Ukrainians say what they really need is US-made F-16 fighters.

Yuri Sak, a senior Ukrainian defence adviser, says the fourth-generation fighters have better capabilities.

It still seems unlikely that Ukraine would get them – at least for now, as it would take time to train Ukrainian pilots on Western jets.

Western military officers remain sceptical about modern fighters. Their focus is on helping Ukraine win the battle on the ground.

The front lines are swamped with air defence systems on both sides. The Russian air force is much bigger than Ukraine’s and it hasn’t been able to gain control of the skies.

At the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine was believed to have about 120 combat capable aircraft – mainly ageing MiG-29s and Su-27s.

On Friday, Slovakian Prime Minister Eduard Heger tweeted that his government had approved sending the country’s 13 MiG-29s to Ukraine.

He said “promises must be kept” and that he was glad others were answering Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s call for more weapons.

It is not clear how many of the Slovakian planes are operational.

Mr Heger said Slovakia would also send Ukraine part of its Kub air defence system.

On Thursday, Poland pledged four MiG-29s, to be sent in the coming days, but more are expected to follow.

As with its pledge of Leopard tanks, Poland has broken a barrier. This was a step no-one was prepared to take a year ago.

News of the pledges came amid Russian media reports that Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu had decorated pilots involved in an incident earlier this week .

Washington has condemned the Russian actions, in which it says one of the Su-27 jets clipped the drone, as reckless, but Moscow says the drone failed on its own.

Gift Orban lands Europa Conference League player and goal of the week awards nomination

Following his recent performance for KAA Gent, Nigerian striker Gift Orban has been nominated for the UEFA Europa Conference League Player and Goal of the Week awards.

On March 15, Orban gained notoriety for scoring three goals for Belgium in their 4-1 Europa Conference League victory over Istanbul Basaksehir.

With goals in the 31st, 32nd, and 34th minutes, Orban completed the competition’s fastest hat-trick ever.

The victory enabled Gent to advance to the quarterfinal with a 5-2 overall record.

According to the report by Complete Sports, the brilliant performance of Orban was noted and therefore nominated for both of the awards.

Orban among the nominees West Ham United’s Jarrod Bowen, AZ Alkmaar’s Jesper Karlssson, and Anderlecht’s Bert Verbruggen are the other players nominated for the Player of the Week award. Among the nominees for the Goal of the Week prize are Bowen again, Sivasspor’s Erdogan Yesilyurt, and Gaetan Laborde of OGC Nice.

    Has Orban earned Nigeria call-up?

Previously, tere were calls by fans for Nigeria head coach, Jose Peseiro to invite Orban into the Super Eagles squad for the coming AFCON qualifiers, but this did not happen. He will have to continue working hard at his club for a possible future call-up and fans believe it is only a matter of time.

Peseiro calls up Iwobi, Musa Sports Brief previously reported on coach Peseiro releasing the Super Eagles squad list of 23 players to face Guinea Bissau in the AFCON qualifiers.

As expected, Napoli forward Victor Osimhen, Nigeria’s captain Ahmed Musa, Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi all made it into the country’s squad.

Osimhen is the man of the moment in the Italian Serie A and fans back home are expecting him to excel on the pitch for the Super Eagles too.

  • ICC issues arrest warrant for Putin

ICC issues arrest warrant for Putin

Judges order the issuance of an arrest warrant for the Russian president in connection with the alleged kidnapping of Ukrainian children; Moscow rejects this decision.

For alleged war crimes in Ukraine, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia.

In a statement released on Friday, the Hague-based court said the warrant was issued due to Putin’s alleged involvement in the forcible removal and transfer of children from the occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia.

“There are reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Putin bears individual criminal responsibility for the aforementioned crimes,” added the court, which has no police force of its own to enforce warrants.

The ICC also issued a warrant for the arrest of Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, the commissioner for children’s rights in the office of the Russian president on similar allegations.

Russia, which denies committing atrocities since it invaded Ukraine in February last year, does not recognise the ICC’s jurisdiction and does not extradite its nationals.

“The decisions of the International Criminal Court have no meaning for our country, including from a legal point of view,” Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on her Telegram channel after the ICC’s announcement.

“Russia is not a party to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and bears no obligations under it.”

But ICC President Piotr Hofmanski told Al Jazeera it was “completely irrelevant” that Russia had not ratified the Rome Statute.

“According to the ICC statute, which has 123 state parties, two-thirds of the whole international community, the court has jurisdiction over crimes committed in the territory of a state party or a state which has accepted its jurisdiction,” he said. “Ukraine has accepted the ICC twice – in 2014 and then in 2015.”

Hofmanski said 43 states had referred “the situation in Ukraine to the court, which means they have formally triggered our jurisdiction.

“The court has jurisdiction over crimes committed on anyone on the territory of Ukraine from November 2013 onwards regardless of nationality of the alleged perpetrators.”

The warrants came a day after a United Nations-backed inquiry accused Russia of committing wide-ranging war crimes in Ukraine, including the forced deportations of children in areas it controls.

Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin hailed the ICC’s decision.

“The world received a signal that the Russian regime is criminal and its leadership and henchmen will be held accountable,” he said in a statement on social media. “This is a historic decision for Ukraine and the entire system of international law.”

James Bays, Al Jazeera’s diplomatic editor, described the ICC’s move as “very serious”.

He said there were many who welcomed the announcement but there were others who raised questioned whether this would be a problem for diplomacy going forward.

“Now you have the head of state of Russia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, who is now a wanted man by the ICC,” he said.

“This is going to be a headache for some of those who are going to have to deal with President Putin – how are other countries going to deal with him?” Bays added. “Will President Putin be able to travel?”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s wife breaks down as she recounts death of son

Georgina Rodriguez, the partner of Cristiano Ronaldo, broke down when she retold the story of how her infant son passed on last year.

The couple agonisingly lost a child last year in one of the lowest moments of their lives.

She was due to give birth to twins, but only one – the girl – survived.

Appearing in the second season of her Netflix documentary, I am Georgina, Rodriguez is expected to shed more light on the incident when the series officially debuts on March 24.

In the trailer, a picture of her holding the surviving baby, Bella Esmeralda sends her into a whirlwind of emotions. She admits that her adorable baby girl gives her the strength to carry on.

“Life is hard. Life continues. I have reason to carry on and be strong,” Rodriguez said, as quoted by the Sun.

The 29-year-old model also thanks Ronaldo for his immense contribution during their trying times. “Cris encouraged me massively to carry on with all my commitments. He said: ‘Carry on with your life. It’s going to do you good’.

” The first season of the TV series had six episodes. Rodriguez relocated to Saudi Arabia after Ronaldo signed for Al-Nassr, following the termination of his contract at Manchester United.

Sports Brief also reported on Ronaldo revealing how his ritual of speaking to his late father and son inspires him to become a better human being. The Al-Nassr captain is widely considered one of the greatest footballers to have graced the sport thanks to his impressive achievements.

Despite being on the wrong side of 38, Ronaldo has not lost his passion and continues to aspire for greatness even in the twilight of his career.

  • Madrid’s keeper wants to avoid these two teams in the Champions League Quarter Finals

Madrid’s keeper wants to avoid these two teams in the Champions League Quarter Finals

Goalkeeper Thibault Courtois of Real Madrid claims he wants to avoid playing any of the remaining English teams in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

On Wednesday night at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, the Belgian keeper was in net as Los Blancos defeated Liverpool 1-0.

In their quest to retain their European championship, Carlo Ancelotti’s team easily advanced to the round of eight after defeating the Reds 6-2 overall.

After crushing RB Leipzig 7-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, Manchester City advanced to the next round. Chelsea also advanced after defeating Dortmund 2-0 at Stamford Bridge last week.

Napoli, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Benfica, and Bayern Munich are among the other teams that are still in the running.

Real Madrid could therefore be paired together with any of the teams in the quarter-finals but their safest pair of hands, Courtois is hoping his side will avoid Chelsea and Manchester City. “I would like to change a bit,” he said, via Daily Mail. “Last year we already faced City and Chelsea, let’s see if we play other teams this year.”

He added: “Last year we made it clear what character we have in the team, with comebacks, we earn respect, we show that Real Madrid is always there.” Real Madrid eliminated both Chelsea and Manchester City from the Champions League last term, before beating Liverpool 1-0 in the final to win their 14th European title.

    Ancelotti doesn’t want AC Milan

Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti is seeking to win back-to-back Champions League titles with Real Madrid, but the veteran manager is afraid of meeting one team in the quarter-finals.

The 63-year-old manager guided the Spanish giants into the last eight with ease after Los Blancos swept aside Liverpool 6-2 on aggregate, as they push to defend their European title. According to Sempremilan, Ancelotti revealed he would prefer to avoid playing his former club, AC Milan when the draws for the UCL quarter-finals are conducted on March 17.

Dele Alli: Besiktas banishes former Tottenham midfielder

Dele Alli, a former Tottenham midfielder, dominated the Premier League after moving to Spurs from MK Dons in 2015. He won back-to-back PFA Young Player of the Year awards in his first two seasons in the top flight. His final significant international performance for his nation came with the Three Lions at the FIFA World Cup in Russia in 2018. He has played for England 37 times overall.

Alli’s career has fallen apart since he assisted the North London club in their run to the 2019 UEFA Champions League final, which they lost to Liverpool, another English club, in what many consider to be the most dull UCL final ever.

    Alli banished from Besiktas squad

As reported by Sky Sports, Alli joined Everton in the winter window of 2022 and after failing to make an impact, he was shipped out on loan to Besiktas in July that year, with certain conditions to make the deal permanent.

He has also failed to make an impact in Turkey and will likely return to the Toffees in the summer. With the English club battling relegation, they now also need to find a solution for their investment gone wrong – a player they spent £40 million on. As reported by Turkish publication, Takvim, the 26-year-old has been banished from the club’s matchday squad and will be in the stands until the end of the season, at which point he will return to England.

This news brings to mind the advice given to the versatile midfielder by Jose Mourinho, who said in an interview that Alli would regret not demanding more of himself, reported by Marca. ”I don’t expect [Alli] to be the man of the match every game or to score in every game.

I just want to tell you that you will regret it. You should demand more of yourself, not me [demanding] more of you, not me. Not anyone. You. You have to demand more from yourself,” the Special One said at the time.

    Manager disappointed with Alli

The banishment of Alli was a long time coming. In January, Sports Brief reported on Besiktas boss, Senol Gunes giving a worrying update on the player. At the time, the Turkish club boss admitted the England midfielder was no longer deserving of playing for the team due to his concerning lack of form.

Gunes was the seventh manager to have issues with Alli after coaches including Mauricio Pochettino, Ryan Mason, Antonio Conte, and Frank Lampard.

Collapse of USA’s Silicon Valley should be a lesson for Ghana – KPMG Senior Partner

Anthony Sarpong, a senior partner at the accounting and auditing firm KPMG Ghana, has counselled the Bank of Ghana and other central banks in Africa to view the failure of banks in developed countries as a warning to the banking industry to avoid a similar situation in the future.

Maintaining sufficient liquidity to cover customer withdrawals, in his opinion, is one way to stop bank failure.

He said the failure of those banks is a wake-up call that must not be disregarded in an interview with Joy Business following the collapse of US Bank, Silicon Valley Bank, and other larger financial institutions.

However, he expressed assurance that the steps taken by the Bank of Ghana to support banks will be successful.

“You noticed that the regulator has taken swift action to contain the effect of what is happening in the United States on the banking sector and any potential spill-over. So we won’t expect any effects”.

“However, it’s a developing situation and therefore must be watched with caution so that the fear it triggered in the US does not have a negative impact on Ghanaian banks as we go through our own challenges, he explained.

Furthermore, Mr. Sarpong urged the Bank of Ghana to ensure sufficient liquidity in the banking industry.

“The main area is to ensure sufficient liquidity of the banks, and the Bank of Ghana has assured of liquidity support to our banks. So one will be sure that we won’t go through a similar situation as we go on with our own debt restructuring”..

On March 10, Silicon Valley Bank, one of the most prominent lenders in the start-up ecosystem, collapsed.

Christian Atsu’s humility worth emulating – Kwabena Yeboah

Since Christian Atsu’s passing was reported in February, comments about his selflessness have poured in.

Today, the deceased Hatayspor player’s family, friends, football players, and prominent figures, including President Akufo-Addo, gathered to pay their respects.

Veteran commentator Kwabena Yeboah was one of them. He walked past the body this morning as the funeral for the former Black Stars player was taking place on the grounds of the State House in Accra.

Mr. Yeboah praised Christian’s humility in his interview , noting that he was at the height of his success.

For him, the late footballer’s humility is worth emulating.

“He never allowed his fame and well to get into his head. Often times when footballers get very famous, they tend to be a bit haughty and they tend to be a bit super zealous. He never ever got to that point. He never forgot his roots,” he added.

Atsu, 31, was found dead on February 18, 2023, following the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria on February 6, which killed more than 50,000 people in both countries.

His last club was Hatayspor club.

Prior to taking his seat, John Mahama made introductions to the dignitaries in attendance as well as the family of Christian Atsu.

To pay their final respects to Atsu, Mahama and his son Sharaf also made their way past the coffin.

When the body of Christian Atsu was first discovered on February 16, 2023, John Mahama paid glowing tributes to him.

“We all held our breaths, and we prayed as we heard the miracles of people pulled out of the rubble. We prayed that ours would be one of those miracles, too. Alas, it was not to be. But in all, we give thanks to the almighty God for giving Atsu to us even for the short 31 years of his life.

“At this time, Lordina and I extend our deepest condolences to his family and the football fraternity in Ghana,” he shared on Facebook.

Christian Atsu passed in February after his lifeless body was recovered from the rubble of his collapsed apartment in Hatay following an earthquake that struck Turkey on February 6, 2023.

The former Ghanaian International in his 7 years international career played at the World Cup and help Ghana finish second in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, in which he won the best player of the tournament.

Christian Atsu was ‘uniquely’ consistent with his tithe – George Afriyie

Former GFA vice president George Afriyie has revealed that late Black Stars forward Christian Atsu was a man who never made light of his tithing while he was alive.

Atsu perished in the deadly earthquake that struck Turkey, which claimed many lives. It took 12 days for his dead body to be found after the Ghanaian international was buried beneath the debris.

Speaking on Friday, March 17, at the player’s final funeral rites, Afriyie recalled his favourite moment with the 31-year-old while he was still alive.

“There is always one thing that I will always not forget. Tony [Appiah] will tell me that ‘George, Atsu and his tithe, he doesn’t miss them.’, he said.

“As for his calculations, he doesn’t miss and he will make sure that the 10% is paid per what the Christian faith believes. This is so unique.”

In his final match as a player, Atsu helped Hatayspor defeat Kasimpasa 1-0. The Ghanaian scored the game’s only goal with a beautiful free kick.

  • Ghana’s problems are not due to the 1992 constitution – Dr Stephen Amoah

Ghana’s problems are not due to the 1992 constitution – Dr Stephen Amoah

Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, according to Dr. Stephen Amoah, deputy minister-designate for trade and industry, has done “tremendously well” in terms of safeguarding and managing the nation’s fiscal space.

Despite the numerous economic setbacks the nation has experienced over the years, the 1992 constitution, in his opinion, has done a great deal to maintain the country’s economy.

The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in Accra hosted the GIMPA Law Conference 2023 on Tuesday. Dr. Amoah delivered a presentation at the conference.

Held under the theme: “The 1992 Constitution of Ghana @ 30; Taking Stock, Assessing Progress and Reflecting on the Future”, the event brought together experts as well as thought leaders across various facets of the country’s economy to discuss the impact of the country’s constitution on the socioeconomic life of the citizens.

In his presentation, Dr. Stephen Amoah, who also doubles as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Nhyieaso Constituency in the Ashanti Region, noted that “most of our challenges as a country comes to this point of how our fiscal space is managed by government”.

“Here in Ghana, we have been experiencing ‘negative effective tax rates’. It doesn’t matter who is in government. Prior to the Covid-19 and Russia-Ukraine war, all revenues generated by government has always been less than how much it has spent. Government always spends more than it earns. But the constitution has made provisions such that governments are forced to spend only within a certain means.”

Citing the issue of taxes and waivers, the lawmaker stressed that “if not for the constitution, successive governments would have abused tax privileges”, and added that the constitution “has put a check on all activities of those in authority in that government cannot wake up and impose taxes.”

According to Dr. Amoah, “this common saying that the private sector is the engine of growth has proven to be true in all modern economies. There is a global shift from socialism to capitalism and this has been successful as a result of the supporting constitution of the Republic of Ghana.”

He also added that the constitution has ensured the socioeconomic freedoms of all citizens in that it makes provisions for every person to “work under satisfactory, safe and healthy conditions and to receive equal pay for equal work without distinction of any kind”.

This, he opined, would have been worse, especially considering the kind of political culture we experience in Ghana.

“The Constitution has helped us as a country to properly manage our funds. It has provided everything we need as a country and has also contributed immensely towards building this beautiful country of ours”, he concluded.

IMF has vindicated us – NPP’s Amaning reiterates govt’s blame of economic woes on COVID and Russia-Ukraine war

Paul Amaning, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communication team, said that even the IMF’s managing director had said Ghana was on track for sustainable growth, barring exogenous shocks like COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war.

He emphasised that the NPP government has provided significant infrastructure to every sector of the economy.

If not for the current global financial crisis, according to him, the government had a clear vision for the country and was on track to carry it out.

He claims that whenever he hears the NDC criticizing wasteful spending, even though they are well aware of the fact that the government has invested in every area of the economy, they always seem to forget that many public employees have been working from home for close to a year as a result of COVID-19 while still receiving their salaries. Even though Ghanaians had their power costs cut in half, the country’s tax revenue was negatively impacted since businesses stopped operating.

“But in all, we were vindicated by the IMF Boss. Do you remember she used Ghana as an example for countries that had tangent growth that would have been sustainable but was affected due to external factors”, he told Movement Tv.

“This is a clear indication that government has better plans for the country which has been affected by external crisis. There are some countries where workers did not receive salaries. But ours is different due to the leadership of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo”, he added.

Mbappe could be new France captain -Deschamps confirms

Didier Deschamps, the head coach, has declared Kylian Mbappe as the front-runner to be the next captain of France on Thursday.

Hugo Lloris’ retirement from international football means that Deschamps will need a new captain for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifying matches against the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland.

Following the World Cup, where France lost to Argentina in the championship game, Lloris resigned from his position as a national team player. Mbappe, the tournament’s top scorer, is regarded as possessing leadership qualities.

“There are some that I consider possible,” said Deschamps. “Kylian is one of them.

“This will go through discussions with them before I make my decision. There is a responsibility in relation to being captain, with a little more important responsibility, but I want to have this discussion internally before I make my decision.”

Deschamps cast doubt on Adrien Rabiot being in the picture to lead Les Bleus.

He said of the Juventus midfielder: “Even if he has some experience, we know him well, as it is he has a possible form of leadership. But the captaincy, I don’t know if he really wants it deep down. To let him stay as he is already will be very good.”

Deschamps left out Axel Disasi and Matteo Guendouzi as he named a 23-player group for the games at home to the Dutch on March 24 and away to the Irish on March 27.

He could hand first caps to Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram and Lens goalkeeper Brice Samba, who all earned call-ups.

Khephren Thuram joins brother Marcus in the squad, with the sons of France great Lilian in contention to feature alongside each other in the national side.

Deschamps summoned Milan veteran Olivier Giroud, with the 36-year-old having elected not to retire from France duty after the World Cup, where he became the team’s all-time record scorer.

“As long as he maintains his level of performance with his club and remains eligible for selection, he is there,” Deschamps said.

A string of players Deschamps could have called upon are sidelined due to injury, including Ousmane Dembele, Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante and Christopher Nkunku.

Deschamps said of Pogba and Kante: “I always remain positive and knowing NG and Paul, they will do everything to become competitive again.”

Looking at the qualification task facing France, Deschamps said: “We must not tell ourselves that we are already qualified for the Euros because we were in the final of the World Cup. We must not rest on our laurels.”

    France squad:

Alphonse Areola (West Ham), Mike Maignan (Milan), Brice Samba (Lens); Eduardo Camavinga (Real Madrid), Wesley Fofana (Chelsea), Theo Hernandez (Milan), Ibrahima Konate (Liverpool), Jules Kounde (Barcelona), Benjamin Pavard (Bayern Munich), William Saliba (Arsenal), Dayot Upamecano (Bayern Munich); Youssouf Fofana (Monaco), Adrien Rabiot (Juventus), Aurelien Tchouameni (Real Madrid), Khephren Thuram (Nice), Jordan Veretout (Marseille); Kingsley Coman (Bayern Munich), Moussa Diaby (Bayer Leverkusen), Olivier Giroud (Milan), Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid), Randal Kolo Muani (Eintracht Frankfurt), Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain), Marcus Thuram (Borussia Monchengladbach).

  • Pre-World Cup worries nearly led Southgate to resign

Pre-World Cup worries nearly led Southgate to resign

Before the World Cup, England manager Gareth Southgate had concerns about his future, but he is now focused on winning the Euro 2024.

The Three Lions were one of the tournament’s most impressive teams up until they lost 2-1 to eventual runners-up France in the quarterfinals in Qatar.

Despite this, some people had questioned his status in light of England’s dismal performance leading up to the World Cup.

Following victories in March 2022 in friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Coast, England lost all six of its Nations League games, including a humiliating 4-0 loss to Hungary at home.

Southgate was optimistic after a 3-3 draw with Germany in September, but he acknowledged he was close to calling it a day.

“The doubts I had came before the [World Cup], really,” Southgate told reporters after naming his squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine.

“I spoke about this a couple of months ago so I’m going over old ground, but I never wanted to be a divisive figure, in terms of me doing the job affecting the performance of the team.

“Then there would be a debate where people say ‘I’d rather you lose so you’re gone’. I did worry before the World Cup whether I should say I was going at the end, to allow the team the freedom to play.

“I decided not to do that, because when we left Wembley after the Germany game there was an uplift with the mood, and we’ve always known where we stand with the players.

“I also wanted to show that you’ve got to come through tough spells as a manager, I’m not going to duck a challenge just because there’s criticism.

“But if there’s not the level of support and it starts to affect the team, that’s something I’m conscious of and that was my thought well ahead of Qatar.

Having committed to staying on for the Euros in Germany next year, Southgate is now looking for a fresh start as he set out his aim for England to go a step further than they managed in the delayed Euro 2020 tournament, when they lost to Italy on penalties in the final.

“I think it’s right to assess after a tournament,” he added. “We have to start from scratch.

“We have some great experiences over the last few years, which mean being European champions is a realistic aim.

“But we’re starting from the beginning again, and we’ve got to find the hunger to qualify.

“We’ve got two crucial games and we need everybody firing for two really difficult qualifiers.”

Southgate stuck with the majority of his World Cup squad for the first fixtures of 2023, though Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ben White both missed out, with Conor Coady replaced by March Guehi.

Ivan Toney was included despite an ongoing Football Association (FA) investigation into alleged breaches of gambling rules, while Raheem Sterling was absent due to injury.

According to The Citizen, Ali offered to provide Al Ahly SC fans with information on their upcoming CAF Champions League opponents, Al Hilal from Sudan, as a volunteer service.

Days earlier, on Saturday, the Brazilians had destroyed the Egyptians 5-2 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane.

In response to the controversial post, the club released a media statement:

“It has come to the attention of Mamelodi Sundowns that certain remarks that its employee, Khaled Ali may have made during a social media discussion relating to Al Ahly and Al Hilal may be contrary to the ethics, governance, and rules of Mamelodi Sundowns.”

The club said it viewed Ali’s alleged remarks and conduct very seriously. “[Sundows] is launching an immediate investigation to get exposed to the true facts. Khaled has been instructed to return from Sudan and report at the Sundowns offices at Chloorkop and make himself available for the investigation.”

In related coverage, as Sports Brief reported, Al Ahly has been struggling since Pitso Mosimane’s departure last June.

The latest setback without the South African at the helm is a humiliating 5-2 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in Tshwane.

This left the Egyptian superclub all but eliminated from the competition of this season’s CAF Champions League.

Sports Brief also reported on sections of Egyptian media accusing Mamelodi Sundowns of time-wasting, a tactic seen as more prevalent with North African teams.

Anas has finally been ‘humiliated’ – Sannie Daara reacts to Kennedy Agyapong’s High Court win

Ibrahim Sannie Daara, a former communications director for the Ghana Football Association, after the High Court’s decision in the Kennedy Agyapong v. Anas Aremeyaw Anas defamation case has said that “Evil and evildoers will not perpetuate their wrongdoing forever. There would be justice and that justice has been served today.

Today not anywhere but in the law court where now it has been confirmed, verified, and approved that Anas Aremeyaw Anas is corrupt and this is coming from the Court.”

On March 15, 2023, the Accra High Court dismissed Anas’ defamation lawsuit for 25 million cedis and ordered the investigative journalist to pay Kennedy Agyapong 50,000 cedis as damages.

The Accra High Court, did justice by exposing Anas Aremeyaw Anas as a dishonest and extortionate investigative journalist according to Saani Daara.

Saani Daara said he is pleased that Anas Aremeyaw Anas has been humiliated in front of Ghanaians because he believes that Anas’ method was to twist the facts rather than seek the truth.

“The Court of Ghana said that he is a blackmailer. Evil and evildoers will not perpetuate their wrongdoing forever. The truth has come out in a way that has humiliated this man (Anas Aremeyaw Anas) whose modus operandi is to twist things and not seek the truth,” Saani Daara said in an interview.

Meanwhile, Kennedy Agyapong stated that his win was dedicated to the former Ghana Football Association president, Kwesi Nyantakyi who was humiliated in the documentary in 2018.

Gianni Infantino remains FIFA president until 2027

At the FIFA Congress on Thursday, Gianni Infantino was unanimously elected to serve as the organization’s president again through the year 2027. As they did four years prior, delegates from the 211 member federations ushered in the 52-year-old Swiss lawyer, who succeeded the disgraced Sepp Blatter in 2016, for a third term by acclamation.

“I love you all,” Infantino told delegates in the Rwandan capital, where the voting system did not register the number of dissident voices. While FIFA statutes currently limit a president to a maximum of three four-year terms, Infantino has already prepared the ground to stay until 2031, declaring in December that his first three years at the helm did not count as a full term.

Infantino, who staunchly defended Qatar’s hosting of last year’s World Cup as the Gulf state’s treatment of migrant workers, women and the LGBTQ community came under the spotlight, has overseen the expansion of the men’s and women’s World Cup and huge increases in FIFA revenues.

The men’s World Cup will increase from 32 teams to 48 for the next edition in North America in 2026, while the women’s World Cup will feature 32 teams for the first time in Australia and New Zealand later this year.

Infantino has also announced projected income of $11 billion in the four years up to 2026, compared to $7.5 billion in the last four-year cycle ending in 2022.

Kwesi Nyantakyi reacts after Kennedy’s win of defamation case against Anas

Following a High Court decision on the defamation case involving renowned investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, Kwesi Nyantakyi, the former president of the Ghana Football Association, is claiming vindication.

According to Kwesi Nyantakyi, who spoke to Oman FM, the court’s decision clears him of blame and supports his suspicion that Anas is dishonest.

As a result of the court decision, according to Nyantakyi, Anas has been revealed, but he is not surprised because he has known all along that the investigative journalist is a crook and not who he claims to be.

“The court has stripped him naked. He has been disgraced. He claims to be an angel but the court has shown that he is worse than the devil. I will take no further action but his story is everywhere. He is a bad person and now he has been exposed. A lot of people know him as a crook,” he said.

The Accra High Court on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 dismissed the ¢25 million defamation suit brought to him by Anas and asked the investigative journalist to compensate Kennedy Agyapong with ¢50,000.

Speaking after the court ruling, Kennedy Agyapong stated that his win was dedicated to the former GFA president who was humiliated in the documentary.

Kennedy Agyapong also turned down the ¢50,000 awarded by the court for him and cautioned Anas to be conscious of his actions.

“All I will say is the victory is especially for Kwesi Nyantakyi and this gentleman. What they have gone through in Anas’s humiliation in this country, nobody should go through that,” Kennedy Agyapong told the press.

  • UEFA looking into why Inter fans were denied entry to the Porto match

UEFA looking into why Inter fans were denied entry to the Porto match

UEFA has launched an investigation after Inter Milan fans who had tickets for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Porto were turned away.

Prior to the second leg of the last-16, video on social media showed long lines of spectators waiting to enter Estadio do Dragao.

Porto had earlier in the day stated that Inter fans with tickets for the home end, even if they were obtained through the club, would be turned away.

However, Inter asserts that a deal was reached for their supporters to attend the game as long as they wore neutral tones.

The investigation into the situation was confirmed on Wednesday by the governing body of European football, UEFA.

“UEFA had been made aware that a large contingent of visiting supporters had procured tickets in home sectors of the stadium,” a spokesperson said.

“The UEFA regulations stipulate that five per cent of the stadium capacity must be provided to the visiting team in a segregated area for their supporters.

“The responsibility for the safe and secure management of spectators and the associated ticketing policy are determined by the match organiser and the relevant authorities.

“Mitigation measures were discussed between both clubs. UEFA is currently looking into the matter.”

Inter claimed a goalless draw to advance through to the Champions League quarter-finals as 1-0 aggregate winners.

The Italian club’s chief executive Beppe Marotta dedicated the result to those who were unable to get into the ground.

“We celebrate this passage that Inter had not achieved for 12 years, we give the credit to our coach, our players and the fans who were present,” he told Sky Italia.

“I also want to spare a thought for circa a thousand fans who were left outside the stadium even after regularly purchasing a ticket.

“I saw footage of families who were locked outside, children crying who had flown here from Italy.

“Football must represent unity and joy, so this is a bitter page in what was otherwise a wonderful evening.

“We had met with the local authorities this morning and they assured us the fans would be allowed in even beyond those limits of the away section. Instead, this did not happen.

“These were for the most part families with children, who certainly weren’t here to perpetrate acts of violence, but to support their team.

“I don’t believe the situation was so serious as to ban their entry.

“We realise UEFA are not to blame, but we feel that with a formal complaint we can prevent this sort of thing ever happening again.”

Kennedy says lawsuit victory against Anas is for Kwesi Nyantakyi

Kennedy Agyapong, the member of parliament for Assin Central in the Central Region, has honoured Kwesi Nyantakyi, the former president of the Ghana Football Association, by dedicating his victory in the defamation lawsuit against investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

The Accra High Court ordered the investigative journalist to pay Kennedy Agyapong 50,000 as compensation instead of upholding Anas’ 25 million Ghana cedi defamation lawsuit.

Kennedy Agyapong said in a statement following the court’s decision that his victory was in honour of the former GFA president who was degraded in the documentary.

Kennedy Agyapong declined the 50,000 that had been given to him by the court and admonished Anas to be careful what he did.

“All I will say is the victory is especially for Kwesi Nyantakyi and this gentleman. What they have gone through in Anas’s humiliation in this country, nobody should go through that,” Kennedy Agyapong told the press.

He added, “I will tell you today, the ¢50,000 I don’t need it, I will give it to him but he should live with his conscience.”

  • Andre Ayew says Nottingham Forest’s challenge this season is meeting years old teams

Andre Ayew says Nottingham Forest’s challenge this season is meeting years old teams

Ghanaian international Andre Ayew claims that his Nottingham Forest team has struggled because they are up against teams that have been together for a long time.

Ayew signed a temporary contract to join the Premier League team in January.

In their most recent 3-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspurs on the road last Saturday, the Ghanaian international missed a stoppage time penalty.

“Everybody who wears a Forest shirt knows it’s not going to be easy, but we’re going to keep believing in ourselves. If you were to say we’d be where we are after 26 games, a lot of people would be happy. That’s a fact.”

“The results will come. Our problem is we’re facing teams that have been together for four or five years, they have their own style of play and their own ideas, but it’s not time to panic.”

“It’s going to be difficult, but we don’t just have to look at the negatives. We know our away form isn’t good enough, but we’re not going to give up. We’re going to keep fighting until the end,” he said.

The 33-year-old joined Forest as a free agent in the January transfer window after leaving Qatari side Al Sadd. Ayew is determined to succeed once again in the English top flight and is pumped up for the game against Newcastle United.

  • Spalletti cautions Osimhen, teamates to focus on getting the job done ahead of Eintracht clash

Spalletti cautions Osimhen, teamates to focus on getting the job done ahead of Eintracht clash

Victor Osimhen of Nigeria and his teammates have been cautioned by Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti ahead of their Champions League matchup against Eintracht Frankfurt.

After defeating Germany 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal match, Napoli will play for pride in front of their home crowd.

Osimhen scored a goal for Napoli in the first match, and on March 15 at 8 p.m. local time, the Nigerian is expected to shine once more in Naples.

Spalletti reportedly said that his team should wait to celebrate until the second match, per the Complete Sports report.

Statement made by Spalletti “Seeing as it is practically a final, I want to see the attitude of a team that is starved and wants a result. I’ve seen them in training all term and they never let their heads drop. “Now the test is to forget what has happened in the past and focus on getting the job done now.

Don’t forget Eintracht got through a group that had Tottenham, Marseille and Sporting.

”Last year they won away to a Barcelona side that eliminated us, so we have total respect for the work Oliver Glasner is doing, we know it will be tough.”

Osimhen flaunts diamond necklace Earlier, had reported how Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen flaunted a multimillion Naira diamond necklace as he stepped out in style amid links with Premier League clubs this summer.

The Super Eagles star is currently the man of the moment in the Italian Serie A, where he is leading the scoring chart with 19 goals.

Osimhen has won the hearts of many Napoli fans through his performances and they are hoping the Nigerian will remain in Naples after the current season ends.

The Nigerian was seen in joyous mood while showing off his expensive piece of jewellery.

Spalletti desires that his Napoli team ‘become folklore’

By making it to their first-ever Champions League quarterfinals, Napoli will “become folklore,” according to Luciano Spalletti, who wants his team to do so.

The dominant Serie A team is on the verge of advancing to the round of eight of Europe’s top club competition after defeating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in the first leg in Germany.

The Partenopei will undoubtedly fancy their chances of completing the task at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium given their commanding 18-point lead in Serie A and unbeaten streak of 11 home Champions League games.

However, they were ultimately eliminated from the competition on the one previous occasion they had won a knockout match, giving up a 3-1 lead before losing 5-4 on aggregate  at this stage against Chelsea in the 2011-12 season.

Nevertheless, Spalletti knows what is at stake for the club, and issued a rallying cry to his players in his pre-match press conference.

“Great teams are made up of great players,” he said. “There’s history to be written in tomorrow’s game. Our city is replete with big stories and big personalities. We’re keen to become part of Naples’ history and become folklore in this city.

“You can compare it to the first final of the season. I don’t think that can put pressure on the side, because I’ve seen them deal with many positive and negative situations already this term.

“Seeing as it is practically a final, I want to see the attitude of a team that is starved and wants a result. I’ve seen them in training all term, and they never let their heads drop.

“Now, the test is to forget what has happened in the past and focus on getting the job done now.”

Morocco, Spain and Portugal announces joint bid to host 2030 World Cup

Morocco will submit a joint bid for the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal, according to King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

Great Britain, making their tournament debut in the fifth iteration, stood out in a tense match against Mexico, who shocked Pool C favourites USA in their previous game.

This was stated in a message at the presentation of the Sovereign with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) President’s Outstanding Achievement Award 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda.

“This joint bid, which is unprecedented in football history, will bring together Africa and Europe, the northern and southern Mediterranean, and the African, Arab and Euro-Mediterranean worlds,” said the Sovereign in this message read by the Minister of National Education, National Formation and Sport, Chakib Benmoussa.

King Mohammed VI further specified that this candidacy “will also bring out the best in all of us – in effect, a combination of genius, creativity, experience, and means.”

In Kigali, CAF President’s Outstanding Achievement Award 2022 was also awarded to King Mohammed VI.

This is “first and foremost, a tribute to the genius of Africa and its vibrant youth,” the Sovereign said on Tuesday.

The King stated that “it is still my firmly held belief, as I pointed out in my speech at the 29th African Union Summit in 2017, that “the future of Africa hinges on its youth”.

Only “a proactive, youth-oriented policy can channel energy for the achievement of development, therefore, the Award you are bestowing upon me today is, first and foremost, a tribute to the genius of Africa and its vibrant youth.”

The King has, in this sense, affirmed to have made soccer a lever for success and sustainable human development in the Kingdom.

  • Pep says his biggest regret is not having met actress Julia Roberts

Pep says his biggest regret is not having met actress Julia Roberts

Although Pep Guardiola feels he will always be a “failure” in the Champions League, his biggest regret is related to Julia Roberts, a famous Hollywood actress.

After defeating RB Leipzig 8-1 on the road, including five goals from Erling Haaland in the 7-0 second-leg victory, Guardiola’s Manchester City advanced to the quarterfinals of Europe’s premier club competition for the sixth consecutive year.

Despite not having won the Champions League yet (losing in the final in 2021), Tuesday’s performance reaffirmed City as a contender.

Guardiola explained how missing out on a visit from Pretty Woman star Julia Roberts puts this disappointment in perspective, despite failing to win the European Cup with either Bayern Munich or City. Guardiola’s last European championship came as the coach of Barcelona.

“I’m a failure in the Champions League, I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m going to explain a secret. Whatever happens this year in the Champions League, even if we win this Champions League or win three in a row, I will be a failure.

“I have three idols in my life: Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Julia Roberts. These are my three idols. For obvious reasons, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods deserve it, and Julia Roberts as well.

“Julia Roberts, years ago, came to Manchester. Not in the 1990s, when Alex Ferguson win titles, titles, titles and titles. She came in the period when we were better than United, these four or five years.

“And she went to visit Man United. She didn’t come to see us. So, even if I win the Champions League, it cannot compare to the fact Julia Roberts came to Manchester and did not come to see us. My idol.

“That’s why no matter what happens, even if I win the Champions League, it will not make up for the disappointment I had.”

AFCON: Annor Walker blames snub of local players in Black Stars squad to CHAN failure

The absence of local players in the Black Stars lineup for the upcoming matches against Angola has been attributed by Annor Walker to the Black Galaxies’ dismal performance  at the 2022 African Nations Championships (CHAN).

People are talking about the Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton’s decision to name a 25-man roster without any home-based players for the doubleheader against Angola later this month.

The Black Galaxies of Ghana competed in the CHAN tournament earlier this year in Algeria, where they lost to Niger 2-0 in the quarterfinal stage after needing just one win in the group stage to advance.

Speaking to Peace FM, Walker asserts that Hughton’s decision to omit any domestic player can be explained by the disappointing performance in Algeria.

“It could be so, if we had won the trophy, definitely he would have asked or would have contacted the technical team so we recommend one or two players to the senior national team,” he said.

“The coach did the call-ups, maybe he doesn’t know much about the locally-based players, especially with the CHAN team.”

The decision to also leave out the home-based players is a step back for the league as there were two players called up for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Ghana will host Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on March 24 before travelling away for the return leg four days later.

Blues need Gvard to replace their ageing rearguard

Chelsea are prepared to put its interest in Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar on hold in order to concentrate on signing Josko Gvardiol to the team in the summer.

The Premier League team has been linked with the Brazilian in recent months, but Sky Sports Germany reports that no talks have taken place and that a deal is currently unlikely.

Instead, Graham Potter has focused on Gvardiol, who was a member of the RB Leipzig team that conceded seven goals to Manchester City this past week in the Champions League.

The 21-year-old made an impression for Croatia during the World Cup in Qatar, and Thomas Tuchel reportedly tried to sign him to Stamford Bridge last summer but the German club reportedly blocked the move.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the West Londoners are well in the hunt when it comes to signing the defensive powerhouse but will face a battle with other top clubs including Manchester City and Liverpool.

Croatia’s 19-cap international is contracted to Leipzig until 2027, meaning there is a possibility of a bidding war that could exceed the £80million offer reportedly tabled by Chelsea last summer.

With Thiago Silva and Kalidou Koulibaly both over 30, Potter is keen to invest in a long-term solution for his backline.

Mabo Ismaila: President Buhari condoles with family of Nigerian coach

President Muhammadu Buhari sent his condolences to the late Nigerian coach Ismaila Mabo’s family, friends, and colleagues after learning of his passing on Monday, March 13, in the morning.

On Monday morning, the news of the death of the former Super Falcons coach who led the team to the World Cup is announced to the nation’s football community.

Mabo reportedly fought a serious illness for weeks before passing away at the age of 80 and leaving behind children and grandchildren.

But later that evening in Jos, Plateau State, a large group of football officials gathered to bury the deceased grassroots football strategist.

According to the report on Punch, Buhari prayed that the soul of the departed one finds favour infront of his Creator. Statement from the Presidency “Mabo was also a legendary footballer in the domestic league, making his mark as a player and captain of Mighty Jets of Jos and also representing the country as a formidable central defender with the Green Eagles.

“As the head coach of the Nigeria women’s national team at the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup, 2000 Summer Olympics and 2004 Summer Olympics, the President believes that Mabo’s legacy will live on in the players and the coaches that came in contact with him during his career, as well as the young athletes that will draw inspiration from his managerial abilities in the years to come.

“The President prays that the memory of the departed will be a blessing to those who mourn.”

Vincent Enyeama named greatest goalie Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Nigerian legend Vincent Enyeama was named as the greatest African goalkeeper of all-time by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).

There is no doubt about the fact that Enyeama was an excellent goalkeeper during his active playing days considering his achievement in the national team, Super Eagles.

Enyeama was in goal for Nigeria in their campaign at the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa which they won.

Arsenal’s Thomas Partey expected to break the league’s appearance record

Thomas Partey, a member of Ghana’s national team, is on pace to surpass his previous season high for appearances in the English Premier League.

The highly regarded midfielder transferred from Spanish La Liga team Atletico Madrid to the Gunners during the summer transfer window of 2020.

Thomas Partey made 24 Premier League appearances in his first season, making two assists but not scoring.

The aggressive midfielder went on to match his first season’s total of 24 league appearances in his second season.

Thomas Partey made an impression for the Gunners over the course of the two seasons, but injuries plagued him and forced him to miss several games.

This season, although he has suffered injuries, he has been able to stay consistent and is now on the verge of surpassing his appearances from the last two seasons.

With 27 matches played this season and more than 10 matches before the season ends, fully fit Thomas Partey looks set to set a new personal record as an Arsenal player in terms of the number of appearances in the English Premier League per season.

Mexico thumps Great Britain in World Baseball Classic final by 2-1

The World Baseball Classic game between Great Britain and Mexico ended in a close 2-1 loss for Great Britain.

Despite the fact that the United States is a member of the Organization of American States, it is not a member of the Organization of American States.

With one victory and three losses from four games, they are at the bottom of Pool C.

However, if the USA defeats Colombia on Thursday, Great Britain will move up to fourth and qualify automatically for the 2026 World Baseball Classic (02:00 GMT).

Great Britain, making their tournament debut in the fifth iteration, stood out in a tense match against Mexico, who shocked Pool C favourites USA in their previous game.

After conceding a run in the bottom of the second inning, Britain levelled the score in the top of the sixth when a single from BJ Murray Jr allowed Chavez Young to scamper home from third base.

But Mexico, who will reach the quarter-finals with victory over Canada in their final group game, regained the lead in the next inning and held on to claim a second win from their three matches.

  • Scoring goals is my super strength – Haaland

Scoring goals is my super strength – Haaland

Erling Haaland, a forward for Manchester City, has now scored more goals than any other player in a single season.

The Norwegian forward led his team (City) to an 8-1 aggregate victory over RB Leipzig on Tuesday by playing admirably and scoring five breathtaking goals, including a hat-trick in the first half. As a result, City advanced to the quarterfinals of the Champions League (UCL).

The 22-year-old is now the player with the fastest and youngest 30 goal streak in 25 UCL games.

He is also the youngest player to score five times in a single Champions League match, joining Argentina star Lionel Messi and Brazil forward Luiz Adriano as the only players to do so.

After the game, the City footballing icon admitted to being worn out after every celebration but was realistic about goal scoring which inspires him to play impressively.

“My super strength is scoring goals,” Haaland told BT Sport.

“A lot of it is being quick in the mind and trying to put it where the goalkeeper is not. I was so tired after my celebrations.”

The Norwegian forward said he could have scored more goals, however, he missed a lot of chances.

“I could have scored more goals, I missed a lot of chances but the most important thing is to come to chances because when you come to chances, that’s what you want as a striker”, he told CBS Sports.

On Twitter, football fans across the globe have commended the 22-year-old old for his stunning performance and record.

Most comments say that the Club’s manager [Pep Guardiola] denied Haaland of becoming the first player to secure the most goals in a single match of the UCL competition.

  • Was Guardiola trying to prevent Haaland from chasing Messi’s record?

Was Guardiola trying to prevent Haaland from chasing Messi’s record?

Erling Haaland and Pep Guardiola engaged in a sombre “argument” following his removal from the lineup during their decisive victory over RB Leipzig on March 14.

Haaland scored five of the seven goals Manchester City scored against their German opponents to advance to the Champions League quarterfinals.

After an hour had passed, Haaland was taken off the field to a standing ovation from the fans at Etihad Stadium and his manager, who congratulated him. He joined Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano as the only players in Champions League history to score five goals in a single match.

But as the Norwegian later revealed, he questioned Guardiola as to why he had denied him the opportunity to complete a double hat-trick. Haaland was of the idea that had he been accorded a few

However, Guardiola downplayed the incident, revealing his satisfaction with his striker who has now broken the record for most goals for Man City in a single season. “If he achieved this milestone at 22, 23 years old, it will be boring, his life. Now he has a target.

That’s why I make the substitution,” Guardiola said as quoted by the Independent. The Spanish manager also admitted he had no idea about Messi’s record when he took the Norwegian off.

Sports Brief also reported on football fans on social media being unable to understand Guardiola’s decision to sub Haaland in Man City’s 7-0 thrashing of Leipzig on Tuesday.

The Norwegian scored five goals with only 30 touches with his hat-trick being completed before half-time, but the 22-year-old was keen on more goals when he was hooked off.

Haaland missed out on the chance to achieve another special milestone after his manager, Guardiola substituted him in the 64th minute in an act of mercy towards the Germans.

Adam Kwarasey likely to become next Black Stars goalkeeper’s trainer

Adam Larsen Kwarasey, a former goalkeeper for the Black Stars, may take on the role of senior national team goalkeeper’s trainer, according to reports,

The 35-year-old, who announced his retirement from professional football in 2020 after finishing a three-year stint with Vlerenga, is slated to succeed Richard Kingson as the next goalkeeper’s trainer.

The new Black Stars coach, Chris Hughton, is rumoured to have made a few changes to the technical staff, which could result in the hiring of a new goalkeepers’ trainer and video analyst, as reported by GhanaWeb on Monday, March 13, 2023.

An unnamed source claims that the new manager is open to hiring both a new video analyst and a goalkeeper’s trainer.

This could see Richard Kingson, the current goalkeepers’ trainer, and Awal Kamin, the video analyst, lose their jobs.

The Norwegian-based goalkeeper was Ghana’s first choice at the 2012 AFCON, as the Black Stars finished 4th in the tournament.

The goalkeepers were later chosen to be Ghana’s safest pair for the 2014 World Cup.

Kwarasey won two trophies each with Stromsgodset, Portland Timbers, and Rosenborg. He was awarded the Best Goalkeeper at Tippeligaen in 2013 and also earned the MLS Save of the Year in 2015.

Adam Larsen Kwarasey is currently the co-founder and sporting director of FC Oslo, a team based in Norway.

Ghana will face Angola in a doubleheader later this month in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

  • Would be painful for Harry Kane end career without a trophy – Teddy Sheringham

Would be painful for Harry Kane end career without a trophy – Teddy Sheringham

Harry Kane, in Teddy Sheringham’s words, will be “a very disappointed man” if he ends his career without a trophy.

Although the 203 goals he has scored for Tottenham and England place him third all-time in Premier League goals scored, the 29-year old’s -mantlepiece is still empty.

After Spurs were eliminated from the FA Cup and the Champions League within a matter of days earlier this month, Kane’s wait to win a trophy will likely extend into the following season at the earliest.

Kane has been open about his desire to compete for football’s top honours, and Sheringham implied there may be a hint of regret if he does not win the trophy.

The 56-year-old exclusively remarked to LiveScore at the London Football Awards that “winning stuff” is the core of football.

“If he goes throughout his career without winning stuff he’ll be a very disappointed man.

“It’s all well and good getting these accolades for personal reasons but he’s in a team game and he needs to win things as a team.”

As has often been the case in recent years, Kane’s future in North London is poised to be under the spotlight as he enters the final year of his contract this summer.

Manchester United, a place above Spurs in third, have been strongly linked with Tottenham’s No10 after recently ending their own six-year trophy drought with victory in the Carabao Cup.

Sheringham, who won three Premier League titles after leaving White Hart Lane for Old Trafford in 1997, admits he is unsure where Kane sees his immediate future.

He added: “I really don’t know. I’ve probably had this conversation for the last three or four years about what Harry should do.

“He’s at a club he loves but he wants to win things as well, so you’ll have to ask Harry.

“I keep getting in trouble every time I say what he should do!”

With Alan Shearer’s Premier League record in sight, Kane also became Tottenham’s all-time top goalscorer last month with his 267th goal in all competitions for his boyhood club against Manchester City.

He has since taken his tally to 270 with three more strikes — including two in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest.

Fellow club legend Gary Mabbutt was keen to stress how fondly the striker holds Spurs in his heart.

The former defender said: “Harry came out at the end of the game the other day. We beat Forest, we had a fantastic result.

“Harry was questioned after that. He loves being at Spurs. I’ve known him since he was a young lad, his family are all based around here, he loves London.

“So that’ll be down to Harry’s choice in the end. I see no reason he should leave a club like Spurs.”
